I AM A CHANGED WOMAN. OH MY G-D. I can't think coherently. But here are my thoughts on Sweeney Todd (3/30/24 matinee)
Act I
- I almost jumped out of my skin when they said “swing your razor high, Sweeney,” in Ballad of Sweeney Todd, like if that was possible I would have done it lol; the ensemble was so scary, there was a bright white light change, and the music got super loud, it was awesome
- Seeing Joe Locke in that opening number, something about him made me realize “oh he's gonna be great,” like his really intense pained vibes, his Toby really wears his heart on his sleeve
- WHEN AARON JUMPED OUT WITH THE SPOTLIGHT ON HIM!!!!!!!!!!!! I think my soul left my body (& it's still in the theater)
- Aaron’s weird cockney accent that he clearly has so much pride in, like King you could've just done a normal voice but no, he chose to do his own strange thing and it was giving Prince James One Royal Holiday (his Hallmark movie, iykyk) tbh
- When Mrs. Lovett threw flour across the stage at Sweeney to get his attention in Worst Pies
- The shadow/silhouette projections going through the story in Poor Thing, they were so tantalizing they actually managed to distract me from Aaron lol
- AARON’S MY FRIENDS WAS LIKE HEARING AN ANGEL SING FR
- It really didn't seem like he snapped when he said “my right arm is complete,” it seemed like he was a depressed man who finally found passion and drive again, not someone who was going crazy
- Maria was IMMACULATE as Johanna, the most gorgeous voice and acting…her halting, jerky movements really showed how damaged Johanna is, yet she still had this grace about her underneath, true beauty that couldn't be stamped out of her, even with all she endures
- Joe Locke was so light on his feet in Miracle Elixir (also he seemed to be having a great time, which goes for everyone during the whole show honestly)
- The lights changed color with each line of the song, like there was orange, white, then blue
- Aaron leaned over when he was standing by his little razor table and Sutton’s Mrs. Lovett ate that shit up, she crouched down to check out his butt for a solid twenty seconds
- When the Judge came into the shop Aaron had this huge grin on his face, he was so excited to kill him and he just spent too long relishing the moment
- Epiphany was a full-body experience I swear
- When Mrs. Lovett stared at his package in A Little Priest
- And then Aaron laughed when he pointed down at her cupped hands and said “what's that,” you could tell it was a genuine laugh from Aaron and not a Sweeney thing
- Aaron’s buttery voice when he sang “the history of the world, my pet”
- And he did a little growl too (don't look at me. DON'T)
Act II
- his voice was SO well-suited for Johanna Act II
- SUTTON FOSTER’S FEET IN BY THE SEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was hoping SO HARD that she would do that, and she did and it did not disappoint; Miss Foster how does it feel to be living out my dreams, thank you queen for letting me see that and live vicariously through you <33333333333
- she struck a pose like she was taking photos for Playboy when she said “me in stripes”
- “Not While I’m Around” was emotional af, Joe Locke did not have to go that hard but he fucking did
- For some reason I was the only one who clapped when Johanna shot Fogg? Is that not an applause-worthy moment??
- He was so giddy when he finally killed the Judge
- Aaron actually scared me when he was gonna kill Johanna, and esp when he chased down the stairs after her like a hulking monster
- the scariest thing was that even as things unraveled, he didn't seem to be “losing it”; he seemed to be getting even more intent on his revenge, stronger, more deft and precise, more confident, more powerful in his evilness
- he was scary af when they were looking for Toby too, so menacing
- his growl when he said “you lied to me”
- how he crawled towards Mrs. Lovett like an animal and scrabbled at the floor to grab her
- How loud the fire roared when he put Mrs. Lovett inside
- his body language (hunched shoulders, limp limbs/posture) seemed maybe almost remorseful once he threw her in the fire? Like as if he was thinking I'm glad I did that, I had to, but I'm exhausted and can't exactly process that she’s actually gone because of me
- The way Johanna held Anthony close when she saw the bodies
- Aaron’s acting when Toby killed Sweeney—he didn't fight him off, he just looked so sad and tired, like he wanted to be dead (what a wonderful interpretation of the lyric “she was his reason and his life”)
- UGH when Sweeney and Lovett hold hands and step into the pit, finally weightless, they’ve got each other, Sutton and Aaron are right, it IS a love story, oh my g-d my heart
I don't know if I'll ever be able to stop thinking about this. It was SO GOOD!!!!! Anyway thanks for reading my rambles if you got this far hahaha, hope you have a lovely day

