Gal Gadot, Kylie Jenner, Mark Ruffalo: Israel-Palestine war leaves celebrities divided

Several Hollywood stars, athletes and singers face a backlash for supporting Israel, while others are praised for their nuanced take on the conflict

Celebrities including Hollywood A-listers, influencers, and pop stars have been giving their opinions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after fighters from the besieged Gaza Strip shocked Israel with their unprecedented land, air and sea assault on Saturday.

Influencer and fashion mogul Kylie Jenner found herself at the centre of a social media storm when she shared a now-deleted post expressing support for Israel.

The Instagram post featured the Israeli flag alongside the message: "Now and always, we stand with the people of Israel."

Jenner's stance drew widespread criticism.

Many questioned her understanding of Israel's 75-year occupation of the Palestinian territories.

One social media user wrote: "Kylie Jenner wouldn't know where the Middle East is on a map but is letting her 400 million Instagram followers know she stands with Israel."

Israeli actress and star of Wonder Woman Gal Gadot, who has previously shown support for the Israeli army, was also criticised for her response to the latest bout of violence.

"I stand with Israel you should too," Gadot posted on Instagram.

"The world cannot sit on the fence when these horrific acts of terror are happening," she said. "My heart is aching. Praying for all of those in pain."

Palestine: 10 celebrities who have voiced their solidarity

Gadot's comment section has since been flooded with users writing "Free Palestine" and messages featuring the Palestinian flag emoji.

Comedian Sarah Silverman expressed her concern for her sister, nieces and nephews, who have been protesting against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's controversial judicial reform plans for months.

"Fight for a two state solution. Israelis are Jews and Arabs and all colours," she said.

Silverman also acknowledged the nuanced complexity of the conflict before denouncing Hamas' mission statement.

Mark Ruffalo, who has played the Hulk in several Marvel blockbuster films including The Avengers franchise, was also criticised for blaming both sides for the latest escalation.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, the usually pro-Palestine actor shared a message from journalist and author Nathan Thrall, which said: "It is horrific to see innocent civilians killed and held hostage, and there is no justification for it.

"We pray for their safety, as we pray for the safety of the innocent people of Gaza who are being bombarded and besieged."

Professional boxer and model Younes Bendjima criticised the idea of blaming both sides for the fighting, writing: "I'd love to but I can't... there's only one side."

He went on to highlight the illegal occupation of Palestinian lands, restrictions on movement, the discriminatory treatment of Palestinians at checkpoints, and the presence of Israeli snipers in the occupied territories.

Bendjima also emphasised the disparity in international support, noting that Palestinians don't enjoy the backing of the United States.

He also drew attention to the constant presence of Israeli warplanes in the region, which fly over the Palestinian territories making, he said, "kids wet their beds in fear".

Former New Zealand rugby international player Sonny Bill Williams posted: "Praying for Gaza!" accompanied with a Palestinian flag.

Meanwhile, US Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad shared a quote from Malcolm X which read: "If you are not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing."

However, Arsenal and Ukrainian full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko found himself mired in controversy when he reposted an image from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs featuring the Star of David.

Alongside the image, his story read: 'I stand with Israel.'

But after he was met with a fierce backlash from his own fans, Zinchenko removed the comments and made his account private.

'When you hurt children, your cause is doomed'

Singers also weighed in with mixed reactions to the conflict.

Swedish singer Zara Larsson drew attention to what she perceived as a double standard in international reactions to conflicts, posting on her story: "Oh so it's stand with Ukraine when Russia invades but not Palesti-."

Larsson's remarks shed light on the wider issue of the West's inconsistent response to various conflicts.

The fashion influencers Simi & Haze Khadra shared a similar sentiment, reposting a series of slides on their social media platform, highlighting human rights violations endured by Palestinians.

They noted that "absolute Zionist thinking collapses conversation and villainizes empathy for a Palestinian population that has extensively experienced torture, kidnapping, murder and other oppressive colonialist tactics at the hands of an apartheid state for decades."

