I am stoked to wish @thebooktopus a very happy birthday with a nameplate and a rec list! Maddy deserves all the love in the world for being such an amazing person who lifts others up. It must have been late last year/early this year when I started seeing her pop in regularly via various Discord servers (and she also mods a few too!). When @anaxandria-writes recced a Maddy fic and invited her to the Wizarding Creators Den (where we were getting hyped about said fic being complete), I was super excited! Once Maddy and I got to know each other and realised we both loved Drarry AND so many rare pairs, the rest was history. Let’s be honest: Maddy is a true sport when it comes to cheerleading and supporting so many people. She’s sweet, passionate and easy-going as an alpha and a beta. Right off the bat, you can tell Maddy loves stories and ideas, and she wants to help fellow creators out. She’s engaged, and since she’s an avid reader of many things, that offers a wonder opportunity for new, beautiful friendships to form. If you want someone to scream about your work (WIP or finished), Maddy is your person! Her insights on everything are also optimistic and heartfelt. It’s all in the comments she leaves for people. She’s thoughtful in what she says, and you can feel the appreciation and enthusiasm she has for each work she reads/views. I'm sure folks who have gotten comments and tags from her know what I’m talking about. Her words truly mean a lot. Can we talk about Maddy’s gorgeous recs? YES, because there are sooo many good ones! These always brighten up my day when I see them on my dashboard. Her recs have been one way I’ve been able to find, read and add fics to my TBR list. I also think Maddy has a special superpower to read and absorb all the things, because the time and effort it takes to keep up and make monthly recs is impressive and labour-intensive. She’s currently killing it with Game of Drarry fic recs right now, and you can see ALL of her recs here. ALSO, her Mutuals March project. OMG. Maddy was a gem to go through so many creators’ works to shine a spotlight on each one of them. This must have been a beast of a project to take on, yet what a delight was it to see so many works I haven’t seen before! I thought it was a brilliant project when I first heard about, and little did I know that Maddy would surprise me by going through my works, showering them with comments AND giving me my own post. I have never had anyone do that for me before, and this just shows how kind Maddy is to make people feel like their work matters to fandom. Since then, Maddy has become one of my regular supporters, and I’m grateful and lucky to call her a friend. While I’ve been challenging myself to make and approach new projects in different ways (whether it be ships, mediums, formats, or even writing more one-shots and writing a bunch of microfics), Maddy’s encouragement has always been so uplifting. She has made me realise I am better than I give myself credit for, that my work is unique, and that I should run with that. So, that’s what I’m doing! If Maddy doesn’t have a full plate already, she made HP Next Gen Fest happen this year (which just finished posting) to spread the love for alll the next gen ships. Andddd of course, she’s a writer who has written some excellent Drarry fics and rare pair stories! Maddy has a way of embracing humour, flirting, fluff and sass all in on go, which makes character dynamics fun yet sexy! Quite of few of her fics have made me go down some rabbit holes and wanting more. Here are some of my fav Maddy fics: 🦑 >>> The Dragon Tamer & The Snake Slayer (Charlie/Neville, E, 17.7k)
Summary:  Professor Neville Longbottom has an unfortunate crush on his newest colleague, Charlie Weasley. Charlie, who is pure magic personified, even in a wizarding world. Whose scars and laughter make Neville come undone. Charlie, who could never be interested in Neville... right?
Remember that Maddy fic rec I mentioned above? THIS IS IT. I did not know I needed this fic until I read it, and gods, I love Herbtamer more now. There’s a wonderful acknowledgement to demisexuality, an excellent use of consent, and the energy between Neville and Charlie’s friendship is so warm. Also, these two mesh so well together that they fit like pieces of a puzzle, as they should. 🐙 >>> Let Me Count the Ways (Drarry, E, 3.6k)
Summary: Intimacy comes in many forms. Draco wants to explore them all with Harry.