In Hanging Out what were some of the character's childhood like, and what did they do for fun, specifically Sonic's orphan childhood.
Oh man, that's a tricky question, because my logic is taking what canon establishes and moving mostly just forward in a different direction. Commenting on their childhoods feels weirdly wrong? If only because there's so many different angles I could take.
Sonic in particular feels "wrong" to get details for, but I like to think he actually was kind of bratty? And had a habit of being a bit of a vandal for fun, and playing "extreme soccer" with random objects, kicking them far and "catching" them like a mile away. But he hashis heart in the right place and got enough experience of breaking things and causing problems early on that he eventually shaped up into the hero we know now.
All the others after the cut!
Amy was likely a very... stand-alone child who was stuck with taking care of herself. She likely researched "spells" and forms of magic for fun, though she never likely found the best uses for it beyond summoning magic. I considered a plot point of her mom being an enigmatic figure who researched Little Planet, and that lead to Amy wanting to get into tarot, but I never got very far. I think she had minimal supervision and got a small amount of wealth from an inheritance and just made-do with that. Despite that, she still stuck with being kind and doing her best to support others.
Tails likely didn't do much in particular for fun besides tinkering. He got bullied for his tails, etc etc, all kinda predictable there.
Shadow... fanon kinda came clutch and already outlined enough details there. Raised by Maria and Gerald, probably did cute slice of life stuff on the ARK at first before everything went to shit. For fun, he probably liked board games in particular. Maybe pong.
Tikal beat the shit out of people for fun, but in a friendly sparring way. In her eyes as a child, fighting should be purely recreational, and conflict should be settled with words. Naturally some aspects of that perspective got warped with time.
Mike is an interesting one. He basically got a crude simulation copy-paste of Sonic's childhood, but instead of being an orphan, he "grew up" with Eggman, who instilled a lot of obedience training. Which evidently backfired pretty hard for Hangin Out to be as it is. He likely played games like chess with Eggman for "'fun"", but he actually just prefers flying, since it's the one thing the original Sonic could never do.
Buddy was a government experiment who was actually similar to Shadow and Metal in terms of how he was "raised", so he never really got to "have fun" with any activity. Eventually as an adult though, he pursued his main hobbies, sound engineering and headphone/music reviewing. He runs a channel like a bizarro version of dankpods, where all of his humor is extremely dry and he goes into great technical detail about whatever he comes across.
Zero had the most fucked up upbringing, and likely fucking. Played knife games with drug lords for fun. That's the kind of messiness we're dealing with. He did not have a good life.
Sandy didn't get to really have a "Childhood" but her early years of operation involved snooping around different locations for archaeology and intel. From there she developed a love for music, often DJing for fun in secret.
Jeff is kind of. In his formative years, already? And we already know his deal. He plays minecraft and Civ and SimCity for fun.
Rouge stole shit for fun.
OH and CHASEY how could i forget?? Chasey is a mess lol. Chasey, um. ate food as a chao? and then enjoyed. Playing dress up with Cream. Also enjoyed dancing as a young blob.

Sonic Movie 1 Rewatch Live Reaction

Gonna watch the first Sonic movie and post aaallllll my reactions below
Below a read more because I don’t hate my followers
Okay so first off I love these movies I love Sonic but the fact that Tom is a cop fucking SUCKS his plotline in the movie sucks because it is about him being a cop and it is not nuanced and I doubt they will handle it well in the third movie. I’m not going to be covering the issues with it too in depth because a) white person here and b) gotta be honest I don’t know a lot about cop depictions in media. I’m mostly just going to be repeating what everyone else has already said, there are better sources than me when it comes to covering the issuesTM.

Nico Hcs bc I have wayyyy too many
He likes fruit snacks. Not bc hes gay or anything he just likes fruit snacks. That’s it.
He can play violin like his mother, Maria. He also learned the acoustic guitar at camp (Will likes to suggest the Star Wars theme track for him to play and Nico rarely does so for him). He also can play piano bc I think it goes with the whole “I grew up in the 30s/40s” thing.
The lord of darkness, controller of shadows, the ghost king is so ticklish. Him and Bianca used to have tickle fights and when Will tickles him he feels melancholy and happy at the same time.
This hc is very popular, he can sing beautifully. But it doesn’t end there, he can only sing good in the shower and he sounds decent at the camp fire but since hes 15 going thru puberty, theres lots of voicecracks.
As much as everyone loves the hc that Bianca would accept him for being gay if he could still visit her, I disagree. They grew up in the 30s/40s and you all saw how Nico was closeted for 4 years before being outed. He obviously grew up in a place where it was heavily discriminated against and that included his home so I think Bianca would be hesitant/taken aback at first but after some time, she eventually accepts it (I like to think this because of how she saw Achilles and Patroclus interact in Elysium and started to reconsider her homophobic acts).
After Will introduces him to 80s rock, he is invested and involved and geeking out about music more than Will atp. He also likes calmer artists tho like Fleetwood Mac and MAYBE Lana Del Rey. Idk tho.
His first job would totally be a haunted house operator. Also his dad and Will would force to get a job to build social skills too lol.
Everyone thinks his eyes r creepy and dehumanizing but if you actually, like, LOOK into them carefully, his eyes are full of a lot if pain and misery but they are kind and gentle as well. Also, after meeting Will, you can start to see some sparkle in his eyes.
His favorite types of movies are the ones with big plot twists. You would think his fav genre is horror and he likes it but he actual fav genre is actually like tender and loving romance and coming of age movies. But as I said, big plot twists. Like Sweeny Todd, The Village or Pan’s Labyrinth. Idk if he would watch those specifically but movies like those. Especially Sweeny Todd, tho, he would watch that.
He is so soft for his little sister (cannon) and he gets her any candy she wants from a nearby store or gas station when she’s on her period. And usually, Hazel doesn’t tell anyone bc that how it was in the 30s/40s but Nico can see the change her mood for a few days straight or here a pad opening in the bathroom before bed or something. He also doesn’t just go like “bought you chocolate for ur period” and hand it to her in front of everyone, no. He is actually very understanding after living with Bianca for decades and gets her a red show box or something and puts candy, a heating pad and a new stuffed animal every time in there for her and sets it on her bed bc Hazel’s last, like, a week as a personal hc. So yeah, he’s very soft and loves his little sister rjrnrbbebe.
ONE MORE, some solangelo for the heart ig. He likes to personally teach Will how to play the guitar bc he wanted to learn and Nico helps him tune his guitar and all of that. Nico usually teaches him in Cabin 7 in winter when no one’s in there so they have some alone time and just have fun w/ it in general. (Bonus: Will asks Nico to kiss his callused fingers after the first few lessons when his fingers are red after and Nico does so when he said Will did good this time. Nico means good as in being extra cute and fun today.)

