I love Laios for many reasons but my silliest reason is that he is TANK REPRESENTATION. My boy is 100% farm raised beef and while he can obviously handle himself in a fight, I love that he doesn't have any cool weapon skills or special abilities outside of tactical monster knowledge. He just swings his sword. His job in combat is to wear heavy as fuck armor and throw his weight around. Ryoko Kui knows that a real tank isn't afraid to get brain damage (that's what the healer is there for).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Conversely, this is also one reason why I love Kabru, in the opposite direction, because I am a career DPS and I love his pure DPS energy. I love that he's a Dex fighter who looks like a baby deer and keeps a knife in his boot.
Tumblr media
He and Laios were destined to team up and be an unstoppable tank/DPS combo, they just weren't in the right story for it.

I was rereading through Dungeon Meshi and I only realized while going through the changeling chapters that Laios not recognizing that Dwarves have lower stamina and need more food than other races until after he was literally forced to walk a mile in their shoes is extra bad because Senshi isn't the first dwarf he's partied with; he had probably been regularly running poor Namari into the ground with zero recognition of how much she was suffering
truly do not know why you came into my inbox of all places with this, I'm not the person to randomly trash on a dunmeshi character in general, let alone Laios.
But for the record:
The whole chapter is about challenging the perspectives the characters have about on other based on their races, and making them realize more about each other (Chilchuck's age, why he avoids combat, dwarven stamina, half-foot mana limits, tall-men being bigger targets in fights, elven... elfiness not being just "put upon airs" as Senshi says)
Laios is explicitly so taken by how much he can carry and do as a dwarf that he over exerts himself faster than someone who has lived their whole life as a dwarf would. He doesn't know how to manage it as well. Other characters run into similar problems (such as Marcille casting a big spell and immediately getting hit with mana sickness as a half-foot)
The whole fucking manga is about the difficulties of understanding people across cultural and racial divides, and the importance of realizing how prejudices and assumptions can lead people to the wrong conclusions about those around them, even friends and family. Being willing to grow and change is more important than never getting something wrong in the first place.
Laios acknowledging his new understanding of dwarven physique, and even connecting it to ways his dwarven friends act (not wearing heavy armor, wanting to cook filling meals regularly) is actually pretty insightful and shows a curiosity and willingness to learn, imho.

The Beast In His Bones - Part III
Part I
"Right. I mean ... wait a minute! I don't want you to do anything, alright? It was just a stupid thing I said and it doesn't matter. We can just keep on doing what we've been doing."
"Ah", Laios hummed and shifted underneath him, Chilchuck's bare legs rubbing against the rough fabric of his breeches. "But you got so tight Chil ... if there's anything making you that excited ... I'd love to give it to you."
Something flipped in Chilchuck's stomach. It was not a bad feeling.
"And there's nothing to be embarrassed about! We'd just ... play pretend, yes? Just like Falin and I did when we were kids ... I didn't actually want to shoot and kill her when we played guards and bandits."
"Laios, stop talking about your sister right now."
Before him Laios straightened just slightly, eyes widening as if snapping to attention. It was ... cute. In a way that made Chilchuck soften more than was probably wise right now.
"Yes, of course, sorry!", he stammered, then let out a quick breath before continuing. "What I mean is ... if there's something you want, this or ... or anything else, really, we can always just try. I like making you feel good, Chil ... and I'd love to make you feel good in all the ways you want."
Laios' voice dipped at the end, sweet devotion in his words and longing in his eyes. Though there was something else as well, something hot and wanting. Chilchuck swallowed. So much gentle honesty was almost contagious. He let the words sit for a moment, contemplating the pleasantly relaxed offer. If Laios was so nonchalant about all this, if he really wanted to give Chilchuck everything, even this ... then maybe at least contemplating it further would not hurt.