OKAY. This is such a beautiful and well-written fic for sooo many reasons. What an amazing take on asexuality, and I adore how Draco wants to make everything so good for Harry. They’re both so soft, and full of sooo mannnyy feelings. All of their actions and words are enough to prove that they absolutely love each other. Seeing all the ways their relationship changes over time will make you melt into a puddle. If you want some sexy fluff, go read this!| 🦑 >>> Are Those Drugs in Your System, or Are You Just Happy to See Me?  (Drarry, T, 1.3k)
Summary: While Harry is out on patrol on New Year's Eve, he stumbles (literally) into Draco. When their eyes meet, Harry is immediately concerned - why are Draco's pupils so wide? Is he high? Nope. Turns out he's just in love.
What a sweet and fun read! If you want some classic Drarry banter, you’ve got it in here. Also, Draco is absolutely precious, blunt and sassy, just the way we like him. Such a wonderful take on a NYE fic. 🐙 >>> Life After Quidditch (Flintwood, E, 11k)
Summary: After a career-ending injury, Oliver Wood is forced to take an early retirement. And what does early retirement look like for famous Quidditch players? The charity circuit. Galas, bake sales, auctions—you name it, Oliver’s agent had signed him up for it. Oliver didn’t know what to expect from this new life, but it certainly wasn’t Marcus Flint popping up at every turn. Or for him to be friendly and welcoming, unwilling to let Oliver stew in his self-loathing. Or for him to look so good in yoga pants. Or to fall for the git.
The way Maddy writes Flintwood is outstanding, and this fic does not disappoint. She has such a way of bringing in teasing, humour and all the UST together when it comes to Oliver and Marcus. Their banter is spot on, and I also love how these two have changed as people since school. Of course, Oliver tries to figure out how the world still exists when Marcus isn’t antagonising him (aka Marcus has other ways to push Oliver’s buttons that doesn’t involve fist fights). And the charity events? Hilarious. 10000% worth the read to see how these two get together, and for all the clever lines and flirting. You can find more of Maddy’s work on AO3. Make sure to leave kudos and comments to show appreciation for her fandom contributions. Maddy, you are truly special and one of a kind. Thank you again for spreading so much love and for making so many people feel seen and cared for. I hope you have a wonderful day!

Hi, I'm back :)
You're a great writer and I know you'll deliver something wonderful. And gee, it must be challenging and fun to write about characters while you haven't finished the books yet!!!
I loved playing The Sims. I remember playing an old version where I couldn't go out to catch a catfish properly and my sweetheart would die from an exploded bladder! I was like 😭😭😭 it was a monster punishment for her to go through so much humiliation choosing to eat or go to the bathroom (sometimes the poor thing didn't even make it).
Of the books you mentioned, I only got to watch the movies😭 and now it's kind of tradition to watch HP at Christmas time.
The annoying thing about growing up and maturing is that we end up finding books we used to like predictable. That's why there are books we read when we were teenagers that we thought were incredible and which are now impossible to read, because it would totally ruin the emotional memory of our experience at that time. It's another book to read once in your life and never reread. Haha
ACOTAR works miracles in reintroducing. Judge me, I never finished ACOTAR, hehe.
I'll definitely add it to my list here ;) ahn, I've heard of these books and "divine rivals" is on my list too!
I've heard the rumors surrounding the author too, and they weren't good. Well, it's not entirely the plot, but a part that involves it, but the book itself was fine, since I knew what I was getting into when I went to buy it and I think it did what it set out to do.
Welcome back! 💜💜
Thank you so much for your supporting words! I was able to post one of the two fics I was struggling with earlier today. And I totally scrapped the other one and wrote it from scratch again. It is a total challenge because I have yet to fully grasp their characteristics, that's what I believe.
In all honesty, I only do interior and exterior design 🤣🤣. I have yet to fully gameplay it. And I should probably do so one day.
Oh goodness, HP is a tradition to watch during Christmastime. I actually watch it during Halloween and Christmas! Such an iconic movie. The books are great, much more in-depth than the movies of course.
Oh yeah, I could never re-read those books again, I wouldn't be able to get the same experience as I did with the first read-through. I could never re-read a series or a book if I finished it. Mostly because I start to remember what the heck happened. 🤣🤣 I was going to try to re-read LOTR, since that book was so thick and plot-heavy and has so much lore that I forgot most of it. So that might be on the TBR re-read list.
Is there any books that you might want to re-read mostly because you've forgotten more of the lore?