something that drives me insane abt shadow the hedgehog (2005) is how the gameplay supports the narrative. shadow doesn't know who he is, who he was, or who he wants to be. he's chasing an illusion of himself. all of the ten main endings has someone else decide for him who he is - what maria wanted him to be. what the gun commander thinks he is. one of eggmans androids. black dooms weapon. geralds instrument of revenge. and most importantly, in each of those ten endings, he's defined by the player's choices - again, not himself.
in the last way, there is only one ending. there are no choices for the player to make. it's unknown how he got there without the player to choose for him. and it is in this timeline that he chooses for himself who he is, rejecting the past and moving forward.
Live and Learn is about shadow I think. in sa2 he was obsessed with the past and unable to move forward. hell, he was essentially suicidal, unwilling to live, much less learn. and even after he dies and is brought back he's still obsessed with the past. something that the very game itself is obsessed with - something you're probably obsessed with too, if you like shadow enough to play this game. the level titles are named after sa2 levels (lethal highway = radical highway, lost impact = lost colony, mad matrix = mad space etc) and it reuses several sa2 tracks; the music that plays against GUN mechs, the E.G.G.M.A.N remix, hell the 2p mode just straight up uses Vengeance is Mine... For Radical Highway.
and to have the true ending of the game reject that entirely, to have shadow throw away the picture of maria and gerald and say farewell to the person he used to be... that him saying goodbye is a direct call back to both maria's last words and the end of sonic adventure 2? he's finally learned, and now he's going to truly live. he'll never turn back.

3.🌍What tags or warnings will your/one of your wip(s) need if you intend to share it?
Oh god, this one is a WIP that haunts me in the best way. It's a 10 chapter fic that follows Maria Robotnik's perspective on Shadow the Hedgehog called "Maria Has Loved You Since The Beginning." It follows before Shadow's creation to Maria's last moments alive, diving into Maria's character, characteristics of the 50s culturally, Gerald Robotnik's work as a scientist before Shadow, and how the Ark's life was as a space colony with many different families.
And if you ask, "what would you have to tag for this story? It sounds so sweet beyond her death!" If you know me as a writer, I love ripping people apart emotionally and a girl's death isn't the only anguish she'll ever face in her short life. She's disabled, lost her parents, lived in space for most of her life, and even told her grandfather to not follow through with the original purpose of Project Shadow.
There's nothing more exciting than wanting to tell the tragedy of Maria Robotnik and how her life influences every decision Shadow makes for the rest of his life. She had a huge impact on Shadow, and to see why is just- it makes me so excited to think about still.

Pale, gentle hands lift the tonearm to carefully set her piece of vinyl on the turntable platter, settling the needle down on the beginning of the record and pressing play.
Slow, palliative music begins to play, filling the quiet room with the soothing strumming of tenor guitars and cellos before the singers speak and sing to the swaying tempo of their art.
Since her Grandfather gifted her a few vinyls of The Ink Spots last year for her birthday, Maria has played a specific album each day. Though, despite loving all their music, it was no secret that her favorite was The Anthology.
Every Monday, she would play her favorite to start the week off right, brushing her golden hair while belting the lyrics to Bless You, only to come home from her studies later that day, press play on her record player, and time it just right so she'd finish her first assignments to the song We Three, her favorite song out of them all.
At times, she wished she could replay that one song repeatedly for hours, but Maria loved the wait, knowing that in the end, she'd be rewarded for her patience with her song each and every single time.
Every time she'd zone out of her homework and focus on the lyrics playing in her albums, she'd spot something new in them. The warble of the singer was different from the last, the guitar strings being ever so different from one another in the beginning, and the way the deeper speaker in the band always rumbles through the sound amplifier pleasantly.
She loved discovering new things in everyday things, no matter how small. She was a true Robotnik, always chasing after something amazing, looking at things from all angles. She was proud to wear such a weight to her name, especially when her Grandfather allowed her to watch his experiments with his scientific peers, and she shared their joy and excitement over every trial, hypothesis, and answer.
But nothing made her adventurous heart sore like when she snuck her nose in her Grandfather's business and found that the government back on earth had sent him a project—one that Maria latched onto with all her heart.

Ok I felt as if I should explain how I tag my posts here and how I'll tag them from now on.

Day 4: Music
Shadow shows off a skill he rarely thinks about since he got his memory back.
He was exhausted. As much as he wanted to spend time with Amy, her shopping spree was not his idea of an enjoyable time together. His arms were covered in bags of shoes and dresses, although one bag had a beautiful studded leather jacket that he couldn't turn away from.
“This is the last store and we can have lunch and go back to my place. I really had fun spending time together Shadow!” Her sunny smile was the only thing he could focus on. He let out a breath and followed her into the store.
“It was nice to see you before I had to leave again. GUN has been sending us on missions further away.”
“At least you can go to Soleanna next. I hear it's beautiful during the fall. I was there during the summer and the water was just the perfect temperature!”
“Any recommendations while I’m there?”
“Oh! There are tons of coffee shops that you would love! There is also this amazing restaurant that makes the most delicious crab.”
“I’ll have to give it a try.”
The two walked through the department store and Amy told Shadow to sit down, she needed to pick up a dress she already bought. Shadow wandered around and found something he never thought would be in a department store. There was a beautifully painted piano, with a treble clef painted in black while the rest of the piano was painted white with blue butterflies. Shadow set the bags on his arms on the floor next to the instrument and brushed his fingers over the keys.
It gave him a faint sense of nostalgia to see a piano, untouched yet still full of life. He learned how to play the piano when on the Ark with Maria. It had taken her days of begging to let the professor get them material on learning how to play, but once they had, she was over the moon. She’d drag him to the room to play first thing in the morning if they were both feeling well. They had laughed when they would get so close to perfecting a song, only to accidentally press one or two keys off. He loved playing with her. There were even a few songs that were still engrained in him after all this time. He pressed a finger down on a key and the sound was beautiful. They tuned the piano and it seemed to be kept in good shape.
He could see messy small fingerprints on the keys, probably from children playing around when their parents would go shopping. He smiled remembering the time Maria had brought a chocolate bar into the room and it had smudged on C5. He sits at the beach, nudging the bags closer to the piano and his fingers begin to press the keys. It felt like second nature and he felt as though his sister were there with him. She would hum to the music and he could see the gentle sway of her body as he would play. It was almost like she was dying to have a partner to dance with.
He was oblivious to the crowd that began to surround him. Families and not, they would stand and listen to him play. When Amy had made her way back to Shadow she smiled. This was something new to their relationship. He had mentioned in passing he would play the piano with Maria, but to hear it was something completely new. It was beautiful. She was excited to get to know him even more and learn about all sorts of things he could do and did not often show to others.