"I don't even know why I like the idea so much...", he admitted after a long stretch of silence, carefully wading into these unfamiliar waters with Laios' warm hands heavy on his hips. Laios shrugged.
"Does it matter?"
"I..." Chilchuck frowned. He had always assumed there must be a reason for those quiet, secret thoughts he only allowed himself to indulge in every so often. But with Laios so uninterested in any possible explanation for his fucked up fantasies...
"I only care that you like it, not why. And ... I would also care about what you'd want to happen. If we ever tried it?" It was a careful suggestion, leaving Chilchuck enough room to back out if he needed to. But it was also direct enough to immediately summon a number of interesting images that made heat flood back into Chilchuck's cheeks.
Laios tearing his clothes off and pushing him down, fingering him rough and quick before slapping his ass and sinking inside, too fast, too soon. Laios cooing about Chilchuck's cries and whimpers but ignoring them otherwise. Laios using his body without much regard for his enjoyment or even comfort, pushing and pulling him into all kinds of positions, fucking into him for hours, leaving him marked up and bruised...
Chilchuck swallowed again and shifted in Laios' lap. His cock was already stirring inside the smallclothes he wore during the night. Laios' eyes followed his movements, subtle as they were, watching the bob of his throat, the slow roll and shift of his hips.
"Do you want to tell me?" Barely more than a whisper, no more pressing than the previous question. "Tell me what you want me to do to you...?" Chilchuck felt the breath catch in his throat at the sensual tone. Anything, he almost said, everything. Thankfully he was not that far gone. But with Laios eyes and hands on him ... Chilchuck did want to answer.
His lips were sticking together as he parted them, absent-minded tongue flicking out to wet them.
"I want...", he began but soon did not know how to continue. It was not like he had one nice, coherent fantasy he could simply tell Laios about. Those ideas were scattered, needy things he only ever allowed himself to indulge in alone and never for long. "I..."
"Come on", Laios encouraged, sweet without pushing too much. "I want to give you everything you want ... you just have to tell me." He pulled Chilchuck closer, slanting their hips together until the press of his half hard cock became very much apparent.
Laios was not just entertaining Chilchuck. He truly liked where this was going.
Chilchuck let out a heated breath and tried again.
"Sometimes I ... I think about you overpowering me. Holding me down and making me take it." His face was flushed hot by the time he had gotten the words out but the look in Laios eyes was worth every thudding heartbeat. There was a glimmer to them, one they sometimes held when they had been going for a while. As if nothing else mattered to him but wringing as much pleasure as possible out of Chilchuck's body. Intense and sparking.
"You like when I do that? When I use my strength on you and you can just let go? Ah, you're so beautiful when you let go, Chil..."
"Yes. Yes, but ... this time ... I'm asking you to stop or ... or to slow down." Chilchuck's gaze drifted lower at that, away from Laios' intense eyes and down to his chest. He reached up to splay the fingers of one hand against a bare collarbone, feeling the rhythmic thumping of a curious heartbeat. "But you don't. You just tell me I'll have to bear it for you ... 'cause you're not finished..."
Chilchuck's hips twitched at his own words, at the image he painted for both own them. Laios encouraged the movement, helping his hips rock forward and down, guiding them with his hands and pushing his own upward into the friction between them. Chilchuck shuddered as he felt the heat of Laios' growing erection even through the fabric of breeches and smallclothes.
"Mh, you like that thought? Me using you until I'm satisfied? Even if you're begging me to stop?"
"Fuck, Laios", Chilchuck bit out, his cock giving a heavy throb in his smallclothes. He had not expected his lover to be this on board with his dark little fantasies. It left him hopelessly enamoured and helplessly aroused.