I do not regret reading ACOTAR. Like you said, a great reintroduction series to read again. And that's like my friend! I tried to get her to read ACOTAR, just the first book, and she was like, "I keep getting distracted. My attention span is so short." I understand, that getting through the first book is difficult.
I'm excited to read that duology, in all honesty. When Target had the buy one, get 50% off, I legit was like BUY DIVINE RIVALS. 🤣🤣🤣
So, I'm guessing it wasn't that bad of a read?

43. are you an avid reader?
i am absolutely an avid reader. both of fanfic and original fiction as well as nonfiction. i’ve got certain style preferences, but overall if you put it in front of me i’ll read it. my tbr list on goodreads is 225 books long, and that’s just what i’ve remembered to add. i’m constantly in the middle of multiple books at once, especially because school often cuts into my reading time, and things i want to read have to be set aside in favor of working.
i’m currently actively reading the following:
This Is How You Lose The Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone - a sci fi epistolary romance between two agents on opposite sides of a time war. it’s queer, and the style is wonderfully declarative and succinct. i’m only a couple chapters in so far but it’s fabulous. was recommended to me by my harry potter phenomenon course professor, whose opinion i value greatly
The Body, a Guide For Occupants by Bill Bryson - a nonfiction exploration of the human body, from a cellular level upwards and outwards. dry humor, witty beyond belief, full of weird facts to text your friends and make them ask “cori, what the fuck, why do you know that?” for example: did you know that our bodies don’t have wetness receptors on most of our skin? we rely on temperature cues to let us know, which is why sitting down on something cold often feels like sitting on something wet. it’s wild. i’ve been meaning to read some of Bryson’s work for a while now, and this seems like a good one to start with. i’m also looking forward to digging into his books on other subjects.
Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? and Other Questions About Dead Bodies by Caitlin Doughty - this is actually my second read through of this & it’s for a purpose. i’m annotating it to pass off to a friend, in a weird sort of informal asynchronous book club we’re doing. it’s a casual walkthrough of questions kids have asked california-based mortician Caitlin Doughty and her answers. Doughty is a personal hero of mine, and her writing is sharp, witty, and conversational in all the right ways. i was exposed to her through her youtube channel Ask A Mortician, and reading her writing feels incredibly similar to watching her videos in the best way. though the book is written in answer to children’s questions i think it’s great for all ages - lighthearted but still serious it’s a great intro to conversations about death for those who aren’t entirely on the Death Positivity train the way i am. i’ll stop rambling about her now because i could talk for hours - feel free to message me or shoot another ask if you’re curious for more about her and her work
things i’ve read this year i’ve enjoyed:
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune - oh so cute gay romance between a social worker for magical children and the caretaker of a remote magical orphanage that houses the strangest assortment of children. LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT
Harry Potter 1-5 by she who i revile and will not name - took a course on the series impact on society in a literary and social sense. was supposed to read all the books. only managed to get through 5 before the rest of my course load swamped me. will probably launch a full reread through soonish, once i get through the 26 other books i want to finish in 2021 (lol as if cori)
Still Warm, Still Warm by @tsauergrass - read today, hugely atmospheric, lovely portrayal of draco and harry, they’re both idiots and they’re in love and it’s just really wonderful to sink your teeth into
The Ordeal of Being Known, and its sequel The Rewards of Being Loved by @lou-isfake - read a few weeks ago and have not stopped thinking about since. rich world, beautiful relationship build. competent yet anxious draco, magically powerful harry, it’s all there. and the writing... oof. lou makes me want to be a better writer myself
Telling the Bees by @cibeewastaken - yes i know how it’s tagged i promise it is worth it it’s so lovely i keep revisiting the last bit for how harry confesses to draco. it’s just. wow. just trust me on this one
there are literally so many more fics i could tag or rec but i will limit myself to the 3 (4) i have here because this is already too long and all you wanted to know was if i read, not what i’m reading or recommendations. i hope you check some of them out anyway, and i hope you enjoy them if you do. in another life i’m most certainly studying to be a librarian, and that impulse takes over sometimes, oops?
ask me questions from this list!