she's a kaldorei priestess of elune from the warcraft universe, and one of my oldest ocs (though not my first warcraft oc) i've had her since i was in high school and i've probably fully fleshed out and developed her the most over any character i have.
he literally means the world to me, and is constantly changing and growing and evolving... my most blorbo bleebus of all time, if you will...

fae (yes, i go by faye, he goes by fae) ultimately began as a rebellious sister of elune heavily inspired by maria von trapp-- specifically while she's still a nun-- from the sound of music. i wanted to make him flighty and curious and reckless, and even a bit naive.
this nature eventually led him to pursue archaeology... mf got a special interest in the study of elune Herself, and a very strange relationship with her where, on one hand, he reveres her for the goddess she is and sees her as a mother figure. on the other hand, he wants to study her, find out what she is and where she comes from. by that token, i think yfaera carries a quiet resentment for elune that roots back to trauma from her mother, and later, her peers.

yfaera's mom was not a good person. she isolated yfaera, tried to raise her on highborne principals, rarely let her outside-- justice was eventually dealt and yfaera was taken to an orphanage in starfall village, winterspring. from her arrival, she became the town trouble maker, always running off and getting into sticky situations.
he carries the weight of this title no matter where he goes, even to this day. while he's grown into himself and most certainly matured in some aspects, yfaera is always going to be a curious and free-spirited troublemaker through and through. she is touched by the void after a very intense and unhealthy fling with a n'zoth witch. it forever changed her, giving way to a sort of ecliptic theme with waxing/waning moon phases (shadow vs. light)
even in spite of her dark side, yfaera is a loving and caring person who always tries to find the positive in other people. she's silly and child-like in some ways, and a natural healer. while an adolescent, it took yfaera lots of struggling to figure out who or what she was, actively resisting the life of a healer/sister of elune.
unfortunately for her, the gifts were innate. they came naturally-- and now she struggles to bear the own self and peer-imposed responsibility that comes with it. even so, yfaera is compassionate and empathetic, and will help someone at the drop of a pin should they ask. he was heavily involved in the recovery of teldrassil refugees after the war of thorns, and gave so much of himself to being a field medic during that time in his life.
by circumstance, he's slowly gained the favor of my own homebrew version of the blue child-- often receiving premonition dreams tinted in deep blues, his lunar magic changing in not only appearance but by its very nature.
she's an herbalist and painter, and loves making maps and naturalist journals. she's even recently started an archaeological guild with her mate, faerandiel thornheart! unfortunately for her, they died, though. it's a whole thing.
during the 3 year time skip prior to dragonflight, yfaera spent an unfathomable and unhealthy amount of time researching ways to bring faerandiel back, side-by-side with her girlfriend larisben dren and a few others. regrettably, all of their efforts have come up short.
yfaera has since found herself in a depressive rut, trying to find her spark again-- now abandoned by the blue child. she's even cut her hair short (i don't have any art of it yet that i like aahh) the dragon isles are helping her find peace, bringing new discoveries and opportunities, and she's taken up dragon riding as another one of her many, many hobbies!
unfortunately that's not going to last long. something in her is deeply corrupted and it's only going to get worse from here on out! :) <3 yay!
this literally doesn't even scratch the surface of everything about yfaera, there's so much history with her that it would take me days to type out lol. love her so much. my scrunkly who i am so mean to </3

Second Chance AU Shadow (Headcanons Masterlist)
I was encouraged by a certain someone to share all the Shadow headcanons I omitted from a more recent post, but it quickly got away from me and turned into a sort of masterlist with all the links being added in for context.
So in the interest of eventually having a working catalogue of "view these specifics posts for more organized information on Second Chance AU instead of sifting through various rambles", here it is!

