Double life kids, eight years later
The final designs for the kids. Wont make anymore, unless I finally get on with making that Superhero au I said I would do a few months ago
Anyways
I’ve been working really hard on these designs, and some of them are probably the best I’ve ever made! So I really hope you like them!

Liana
(A few years down the road, the watcher genes started to become more prominent. The extra pairs of wings and the eye change are just the beginning too! Her color palette is kinda a mess but it’s just how she rolls. Top hat with goggles and a corset because Steampunk vibes are cool. Also her Flyguy bow, just in case)
Parrot pal has successfully started her own business, where she sells everything from deep slate to gold to clothing and mercenary jobs. The wider the spread, the better the bread
Lives very close to the shopping district, to keep an eye on her shops
The Watcher thing sure is…interesting. Grian hasn’t told her the full story, so she isn’t sure exactly what she is but she knows that it’s something unworldy
Is still learning to disguise it
Has a fierce rivalry with Mumbo over trying to become the riches hermit. Mumbo had no idea this rivalry is happening
She’s bestie with her little brother, Grumbot Prime

Wes
(Golden boy. His Hc and current design has a lot of similarities, mainly because when it comes to change he likes to take things slow. Got a haircut tho, plus many tattoos and a circlet to represent his status as the son of the sun god (Tho who knows how true that actually is). Also has a skull ring, in honor of Jekiv)
Baby boy is doing fine. Mostly
Is decked out in gold because again, he loves to mine, and gold is his favorite ore
Lost part of his ear and hearing in a creeper explosion, least favorite of his scars
Has improved his self confidence greatly over the years, which in turn improved his relationship with his dad
(Side note, I can imagine Xisuma whitelisting like a therapist or something just because these three, especially Wes, has some things to work through)
Is actually an extremely skilled farm creator, just like his other dad
Spends a lot of time trying to find a way to fix their code so they can leave and rejoin servers

Gertrude
(Total princess warrior vibes for her. Wanted her to be a mixture of Butch and femme, in the weirdest way possible. She’s now also wearing shoes! I wanted her to have heels alright? Her soles eventually got worn out so she’s wearing a pair of boots)
One of the best warriors on Empires SMP
Used to have separate outfits for being a monster hunter and being a noble, but eventually just combined the two to make her life easier
(Eddie made her armor, she’s very grateful)
The armor had to be made fireproof, because despite being older she still scuffles playfully with Johnny
She went through quite a large number of weapons before settling on the mace. It just, “fit her”
Also very few people can actually lift her mace, because it’s extremely heavy.
Sometimes helps out fWhip in Gobland with redstone, just because it’s fun. She enjoys the challenges that he presents to her
Wants to someday face ten withers and take down them all. Until then, she will train with all her might

Johnny
(My friend told me he looked evil lol. Ran out of cowboy outfits a long time ago, so here’s a more outlaw vibey one. The goggles and scarf are to protect his face from sand though, so likes there’s a reason lol. Butternut stands proud at the scene as well)
Despite his outer appearance, he’s still the nice lad you all know and love
He is more of a free roamer nowadays though, mostly traveling the mesa around Tumble Town, sometimes even beyond it
After Liana left for Empires, Johnny started helping Pix out with his excavations
When there’s word of a new discovery far away from any of the empires, you can bet your ass that Johnny is he first man on the case
And sure, he caaaaaaaaaaan use his elytra and get there in maybe half a day, but that beats the point of traveling!
An absolute expert at dealing with mobs at this point, especially creepers. Goes fucking crazy with that whip of his
Despite it all, he’s still a simple country bumpkin at heart, who likes his breakfast early and his music country

Jassy
(Queen is extremely anime. I just searched “anime ninja female” and tried to get general style of outfit correct. Her hair was almost impossible, but looking on it now it looks fantastic. Her daggers are also enchanted, that’s why they’re purple lol)
Jassy is a trophy wife and she takes her job very seriously
She does know her way around redstone, and she ain’t a bad builder (She’s the one who made her and Liana’s base), but her wife is out making bank while she takes care of their many, many cats
The mercenary part of Double Co. is her entirely though.
The story behind her damaged eye is a mystery to all, as every time someone asks about it she makes up some new fantastical tale
In reality she was flipping her daggers while laying down on the ground, then accidentally dropped one. It ain’t as cool as fighting an alligator, or taking down twenty wardens at once though

Jekiv
(Glow up of the fucking century my dude. He ain’t abandoning his love for pastels anytime soon, but that almost makes him more scary. Exchanged his old staff for a scythe just for the aesthetic. If you look closely at the hand holding the scythe, you can see a golden ring)
*Becomes a mass murderer* ~Character development~
He’s still not a full fledged necromancer yet, though he can summon entire corpses now. Actually getting them to do his bidding is another thing
The squirrel on his shoulders is named Chimp. She’s his familiar, and she’s thirsty for blood
Has spent nearly four years trying to solve the mystery of The Evermoore, but hasn’t come out with much result
Did find out he has no soul, or at least not a traditional one, so that’s neat!
Existential crisis aside, Jekiv is also trying to figure out a way for their code to be fixed.

(Pov: Ur about to want and rip your ears off. Hat decorated, coat fluffy, heels fucking iconic, my man has the drip. A weird drip, but the drip nonetheless. And after all these years, he still does the ruined makeup look. Some things never change)
Switched to playing the bagpipe, because those things are both loud and difficult to learn to play. Novo does not know how to play, but that doesn’t stop him one bit
Best big brother to Oli’s child, and with that I mean the absolute worst influence a child could ask for
Actually managed to reconcile with Scott, despite all odds. It’s not a perfect father-son relationship, but like none of them have that so it’s fine
Wears a lot of pink partly to match with Gert, and partly because it’s a loud and obnoxious color, so it garners attention
The wealthiest of all the kids, just by people paying him to leave him Tf alone
There’s some fic ideas I still have with the kids, plus maybe the fourth series will give me some new material, but these are probably the final designs I will make for them.

Another fic for the Metal Hearts au, hope you'll enjoy Oh, I've also started a discord group for people who enjoy the various Grumbo kids. Like Grum and Jrum and the Grum variants, but also Tegg, the shulker kids or even NPG.
But here's Chapter 1 of 'Do Bots Dream of Electric Lives?'
Grumbot had rebuilt a ‘small’ starter base for the sixth time. It wasn’t just that he had been tweaking the design, but he was tearing the build down completely before starting from almost scratch, still having blocks on hand. He stared at it for a few moments before pulling out his axe to start tearing it down once more, only stopping when Jrumbot ran over. “Noooo! I like this one!”
“This isn’t your base, this is mine. You can build your own.”
“But I can’t build.” Jrum complained. “And this isn’t even your base! You’re just building whatever!”
“It will be my base. I just want to plan it correctly. It will be my first.”
Jrum huffed and crossed his arms. “Nuh uh. Technically we shared a base with our dads!”
“Yes, technically. And there were two of those bases, so they would be on equal footing, so neither was really a first base, so this will be mine.”
“Well Dad said he just lived in a shipwreck he found. He didn’t have any plans!” Jrum argued, and Grum looked like he was ready to snap back, but then Mumbo came in to calm things down.
“Your brother is right, Grum.”  Mumbo patted Grum’s head for some reassurance. “You don’t need to have a plan for the upcoming season, and if Grian were here, he would agree.”
“But he’s not.” Grum huffed, and then pulled away to start taking down the test build.
“Your dad can have a life outside of Hermitcraft, you know. Sure, some of the other Hermits are with him, but he’s having fun with some friends he doesn’t get to see as often.” Mumbo then started to help gather any materials Grum was missing in the destruction and put them in chests. “Once you get settled in Season Eight, it might be nice for you to explore outside of Hermitcraft, at least a little.”
“I guess.” Grum replied, but he didn’t sound too convinced. “But it feels too early to try and think about such a thing.”
“Maybe. But mentally preparing yourself can- oh for goodness sake.” Mumbo cut himself off as he looked at a machine flying across the sky towards his base, pushing around a few diamond blocks that were familiar to him. “They finally made it in time for the end of the season.”
“Huh? What are those?” Jrum asked, looking ready to run after the contraption just to get the diamonds.
Mumbo sighed, though a laugh made its way in as well. “Last season, Grian Iskall and I made a big business called Sahara. Those were our profits which we sent to the next season, or rather, this season, to give us a boost at the start. Or whenever they arrived.”
“Which is only finally now.” Grum added oh, making Mumbo huff indignantly.
“Then you might want to grab them then so you can pretend ODEA made a profit.” Jrum added, which only made Mumbo look sadder, though laughing along once the bot started giggling.
“Well, I’m going to make sure Iskall doesn’t run himself ragged.” Mumbo said after they had calmed down from the joke. “Xisuma said he wanted you two to drop off anything you want for the next season. He’s already noted down your presents since they were already approved, but if there’s anything else, talk with him.”
“I suppose you’re telling us this hoping we’ll do it now?” Grum asked, putting down the blocks he was about to use to rebuild the test starter base yet again.
“I trust you two to make it over there on your own. And the sooner the better in case either of you realize you’ve forgotten something and need to talk with him again.”
Jrum nodded and grabbed onto Grum’s hand, already dragging them in the direction of Grian’s base, where a good portion of their stuff was. “Okay! We’re gonna do that then! And say hi for us!”

