The Mission to Space
Prologue Ch 1
Summary: Two hackers walk into an RFA party... An innocent night at an RFA party turns into a one night stand, and taking down a terrorist organization.
(I probably will change this summary later I suck at this)

I’m going to change the summary later I just cant figure it out quite yet.
Hours, endless hours of decoding infinite amount of binary and codes. Message after message from governments, important businesses all to protect the public. Nights were long, my brain was fried. I was sick of staring at a computer screen endlessly and passing messages along to my boss. You would think that working as a hacker in a secret branch of the government uncovering bad guys and manipulating the system would be more entertaining than staring at ones and zeros.
I was known as one of the best in my field, infiltrating official’s office and quickly downloading important files on computers without being caught. I was able to decode messages in binary and sort through endless amount of files for certain information. I was contracted through the South Korean government from America to uncover potential threats to society and the government as a whole. After rigged elections and tampering with voting in America, hackers were deemed a potential threat to our own government. Hackers were branded as low-lives and targeted for rigging votes and working with Russian government. It was for safety reasons that the hackers in the sub-group that worked for the government move to other countries to help governments track other potential threats so that the voting scandal would not be repeated again. Hours were long, coding hours in front of an office computer, and working endlessly at home. My roommate had to think I was crazy for never taking a break from work.
I don’t think Amelia even had a clue as to what job I actually had. Luckily, she never even asked about my job.  It was a part of a placement program to help seem like normal every day citizens without drawing too much attention to ourselves in South Korea. I got placed with Amelia, a young entrepreneur who sold bracelets to high end clients. I felt bad turning Amelia down every time she wanted to go out with me. I needed to drink desperately, but more importantly was catch up on much wanted sleep.
I checked my phone dreading reading the actual time. My clock was saying that it was 16:56 PM. I groaned loudly from exhaustion. I stretched in my chair feeling the stress of having pulled and All-Nighter to at least make some sort of dent in my workload. My boss messaged immediately after checking the time.
‘Office now,’ was all that he said. Usually going to his office was about accidentally looking too deep into government business, or it was to hand me more assignments. The thought made me want to throw the piles of work in his face. I logged off my computer making sure all my files were saved and I could pull them up later.
I rubbed my eyes ripping my eyes away from my computer. I was the only one left it seemed in the office. I rarely noticed anymore. I dragged myself down the rows of cubicles to his office not wanting to hear what new task he had in mind for me. I was hoping it was a field mission this time. I was getting antsy just coding all day long. My last mission consisted of posing as a secretary to track important information from a huge company to see who they were dealing with. I creeped into his office and he was standing at the window looking out at the city below. He looked quite distressed than I have seen him before.
“Pierce, you wanted to see me?” I sat down in one of his uncomfortable leather chairs. The ones that were aesthetically pleasing but the hardest piece of furniture in the entire building. Pierce wasn’t his real name. I don’t know anyones real name quite frankly. We all had nicknames to protect our real identity from being exposed.
“Stark”  He said my fake last name very solemnly and monotone.
“I have a new mission for you.” He looked more distressed than usual. In the few months I’ve been in South Korea this was the first time he looked genuinely concerned. He looked pale, and his face sunken in. The expression he wore a furrowed brow a large line across his head and lips pursed to the side as if he was biting his tongue. I became nervous as to what this meeting was actually about.
“I’m assigning you to a field mission. I thought you would be best for this mission due to your experience. However, this is quite a sensitive matter I can only trust to you.” He sat back down at his desk not even taking a moment to look at me arms folded on the table. God, this must be serious.
“What is the case?” I asked fiddling with my hair tie on my wrist out of nerves. Trying not to choke on my words from the flipping of my stomach.
“We recently had a security breach. We were able to stop them before they got too deep into our system. But it seems that they were only looking for a list. The government has a list of potential threats to their cyber security.  More specifically, names of the best hackers in our region.” He looked directly at me his gaze piercing and dark.
“Our sources say that on that list are hackers that could easily break into private servers and have unlimited access to classified information including trade, military locations, and arms dealers. The group that was identified as a group of  terrorists and they will stop at nothing to get their hands on someone to help them break into the governments system.” This was why Pierce looked so troubled. This was a crisis situation.
I felt sick to my stomach. “What does this have to do with me-“ I started before I could finish he cut me off. His hands supporting his head.
“Your name is on the list as a potential target along with several other members from a separate organization. They will more than likely be sending their best people to hunt you down and get you to do what they have unable to access. They are only looking for select group of people with your specific skill set. We tried tracing back their IP address and could only find that they accessed the list on a computer in South Korea. I want you to try to figure out who and what this organization is after.”
“You want me to find them before they find me and before they try and seek out the others.” I clarified for my own understanding.
“We already had an agent killed that was on the list. Their entire family were used as pawns to try and get what they want. That is how the list was obtained, when the agent fought back to stop the download before the entire list could be released. The group were only able to obtain your name and two others that have the ability to hack into government servers. If you don’t do what they ask they will kill you.”
He handed me a letter that was still sealed. “What is this?” I asked curious as to how this sealed letter was going to help me not be hunted down by terrorists who now knew my name, and my face. They would be able to find me in days if I was not careful.
“Your first step for the assignment. I have given you a large amount of funds to help you from an unknown source. However, I cannot risk other agents lives further with implicating our organization.” He wasn’t able to help me much further after this letter and giving me instructions. I would be hunted down by this group, my every move carefully calculated.
“I understand” I said as I peeled away the wax seal to the envelope.
Winter Masquerade
We would like to extend the invitation to join us for a night of celebration. Please dress in formal attire and wear a mask. We hope you will attend the formal event with dancing, music and drinks. Silent auction and photography will be on display, and available for purchase. All donations go to benefit mental health programs and groups around the area.
Sincerely, The R.F.A.
“The R.F.A?” I asked not familiar with this organization before.
“Yes, a prominent foundation of a group of elites, a CEO, an actor, hackers, a photographer, college student, and assistant. An odd bunch of individuals.”
“And you want me to do what exactly?” I asked confused as to how this would help me not get killed.
“I want you to try to get in touch with the RFA to assist us on this case considering that their hackers were also among the names released to the terrorist group. If we intervene before the terrorist group starts hunting you down you have a better chance to stop them. If you want take down their organization from the inside you are going to need some help.”
“I have to find the other hackers at this party. I see now.”
“Once you find someone that is able to put you into contact or meet someone from the RFA get into contact with me and I will do my best to direct you from there. I know this is a lot to process but you have limited amount of time before they come looking for you. I can’t even imagine how you must be feeling about this information.”
“I’m not sure exactly how to sound calm in this situation knowing that they are trying to kill me.”
“I understand, and I’m sorry that you are in such a situation, but we cant let this group have access to this information.”
“What if I can’t get into contact with the hackers? Do you have headshots of the hackers or am I just taking a good guess? I can’t just be asking anyone at this party if they are hackers.”
“I only have their names. Unusual code names ‘Unknown’ and ‘707’ to go off of. If you can’t make contact with someone that knows them try to get into contact with anyone that might have any idea who they are.”
“What if they don’t agree to helping?” I asked wondering how to get someone to help take down an organization with no evidence besides this conversation I am having right now.
“Than the terrorists will have an easier time getting what they want, which must not be allowed.”
“We will of course be following you during this mission without having the terrorists trace it back to us. You have the clear to make decisions independent from this organization. I hope you don’t have to use your gun, but you know what to do if necessary.”
I nodded trying to calm my racing heart. I have never thought about actually having to kill someone that were actively trying to hunt me down.
“Thank you,” I said quietly bowing my head.
“Be safe, we can’t lose one of our best.”
“Yeah I know you need me too much.” Pierce laughed walking me to the door.
“Don’t die.” He said jokingly, but was a surprisingly real possibility now.
“I’ll do my best, however, I’ll haunt this office if anything happens.” I joked back trying to keep a level head.
I could not focus my mind driving home worried I was being followed. This was a huge problem. I have to find the hackers in the RFA and ensure that they work with me to take down their system or at least gather information about what their ultimate plans are. They will ultimately use our families, friends, anyone with a personal relation to us in order for compliance. How hard could it be to find a hacker, we were all the same, mysterious, heroes in the shadows, not wanting to stand out from the crowd. I laughed to myself at the impossibility. I just hoped that the other hackers would be willing to go on a life or death mission to take down a terrorist group, or I was screwed.
