Rant Time: Topic Marvel Comics and Diversity

First and foremost I want to say that this is MY OPINION (screaming white woman gif here). I am also aware that Marvel’s main goal is to make a profit in order to thrive and continue its business. That being said I want to vent about something that has perplexed and annoyed me to no end. Why must diversity in comics (or anything for that matter) be so difficult to do correctly and also acknowledge? Why must it also be such a huge issue in the comic-book community? Trust me I already know the answers to these questions and if I wanted to just stop typing now and call it racism I could. But I want to really think about this for a minute. Other than the fact that comic book readers who have enjoyed stories that catered to them since the Golden Age of comics, can no longer relate to current stories, thus whining and protesting. I genuinely feel our society has straight-up vilified people who have been begging for representation for decades.

I mean it has become a popular thing to mock, harass, and attack people for being “Social Justice Warriors”. Like why in the hell is it a punishable crime to want to read stories I can relate to? Why is it an issue that a character who so happens to be nothing like the same tired ass characters old white men have been writing since the 40s? Now look I respect a lot of things about the comics and writings before my time. I also acknowledge the fact that those comics really did not give a fuck about minorities and marginalized persons. I mean the most representation black people got in comics for the longest time were characters who just so happened to have BLACK in their superhero names and also some sort of electricity powers/animalistic characteristics. Now oddly enough some of my favorite superheroes and characters come from very ugly stereotypes but I love those characters despite that.

What I find interesting today is that Marvel and other businesses market “Diversity”, “Social Justice”, and other hot topics in order to see if they can reach a different demographic that they have worked against in the past. I feel like this tactic is way more harmful than it is progressive at times because it doesn’t allow for the stories and characters to happen naturally. If you look at a character like America Chavez (aka Miss America), you will see she is constantly being dragged by certain kinds of comic book readers for being a token “Gay and Brown” character. And yes, I literally saw someone write that about her on social media. I like America Chavez a lot as a character and I will admit that a chunk of the reason why is because she is “Gay and Brown”. There isn’t anything wrong with that. The issue is that whenever a character is outside the norm (white cis and straight) its almost as if they are forced to be this neon sign “HEY IM NOT WHITE CIS OR STRAIGHT”. The reason why I feel they come off that way is that people take too long to accept the fact that not every great story has to come from the same point of view over and over again.

People have also argued that they wouldn’t have an issue with these characters if they weren’t being reminded that these characters are minorities. I strongly believe that is a gotdamn lie, it is the fact that these characters no longer exist as background and supporting characters. They aren’t just the friend, the villain, or the character development tool for Captain American, Superman, Batman, or Spiderman. I find it hilarious that when it comes to cis-hetero people they claim all queer people do is talk about being queer. When in actuality they're the ones who can't even wear a color that clashes with their gender marker..... ANYWAYS, I feel like if you're uncomfortable reading a story because someone mentions their sexuality, race, disability, or weight, the issue isn’t the story it's you.

Don’t get me wrong there are absolutely stories that are trash and so happen to have a minority as the focus but people just love to blame the fact that it's because of diversity. Sometimes people suck at telling stories. But do I feel that Marvel and other companies are trying to create a profit off of the same people they didn’t acknowledge or give a fuck about for decades? Yes. Is it fucked up that any story that so happens to have someone who is a person of color, queer, has a mental/physical impairment, or is just fat always written off as an SJW diversity think piece? Yes. Will a lack of support for these new stories because people are just stuck in their ways and a decrease in profit more than likely end up with the same wack ass stories from the past? Yup.

Anyways I just wish that people would stop creating this narrative that everyone needs to be pissed off at minorities and marginalized groups for wanting to finally read stories about them. Marvel is a business and clearly, how they tried to do things hasn’t pleased a lot of people. But I remember the same old stale ass comic book readers, who now are complaining about too much change once complained about being tired of reading the same predictable stories they've read since the Golden Age of comics.

(yea my grammar is garbage and I sound mad, that's because both of those things are true so eat my ass.)