It's weird and very racist how hostile the fanbase is about Toshiro. He's a foreigner who basically got pressured into joining an adventuring party that couldn't even get his name right and got a crush on the party cleric. Yes, he dislikes laios for the traits he has that Falin also has, but we don't get to really see her as a person outside of marcille and laios's pov 99% of the time. like there's people in your life who are just not gonna like you no matter what you do, and he even acknowledged that he knows that laios doesn't mean anything bad by it and he still considers him a friend, he's also under a lot of stress and hasn't been sleeping or eating which is bound to make someone lash out.
tbh, laios does a lot of annoying shit that even as an autistic person myself who has trouble reading social cues, would get annoyed by. Also, he's been doing the same thing the party has been doing, trying to rescue and revive Falin, just from a different angle. Yes, he was angry at Marcille for reviving Falin the way she did, but he admitted he would have made the same choice once he calmed down and even gave them an out to avoid arrest by fleeing the country.
As for the weird as fuck accusations that he gets in between marcille and Falin, that isn't even true. Not only does he leave the party to go get help from Wa, but Falin rejects his proposal anyway, so you guys won without firing a single shot, and i say that as a heavy marcille/falin shipper. it's really disgusting seeing the reaction he gets as the only clear person of color and foreigner in the touden party.

Stop Smoking, We Love You
I wrote a little thing based on @unkat's chilaios EMS AU, which has consumed my little pea brain. you don't need a whole lot of context though. 1k words, cw mentions of medical trauma, smoking, drugs. title comes from the car seat headrest song which makes me misty eyed thinking about my stupid boys.
Chilchuck relished the icy cold breeze on his sweaty face as he burst out into the rear parking lot of the hospital, the one for the employees that visitors still park in. He patted himself down until the sharp corner of a fresh pack of Newports hit his palm, and he remembered he’d been trying to use the inside pockets after he’d accidentally dropped a pack during a call and wasted thirteen bucks and tax before he’d even opened the damn thing. He was fortunate enough to have remembered his lighter, too; Senshi’s visiting family this weekend and he has no one else to bum a light from. He’d gotten in trouble the last time he asked a patient out of desperation.
He flicked his zippo and lit it in one smooth motion, a party trick that had long worn out its novelty and was just about to put it to the menthol-cool cigarette between his lips when two large hands entered his vision. One clapped the zippo shut and the other pinched the cig by the filter, tugging both out of Chilchuck’s grip.
“Yoink.”
“You mother fucker—”
Laios laughed as Chilchuck lunged after the precious nicotine clutched in his big hands, held just out of reach.
“This doesn’t look like twenty feet to me,” Laios grinned.
“I was going to hold it in until I reached the grass, fuck off, alright?”
“Then you won’t mind if I walk with you?”
Laios returned what he’d taken, and Chilchuck snatched it back. “Fine, fine, whatever. Come freeze your ass off with me.”
They crossed the parking lot, stepping carefully across black ice and hopping the curb to stand in the grass, a foot beyond the premises. Chilchuck made pointed eye contact with Laios as he stuck the cigarette between his lips and flicked the lighter open and shut, taking a long drag. He debated breathing it in Laios’ face, but decided to turn away. He blew a thin plume of smoke that caught on the brisk wind and whipped away. “Happy?”
“Not exactly,” Laios admitted. “You shouldn’t smoke, Chil.”
Chilchuck scowled. “Oh, here we go… listen, it’s my right to poison my body however I want. Just look at our patients.”
Laios fought a grim laugh and failed. “Hey, you asked.”
“What’s it matter to you anyway?” Chilchuck asked, slurred around the filter. He took another long drag and tapped out the ash into the frozen grass.
“As a medical professional, I prefer not to watch people die.”
Chilchuck released the smoke through his nose, rolling his eyes. “Preference doesn’t matter much to us, does it?”
“I guess not.”
Another long drag. He’d somehow blasted half the cigarette already. “You sound like my youngest,” Chilchuck breathed, with a fondly exasperated smile. Laios shifted around, his cheeks going pink in the cold. “She’s in the middle of some kind of health course and it’s got her all freaked out. ‘Daddy, don’t smoke those, they’ve got rat poison in ‘em!’” Chilchuck said, affecting a raspy falsetto. “It was kinda cute, but she was pretty upset,” he sighed. “She was crying. Must be a pretty heavy-handed program.”
“I had that growing up,” Laios said. "They had a cop come in and everything. Showed us pictures of tracheotomies.”
“Is that what they’re doing?” Chilchuck hissed. “She’s nine! She’s too young for that shit. I’m gonna complain to the PTA.”
“Hey, it kept me off. Do you want her on it?”
Chilchuck’s mouth drew into a long, thin line. “I guess not.”
They stood there, Chilchuck smoking, Laios doing fuck all with his hands in his pockets. Chilchuck wondered why he was out here at all if he hated cigarettes and smoking so much. It was biting cold, blustery, damp. It was a holiday weekend and there was only a matter of time before they got another Narcan call, he could be catching a nap before rush hour, but he was here.
“Does it help?” Laios asked. “With the stress, I mean.”
“Gives me an excuse to step out,” Chilchuck shrugged. “Gives me something to look forward to. Gives me a reason to breathe in and out for a few minutes that isn’t that dippy yoga shit.”
“Have you ever done it? That dippy yoga shit?”
“Hell no.”
“You want to try it? I can show you a few poses.”
Chilchuck choked on smoke, something he hadn’t done in twenty years. “You? Yoga?” The ass definition suddenly made a lot of sense.
“I don’t take classes, but you can learn a lot from YouTube videos.”
“Hm.” It had been the class aspect that turned him off the most. It felt somehow more embarrassing than just rocking up to the gym at three in the morning and dissociating on the treadmill for a few hours. “I’ll think about it.”
“I think it’d be fun,” Laios said, and Chilchuck almost believed him. “And it’s helped me, you know. After rough calls.”
Chilchuck sucked down the last of his cigarette and blew it upwards, a brief break in the wind allowing it to coil in upon itself in midair, minute particles glittering in the warm, flickering glow of the light post and simmering down in his lungs. He leaned down to smash the smoldering filter into the curb, putting the butt in his junk pocket to avoid being further nagged.
“Alright,” Chilchuck relented. “Why the hell not?”
Laios beamed at him. Chilchuck could think of a thousand reasons against meeting up with his boss to do anything that didn’t involve getting a beer, but looking at that self-satisfied grin gave him one very good reason in his favor. “It’s a date.”
“No it’s not!” Chilchuck squawked. Laios skipped away. Skipped. “It’s not a date, Laios!”
“See you then!”
“Nice HR violation!” Chilchuck screamed. “Mother fucker.” He muttered to himself, tapping his pack angrily against his palm and flipping up a lid for one more, just to spite him, and looked down at the neat rows of little paper cylinders, pristine and fresh.
Chilchuck crammed the box back into his pocket and trudged inside.