Grumbot watched as Jrum had filled another shulker box with items. “You know X won’t let you talk all of that to Season Eight, right?”
“But why not? It’s just a new home, right?”
“Not really.” Grum answered, getting up from the shulker box he had been sitting in, one of three he had packed, though he was trying to get it down to two. “It’s supposed to be a fresh start for everyone. Dad’s wardrobe is probably the only thing he’s going to bring along. You and I are just exceptions because we just had our birthdays and we’re younger.”
“But… So I can’t bring my shop wares?”
“No.”
“Or my diamonds?”
“Nope.”
“What about Professor Beak?”
Grum paused for a moment to think. “He might be allowed to come. But a new world is probably going to be dangerous for him.”
“That’s not fair! What can I even bring?”
Grum opened up one of his shulker boxes, showing off the pile of paper inside. “Well for the most part I just have my IOU’s. Another box has some of the toys and treats I got as well as the posters. The third has what building blocks I think I can get away with.” Then Grum shrugged. “There’s other stuff too, but that’s the bulk of it. I’m pretty sure Xisuma won’t give this back to us still in shulker boxes. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t even get it back until starter bases are set up.”
“Wait, what are we going to do for charging at the start? If we don’t have a base…”
Grum hummed in thought. “I guess that’s something we should ask Xisuma. Someone probably has an idea if he doesn’t. He might even give us emergency redstone treats until we’re in a better situation.”
“I hope so.” Jrum said, though sounding a little worried. He stood there for a few moments more, just thinking, before slowly going back to his shulker boxes. “Grum, can you help me figure out what I need to take out?”
Grum nodded and then went over to Jrum. They went through the shulker boxes and pulled out items, mainly resources like diamonds, redstone and quartz. Jrum ended up with a little more than Grum, mainly because he refused to give up some stuff that, while we’re likely to be rejected, Jrum was hoping he could convince Xisuma otherwise or find some sort of work around.
Once they had picked up the boxes, Jrum had them go through the Nether tunnels so they could bring Professor Beak along more easily. It took a little longer than just flying to Xisuma’s base would have taken since their dad’s portal wasn’t the safest, and climbing while holding and controlling a parrot could be rather difficult. Still, the pair managed to reach Xisuma’s portal without any harm and only one close call.
The one issue with Xisuma’s base was that it was a number of buildings all separated from one another. Once the bots were out of the portal, it was then a matter of finding Xisuma. They dropped off their shulker boxes and Professor Beak next to the portal before flying around the base to look for the admin.
After finding nothing in the more common areas, the bots then started looking at the farms with similar luck or lack thereof. Around the time when Grum finally thought about giving up and just messaging Xisuma, there was a sort of screeching noise that came from one of the buildings, a noise that sounded like Jrum. 
Grum immediately flew in that direction hoping his brother wasn’t hurt. He landed in one of the buildings he thought they had checked already, but then more noises had the bot digging through the ceiling to find Jrum essentially hissing at Xisuma, who was barely managing to keep the bot away from himself. It seemed like Jrum wanted to tear the admin limb from limb, which was rather confusing to Grum. The one thing he could think of that would upset Jrum would be that X had already said a certain item couldn’t be taken to the next season. Well, that or the redstone contraption Grum had just noticed to the side. What it was, he had no clue, but that meant it could be the issue.
Grum went over to Xisuma and Jrum and then pulled his brother away, getting a thankful sigh from Xisuma. Jrum tried getting out of Grum’s arms to go back to attacking, but to no avail. “Why are you trying to attack Xisuma? Did you already start asking about our stuff and what we could bring along?”
“No!” Jrum shouted, still wrestling against Grum’s grip. “He’s going to burn all of his diamonds! He’s just going to waste them!”
“I’m not wasting them. I’m making it into a sort of… treasure hunt.” Xisuma started to explain. “Once we wrap up here, other people will be able to explore this world. They’ll theoretically know about the diamonds I’ve put here and will race to try and find them before they’re all gone.”
“That’s stupid!” Jrum argued, but Grum thought it was a nice idea. Jrum just liked diamonds a bit too much compared to most people.
“They are Xisuma’s diamonds, he can do what he wants with them. It doesn’t look like the machine is even going yet.” Grum assumed, since he could hear the bubbling of lava but nothing burning, but who knew if the redstone would work that way. “So can we just ask Xisuma to check our stuff over?”
“I assume you’re referring to the items you want transferred over to the next season.” Xisuma spoke up, getting a nod from Grumbot. After they took a few moments to calm Jrum down a little, they all went back to Xisuma’s portal to where everything was placed.
Xisuma looked through the shulker boxes, approving most of what was there. He explained how they would be stored and once the two had a starter base, either each their own or a shared one, most of the items would be given to them. 
As expected by Grum, Xisuma said the shulker boxes wouldn’t be returned. He also couldn’t let them bring over the blocks and redstone that had been a gift from Hels since the only reason they were allowed was because it was the end of the season. While the bots were saddened by that, Jrum cheered up when X allowed Professor Beak to go to the next season at the same time as the other items would be returned.
Lastly came two items that stood out from the others. Two pairs of elytra, each of them custom made for each bot. During the birthday parties for the bots, Prof, Doc’s Hels and creator of these elytra gave Xisuma what he would need to potentially make more. And as main admin of Hermitcraft, it was easy enough for X to use the information he was given and summon in extra ones.
For season eight, Xisuma was looking into more ways to change the world so the others could have a little more comfort. It had already been done with the armor stands people, mainly Cleo, customized, and recoloring materials was small but helpful. The miniature blocks that wandering traders gave was another thing the others enjoyed, and there were other things used on a player to player basis.
Certain concerns were only brought up at the parties and following meetings. Thankfully a few of those concerns had already been brought up, which was part of the reason they had the party at all. Technically the season was meant to end earlier than it was going to now. But trying to figure out ways to help the bots in the early stages of the season and even further into it had delayed things.
With the elytra being brought up, Xisuma explained how things would work, not just for the elytra, but also food and beds. The Hermits had already been informed that something new for the world would be changing the appearance of an object, to put it simply. Drawing from that, but taking it to a higher level, the commands the Hermits would have access to for that also had a variation specifically for Grum and Jrum. If either of them used the right command while holding the appropriate object, the item would change to what they needed. A normal elytra would be turned into a customized pair for them, while beds would turn into their chargers and food would be replaced with charged redstone that would be named the same as the food and couldn’t be used other than being eaten, just to keep things fair.
While Jrum mainly just nodded along, Grum made sure to take notes for the two of them, likely to also review them with their dads later to make sure everyone important was on the same page. Probably Xisuma would mention it to them as well, but better to be safe than sorry. Though sharing with a Grian was going to be hard. “By the way, has there been any updates about dad and the others?”
Xisuma looked up at Grum’s question, pausing in some extended explanation to Jrum in how the cosmetic feature would work. “Oh, I haven’t heard too much, and even then, there’s no telling how long it will last, but Grian thinks they probably won’t last too much longer. But it could also go longer than he assumes.”
Grum grumbled at the answer, but reluctantly accepted it. Some information was better than none. And it seemed Xisuma was one of the few people who was in contact with everyone in… what had his dad called it again? Third Life? Whatever. Since it ending would give the hermits a day or two afterwards to officially prepare to leave, it made sense X would want to keep updated to know when the season was really going to end. 
“Well, I think that’s about it for your items. If you want to check anything else later, feel free to message me and I can meet you at the portal.” Xisuma said after making sure he had checked them all. “Much easier than you two needing to search the base for me again.”
Grum thanked Xisuma while Jrum started stating the admin down, having been reminded of the diamond burning machine. He younger boy needed to be dragged away, but thankfully with Xisuma’s explanation of how they would get elytra, it meant they could keep their current pairs and fly home.
Mumbo unfortunately hadn’t arrived back yet, so the bots sent him a message to say they were back at the base. It was late enough at that point and the travel had drained their batteries, so Grum and Jrum turned in early. Jrum had a little trouble going to sleep at first, which led to Grum being kept up until he handed a book to Jrum to read, which seemed to quiet him down.
After a few minutes more, Grum shifted into sleep mode. It was mainly just to help with charging, but sometimes he would have some semblance of dreams. And with all that was going on, a little distraction seemed like it would be nice. He couldn’t control if he had dreams or not of course, but that hope was there. And it seemed like that night, he would have them, or something at least.

Father Spore Spy AU Chapter 5
It’s back! And on a Saturday too.
Summery: Grian and Mumbo react to the video and Father Spore returns to the main camp.
“Oh my Void,” Grian mumbles, staring at the video as it plays. His mind has been running through worst case scenarios for a while now, but there was no way he’d ever consider that this is what happened. His horror only grows as the video continues, as Scar one by one takes care of the guards. Grian can almost feel the menacing aura the other is emitting. The video ends and Grian still is at a loss of words, Mumbo seems to be just as lost.
Cub breaks the silence after a minute, “whatever that stuff is, it… changed Scar. That’s not- it’s not Scar,” he adds in a whisper.
“Can… can you… unchange him?” Grian asks quietly, fear lacing his tone.
“I’ll keep trying until I do,” Cub swears, although the sliver of doubt in his voice is clear to Grian. “I‘ll keep working until I figure out a way to undo all of this, to bring him back to us.”
Grian stays silent as he processes that, letting Mumbo reply. “We should get to work on that as well, including getting people to completely stay away.”
“That’s a good idea,” Cub replies, “I need to get back to looking into what we collected. The first step to fixing this is to understand what it is.”
“Right, of course,” Mumbo replies, while Grian is still unable to form words. There’s a click as Cub hangs up, leaving them alone again. Grian slumps in his seat, curling up a little, seeing Scar like that… it hurts to see him so… so not himself. That look in his eyes… Grian really hopes they find a cure, but they don’t even know the first thing about what happened to him. How can they find a cure to something so unnatural and wrong.
He startles out of his thoughts by a hand on his shoulder. Grian looks up to see Mumbo staring at him, sympathy in his eyes, mixing with his own worry. After a moment he says, “we… we should make an announcement.”
Grian takes a slow breath, nodding after a moment, “y-yeah. I… I could get on that now.”
Mumbo gives him an assessing look, “you sure?”
“Yeah.” He needs something to do, he doesn’t trust himself to be left to his thoughts at the moment. Grian grabs some paper and a pen from around Mumbo’s office to draft an announcement, not wanting to be alone either.
They sit in silence as they do their own things. It doesn’t take that long for Grian to finish with a rough draft. “What do you think of this?” He asks, turning the paper around for Mumbo to look at. He picks it up and reads through it. Grian speaks before he can finish, “it’s just a basic idea, nothing final.”
Mumbo nods, “I think it’s good, it gets the important parts down.”
“We should probably have posters around as a constant reminder, in addition to the speech.” Grian adds, leaning back in his chair, “we should get someone to design it soon, if we do.”
“We should do whatever we can to help. The more people who catch that… whatever it is, the more cure we’ll need.”
“Which might be difficult to get,” Grian finishes for him, wincing at the thought. He really hopes that they can figure out a cure soon. He hates the idea of leaving Scar like that for an extended period of time.
“We can trust Cub on this, he’ll figure something out.” Mumbo’s tone sounds confident, but it’s clear he’s just as concerned as Grian is. How it’s a desperate hope.*
“Yeah…”

Father Spore returns to the main camp and watches silently as his new sporelings get settled in. They have a good area cleared for living spaces, but it will get overcrowded sooner or later.
As he looks across the area, Father Spore feels a twinge in the back of his mind, something he can’t place. He follows the feeling, dropping down next to one of the glowing mushrooms. He lightly touches the under the cap of it and raises his hand. It grows along with it, continuing up until he can’t reach anymore. The cap spreads as he pulls his hand across. It casts a pretty light across the area.
He walks along the pathways, doing the same thing to other mushrooms. It feels… not familiar, but definitely not foreign. Father Spore surveys the clearing after he fills the area with the glow. He smiles, it looks better this way.
As he continues looking around, he notices a lot more things he can add or change to improve the aesthetics. He’s not sure why it’s so important to him suddenly, but it feels wrong to not have it look pleasing.
Father Spore supposes he can take a moment’s break from planning to pretty up the area.