__________________________________________________________
I was shaking when I put my key in the apartment door. They could already be here waiting for me. I tried to steady my hand as I opened the door. My hand on my gun that was concealed in my pocket. My heart beating so loudly I couldn’t hear anything else around me. My palms were sweaty from nerves. I was relieved to see my roommate sprawled out on the couch eating pizza rolls and watching the latest episode of her favorite TV series. My finger relaxed against the trigger of my gun and took a deep breath to calm my beating heart. I had to leave before they figure out where I live and do something to my roommate.
“I was worried that you would be trapped at work again!” She said fixing herself on the couch. She paused the TV so she would not miss a minute.
“Catching up on that show again?” I asked and she nodded taking another sip of wine from the now empty bottle sitting on the coffee table. “The show is totally awful but I just watch for Zen. He’s too hot to resist such husband material. He at least makes the show bearable.” I laughed at her. Did that laugh sound forced? I need to play it cool.
“We both got interesting mail today.” She said getting up to go to the kitchen. I put my laptop down at my computer desk and hung my coat up before walking into the kitchen to find her.
“but I never get mail.”
She handed me the letter, “well we both did and from the same people.” I looked at the letter addressed to me. The same envelope with the same curly cursive writing I saw earlier and know exactly what this is. I opened the aged paper and pretended as if I had never seen the invitation before. Amelia waited anxiously for my response.
“Will you come to the party with me?” She asked leaning against my shoulder.
“This is a party?” I told her trying to play along.
“I guess some uppity people throw these huge parties to raise money to donate to other charities. A bunch of different people from different backgrounds all go to drink and have a good time. This year it looks like its more of a club event.”
“How did you get invited?” I asked wondering what the odds were that she also received an invitation.
“My work is sending me to advertise our new line of bracelets. The fair Lady of Bracelets had to be invited.” She said drunkenly in an English accent. She spun around before un-gracefully crashed onto a kitchen chair.
“We should go. Please we need to go out more and you are working yourself to death already. This would be a good time to go find ourselves some rich husbands.”
“I have a lot of work I need to catch up on.” I told her trying to make it seem like a challenge.
“Really? When was the last time we both went out?”
“Umm… A few months ago. Ok, Ok yes I’m a work-a-holic.” I admitted to her, and to myself. Even before getting drafted to take down this organization I rarely made time for myself.
“So let’s go, have a few drinks, flirt with a few guys, dance like nobody is watching, and jump back into the dating scene.” She said looking quite serious about finally dragging me out of the house.
“Ugh Fine! Twist my arm why don’t you?” I told her throwing my hands in the air giving into her persistence. Not that I wasn’t already assigned to go anyways.
“You were going to say yes regardless. Please you want to go I can read you like a book.”
“Maybe you are right,” I laughed. She was right I was an easy read and I set the invitation down on the table.
“Good, tomorrow we go dress shopping. You will actually look like a female who doesn’t spend hours in front of a computer and puts effort into her appearance.”
“Hey! Rude!” I slapped her shoulder with the envelope with the letter still in it playfully. She blocked it easily.
“You will be thanking me later when you let me give you a makeover you deserve, men will flock to you!”
I rolled my eyes at her.
“Oh don’t you worry I’ll turn the geek into a princess for a night. I’m like your fairy god mother except the night doesn’t end at midnight. I will find you a nerdy geek prince sent from the heavens to ask for your hand in marriage.” She smiled to herself grabbing another bottle of wine from the fridge before making her way back to the couch.
She pressed the play button on the TV. Zen was delivering a passionate line to his co-star. “I’m going on a business trip soon and don’t know when I will be back.” I told her sitting next to her on the couch.
“Oh really?” Amelia knew that I couldn’t talk much about my job, and she never really asked questions. She knew that my job was dangerous and never pried into what exactly my line of work was. She looked at me and saw my concerned look on my face.
“That might explain the mysterious trip I am also going on for work to sell the bracelets. Don’t worry I have no idea who you are if anyone asks. But if you need someone to bail you out of jail don’t hesitate to call.” She said casually grabbing the bottle of wine and pouring two glasses and handing it to me.
“In which case we have to make this the best night out.” I told her, smiling. The last night of normalcy before I am on the run for my life.
Amelia held her wine glass up and said, “Now you’re talking.” Clinking my own glass with her own and I quickly threw back the wine as if it was the last drop of alcohol on the planet. If I was going to try to get into contact with two hackers I have no idea who or what they look like I’m going to need liquid courage.

There's also no shortage of software to make your life easier
Backups have become a way of life for me. I backup my critical data every night onto a ZIP disk, and use a set of three in rotation. I have never and will never miss a backup. While I've only had to use them four or five times in as many years, they've been a real life saver each time. Make it a habit. Slapping your forehead saying "I wish, I wish" after the event is no good; trust me!
On top of that I make a more thorough backup once a week onto a CD-R. Other options include FTP storage and backing-up over a network. Look into all of them. Off-site storage is also a good idea. If you're ever unlucky enough to experience either a fire or theft, you may realise the pointlessness of keeping your backups in the same room. Sending or mailing a CD once a month to someone in your family takes minutes and costs almost nothing. If you never use the backups, what have you lost? If the day comes when you do need them, you'll be grateful.
In terms of what to backup, it couldn't be simpler. Imagine that your hard drive has just died, right now, and you can't access any of the information on it. What do you wish you'd backed up? Now's the time to do so. Setting up a good backup system and routine shouldn't take longer than an hour or so. Doing so could save you days of work, chaos and lost income in the future.
If something critical happens to your main machine, and you can't fix it yourself in minutes or hours, what then? Having a separate "spare" machine might be worth looking into. It doesn't have to be a top of the range powerhorse; an old 486 will be enough to at least deal with emails and process orders, while your main machine gets fixed. If you already have one or more in use, then you might want to look into how usable they are as a spare machine. Do you have some way of transferring your backup data into them for instance? A parallel-port ZIP drive is an odd shaped lifesaver, but it does the trick. A little forethought can make the difference between an inconvenience and a full-blown disaster.
There's also no shortage of software to make your life easier. Personally I swear by PowerQuest's Drive Image, which allows me to make a complete image of the whole of my hard drive. If my system dies unexpectedly and can't be fixed, I can use it to restore either a just-installed fresh Windows 2000, or my system as it was one or two months ago. This should take no more than half an hour - think how long it takes to format your hard drive, install the operating system, then all your software. Time and money well spent.
Is Your Web Connection Reliable?
The next link in the chain is your web connection. Almost all my work involves some use of the web. Take away my internet connection and I'm blind, deaf and soon to be broke! Because of this I have a permanent high-speed connection with one of the main phone companies in Finland. I also have a separate account with Wholesale Commercial Floor Scrubbers a different server, that can use my old 56 modem on a regular phone line. It costs me all of $9 a month, but if/when my permanent connection goes down, I can still work - a little slower, but it's certainly usable. I look at it as a very cheap form of insurance.
A few months ago I experienced a real-life nightmare. My website went down one morning; the site was unavailable, and email was getting swallowed-up. That's right - not bouncing, but somehow vanishing. So anyone writing to me assumed I'd received the email but never replied. My server assured me that the problem would be fixed within a few hours. It wasn't, in fact it still wasn't fixed a week later. This problem cost me dearly in time and income. It won't happen again.
I now have a backup site, on a different server. My main site is at sharewarepromotions, but if this ever goes down for any length of time, a letter will go out to all my clients, and everyone who has ever contacted me, telling them to use the shareware-promotions site and email addresses. The site itself isn't yet finished but a basic version is already in place, and the email is fully functional. If I ever need it in an emergency it's there, and I even have the letter ready to go out. I pay around $4 a month for the web space, taking advantage of the low price and reliability available from SWREG.ORG. If I never have to use it, I'll be happy. If my main site goes down, it'll be business as usual, and this time I won't lose any income. Again, a very cheap form of insurance. Be prepared.
A few final common-sense tips. If you have a large number of downloads each day, don't rely on one single location for your files. If they go down, you go down. Also make sure you have the contact details for your server. If your server's site also become unavailable, you won't be able to find their emergency phone number on their site either. Keep these details somewhere safe.
