Sunday, August 6, 2023: Days after conducting a telephone call in which we determined the titles for the songs on Take the Train to Manchester, Corduroy Institute convened at the Bancroft Laboratory of Auditory Sciences with three objectives in mind.

The first goal was to revise a series of tracks by making their final set of edits. We adjusted the timeline placement of the vocals on Corduroy 62 before altering the vocal-to-reverb ratio on Corduroy 72. We also considered removing the Bass VI from a portion of Corduroy 73 but opted to leave it in.

The second goal was to begin mastering the songs. Many of our releases from 2019 onwards were mastered using iZotope's Ozone 8 Elements plugin. However, that computer is now temporarily out of comission. Thus, before even attempting the mastering, we had to migrate files and transfer licenses. This process was neither pleasant nor stimulating. Thus, we opted to leave the mastering for another day.

The third goal was to create the album art. We had a concept for Take the Train to Manchester in mind, and we also had several auxiliary ideas. Research was conducted on various fronts. Ultimately, however, no satisfactory progress was made.

Thus, in one day, we accomplished only one of the three tasks we had set for ourselves. Let it be known that the last steps of consolidating an album's release are among its most challenging moments.

More exact and defined maybe, but in my opinion it really looses some "life".The tube amplifier bass compression also enhances my listening experience. I'll still have a wonderfull sound stage thanks to these two gems, but it's so. If I turn off the room simulation, the sound becomes boringly flat. Reverb or what ever you audiophiles call it. The room simulation really adds some life to the sound even at low SPL.

Oh, I love talking tech! I still consider myself an amateur in the ways of production, but I'm always working on getting better. None of this is by any means the best way (or even a good way) to do anything, it's just how I did it.

I did compose the song, yes - musically and lyrically (other than the first line of the first verse, of course). I use Studio One for my DAW. I got it a good number of years ago and I've liked it enough that I haven't moved to anything else.

I don't play drums and I don't pretend to write drums, so all of the drum tracks are just standard midi samples from EZdrummer (although I did add the tambourine and shaker).

I normally hate using ribbon mics with my voice, but I think I used a ribbon mic through a preamp with built-in channel strip. Other than stock EQ and compression, I threw vocals and bass through some simple LANDR plug-ins that I got as a pack. There's a bit more post-production on the vocals, but nothing notable. Bass was all DI.

I usually like to either live mic my guitars or run my amps through cabinet simulators, but this one was all DI + digital. I've recently been turned on by Neural DSP's plug-ins (though I normally use them for... heavier... guitar riffs), so all of the guitar tracks in this were using the Nolly model because I felt it had a relatively Cake feel.

The trumpet sounds very fake because it came from a not-particularly-great stock instrument sample pack in my DAW. It was the only trumpet I had on hand. The synth sounds both came from an Arturia Analog Lab synth package that came with my midi keyboard. Yes, I did play that freaky little synth thing after the first chorus.

I actually forgot to throw on a master reverb, but I don't think it was lacking too much without it (especially for a meme song). The real magic came from two things at the end of it all. I ran everything through an outboard Elysia mid/side stereo saturation module to widen it all and beef it up a little, and finished it all off with the iZotope Ozone mastering plug-in to really make it sparkle and get the final levels right.

Heard the original version of Sandopolis Act 2 and decided to give it a shot. I also wanted to test out a new equalizer VST. A few years ago, a company called Izotope gave away Ozone 8 for free, which is audio mastering software.

I was familiar with Ozone, because I still use the very first version of Ozone ever created as a Winamp plugin.

A couple months ago, my cousin and I were talking about EQ plugins for something (I think OBS?) and he mentioned the free copy of Ozone 8 we both signed up for. I blew it off because I get stuck in my ways and don't like to change.

Just a few weeks ago, I saw Yuzo Koshiro tweeting about how much he loved Ozone 10. If you don't know, that's the musician behind a lot of truly incredible chiptunes, including the soundtracks to all three Streets of Rage games.

With that endorsement, I used Ozone 8 to level, equalize, and master this track. Sounds pretty good, I think!