However, singer Boy George expressed support for Israel, writing: "When you hurt women, children, and the elderly, your cause is doomed. I stand with Israel."

His remarks were met with criticism by several social media users who responded with lists of the women, children, and elderly killed by Israeli forces in recent months and years.

According to another passenger on the plane, Taylor plays Scrabble during the flight (presumably on her phone because nobody takes big physical board games on commercial flights and the creepshot of Hiddleswift on the plane suggests she wouldn't have had anywhere to put the board anyway). In hindsight, knowing how Taylor and Joe play lots of Scrabble together including online Scrabble aka Words With Friends, and how they stayed in touch largely via texting that summer, it’s very possible she was playing against Joe.

Flying from LA to Australia involves crossing the international dateline, so they would have left the US on the 6th July local time and arrived in Sydney approx 15 hours later on the 8th July local time.

Calvin's new song Olé, written for John Newman, is released. There is speculation that it's a Hiddleswift song, written from Tom's perspective and containing lyrics implying that Taylor cheated on Calvin with Tom. However, sources also told multiple outlets that the song was written and recorded months earlier, and its supposed links to Hiddleswift were just for publicity. (x) (x)

Jul 9th - Tom goes out for a run (x) and avoids answering questions about Taylor. (x)

Jul 10th - Taylor and Tom go out for dinner to Gemelli Italian restaurant in Broadbeach on Australia's Gold Coast. (x)

Jul 11th - Taylor is named as the highest earning celebrity on the 2016 Forbes Celebrity 100 list, with earnings of $170m mostly due to the 1989 World Tour. If she and Calvin had not split up, they would have been the top-earning celebrity couple. (x)

TMZ claims that Taylor wrote TIWYCF, and that Calvin disrespecting Taylor following its release was the reason for their breakup. (x)

Taylor Swift really is the creative brains behind Calvin Harris' monster hit "This is What You Came For," and their relationship fell apart because he disrespected her when the song was released ... this according to sources connected with Taylor.

It's a fascinating story. We've learned an early fan rumor about the song is true, but to a deeper extent than anyone suspected. During their relationship, Taylor wrote the song, sat down at a piano and did a demo into her iPhone. She sent it to Calvin, who loved it. They both went into a studio and did a full demo with Taylor on vocals and Calvin doing the beat.

They both knew the song would be a hit, but Taylor wrote it for Calvin and both agreed it was a bad idea to let the world know they collaborated as a couple ... it would overshadow the song.

So Taylor, who kept the publishing rights, used the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg on the credits.

The problem in the relationship came the day the song was released. Calvin appeared on Ryan Seacrest's radio show and Ryan asked, "Will you do a collaboration with your girlfriend?" Calvin responded, "You know we haven't even spoken about it. I can't see it happening though."

We're told Taylor was hurt and felt Calvin took it too far.

It was a quick downward spiral from that point. One source called it "the breaking point in the relationship." The Met Gala was several days later, when Taylor danced with Tom Hiddleston.

“And then she just didn’t like the reaction?” Kourtney says in response.

“Yeah, and you know just another way to play the victim,” Kim replies. She then brings the infamous VMAs moment from 2009 by saying, “It definitely got her a lot of attention the first time… I just don’t think he should be punished for it still to this day.”

Jul 17th - Kim posts an edited recording of Kanye and Taylor's phone call. In it, they discuss the 'I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex' line and Taylor says, 'Go with whatever line you think is better. It’s obviously very tongue in cheek either way. And I really appreciate you telling me about it. That’s really nice.' However, nowhere in the Snapchat video does Kanye consult her about the line, 'I made that bitch famous,' which is the line Taylor insisted she had never approved. (x) The other Kardashian sisters retweet and support Kim. (x)

(The full recording of the call, leaked in 2020, confirms that Kanye never told Taylor he was going to call her a bitch. It also shows her reminding him that she sold 7 million albums before he had even heard of her, in response to him suggesting the lyric, 'I made her famous.')

