what’s your ranking of the talk show hosts?
Oh, thank you for asking. I am so sorry for the essay I am about to write.
Highest to Lowest:
Conan O'Brien / Craig Ferguson - I put these two in the top spot because if you asked me to choose only one of them to watch for the rest of my life I wouldn't be able to do it. Both of them are people that I watched with my dad occasionally through my childhood so maybe I'm a little biased on that front. They're probably the only two hosts that I ever cared to watch interview anyone because it never felt boring to me even if I didn't really care about the interviewee or know who it was. They were both unique and just seemed like genuinely good people both inside and outside the studio (and to add to the bias a little; I got to meet Craig at one of his Fancy Rascal tour shows last year and he was so fucking great. I was so nervous going into it because I was worried he wouldn't be the same as he was on TV as is the case for a lot of celebrities, but he went above and beyond for everyone. He signed everyone's posters and merch even though he didn't have to (I got a poster signed) and he actually took the time to have a full conversation with everyone individually and make sure everyone was comfortable. He's a wonderful dude and I wish I could go back and talk to him again.)
Stephen Colbert - When I first started watching late night shows (back when the pandemic first started), the first shows I ever sat down and watched a full episode of on TV were Stephen and Conan. I had absolutely no idea who Stephen was because up until that point I hadn't really cared enough about politics. I grew up in a heavily conservative small town with a heavily conservative family in the south where the word liberal counted as an insult, so you can imagine we didn't really watch a lot of late night shows. Stephen's show helped me make sense of things, helped me work out what my own feelings were, and provided an escape from the hell that was lockdown. He was the one that made me give a shit about what's happening in this country first, and after that first sit down I ended up going back and watching old episodes of The Colbert Report and The Daily Show (he also led me to Jon in that regard, since I had no idea either of those shows existed) and found that I loved his style of comedy. I really do wish I had discovered him sooner.
Jon Stewart - The only reason I didn't stick Jon and Stephen in the number two spot together (as well as John Oliver) was because Stephen was primarily responsible for my interest in politics - basically he was for me what Jon was to everyone before he retired - and was the one who led me to Jon in the first place. It took me a while, but once I finally went back and started watching old clips and episodes of The Daily Show; once again I wished I had discovered him sooner. I wish I had his righteous, angry optimism to look forward to every night, but a lot of the things he's said and done on the show still hold true today. Plus, his fight for the 9/11 first responders bill to get passed was absolutely inspiring and an example we should all follow when it comes to pushing for change and holding our leaders accountable. I didn't realize he started out as a stand-up comedian, but I've since watched as much of it as I could get my hands on because he's just an incredibly smart and funny dude in any situation.
John Oliver - I hate to put John so low on the list but I didn't want to cop out and put him, Jon, and Stephen all in the same tier lol. I'll be honest, I can't really remember the first time I watched John's show. I think it must have been on YouTube at some point during lockdown or even right before, but ever since the first time I watched it I was hooked. I learn so much from him and his show and I always look forward to his next episode. Generally, I don't really watch guest interviews unless I really care about whoever is there, but since John doesn't have guests it was much easier for me to sit down and watch the entire thing without getting bored or distracted. He does an incredible job of informing his viewers about a problem that - chances are - they had no idea existed beforehand and the amount of research/investigation he and his team do inspire me to do the same. It was really weird watching his stand-up and seeing him in regular clothes and not a suit though lol.
Jimmy Kimmel - I think this might... be a controversial take. His was the third show I started watching during the pandemic - I think Stephen took a break at some point and I decided to try watching Kimmel to fill the time - and I found that I actually quite liked him. His monologues felt natural and easy, and he had a lot of his family and friends on his staff which I admired (plus Guillermo). His humor is kind of the same as my dad's though (sort of), so maybe that's why I liked him off the bat. His beef with Matt Damon is hilarious, his pranks are generally harmless and funny, and he seems very down to earth and generous for someone who makes a goddamn lot of money. Plus, I watched a clip of him back during the Tonight Show fiasco where he came on Leno's show and shit talked at him about backstabbing Conan, which earned some respect from me. I don't know a lot about what he did on the Man Show because I don't think I would touch that with a ten foot pole (and from what he says neither would he), but he seems like a good guy. (Although I will say I generally only stay long enough to watch the beginning of his show like the monologue or unnecessary censorship since I don't care about musical guests or interviews).