To bring this chain of asks full circle, what are your top ten favorite Delicious in Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi monsters and why? Either on the basis of biology, design, or even story significance? What are your favorite dishes from Delicious in Dungeon? 😋
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thin the chapter that introduced Dungeon Meshi's take on living armor is the moment where most readers realize they're in for something special and more than just the gag manga it could have been. For me, it's the epitome of what makes Dungeon Meshi's world-building so special. Living Armors are a stock monster in fantasy fiction, and normally the thought that goes into them begins and ends with "a suit of armor moves on its own because magic." That's all they have to be for an audience to accept them and move on, and in most fiction, that's all they will be.
Dungeon Meshi, by contrast, came up with the most creative explanation for why a suit of armor would walk around and attack people I've ever encountered. It's so bizarre that it's fascinating on its own - BUT THEN, just to show she's a fucking master of story-telling, Ryoko Kui makes the process of our hero discovering the nature of living armor vital to stopping them, saving his friends, and making his way through the dungeon. Dungeon Meshi took a monster archetype that is usually little more than a footnote and turned it into a crucial and iconic story beat, one so important that it continues to figure in to the plot thereafter in the form of Laios's living sword, Kensuke.
Tumblr media
Griffins are a monster I have a great deal of fondness for, and one I feel should be more prominent given how iconic they are. There should be more kickass griffins in fiction, more memorable griffin stories, more griffins in general! Dungeon Meshi didn't reinvent the wheel with its take on griffins like it did with Living Armors, but its griffin/hippogriff arc is nonetheless one of the most important emotional beats in the story, and also led into the changeling arc, which is one of the funniest in the entire manga. They also gave griffins the gravitas as a monster that they rightfully deserve. A+ griffin use.
Tumblr media
The vegetable lamb is one of my favorite obscure medieval folklore monsters and seeing it show up in this manga made me so happy. It is exactly the kind of bonkers idea that fits perfectly into Ryoko Kui's fantasy world, perfect addition, no notes.
Tumblr media
I'm of two minds on how Quetzalcoatl has been reduced to a monster in pop culture instead of, you know, the benevolent god he was originally, but Dungeon Meshi's coatl at least gets a lot of gravitas and even plays a semi-heroic role in some scenes, which is better than most knockoff Q's get. Also the one in the manga itself is covered in psychedlic flower pictures because of SPOILERS and it's really cute.
Tumblr media
...Falin's chimera form is ridiculously hot in ways that make me look long and hard at myself in the mirror and wonder why I'm wired like this.
Tumblr media
On a less existential side of things, Laios's Ultimate Monster design is, for my money, the absolute best running gag in the manga, with the PERFECT punchline at the story's climax that you'll think you've guessed but trust me, you haven't quite. If you're looking at it and thinking, "That looks like what a four year old would draw when making a monster," you are right, and that is the gag, and trust me, it is ALWAYS funny when it pops up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How many slots do I have left? Four? Fuck it, let's talk about the dragons, we can go over I don't give a shit. The Red Dragon is the Heavy for the first third of the manga, and it's built up impressively throughout all the monster-eating shenanigans, so that when it finally arrives as this small-scale kaiju who makes the dungeon tremble and quake in its path, you really get a sense of dread attached to it. A lot of modern fantasy fiction gets lazy with dragons, content to let their cultural reputation do the work for them, but Kui made sure that when a dragon entered her story, it feels like an EVENT.
Tumblr media
I haven't watched the anime yet, but what I've seen shows they did a good job handling Kui's design, which has this wonderful blend of T.rex, sauropod, and crocodile to give it this primordial reptilian strength. I also love how they animated its Thor Thimble, it's a great touch.
About the only thing I'd change about the Red Dragon is its lack of wings, but then you see how the other dragon species look in Dungeon Meshi, and it makes more sense. Another trope of modern dragons I dislike is giving them all one body plan, when their mythic predecessors could have all sorts of arrangements and numbers of limbs. Kui's dragons follow suit - the red dragon is a stocky quadruped, green dragons have the hexapodal look with two wings and slightly more gracile proportions, we've got two-legged and two-winged wyverns, two-armed wyrms, multi-finned leviathans, Asian-style dragons, and even a big fluffy arctic dragon for those freaks out there who don't want dragons to have scales for some inexplicable reason. All of them are still very much dragons, but each one feels unique and broadens what a "dragon" can be in the setting. It's great, I love it, A+ dragon usage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, yeah, there's one other dragon species I forgot to put up there - the Nightmares, which in your dreams look like, well, a nightmare, and in the waking world look like... shellfish. Apparently it's a Japanese pun that doesn't translate easily into English. They're not really my favorite monster but I knew if I included all the other dragons and not these guys then at least one person would feel compelled to "Um, actually" me. That nightmare form for the Nightmare looks pretty wicked, though.

