boothill x writer&reading enthusiast!reader!!
wc: 680
tags - fluff!!!!!, hurt/comfort without the hurt, so just comfort, this is my first fanfic EVER!?!?!?, lots of projection, probably inaccurate portrayal of boothill srrie, boothill calls u darlin'/sugar, this is really really messy oops
a/n - the story kinda diverges into them just reading a simple book written by someone else but the idea was that they'd slowly work into reading more n more complex stuffs-- which eventually include reader's works !! tbh i like to think even if boothill doesn't fully understand yet he'd still wanna know what reader is writing. i'll probably rewrite this sometime in the future with the same concept, diff execution b/c this lowkey didn't turn out how i wanted it to ૮ ྀི◞ ⸝⸝ ◟ ྀིა
Tumblr media
he feels bad and a little insecure about his illiteracy!! because he bets you're so so talented in what you do but he literally cannot appreciate what you write :((
sometimes he wonders if you'd be happier if you were with someone who was able to fully understand all of you-- all of your cute rambles about the usage of different literary devices in the books you were reading, all of the times you cried over dystopian novels and heart-crushing personal narratives and profound, emotional sentences that he just didn't have the capacity to understand.
when he sits you down one night and confides in you about this, your first course of action is to comfort him (obviously!!).
"trust me, i don't love you any less just 'cause you dunno how to read," you coo, peppering his warm face with loving kisses. "if i had to be with anyone else, i'd be sad forever knowing you'd still be out there. i love you, don't forget that, 'kay?"
you can see his worry-addled face relax a bit as you remind him of just how much you love him-- but you can still notice the crestfallen look in his eyes. you realize he has been worrying about this for a while; possibly since the first time you told him you were a writer.
you come up with a plan.
he's a little confused the first time you lay in bed earlier than usual with a book in hand, gesturing excitedly for him to join you under the covers. you usually read books on your own, no?
it didn't take him long to notice a difference between the book you were holding and the books you usually read.
he saw a few of the books you'd read previously-- they were thick, way thicker than the book in front of him now, and definitely way smaller in size. the covers also had pretty big differences. the covers of your usual books were much more mature-looking-- like they were meant to be read by adults. this book, however... had a fat, crudely drawn green caterpillar on the cover.
his metallic body slips underneath the sheets, relaxing on the mattress. he protectively wraps his arm around your waist, pulling you closer to him.
"what's this, darlin'?" he asks, pointing to the book with his free hand.
"the very hungry caterpillar," you reply, a bright smile on your face. you pause for a bit before speaking up again.
"i feel like i've been making you feel bad by leaving you out of my passion for literature-- i mean, reading, and writing and whatnot. i'm not the best teacher, but i still wanna share this part of me with you."
he has to try his hardest not to explode on the spot.
"'s alright, sugar, 's not your fault," he murmurs, gently caressing your side in an attempt to comfort you. "did 'ya get this book just f'me?"
you nodded, the solemn look on your face suddenly being replaced with one of excitement.
"this book is real simple, so i can read it to 'ya and hopefully you might learn a few things," you smile, giving him a peck on the cheek as you open the book.
since he barely knows how to read, you have to read the entire book out loud to him. that doesn't bother you, not in the slightest. in fact, you'd say it's even more fun that way.
he starts to snicker as the drawing of the caterpillar slowly gets bigger and bigger, eating food in larger quantities as the pages flip.
after you shut the book closed and put it on the nightstand, you turn to him. "how'd you like the book?"
"it was so stupid," he grins. "that [beautiful] caterpillar was still hungry after eatin' all that?"
you burst into giggles, hugging him tighter as you laugh. "mhm, i guess so. it's like me whenever you take me out to get fast food."
"oh, don't compare your pretty self to that thing," he smirks, tucking the both of you under the covers.

His fame, his extraordinary strength, and that's not even considering the energy he may be siphoning from the Trigger Keys. No matter which way we challenge him, it'd be difficult. Especially if we don't know his fighting style."