Think through every single problem that could happen, and work out exactly what you'd do if each should actually occur. While the chances of your office being hijacked are fairly remote, the chance of you experiencing some sort of server or hardware problem are high. If the website is a critical component of your business, and your business a main source of your income, then you don't want to wait until the server goes down before looking for a new host and registering a domain name. Be seen, be sold.

KatLast Saturday at 3:31 PM @everyone So, had to go back to the table on the rigging/animation files. It was brought to my attention that because of how far behind the files were behind, version wise, that it was starting to cause issues, so thanks to some help from the find folks over at the Avastar team, I'm getting the files updated and working, to ensure they're compatible with the current stable release (2.79.6). Not sure if I'll get em working with 2.8, but for now this'll keep everything more in line with future content.

Feb 24

PLEASE Tell your friends, your parents, your siblings, or your neighbor! Help us make this Devkit a huge success!
Tumblr media
@everyone Forgot to mention: How do you get the devkit? From the main store of course!
Simply tp in, and poke the orange crystal near the Direwolf vendors. Remember, you MUST already OWN a direwolf, and if you plan to produce content to sell, we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to buy the Fatpack! (Or whichever sizes you're missing).
Also, we understand that some of you likely just recently bought a Direwolf. I will happily reimburse any purchases made in the last TWO WEEKS (February 10th to February 24th), if you or a friend paid full price! I like to do this because this sale was not announced, so no one had any way of knowing.
KatLast Monday at 11:38 PM @everyone One last announcement as a final roundup of information for the evening:
Clothing! The basic direwolf clothing I'd teased a bit ago is now on sale on the main store for 250L, includes a link to download the PSDs so you can customize it to your hearts' content!
Preorder bonuses! I'm working on them! The plush has been nearly ready to go for a while now, but a LOT has gotten in the way. I appreciate everyone's patience. Not to worry, I haven't forgotten about the Hellhound and Frosthound skins I promised as well!
Thank you all for your continued patience and understanding. Its been a long, emotionally challenging road. Years of depression and burnout have crippled my motivation and drive, but each day I find myself standing taller and finding the energy to get shit done. I can't thank you all enough for having my back through all of this. I know I say it a lot, but I mean it--seriously.
Let me know if you encounter any issues with the devkit, clothes, or sale prices on the Direwolves. Love you guys!

Feb 26
KatYesterday at 2:38 PM @everyone Been a couple of days since the devkit went live, so I'm curious to see what everyone's been working on! Is it a custom skin to finally capture your fursona, or are you working on a bad ass mod that's gunna be on everyone's must-have list?
If you've been on the fence about picking up the direwolf, now's the time because We've discounted the Single sizes to 1900L(down from 2500L), and the Fatpack** (typoed) down to 5k from 6k.
Once you own the Direwolf in any format, you're immediately given access to the Devkit, which contains an Animation dummy, a weight copy dummy, and the PSDs, with all shaders and detail layers intact. There's also posed UV dummies, so you can preview your progress directly in Blender, and some inworld ones if you want to preview them using local uploads.
Once you've got the devkit, you're golden! You're welcome to sell whatever you make, as long as you're not just reuploading what's in the kit--your creations must be transformative in some way (new colors, markings, heavily modified geometry, ect).
If you make something, be sure to let myself or @Blau know! We'd love to see it! You can also share it in #traders-forum and let everyone know what you've got coming!
I know its a year later than it should of been, but I can't wait to see what everyone creates for the Direwolf. I'd envisioned so much more for it and I'm deeply sorry for how I handled it. It's been a humbling and sobering experience, and I only hope to improve as time goes on.
Each week we'll promote upcoming new direwolf mods, right here, and in the KZK group in SL! Deadline to be included in this week's promotion is March 2nd! (Direwolf sale ends around a month from now, so you've got time to think it over!)
KatYesterday at 10:56 PM @everyone Please forgive this interruption to your evening.
I'm posting this tonight to ask for help--A family friend is currently going through the battle of her life--Her mother-in-law, who is devoutly conservative, has taken advantage of the court system to take custody of her two daughters--claiming that because she's polyamorous, she's unfit to be a mother--which I know personally to be wrong. Kia is one of the most loving, supportive moms I've ever met, and her daughters are her world.
https://www.gofundme.com/f/u5t7a3-help-keep-this-family-together?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link-tip&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet
If you're able to spare a few dollars to assist them in retaining a lawyer to fight the court and get her daughters back, It'd mean the world to them.
Thank you all for your time and understanding.

He was always so uplifting and happy. he had a history with drug abuse and drug related crimes, and would often send me art he drew in prison. and now hes gone.
Just.. take today to call your loved ones. Tell em how much you love them. ok?
I might be slow to answer over the next couple of days, i hope you all will understand.

Let’s look at how you can create an 11-step social media marketing strategy of your own:
1. Set Your Social Media Goals
To set your social media goals, you want to think about what you want to accomplish and create a goal that is SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.) Different businesses will have different goals, so consider your options and let your goals guide the rest of your strategy.
Here are a five general social media goals to use as a starting point:
Increase brand awareness: This is good for newer businesses that are trying to make their brand more well-known through growing and engaging a social media following.
Generate new leads: If you’re looking for new leads, you can use social media to get email subscribers, event registrants, and new leads.
Drive website traffic: If your business wants to increase traffic to blog posts or product pages on your website, you can share links on social media to drive traffic back to your site.
Increase online sales: If you have an e-commerce business, you can use social media to run promotions and ads to increase sales.
Strengthen customer support: If your business needs a central place to address customer questions and concerns, you can use social media as your hub to interact with customers online.
Consider the goals above and choose one or two goals that will be most beneficial to your business. Then make the goal stronger by applying it directly to your business. A strong goal includes a number and a time frame. For example, a jewelry store might want to use social media to increase their online sales by 20 percent in December. A marketing consultant’s goal might be to drive 100 new leads in three weeks by promoting their upcoming webinar on social media.
Start by identifying one to three goals for your social media efforts. You can use our template to list your goals so you can reference them as you continue to build your strategy.
2. Determine Which Social Media Channels Are Right for You
Choosing the right social media channels starts with understanding your target audience and which social networks they are most likely to use. The social media channels you choose to focus on should also be well-suited to your goals. For example, if you are a B2B looking to get generate more leads, LinkedIn is a good channel to focus on.
If you’re brand new to social media, it’s absolutely fine to focus on just one channel initially and grow a presence there first. Facebook or Instagram is often the best place to start. As you get more comfortable, you may want to expand to a few more networks to reach more of your audience if they use additional channels.
When deciding which channels to develop a presence on, think about your customers and your competitors. What are your customer demographics? Which channels are they likely to use? If you need help digging into your target audience, we have a customer profile template to help you create a thorough description of your ideal customer.
As for your competitors, run a Google search of their business name to see if any social media pages pop up. Then visit your competitors’ websites to see if they have buttons to any social media sites. If your competitors have followings on social channels, you probably should too.
Take some time to familiarize yourself with the major social media channels, each channel’s key demographic, and what it’s best for. The main social media channels you need to consider are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, and Snapchat.
Social Media Channel Overview

3. Set Up Your Social Media Accounts
Now take a few minutes to sign up for your accounts. This will probably be the easiest step on this list. All major social media channels are free to set up, and most make it easy right from their homepage. Some networks, like Facebook, require a personal account before you set up a Page for your business.
Here are the links you need:
Facebook: To create a Facebook business page, you need to create a personal profile first. Creating your account is possible in a matter of seconds.
Twitter: Creating an account will require you choose a Twitter handle, but don’t overthink this step. You will be able to update your handle if you want to later on.
Instagram: Download the Instagram app on your mobile device to set up your account. Select a business account for better recognition and analytics.
LinkedIn: Create a personal account first so you can easily create a Company page for your business.
Pinterest: Make sure to create a business account (or convert your personal account to a business account) so you can run Pinterest ads in the future.
YouTube: YouTube is owned by Google, so you’ll need a Google account first. Then you can visit YouTube and customize your page with your business information.
Snapchat: Download the Snapchat app on your mobile device. Note that you can’t change your username on Snapchat, so use a handle that will be recognizable as your business.
While all of these social media platforms can be accessed through a web browser, Instagram and Snapchat are both primarily mobile apps. All other major networks also have mobile app versions that are worth downloading so that you can access your channels on the go.