Seth Meyers - Again I hate to put him down so low, but I have to be honest and say I don't actually know a whole lot about him. I watched him on SNL sometimes with my dad when it was on, but it wasn't very often. I never watched his show during the pandemic as I was mainly focused on juggling Kimmel, Colbert, Fallon (gag) and Conan. Honestly it wasn't until Strike Force Five came around that I really started paying attention to him. I like that he involves his writers and his staff in a lot of his bits, and he seems like a lovely person. Unfortunately, though, he is down here a little lower but I still enjoy watching him even if I haven't watched a lot of his content. (His stand-up special is on my list, though)
Jimmy Fallon - This is a weird one for me. I watched Fallon a couple of times during lockdown and even before then I knew who he was because everyone hated him. It was on a whim that I decided to watch his show one night, and I wasn't really impressed with what I saw. That said, I didn't hate it - and when the Rolling Stone article came out I was very disappointed. And the fact that he just never addressed it publicly and carried on like nothing happened rubbed me the wrong way, and every monologue I did see afterwards just.. wasn't even puff-of-nose-air funny anymore. He became much more annoying to me, even during the podcast. The only time I found him funny were the Strike Force Wives games. Otherwise he just became painfully bland, and it's a shame because his original late night show was actually pretty decent in comparison to The Tonight Show.
As for Corden and M*her; if they were being chased by hundreds of angry geese and asked me to let them in my house for shelter, I'd shut the door in their face and laugh.
So, if you got to the end of this long ass clusterfuck, here are two pics of Craig and I at the tour :) and once again, I apologize.

Cooper: You told an interviewer that you have learned to, in your words, love the thing that I most wish had not happened. You went on to say, What punishments of God are not gifts? Do you really believe that?
Colbert: Yes. It's a gift to exist. And with existence comes suffering. There's no escaping that. But if you are grateful for your life. Then you have to be grateful for all of it...I want to be the most human I can be, and that involves acknowledging and ultimately being grateful for the things that I wish didn't happen because they gave me a gift.

17 and 18 for violence!
17. there should be more of this type of fic/art
Already answered that here.
I guess, another thing I really like and don't really see much of is how the Avengers are perceived by the public/their relationship with the media🤔
Take the Welcome Back, Cap exhibition at the Smithsonian. Loved the idea, but it raises so many questions, I can't help but wish there was more. Was he ever consulted, did he say something at the inauguration? How did he feel about it?
Also, if he agreed to film those silly videos for high school kids, I feel like doing a big serious interview wouldn't be so far off the realm of possibility.
(That, and I just like to imagine Steve giving his first interview to Colbert and then Stephen boasting about it every time Steve is mentioned in the news. It probably even becomes a bit where he just ends up sighing )
And then what about the fall of Shield, Steve disappearing after the Accords!! We never see it, but I wonder how Steve becoming a fugitive would influence Cap's public opinion.
God imagine all the slander. Rhodey rolling his eyes at the TV, Vision not understanding why they're telling such obvious lies. Tony just leaving the room.
I like to think that the public opinion wouldn't turn on Steve so easily, but who knows.
(But also, imagine Stephen's crush, which has gotten even worse by the time Steve becomes a fugitive)
Also!! Ever since Ms Marvel, I do wonder how much the general public knows about the final battle, and if they know Steve wielded Mjolnir...
I know it's not something that can generate tons of fics, but I like third povs and reactions, so it's something I'd like to see more of.
18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...