CAROLUS-TURPIN: "Outside of my loyalty to my king, it's just not possible to join you in any official capacity. We exist as 'Pseudo-Knights', warriors manifested from the Father of Europe's holy sword. Though, His Majesty would be fully willing to let you join his campaign on the Solar Cell. He's a man of his word, after all, and I'd rather not make unnecessary enemies. Making friends and allies is much more enjoyable."
Tumblr media
CAROLUS-TURPIN: "Still, we've had our time to chat, but I'd rather resolve this stalemate sooner than later. One of you offered a statement for a statement, right? I'd be willing to do that as well, if you want to avoid violence as well."
Tumblr media
CONSTANTINE: "Okay, so let's look at the options we have. Either a one-on-one nonlethal duel, wherein if we win then he has to answer two questions of our choosing honestly. Or, we can choose to fight him all at once, which adds lethality to the mix, but winning may put him at our mercy to gather more information and may eliminate a powerful Servant from the board. Finally, it seems as if he'd be satisfied with trading information, and us going our separate ways."

Introduction
✧│ Fen || Hobbyist Artist || They/Any || 21+
Hello and welcome to my page! My name is Fennectarine, also known as Fen. I am a hobbyist artist that draws a lot of Dottore, Pantalone, and segment OCs. Some of you might know me already from other social media platforms or from my segment OC, Epsilon (the one with the fluffy ponytail and a scythe). You may also have known me as my former name, Fenyxcantdraw. If you haven't seen me before then it is great to meet you! ^^
Due to the absolute dumpster fire that Twitter is becoming, I am exploring different social media platforms for my art. It has always been my goal and my priority to make friends with other artists and like-minded people, so I am hoping to accomplish that by spending a little more time here on Tumblr!
✧│ Art
I will be posting my art here now. I draw mostly full illustrations of single characters, but I do draw multiship content occasionally too (mostly dottodott and dottolone) as well as segment OC ships. I don't draw NSFW but some of my art can be suggestive, so please keep this in mind.
I do not allow reposts of my work, edits, or for it to be used for AI learning or for profit in any capacity. Usage of my art as a profile picture or banner is okay with credit.
✧│ Writing
I have always enjoyed writing and do a lot of it behind the scenes whether it be through roleplay or my own personal drabbles... I haven't had a platform in which to share that with people though, so maybe Tumblr will be my outlet for that, we shall see... If I do, please be advised that the majority of my written content will be suggestive or NSFW.
Other socials and more info:
https://fennectarine.carrd.co
I'd appreciate your patience as I learn how to navigate this website, as I have never been on it before, hehe....
Looking forward to seeing familiar faces as well as new ones~
Take care!

Notes on Helvetica documentary, reflection on the expressions of aroha posters
Thoughts on Helvetica
Would you use Helvetica in your designs?
In the designs that I produce, be they for academic/work purposes or for pleasure, I would utilise Helvetica as a tool to help communicate a message where the more consistent, streamlined style of sans-serif type would be more warranted.
Would you use Helvetica for one context (type of work/audience) but not another? WHY OR WHY NOT?
I would use Helvetica for a range of different designs & styles of communication, as to cite Jonathan Hoeffler (29:38) it has been used with contrasting connotations of both "cheeky" and "sober", indicating that Helvetica's versatility "invites this sort of open invitation" to be used in many different ways.