At this point, you only have to sign up for your accounts. Don’t worry about filling in any additional information yet. There is a little research and analysis you should do first to make sure you’re setting up your pages for success.
4. Analyze the Competition
Before diving into posting content, take a little bit of time to research your competition and analyze their approach. Take note of how many followers or Likes they have, what content they’re posting, how often they’re posting, and how many Likes and Comments they’re getting on average. Pay attention to how they are positioning their business on social media so you can do something similar or intentionally different to stand out.
List a few things you like about their account and a few things you think you could do better. This analysis can provide some good inspiration for how you want to approach your social media channels and what benchmarks you can set for your own accounts.
If you don’t have any direct competitors, just try to find a few accounts that are in an industry similar to yours. Again, you can use our Social Media Strategy Template to keep track of your findings.
5. Build Your Initial Presence
Building your initial presence means filling out your business information, adding a few images, and creating your first post. Don’t try to start building a following until you have a strong foundation and you’ve filled out all the basic information on your page. Most channels do a good job of walking you through the necessary steps.
Here’s a summary of general steps you should take:
Enter your business information: Provide an overview of your business, your contact details, and a link to your website.
Upload images: You probably want your profile image to be something recognizable, like your logo or a headshot. Make sure your images are the proper sizes and display well on desktop and mobile views.
Create your first post: Make sure people who arrive on your page get a good first impression. Your first post can be something simple like Welcome to the [business name] Facebook Page! Like our Page for [type of content you will provide].
Follow your contacts: Start with your most loyal customers who you know will Like and Follow your new account. Most social channels have recommended contacts that make good first connections.
If you want to make sure your new social media page is set up correctly, you can outsource this task to a social media consultant. Fiverr is the perfect platform for finding low-cost freelancers for one-off tasks. They have social media experts who specialize in page setup and will help you for as little as $5.
  6. Create a Social Media Schedule
A social media schedule is a set calendar of content ideas to help you consistently post quality content on social media, which is key to achieving your goals and growing your following. Social media is all about consistency, so ideally you are dedicating about 15 to 20 minutes each day to social media to post and interact with your followers on a daily basis.
To start, make a list of all the different types of content you’d like to share on an ongoing basis. Keep in mind that you don’t want all your content to be self-serving and promotional. A common social media best practice is to follow the 80/20 rule, which means 80 percent of your content is useful, educational, or entertaining and 20 percent is sales-driven.
For example, a yoga studio might want to post a mix of content that includes motivational quotes, 30-second video tips from their instructors, links to their weekly class schedule, helpful articles, discounts for new members, and photos from their recent classes.
Once you have a few different content ideas, start plugging these ideas into a simple calendar. CoSchedule has marketing calendar tools that make it really easy to stay organized. You can add all your social media, email marketing, and blog writing to a centralized calendar to stay on track:
You don’t have to post on social media every day and it’s OK to reuse some content if you’re active on multiple channels. However, you want to make sure each network has its own unique value and that you’re interacting with customers on a regular basis.
With 67 percent of consumers now using social media as a customer service channel, make sure you are communicating with your audience in a timely manner. To stay on top of your posting schedule and incoming messages, look into using a social media management tool to help you stay organized and save time. There are a lot of options, including tools with free versions like Buffer or Hootsuite.
7. Promote Your Social Channels
Promoting your social media channels means getting the word out about your new channels so more people will follow you. It is the best way to grow your following so that all your posts are seen by as many people as possible. You probably have more places to promote your social media channels than you think, and many of them won’t cost anything to make an impact.
Here are some places you can promote your channels:
Your website: Add buttons to your social channels so website visitors can easily find your social accounts.
Your email list: Once you launch your social accounts, let your email list know. Then, include buttons to your social channels in the footer of every marketing email.
Your email signature: Add social media links to your business email’s signature.
Send an email to your staff: Encourage your staff to follow your social media channels and invite their audience to do the same.
In-store signage: Put up signage in your store with your social media handle or URL.
Your other social media channel: Encourage your audience to follow you on multiple channels.
Social advertisements: You can run an ad to get in front of new audience members.
8. Measure Your Results
Your results will show you how your social media efforts are paying off and how you’re stacking up against your goals. You’ll be able to see how many followers you’ve gained, how much traffic you’re driving to your website, and how much engagement your posts are receiving. All major social media networks give you access to metrics through their analytics platforms. If you decide to use a social media management tool, it will also likely have analytics available for you to use.
Let’s review some common metrics that should come in handy:
Followers/Likes – Shows the size of your social media audience
Reach – Shows how many people are actually seeing your social media posts
Engagements – The number of Likes, Comments, and Shares your content is receiving
Clicks – The number of times your posts are clicked on
If you’re posting multiple posts a week, you’ll have a lot of data to review. Look at your overall performance on at least a monthly basis, as well as individual post performance statistics about once a week. Over time, you’ll learn more about what type of content drives the best results for your specific goal, which will help you spend time on the things that really drive interest and action.
9. Optimize for the Best Performance
Once you have some data in your back pocket, you should be able to apply some learnings to your posting schedule and optimize for the best performance. Look at what’s getting your business the most clicks, impressions, and engagements, and then tweak your schedule incorporate more of these types of posts. For example, if your yoga studio sees a lot of engagement on videos, you may want to experiment with creating more videos on channels like Facebook Live, Instagram Stories, or YouTube.
Optimization is what will really help you meet and exceed your goals. If you’re having trouble getting the audience growth or engagement you’re looking for, you may have to try some brand new ideas. Maybe it’s time to try a paid ad to get in front of a new targeted audience. Look into adding hashtags to your posts to increase reach. Or, try posting a survey or poll to ask your followers directly what they are interested in seeing from your business.
Metrics can tell you a lot about how to optimize your content, but sometimes the best optimization comes from direct one-on-one conversations with your customers. Don’t underestimate the power of understanding your target audience and providing them with valuable or entertaining content.
The Concord Cheese Shop shows they understand what content resonates with their audience by posting a fun article about the benefits of red wine. The article resulted in 132 reactions and over 60 shares.
If you want to try something new on social media, like create a video, but you don’t have the resources to do it in-house, consider finding a social media consultant to help you. Fiverr has freelancers who specialize in everything, including creating images and videos, performing hashtag research, and provide recommendations for your strategy. Freelancers on Fiverr can help you out for as little as $5.
“Before we outsourced our social media, between myself and my office manager, we were sacrificing time and energy updating statuses and building posts, rather than doing our real work that directly drives our business forward. Outsourcing our social media gave our staff the opportunity to fully dedicate themselves to their true roles.”
— Eric Hobbs, CEO, Technology Associates
10. Run Promotions for Your Products and Services
After growing your initial following, social media promotions are a great way to get your products or services in front of a larger audience and generate some sales. Before spending money on social media advertisements, try posting a timely and compelling offer to your channels. Be sure to use a compelling image to draw your audience in.
Door County Coffee & Tea Company does an excellent job with their 25th Anniversary promotion. The promotion is timely in celebration of their anniversary. They write clear and compelling copy with all the offer details. Lastly, they include a color image with the discount prominently featured so it will jump out to anyone scrolling through their feed quickly.
Your social promotions should be clear, compelling, and easy to act on. If your sale is running over a couple weeks, it’s also fine to post about it more than once. Urgency is an important element of a successful promotion, so be sure to post about your sale in its last 24 hours.
Test promotions regularly to see which offers result in the most sales. Just make sure to keep that 80/20 split, with 80 percent of your content focused on providing value and 20 percent promotional. That way, your audience won’t feel inundated with sales-driven content and they’ll be more willing to make purchases from you.
11. Run Ads on Social Media
All the major social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat, and YouTube) have social advertising features to help grow your sales and audience size. You don’t necessarily have to run social media ads for your business. However, if you are looking to promote your product or service to reach a new audience, social media ads are a great way to increase your reach. If you have a product or service, revisit the successful organic promotions you’ve run in the past and think about how you can reuse the successful elements of this offer in your paid promotion.
Here are a few different examples of social media ads you can run:
Storewide discounts – Give your audience complete freedom to choose the product or service they want to purchase at a discounted price.
New product promotions – Drive awareness and sales for new products by featuring them in an ad.
New customer deals – Target non-customers with your social media ads and give them an incentive to make the first purchase with you.