I’ve decided, at the last minute, to take part in #NonFictionNovember! I have a lot of non-fiction on my TBR so it seems like a good time to read more of it. I struggled to make an exact TBR as generally once I make a list of books to read my brain decides it wants to read anything but what’s on the list! This time I’ve picked a selection of books that I really like the sound of – I’ve deliberately picked more books than I’m able to read in a month in the hope that having more choice will keep me on track. I do have some fiction to read and review so I may not read exclusively non-fiction but I aim to mostly read it in November.
I’ve predominantly picked books that I owned before 2017 so that I can use these books towards my Goodreads Mount TBR Challenge as I haven’t managed to complete that as yet, hence why there aren’t any new books (other than review books) on this list. I’ve tried to make my list a mix of easier non-fiction to balance some of the more challenging books in the hope it keeps me on the non-fiction track for the most part!
#NonFictionNovember2017 was started by abookolive and Non Fic Books on YouTube.
Their prompts for this reading challenge are:
Home
Substance
Love
Scholarship
and you can interpret these prompts however you like.
  Here’s my #NonFictionNovember TBR
Hystories by Elaine Showalter
This is one of my picks for the scholarship prompt. I first heard about Elaine Showalter when she was giving a talk at the university that I was about to start. I loved her talk and went on to read two of her books soon after. For some reason I never got around to reading this one so it seemed a good choice to aim for during this reading challenge.
Nothing is True and Everything is Possible by Peter Pomerantsev
This is another book that could possibly fit into scholarship as Russian politics is something I feel I should learn more about and this book looks like it could be an accessible way to start. It’s also a book that’s been on my TBR for a while so it’s time I picked it up.
Essays in Love by Alain de Botton
This is my pick for Love seeing as it has love in the title! I’ve had this on my TBR for a while too and it seemed a good pick for something to dip in and out of during this challenge to break up some of the heavier books on my TBR.
It’s Not Yet Dark by Simon Fitzmaurice
This book doesn’t really fit any of the challenges but it’s a book I’ve own for a long time and really want to read. It’s a book about the author being diagnosed with MND and how he has come to terms with how that has changed his life. I didn’t read it for a while because there was a time when this felt like it might be too close to home but that time has passed now and I feel ready to read this.
The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell
This book could fit into home as it’s a book about a couple making a new home for themselves in Denmark. I’ve wanted to read this for ages and so I’ve added it to this TBR for some light relief if I find myself needing it.
The Emperor of all Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee
This is my pick for substance as it’s a biography of cancer and looks at the way cells can go rogue within the human body. I’ve wanted to read this for so long but it’s a subject that I find really hard to read about. I’m using this challenge to push myself to read it at last because I feel sure it will be fascinating.

The Lonely City by Olivia Laing
This book is on my TBR simply because I really want to read it and I think it might have a different vibe to other books that I’ve picked and so might be good to change things up a bit.
Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life by Justine Picardie
I’ve had the lovely hardback of this book on my TBR for about seven years now and I have no idea why I haven’t read it yet as it’s a book I really wanted. I also love the author’s writing so I’m hoping that I’ll be able to fit this book in this month.
Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman
This is a recent buy but I’m so looking forward to reading that I’ve added it. I may well end up not reading this as I want to focus on books from before this year but I’ve put this on the list in case I get stuck at any point and then I know I can pick this up. It’s the book that inspired Roger Waters to write Amused to Death and as I love that album I am very keen to read this book!
Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan
This is another book that I’ve wanted to read for a long time and I don’t know why I haven’t done so as yet. I feel like this might be a one sitting read and so perfect for this reading challenge.
Mercury and Me by Jim Hutton
I do like memoirs and biographies so have added this one as it will break up the other books I have on my TBR. I’m a huge Freddie Mercury fan and can never resist books about him.
The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson
I love Jon Ronson’s books and this one is on a subject that fascinates me so I’m keen to see how he approaches it.
Small Acts of Disappearance by Fiona Wright
This is an essay collection that I’ve been looking forward to and it seemed like a good idea to have another book that can be read on and off throughout the month.
The Undertaker’s Daughter by Kate Mayfield
This is a memoir of Kate Mayfield and how it was to grow up living above a funeral parlour. It sounds like such an interesting read and when I flicked though it seems like a really accessible writing style so seems a good book to have on the list for a reading challenge.