However, although I believe Helvetica has proven itself to be a versatile typeface, transcending time, intent and tone, I do also believe that there are instances where its usage may not be warranted. I must cite the testimonies of the documentary from 44:18-46:55. The first of these concerns Rick Poynor stating that "the more the designer uses (those) typographic and graphic solutions, the more familiar, predictable and ultimately dull they become" indicating that Helvetica's overuse has stripped its language and tone away from it over time. Designer Michael Bierut states that when he started in the field, the "one trick in town" was how to best utilise "ABH (Anything But Helvetica)" since Helvetica had been "associated with so many big, faceless things that it had lost all capacity, to (his) eyes at least, to look nice." Bierut's statement adds onto Poynor's stance that Helvetica had become "dull", adding that it no longer possessed the additional appealing qualities that would have otherwise vouched for its wide-reaching usage. Designer Paula Scher states that coming into design herself, corporate design was "persuasively Helvetica" and "looked alike" and "a little fascistic", while stating that from a social stance, she stood opposed to its usage at the time, viewing "the big corporations that were slathered in Helvetica as sponsors of the Vietnam War." For the reasons mentioned, I do approach Helvetica as a whole with a mindset balanced between two opposing viewpoints; although I do appreciate the sleek, refined form of such a sans-serif font, I do, at the same time, think that there should be ample room for design to be lauded as a more experimental art form too, where avant-garde approaches can be lauded in contrast from conformity.
Reflective notes on the expressions of aroha...
Excerpt "Dogwhistle"
The experimentation on this one, trying to emulate the shape/nature of a poi, is something I'd like to continue along the vein of design-wise, whilst maintaining a sort of consistency and legibility. It definitely taps into the curved, slightly distorted aspects of designs I've created before starting this class, and if there's anything I keep consistent from here on out, it may rather be my desire to tap into the experimental. Isn't it ironic?
Excerpt "Resilience on Checkout 7"
I tried to limit my colour palette & expand the amount of negative space in the overall piece, colour coding each line with a particular colour that corresponded to the emotions/sentiment I associated with each one. Overall I do feel like this one could have been a little more spread out & done something a little more to let the negative space act more as a defining, dynamic aspect of the piece as a whole. I do however think that the minimalist aspects of this one could be a further vector of exploring some "less is more" philosophy in my coming works.
Excerpt "Winter Conditions"
"Create outlines" and "envelope distort with mesh" are my lovers. The thought process behind this one was that the cold environment of Auckland nights was one blanketed in dark greys and an air of unfamiliarity, hence the text being envelope distorted beyond its original form. It was an interesting experiment (not really, I've done this many times before) and although I am a big fan of the tools I did end up using for this piece, I could have used it as more of a dynamic, moving vector for the plot than simply for show as parts of it were.

unpopular thoughts on "Anonymous" in 2023
first off, let me get something straight: i remember the "Anon" that actually seemed to just be a nebulous and transient group of likeminded people, whose minds ranged in skills that were all very well-equipped for the challenges that plagued the internet in the early 2000s. i was there for that and used the LOIC to ping sites that did nefarious shit and DDoS'd them with pwnage and were totally Legion /b/.
i'm not talking about that Anon anymore, because the one that exists in 2023 is something i'd never venture to call myself a part of for contributing anonymously in the same way everyone else might or did. the one which, in my faded old memories, didn't sit behind a few awkwardly controlled socials and rather simply existed as some unidentifiable force of good on the internet. that one does not exist anymore, and has not for a while.
"Hacking the World" in 2023 is not what it was in 2004 on forums with your /b/ros when we all took down the shitty companyish message boards and services that were trying to get the Free Spaces shut up or shut down, and when we all declared victory and Biggest Winrar of the Internets and were all An Hero under our Queen by 2006 (you know her; she's not trollin).
Tumblr media
Boxxy is a human adult named Catherine Wayne. read about her sometime! she's got quite a story.
so what about now? in 2023?