Dungeon Meshi characters and the music I think they'd listen to:
Laios - No real genre cohesion, but loves anything that he can imagine monsters to. He has extensive mental music videos of monsters doing cool things that he will set to songs which he plays on repeat. Probably has more movie and video game soundtracks than actual mainstream music.
Marcille - Florence and the Machine and Hozier are amongst her favorite artists, and she has a soft spot for ALL dramatic and romantic songs, especially with female vocalists. She guards her tastes very carefully, afraid of what others might think, but will gush to Falin about her interpretations of lyrics, and make her playlists all day long
Chilchuck - dad rock and certain folk punk tracks. He's been found in a puddle of tears listening to mountain goats songs about breakups, but he never mentions that when he lists his favorite artists because he wants you to THINK he's not fucked up over it. Will also listen to classic blues.
Senshi - A jazz lover if I ever saw one. He doesnt really listen to it except in the background while cooking or working, but he likes it because it reminds him of the improvisational side of cooking, and how it keeps him moving while he works.
Falin - I think Falin likes a lot of pop but has a particular soft spot for vocaloid, j-pop, k-pop and chiptune. She's just deeply autistic about the artists she likes, doesnt particularly "stan" anyone because she doesnt approach it like that, but she does try to get Marcille into it all (with mixed success)
Izutsumi - the meow mix jingle (breakcore remix) [10 hours]
Kabru - The widest range listener, because he'll gladly listen to and learn about any of the artists people around him listen to. He specifically keeps up with top 40 entirely so he can have an idea whats in the zeitgeist. If you ask him to put on something and he doesnt know your tastes he'll default to a "safe option" like chillhop beats to study/relax to
Thistle - This one I'm not super sure but Linkin Park for sure is a regular listen for him. Will cry-sing along with it. Probably also delves into other teenage angst music ranging from pop punk to emo. Would write his favorite lyrics in sharpie on his ragged converse
Shuro - All classical. He was raised to have extremely refined tastes and can play several instruments himself, but he doesnt have much interest in music really.
Namari - I dont know why but I feel like she'd have an eclectic mix of classic hip-hop artists like Missy Elliot, riot girl music, and old school heavy metal. Also probably has a soft spot for certain pop songs but refuses to admit it.
Mithrun - I want to say he'd be into Shoegaze but like, obviously does not seek out music, so he literally only listens to whatever those around him put on.
Fleki - Psych rock, psy-trance, trip-hop. Do i even have to explain
Lycion - All Hardcore. Loves the energy and will actively mosh.
Pattadol - An absolute Swiftie.
Cithis - The sort to listen to indie pop and then EVISCERATE you for your opinions on music online. Hates Swifties.
Otta - Loves mainstream hip-hop/pop music. I feel like she'd really love Doja Cat.
I think thats every main character. If you disagree with my thoughts dont be mean! We're all just trying to have fun here

Dungeon Meshi - Quick Reacts (CHAPTER 14: Kelpie)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know, I understand why people are annoyed by her attitude towards Senshi’s food and Laios’ tastes, but you gotta admit she’s trying her best.
Tumblr media
this is another one of these things that don’t really come up in games but... thank fuck they have flowing water. That would be a real deal breaker if you want to survive. And they can shave and brush their teeth? It’s a miracle.
Tumblr media
To be fair, I think Senshi’s beard is probably its own ecosystem by now. He probably uses it as a scrub brush.
Tumblr media
At least if she does that, you’ll be picking way less dwarf hair out of your food. Come on guys, we know that stuff gets in there when he cooks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
someone get this woman to design a whole ass game.
Tumblr media
Water walk! Good wizard.
Tumblr media
is Senshi afraid of water?! Dwarves I swear.....
Tumblr media
Aww, their first party fight! I’m shocked at how coordinated Laios and Chilchuck are.
Tumblr media
HE’S STILL SINKING, JUST SLOWLY.
Tumblr media
HIS BEARD? It repels magic... 😂
Tumblr media
Laios, you don’t look as sure as you sound.
Tumblr media
Oh. OH yEAH. There will be NO repercussions for THAT.
Tumblr media
Marcille’s little “Anne.” isn’t even a question. She’s just disappointed.
Meanwhile, that Kelpie straight up wants the blood and guts soaked into his beard.
Tumblr media
Didn’t that thing... walk.... out from UNDER the water though?
Tumblr media
That seems extreme as well, but I’m on this hill with Laios and his distrust of horses.
Tumblr media
I see someone speaks from experience.
Tumblr media
Yeah, I could have maybe seen that coming.
Tumblr media
Though I AM legitimately disappointed by this turn of events.
Tumblr media
Horses are horrifying when they’re given dog mouths - confirmed.
...actually hold on
Horses are horrifying when they’re given dog mouths - confirmed.
Tumblr media
Marcille’s been on the protein I see.
Tumblr media
Laios, you are right but also your little pet monster will eat you one day. For no though, the fact that you almost drowned it is adorable.
Tumblr media
Don’t you though? I imagine if anyone understands how monsters think, it would be you, Laios.
Tumblr media
It’s true that he loved her. It’s also true that letting her rot without using her would be a waste. In a way, she will carry them further this way.
Tumblr media
oooh, is she making soap?
Tumblr media
There’s something about the idea of using things you have at your disposal that makes this really cool. The fact that everything they’re making, aside from very special ingredients like olive oil, are all scavenged and created with their own hand is... I don’t know... heartwarming?
Tumblr media
THEY’RE!!!! BONDING!!!!
Tumblr media
Weirdly heartwarming.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe just let it air dry--
Tumblr media
whEEZE---- I CAN’T--
Tumblr media
There he goes............the magnificent beast............
Tumblr media
GROUP HUG! aww
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.......................... coding, man. No matter what century, that one typo will get ya.
Tumblr media
The real BBEG was the lack of unions all along...............
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
YOU ASKED FIRST, YOU DINGUS. 😂
All that said, Laios doesn’t strike me as someone interested in romance.
Tumblr media
this is just a magical hermit crab.
Tumblr media
NOOO HE JUST WANTED TO VIBE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You guys could probably make a fortune as dungeon delvers if you weren’t after Falin.
Tumblr media
Who knows if souls exist? Haven’t you all died multiple times?
Tumblr media
............Well, they do have skin and a squishy inside, and they grow..... checks out.
Tumblr media
........you know what? I’ll take it. Wine? Necromancy. Cheese? Necromancy. Natto? DEFINITELY necromancy.
Tumblr media
Marcille doesn’t drink?
Tumblr media
...........is this doodle-bob all over again?
Tumblr media
Senshi, who nearby died by Kelpie: WHY DON’T THEY WANT MY LIVER? IT’S GOOD FOR THEM!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.....................like respects like. These two are on the same frequency.
Tumblr media
If we’re being nitpicky about it, Anne never actually bit Senshi. She went after the Mimic. Maybe she just got tired because he was fucking heavy........
Horses, man.