Who Killed the Director?

What do a junior detective, a European countess, a Hollywood starlet, and a reluctant charity case have in common? Their time is up. It's 1926 on Hollywood Boulevard, and there's a killer on the loose.

Chapter One:

In John Egbert's defence, it was all supposed to be another simple case. A call, late at night- a messy crime scene- a simple motive- then, at the end of it, enough hush-money in his pocket for a little treat at the end of the month. A classic Hollywood case- the specialty of Egbert Investigations. It was a chilly night on the evening that our story begins- as cold as a California winter could get.

Movie director Jack Noir was dead- and according to his smashed windows and head, murdered. John had never liked messy crime scenes, and this was one of the bloodiest he'd seen in a while. The body's only identifiers were its clothes and the fact that it couldn't have been anybody else anyways- the room was too splattered in blood from the beating to check very much. It was all, he thought, was needed- faked deaths and switched corpses were something out of his sister Jane's dime-novel mysteries, not something that happened here.

She, of course, would have checked- Jane had always been the best detective in the family, always drawn to mystery and intrigue. She would have certainly been a better detective than him, although that wouldn't take much. Still, that was the way it went- eventually, Janey'd left home and married a millionaire, and he was stuck living at home, being the state's worst private investigator to carry on a legacy. And now, eyes searching his half-written case file, he realized that he'd only found three suspects- and he had connections to each one.

Three motives. Three alibis. Three friends. If he didn't already wish Janey had become the detective, he sure did now. John Egbert was starting to get the sinister suspicion that this might not be an easy case after all.

An excerpt from the case file of Jack Noir

Suspect One: Roxanne Marie Lalonde

Miss Lalonde is an actress- a Hollywood starlet, to be more specific. Both she and her half-brother have had feuds with the victim in the past. The night before the murder, she was spotted storming off of set from his studio. The suspect states she was with a friend the night of the murder- Miss Calliope Cherubim. We've already contacted Miss Cherubim to request that she verify these claims, but we are still awaiting a response.

Additional Notes: Roxy couldn't hurt a fly- I've seen her try to do it- and Callie can barely leave the house with her brother's fits, much less attend a trial as an alibi witness. Roxy's my ex-sweetheart, and one of my best friends. I just hope for her sake that she didn't do it. -John Egbert

Suspect Two: Terezi Pyrope

Miss Pyrope is a resident of Holy Dolorosa's Home for the Infirm due to her blindness and status as an orphaned young lady of proper bringing-up. Miss Pyrope is trying to continue her mother's legacy as a crime reporter, and Jack Noir has remained public with his distaste for the writing of Mrs. Redglare Pyrope long after her death, something considered a disgrace to the Pyrope legacy. Miss Pyrope states that she could not have left the Holy Dolorosa's Home without detection, as she must remain on the grounds or with a chaperone at all times. However, an eyewitness report from Miss Nepeta Leijon states that the window of her room had been left open that evening.

Additional Notes: Of course she could have left- this is Terezi we're talking about! And "A young lady of proper bringing-up"? I don't know what standards you're going by, but if propriety is the standard of a lady, she's King Henry the Eighth! I really don't think she did it, though- she's always wanted to build her own fate rather than sustain a legacy. In her mind, the dead don't need defending, and neither does she. Plus, I hate to admit it, but I'd dread the loss of her company in the evenings. -John Egbert

Suspect Three: Feferi Peixes

Countess Peixes is a city-hopping European socialite, although she is currently staying in her Los Angeles residence. She has had many disagreements with Jack Noir in the past, including his controversial push for the removal of City Council support for Holy Dolorosa's Home for the Infirm, which she recently spoke out against. She was seen walking with a mysterious fellow in a worn coat down the street of the studio that evening. Witness reports also state that that evening, she left a charity gala early under unknown circumstances, and returned home late that night.