E-book downloads – Show your industry expertise and grow your following by promoting your e-book to a targeted audience.
Webinar/event promotions – Increase attendance for your online or offline event by promoting an invite to your upcoming event.
Giveaways – Spark some interest in your business by promoting a free giveaway. You can link to a sweepstakes landing page, collect contact details, and choose a winner.
To really make money on most social media channels, you typically have to spend money on paid ad campaigns. Paid ads help you reach a larger audience, especially because social media algorithms limit how many of your existing followers see your organic (or free) promotions.
Each platform has its own advertising features, but there are a few things you can do to get the most out of your ads on any network:
Target Ads for Your Audience
Set up your ad campaigns so they reach an audience that is relevant to your business. Each platform has its own targeting features, but many allow you to target audience members based on demographics, locations, expressed interest, or behavior. Spend some time refining your desired audience before publishing any advertisement.
Create Multiple Versions of Your Ad
With a new audience, it’s hard to know what’s going to perform the best. When running an ad campaign, you want to create multiple versions of your ad with some slight variations. It may be easiest to start with two versions of an ad so you can run a simple A/B test. Then, tweak the more successful ad by testing out different offers, creative, and copy to see what is performing the best.
If you want help creating multiple version of your ad, consider finding a social media consultant on Fiverr to help create multiple ad versions. This is the best way to test quickly so that you can see what types of copy, images, and offers will work the best.
Optimize for a Specific Metric
Once you run your ad, check on your results on a daily basis. You will want to tweak your approach to make sure you’re not wasting money on poor-performing ads. When optimizing your ads, make sure you’re focusing on one specific metric. Is your goal to have a ton of reach or to drive clicks to your website? Before making any changes to your ad, consider which ad versions are helping you reach your desired end result.
Consider Outsourcing Your Advertising
A lot of effort goes into a successful advertising campaign. You may decide that you’d prefer to hand off your advertising to an agency that is more likely to get you a good return on your investment. If you decide to outsource, look for an agency that specializes in working with small businesses, like Hibu.
Hibu offers small businesses comprehensive Facebook advertising management, including campaign setup, ad optimization, and reporting. Their Facebook advertising services start at $250 per month, and they will create ads to appear in the Facebook News Feed, on Facebook Messenger, Marketplace, and Instagram.
  Bottom Line: Social Media Strategy
If creating a social media marketing strategy seems intimidating, focus on taking one small step at a time. You don’t have to do everything all at once, but if you take the time to create a plan with clear goals, a consistent content schedule, and regular analysis, you’ll develop an engaged audience that’s eager to purchase your products and services.
Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. If you’d prefer to hire a social media consultant to set you up for success and develop a personalized plan for you, look into finding an expert on Fiverr. Fiverr has hundreds of social media experts available for inexpensive, one-off jobs starting at $5.

The Cost of JavaScript in 2018
Building interactive sites can involve sending JavaScript to your users. Often, too much of it. Have you been on a mobile page that looked like it had loaded only to tap on a link or tried to scroll and nothing happens?
Byte-for-byte, JavaScript is still the most expensive resource we send to mobile phones, because it can delay interactivity in large ways.
JavaScript processing times for CNN.com as measured by WebPageTest (src). A high-end phone (iPhone 8) processes script in ~4s. Compare to the ~13s an average phone (Moto G4) takes or the ~36s taken by a low-end 2018 phone (Alcatel 1X).
Today we’ll cover some strategies you can use to deliver JavaScript efficiently while still giving users a valuable experience.
tl;dr:
To stay fast, only load JavaScript needed for the current page. Prioritize what a user will need and lazy-load the rest with code-splitting. This gives you the best chance at loading and getting interactive fast. Stacks with route-based code-splitting by default are game-changers.
Embrace performance budgets and learn to live within them. For mobile, aim for a JS budget of < 170KB minified/compressed. Uncompressed this is still ~0.7MB of code. Budgets are critical to success, however, they can’t magically fix perf in isolation. Team culture, structure and enforcement matter. Building without a budget invites performance regressions and failure.
Learn how to audit and trim your JavaScript bundles. There’s a high chance you’re shipping full-libraries when you only need a fraction, polyfills for browsers that don’t need them, or duplicate code.
Every interaction is the start of a new ‘Time-to-Interactive’; consider optimizations in this context. Transmission size is critical for low-end mobile networks and JavaScript parse time for CPU-bound devices.
If client-side JavaScript isn’t benefiting the user-experience, ask yourself if it’s really necessary. Maybe server-side-rendered HTML would actually be faster. Consider limiting the use of client-side frameworks to pages that absolutely require them. Server-rendering and client-rendering are a disaster if done poorly.
Video for my recent talk on “The Cost of JavaScript” on which this write-up is based.
The web is bloated by user “experience”
When users access your site you’re probably sending down a lot of files, many of which are scripts. From a web browsers’ perspective this looks a little bit like this:
A mad rush of files being thrown at you.
As much as I love JavaScript, it’s always the most expensive part of your site. I’d like to explain why this can be a major issue.
The median webpage today currently ships about 350 KB of minified and compressed JavaScript. Uncompressed, that bloats up to over 1MB of script a browser needs to process.
Note: Unsure if your JavaScript bundles are delaying how quickly users interact with your site? Check out Lighthouse.
Statistics from the HTTP Archive state of JavaScript report, July 2018 highlight the median webpage ships ~350KB of minified and compressed script. These pages take up to 15s to get interactive.
Experiences that ship down this much JavaScript take more than 14+ seconds to load and get interactive on mobile devices.
A large factor of this is how long it takes to download code on a mobile network and then process it on a mobile CPU.
Let’s look at mobile networks.
Countries that perform better in a particular metric are shaded darker. Countries not included are in grey. It’s also worth noting that rural broadband speeds, even in the US, can be 20% slower than urban areas.
This chart from OpenSignal shows how consistently 4G networks are globally available and the average connection speed users in each country experience. As we can see, many countries still experience lower connection speeds than we may think.
Not only can that 350 KB of script for a median website from earlier take a while to download, the reality is if we look at popular sites, they actually ship down a lot more script than this:
Uncompressed JS bundle size numbers from “Bringing Facebook.com and the web up to speed”. Sites like Google Sheets are highlighted as shipping up to 5.8MB of script (when decompressed).
We’re hitting this ceiling across both desktop and mobile web, where sites are sometimes shipping multiple megabytes-worth of code that a browser then needs to process. The question to ask is, can you afford this much JavaScript?
JavaScript has a cost
“Sites with this much script are simply inaccessible to a broad swath of the world’s users; statistically, users do not (and will not) wait for these experiences to load” — Alex Russell
Note: If you’re sending too much script, consider code-splitting to break up bundles or reducing JS payloads using tree-shaking.
Sites today will often send the following in their JS bundles:
A client-side framework or UI library
A state management solution (e.g. Redux)
Polyfills (often for modern browsers that don’t need them)
Full libraries vs. only what they use (e.g. all of lodash, Moment + locales)
A suite of UI components (buttons, headers, sidebars etc.)
This code adds up. The more there is, the longer it will take for a page to load.
Loading a web page is like a film strip that has three key moments.
There’s: Is it happening? Is it useful? And, is it usable?
Loading is a journey. We’re shifting to increasing caring about user-centric happiness metrics. Rather than just looking at onload or domContentLoaded, we now ask “when can a user actually *use* the page?”. If they tap on a piece of user-interface, does it respond right away?
Is it happening is the moment you’re able to deliver some content to the screen. (has the navigation started? has the server started responding?)
Is it useful is the moment when you’ve painted text or content that allows the user to derive value from the experience and engage with it.
And then is it usable is the moment when a user can start meaningfully interacting with the experience and have something happen.
I mentioned this term “‘interactive” earlier, but what does that mean?
A visualization of Time-to-Interactive highlighting how a poorly loaded experience makes the user think they can accomplish a goal, when in fact, the page hasn’t finished loading all of the code necessary for this to be true. With thanks to Kevin Schaaf for the interactivity animation
For a page to be interactive, it must be capable of responding quickly to user input. A small JavaScript payload can ensure this happens fast.
Whether a user clicks on a link, or scrolls through a page, they need to see that something is actually happening in response to their actions. An experience that can’t deliver on this will frustrate your users.