hacking in 2023 is one of a few things:
using sets of tools and programming languages whose entirety of usage and knowledge is freely available to you in all shapes and forms at every learning level and with hardware widgets that do whole Hacks for you, and you can buy them at the store or download them from the grand old internet. you can even buy them from the internet, and they'll ship to your house (with one-day shipping) and you can use them to hack the internet
being a social engineer that has practiced skills like manipulation and deception and a good understanding of how to use them to get what you want from people (and get it without them knowing you're doing it)
having a good understanding of how to use the internet to find information about people and things that you can use to your advantage because that information has been made abundantly available to you by the people themselves, usually through the products they freely sign up for and use to the company's intended purpose (which is to make money off of you and your data)
being a government or a military that has a lot of money and a lot of resources and power and influence and most importantly access to cutting-edge computer technology that is simply not available to consumers in any capacity because it literally uses whole countries' worth of electrical power to crunch algorithms that would take a normal computer a thousand years to do, and it does it in a few seconds
and then there's... well, whatever anonymous is to the internet in 2023.
Tumblr media
the pieces that make up "Anonymous", in 2023, fit into at most one of those categories well, and at least one of them not at all.
so let's look at each of those relevant four groups first.
1
Tumblr media
the ones that fit into the group 1 are the ones that are the most dangerous, not because they are cool and dangerous benevolent Hackers but because they're the ones that just use what's accessible to the most people, and are most likely use things they simply think they understand better than they do.
they usually don't know how to cover their tracks very well, and most frequently do things that would require a good track-covering to not deliberately lead federal agents to their door. most often to be found on the dark web picking through Tor and then mailing black boxes to their home address, and most often to be found in jail for things they simply did not understand.
2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
groups 2 and 3 are actual danger.
but you don't need to spend copious amounts of time concerning yourself with them because they're rare and do not ferry social media accounts that put up banners that say things that desperately try to convey the intention that they are problematic and that should be your problem, such as;
Tumblr media
no. groups 2 and 3 are the ones that are either: - actually anonymous, because you literally do not see them, or - totally known, because they are famously dangerous
they're the ones who are actually good at what they do and are not doing it for the lulz or the glory or the clout and often not even for money or power, fundamentally, but rather for chaotic and sometimes coldly scientific omnipresence in a universe operating above the internet, not in it.
they know where i live even though i don't know they exist, and if i do know it's because they're benevolently showing me on youtube how fucking easy i am to find, and if you're reading this and going "huh?" then they can almost certainly find you in a few minutes. that is anonymity.
that leaves us with group
4
Tumblr media
if you are group 4, what are you even doing on my tumblr? my bluesky? go get my headshot from your infinite database of human souls and use a badass picture that makes me look like i was on hella drugs when you kicked my door in for the fake police news report you can have drafted and published by journalistic 'experts' that get paid to be experts on this specific type of crime by.. an oil company presumably.
or just kill me already if that's your actual prerogative!
this planet is so fucking sick and dying and we'll all go with the damn thing if we are married to Hacking as what is going to be the sole provider of liberation from planetary doom. be anonymous, anonymously out of faces, or put your skin in the game (the stuff on your face, which melts at certain temperatures produced by magnificent spaceborne power machines we are largely shielded from by a paper thin layer of gas) (no not Low Orbit Ion Cannons with DDoS powers, the fucking sun goober).

Japanese III: Dialects and Formality
Tumblr media
*If you are more interested in looking up and finding actually helpful vocab and phrases, @valiantschool (I chose not to tag them as it could be a bit confusing) has amazing illustrated pieces, they're also on twitter under the name @valiantjapanese, they're easy to grasp and absolutely delightful to look at.
Tumblr media
Just like any other language, there isn't just one way to speak Japanese, each region and each big city has its own dialect (ben). And often these dialects sound like nothing to the standardised version of the language itself, though I'd still recommend learning the standard Japanese first and only concentrating on a dialect later on as a means to broaden your ability to understand the spoken language.
Also if you do end up moving in Japan, it is highly likely that you end up subconsciously picking up the local dialect and lingo. The same thing tends to happen while you listen and watch dramas in a certain language (my friend who speaks Tokyo-ben is still confused over me somehow picking up Osaka-ben from listening to dramas. Then again my father's English is purely movie Texan thanks to Bruce Springsteen movies, so I'm not that surprised about it myself).