Additional notes: I'll admit, I don't know Feferi well, but I've met her a few times, and she and Janey are close, if a bit catty at times. Even if she's a bit naive, she really is a sweetheart- not the kind of gal you can see bludgeoning a fellow's head in. The walking's odd, I'll admit that, but that seems less like a plot and more like a love affair. Too bad it's still a closed case- Rose'd have a field day with that story for sure. -John Egbert

Though he did not know it at the time, dear reader, John's suspicions were correct- this would be no ordinary case. The strings of fate are always knotting, intertwining with those around us, but when tragedy strikes, we must unravel them- such is the fate of those left behind. Change is a fickle thing by nature, but it brings both good and bad- time will tell where that balance lies for our heroes, waiting unaware. Perhaps I, too, will be dragged into this fate- I am more character than a creator in this tale. That is the way, I suppose, it always goes.

What are we willing to cancel people over, anyway?

Beautube continues to be the messy hellscape that it is, but the feud that went down between two major YouTubers just goes to show that nobody is above drama. Still, James Charles has a history of problematic behavior — why did it take until now for the community to cancel him?

YouTube's beauty community was shaken on Friday when Tati Westbrook dropped a 43-minute video exposing her longtime friend and mentee James Charles. Among other reprehensible behavior, Tati also denounced his habit of allegedly sexually harassing straight men.

The takedown followed weeks of rumors, screenshots, and snarky reaction videos from other vloggers, so it wasn't new, but it was the catalyst that has other influencers distancing themselves from the teenage makeup guru.

If you're unfamiliar with the wild world of beauty YouTube, here's a rundown of all the people involved.

James Charles is a 19-year-old beauty maven who went viral in 2016 for not only wearing makeup in his senior photos, but also being extra enough to bring a ring light to emphasize his highlighter. Later that year, he became the first male spokesperson for CoverGirl. Since then, he's amassed an immense social media following — at its peak, he had 15 million subscribers on YouTube.

Charles' nearly overnight fame reached a climax usually reserved for traditional celebrities, not influencers, when he was invited to the Met Gala earlier in May. He raised eyebrows when he called the invitation "a step forward in the right direction for influencer representation in the media" in an Instagram post.

But after his rapid ascent to stardom, Charles is now crashing back down. He's been cancelled.

Tati Westbrook is a 37-year-old makeup YouTuber who also owns Halo Beauty, a supplement company that sells gummy vitamins for strengthening hair and nails. Her direct competitor is Sugar Bear Hair, a similar company whose products have been endorsed by a variety of influencers, including the Kardashian-Jenner clan.

Tati has been "like a mother" to James, according to James himself. She took the budding star under her wing when his career was just kicking off — and he even did her wedding makeup.

Keeping up? Good, because this is where it gets messy.

On April 22, James posted an endorsement for Sugar Bear Hair on his Instagram story after the company supposedly helped him with a security issue during Coachella. Without naming names, Tati said she felt "lost" and "betrayed" on her Instagram story.

"When you do so much for people in your life and they not only don't return the favor, but they just don't even see you," Tati said in her tearful video. "I feel really used."

James publicly apologized in similarly teary Instagram story the next day, and told his followers that he "did not think about the competition."

"She has been like a mother to me since my first days in this industry," he said in his public apology, adding that he didn't accept any money for the post and that he uses Tati's vitamin brand daily. "And has given me more love, support, resources, and advice than I could ever ask for."

Fellow makeup YouTuber Gabriel Zamora — who you might remember from the YouTube apology fiasco in summer 2018 known as Dramageddon — weighed in on the situation. In a video posted on May 4, he chided Tati for her immature reaction.

"All these videos are being made where James is being made out to be this horrible human being and I'm just confused as to what happened," Gabriel said.

