Etrian Odyssey is so cool you get to make up 5 scrimblos, headcanon why they're all stuck together as they traverse hell, and then have them die to a deer as the sickest battle theme ever plays in the back.

ベア・ナックル II 「1992」
"The soundtrack was influenced by electronic dance music, specifically house, techno, hardcore techno, and breakbeat. The soundtrack for Streets of Rage 2 is considered 'revolutionary' and ahead of its time, for its 'blend of swaggering house synths,' 'dirty' electro-funk and 'trancey electronic textures that would feel as comfortable in a nightclub as a video game.'"

I think that Sonic 1 Master System is the best classic Sonic game not made by Sonic Team. But as you said, it is kind of its own beast. A very good game starring Sonic, rather than a proper Sonic game.
Hm.
I dunno. Sonic Chaos is pretty good. Like at least as far as the Game Gear Sonics go, it's the only one that feels wholly unique? Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Triple Trouble are all trying to be the Genesis games, with Triple Trouble getting the closest in terms of vibe.
Sonic Chaos is going for its own thing. And I will always love it as a result. Though only the Master System version; the Game Gear one doesn't have enough screen resolution.
I think it's fair to say Sonic 1 8-bit has the best soundtrack, though. Yuzo Koshiro don't miss. Everybody talks about Bridge Zone, and it's an all-timer for sure, but that whole soundtrack is great.

(Oh and I guess there's Sonic Blast, Sonic Labyrinth, and the Game Gear version of Sonic Spinball, but those games are like watching paint dry.)

Countdown till Midnight, We’re slaves to the Moonlight Take it up into highest gear Shave off a couple seconds here Rubber is burning The wheels keep on turning And I’m about to get excited here, slam the break and we’re drifting clear
Time starts unwinding The freedom is frightening Lean back and just let it roll Closer to you inner soul Feeling the fire the pit of desire Lose your fear on the next break, spin it out on a fast take
It's what I always knew It's what I felt inside That has me drifting into you I'm gonna follow through With both hands on the wheel, "I'm drifting into you"
from Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 4 Soundtrack (2011)

June 12th, 2023 - Etrian Odyssey HD
I missed this series so it was good to see it back, even if it was just through rereleases of older games. They aren't based on the 3DS remakes, but the original DS versions instead. At first, I was a little disappointed, but not anymore. The DS and 3DS ones can kinda be counted as separate games because of different map designs. So far, I've just done the first of the HD remasters. It's the same game, but with a few quality of life features and updated to only use one screen.
The touch screen was a big part of these games so we all wondered how it would work, and while it doesn't feel as nice as a DS/3DS touch screen, it works. It's definitely comfortable enough and I'm okay with them continuing the series like this. I do wish there were a few more of the quality of life improvements from Untold though: like floor jump (would be REALLY useful due to how shortcuts are placed), actually being able to see pits and shortcuts, have warnings for 1 way shortcuts, and the Untold soundtrack.
A few annoying things, but they didn't ruin my enjoyment. It's still Etrian Odyssey and I'm hoping we'll get more in this style. Looking forward to what they do with VI and wanting to get IV, V, and Nexus in the Origins Collection style. Who knows? Maybe we can get the Untold games ported someday too (even get one made for 3)? Not really much else to say. Solid Etrian Odyssey game, but it's a bit rough in some areas.