Lighthouse measures a range of user-centric performance metrics, like Time-to-Interactive, in a lab setting.
One place this commonly happens is when folks server-side render an experience, and then ship a bunch of JavaScript down afterward to “hydrate” the interface (attaching event handlers and extra behaviors).
When a browser runs many of the events you’re probably going to need, it’s likely going to do it on the same thread that handles user input. This thread is called the main thread.
Loading too much JavaScript into the main thread (via <script>, etc) is the issue. Pulling JS into a Web Worker or caching via a Service Worker doesn’t have the same negative Time-to-Interactive impact.
Here’s an example where a user may tap around some UI. Ordinarily, they might check a checkbox or click a link and everything’s going to work perfectly fine. But if we simulate blocking the main thread, nothing’s able to happen. They are not able to check that checkbox or click links because the main thread is blocked.
Avoid blocking the main thread as much as possible. For more, see “Why web developers need to care about interactivity”
We’re seeing teams we partner with suffer JavaScript impacting interactivity across many types of sites.
JavaScript can delay interactivity for visible elements. Visualized are a number of UI elements from Google Search where
Too much (main thread) JavaScript can delay interactivity for visible elements. This can be a challenge for many companies.
Above are a few examples from Google Search where you could start tapping around the UI, but if a site is shipping too much JavaScript down, there could be a delay before something actually happens. This can leave the user feeling a bit frustrated. Ideally, we want all experiences to get interactive as soon as possible.
Time-to-Interactive of news.google.com as measured by WebPageTest and Lighthouse (source)
Measuring the Time-to-Interactive of Google News on mobile, we observe large variance between a high-end getting interactive in ~7s vs. a low-end device getting interactive in 55s. So, what is a good target for interactivity?
When it comes to Time to Interactive, we feel your baseline should be getting interactive in under five seconds on a slow 3G connection on a median mobile device. “But, my users are all on fast networks and high-end phones!” …are they? You may be on “fast” coffee-shop WiFi but effectively only getting 2G or 3G speeds. Variability matters.
Who has shipped less JavaScript and reduced their Time-to-Interactive?
Pinterest reduced their JavaScript bundles from 2.5MB to < 200KB and Time-to-Interactive reduced from 23s to 5.6s. Revenue went up 44%, sign-ups are up 753%, weekly active users on mobile web are up 103%.
AutoTrader reduced their JavaScript bundle sizes by 56% and reduced Time-to-Interactive for their pages by ~50%.
Nikkei reduced their JavaScript bundle size by 43% and Time-to-Interactive improved by 14s.
Let’s design for a more resilient mobile web that doesn’t rely as heavily on large JavaScript payloads.
Interactivity impacts a lot of things. It can be impacted by a person loading your website on a mobile data plan, or coffee shop WiFi, or just them being on the go with intermittent connectivity.
When this happens, and you have a lot of JavaScript that needs to be processed, users can end up waiting for the site to actually render anything. Or, if something does render, they can be waiting a long time before they can interact with anything on the page. Ideally, shipping less JavaScript would alleviate these issues.
Why is JavaScript so expensive?
To explain how JavaScript can have such a large cost, I’d like to walk you through what happens when you send content to a browser. A user types a URL into the browser’s address bar:
A request is sent to a server which then returns some markup. The browser then parses that markup and discovers the necessary CSS, JavaScript, and images. Then, the browser has to fetch and process all of those resources.
The above scenario is an accurate depiction of what happens in Chrome when it processes everything that you send down (yes, it’s a giant emoji factory).
One of the challenges here is that JavaScript ends up being a bottleneck. Ideally, we want to be able to paint pixels quickly, and then have the page interactive. But if JavaScript is a bottleneck, you can end up just looking at something that you can’t actually interact with.
We want to prevent JavaScript from being a bottleneck to modern experiences.
One thing to keep in mind as an industry is that, if we want to be fast at JavaScript, we have to download it, parse it, compile it, and execute it quickly.
That means we have to be fast at the network transmission and the processing side of things for our scripts.
If you spend a long time parsing and compiling script in a JavaScript engine, that delays how soon a user can interact with your experience.
To provide some data about this, here’s a breakdown of where V8 (Chrome’s JavaScript engine) spends its time while it processes a page containing script:
JavaScript parse/compile = 10–30% of the time spent in V8 (Chrome’s JS engine) during page load
The orange represents all the time spent parsing JavaScript that popular sites are sending down. In yellow, is the time spent compiling. Together, these take anywhere up to 30% of the time it takes to process the JavaScript for your page — this is a real cost.
As of Chrome 66, V8 compiles code on a background thread, reducing compile time by up to 20%. But parse and compile are still very costly and it’s rare to see a large script actually execute in under 50ms, even if compiled off-thread.
Another thing to keep in mind with JavaScript is that all bytes are not equal. A 200 KB script and a 200 KB image have very different costs.
Not all bytes weigh the same. A 200KB script has a very different set of costs to a 200KB JPG outside of the raw network transmission times for both sets of bytes.
They might take the same amount of time to download, but when it comes to processing we’re dealing with very different costs.
A JPEG image needs to be decoded, rasterized, and painted on the screen. A JavaScript bundle needs to be downloaded and then parsed, compiled, executed —and there are a number of other steps that an engine needs to complete. Just be aware that these costs are not quite equivalent.
One of the reasons why they start to add up and matter is mobile.
Mobile is a spectrum.
Mobile is a spectrum composed of cheap/low-end, median and high-end devices.
If we’re fortunate, we may have a high-end or median end phone. The reality is that not all users will have those devices.
They may be on a low-end or median phone, and the disparity between these multiple classes of devices can be quite stark due too; thermal throttling, difference in cache sizes, CPU, GPU — you can end up experiencing quite different processing times for resources like JavaScript, depending on the device you’re using. Your users on low-end phones may even be in the U.S.
“Insights into the 2.3 Billion Android Smartphones” by newzoo. Android has a 75.9% share of the global market with a predicted 300m more smartphones joining the market in 2018. Many of these will be budget Android devices.
Here’s a breakdown of how long it takes to parse JavaScript across a spectrum of hardware available in 2018:
Processing (parse/compile) times for 1MB of uncompressed JavaScript (<200KB minified and gzipped) manually profiled on real devices. (src)
At the top we have high-end devices, like the iPhone 8, which process script relatively quickly. Lower down we have more average phones like the Moto G4 and the <$100 Alcatel 1X. Notice the difference in processing times?
Android phones are getting cheaper, not faster, over time. These devices are frequently CPU poor with tiny L2/L3 cache sizes. You are failing your average users if you’re expecting them to all have high-end hardware.
Let’s look at a more practical version of this problem using script from a real-world site. Here’s the JS processing time for CNN.com:
JavaScript processing times for CNN.com via WebPageTest (src)
On an iPhone 8 (using the A11 chip) it takes nine seconds less to process CNN’s JavaScript than it does on an average phone. That’s nine seconds quicker that experience could get interactive.
Now that WebPageTest supports the Alcatel 1X (~$100 phone sold in the U.S, sold out at launch) we can also look at filmstrips for CNN loading on mid-lower end hardware. Slow doesn’t even begin to describe this:
Comparison of loading CNN.com, a JavaScript-heavy site, over 3G on mid-lower end hardware (source). The Alcatel 1X takes 65s to fully load.
This hints that maybe we need to stop taking fast networks and fast devices for granted.
Some users are not going to be on a fast network or have the latest and greatest phone, so it’s vital that we start testing on real phones and real networks . Variability is a real issue.
“Variability is what kills the User Experience” — Ilya Grigorik. Fast devices can actually sometimes be slow. Fast networks can be slow, variability can end up making absolutely everything slow.
When variance can kill the user experience, developing with a slow baseline ensures everyone (both on fast and slow setups) benefits. If your team can take a look at their analytics and understand exactly what devices your users are actually accessing your site with, that’ll give you a hint at what devices you should probably have in the office to test your site with.
Test on real phones & networks.
webpagetest.org/easy has a number of Moto G4 preconfigured under the “Mobile” profiles. This is valuable in case you’re unable to purchase your own set of median-class hardware for testing.
There’s a number of profiles set up there that you can use today that already have popular devices pre-configured. For example, we’ve got some median mobile devices like the Moto G4 ready for testing.
It’s also important to test on representative networks. Although I’ve talked about how important low end and median phones are, Brian Holt made this great point: it’s really important to know your audience.