In response, Tati posted a video on Friday titled "BYE SISTER," a play on James' signature vlog intro, "Hi sisters!" The lengthy video dives into why Tati felt unappreciated by James, from his hesitation to promote her brand to his reluctance to collaborate with her. She publicly severed ties with him, concluding that it was "painful to lose someone you care about, that you thought would be in your life forever, but the chapter's closed."

Since dropping the video, Tati has been rapidly gaining followers as James loses them. Twitter users and other influencers paid attention.

As of Monday morning, James has lost more than 2.5 million subscribers in three days, according to SocialBlade. Tati, meanwhile, gained more than 2.9 million since posting the video. To put that into perspective, as vlogger Callum Markie noted, Logan Paul gained 80,000 subscribers after filming a victim of suicide in Japan.

But the backlash isn't just over snubbing a friend — it's over a much more concerning issue. Although the majority of the video was about her personal relationship with James, it also shed light on his toxic habit of allegedly sexually harassing straight men.

"Oh my god, you tried to trick a straight man into thinking he's gay yet again," Tati ranted in her video, recalling a phone conversation she recently had with James. "And somehow, you're the victim."

She continued:

Tati was alluding to just one of many instances where James toyed with straight men. The receipts channel Spill laid out several examples, including his questionable relationship with model Gage Gomez. In April, Gomez posted a video calling James out for continuing to pursue him despite repeatedly turning him down.

"[He] pushed his emotions onto me to guilt me into trying something that I didn't want to do," the model said.

James has also publicly hit on Shawn Mendes, leaving suggestive comments on the singer's Instagram live videos and tweets.

He later apologized in a tweet, and said he was "sorry if he [Shawn] felt sexually harassed."

After Tati's video, others came forward. Someone who claimed to be a former classmate tweeted that James allegedly sexually assaulted her friend. Singer Zara Larsson also tweeted that James repeatedly hit on her boyfriend, despite knowing that he's straight. And in a supercut of James' vlogs, a Twitter user showed the numerous times the beauty guru admitted he enjoyed pursuing heterosexual men because "it's easier than you think."

It's about time James Charles stopped getting a pass for his repeatedly toxic behavior. But why did it take a video from Tati for the internet to finally cancel him? Twitter user @Quantum_King_ questioned why Tati protected James for years, despite public knowledge that he harassed men both in person and on social media.

And others pointed out how hypocritical it was for Jeffree Star, another member of the YouTube beauty community, to speak out against James despite his own problematic past. (Star has since deleted his tweet, but there is a screenshot included above.)

Is James Charles being canceled because of his actions, or because the internet loves drama? It's been nearly a year since Dramageddon tore Beautube apart, exposing multiple YouTubers for their racist tweets.

Somehow, James' own racist remarks weren't pulled into the whirlwind of cancellation. When he made a transphobic comment earlier in 2019 about how he wasn't "full gay" because he had been attracted to trans men, he received some backlash but got away relatively unscathed. Why is it Tati's video that's tanking his career?

Maybe it's because the internet is willing to give a pass to its faves, until it's time to grab some popcorn and watch a feud go down. It's good that the internet is finally done with James — the face of the beauty community absolutely should not be a predator. But nobody paid attention or sought to hold him accountable until there was a friendship break up involved.

The influencers at the center of Dramageddon have more or less recovered from 2018's Beautube culling. Gabriel Zamora continues to make videos. Nikita Dragun was just profiled in Forbes. Manny MUA is still releasing products from his makeup line, Lunar Beauty. Even Laura Lee, whose iconically terrible apology video fueled Twitter memes for weeks, seems fine according to Instagram.

Will James Charles' cancellation last, or will the internet accept him into the fold again like it did with Jeffree Star? Despite his many controversies, Star is a multimillionaire thriving on top of a massive beauty empire.

"A lot of most of my career over the last two years has been about me making mistakes and trying to learn and grow from them," James stated in his apology video posted Friday. "And I haven't always done the best job of that. I can admit that, but I have always tried ... I wish I could say this is the last time that I make a mistake, but it won't be."