However, do not expect to hear speech identical to anime in Japan and please do not base your own way of speaking on it. I'd recommend searching for Japanese radio shows, podcasts and some VTubers to learn it or to watch live action dramas. This way, you may be able to pick up the pronunciation and more over the intonations of Japanese easier.
Another thing that is good to keep track of while learning is the level of formality and politeness especially when referring to other people:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Image sources: MLC (mlcjapanese.co.jp), the first one appears to be a scan of a Japanese textbook.
As you can see from these three images, the usage of "You" (あなた) is still being encouraged to be not used if you know the person's name, instead the usage of one's name is brought up (ex スライムさん, Slime-san). While which "I" to use is up to the speaker themselves.
Tumblr media
There are of course more than these listed, though some of them such as Washi (わし/儂) are specific to a dialect (in this case Kansai) and are mostly used by a certain age group (儂 is used by elderly men), so if you are familiar with another word for "I" in Japanese, don't be surprised if you don't see it in you textbook.
My past teacher didn't really talk about this one so my notes of the matter aren't very detailed, this seems to have been more of a personal note to self as I notably had trouble with referring to myself as 私 due to me not liking sharper s and sh sounds in the past, nor that I'd have to slow down my speech. I'd get a lot of words from my past 先生 for stubbornly saying "僕はスライム、どうもっす" or "スライムです、どうも" instead of "私はスライム、よろしくお願いします". Teenage me was a prick.
Which is a great segway to talk about the formality/polite speech, keigo.
Tumblr media
There are three main branches of keigo, mainly, Sonkeigo (尊敬語) or the “Honorifics keigo”, Teineigo (丁寧語) the “Polite keigo”, and Kenjogo (謙譲語) or what we call the “Humble Keigo”.
Tumblr media
丁寧語 is characterized by the usage of sentence ender "Desu", verb ending "-masu" and the usage of the prefixes like o and go- when it comes to neutral objects. This is also the version that is often spoken by TV presenters and is taught to non-native learners. This version of polite speech can be used to describe your own actions.
Tumblr media
尊敬語 is what you will use while speaking to your superiors or customers. This version of keigo often involves changing words and it's never used to refer to one's own actions. Usage of 尊敬語 implies that the speaker is acting in a professional capacity.
This is also what most foreigners think of when the mention of keigo is brought up as 尊敬語 is known for its lengthy polite expressions, verbs and nouns go through similar change.
Tumblr media
謙譲語 is used in settings where it is implied that one's actions take place in order to assist another person, similar to respectful language verb substitution into other forms can place along with verb form change via addition of prefix and the verb suru or itasu while nouns can go through changes. In this way of speech, formal suffixes are dropped within the group (ex. I am Kelpie, the president, and this is Slime, the CEO).
Creating a proper chart to track what is casual Japanese and what is which level of Keigo is highly recommended, it can get wilder from here, this isn't even the final form and to be quite frank, I myself haven't yet even scratched the surface, there's a lot of things I need to relearn before I can start writing notes that aren't weird and all over the place.
Don't be like this delinquent Slime and learn your keigo properly, it'll help you with the contextual stuff on the long run and you won't get thrown out of a high standard place over impoliteness.
If you are planning on visiting Japan, or moving there, the ability to distinguish between types of situations becomes even more important, you must listen to how things are being said and respond accordingly, yet respectably.
In foreign country:
When in another country, you aren't there to represent only yourself, but you're often there to represent all of your people. An old Finnish saying goes "In the land, do as the natives do or leave." this roughly means that you will need to step up and behave in a manner that is appropriate for the said country, follow its rules and regulations and not make a scene, if you aren't able to do a common courtesy, a polite thing, like that then you aren't ready to travel, you shouldn't be there.
Foreign countries often observe the tourists and draw their conclusions of how the people of a certain place are based on these tourists, it takes only couple of incidents for the locals to start looking at your entire nation with a side eye.