I do wonder how that one scene is gonna go down in the anime where in one of the few places in the series it happens Laios expresses how damn deeply upset he's been about the whole situation with Falin and the party nearly dying to dragon.
Since the anime has been skipping or shortening a bunch of the character-building, relationship-building, worldbuilding, moments from the manga especially if they're more dialogue heavy.
I still think it wasn't great idea to cut the part of the dragon fight right after Laios kills the dragon and is not doing great between the blood loss and shock where he tries to stand on the leg that got bitten off and falling but not really noticing while he's muttering about what he *needs to do* (check on everyone, search the dragon's guts for Falin's body, learn healing magic...). Cause like yeah letting folks be fucked up for a little bit longer would show better how dire the situation was. And just lil character stuff.

Disparate Thoughts on Dungeon Meshi
I'm an anime-only watcher, so no spoilers beyond what's currently aired (eps 1-3) + mild map spoilers for a random 3.5e D&D module (Sunless Citadel).
- I'm not the first nor will I be the last to harp on the English localised title but Delicious in Dungeon sucks. I do, however, think going with the "DnD" naming scheme was a nugget of a good idea (let's face it, "Dungeon Food" sucks too). Maybe "Diners in Dungeon"/"Dungeons & Diners" instead (as in those who dine, not a place where one dines). Or "Dungeon Dine" (like "dungeon dive"). Regardless, I'll just be calling it Dungeon Meshi going forward.
- I don't know if this is coloured by me going into this series with the knowledge that Ryoko Kui loves Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 or a wider ripple effect of eastern dungeon-fantasy conventions being shaped by there not being an official Japanese translation of D&D between Basic and 5e, but the world-building's vibe is old-school D&D as hell. It feels like it was written by someone who maybe never got the chance to play the tabletop game much but spent hours poring over the 1e Monster Manual in hopes of getting a campaign off the ground (and ended up penning a manga instead, game scheduling be damned). There's the disarming of traps, feeling for secret doors, and even the iconic red dragon as seen on the covers of the Basic Dungeon Master's Handbook and 1e Monster Manual being the dungeon boss. Design-wise, the dungeon's layout it reminds me a bit of the map from Ruins of Castle Greyhawk or The Sunless Citadel (pictured below, right).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- The main cast is very tropey at the moment. Quite literally all the Basic classes are covered; the generic white man Fighter (Lv 1, no multi-attack yet :P) as the party face, the halfling/thief, the elf/wizard, the missing cleric, the dwarf... This works for this point in the narrative but doesn't make me particularly attached to any of them. They need another overarching obstacle.
- I generally don't like Studio Trigger's output (not the Imaishi-involved stuff anyway; Gridman fucks) but I respect how bouncy their animation usually is. So, I was excited to watch something animated by Trigger but not (originally) written by them. Dungeon Meshi, however, looks static and resorts too often to Dutch angles to maintain visual interest. There's a bit of an art shift in episode 3 where this improves; more fun "off-model" moments, the movements get a little bouncier, more color harmony. Hopefully, this stays and isn't just a guest director fluke. Form the snippets I've seen on the manga, Kui suffers a bit from "draw background killed my grandma", thus her ability to make her simple character designs emote well has to carry the page. The anime does the opposite; super detailed backgrounds but flat shading/lack of texture on the characters creates a need for them to over-emote with a "screen-shake" effect in order to stand out from their surroundings, which I could see getting old fast. The main event, the food, looks better in the anime than in the manga due to colour and animation bringing it to life.
- I don't usually laugh at Japanese comedies because they're either too slapstick for my tastes or too pun heavy for my JP comprehension level. Dungeon Meshi gets a point for making me "lol" more than once.
- Finally, a good panty shot:
Tumblr media
- I watched episode 3 dubbed. EN Marcille > JP Marcille (I say this as a stickler for subs). The rest of the dub cast is fine but I'm probably sticking with JP because JP Laios' ability to scream > EN Laios (EN is a great generic white man, though). I'm not familiar with most of the JP voice cast. I think Chilchuck is my fave in JP.
Both languages have little breathing room between lines of dialog and I was hoping the EN dub would play around with the fact that the character speaking isn't necessarily the one on screen (thus less lip-flap matching, especially for Senshi, who has few indicators that he's actually speaking even when he's onscreen) but alas. I'll do another one of these if I have more to say later in the season 🥂