And as his beauty vlogger predecessors have proven, he's at least right about that. Will he stay canceled? Hopefully. Will more makeup-centered drama go down in the near future and take down more racist, transphobic predators? God, we hope so.

US president offers no public rebuke of Rodrigo Dutertes brutal drugs crackdown as he nears end of 12-day Asia tour

Donald Trump has hailed his great relationship with the Philippines president, Rodrigo Duterte, who stands accused of acting with impunity over a brutal war on drugs that has left thousands dead.

The US president made no mention of human rights during brief remarks to reporters prior to a meeting with his counterpart, and both leaders ignored shouted questions about the drugs crackdown.

Trump is in the country with leaders of 18 other nations for two days of summits on the final leg of a headline-grabbing tour of Asia dominated by the North Korean nuclear crisis.

According to a spokesman for Duterte, human rights issues were not raised during the meeting, although the pair did discuss their mutual distaste for Barack Obama.

The issue of human rights did not arise. It was not brought up, Harry Roque said of a 40-minute conversation in Manila. It was President Duterte who brought up with President Trump the drug menace in the Philippines, and the US president appeared sympathetic and did not have any official position on the matter but was merely nodding his head, he said.

Prior to their meeting, Trump said he and Duterte had a great relationship. The Filipino leader then told reporters that the two presidents would speak privately, ushering out journalists he jokingly referred to as spies.

The absence of a proper discussion about rights is sure to anger critics of Duterte. Rights groups and US politicians had strongly urged Trump to confront Duterte on the drugs war.

Duterte, a former prosecutor, has taken an indignant stance to criticism, warning the Catholic church dont fuck with me and accusing the UN of issuing shitting statements about his policies. On Friday he boasted that he had once stabbed a person to death, his latest apparent admission of murder, adding to a list of similar public statements including a claim that he pushed a man out of a helicopter.

At the age of 16, I already killed someone, Duterte said during a speech in Vietnam, where he briefly crossed paths with Trump on the sidelines of another international summit.

Relations between the US and its former colony, allies since the second world war, were at a low during Obamas tenure. Duterte has since pushed for better ties with Russia and China.

Trump and Duterte seem to have warmed to each other after meeting for the first time on Saturday at an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) group meeting in Vietnam.

On Sunday Duterte crooned a hit Filipino love song called Ikaw (You) at a gala dinner for summit leaders in Manila, saying it was on the orders of Trump. One of the songs verses, translated from Filipino, begins: You are the light in my world, a half of this heart of mine.

Trump has generally avoided publicly admonishing foreign leaders for rights abuses and has even shown an affinity for rulers with autocratic tendencies, including the Egyptian president, Abdel-Fatah al-Sisi, and the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

Philippine government officials estimate more than 3,000 people have died in the anti-narcotics drive. Human rights groups believe the death toll of mostly alleged drug users and suspected dealers is far higher.

At the two leaders met, hundreds of leftwing protesters clashed in central Manila with riot police, who used water cannons to disperse the crowds.

The demonstrators chanted against the drugs crackdown as well as other issues such as Trumps bellicose rhetoric on North Korea. They burnt an effigy of the US president that showed the billionaire developer with four arms, all bent into the shape of a swastika.

Duterte has regularly been described as the Donald Trump of Asia for his mercurial temperament and anti-establishment populist support.

Trump had previously praised Dutertes bloody crackdown, saying he was doing an unbelievable job on the drug problem. He continued to shower the president with compliments on Monday.

The Duterte meeting came as the US president wound down his 12-day Asia tour. On Monday Trump also met the Australian prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull, with whom he had a contentious phone call last winter, and the Japanese prime minister, Shinz Abe, who hosted the president in Tokyo earlier in the trip.