Hermit DSMP Swap AU: Part 8.1
Over the course of the next couple of days Scar helped George and Skeppy get settled in. He introduced them to the other Boatem People. There was Pearl, who lived in the upside down boat house, Impulse, who Skeppy thought looked a lot like a buffer version of George, and Mumbo, who had an impressive mustache and lived in an RV pulling a tiny house. 
Scar helped George build a mushroom house in the space between Pearl and Impulse's houses, while Skeppy very quickly got involved in helping Pearl prank everyone on the server by tipping their cows (and every other animal for that matter) upside down. She had to convince Skeppy not to tip anyone's named pets though. 
The Boatem hole was opened up to the void. Now that Skeppy could get a good look at it, it kind of terrified him. The never ending darkness. George tried to push Skeppy in, which led to Skeppy chasing George around with a diamond sword for a good ten minutes. Scar fell in several times. He seemed fine, though that could be debatable. Falling in the void had to have some kind of consequences, didn’t it?
Scar got a new, bigger, better hat. Skeppy tried stealing it, trading it back and forth with George as Scar chased them around Boatem begging for them to slow down. Pearl even showed up and joined in the hat trading, but then she made them give it back. There was something under her chipper mannerisms that neither of them wanted to cross. She was nice, but Tubbo was nice, he had nukes, Foolish was nice, he controlled lightning, Puffy was nice, she killed Ant. In their experience, nice meant dangerous. 
Grian got bored just sitting around all day and was soon back to his usual pranks. He summoned a giant tree golem with Pearl’s help that tried to eat Mumbo’s van till Mumbo talked to her and calmed her down. His peace, love and plants thing really did come in handy sometimes. Mambo found out that her name was Treesa. Now she just sat watching over Mumbo’s house and humming to herself with the sound of rustling leaves and groaning wood. Sometimes Mumbo could be seen sitting on her shoulder talking to her as she listened, her eye’s closed and her branches swaying in the breeze as she soaked in the sun.     
Impulse opened up a shop called I-Soar selling elytra and rockets. Skeppy and George were fascinated by them and when no one was looking they stole some elytra to give them a test run. Skeppy immediately flew into a wall and died, while George fared a little better but died when he tried to land. Everyone's inboxes were buzzing with notifications as a string of death messages appeared in the chat. It didn’t take long for Scar and Impulse to find the two culprits. Skeppy tried to jump off the roof he was standing on and fly away, but he timed it wrong and landed with a splat, his items going everywhere. George started running, he was on the ground and unable to get any air.
Impulse was easily able to catch up to him with his own elytra. When Skeppy returned for his stuff Scar and Impulse admonished them for stealing. Then they gave them some flying lessons, showing them how to use the rockets to give them a boost and how to land without taking damage. They were only fifty percent successful. Though, when they were done they made them return the Elytra. To be honest, Skeppy and George were both quite done with the whole affair and glad to be back on the ground. The novelty had worn off a while ago and Skeppy and George were tired of constantly dying to fall damage. 
Grian designed a game of hide and seek that involved the Dragon egg, while George and Skeppy secretly plotted to steal it when no one was looking. 
Skeppy also finally decided to build a base for himself. He collected a ton of diamonds. Some of them came from his enderchest (Which he seemed to still be able to access). A bunch of them he got from taking a page from Scar’s book and going door to door, selling the Hermits random junk. He may have also taken all the diamonds from the center of the diamond ore tower outside Cub’s base. They were just sitting there in the open, practically asking to be taken. Using these diamonds Skeppy made a diamond block box house (When he ran out of diamonds he used dirt) in the middle of the town center next to the Boatem pole. 
The look on Grian’s face when he saw it was totally worth all that work to get the diamonds. Grian practically begged him to take it down or move it. He even tried bribing him with more diamonds but Skeppy insisted that it was the most beautiful house in existence and he was going to live there forever. He even threatened to move it onto Grian’s front lawn. 
This place wasn’t that bad, Skeppy was actually enjoying himself here.

Skeppy was nowhere to be found. Bad had searched through their mansion, and at the locations of their various projects, he even looked around the Greater Dream SMP, calling Skeppy’s name the entire time. The Diamond was gone. 
This wasn’t the first time Skeppy had gone off on his own for weeks to sulk, only to come back a month later as if nothing happened. But usually he would at least make a big huff about how he was leaving and never coming back and how Bad was a bad friend. This time there was none of that. He had just left. 
Bad felt a tightness in his chest as tears pricked at his eyes. Was he really that bad of a friend? What had he even done to make Skeppy run off without even saying anything? They had already made up after the whole egg debacle. 
Bad shook his head “No, I’m a good friend. I’m the best friend. He’ll be back any day now, he’s probably just running errands or something,” Bad tried to convince himself... now that he thought about it he didn’t know where Skeppy went off to whenever he ran off. 
Without even realizing it Bad found himself standing near the entrance to the spider spawner... the entrance to the Egg’s domain. He stopped. He had been free of the Egg’s influence for several months now. But the egg might know how to find Skeppy. The Egg could find Skeppy. No. Bad tore his eyes away, shaking his head and walking briskly down the path in the other direction. He had tried that before, it hadn’t ended well for him.  
Bad felt a pit in his stomach. He genuinely regretted the things he had done while under the Egg’s influence. But the Egg could give him what he wanted. No. it never actually gave him what he really wanted, he knew that now. He knew that then too, he just hadn’t wanted to believe it... He didn’t need the Egg... but... it would be there. As a last resort. If all else failed.
[Notes: This one was inspired by another comment by @the-local-scp, Thanks again. I wasn’t originally planning on writing Bad’s perspective for a while. Skeppy runs off all the time. But then I thought about it and it makes sense that he would notice. He always notices, and this time he has no idea why Skeppy left. Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed. This is the end of my pre-written stuff. The next one is probably going to be a bit of a long one so it may take a while before it gets posted, or I may break it up into smaller chunks... we’ll see]