At this point I feel like the lady banging pots and pans shouting "Time travelling Steve", lmao.
Idk, I feel that the post AoU Avengers roster lent itself to the whole "Avengers living together", considering they did actually live together, but there is hardly any content.
That, or SteveSamNat on the run. I've never understood why people assume they just crashed at T'challa's and never left, but I really wish more people got behind the idea of those three going on an honeymoon adventure for like, a year and a half. It would also be a fun to imagine them accidentally running into Yelena &Nat's family (Steve and Sam gotta meet the in laws sooner or later).

I love podcasts: Savage Lovecast
There are too many podcasts on my phone. Too many favorite episodes that are taking up too much memory. So I will mention the favorites here so I can have more music on my phone.
Dear Dan Savage. Your opening monologues are so insightful and entertaining. You are the John Oliver, John Stewart, and Stephen Colbert of sex and relationship advice. Thank you for caring that much about strangers to answer their questions and for the humility to hear when you might have been wrong. I have learned so much, and so far I haven’t had to call in, because of how thorough you are and also because of how well I listen. More recently, thank you for introducing me to Rebecca Fishbein in episode 870. I enjoyed the article you referenced and the interview I heard on the micro-edition. I’m excited to also read her book. And I’m closer than I have ever been to subscribing to the magnum-edition.
enjoy.

If Barrymore's talk show was just this kind of interview with celebrities or average people who deserve recognition, I would absolutely be a regular viewer. It's so wonderful to get to see her interact with McCurdy on such a personal level. I think Barrymore is an excellent interviewer because she's such a genuine, thoughtful, talented, and kind person. She kind of reminds me of Stephen Colbert in that regard. The reason I stopped watching talk shows is because I got tired of gimmicks, such as hosts playing awkward games with guests or when hosts recite ad copy for ridiculous and over-priced products that a celebrity smacked their name onto. Barrymore truly shines when she's allowed to be herself and have a heart-to-heart with guests asking thoughtful questions, letting guests consider their answers, not having audience members hooting, hollering, and ooo-ing. This interview really shows what Barrymore is capable of, and I wish we got to see it more often because she's so amazing. Show less

Prince Harry Wishes To Reincarnate As An Elephant
Perhaps he meant he is the elephant in the house but this is how he wants to reincarnate, but it is something Prince Harry said out of fun during the Stephen Colbert interview today. “What do you think happens when we die?” Colbert asked his guest as part of the 15-question interview. “I think we become animals,” Prince Harry replied in a lighthearted tone, with a laugh. “No, I like that. Colbert/Cooper’s Spe Salvi Moment
I recently saw this video where Stephen Cobert was interviewed by Anderson Cooper and the question of faith in the midst of suffering came up. It is a beautiful and heartfelt conversation where they both shared from the depths of their own sense of loss. For many of us who have and are going through various forms of suffering I suggest you consider the wisdom that is flowing here.
I want to highlight Colbert’s response when he asked to clarify if he truly believes a statement he made with a different interview that he had “learned to love the thing that I most wish had not happened” and his belief that punishments of God are gifts. This is a powerful question and you can see that Cooper chokes as he considers the question himself. This is a very deep theological consideration. For us Christians suffering is a gift that allows us to experience all aspect of life including the intimacy of sharing in the suffering of others. His responce is “yes, it is a gift to exist” and “with existence comes suffering, there is no escaping that.” This interview is a cathardic experience for me. There is a great wisdom here for me to consider as  I consider the suffering that I go through in my life. I want to share and promote this pearl of Catholic wisdom to all those who do suffer.
The theological point that is succently made here is: Are we grateful for life? That is the foundation of Christian hope that allows us to find meaning in all the joys and sufferings we endure. If we can accept a general gratuitousness towards the gift of life than this theology of suffering will make sense to us. But this is the prerequisite condition. Do we recognise life as a gift from God? and are we grateful for that gift?