“Knowing your audience and then appropriately focusing the performance of your application is critical” — Brian Holt (src)
Not every site needs to perform well on 2G on a low-end phone. That said, aiming for a high level of performance across the entire spectrum is not a bad thing to do.
Google Analytics > Audience > Mobile > Devices visualizes what devices & operating systems visit your site.
You may have a wide range of users on the higher end of the spectrum, or in a different part of the spectrum. Just be aware of the data behind your sites, so that you can make a reasonable call on how much all of this matters.
If you want JavaScript to be fast, pay attention to download times for low end networks. The improvements you can make there are: ship less code, minify your source, take advantage of compression (i.e., gzip, Brotli, and Zopfli).
Take advantage of caching for repeat visits. Parse time is critical for phones with slow CPUs.
If you’re a back-end or full stack developer, you know that you kind of get what you pay for with respect to CPU, disk, and network.
As we build sites that are increasingly more reliant on JavaScript, we sometimes pay for what we send down in ways that we don’t always easily see.
How to send less JavaScript
The shape of success is whatever let’s us send the least amount of script to users while still giving them a useful experience. Code-splitting is one option that makes this possible.
Splitting large, monolithic JavaScript bundles can be done on a page, route or component basis. You’re even better setup for success if “splitting” is the default for your toolchain from the get-go.
Code-splitting is this idea that, instead of shipping down your users a massive monolithic JavaScript bundle — sort of like a massive full pizza — what if you were to just send them one slice at a time? Just enough script needed to make the current page usable.
Code-splitting can be done at the page level, route level, or component level. It’s something that’s well supported by many modern libraries and frameworks through bundlers like webpack and Parcel. Guides to accomplish this are available for React, Vue.js and Angular.
Adding code-splitting in a React app using React Loadable — a higher-order component that wraps dynamic imports in a React-friendly API for adding code-splitting to your app at a given component.
Many large teams have seen big wins off the back of investing in code-splitting recently.
In an effort to rewrite their mobile web experiences to try to make sure users were able to interact with their sites as soon as possible, both Twitter and Tinder saw anywhere up to a 50% improvement in their Time to Interactive when they adopted aggressive code splitting.
Stacks like Gatsby.js (React), Preact CLI, and PWA Starter Kit attempt to enforce good defaults for loading & getting interactive quickly on average mobile hardware.
Another thing many of these sites have done is adopted auditing as part of their workflow.
Audit your JavaScript bundles regularly. Tools like webpack-bundle-analyzer are great for analyzing your built JavaScript bundles and import-cost for Visual Code is excellent for visualizing expensive dependencies during your local iteration workflow (e.g. when you `npm install` and import a package)
Thankfully, the JavaScript ecosystem has a number of great tools to help with bundle analysis.
Tools like Webpack Bundle Analyzer, Source Map Explorer and Bundle Buddy allow you to audit your bundles for opportunities to trim them down.
These tools visualize the content of your JavaScript bundles: they highlight large libraries, duplicate code, and dependencies you may not need.
From “Put your Webpack bundle on a diet” by Benedikt Rötsch
Bundle auditing often highlights opportunities to swap heavy dependencies (like Moment.js and its locales) for lighter alternatives (such as date-fns).
If you use webpack, you may find our repository of common library issues in bundles useful.
Measure, Optimize, Monitor, and Repeat.
If you’re unsure whether you have any issues with JavaScript performance in general, check out Lighthouse:
Lighthouse recently added a number of useful new performance audits that you may not be aware of.
Lighthouse is a tool baked into the Chrome Developer Tools. It’s also available as a Chrome extension. It gives you an in-depth performance analysis that highlights opportunities to improve performance.
We’ve recently added support for flagging high “JavaScript boot-up time” to Lighthouse. This audit highlights scripts which might be spending a long time parsing/compiling, which delays interactivity. You can look at this audit as opportunities to either split up those scripts, or just be doing less work there.
Another thing you can do is make sure you’re not shipping unused code down to your users:
Find unused CSS and JS code with the Coverage tab in Chrome DevTools.
Code coverage is a feature in DevTools that allows you to discover unused JavaScript (and CSS) in your pages. Load up a page in DevTools and the coverage tab will display how much code was executed vs. how much was loaded. You can improve the performance of your pages by only shipping the code a user needs.
Tip: With coverage recording, you can interact with your app and DevTools will update how much of your bundles were used.
This can be valuable for identifying opportunities to split up scripts and defer the loading of non-critical ones until they’re needed.
If you’re looking for a pattern for serving JavaScript efficiently to your users, check out the PRPL pattern.
PRPL is a performance pattern for efficient loading. It stands for (P)ush critical resources for the initial route, (R)ender initial route, (P)re-cache remaining routes, (L)azy-load and create remaining routes on demand
PRPL (Push, Render, Precache and Lazy-Load) is a pattern for aggressively splitting code for every single route, then taking advantage of a service worker to pre-cache the JavaScript and logic needed for future routes, and lazy load it as needed.
What this means is that when a user navigates to other views in the experience, there’s a good chance it’s already in the browser cache, and so they experience much more reduced costs in terms of booting scripts up and getting interactive.
If you care about performance or you’ve ever worked on a performance patch for your site, you know that sometimes you could end up working on a fix, only to come back a few weeks later and find someone on your team was working on a feature and unintentionally broke the experience. It goes a little like this:
Thankfully, there are ways we can we can try to work around this, and one way is having a performance budget in place.
Performance budgets are critical because they keep everybody on the same page. They create a culture of shared enthusiasm for constantly improving the user experience and team accountability.
Budgets define measurable constraints to allow a team to meet their performance goals. As you have to live within the constraints of budgets, performance is a consideration at each step, as opposed to an after-thought.
Based on the work by Tim Kadlec, metrics for perf budgets can include:
Milestone timings — timings based on the user-experience loading a page (e.g Time-to-Interactive). You’ll often want to pair several milestone timings to accurately represent the complete story during page load.
Quality-based metrics — based on raw values (e.g. weight of JavaScript, number of HTTP requests). These are focused on the browser experience.
Rule-based metrics — scores generated by tools such as Lighthouse or WebPageTest. Often, a single number or series to grade your site.
Alex Russell had a tweet-storm about performance budgets with a few salient points worth noting:
“Leadership buy-in is important. The willingness to put feature work on hold to keep the overall user experience good defines thoughtful management of technology products.”
“Performance is about culture supported by tools. Browsers optimize HTML+CSS as much as possible. Moving more of your work into JS puts the burden on your team and their tools”
“Budgets aren’t there to make you sad. They’re there to make the organization self-correct. Teams need budgets to constrain decision space and help hitting them”
Everyone who impacts the user-experience of a site has a relationship to how it performs.
Make performance part of the conversation.
Performance is more often a cultural challenge than a technical one.
Discuss performance during planning sessions and other get-togethers. Ask business stakeholders what their performance expectations are. Do they understand how perf can impact the business metrics they care about? Ask eng. teams how they plan to address perf bottlenecks. While the answers here can be unsatisfactory, they get the conversation started.
“Make performance relevant to your stakeholders’ goals by showing how it can impact the key metrics they care about. Without a performance culture, performance is not sustainable” — Allison McKnight
Here’s an action plan for performance: - Create your performance vision. This is a one-page agreement on what business stakeholders and developers consider “good performance” - Set your performance budgets. Extract key performance indicators (KPIs) from the vision and set realistic, measurable targets from them. e.g. “Load and get interactive in 5s”. Size budgets can fall out of this. e.g “Keep JS < 170KB minified/compressed” - Create regular reports on KPIs. This can be a regular report sent out to the business highlighting progress and success.
Web Performance Warrior by Andy Still and Designing for Performance by Lara Hogan are both excellent books that discuss how to think about getting a performance culture in place.
What about tooling for perf budgets? You can setup Lighthouse scoring budgets in continuous integration with the Lighthouse CI project:
Prevent pull requests from being merged if your perf scores fall below a certain value with Lighthouse CI. Lighthouse Thresholds is another configuration-based approach to setting perf budgets.
A number of performance monitoring services support setting perf budgets and budget alerts including Calibre, Treo, Webdash and SpeedCurve:
JavaScript perf budgets for my site teejungle.net using SpeedCurve which supports a range of budget metrics.