Dear Cathy… Love, Mary by Catherine Conlon & May Phelan
This is a book of letters written between the two authors in the 1980s and it just sounds so wonderful and nostalgic. I can’t wait to read this one!
#gallery-0-42 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-42 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-42 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-42 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Selfish, Shallow and Self-Absorbed by Meghan Daum
This is a book that I bought ages ago now and really wanted to read but then the time never felt right. I’m really interested to read about women who’ve chosen not to have children though so a collection of essays seems like a good book to add to this challenge.
A Pound of Paper by John Baxter
This book has been on my TBR since before I had a Goodreads account (more than nine years). I’m mortified because it’s a book about a book addict and I feel sure I will love it. What’s more is that it’s in a lovely hardback edition and when I picked it off my shelf to make this TBR I just wanted to curl up with it right away. Therefore this book also fits the challenge of home for me because books are home to me.
Culture and Imperialism by Edward Said
This has also been on my TBR for a long time (more than ten years!). In fairness I have read some of it for my degree but I never sat down and read the whole book. I’ve kept it all this time so there must be something in me that still wants to read it so I’m including it in this TBR. I will just say that my edition has small text and my eyes aren’t great at the moment so this book may not get read this month but I’m including it on the list to keep it fresh in my mind so that it doesn’t languish on my TBR for another ten years!
I also have some Non-Fiction ARCs to read so I’ve included them in my reading plans too
Riot Days by  Maria Alyokhina
This is a book about the Russian band Pussy Riot and how they were imprisoned. It sounds like such a fascinating read and I’m keen to get to it soon. If I don’t manage to read it during this reading challenge, I will aim to have it read and reviewed before the end of this year.
The Day that went Missing by Richard Beard
This is a memoir of how the author looked back at what happened on the day his brother drowned and the aftermath. It sounds like a really moving book but it’s one I want to read soon.
Rest in Power by Sybrina Fulton & Tracy Martin
Trayvon Martin was shot dead whilst innocently walking home minding his own business; he was seventeen years old – it was such a shocking story on the news when it happened. This book is his story as told by his mum. I’m sure this will be a heartbreaking read but it’s important that books like this are read and spoken about.
The Book of Untruths by Miranda Doyle
This is Miranda Doyle’s memoir told through lies – this was all I needed to know about this book before I requested it on NetGalley! I’m so keen to read this book and hope to get to it this month.
Gone by Min Kym
Of Women: In the 21s Century by Shami Chakarabati
I just got and ARC of this book this week so I’m adding it to this list of books that I may get to this month. It does sound like it could be a very prescient book given what is happening at the moment with the #metoo so I’d like to read this soon if I can.
Chase the Rainbow by Poorna Bell
I was unexpectedly sent a copy of this book for review a little while ago and it sounded interesting so I added it to my TBR. The subject matter sounds tough as it’s about the author’s husband’s suicide but it’s so important to be more aware of mental health so I want to read this one soon.
Currently reading
This House of Grief by Helen Garner
I’ve been reading this book for the past few weeks but I had a spell where I just wanted to read fiction so it got put to one side. I picked it up again this week though and am back to being engrossed in it.
Good Night and Good Riddance: How Thirty-Five Years of John Peel Helped to Shape Modern Britain by David Cavanagh
This is a book that I’m dipping in and out of and it’s just wonderful. I highly recommend this if you love music and John Peel.
A History of Britain in 21 Women by Jenni Murray
This is an audiobook that I spotted when I was looking for non-fiction in my Audible cloud. I’d forgotten that I had this on my TBR but as soon as I saw it I knew I wanted to listen to it asap. I started listening to it today and am really enjoying it.
The Everything Store by Brad Stone
I can’t remember buying this book but it’s been on my TBR for ages. I started reading it last night and I think it could be a really interesting read.
Are you joining in with #NonfictionNovember2017? If you are I’d love to know what you plan on reading for this challenge.
My (rather ambitious!) TBR for #NonFictionNovember2017 I've decided, at the last minute, to take part in #NonFictionNovember! I have a lot of non-fiction on my TBR so it seems like a good time to read more of it.