This theology of gratuitousness and suffering forms our overall theology of hope. Christianity is based on the idea that God suffers with us and in doing so redeems our suffering humanity. At the level of social justice we are also taught that Christ not only suffers but suffers a great social injustice. He is arrested, tried, punishes and ultimately executed through an unjust social system. In this sense Jesus not ony redeems our suffering humanity but vindicates the message of justice and peace that is at the heart of his own teaching.
One of my favorite doctrinal teachings from Pope Benedict XVI was his encyclical teaching on hope titled Spe Salvi. What Colbert and Cooper reflect on are deep theological truths that are at the center of this Papal teaching. Pope Benedict XVI instructs us on the redeeming quality that suffering has. Not only in allowing us to find meaning and hope for the pain we go through, but also by placing it in the context of our deeper social commitment to the unjust sufferings of others.
The true measure of humanity is essentially determined in relationship to suffering and to the sufferer. This holds true both for the individual and for society. A society unable to accept its suffering members and incapable of helping to share their suffering and to bear it inwardly through “com-passion” is a cruel and inhuman society.
To suffer with the other and for others; to suffer for the sake of truth and justice; to suffer out of love and in order to become a person who truly loves—these are fundamental elements of humanity, and to abandon them would destroy man himself.
I shared a post some years ago about an American politican who also preached on this Catholic wisdom after the assasination of Martin Luther King Jr. Like Colbert he shared on his own experience of suffering and loss and raised the wisdom of a Greek philospher who also found hope and meaning in suffering. In that post I have RFK’s famous recorded speech that he made in Indianapolis. If you listen to his speech please consider the social message he offers the African-American community as he shares this wisdom.
Tumblr media
As I mentioned above, Both Colbert and Pope Benedict XVI also reminds us that for us Catholics/Christians God suffers with us. The teachings of Jurgen Moltmann (who deeply influenced Liberation Theology), came out of the experience of World War II. He reminds us that a Crucified Christ is a Christ that both experiences unjust suffering, and empowers us to respond to the personal and social suffering that we see in our society. Pope Benedict XVI is very much promoting this teaching in his encyclical.
The Christian faith has shown us that truth, justice and love are not simply ideals, but enormously weighty realities. It has shown us that God —Truth and Love in person—desired to suffer for us and with us. Bernard of Clairvaux coined the marvellous expression: ‘Impassibilis est Deus, sed non incompassibilis’—God cannot suffer, but he can suffer with. Man is worth so much to God that he himself became man in order to suffer with man in an utterly real way—in flesh and blood—as is revealed to us in the account of Jesus's Passion. Hence in all human suffering we are joined by one who experiences and carries that suffering with us; hence con-solatio is present in all suffering, the consolation of God's compassionate love—and so the star of hope rises.

Post-AGT Appearance 1233: The Late show with Stephen Colbert January 3
Side Order of Love would have dropped to 99th place, The Weathervane points to Love would have dropped to 86th last weekend.
Pope Benedict XVI would have started in 17th place, peaked at 8th in 2017 and died 21st.  Barbara Walters would have started in 53rd place, peaked at 48th in late 2015 and died in 78th place.  I would have to prepare a comment about her.  Still in Trinidad, I would have written it early Tuesday.  The Colbert people would not post it until after the show aired, so Colbert himself could read it first.  I previously mentioned that he would have read a post between commercials.  By now the Colbert moment would be a daily entity during the first commercial break.  That’s when he would quote me.
Colbert: As you know, 2 legends passed away this weekend.  The Catholic world is grieving His Holiness pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.  America is mourning a national treasure: journalist Barbara Walters.  If anyone was wondering, our friend Phil Cole has made an announcement about both of them.  First, about Benedict XVI:
(He quotes verbatim from the last post.)
Colbert: Then, regarding Barbara Walters:
PBC: Phillip and Cole’s Variety Team is perplexed that anyone thought Barbara Walters makes Phillip sick.  Most of our team has fond memories of this devoted journalist. We all wish we had started earlier so she might have interviewed us, especially one member of our team who had a crush on her for decades.  We will be happy to talk to you about her when we join you live on January 12.