Ray Hijacks the Team ZIT Ghostbuster AU Again
So @shadeswift99 made a few posts a while ago about a Team ZIT(S) ghostbuster AU, And then I may or may not have hijacked the post to add in ideas for most of the other hermits because why not.
Now, back then I was spitballing ideas and making them up on the spot, which is admittedly my usual writing process, but hey.
That said, I've had more time to think about it, and then last night I blacked out for a few hours and came to with a Google Doc filled with short bios for all of the hermits and a handful of hermit-adjacents. Now, this rapidly turned into an urban fantasy AU in my hands, but hey. It's fun.
This is in alphabetical order, with alternate personas (EX, Helsknight, Beetlejhost) beneath their original counterparts when applicable:
Bdubs
Lives in an old mansion in the woods alongside Doc for reasons known only to them. Bdubs works as an interior designer, with a side gig as a freelance hairdresser. His eyes are unnaturally large, similar to Keralis’, and he is at least partially a plant. Completely feral and frequently gets in trouble for having knives on him at all times. He and Cleo have a thing called Knife Club which makes everyone else nervous. Nobody messes with Knife Club. It’s not worth it. Sunbathes frequently.
Beef
Is a perfectly normal human being. He works as a butcher with a side gig as a graphic designer specializing in album covers and spends his free time playing pokemon and dragging Etho along to social events. He was the first person to spot the cryptid, and the first person who Etho approached of his own accord.
Biffa
Is a ghost possessing a robotic shell. Biffa is from the future. While initially his main goal was to get back home to his own time, Biffa has since made friends and settled down into a new life running a cafe specializing in a wide range of teas. He’s quite content with this, and has actually found himself far happier than he was in his own time. While his nature means he can see, hear and touch ghosts, his body was built specifically for a disembodied soul to be in the driver’s seat, and he doesn’t want to risk another taking control. Also, he has more important things to do than have fistfights with ghosts.
Cleo
Is a ghost possessing her own dead corpse. Her nature allows her to see, hear and touch ghosts. Can and will fistfight spirits. She works as a teacher, so she’s usually busy, but occasionally in really nasty situations the Beetlejhost will drag her in to break a ghost’s legs. Does sculpture in her free time, and is actually really good. The only one who can wrangle Beetle to any real capacity, and she’s learned to keep him on a fairly short leash. Housemates with Joe, and Keralis also pops in pretty frequently. Has Knife Club with Bdubs. Has an enchanted flower crown that prevents her from decaying further; a gift from Beetle. Recently started learning magic in the form of necromancy and illusions. Has an ongoing ‘feud’ with Zloy, in which she temporarily traps his soul in random inanimate objects every now and then.
Cub
A bit of a ‘mad scientist’ archetype, Cub’s experiments are not exactly the most ethical, though they’re at least more professional than Doc’s. Responsible for the creation of Jevin. Cub gets possessed stupidly easily- sometimes willingly- and can usually handle it himself but sometimes has to call for help. Has a magical method of communication with Scar for exactly this reason. Has a day job as co-owner of a business called ConCorp, which he started with Scar. Has probably broken the Geneva Convention.
Doc
Was presumably human at one point. Now an abomination. Repeated experiments on himself have resulted in a massively changed facial and foot structure, a body covered in mottled green scales, claws, and goat horns. He lost half his face in one of his experiments, and constructed a new cybernetic one. He lost his right arm fighting God. Killed said god and would do it again. Lives in a mansion in the woods with Bdubs, though nobody’s really sure why. Owns a casino because of course he does. Also a living crime against fashion, because the man refuses to wear anything other than his tattered lab coat, torn jeans, and crocs.
Ely
Runs the local radio station. Nobody’s ever seen him in person, and nobody knows where he gets people’s voice clips for his remixes. Probably a cryptid. Maybe a ghost. Seems pretty chill, despite the blatant invasions of privacy.
Etho
Is a cryptid. Lives out in the woods in an abomination that can barely be called a house. Has never been seen in anything other than full Kakashi cosplay. Tends to keep to himself, but occasionally lets Beef drag him along to social events, often with Doc and Bdubs. Nobody really knows what his deal is. Probably not human. Probably.
False
Used to be part of an illegal underground cage fighting ring, until she earned enough to buy her way out. Having grown up in said ring, she struggles to adjust to normal life, but living in a town where the barista is a robot and the local tailor has wings makes it easier. She now has a job as security at Doc’s casino, alongside Iskall.
Grian
Is either an angel or a demigod, but nobody knows which. Has wings. Is both a tailor and an architect. A complete gremlin who has elaborate masks of various birds and will wear them to commit crimes. Eats seeds. Messes with everyone else’s plants. Lives in Jungle Wood Flats. Volunteers at the local theatre.
Hypno
Has three eyes, but hides the third one under a bandanna at all times. Can see ghosts with it. Had problems with sections of plumbing randomly getting clogged and also making very weird noises, and eventually called Team ZIT when the plumbers couldn’t find the source. Was prepared for ghosts, but wound up with a slime creature instead. Works in a $2 store for some reason.
Impulse
Is fully human. The most sensible member of Team ZIT (which admittedly isn’t saying much), Impulse has a day job as a freelancer building custom PCs and fixing broken tech. Agreed to the whole ghostbusting deal because he was bored, mostly. Was the first one to meet Skizz face-to-face, and is the one to own that particular place outright. Gets possessed every now and then, usually by larger spirits. Used to run solely on caffeine and chronic anxiety until Zedaph started getting on his case about his sleep schedule. Now he runs on less caffeine, more sleep, and the same amount of chronic anxiety.
Iskall
Was part of a cloning experiment to create the ultimate hitman, and was the only known one to both survive and escape before the whole thing was shut down by the authorities. Their eye and arm were replaced with cybernetics in order to increase their already enhanced abilities, and they were chased by said authorities, eventually winding up on Mumbo’s doorstep and becoming Mumbo’s problem. Now works as security at Doc’s casino, alongside False. Lives at Jungle Wood flats. Occasionally volunteers at the local theatre. Does bonsai as a hobby.
Jevin
Is the slime creature in the pipes. Hypno lets him live with him under the condition he stops blocking the plumbing and making weird noises at 3 AM (Jevin still blocks the plumbing and makes weird noises at 3 AM, just not as much as he was). Has taught himself to take a humanoid shape, and likes having fingers. Sleeps in the bathtub because he can. Was created from a vat of chemicals in a secret lab underneath the house, which used to be owned by Cub. Doesn’t really talk to the man in question that much, but will occasionally refer to Cub as his father for the sole reason of watching him go through eight existential crises in three minutes. Has a glock.
Joe
Head librarian at the local public library, and has read a lot of books on Supernatural Things. Is a veritable fountain of exposition if you can figure out what he’s saying or have Cleo along with you to threaten the integrity of his shins. Has never been seen in the same place as the Beetlejhost. Are they the same person? Are they entirely separate beings? Is there a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde-type situation going on? Who knows!
Beetlejhost
Literally nobody really knows what his deal is. Nobody. Team ZIT ran into him on a call that they expected to be a false alarm and then he decided to follow them home. Spends most of his time being a minor nuisance in the most bizarre ways possible. Is implied to be responsible for the Ever Given getting lodged in the Suez Canal, but never confirmed. When he’s not bothering Team ZIT or getting them out of tight spots, he’s usually pestering Cleo, the only one who can keep him in line. It’s not really known if he and Cleo have a history or if they’re just Like That.
Keralis
Is a ghost haunting an architecture firm, and is mostly bound to the building, though he can travel to other buildings the firm has built, which is, uh, most of them. Initially only able to do small things- mostly writing notes or drawing diagrams- he eventually meets the Beetlejhost when the latter follows Mumbo to work one day for shits and giggles (he wanted to see how long he could mess with Mumbo before the man noticed. As it turned out, about a week, and by the end it was Iskall who noticed). After a couple of days in which Beetle teaches Keralis Ghost Things™, he scares half the office when he finally manifests for the first time. Has unnaturally large eyes and nicknames for most of the workers. Has no idea how he died or what his unfinished business might be. Very knowledgeable about architecture, and his input is usually very much appreciated.
Mumbo
Is a perfectly normal human being who does IT at Keralis’ architecture firm. Lives at Jungle Wood flats and spends most of his free time tinkering with tech and trying to keep Grian and Iskall out of trouble, which is a losing battle. Has a large, beating golden heart in his flat. He’s not really sure what its deal is, but if he feeds it apples it produces enough power for the entire building. Oh, and if he forgets to feed it for an extended period of time it starts draining his bank account. It’s really weird.
Pixlriffs
Was a perfectly normal human being until he died protecting a certain Russian zombie and became a perfectly normal ghost. Was a reporter in life and is a reporter in death. Runs a blog alongside Zloy about the local goings-on, supernatural or not. The blog’s the type where unless you live in/near the town you most likely won’t stumble across it, but they do have a small following of outsiders who assume the blog’s just a work of fiction. His unfinished business is to prevent Zloy from doing anything particularly stupid, a constant battle. Is able to go more places than Zloy due to being incorporeal, but respects people’s privacy. He’s bound to Zloy to a certain degree, not being able to go beyond a certain range of his friend. The range is pretty big, though, and he has plenty freedom of movement.
Python
Had a run-in with the fae as a kid, in which he accidentally pissed one off. In retribution, the faerie challenged him to answer a riddle or he’d be turned into a snake. Python’s answer was partially correct, so the faerie only transformed him partially. Python is fairly chill, though he strongly dislikes the cold and starts hissing if anyone disturbs him during Sun Time™. Sometimes Bdubs, being partially flora, joins Python for Sun Time™. He’s not venomous, because, you know...python. Also, he has a mildly disturbing habit of strangling rats and mice and then eating them whole, but he can’t help it and just tries not to do so when he has company.
Ren
Is a werewolf. He’s pretty chill regardless of form, though it’s only been recently he’s been comfortable enough leaving his ears and tail visible. He works as a lumberjack. One time Pixl introduced him to Monty Python’s Lumberjack Song and it quickly became his favourite thing. He spends most of his free time volunteering at the local theatre because Ren is absolutely a theatre kid and nobody can convince me otherwise. Gets possessed every now and then. Lives in Jungle Wood flats.
Scar
Works as a landscape developer. Gets possessed absurdly easily, though not quite as frequently as Cub. Has a magical method of communication with him. Technically co-owns ConCorp, but isn’t as involved. His cat, Jellie, is very obviously an eldritch abomination in feline form and he is comedically unaware of this. Lives in Jungle Wood Flats with Grian, Iskall, Mumbo, Stress, and Ren.
Skizz
Is the ghost haunting Team ZIT’s office. He was murdered by someone he’d thought was a friend who was trying to use his place to hide from the cops, and he’s stuck around, haunting the building. His unfinished business is to make sure nobody else uses the building for anyone shady, but the ghost rumours tended to chase most people off. Eventually he gets used to having Team ZIT around, and when Tango admits he doesn’t really have anywhere to go one day, Skizz eventually makes the decision to finally unlock the still-furnished upper floor for him. He’s bound to the building, but Impulse learns that carrying Skizz’s old vest with them allows him to leave. After that, Skizz sometimes accompanies them on missions and occasionally just hanging out. He’s usually more helpful than the Beetlejhost is.
Stress
Is a witch. Stress lives in Jungle Wood Flats and works as a doctor who specializes in supernaturally caused injuries- Team ZIT are some of her best customers. She also sells magic potions of various kinds, and has a side gig as a florist. She’s 90% of the Jungle inhabitants’ impulse control. Also has cryokinesis.
Tango
The Team ZIT member with a car. He gets possessed with frankly ridiculous frequency, but claims not to believe in ghosts for a long time (and keeps up the bit for even longer). Has developed various signals to indicate when he’s being possessed again. The strongest one, a rather nasty demon Cleo and the Beetlejhost had to team up on, left him with his glowing red eyes. He didn’t really have anywhere to go before Impulse bought the office, and tended to sleep on the couch or in his car until Skizz decided to let him into the upper floor, where he now lives alongside Zedaph and Impulse.
TFC
A now-retired ghostbuster, TFC calls in Team ZIT one night when he finds himself in over his head against a ghost with a grudge. He winds up becoming a bit of a mentor figure to the trio, usually coaching them over the phone if they’re not sure how to deal with one of the stranger spirits. Lost his leg years ago in a fight with a poltergeist that could have gone better, and now has a robotic prosthetic made by Doc.
Wels
While Team ZIT was out investigating some rumour or another in the woods, they came across a large stone box. Following video game logic, I guess, they then decided opening this large stone box sounded like a fun idea. Well, Tango and Zedaph did. Impulse was a bit more hesitant. The box actually held a medieval knight who’d been put in an enchanted sleep for centuries by his demonic doppelgänger, and was very much not prepared for modern life. Team ZIT took him to Xisuma, who happened to live closest, and Wels is currently helping out on the farm and trying to adjust to life in the 21st century. He can understand and speak modern English just fine because magic. Volunteers at the local theatre quite a lot.
Hels
Is Wels’ doppelgänger. Technically a minor demon. Won a fight with Wels and sealed him away for centuries as a result. A recurring problem. His real motivation is that he really desperately doesn’t want to go back to Hell, but he’s too proud to admit it. Lives in the woods with EX, who’s basically his only friend, though the weirdo with the brown cardigan keeps pestering him about his backstory and feelings for some reason. Has minor pyrokinesis.
XB
Like Biffa, XB is also a ghost from the future, though it seems to be a different timeline than Biffa’s. His unfinished business is preventing the apocalypse, but he has no idea how to do that, no idea if he’s in the right timeline, and is pretty sure he’s gone back a lot farther than he probably should’ve. Also, there’s the whole paradox issue, where if he prevents the apocalypse he never has a reason to go back and prevent the apocalypse, so he doesn’t prevent the apocalypse, so he has to go back and- he tries not to think about it too much. He mostly just hangs out in an abandoned house on the edge of town and vibes.
Xisuma
Is a beekeeper. Nobody’s ever seen his face; when he’s not in his beekeeping outfit, he’s either wearing a helmet, or (more recently) an extremely lifelike and detailed animal mask (is it a mask?). Actually a shapeshifting alien, he crashed down to Earth after a scuffle with his evil clone and was stranded because Earth doesn’t have the right tools or resources to repair a spaceship. These days he’s actually found he’s happier tending to his bees, selling honey, and helping his friends out, and probably wouldn’t leave Earth even if he could. It’s a simpler life, but a pleasant one. He bonds with Biffa over a shared love of tea and being stranded in a technologically inferior world and finding a home.
Evil Xisuma
Is Xisuma’s clone. Feels that if everyone’s going to call him ‘Evil’ he may as well own it. Shot his original’s spaceship down in a scuffle but wound up being brought down with him. Currently hides in the woods. Generally more of a minor nuisance than an actual danger. Used to spend his free time bothering X but has gotten put off by Wels, who has a problem when it comes to evil clones. His friends consist of Hels, who is a terrible role model, and Zedaph, who’s trying to help him work through his problems behind everyone’s backs. Can summon lightning because he deserves it.
Zedaph
Is the reason Team ZIT is ghostbusting in the first place. He’s a sheep shearer by trade, but that’s a fairly seasonal thing and ghostbusting is more fun anyway. Has somehow never been possessed, and claims it’s because he’s always standing next to Tango. He makes sure the other two gets enough sleep Because we all know they can’t be trusted to do it. Probably has some sort of really bizarre and situational magical powers he is thoroughly unaware of. Qualified to be a licensed therapist. Made friends with Evil X at one point, somehow.
Zloy
Like Cleo, he’s a ghost possessing a corpse. Unlike Cleo, there’s a good chance it’s not his corpse. Eh, it’s not like anyone else was using it. Runs a blog with Pixl, because why not. Was already a zombie when he met Pixl, who was still alive at the time. His body is a bit more decayed than Cleo’s, but it’s fine. His goggles are enchanted with the same preservation spell; it’s not really ever explained where he got them from. Has no regard for privacy but is fortunately unable to turn invisible or phase through walls due to inhabiting a physical body. Both can theoretically physically fight ghosts and has enough time to physically fight ghosts, meaning he would be a valuable ally if he could be bothered. Lives in a graveyard. Has an ongoing ‘feud’ with Cleo, in which he puts jabs at her on the blog. Once spent a week as a (very sarcastic) floating potato.
Hermiton
Is the name of the place they all live in/near. Located in an ambiguous location in an ambiguous country, Hermiton is technically large enough to be considered a city but has Town VibesTM. Supernatural going-ons are a fairly normal part of life, and a good number of inhabitants aren’t humans. Despite this, the wider world seems mostly ignorant of the existence of ghosts, magic, etc. I’m not too sure about geography, but it’s surrounded by forest in most directions and in a warm enough climate to not have snow in the winter (so Python doesn’t, you know, freeze to death). Most people don’t tend to bat an eyelid at strange-looking people walking down the street or serving them at the store; they’re used to it by now. There are several theories as to why Hermiton specifically has so much going on when it comes to the supernatural- ley lines, secretly the resting place of some long-forgotten god, et cetera- but it’s actually more of a case of ‘people who have supernatural traits hear rumours of a place where a lot of people have supernatural traits and go there in search of answers/a place to belong’. This doesn’t exactly explain where all the ghosts came from, but hey. Nothing’s perfect.