Trump raved about his accomplishments on his five-nation journey, including on trade and North Korea, but said he would wait until his return to Washington on Wednesday to elaborate with a major statement.

Lena Dunham continues to prove over and over that she is, indeed, not a friend of women. Some might even say she is trash for her recent comments defending a long time Hollywood writer friend who worked on her hugely successful HBO show Girls. The self-proclaimed feminist and overly privileged Hollywood starlet is no stranger to controversy. From writing a book and outlining how she, essentially, molested her younger sister to all but demanding that a black man give her the time of day at the annual Met Gala, her oblivion and blatant disrespect concerning the most important issues facing marginalized groups in America reeks of someone who has never dealt with issues beyond the scope of her elite world. Her recent support of accused rapist Murray Miller is what rape culture is made of today. Upon learning that actress Aurora Perrineau, daughter of Lost star Harold Perrineau (the black guy who played Michael Dawson), reported that she was raped by Miller, who served as an executive producer and a writer on Girls, Dunham felt the need to make a co-statement with fellow Girls actress Jenni Konner, addressing the situation. But in doing so, she dismissed Perrineau altogether, stating that she’s “confident” the victim got it wrong. Here is the statement in its entirety. “During the windfall of deeply necessary accusations over the last few months in Hollywood, we have been thrilled to see so many women’s voices heard and dark experiences in this industry justified. It’s a hugely important time of change and, like every feminist in Hollywood and beyond, we celebrate,” the two say. “But during every time of change there are also incidences of the culture, in its enthusiasm and zeal, taking down the wrong targets. “We believe, having worked closely with him for more than half a decade, that this is the case with Murray Miller. While our first instinct is to listen to every woman’s story, our insider knowledge of Murray’s situation makes us confident that sadly this accusation is one of the 3% of assault cases that are misreported every year. If it is not the fact that her show was a predominately self-loathing narrative of white womanhood with no real cross-cultural relevance then it is the way she projects her ideals into the world thinking that what she has to say is remotely valid. The girl was born and raised in the industry and was all but given the chance to create a show because of whom her parents are. All of that and more makes it seemingly impossible for her to be a person of substance. She has no depth and everything is, without a doubt, about Lena. How can we really expect her to put herself in someone else’s shoes ever? Dunham and Konner are “confident” that Perrineau is lying. I guess they were there and saw the whole thing. How dare they say with such certainty that something this serious did not happen? Dunham's statement is reminiscent of white male privilege in how absolute her saying that it is all a misunderstanding is; like her words are the final say on the matter. She is totally ignoring the traumatic experience of a woman who had the courage to come forth and say what happened to her. Dunham is saying that the girl lied simply because she worked with Murray for more than half a decade and has “insider knowledge of Murray’s situation.” Bullshit. It is women like her that help perpetuates rape culture. They are the ones that position themselves as individuals who are not pretty enough, who are too frumpy looking, and too - fill in the blank - to ever have to deal with unwanted sexual behavior. They are the first to call bullshit on these kinds of situations. Dunham has said in the past many times how her own feelings of insecurity have been a driving factor in her life. For her to dismiss this very serious charge as someone who proclaims to believe in a movement that is supposed to celebrate and protect women shows that she is a fraud and that her view of feminism, girl power, and what it means to be a woman, in general, is warped. Females like her are the very reason that victims do not come forth. How is it that a “feminist” is the first one to throw a stone at an alleged victim of sexual assault? I am beyond disgusted by her gutsy, compassionless, and bold statement. I am also equally disgusted that in the midst of badmouthing another woman Dunham is also dropping statistics about sexual assault against women, as a way to, I don't know, make it seem less damning. I am not sure why she felt the need to say something at all, (actually I am sure – privilege) but she should have kept quiet. She probably said something because Murray Miller begged her to defend him in the hopes that her reputation is enough to keep the heat off of him. Side note, it’s not. Dunham remains problematic and needs some lessons on, life, rape culture, and real womanhood.