Laois waking up, feeling like he’s having a nightmare – something heavy is resting on chest? He is cold, and an unpleasant sensation of movement beneath him, crawling over his skin… He is in danger! He opens his eyes to find an unsetteling familiar and yet changed face smiling at him, fangs glistering in the candle light. He shudders as he is greeted by the demon wearing Kabru’s face…
STOP- screech- This is what I sort of had in mind, demon!Kabru surfacing and fucking Laios and breeding with demonic bodyparts and mpreg/omega shit going on and all angst between Kabru!human and demon batteling and and and … But since Dungeon Meshi is so funny and light to read/watch the following stuff blocked the serious depraved fanfic in my mind from getting written. Have some lore/production notes/bloopers to read on A03 if you want to, sorry/ not sorry for not delivering ^^

NSFW Prompt Rules
Things I'll Write
1. Soft Safe SFW Vore
yeah you heard me right
2. Mpreg
and pregnancy in general

but only if you're okay with it being written by me, a cis author who has little experience writing trans characters (something I'm working on so this might improve)

5. Dubious Consent
as in 'Fuck or Die' 'Sex Pollen' 'Something Made Then Do It' 'didn't explicitly ask for consent but they're both into it'

9. Size Kink
10. Plot Heavy
11. Other, unless it's on the 'No' or 'Maybe' part of the list, feel free to ask
12. Genderbending to F/M
normally I have an issue with making a gay ship straight to ship them, but with Chilaios, I think one of them being a girl could only make things Worse and More Complicated, and therefore more interesting!!
Things I Might Write
1. Omegaverse
i don't care if who the alpha/omega is or it they're betas or both alpha or whatever, but I'll only write omegaverse if it includes mpreg because I use it more as a plot device for a kid or pregnancy fic than anything
2. Light Bondage
like ropes, holding someone in place, vines, tentacles, not handcuffs or rope burn, or chains
3. Past Noncon
only if the one doing the noncon is not a canon character

14. Noncon
15. Genderbending to F/F
i just have yet to write f/f nsfw so i'm not comfortable with writing it for a prompt yet

Forbidden Fruit - Part XIII
Part I
If only Chilchuck could catch his breath. If only he would be able to gather his thoughts enough to focus. If only he could string together a single sentence, no matter how short.
But with the way Laios rocked his hips, slow but firm, grinding up along his prostate and keeping that palm pressing down against the obscene bulge of his lower abdomen ... there was no way out of this. No chance to take a step back, to bring distance and safety between them.
Chilchuck was caught between large hands, pinned under a hungry gaze, speared open and left gasping. His own cock was dripping a steady stream of fluids as his prostate was massaged, his body was burning up and there was nowhere left to run. No story left to tell, no fantasy world where this was anything but raw and real.
He shivered as icy realisation pumped through his veins, offsetting the heat trapped beneath his skin.
And right there, with those golden eyes all bright and attentive, Laios' bitten lips pulled into a soft smile.
"I know", he breathed, palm gently rubbing across the bump. "It's ... it's a lot. But don't worry, I got you."
Despite the sweet words Laios’ motions grew more insistent, hips rocking upwards until they were almost rutting into Chilchuck. Holding him still right where he was kneeling. Fucking up into his tight and pliant body.
Chilchuck shivered again, this time not with terror.
"I promise, I got you. And I'll take care of you. Good care. If you let me. Ah, please Chil, let me take care of you. I'll make you feel ... so good..."
That smile was the sweetest thing Chilchuck had ever seen Laios wear, his eyes wide and eager as he kept up the rhythm of his snapping hips. As if he understood. As if he knew and saw.
Maybe Chilchuck had lost his mind somewhere along the way. Maybe his brain had already melted or the onslaught of dizzying stimulation had burnt out some vital connections. Because he was not scared anymore.
It was not a conscious decision to nod at Laios' whose smile pulled into a wide, joyful grin. Not a choice to let his weight collapse into large, warm hands that held him up with gentle ease. But it still felt good, right, to let go and give himself to the moment. To the one man he trusted with his entire being to always treat him with care and respect.
Maybe that was the most dangerous thing of all.
"Oh gods, yes", Laios whispered as he felt Chilchuck soften in his arms. Not too much, not entirely, relinquishing just enough control to allow Laios what he had begged for: To take care of him. "I got you, Chil. I got you..."
His grip shifted back to Chilchuck's hips and, after finally having gotten permission, he began to move them. Urging them to rise and fall in time with his own thrusts, pushing deep, then sliding out again.
With the hand gone from Chilchuck's abdomen the pressure and stimulation of his prostate were less intense. Still enough to make him groan with each deep thrust but at least he could breathe freely again.
Looking down Chilchuck could now clearly see the outline of that cock bulging his usually concave abdomen, sliding up along his insides with each controlled roll of their hips grinding together. It was visible proof of what they had accomplished together. Of what Laios was doing to him. How he had opened Chilchuck up and filled him and changed his body to fit their needs. Maybe irreversibly.
The thought, as irrational as it was, made Chilchuck pull tight around Laios' cock as his own gave a heavy throb. Before he realised it one hand had wandered down to press against his abdomen. To feel what Laios was doing to him.
The movement felt as surreal under his palm as it looked yet it made Chilchuck's arousal spike so hard his eyes crossed.
"Right?", Laios groaned, slowing down their movements to a deep, intense grind right into Chilchuck's touch. "You're incredible, Chil. Never thought you could take me like this..."
Neither of them had, it seemed. Good thing they still tried.
The slowing of their joint movement, as intense as it made the moment, set Chilchuck's teeth on edge. Something hot and impatient crawling under his skin. A moment later he caught himself squirming in Laios' grip.
"Come on", he rumbled, vision sharpening as he focused on the other man's flushed face. "Want you to fuck me..."
Laios' expression, dreamy and soft just a moment ago, brightened at the words.
"Really?"
Pulling together the last bits of resolution he could muster Chilchuck bit out a sharp "I will not ask again, Laios" and hoped he would not have to. Because if Laios waited a minute longer he just might.

