people actually went on about how game of thrones made it socially acceptable to be a fantasy nerd, as though the lord of the rings movies hadn't been released less than a decade earlier and left far greater cultural ripples and i am just
got may have made the adults feel better about liking fantasy, but lotr got into the kids' heads when they (we) were just young and impressionable enough to be absolutely transported and emotionally rewritten by don't you leave him, samwise gamgee and my brother, my captain, my king and and rohan will answer
lotr was rewriting entire generations' brain chemistry long before asoiaf and so obviously it's not fair to compare any post-lotr fantasy novel to it, and each book series was trying to do different things within their own spheres and so that also is not a fair comparison, but in terms of the cultural impact of the adaptations that came out within a decade of each other, saying that it was game of thrones that made fantasy mainstream is baffling

#lotr#lord of the rings#lord of the rings movies#i started this post because ''may it be'' came up on my playlist but now i think i'm going to start my nth rewatch of the trilogy#there is a lot to discuss about it re: comparison to the books but it's like...#for all the changes they made - good and bad and neutral - everyone involved in making the films *loved* the source material#they all *wanted* to do justice to it and believed in it and it shows#i think of some posts i've seen about how frustrating this modern push towards tongue-in-cheek irony over sincerity#so afraid to be corny or cheesy that you have to tack a joke onto every real emotional moment#like no fuck that#give me sam hauling frodo onto his shoulders saying ''i can't carry it for you but i can carry you''#give me aragorn gently kissing boromir's forehead as he dies#give me merry and pippin throwing themselves at the uruk hai to distract them from frodo#give me theoden's grand speeches and gandalf's pained expression when frodo says he'll carry the ring#tbh i think that sincerity is a large part of *why* it has such staying power even now#because it is a story you are meant to get deeply emotionally invested in and not hold yourself a little ironically apart from#it isn't meant to sell merch it's meant to bring you to middle-earth and capture your heart and make you believe that the war can be won#with love and loyalty and hope and fellowship and fidelity and integrity and just... just refusing to give in to despair#it is earnest. it is unafraid to be melodramatic or corny because it believes in the story it's telling.#and so it imprinted onto a whole generation growing up right at the cusp of a barrage of apocalypses#anyway. i have Feelings about these movies and their impact and how that mirrors and enhances the books' own impact

so i’m watching youtube vids of Destiel and those ‘out of context’ vids and TELL ME WHY i don’t remember half of these scenes because oh my God this is so OMG like so fucking it’s a fucking fever dream like I don’t know what to tell you after season 7?! ive rewatched house so many times over this years and this moment ALWAYS gets me. 3 seasons in and cameron's finally standing up for something instead of trying to walk a middle path where she cant be blamed for making the wrong decision by making no decision, and it's one this heavy, and this is finally what gets house to express admiration for her, and it doesnt make it feel good or better but she's never the same from this moment. she knows she can act. she trusts herself more.
and she had to kill a man to do it.

#so dark out here#umm dead boy detectives review here we go! first two episodes were definitely the worst of the series. both are kinda weirdly paced and#the exposition is done poorly in places. overall from episode 3 onwards it gets much much better with pacing and show dont tell#do not understand for the life of me why they made crystal palace american#kassius nelson (<- crystals actress) was very good in places and kinda ehhh in others and im 90% the issue for most of the latter moments#was just that her american accent is not great. sorry they did that to you queen#dialogue was a bit dodge sometimes as well#stuff i liked now! the plot felt quite solid and i really enjoyed the monster of the week approach i think thats the perfect way to#do a dbd adaptation. was a bit annoyed they immediately went to america but port townsend was an interesting setting and all the#supernatural elements/characters fit in nicely#major props cos i feel like the show mostly pulled off the emotionally charged moments without getting corny and the dialogue was generally#good in those moments#particularly charles/crystals heart to heart in ep. 3 and like the entirety of episode 7 (<- ep 7 was brilliant)#overall very fun watch and i feel that the more irritating typical YA show garb was at least a bit offset by them being willing to get#quite dark in places#bit sad people are mostly posting about edwin becos charles was my favourite. has been entertaining watching americans scramble around#the cultural differences in the show#shaking my inbox like a maraca. if anyone wants to talk at me abt the show i will love you forever#.log

Late Night with the Devil feels like a V/H/S segment that escaped captivity
#dumb stuff#horror movies#late night with the devil#yes i saw it. it was at a cult movie showing so i felt a little better knowing i was at least giving money to the theater#they do a bunch of cool special events and show movies that are hard to see#also they have booze 😎👍#still stewing on this. take the v/h/s comment however you like#i love the v/h/s movies but they usually get reeeally weird or nasty or both and that's why i like them#lnwtd gets surreal and weird by the end but the costuming and effects kind of make it feel corny#and you think with a concept like this that the gore would be crazy too. not really? there's a face melt but it's hard to see and kinda bad#also it just. stops. it starts with a documentary introduction but drops it immediately - no follow-up whatsoever#at least Dastmalchian was great. put him in more horror movies (and anything honestly) immediately

extraordinary attorney woo is so important to me because to me the show is one huge shout of affirmation that woo young woo is loved. by herself, by her friends, by her work colleagues, by her dad, by her boyfriend, by the writers of the show, by the actor who plays her, by the audience. she’s loved. not in spite of her autism, not because of it - she’s autistic and she’s loved. sometimes imperfectly, sometimes ignorantly, but she’s loved loved loved like the human being she is.