He figures things out about himself/interacts with new or developing interests in phases. Which is probably pretty standard, but so far he’s gone through a particular trend of weather —> photography/scrapbooking —> food —> adventuring/getting into Situations [you are here]. No telling what’s up next, but he never really abandons discovered interests either. He still keeps up with photography/scrapbooking, still appreciates new weather patterns/cloud formations and whatnot, and is basically never not thinking about Good Food. I would love for him to some day focus on music and maybe pick up an instrument or something; he could learn piano from Metal’s caretaker, even.
Discovering preferred foods is also a slow but unique process in that he doesn’t notice, really, until someone else points out he has a clear preference for something. From his perspective, he still doesn’t really have favorites because why would he, but anyone else would be able to tell there are certain things he gravitates toward (and that applies to everything, not just food). So far, other than expensive chocolates, that’s mostly tomatoes, whether raw or roasted; cherry tomatoes especially. They’re somewhat of a comfort food at this point. A few other honorable mentions: avocado, sautéed spinach mixed in with things, and grilled veggies in general. Weird little kid who goes out of his way to ask for vegetables, really. He also especially likes the crunch of carrots, but celery and lettuce on their own practically insult him for how comparatively tasteless they are.
Don’t ask him what his favorite color is either. He has no idea. He likes the green Emerald the most, but also the light blue one (he’ll never admit it, if just because he doesn't consciously realize it, but it’s because that one specifically reminds him of Metal). From his perspective, that’s about as much as he’s able to place; wires get crossed and he answers according to his Chaos Emerald color preference, not ‘colors in general’. From my perspective, I see it as him being partial to blue and green because that’s what he’d most commonly see from the ARK, looking down at earth. Objectively, blue probably wins by sentimentality alone, given so many of the people he’s close with are/were inherently associated with blue.
He starts a lot of sentences with “I think”, as a sort of parallel to Metal regularly starting statements with “but”. Those who don’t know him might wrongly assume that this, paired with the fact he rarely speaks above something comparable to a whisper, means he’s not very assertive/sure of himself. Not the case, he’s just naturally very quiet. To hear him use his whole chest to speak is unusual, and to hear him shout is downright shocking.
He rests his hand on his forehead to self-soothe, as leaning it against Maria was something he would regularly do when cuddling with her back then. As a direct consequence of this, he does not allow people to touch his head without warning, but pushing his forehead into someone's chest/shoulder is often something he does automatically if someone hugs him, so it's an "on my terms only" kind of thing.
This is very much canon. She/her feels like he’d be stepping on toes (that’s for Maria, not him), they/them doesn’t quite feel right, and neo pronouns are not for him. So, using he/him really is just for the sake of convenience. It’s not quite right, but being referred to that way doesn’t bother him either, so there’s really nothing else for it. That’s just how it is.
The more exploring and such he does, the less sensitive his paw pads get. That eventually leads to wearing half-gloves instead.
He currently lives in a place that looks an awful lot like space. The house is shared with Metal, and has two stories. Upstairs is where his study/bedroom technically are, but he rarely goes up there to do anything but write. A majority of his time is spent downstairs, either cooking or napping. Who needs a proper bed when he has a comically oversized blanket to make a nest out of? (This blanket is eventually torn beyond reasonable repair. While it's replaced with another of similar size, the original is eventually tailored into a jacket.)
Re: this, it directly lends to what I was getting at in this post. There will come a day where he’s so much more “Maria” than himself that he practically drops everything and has to find a more earth-looking [second] home. He will keep and take care of this place even after the “Maria day” passes. I expect this location to be mostly rural—he wants to appreciate nature, its sounds, weather, and things like sunrise/sunsets unhindered, but not so much that he’s fully isolated. Maybe on the outskirts of a smaller town, but still within walking distance of it so he can check in and people-watch or window shop, things like that.
Relatedly, his relationship with his own age is complicated at best. He's neither adult nor child. (There is no argument to be made about how mentally mature he is otherwise. No matter how you spin it, he is still a minor. Arguments about that are not tolerated here.)
The rest of the points are arguably less general and more “Shadow regularly gets himself into trouble: the series” and delves into things like his regeneration ability/biology in relation to the Black Arms/etc, so I’m stuffing ‘em under the cut. Nothing particularly gory or anything like that, just a general courtesy in case people don’t want to read about that rougher/more scientific aspect of his character.
Shortly after his revival, he (safely) gave himself over to trusted scientists. For a few months, he underwent a gauntlet of tests/scans/etc in hopes they would help him find a cure for the illness Maria suffered. Some of these scans were painful despite what he thought was a high pain tolerance, which came as a surprise to him. This is relevant for most of the upcoming points.
Most controversial take: he finds guns boring. Primarily in the sense of what’s being used against him as a weapon, though. Bullets will not stop him. If you want him to stop moving, you’re going to have to lop something clean off, then flip a coin. Heads he stops, tails he’s too hyped up on adrenaline/chaos energy and will still wreck the antagonist’s shit.
Needless to say, his relationship with pain/injury is a bit weird, to the point of being distressingly casual about it. He can recover from just about any damage within reason; so far, he can and has regenerated an entire arm before (with help from an Emerald). Pain and dangerous situations that might inflict damage do not scare him.
His tolerance for pain is another matter entirely, though. In some twisted kind of way, once he realized he does in fact have a limit/pain threshold (e.g., the scans, and a particular other few events, even before the arm loss), he almost started getting more reckless to challenge and raise that threshold. His pain tolerance is already pretty high, so the fact there still exists situations in which damage exceeds that tolerance is almost like a thrill/challenge. He won’t go out of his way to or purposely hurt himself, but if the dangerous situation he’s half-intentionally placed himself in causes an accident or something, then so be it. The more experience he gains, the less likely he's going to be stunlocked by pain when stakes are high.
If he’s left to his own devices for too long, he gets restless. Being restless leads to getting himself into Situations (e.g., the above points, and also kind of like this.) Basically his impulse control just plummets. That’s where races or spars with Metal might eventually come in later. He can only stand being serene and mild-mannered for so long. There is still Black Arms blood in him; it's where he gets his otherwise well-hidden temper/competitiveness/etc. Playing rough with Metal, who has a similar “so what if I lose an arm, it can be repaired” outlook, is a good way to safely manage and expend that energy when it starts to drive him a bit stir-crazy.
Speaking of blood, his is not green. The chaos energy overrides the Black Arms’ blood color, so instead his glows bright gold in the first few seconds it’s exposed to air, and then gradually dulls down into a near-black.
In the event he’s injured, the spots being healed/regenerated come back a bit paler, not unlike a scar (the fur, too, is a bit finer). Eventually his fur evens back out to the usual black, but is a bit longer around the edges of where the injury was for a little while after/to the point he might have to manually trim it. Also tends to keep souvenirs of sorts when he gets into Situations. (General sketch page mulling over all of this. I'm still not 100% sure about the 'his fur eventually goes back to its normal color' thing; he may just Stay Like That with the paler patches/missing quills/etc like regular scars, but until I decide for sure, I'm just operating under the assumption this is not the case.)
He's essentially a highly efficient energy burner. Food/water just gets converted into pure chaos energy. Nothing is wasted; frankly his anatomy doesn't even allow for it.
In the same vein, he can go a few days without food/water, but it'll take a lot to replenish his energy stores. It's typical for him to go into an almost coma-like sleep for a few days to recover from critical injuries (not unlike in Sonic Battle). Outside of that, if he doesn't replenish his chaos energy quickly enough, he stays lethargic/fatigued for about a week.
He is biologically incapable of contracting illnesses (the Metal Virus would still, hypothetically, be an exception), and cannot be poisoned. Whether it's inhaled/ingested, he'd just cough or spit it back out without it taking effect. Similarly, he doesn't experience typical nausea outside of extreme fatigue/pain, so it's one of the few things he knows of due to his time with Maria, but can't really empathize with.
When tired, he's more Creature than not. There's a lot more little squeaks/chirps/huffs and whatnot that you'd expect from a typical hedgehog. This is especially true when he's already asleep/recovering. If he's cradled or hugged for an extended period of time, he will start to purr in a way more comparable to a bear cub than cat. It's so faint it's more felt than heard, and can otherwise only be heard by the person actively holding him.