absolutely fucking hilarious to me (aka i'm actually no joke mad whenever i think about it) that a "maligned" yuri bracket that as the creator admits started about lesser known or disliked femslash just about IMMEDIATELY derailed as soon as the creator allowed leniency for "oh well a lot of people seem under the impression that something is 'maligned' (synonyms: vilified, slandered, infamous) if its UNIVERSALLY FUCKING BELOVED by the fandom but the story itself gets in the way of it for reasons ranging from "author is a dipshit" (perhaps a valid reason to consider it maligned) to "its a fucking tragedy and the fact they can't just live happily is MEANT TO BE SEEN AS FUCKING SAD *YOU ARE THE DIPSHIT HERE*" so like, all these polls are just popularity anyway so who can say if "most popular out of a succession of lesser-known, shitty, not-shitty-but-people-act-like-it-is, etc" is any more meaningful than "literally just the most popular ship we put on the bracket. like you could've answered this without even doing the polls just go over the initial bracket and choose the most dedicated fanbase and extrapolate"" and now its just a succession of Farcille sweeping every single matchup despite the fact that i've never met a single fucking person worth caring about who actually dislikes it. like i assume the pervs who just write the usual isekai monster x innocent girl "fanart" (...did they even read it...?????? i kinda feel like they got maybe 2 volumes in lmao. fake fans) don't really care for it but who gives a shit about them they should die. its not unpopular in the slightest aside from *probably* i assume overexposure or the one sad little laios x marcille shipper sitting in the corner who doesn't simultaneously also ship farcille in that kinda wierd freudian-isn't-the-right-word way that makes my stomach churn. FUCK THESE SENTENCES BRO WHY DO I WRITE LIKETHIS ok i wrote ahead but didn't address a point bc i my skull turned off but- Farcille doesn't even get like, morality discoursed much??? Like theres always those ships out there which are popular but get picked apart for potential patterns of abuse or unhealthy behavior or if you *think* about it Adora and Catra were both raised by the same (nonconsentually adoptive) parental figure which can make it incest Which Is An Argument That I Struggle With Completely Disregarding Because Of The Subset Of Incest Shippers That Do In Fact Take It That Way (But As A Positive), y'know. that kinda shit. Not even getting into the cases where a ship is more unambiguously fucking bad on a morality standpoint fandom popular or not. I could use this opportunity to soapbox but I won't.
hell even some of the contestants that actually have some leg to stand on are still an ill fit - kyosaya is from Madoka, which means that while fans can feel whatever way they please there Is a certain malicious element to their existence which isn't just excusable as "part of the tragedy/conflict", but its STILL one of the two "heavy hitter" ships outta the original series's fanbase (i don't know dick all about magia record). HELL madohomu at least gets the "is there discourse about it being dysfunctional/abusive/one-or-the-other-involved-painted-as-a-predator" treatment, despite being like... THE relationship the series itself fucking circles around. idk maybe madohomu was in there and i didn't notice. still wouldn't really fit though (maybe back in 2014....)
anyways delia x jessie would belong on there more than like 90% of the bracket just for the "they're basically canon" sweep-kerfuffle (if they WERE in this bracket. lol lmao that'd be hilarious actually wonder who they lost to)