Embracing performance budgets encourages teams to think seriously about the consequences of any decisions they make from early on in the design phases right through to the end of a milestone.
Looking for further reference? The U.S Digital Service document their approach to tracking performance with Lighthouse by setting goals and budgets for metrics like Time-to-Interactive.
Next up..
Each site should have access to both lab and field performance data.
To track the impact JavaScript can have on user-experience in a RUM (Real User Monitoring) setting, there are two things coming to the web I’d recommend checking out.
Field data (or RUM — Real User Monitoring) is performance data collected from real page loads your users are experiencing in the wild. Sites with heavy JavaScript payloads would benefit from measuring main-thread of this work through Long Tasks and First Input Delay.
The first is Long Tasks — an API enabling you to gather real-world telemetry on tasks (and their attributed scripts) that last longer than 50 milliseconds that could block the main thread. You can record these tasks and log them back to your analytics.
First Input Delay (FID) is a metric that measures the time from when a user first interacts with your site (i.e. when they tap a button) to the time when the browser is actually able to respond to that interaction. FID is still an early metric, but we have a polyfill available for it today that you can check out.
Between these two, you should be able to get enough telemetry from real users to see what JavaScript performance problems they’re running into.
Marcel Freinbichler had a viral tweet about USA Today shipping a slim version of their site to EU users. It loaded 42 seconds faster than their normal pages.
It’s well known that third-party JavaScript can have a dire impact on page load performance. While this remains true, it’s important to acknowledge that many of today’s experiences ship a lot of first-party JavaScript of their own, too. If we’re to load fast, we need to chip away at the impact both sides of this problem can have on the user experience.
There are several common slip-ups we see here, including teams using blocking JavaScript in the document head to decide what A/B test to show users. Or, shipping the JS for all variants of an A/B test down, even if only one is going to actually be used 🤯
We have a separate guide on loading Third-party JavaScript if this is currently the primary bottleneck you’re experiencing.
Get fast, stay fast.
Performance is a journey. Many small changes can lead to big gains.
Enable users to interact with your site with the least amount of friction. Run the smallest amount of JavaScript to deliver real value. This can mean taking incremental steps to get there.
In the end, your users will thank you.

This Week in Content Marketing: Why Won’t CMOs Consider Buying Media Companies?
PNR: This Old Marketing with Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose can be found on both iTunes and Stitcher. If you enjoy our show, we would love it if you would rate it or post a review on iTunes.
In this week’s episode
In this final regular episode, Robert ponders the nature of doing nothing (and doing it well). We discuss which company we feel is most likely to buy Fox, and whether Apple will ever really buy Disney. We also examine an increasingly disturbing web content trend, and media companies’ rush into the agency services business. Our rants and raves include net neutrality and audio content; then we sign off with an example of the week that takes us back to our own humble roots.

Rants and raves
(47:55): Joe’s rave: Considering recent findings from Edison Research that audiobook revenue surged to more than $2.1 billion in 2016, it should come as little surprise that publishers in this sector are experimenting with new ways to meet the feverish demand for audio content. For instance, Hachette Audio is taking advantage of the tremendous opportunity by pursuing audio-first content deals, in which the company would either generate a print version after the audio version gains sufficient traction, or would bypass the print book entirely, as detailed in this fascinating article from the Chicago Tribune.
(52:56): Robert’s call to action: Long-time PNR listeners have no doubt heard Robert’s take on the importance of net neutrality; and now, it’s time for supporters to take their last stand. The FCC vote to overturn earlier decisions to preserve net neutrality has been scheduled for December 14. If maintaining an open internet is something you are just as passionate about as Robert, please take a minute to educate yourself on the issue, call your state representatives and let them know how you feel, or donate to organizations that are helping to fight for our digital rights – including Fight for the future, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
(55:28): Robert’s rave: Though it’s more of a content story than a content marketing story, Robert still highly recommends that everyone check out this Medium article, which examines, in detail, what might just be the greatest sales pitch ever. Delivered by Drift director of marketing, Dave Gerhardt, at an OpenView Venture Partners recent speaker event, the brilliant narrative describes how the live chat tool company transformed its content operations into a movement, of sorts, by including five specific attributes in every one of its storytelling efforts.
This Old Marketing example of the week
(57:30): This Old Marketing: As we close this current chapter of our podcast collaboration, Robert and I decided to bring things full circle by focusing on This Old Marketing as our final Example of the Week. In addition to fueling a tremendous amount of content for our site, the show has made some other significant contributions to the CMI brand: Since its launch in November of 2013, our podcast has generated 2 million downloads, from listeners in 200 countries. It has also generated approximately a half-million dollars in direct revenue from sponsorships. But, perhaps even more importantly, it has served as a powerful, community-building forum, where our true fans could get more informed about our industry, get inspired to improve their own content, and get involved – in everything from sharing their perspectives on the topics we discussed, to suggesting story ideas and source articles, to submitting their favorite content examples for us to highlight, and more. We are truly grateful for your support, your participation, and your encouragement, and we look forward to sharing our future endeavors with you all.

Cold Iron from 'Rewards and Fairies'
by Rudyard Kipling
Rudyard Kipling was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), Puck of Pook's Hill (1906) and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If—" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature, and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift".
Rewards and Fairies is a historical fantasy book by Rudyard Kipling published in 1910. The book consists of a series of short stories set in historical times with a linking contemporary narrative. Dan and Una are two children, living in the Weald of Sussex in the area of Kipling's own home Bateman's.
Bateman's, Sussex
They have encountered Puck and he magically conjures up real and fictional individuals from Sussex's past to tell the children some aspect of its history and prehistory, though the episodes are not always historically accurate. Another recurring character is Old Hobden who represents the continuity of the inhabitants of the land. His ancestors sometimes appear in the stories and seem very much like him.
The full text of Rewards & Fairies can be found on Project Gutenberg. For more details about Rudyard Kipling visit the Wiki Page or Kipling Societ's website.
  Shakespeare's Puck & Sussex Pharisees
We discuss how Shakespeare may have heard the folklore of Puck on his travels with the Elizabethan court. The local Sussex word for Fairies, Pharisees, comes from the double plural found in the dialect - 'fairies-ies' or 'pharisees'.
"Then we have 'Puck' or 'Pook', which is derived from the Saxon word 'Puca', meaning a Goblin (Smith 1956 p.74). Both modern forms are common in placenames as will be seen later in this article, but also occurs as dialect description of fairies, but not just Goblins, which are seen as mischievous or nasty fairies (Simpson & Roud 2000 p.286). 'Dobbs' or 'Master Dobbs' is a name used for a house fairy that helps with the housework. If someone has been working harder than expected, it was often said of them that 'Master Dobbs has been helping you' (Parish & Hall 1957 p.31)." [Sussexarch.org]
  Iron from Stone
by Damh the Bard
This song, Iron from Stone, is inspired by the earlier song, Scarborough Faire. Damh tells us:
"Scarborough Faire is an amazing song. Such a wonderful melody and lyric that tells of all of the impossible tasks a human woman would need to achieve to be with a man from Elfland. But I began to wonder…
"These wonderful folk songs have been left us by anonymous writers from years ago and have been sung ever since. But is there another story behind Scarborough Faire? What about that songwriter from years ago? What inspired them to write such a song? So I thought I would tell that story." Damh the Bard
You can find his music on iTunes, or from his website, Pagan Music. He is also the voice behind Druidcast, the official podcast of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD, for short) - modern day Druids. You can find Druidcast here and find out more about OBOD here. You can find out more details about Damh on his Contributor page on our website.
  Cold Iron
by Rudyard Kipling
Puck, Dan & Una
"Cold Iron" is a poem written by Rudyard Kipling published as the introduction to Rewards and Fairies in 1910. In 1983, Leslie Fish set the poem to music and recorded it as the title track on her fifth cassette-tape album.
  Song of the Travelling Fairies
by Kate Fletcher & Corwen Broch
Song of the Travelling Fairies is a Manx lullaby collected in 1930 by Mona Douglas from Caesar Cashin who said that after each verse there used to be a little dance imitating the movements of the particular bird named. It comes from Fishe or Fowle - Kate and Corwen's new duo CD. It is a double CD with 25 tracks. Available now, as a physical CD from their website or to download from Bandcamp.
