Arriving in Lisbon by Car 2022-10-02 Cudos and much gratitude to my daughter, Christina Porter (@christinalynnporter ) and son-in-law, Galen Miley (@galeforcethunderbundt ) for doing the driving and navigating in Portugal like they were born there. They did an excellent job! Driving (and especially parking) in Lisbon is not for the inexperienced driver or faint of heart. But we made it! And we were very lucky to have been able to rent a lovely remodeled AirBnB apartment in an historic building in a superb location close to the waterfront in Lisbon, that actually had a parking garage. It was touch and go getting our boat of a rental car up the narrowest ramps with the steepest open inside edges that I have ever seen, but Chrissy and Galen managed to get the boat up three levels to its final anchoring position, in one pass, without even appearing fazed. Can’t honestly say the same thing for myself. Thankfully, you really do not need a car in Lisbon, as long as you have strong legs and good lungs, so, we were able to leave the boat parked until it was time to drive to the airport. We were looking forward to Lisbon with its historical landmarks, beautiful churches, seven very steep hills, narrow cobblestone streets, great food, reasonably priced shopping, and lively waterfront. And it did not disappoint. Shown at right: The Sanctuary of Christ the King — Santuário de Cristo Rei is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon situated in Almada, in Portugal. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument. I think @theportuguesekids need to do a skit about those who are portuguese, speak portuguese, and people don't believe we are portuguese. Whether it be from the portuguese side, or the American side both cultures have the craziest stuff to say when they don't believe you are portuguese, your first language is portuguese, your parents are immigrants, and still in shock after you do break out speaking in portuguese.  #portugueseproblems

Portuguese Azulejos 10 photos of some of the beautiful Portuguese tile that we saw decorating the outside and inside of buildings in Lisbon, as well as some of the tile exhibits on display at The Tile Museum in Lisbon. One of the most distinctive features of Lisbon is that you see so many beautiful and colorful tiles lining the outside of churches, houses, metro stations and cafés in the city. Portugal is the World Tile Capital for a special reason: tiles have been used on the facades and buildings for over 500 years, without interruption. It has survived the test of time, and it is an important means of artistic expression. These decorative tiles are called azulejos, and have existed since the 15th century! The ceramic tiles were brought to Portugal by Moorish invaders from North Africa. The Azulejos became a form of art in and of themselves, and are still widely used today.