guess who’s back at it again in @martuzzio‘s space outlaw au! this is a bit of a shift from my last two, so please heed the warnings below! if you want to know details about any, or think any others should be added, then drop me a message. it’s also over 7k, buckle in.
usual psa, may not be completely canon to the au. i pick & choose depending on what’ll be most fun, and its up to marzo what (if anything) she wants to keep!  enjoy it as it is!! (aka wels has longer hair in this because i have a crayon licence that says ‘i do what i want’.)
featuring: mumbo has a meeting on his home planet that goes wrong in an impressive way, wels has a sword, an evil tech guy villain, hurt/comfort, me being annoyed i have to use grunts instead of minions because i only see yellow things & good ol’ last minute rescues
warnings: violence, electrocution, mind control esq device (not used on anyone), injury, attempted kidnapping, brief imprisonment, pseudo-science lmao
"So I'm on babysitting duty." Wels is an intimidating sight in his suit, sword glinting in his hand. Mumbo finishes slicking back his hair, trying to get the parting perfect before he replies.
"You're not that much older than me." Compared to some of the hermits, at least. Nobody can come close to Xisuma, anyway. Wels laughs, checking his sword over.
"I feel it." He tilts his head towards Mumbo with half a smile. "I'm pretty much ancient next to you." Mumbo scoffs, flicking through his design folder again. Thankfully, this is more of an exchange than a pitch. Mumbo's improved, certainly, but he'd argue his reputation does most of the work for him. It's the main, if not only, reason he's back here.
"You're going to look it if you bring an actual sword to a tech meeting." Wels shifts his hold, the sword pointed towards Mumbo in an instant, narrowly avoiding the glass screens he's holding.
"Think you can stop me?" He teases, one eyebrow raised. There's the hint of a smirk on his face. Mumbo breathes out, relieved he's not offended him by accident.
"Didn't say you couldn't, did I?" Wels's shoulders rise with a smile, his sword coming to rest at his side.
"Smart decision." Wels picks up his weapon holster. A brief meeting or not, they all know better than to leave the ship without protection. Iskall refused to let Mumbo go until he checked each of his weapons, cleaning them thoroughly. His suit has been examined too, even if he's leaving the helmet on their ship. He knows the air is breathable here and it'll probably help if he's recognised. Wels has his helmet under his arm, waiting to put it on. "You ready to go?" He asks, holding his hand out. Mumbo nods, patting his folder and weapons.
"Got everything I need," he replies. Wels gives him a last smile before putting his helmet on, checking its secure then nodding.
"Let's go get you to that meeting, then." Mumbo glances around the shuttle, making sure everything's shut down. It locks with a satisfying beep. "You know where we're going?"
"Think I remember my way around." Wels nods, gesturing for Mumbo to go ahead with a bow. It's only slightly sarcastic. Mumbo makes sure to roll his eyes as he takes the lead.
He'll admit, it's nice being back on his home planet. Stepping out of the hangar bay to concrete roads and pavements. White buildings reach into the sky, entwined with greenery and tunnelling the layered streets. It's not often he gets to come back here. Plus, he might get to prove himself and his designs. If this works out, it's a massive step for him.
With all its familiarity, it's still strange being somewhere so busy. Cars and buses float down the roads, and they pass by people as they walk. Families with kids, couples, mostly people in the business wear Mumbo recognises. The pair get a few second glances as they make their way through the city. Wearing the suits is a bit of a statement. In truth, Mumbo didn’t want the stress of changing for the meeting. He would've spent forever worrying about what to put on and how he wants to present himself. Whereas Wels would probably live in his suit if given the chance. They're more common in a city like this than in other places, but hardly a frequent sight in public. Being part of the Hermits might also garner some looks, but they should be fine here. It's friendly territory.
Wels sticks close to Mumbo either way. Even without seeing his expression, he can tell how carefully Wels examines their environment. Mumbo feels safer having him here. He wouldn't want to come on his own. The building they're looking for is at the edge of the town centre, a tall office building with an angled top. The same pristine white as the rest of them.
"This it?" Wels asks, crossing his arms. He's looking up at the building.
"Yep."
"Fancy." Mumbo can't help a soft noise of amusement. Inside is a wide lobby, with a fountain of all things at the back of the room, cushioned seats and plants filling the space. It's also strangely empty. The front desk is obvious enough. A hologram of a receptionist appears when they get closer.
"Hello and welcome to Dukes Crown Limited!" The voice is like a parody of a person. Mumbo's never liked the voice of AIs. The closer they are to human, the more uncanny they become. "What is your reason for visiting?" The wide smile never changes. Mumbo shivers.
"Mumbo Jumbo, I'm here for a meeting." The hologram remains still before jumping to life, pointing to a lift at the back of the lobby.
"Your meeting is on the thirty fifth floor, office A. Is there anything else I can help you with?"
Mumbo shakes his head quickly, "Nope, that's all, thank you very much."
He's already turned towards the lift as the AI replies, "You're welcome. Enjoy your visit!" Wels joins him as he walks, leaning in close.
"Are they always that creepy?" He whispers, sneaking looks around the empty lobby.
"Unfortunately." He's never been completely comfortable with them. It's all superficial programming. You give something the ability to think and then limit it. "Lobbies aren't usually this empty either. Must be a busy day." Wels hums, sounding unconvinced. He follows Mumbo into the lift anyway, waiting in the corner. It takes Mumbo a second to find the right button. He tries to block out the cheery music and focus on his breathing.
"I don't like this," Wels states what they've both been thinking. Mumbo stares at the door of the lift. He breathes in deep, holding it before letting it out slowly.
"We can't exactly back out now," he says. He's come this far, taken the entire ship off course for this meeting. He knows Xisuma would understand. Gut instincts are there for a reason, as they've all learnt. But Mumbo wants something out of this. Maybe it's selfish.
"We could." Wels gestures to the panel. "We press the button, go straight back down and walk out of that fancy front door."
"You can if you want to," Mumbo tells him. Wels turns to him and Mumbo wishes he could see his expression.
"And leave you alone?" Wels asks. "Absolutely not." Mumbo smiles slightly, watching the number on the display climb until they reach their floor, accompanied by the same artificial voice of the receptionist. Wels steps out first, Mumbo following soon after.
Their suits click against the floors, white plastic beneath them. The walls are halftone between white and blue. It's not particularly appealing, but these offices rarely are. It was a lucky turn of events he ended up how he did. How boring his life would be if he actually made it into one of these.
"Is this the one?" Wels points to a closed door, one of very few on this floor. Mumbo checks the symbol on the side, nodding.
"Looks like it." Wels stands beside Mumbo, resting his hand near his sword.
"You ready to go in?" He asks. Mumbo quickly checks the time, sighing. It doesn't look like he can stall. This whole set-up has brought his anxiety back full force. He knows what he's doing, though. He's practised with the others, he knows not to devalue himself. He's going to be great.
"As I'll ever be." Wels lifts his shoulders, offering an incline of his head. Mumbo smiles back. He raises his hand to knock on the door, but it slides open before he can. Wels makes a quiet noise of surprise behind him. Mumbo shakes his head, stepping into the office.
It's emptier than he's used to. Two bookshelves against the walls, lined with books that look like they've never been read. There's a shutter blocking out the window, leaving the main light the bulb overhead. Towards the back of the room is the desk. It's empty. Mumbo looks to Wels, who's hovering inside the door.
"Do you think we're early?" Wels doesn't get the chance to reply. There's a loud bang from nearby. Mumbo spins in the direction of it just as his suit lets out a warning beep and the light flickers out. When he tries the display it won't turn on. Oh no. "Wels-"
He cuts himself off when he sees him fighting with his helmet, fingers missing the release latch. Mumbo drops his folder, rushing forward and batting Wels's fingers away so he can get to it himself. Wels fights him momentarily but settles when the helmet clicks and Mumbo can slide it off his head.
Fear isn't a stranger to Mumbo. He's certainly feeling it right now. But he's never seen it on Wels before. His eyes are wide until he scrunches them shut, his breath coming out in short puffs and his hair stuck to his forehead. He reaches his hand out and Mumbo offers his own to hold. His heartbeat picks up considerably as he glances around the room. The door has closed and Mumbo has no idea what this is.
"Wels?" He tries, when his breathing has calmed. "You with me?" Wels nods, taking a deep breath in and squeezing Mumbo's hand.
"Helmet stopped getting input." Mumbo winces, glad he didn't wear his.
"It's supposed to release when that happens-" He shakes his head "-I'll look into it. We've got worse problems." Wels blinks hard, standing straight and taking in the situation. His face is still red, but his composure has returned. He finally releases Mumbo's hand.
"The door's shut." Mumbo nods. He examines it, considering the model in his head. The keypad won't even activate when he tries it.
"This model is supposed to open when it loses power," he says, thinking out loud, "It's a safety feature."
"So someone's changed it on purpose."
"Appears so." Mumbo isn't going to think about those implications. "What even was that? Nothing's working." Wels's face is grim, trying to pry the shutters open.
"Localised EMP, I think. Probably only affected this floor."
"Well." Mumbo glares at the door, deciding to pry the keypad open. "This is just wonderful."
"Note to self." Wels ducks under the desk. "Trust our gut instinct." Mumbo makes a noise in response, sorting through the wires in the panel. He knows how these doors work but it doesn't seem to be getting any power. There's no amount of re-ordering wires that can change that. He tries his suit again but gets the same result. They need to get out of here and contact the others.
"Found anything?" He asks when Wels appears again.
Wels shakes his head, "Nothing. I was hoping for an escape latch or... Something." He makes a frustrated noise. "Somebody wants us trapped in here and I'm not going to let that happen."
"Well, I don't think there's any way I can open the door. Unless we can lever it." Wels looks it up and down.
"Right. Last resort." Wels pulls out his sword, launching it at the thin parting in the door. "Please don't break," he murmurs under his breath. In a sharp motion he angles his sword, managing to pry the door open by a crack. "Mumbo!" Mumbo squeezes his elbow in, pushing the door until the gap is wide enough for them both to fit through. Thankfully the only resistance is the weight, rather than any mechanism.
"I doubt the lift will be safe," Mumbo says, checking down the hallways. Wels has his sword by his side, holding it ready. He's left his helmet behind, same as Mumbo's files. An annoying loss, but he's not fighting the door again for them. "Did we pass stairs?"
"I think so." Wels leans on one foot to look down the corridor. "Are those signs?"
Both of their heads jolt in the direction of footsteps down the corridor. There's nowhere obvious to hide. Wels pushes Mumbo into the small alcove by the lift, standing in front of him with his sword to attention. Mumbo can't see his face but his shoulders are set in a tense line. Mumbo reaches for his gun, although he has a feeling it won't work. Neither of them breathe as the footsteps grow closer.
It's two men, dressed in dark clothing. Neither of them look in their direction, focused on the door they should be behind. There's no hint of movement before Wels launches. He butts one of the men on the head with the hilt of his sword, swinging as he drops to knock the gun from the other's hand. He follows it up with a strike against his head with the flat of the blade. Less deadly, but it leaves them incapacitated enough. Wels kicks their guns in Mumbo's direction.
"Anything work?" He asks, pushing the hair from his face back with a scowl. Mumbo scoops the weapons up. His own gun isn't working, so that's great. He plays with the other two, attempting to activate them. He only gets 'access denied' on a small screen.
"It's fingerprint locked. How absurd." He twists the gun to see the underside. "I could rewire it." Wels shakes his head.
"That would take too long," he says, "Our only advantage right now is that they don't know we're free. The blast will have knocked out the cameras on this floor." He nudges one of the grunts with his toe. "When these two don't report in or... Whatever, they'll realise."
"At least we know where the stairs are." Wels smiles, stepping over the grunt. He keeps his sword ready by his side, only slightly bloody.
"That's the spirit." Mumbo exaggerates his sigh and gets an amused puff in response. Wels gestures for him to continue with his hand, both of them making for the stairs.
"What's actually the plan here?" Mumbo asks as they reach the stairwell, thankfully open. Wels leans over the barrier to check below them. "Do we even have one?"
"Nope," Wels pops the 'p'. Well, nothing new there. "Stay behind me."
"Planning to."
He tries to tread lightly down the stairs, difficult with his suit. Wels nearly dances down them, feet ghosting over each step. He stops them both by holding a hand up. Mumbo only stumbles down one stair as he tries to stop. Wels turns, mouthing and pointing them both up around the bend. They press themselves around the stairwell, listening as a few people enter. Mumbo can see Wels relax when they go down away from them.
It's a tense wait for the voices to disappear, punctuated by another door sliding shut. The two wait for a few seconds more.
"This must still operate as an office building," Mumbo murmurs, keeping his voice low.
"It's a big building to rent out just for an elaborate trap." Wels continues down. "Is there usually a back door?" Mumbo hums, trying to think to his adolescence.
"There should be," he replies. Usually into an alleyway, for taking out the trash or something.
"Well, it's that or the front door." Wels checks ahead as they go down another twist. "Which would be a statement."
"They set an EMP off and tried to trap us in a room, Wels."
"A statement," Wels repeats, pausing to give Mumbo a cheeky smile. Mumbo shakes his head. It reminds him of the situation they're actually in. He has no idea what the motivation is for this. At least it's not Convex, he hopes. Variety is the spice of life or whatever. He trusts Wels when he says it was an EMP. There's something very wrong with this situation. Mumbo's a big fan of run first, ask questions later.
They encounter trouble as they reach the ground floor. Wels holds a hand out in front of Mumbo when they hear shouting, both of them stilling. Wels leans forward, listening carefully.
"Head up slightly," he murmurs, pushing Mumbo in the right direction. Mumbo hides around the corner, peering so he can just see Wels. He's pressed against the wall, his breathing measured. He's looking at the ground as the sounds come closer, voices and footsteps.
The door opens and Wels pounces. He kicks behind the knees of the first person, hitting his head with his sword. Without hesitation, he twists to the next, jabbing backwards and knocking them into the person behind. Mumbo is barely breathing, watching Wels's precise movements. Wels is quick to knock their weapons away, hair falling into his face.
A noise behind Mumbo startles him to his feet, raising his arms as he spots more grunts rushing down the stairs. He glances to Wels, finding he's mostly dispatched the ones by him.
"Wels, we need to go!" He calls, rushing down the stairs. Wels drops the last one with a jab to the spine, his shoulders rising with heavy breaths.
"Okay, that's a lot." He grabs Mumbo, narrowly pulling him out the way of a shot. His hand stays around his wrist until they're into the corridor, releasing him to sprint ahead. Mumbo gulps, breaking into a run. He can hear the crackle of electricity hitting the wall beside him, far too close for comfort.
He pauses when he hears a crack of electricity coming from up ahead, calling out a panicked, "Wels!" Wels stops, swerving to the side, but not fast enough to avoid the rope that flies out from a side door. It wraps around his torso, sparking with electricity and pinning his arms to his side. Wels falls with a pained shout. He lands hard on his arm, gasping out for breath. The sword falls too far from Mumbo's reach. He instinctively moves to help until his head kicks in, hearing the shouting around him.
"Hands up!" Mumbo looks at Wels on the ground, his chest heaving as the wire (he can now see that's what it is) crackles again. Wels shifts in place, letting out a weak cry at the pulse as his body tenses. Maybe it's a good thing his hair hides the pained expression Mumbo knows must be there. He raises his hands, allowing one of the grunts to grab his arms and pull them behind his back. Something solid and heavy is secured around his wrists. He almost loses his footing at a sharp tug, turning to see the bloody gash on the guy's head. Maybe Wels should have hit him harder.
A figure enters the corridor that Mumbo is more familiar with.
"Mr. Dukes-" he keeps his voice steady, masking the fear churning in his stomach "-This is an interesting meeting." Internally, he curses the guy out. He only has to take one look at Wels for his morals to disappear. But he knows they're at a disadvantage, and he knows that won't help anything.
"Mumbo," Dukes nods very slightly to acknowledge him before nudging Wels with a pointed toe. Wels groans, trying to curl up and Mumbo bristles. "This would've been much easier if you stayed put." Dukes waves at the grunts. "Take him to an office. I'll move them at nightfall, figure out what to do with the extra." There's a few affirmatives before Mumbo's being dragged away, battling every urge to break free or to call for Wels or something. It feels like he's failed somehow, but he doesn't fight. He doesn't know what to do.