Sonic Frontiers (2022) Story Review
Disclaimer: I will be judging this game by the plot and writing, not the gameplay.
Introduction
Greetings, mortals! For today's review, we'll be looking at one of the most recent main series installments of the Sonic franchise, Sonic Frontiers (2022).
I can't believe it's already been a year since this game was first released (time flies, doesn't it?), but anyway, I hope you all enjoy my long overdue Sonic Frontiers review... 😅
Though honestly in retrospect, it's actually a good thing I waited this long to finish the review, considering The Final Horizon update had been released earlier this year, which in my opinion, was a major improvement over the base game's third act in a multitude of ways.
This is part of a series of reviews in which I’ll be going into slightly more detail about my thoughts on the main series Sonic game storylines, and why I think they're either well written and engaging, or an absolute trainwreck (or somewhere in-between). I’ll be giving my stance on the character portrayals, visuals, soundtracks, voice actors, and what themes/messages they had to offer. Keep in mind that these are just my own personal thoughts. Whether you agree or disagree, feel free to share your own thoughts and opinions!

Anyway, let us begin! ^^
Plot
Sonic explores the mysterious Starfall Islands to collect the Chaos Emeralds after he and his friends are separated when falling through a wormhole. Sonic struggles to find and save his friends while facing a horde of robotic giants called Titans, and also meets an artificial girl named Sage, created by Dr. Eggman, who cautions Sonic to leave the Starfall Islands.
Characters
For the first time in little over a decade, the characters are written correctly. I love how the characters acknowledge how badly they've been written by Pontaff during the Meta Era and have all been redeemed here.
Sonic has been reverted back to his original personality from the Adventure/Dark Era titles, striking a perfect balance of his cockiness and his heroic nature. His playful and snarky attitude is still present, but done in moderation while also highlighting his empathy and dedication to his friends.
Amy, Knuckles and Tails all receive major character development over the course of the game's story. They all learn to be independent individuals, believe in themselves as heroes rather than Sonic, and go their own separate ways for a while. I also like how they play a more active role in the revamped version of the game's climax shown in The Final Horizon update.
Additionally, Dr. Eggman also has some proper development over the course of the story. At first, he uses Sage and treats her as a normal AI, but later on he shows genuine care for her as if she's his own daughter.
Now let's talk about the newcomer, Sage. Her character arc is learning love and wanting to be Eggman's daughter, which really hit me in the feels by the end. Her story honestly reminds me of Shadow's character arc in SA2, only Sage still has her Maria alive and while Shadow came back in his next game appearance after SA2 due to fan demand, Sage on the other hand was resurrected in a post-credit scene due to the replicable nature of AI, and in The Final Horizon update, she's spared her death entirely. I hope she goes on to become a recurring character in the series just like Shadow did.
Visuals
The in-game cutscenes look good visually for the most part, and I do like the cinematography for some of them.
Soundtrack
As usual for the Sonic series, the music in this game is awesome. I'm Here and Undefeatable are two of my favorite vocal tracks. Vandalize, Break Through It All, Find Your Flame and One Way Dream are also amazing. The game's credits themes sung from Sage's perspective, Dear Father (the base game's first credits theme) and the credits theme of The Final Horizon DLC, I'm With You (vocal version) were both truly touching and heartfelt in their own ways.
Voice Acting
Needless to say, the current Sonic voice cast has significantly improved since their last game appearance. Roger Craig Smith gives Sonic a more mature tone of voice, showing just how much he's developed as a character over the past two games and became more humble. Ryan Bartley does an excellent job portraying Sage, Colleen O'Shaughnessey (Tails) is great as always, and Cindy Robinson (Amy) gives a more reserved and less high-pitched voice performance on par with how she sounded in Sonic Boom and Sonic Forces. Dave B. Mitchell's performance as Knuckles has greatly improved since we last saw him in Team Sonic Racing, giving the character a more stern, yet somewhat laid-back tone. Mike Pollock's performance here is one of the most nuanced portrayals of Dr. Eggman in the entire series, retaining his usual hamminess and humorous tendencies while also showing a much wider range of emotions which haven't been seen since as far back as the Adventure games or even 06.
Theme/Message
Throughout the game's story, the pervading and most impactful theme is that of love, in all shapes and forms. Specifically, including Sonic's general love for the people close to him, Sonic and Amy's love for the world, the love between friends Sonic and Knuckles share, the familial love Sonic and Tails share as surrogate siblings, the developing love between Eggman and Sage as a bond of father and daughter, many relationships and bonds demonstrated between the Ancients/Koco, and so on. What makes it particularly powerful here is how unafraid the story is to touch upon how these bonds may be stressed by separation, strife, grief, despair and loss, and still manage to prevail in the end over impossible odds.
Conclusion
Overall, I love Sonic Frontiers for reverting the Sonic franchise's writing style back to how it was before the Pontaff duo came on board, and it's a good foundation for the future of Sonic games. The Meta Era titles from the previous decade were holding Sonic back and were generally the worst part of the franchise in my opinion. The comics are awesome, the movies are awesome, the Sonic Boom TV series was generally well-received (even though I personally can't stand it), and from what I've seen of the first two seasons so far, Sonic Prime is easily the best Sonic show since Sonic X in my opinion, whereas the games since 2013's Sonic Lost World have been failure after failure with the exception of Sonic Mania. The story and writing quality of the game series started going downhill with Sonic Colors in 2010, and while the gameplay of both Colors and Generations is admittedly good, it still doesn't excuse the downgraded writing quality and boring childish stories. I'm happy that the games aren't holding Sonic back anymore, but are more on par with everything else Sonic is in. Here's hoping the new era of Sonic will prove itself to be a bright new future for the Blue Blur.