Colbert: That’s it folks.  Don’t miss our episode a week from Thursday, when Phillip and Cole’s Variety Team will be here and eliminate another suspect.

Brace Yourselves The Mario Film Will Have Toad Sing
I can not unsee his eye folds. Screenshot: Illumination / Nintendo / Kotaku Earlier than The Tremendous Mario Bros. Film’s lack-of-cake teaser picture and subsequent lack-of-an-Italian-accented Chris Pratt within the trailer took over the web’s unconscious, rumors of there being musical numbers sooner or later in Nintendo and Illumination’s animated movie perked followers’ ears. Now, these rumors have been lulled to mattress as truth due to Keegan-Michael Key, the voice of Toad, who confirmed that we’re gonna get to listen to the cute little mushroom man sing. Whispers that characters within the Mario film would escape into music first began percolating on the interwebs again in April when Jeff Grubb of Big Bomb reported the rumor that there can be a “handful of songs” within the movie. Now, Keegan-Michael Key has confirmed that Toad can have a musical second throughout an interview with Selection. Nintendo “I received to improvise a music in ‘Tremendous Mario Bros.,’ which was an absolute blast. That was only a stick of enjoyable, that entire factor,” Key instructed Selection. Followers have wasted no alternative to critique Guardians of the Galaxy actor (and stomper of…KOOPAS!) Chris Pratt’s vocal efficiency because the titular plumber for sounding like simply his regular voice with hints of a mailed-in Brooklyn accent. Key received forward of any suspicion about his vocal chops as Mario’s shrill companion through a self-report of him being a “theater fucking actor nerd” as a child to Selection. That’s most likely no shock to anybody who’s seen Schmigadoon!, and Key has beforehand proven off his spectacular singing voice in an interview on Colbert, however singing as a grown human man and singing as a resident of the Mushroom Kingdom are two various things. “There was one thing concerning the timbre. I wished it increased and better and better. And that’s the place we ended up, and I’m actually proud of the place we ended up,” Key stated. CursedMarioTeeth.jpg Screenshot: Illumination / Nintendo / Kotaku Learn Extra: Mario Film’s First Trailer Reveals Chris Pratt Sounds Like Simply A Dude, No Accent Key’s Variety interview coupled with Jack Black saying he “did somewhat little bit of rocking” as Bowser throughout his panel at New York Comedian Con additionally recommend Grubb’s reported rumors that we’d get to listen to Bowser sing about his “youthful years” might have some reality to them. “I did deliver a few of my heavy metallic roots. Bowser is form of like a heavy metallic rockstar, an enormous, robust, and scary rockstar,” Black stated at NYCC. “I believe you’ll be shocked to see that Bowser has a musical aspect. After the film comes out, I would take it to Broadway.” We already know Black as a purveyor of rocking and rolling that would give the satan a run for his cash from his excellent songs with Tenacious D. Hell, he may even captivate an viewers with a baby’s toy. So why not let the enormous dinosaur turtle dude enthrall us together with his impeccable singing voice as effectively? Let’s simply hope that, come Tremendous Mario Bros. launch in theaters on April 7, 2023, our man Mario is just delegated to tambourine responsibility or as Toad’s backup dancer.     Originally published at Sacramento News Journal

Okay but like your Jake Tapper and Chris Cuomo fics are giving me the life and boost of serotonin I need to finish this semester. Also like Chris Cuomo is deffo the guy who is like super caring and attentive afterwards right?!? Or do I just have the wrong perception of him?
YASS yes yes yes I'm getting the "beefed up fuck your brains out but super sweet and cuddly after sex" kinda vibe from him. God I guess I'm writing another Cuomo one cause now I'm having heart palpitations. Having said that, Tapper still has my whole heart.