Mumbo paces the room they left him in. He's tried everything he can get his restrained hands on, checked the walls, checked the door, the little furniture there is to check. He can't find a way out of here. In the tiniest crack at the base of the shutters, he can tell it's ticking into evening. They've got time. If they're moved to a second location they're absolutely boned.
There's no telling how long it'll take the others to realise something's gone wrong. First it'll be when they don't get an update after the meeting, but when did they expect the meeting to end? Then they'll send a message but how long until they worry about the lack of reply? A deep part of Mumbo is gnawing at him with the knowledge they might mobilise too late. The Hermits stop at nothing to protect their own, but they need to find them first. It's too easy to disappear.
With any luck, Dukes was only after Mumbo. Wels was extra, wasn't he? Turn him into the right governmental body for a quick profit, easy. Just as easy as it would be for the others to break him out. It's himself he's not sure about. He was the target of all this. For his designs, he's guessing. He slumps against the wall, watching the sunlight creeping under the shutter. He pushes away thoughts of what might happen to him. He's sure he'll find out soon enough.
The light outside gradually fades in colour. Mumbo paces the room several more times until it becomes a strong amber, travelling across the carpeted floor. If he stays still for too long he thinks his worry might consume him. He tries his suit a few times as a last ditch effort, knocking it against the wall. He can't even get annoyed at the work it'll take to fix it. He might not get the chance.
He's mid-pace when the door slides open. Two grunts grab his arms, holding him in place in the centre of the room. He scowls, trying to shift their grip. Dukes follows soon after them.
"It has," he replies, falling into the professional tone. "Do I get to know why we couldn't just have a peaceful, ordinary meeting?" Dukes strides forward, his hands clasped neatly behind him back. He's only an inch taller than Mumbo, but he makes him feel tiny.
"It's been some time, hasn't it, Mumbo?" Should've been longer, apparently. Being rejected for that internship destroyed him, back then. The constant comments, the reminders he'd never make anything of himself. All of it. He was so excited to finally prove himself and look at what that gets him.
"You have no idea how valuable you are, do you?"
Mumbo tilts his head side to side, "About ten million, actually, last time I checked." Dukes laughs.
"One of the smartest minds of a generation," Dukes says, "And still unsurprisingly foolish." Mumbo frowns. It's an effort not to reply. "See, I've been working on a project but I need more brains to push it further. It's nearly perfect and once finished, it could change the scene as we know it." Mumbo doesn't know it. He doesn't want to know it.
"That could've been done through negotiation," he replies, "I'm available to hire."
"I don't think I could pay you to work on this." Dukes holds something in front of him. A collar of some kind. There's sharp, thin spikes around the back, on the inside. Mumbo cringes at the sight. "This has been my brainchild for some time. This collar, combined with a remote, taps directly into the wearer's spinal cord. It can stop or send its own signals, allowing control of body parts the wearer can't use, better health management-"
"You want to use it to control people," Mumbo interrupts, the reality sinking in. He glares at Duke, hiding his terror as anger.
"Smart boy."
"You're right. I won't work on it." He edges back into the hands holding him. Dukes laughs again. The sound makes Mumbo feel dizzy.
"You wouldn't just be working on it," Dukes tells him, in the same tone someone would use to talk to a child. "You'd be one of the first test subjects." Mumbo's eyes widen. He pushes back, thrashing to loosen the grip on his arms.
"No- no, no, no-" He's completely broken and he knows it. No going back now. "Get away from me. Take that thing away. You're sick." Dukes stands there, ignoring Mumbo's panic. He opens an antiseptic cloth, running it over the metal points.
"I imagine it'll hurt going in," he explains like he's reading a book. "But we made sure it'll do as little damage as possible. It's getting it out that could mess things up a little."
"You can't do this. You won't get away with it."
"I think I already have-" Dukes steps forward, holding the collar up, "What will you do, call for help? Oh, wait-" A smile with too many teeth "-You won't be able to." Mumbo pushes himself back, drawing in as a last ditch effort to protect himself. He shuts his eyes and hears the crackle of electricity.
Then the hands around his arms release.
He tumbles to the floor, opening his eyes to see a suit he recognises stunning the second grunt. False turns to him, her expression hidden by her helmet.
"Mumbo-" It sounds as if a heavy weight is lifted when she says it. She drops to her knees, gently checking him over. "Are you okay, did he hurt you?"
Mumbo shakes his head, "No I'm... Alright. I'm okay." He's... It might take a minute to believe it. She sighs, resting her glove on his cheek.
"We were so worried. We just-" She shakes her head, standing and turning to the incapacitated people around her. "Let me sort this out first."
"No, please do." Safer than making the same mistake they did. She pulls out her sets of cuffs, securing the grunts first.
"We got a distress signal from Wels. Apparently it's set for if his suit fails. Then we couldn't find either of you- X went near ballistic," she explains as she works. Mumbo listens, her voice a grounding anchor. "We came as soon as we could."
"Who's here?" Mumbo asks. He knows they couldn't fit the entire ship.
"Iskall, Etho and I. Doc's on back up."
"Is Stress there?" False nods. "Wels might be injured. He seemed bad when he went down." She finishes checking the bindings, raising her arm.
"False reporting," she pauses for an unheard response, "I've got Mumbo. No injuries but he says Wels might be. Tell Stress to be prepared." Mumbo wishes he could hear the conversation, but False lowers her arm afterwards. She hesitates when she sees the collar, picking it up cautiously.
"What even is this?" She asks, helmet tilting to Mumbo. He shudders, drawing his legs closer to himself.
"It's a... controlling device. It accesses your spinal cord to send nerve signals. Lets you control someone." False looks at it for a long second, then to Mumbo.
"He was about to put this on you." She sounds breathless. Mumbo looks into his lap, can't find the words to reply. He might break down if he does. "I'm getting those cuffs off and getting you out. What are the authorities like here?" She leaves the collar to the side.
"They're not awful," Mumbo explains as she works on the restraints around his wrists, "But someone with money and influence like him... He'd probably find a way out of it." She makes a frustrated noise just as the restraints fall away. Mumbo's muscles ache in relief. He rubs at the soreness around his wrists.
"We'll see what we can do," she decides. She offers him a hand. He stumbles forward, kept upright by her firm grip. "Who is he? I'm assuming that's the leader." She dips her head in Dukes' direction. Mumbo sighs.
"Tristan Dukes. Everyone in the city knows him. Well-known for his innovation and inventions, donates regularly to charities. Most inspiring inventors want to work for him." Mumbo gives his wrist a last squeeze. "I tried going for an internship here. It didn't go well. Probably good I didn't get it, if this is what he's doing behind the scenes."
"If I wasn't afraid of waking him up then I'd kick him harder." Mumbo can't help an amused snort. His legs are still trembling.
"That's not very do-gooder of you, False." She laughs, bumping his side gently enough it doesn't knock him over.
"What X doesn't know can't hurt him." He breathes a little easier at her light tone. She reaches for her belt, placing a stun gun in his hands. "You ready to get out of here?" Mumbo glances to the door. He'd like to see Wels, get proof he's okay. But he'll only get in the way. The three of them are a well-oiled machine on missions like this.
"Absolutely." It's a cause for celebration when he steps out of that office prison on its own. "How did you guys get here?" It would be a bit obvious to have a crew in their full suits through the city.
False makes a high-pitched "Well." She shrugs, sounding not very sheepish. "We took one of the ships. Then we may've borrowed a few cars."
"Borrowed," Mumbo repeats. She holds her hands up.
"Hey, we fully plan on returning them this time!" Mumbo shakes his head, following behind her. She raises her arm. "False again-" Pause "-Yeah, I'm getting Mumbo out. Left three people in the office. Floor forty, office B. The one in the fancy clothes is the owner of the company, Tristan Dukes. I want a background check on him. Dig up all the dirt you can find. He's not going free." She hums, glancing at Mumbo. "Okay. Keep me updated."
"Who was that?" Mumbo asks. False starts moving towards the exit, giving her gun a quick check over.
"Ren," she replies. "He's doing comms from home. We should be all set." And isn't he glad to hear that?
Their escape goes better than his and Wels did. Any grunts on the staircase have already been dealt with, tied up in neat batches for the police to find. False still scopes out each corner, all business as they move through. It's the side door they leave through. The cool air in the alley nearly makes him sag in relief. The night is almost on them. She leads him through a network of alleys, head twitching towards any sounds she hears. The distant traffic is a quiet undertone. She approaches a parked car, knocking on the window of it.
The door swings open, Doc inviting Mumbo into the seat. Mumbo near collapses into it, shutting his eyes and leaning against the headrest.
"Mumbo," Doc greets. Mumbo cracks his eyes open, giving a tired smile. "It sure is good to see you."
"Yeah. Yeah, I could say the same." He's ready to sink into this seat forever. Doc rubs his shoulder and Mumbo allows himself to be pushed.
"What are you doing?" Doc looks to False, who's bouncing in place. Mumbo follows his gaze, listening along.
"I'm going to head back in," she tells him. "Can I trust you've got Mumbo?"
"Won't let him out of my sight." Mumbo rolls his eyes, slouching further into the seat.
"I am sitting right here." False laughs, patting his head.
"I'll keep in touch. Stay safe."
Doc nods, "You too." She offers a quick nod, closing the door and darting back into the alleys. Doc turns to Mumbo. He's smiling, but Mumbo can tell concern when he sees it. "How are you doing, man?" Mumbo sighs.
"Exhausted," he admits. "I don't think I've processed it properly at all."
"Understandable," Doc replies. "What even happened in there?" Mumbo groans, rearranging himself to rest against Doc's side. The suits aren't comfortable, but it helps to know someone is behind him after being alone in that room. He sticks his feet on the seat so his legs shield him from the door.
"Meeting could've gone better." Doc laughs deeply at that one, careful not to knock Mumbo off.
"Well, that's one way to put it." Mumbo smiles to himself, resting his eyes.
"Got into the office, EMP went off, broke out the room, nearly got out but got caught, rescued by False." He isn't going to mention the collar, or his history with Dukes. He'll save reliving that for the official report. "Think that covers it."
"Yikes."
"Yep."
"Guess it's not just Cub and Scar we gotta worry about, huh." Mumbo presses his hands to his face with a noise of displeasure.
"I don't even want to think about that. I do not want this to be a reoccurring nightmare." Doc chuckles, patting Mumbo's shoulder carefully.
"You'll be fine. Hopefully, it'll all be sorted after this. And you've got us. We're pretty terrifying." It takes a bit of effort, but Mumbo leans his head back far enough to see Doc's eyes.
"You know what, I'm holding you to that." He yawns, the energy that's been keeping him going has drained. He can tell he's crashing. "Protect me from businessmen with delusions of grandeur."
"Oh, of course." Doc's voice is dry. "I'll let Iskall know." Mumbo chuckles, shaking his head. He closes his eyes again, accepting he might not stay awake much longer.
"Big scary Iskall."
"He was big and scary when he found out you were in trouble."
"That's Iskall," he agrees. It's nice knowing that they all care about him. He wouldn't be forgotten. They'd keep looking until they found him.
He doesn't realise he's dozed off until he's being gently moved. He blinks his eyes open and realises he's now lying across the seats. Looking up, he finds Doc resting his hand on Mumbo's side. He's talking to someone out of eye-line. Mumbo relaxes. If Doc's there, then he's fine. He has no doubt in his mind about that at all.
The next time he wakes up, it's because he's being nudged awake. Doc is next to him, with a gentle smile.
"Hey, sleepyhead," he greets, sitting back so Mumbo can sit upright. He yawns, covering his hand with his mouth. "We're back at the ships. Got some stuff to finish up before we go back home."
"Is it finished?" Mumbo asks, rubbing his eyes. When he looks out the window, he recognises the hangar parking.
"Yep." Doc crosses his arms, leaning back in his seat. "There was an incident-"
"Is Wels okay?" Mumbo interjects, fear twisting his stomach. Doc's expression softens as he nods.
"Wels is fine. Fractured his arm and a little bruised, but Stress has got him. He was asleep last I heard." Mumbo sighs, his chest finally expanding again. He sinks back into the seat. He has no idea how they've made it out of this situation as lucky as they have. "You wanna head into the ship? Let one of the others return this car." Mumbo nods. Would be nice to avoid running into the law after all this.
When he gets closer to the ship, he can hear shouting. He frowns, pressing closer to Doc. Doc simply rolls his eyes.
"They're still going," he murmurs.
"Still?"
Doc shakes his head, "Don't worry about it."
He leans over to open the ship door. The arguing silences immediately. False and Iskall turn to them as they enter. They're helmet-less, although False's hair is still in a bun at the bottom of her head.
"Mumbo!" Iskall moves before Mumbo can react, nearly knocking them over as he wraps his arms around him. Mumbo's brain momentarily malfunctions, taking a second to remember to hug Iskall back. "I was so worried, don't you dare do that again."
"I wasn't planning to, but I'll let you know." Iskall steps back, keeping his hands on Mumbo's forearms.
"And you're okay? How are you feeling?"
"I'm-" The lie nearly slips out before Mumbo thinks about it. He sighs, answering truthfully. "I'm a bit shaken. Finding it hard to believe that all happened, honestly."
"We've got you, okay?" Iskall reminds him. "I'll listen if you want to talk." Mumbo nods. He's not sure when that will be, but he knows it'll do him good.
"Will Xisuma want a proper report?"
"Not until you and Wels are rested up," False says, "He's pleased you're safe." She nods to Doc. "We're going to take the car back."
"Make sure you check in," Iskall tells them.
"We will," Doc reassures, offering a wave as they head outside. The ship feels much emptier with the two of them gone.
"Do you want to see Wels?" Iskall asks. Mumbo didn't realise how much he wanted that until now.
"Yes. Yes, I'd very much like that." Iskall smiles, leading Mumbo through the ship. It's bigger than the one he and Wels took. Offers more than three rooms. Iskall takes them into one of the side doors. Mumbo can immediately see the pink of Stress's suit as she moves around the room, humming a tune to herself. She pauses when she sees them in the doorway.
"Oh! Mumbo, you're back!" She smiles. Mumbo spots Etho curled in a chair on his phone. He raises a hand to acknowledge them. "You're not secretly hiding any injuries are you?"
Mumbo laughs, shaking his head, "No, I promise I'm okay. No injuries on me." She pokes her finger into her cheek.
"And you wouldn't mind me checking?"
"Um, if you want to."
She beams at him, "Nah, you're fine!" Iskall scoffs, gesturing out.
"How come that doesn't work for me? This is bias. Surely that's against oath."
"Iskall, love," Stress starts, her voice dangerously sweet, "Your idea of a minor injury is a stab wound. You've lost trust privileges." Iskall makes a noise of protest whilst Mumbo breaks into laughter. He can see Etho smiling out the corner of his eye.
There's a groan from the bed, then a teasing voice, "Who let you lot in?" Wels pushes himself up with one arm. The bulk of his suit is gone, only the black under-layer left. His other arm is bound by tight fabric to his chest. More interestingly, his hair has been neatly plaited out of his face.
"You shouldn't be moving, mister!" Stress scolds, jumping to move the pillows so he can sit up. "No jostling that arm."
"Yes ma'am," Wels replies. He laughs when Stress flicks his cheek, batting her away with his uninjured arm. Mumbo feels like he can finally breathe properly for the first time since all of this started. Wels looks at him, his expression soft. "Good to see you, Mumbo." His voice turns serious when he asks, "You're okay?"
"I'm fine. Virtually untouched." He holds his arms out before remembering he's still wearing his full suit. "Don't know if I can say the same for you." Wels laughs, sinking into the pillows.
"It's only a broken arm."
"Only," Iskall teases, "Like you're not going to complain when you still can't use it in a week."
Wels hums, "Well, Stress gave me painkillers, so I'm not exactly hurting right now." Stress waves her hands.
"All of you have complexes, I swear! You're gonna gain nothing by sitting there all miserable and sore!" She sounds genuinely exasperated. Mumbo is guilty of falling into that category.
"Admit it, you just like seeing us all loopy." Iskall tilts his head towards her. Stress flashes a smirk, resting her cheek in her palm.
"You can't prove it."
"That's admittance." Etho chimes in, keeping his eyes on his phone, fingers moving impossibly fast.
"I- I don't think that's how you use that word." Iskall frowns, his face scrunching in confusion.
"They're all made up anyway," Etho replies, "I'll use them how I want."
"Stress?" Wels asks, turning to her. His voice is perfectly polite.
"Yes?"
"Can I have more painkillers for the headache they're giving me?" Mumbo barely holds back his laughter. Iskall doesn't, doubling over with it. It only gets stronger when Etho makes a noise, looking disappointed at his phone.
"Yeah, I think you're going to be okay." Iskall pats the bed by Wels's feet. Stress finally sighs, standing fully and shepherding the two in.
"If you're going to clutter the room up then get some chairs. We can have a sleepover." Mumbo smiles, getting pushed into the chair Iskall slides under him.
"Woohoo," Iskall cheers dryly.
"Does that mean I get ice cream?" Wels asks, "I think I deserve ice cream."
"You need more sleep, is what you need." At Wels's dramatic noise she adds, "Ice cream when you wake up."
Iskall sticks his hand up, "Do the rest of us get some?"
"I want ice cream," Etho adds. Stress breathes in slowly, closing her eyes.
"You lot are gonna be the end of me," she announces with a smile. "Go to sleep." Mumbo laughs. Despite his impromptu nap, he can already feel tiredness settling in again. Surrounded by everyone teasing each other, it's not hard to drift off. Nothing's going to get him here.