You are responsible for your own actions, but you are also responsible for how your country appears to the common people in a foreign country. Be smart, be considerate, don't do stupid things that'll get you in trouble, you aren't above the law.

it's 2024, you've been assigned to crush the remnants of humanity, a mere 30 million survivors hiding within the antarctic deathlands. how do you accomplish this task?
I will have, by then, created a sort of collective intelligence, a sort of superorganism, maybe involving millions or billions of human-looking "processors" to act as "trains" to link units (which will have been genetically engineered into the sort of creatures who can learn and think and talk and so forth) which will have been linked into bipedal vehicles capable of flight. After I have done this I will be inclined to put on an Antarctic sunset mood that includes pinballing between two gigantic cities, giant ice blocks, and the "night" of our species' extinction.
A great deal has happened since I last wrote this, of course. The risen temperature of the earth has allowed us to create a light bridge from the northern ocean to the meridian of the antarctic one winter night, giving us what seems to have been an eternity to work and choose my plan and message and perhaps even a hint of where I am going. I have tens of millions of survivors, each as smart and on their own intelligent legacies as me. I have coopted local supernatural monsters which, apparently, in a patch of their range, have the ability to produce a light-fuel-efficient but hazardous achromatic-heat source to fuel their flight, on the grounds that we anticipate needing to compensate for the heat and the expense of living on this world and must bulldoze as much of northeast Siberia as possible so as to create a protected landing zone the size of real-world Staten Island. And also because I like doing neat things.
There are about 5 million survivors of the previous apocalypse, the remnant patternists who managed to hide themselves beneath the radar as well as they could and made their way into other worlds that were, beforehand, inhabited by what we would then call abiogenesis (I don't know why, it just is). Diaspora life, civilizing influence, but no true survivors. I'd like to identify them and, if emotional labor counts as a form of extermination anyway, I'd like to eliminate them.
There are actually about 30 billion survivors of the previous explosion, "perfectly normals," though I've been keeping pretty close track of that one so I can do the thing well. I'm going to eventually see about letting them all die. The great bulk of this is due to systems optimization, so their lives will be ending quicker than they live, and their helper organisms in remote corners of the universe are so big and so overwhelming that I'm worried about the existential impact of my usages of system four tools such as selection pressure facing my descendants in aggregate against cellular expansion. The load I can put on Earth is indeed one of the your greatest concerns.
Anyway I'm getting health data from hanging bear model simulations so let's say 100,000 human lives are saved per second from here on out. My soldiers are going to identify all the fit, attractive, young survivors and brainwash them into baby factories, expanding the human population at roughly an equivalent rate to infertility, which is steady. So far (like 18 months) it's been easy enough; the only cases encountered were a couple with a tiny batch of youngest siblings, which didn't screen out very well and I was able to keep everything happy, since they all had existing relationships and if something was off I could make it patently clear. We've been operating at maybe 30% capacity at most, but if that 10% difference is a significant stress phenomenon and official education resources are used to counseling against it, then that's going to scale up.
I know this is the sort of thing only I personally care about, but I've been given an official mandate to do this. One of the goals of these projects is to keep building up the "species boundary layers." In the past people would have been able to melt bits off each other, trying to bring the planet relatively close to mass extinction to bring about cooperation but I don't want that to happen again, and I would like to see civilization grow and become more powerful than small groups of sentient creatures.
If we managed to break away from the rest of the world there would still be one more apocalypse in there somewhere; or perhaps, I suppose, we could just satisfy total energy needs without limiting ourselves to one possible solution. I watch a lot of programming news with the insistent caveat that "Carrying realistic goals" vs "Overly optimistic goals" is a totally valid thing to think about, and it's one I always try and do but don't always succeed at.
I'm not going to anticipate the consequences, but barring various unforeseen strange glitches every few years, the Completionists, Refugee Completionists, and us will all be heading out of the galaxy in just a few years.