Not that everything comes back to her mother, but I think Adaia's loss is one of the things that's going to push Wen's buttons every single time. This song is about someone watching a loved one from the afterlife (perhaps as a ghost?), knowing that they can't really do much to help but still reaching out over and over again anyway

I've talked about this before, I think, but this song so encapsulates her watching Ferelden fade into the distance from a ship bound for Kirkwall. Everything she's ever known, her sister's body, her home, her father's final resting place---gone. The grief of losing her homeland lies firmly under all the others until she goes back again someday. Thinking about Ferelden makes her feel an unshakeable sense of loss even years later.

Elowen: Queen of Nothing by The Crane Wives
This song taps into Elowen's imposter syndrome, the sneaking belief that everyone else knows that she is a fraud and she has already doomed herself in some looming, unknowable way. Deep down, she believes that she is not enough and it will eventually and inevitably hurt the people she cares for best.

Emmaera: Chords by The Amazing Devil
For Emma, I think that she often gets caught on the knowledge that to love something is to have already lost it. Nothing lasts forever, but how do you love something even knowing that it will be lost? The thought of it fills her with a soft melancholy, and I think this song (which is about one's children leaving home at last) taps into that feeling.
Choice lyrics: "Pick your chords well, loves/ but sing your notes off-key/ You can't rehearse the chorus, but the verse is sweet/ And if your voice begins to crack, if you ever feel alone/ They might laugh because you're leaving, but know we'll sing your name when you come home."
Salshira: Neptune by Sleeping At Last
Salshira knows that she's intentionally presented a fragmented picture of herself to everyone else. She does this to keep her truest self safe, but it also means that it's really hard for others to really know her. In turn, she never really feels seen or known. I think this song is an uncomfortable mirror held up to those parts of her personality.

Wen is easily the most graceful of my OCs, but I think she probably gravitates to music she can grind or headbang to. In her modern AU, she is very much into music you can feel with your whole body.
Maria: Dance the Night by Dua Lipa (and a backup, Universe by Ambar Lucid)
Maria is very good at formal, structured dances (she's an excellent partner for the waltz, for example) but she's awful at anything free-form, so I want you to imagine her with her hands over her head, flailing to both of these songs. Gorgeous woman laughing her head off doing the most ungraceful dance moves known to Thedas.
Elowen: Labyrinth by Miracle Musical
It wouldn't be her if even a song she would dance to wasn't also about being trapped in a maze of your own making lol (but I picture Elowen's dancing as lots of shoulder work and rhythmic swaying, maybe the occasional gesture of her hands if she's really feeling the lyrics)