"He was going to put that collar on him," False explains. Her arms are folded, back straight. The hologram of Xisuma frowns, a surprising display of emotion during a debrief. "If I'd been literally seconds later, X, I don't know what we'd be dealing with."
"And he's doing okay?" Xisuma asks, concern in his voice.
"He's dozing with Wels," Iskall replies. "He said it hasn't set in yet. I've told him I'll be there if he wants to talk about it. Stress and Doc are with them."
"Okay. And Wels?" The two glance at Etho.
"He wasn't great when I found him," Etho explains, his mission voice in full force. "We think he's broken his arm and he was giving me static shocks, so probably electrocuted. Won't know more unless they open up, but they seemed in good spirits earlier." Iskall nods in agreement. It's concerning him how quickly they've both settled. As if nothing traumatic happened. That's the most insidious kind. The one that punches you later.
"What about the people responsible?" All three of them share glances at that. False swallows.
"We secured most of the grunts. The authorities have picked them up." She made sure of it herself.
"But?" Xisuma prompts.
"The main guy, Dukes or whatever, completely vanished." Bitterness is still heavy in Iskall's tone. False sighs.
"I left him in the room, out cold, whilst I got Mumbo out of there. He was gone by the time I got back and so was the collar."
"None of us saw him leave," Etho adds.
"This is... More concerning. So that device is still out there."
"It won't be easy for him to build himself back up after this," False explains, "Most of the papers are already linking it to his company."
"That's no guarantee," Etho points out. "There's ways to place blame, claim he had no idea."
"Or he'll use it to go even deeper," Iskall comments. Xisuma taps his fingers on his arm, the hologram flickering as he thinks.
"Have you told Mumbo or Wels about this?" He asks, finally. He always puts his crew first.
"We've... No," Iskall admits.
"We're not sure how to."
"Make sure you do," Xisuma tells them, "Before you get back tomorrow." He pauses, looking over the camera. "Well, today now. Consider yourselves dismissed. We can have a full debrief when you're back on the ship." The three nod. They exchange a brief farewell before the hologram shuts off. Iskall turns to False, resting his hand on her arm to stop her rushing off.
"I'm sorry for shouting earlier," he apologises, straight to the point. "This has stressed me out more than I'd like, and finding out that scum got away just-" He breaks off. False smiles.
"It's okay. I get it." She couldn't believe it when she got back and he was gone. Then nobody knew where and her blame had to fall somewhere. "But they're with us, now. We're all safe. We got there in time."
"We nearly didn't."
"But we did," Etho states, joining the conversation. "Don't get stuck on the ifs right now. They're going to need us."
Iskall nods. "Right. Yeah." He perks himself up. "After mission nap?" False shakes her head, the three heading back through the ship.
"It's past midnight," she reminds him.
"After mission bedtime," Etho suggests. Iskall laughs, but nods along.
"Things could've gone worse," he states. False claps lightly, aware of the possible sleeping hermits.
"There you go! That's more like it."
"Mission successful-ish," Etho agrees.
"We got them back," False says, "That's the main thing."
"Yeah."
None of them want to consider the alternative.

a stormy night on the server ends with the architechs having a sleepover at sahara.
hermitcraft s6. non-au.
architechs (grian, mumbo, iskall) and a brief appearance from xisuma.

i wrote this as purely platonic and am personally uncomfortable with shipping the hermits, but feel free to interpret my works as you wish. feedback is much appreciated!
it wasn't rare that the three architechs worked on sahara- it was true that they liked to keep things pretty, working, and stocked (even if they struggled a bit with the last part sometimes).
iskall and mumbo had been working on the redstone late one night when grian came flying in, drenched and with a puddle of water forming rapidly at his feet.
"hey, hey! stay away from the redstone. we don't need it getting messed up," iskall warned, looking up from his work. he waited for grian to take a few steps back before he continued, "what, did you fall in the water while building or something?"
mumbo poked his head out from around one of the rows of redstone and whistled. "you might wanna dry off before you get sick."
grian merely shrugged helplessly. "i was out there building and it started pouring! i came back in as quick as i could but i still got soaked."
"ah, i'm sure it's not that bad," mumbo spoke, mid-yawn, as he tucked away the unused redstone supplies he'd been working with. "and on that note, i think i'll be calling it a night. we've been working for ages."
iskall stood and brushed himself off lamely, hopping out from behind the wall where the redstone was hidden and into the main room. mumbo followed and grian pulled up the rear, blocking the gap back up.
the builder grabbed iskall's arm, giggling softly and pointing at mumbo.
"mumbo, wait-" iskall tried, only to be waved off by mumbo.
without paying attention, his fellow redstoner walked right out into the downpour- then shrieked as he was soaked through in seconds. mumbo darted back inside and glared accusingly at grian and iskall, who were laughing very blatantly at him.
"mumbo, you absolute spoon! i tried to warn you, and grian even said it was pouring- he even came in, drenched from head to toe!" iskall teased when he and grian finally stopped laughing.
"yeah, well-" mumbo started uselessly, then sighed and gave up.
with another short laugh and a glance at both of his soaked friends, iskall shook his head. "come on, let's get you two dried off before you get sick, and then i get sick."
their communicators pinged in sync- a message popped up. "xisuma hit the ground too hard," grian read out, snickering. a second and a third ping followed. "it's from ecks-eye-sooma. says 'there's a nasty storm out right now. i think something's off with the server. increased lightening and rain, you can hardly see a thing.' then 'wouldn't recommend going anywhere until it clears up.'"
"i guess we're spending the night at sahara," mumbo exhaled, resigned to his fate.
"sleepover!" grian shouted, racing ahead and up to the meeting room.
when they arrived, iskall was quick to find something to dry the two of them off. grian was whispering conspiratorially to his parrots while mumbo dried himself off in his chair at the table. he only moved once he was done, using his hands to dry off grian's hair with the towel iskall had thrown over the builder's head.
grian took the initiative from there, drying himself off as best he could. he let one of the parrots settle on the top of his head before joining iskall and mumbo at the table.
there was silence, for a moment, then- "you guys know what we have to do, right?"
grian didn't seem to want to wait for an answer, just continued fluidly. "we need to make a blanket fort. it's not a good sleepover unless there's a fort."
iskall stood up. "sounds like fun. i'm in," he announced, already sharing a grin with grian.
mumbo looked between them, then rose to his feet. "alright, i'm in too."
grian and iskall cheered and immediately got to work on plans, sending mumbo off to gather blankets and pillows while they planned.
when he returned, arms piled high with the requested items, the two seemed to have decided on a design and the construction began. they mostly used their chairs as supports for the fort, adding an occasional block pillar to stabilize it and make it large enough for all three of them to stay in comfortably. it ended up being rather large and spacious, all things considered, and even mumbo seemed in a significantly better mood after stepping out into the downpour.
"we can't just go to sleep," iskall insisted as they all lay in the finished masterpiece, "there's totally other sleepover activities we have to do first."
the three all clambered out of the fort and looked at each other.
after a moment, grian grinned wide and rushed over to his parrots. he popped a music disc in the jukebox and an upbeat tune started playing- the parrots started dancing and grian joined them. he swayed and moved his arms and iskall and mumbo laughed as he grinned back at them.
"come on! you have to dance with us." the builder insisted, rushing over to grab their arms and drag them closer.
iskall laughed and joined in without much protest, even going so far as to spin grian around while they laughed.
"mumbo! join us!" iskall spoke up, dragging mumbo into the fray. his gangly limbs made for a funny sight as he scrambled to figure out how to dance with them.
the dancing devolved further from there and ended with iskall lifting grian in the air like a ballerina, then grian and iskall trying to dip mumbo despite the height differences.
at that point, they collapsed onto the floor in a heap of giggles and teasing. one of the parrots had the courtesy to pop the disc out of the jukebox for them.
they took a moment, but eventually the three architechs stumbled to their feet and into the fort they'd labored over. grian dropped to the floor like a stone, the overdramatic little shit that he was, dragging mumbo down with him. iskall had a much nicer landing, sitting himself down before scooting down to lay against the pillows they'd set up.
they fell into comfortable, sleepy silence soon enough- grian's body draped halfway over mumbo's shoulder and chest and iskall's head pillowed on grian's back.
grian yawned, then mumbled out a soft, "goodnight guys."
iskall hummed sleepily and ruffled grian's hair. "night grian. night mumbo."
mumbo's smile was soft as he peered down at his friends and partners in business. they'd fallen asleep almost immediately after mumbling their goodnights. he huffed out a soft, short laugh and tipped his head back into the pillows.
"goodnight you two."