Death’s WhiteRose
So for those of you who care DWR or Death’s WhiteRose is the pairing for Ruby Rose/Weiss Schnee/Maria Calavera (young).
I’ve had some people basically ask why ship it at all and so here we go. Please of course remember this is for fun and my own interpretations of things.
Outside of the fact that they’re all pretty, which to be fair they are, I find that they work absurdly well as a trio and have a lot in common.
To start with they’re all huntresses with a missing/deceased mother. Ruby’s mother is dead (at least at the time of writing this) or missing, Weiss’s mother may as well be and hasn’t been her mother in over a decade and in fact is reduced to a laughing shadow in ice queen, and Maria only ever has mention of her father which is listed as unnamed.
These losses have helped shape them into who they are. Weiss strives to be perfect, Ruby strives to help people, and Maria is an interesting mix of both. She helps people and eventually buys into her own hype of being the Grimm Reaper and is the perfect fighter who thinks she doesn’t need others.
Much like Weiss Maria thinks she’s fine enough to stand on her own, but unlike Weiss, Maria didn’t have anyone to help show her that she needs others no matter who skilled you are.
Her hubris leads to her calling herself a failed huntress even after she still manages to kill her attackers but loses her eyes in the process.
The idea of Maria feeling like she has to stand on her own only to be met by someone like Weiss who had the same idea but found solace in her team, and partner Ruby and decides that maybe that’s the thing to try and slowly opens up and starts trusting people and letting them in is a great narrative.
Maria gets to trust and confide in others and see that teamwork does make the dream work, Ruby gets a silver eye mentor, and Weiss gets another silver eyed harem girl. A joke but she gets another person to rely on that has a vested interest in her as a person rather than as her family name as Maria much like Ruby just doesn’t seem to care about things of that nature and they both get a more experienced training partner to help them grow while Maria gets a pair of people who can teach her to work with others, and trust again to make her even better than she was alone.
In another amusing note in music, counterpoint is the relationship between two or more musical lines (or voices) which are harmonically interdependent yet independent in rhythm.
And wouldn’t you know it the three share a counterpoint with their theme songs which at first seems highly improbably until you realize counterpoints aren’t as exact as you’d imagine.
Maria doesn’t have an “official” song but we do have Grimm Reaper which I think we can all agree is basically a stand in for her at this time but if they want to release an official song for her then by all means gimmie.
The first minute of the song is a gentle intro which fits and slots neatly into Weiss’s mirror mirror, and then at around the one minute mark is ramps up into an action beat that syncs well with Red Like Roses II aka Ruby’s song. After that at the end it transitions back to a more somber song.
And of course if you listen to the lyrics much like has been said more openly in Ice Queendom Ruby and Weiss are both very lonely people despite being surrounded by others, and very clearly Maria is as well. She’s spent decades punishing herself for her mistakes and even before then lived alone going around fighting as nothing but a machine.
The idea of the three of them getting a chance to be happy together, of filling in the holes each leaves to make a whole is a great one.
Is it crack because Maria was born decades before them so young Maria isn’t really a thing outside of fanfic? Yes, but I write fanfic, and well who’s to say Weiss’s time glyphs, and Ruby’s semblance don’t have a misadventure and they end up back in time to save Maria from losing her eyes? (Yes I wrote that fic and no I feel no shame about it)
At any rate that doesn’t even get into all the other great ways their fighting styles mesh. With Maria’s up close and personal style and predilection for showboating something both WR have shown before, or birthday significance or the fact that Maria has two weapons (and two hands!)
And again have I mentioned how cute they are?

So yes it’s basically a crack ship but remember this from the Vol 9 teaser
I’m not saying that has to be maria, but if it is she’s looking mighty taller than before, and the skin is about the right shade.
So if young maria is on the island I think we have a real chance at making crack fic real fic. WHO IS WITH ME?

I figure I'll put my videogame thoughts here on Tumblr, so I can establish a pattern.
Anyways, I'm a couple hours into 428: Shibuya Scramble trying to grasp the larger context it provides for the short anime series called Canaan.
Much of the setup in this game is prior to Canaan's storyline. For the longest time the most salient connection to Canaan seemed to be the reporter Minorikawa. And despite the transition from anime to live action it's really him, and his mannerisms bring it across quite well that he's the same guy. In the anime he was working with his photographer Maria Osawa, but he doesn't mention her, so I get the feeling they haven't met yet.
Next closest connection to the Canaan anime is Maria Osawa... who's been a hostage offscreen in the starting scenario. She's been quite literally not in the game other than as a plot device. Maria is friends with Canaan... so far there's been no sign of Canaan... Gee, what's Canaan up to these days?
Instead we've been following Achi, a dude who's helping Hitomi Osawa; Maria's sister. They've been running in circles evading capture by the syndicate. Hitomi was told where to go find Maria and so far... the Syndicate has been trying to add her to the hostage situation; That's no good.
Meanwhile Mr. Osawa, the Bio researcher studying the Ua virus (AHA! a major backstory connection) is nervous at home because his daughter Maria is a hostage, and his other daughter Hitomi was taking the ransom money and now no one knows if Hitomi's okay (except Achi), and the bad guys have the ransom money. Mr. Osawa is a nervous wreck, but he likes to calm himself with this cool singers music...
I remember there was a taxi driver in Canaan who had this cool singer whose music he liked to jam with while driving high tension style off the ends of unfinished bridges... (He's not been in the game but it's a crazy fun and ridiculous anime partially due to his scenes. Anyways, I don't think it's the same singer, but the concept is close in terms of delivery.)
Then there's the syndicate, the closest I've seen the situation get to Alphard (Canaan's archnemesis from the Canaan anime) is a dark encounter with a shadowy figure who stabbed one of the protagonists- (Kano) during a bad end (You can try to change the story in this game... sometimes you get to keep going, sometimes you kill the protagonist) I think it's her, but I don't know so yet.
Right, I haven't brought up that guy, the protagonist shadowing members of the syndicate is Kano, the detective on the case to rescue Maria from the Hostage situation... his father in law to be is looking for every excuse to not be his father in law and just might find it because Kano keeps hanging up on his calls... which Kano is very sad about, because he does want to marry his girlfriend. It's never the right time to take a call from some father in law when Maria Osawa's life is on the line
And that brings me to Tama the mascot cat. Tama just wants to buy a necklace, so Tama got a shady part time job working for a guy trying to scam people so he can afford to pay off the very large bill for some scam merchandise he bought. Tama's storyline seems only vaguely adjacent to Canaan in that Tama has a mascot head on that seems like the headgear the unblooms were wearing in the anime. Tama has held a secret, who is Tama? Why is this storyline in the 428 game, what connection does Burning Hammer diet drink have to do with Canaan? Why can't Tama take the costume head off? Is Tama an unbloom?
I got to the part where Tama gets to buy the necklace, and... I just found out who Tama is.
Keep Out! (a cheeky reference to the games use of caution tape when a threshold of the storyline has been crossed and certain conditions haven't been met yet.)
I'm enjoying this game, the connections to Canaan the anime are still cloaked in mystery, but little by little the pieces are falling into place. It's not immediately apparent, but I'm slowly getting how Kinoko Nasu might have pulled his Canaan anime storyline out of 428: Shibuya Scramble.
