#i do evaluate decisions carefully and i generally want to know all my options before committing to something
Note
Hii! 3, 27 and 29 for the ask game :)
Hello hello hello <3 and thank you for the questions!
3. What was the last song you listened to?
DAUGHTER, by Beyoncé.
Since I've already shared a lot of Cowboy Carter songs, I'm also going to tell you the one I listened to before DAUGHTER: Back On 74 by Jungle.
27. What’s your favorite book? Or just one you’ve read a few times?
Technically I've already answered this one here, but of course I'm going to take the chance to talk about another one of my favourites. :)
I'm a big Jonas Jonasson fan and I've re-read his novels many times; my favourite is a tie between The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared and The Girl Who Saved The King Of Sweden. They're delightfully absurd, marvelously funny stories that always put me in a good mood, and I adore them.
29. Does it take you a long time to make decisions?
Hmm. I do get stuck on decisions sometimes, mostly on choices that somehow involve other people, but apart from those few times I'm a fairly decisive person -- and when I've made a decision it tends to be final; it's hard to change my mind. I do struggle a bit with executive function, though, and afaik that's related to decision-making, so perhaps I'm less of a decisive person than I think!

The First Steps Into the Adventure (Patton partners with Janus)
Summary: well it would be no good telling you what happened!
Note: AAH! Okay, I can’t really believe how many people interacted with this! Thanks! Right, so this is still basic introduction stuff, I’ll admit. This is a bit clunky but I want to give as many chances for this to be interactive as possible.
The decision will be presented at the end!
Once again, this is inspired by fluffomatic’s tickle forest idea!
Previous Part!
_._._
Patton screwed his face up in concentration, carefully evaluating them, before he lit up and pointed at Janus, “You’re on my team, JanJan!”
“Well good luck on your journey, lover boy,” Janus taunted with a smirk as he walked to stand beside his team leader, Virgil quickly punched his hat down over his eyes as he scampered off as well. He was violently blushing as he approached Logan and he managed to give a friendly smile.
“Great! Now just two more things to do!” Roman announced with an elaborate flourish.
“How much more to this is there!” Janus frowned to which Patton tweaked his side as a warning.
“Well if you wish to adventure blindly without your map and a hint, then that’s up to you!” Remus cackled as he chucked paper at them violently.
Logan frowned at their map, beyond it’s very apparent unprofessionalism, it seemed fairly straight forward. It was simply one long winding path to a large childishly scribbled ‘X’. He expected something a bit more detailed from a joint creativity project but maybe that was yet to be seen. “Is my map the same as Patton’s?”
“Yeah, if it’s like a race thing then I’m out,” Virgil snarked.
“Nah, see your map goes down this left road and Patton’s goes to the right,” Remus answered.
“Ah I get it. Left brain goes left and right brain goes ri...” Logan mumbled off as both creativities looked at him blankly. He may as well be speaking Spanish... well if Roman didn’t speak Spanish. Maybe they weren’t quite on his level of genius.
“Anyway!” Roman called out and magicked two sealed envelopes, “Now it wouldn’t be fair to just send you into this world without any warning. So we randomly selected two of our fantastical beasts... or one of our plants to inform you of.”
Logan perked up at that- maybe the detail would be in the inhabitants of this adventure rather than the adventure itself. Patton handed the envelope to Janus as he had a very bad habit of sucking badly at opening envelopes. Janus wordlessly and without even looking, hooked his finger under the flap and opened it in one swipe.
“What is it!” Patton squealed.
“Give me a second,” Janus answered with a glare at Logan’s team. He hooked his arm over Patton to turn them so there was no way that Logan’s team could cheat and look at their sheet, “Also be quieter. I don’t know about you but I truly don’t care about winning this.”
It was a very short page from what looked like an encyclopaedia but the information was very limited and basic. Not that they would be complaining.
A picture showed a huge ‘Little Shop of Horrors’-esque plant monster. Remus’ influence was pretty easy to see. Janus doubted Roman would ever want to create something like that, but he did smile as he recognised that Remus would never have the monster be this pretty looking. Clearly they were much better working as a team. The plant had gorgeous pristine white petals framing a pastel pink ‘face’. The page was titled ‘Motherbloom’.
“A large flower that’s queen of the tickle forest. She pins down her target and lifts their shirt to deliver a long raspberry on the tummy. She also uses her vines to tickle at other areas. The leafy sacs around the base of the flower holds air she uses for raspberries. The white flowers on the bush carry an intense pollen. Scientists discovered that if this pollen is transferred to other plants, the plants offspring will become tickle plants.”
Patton released a squeal that only dogs could hear. “Patton!” Janus hissed as he tried to wrangle his team leader under control.
“Ah! Aren’t you super tickly to raspberries JanJan?” Patton launched into a hug and quickly pressed a small raspberry to his neck; which totally didn’t send Janus squealing himself.
“Aw man, you guys got the motherbloom! May come in handy that,” Roman peered over their shoulders.
“I thought you decided which ones we got?” Patton asked.
“No, it truly was random. We put everything we created into a list and used a number generator to chose which one everyone learned about.”
“Wow, that is... very thorough of you both,” Janus complimented. Roman blushed violently at the very small compliment and awkwardly shrugged it off.
Logan opened the envelope with a summoned letter opener and quickly withdrew the page. He frowned as he realised this was probably ripped directly from some book. Virgil leaned on to his shoulder casually to peer at the page; therefore making his brain shortcircuit. How dare his boyfriend be so casually cute and affectionate. How was he supposed to work in these conditions. Virgil already looked quite beautiful on this day. Despite how rushed he was to get ready for what Roman and Remus planned, his makeup exaggerated his slightly sleepy eyes and of course his bright almost neon green and purple eyes looked as striking as ever. He was all bundled into his jumper just in case their adventure got too cold and he was mindlessly nuzzling into the front. He was... “Well this isn’t a whole lot to go off on?”
“Wha...” Logan perked up again and stared at the page. It was titled Tickler Jelly.
“These jellies are attracted to pool toys and swim up to them. If a person is easily targetable, they will latch on and begin tickling the target with its four large feathers.”
It showed some very typical jelly fish with obvious feathery fluttering stingers near the centre with normal, presumably, non-stinging stingers that are used to latch on to the victims. It was pink and undeniably adorable so Logan concluded this was probably a Roman creation. But then again, jellyfish were quite intimidating animals so maybe Remus suggested the concept itself.
Remus had walked over to them with a shrug, “Would you’ve rather we didn’t give you any information to go on?”
“Well no but we may not even go into water so really this isn’t any good!” Virgil frowned.
“And now you know what could be lurking in the water! I’d stop whining if I was you! This was totally random, I don’t control what you lot found out.”
“Right! Teams!” Roman teleported back on to the platform and stood on his throne, “I wish you the best of luck in your adventures. Your journeys will be long and treacherous. But you must keep in mind that your treasures are waiting for you. If you keep a sharp eye out, you may even find hints along the way to help unlock your treasure. May the best team get to the treasure quickest. Good luck teams!”
Roman and Remus clapped dramatically and the whole stage puffed into a wave of technicoloured smoke.
The same stage that everyone was standing on.
They all fell to the floor with grumbled swears. Both teams awkwardly stared at the other before Janus leapt to his feet and dragged Patton down the path. Logan, seeing this, immediately pulled Virgil into his arms and sprinted down the dusty path ahead of them. The game was on.
Patton and Janus raced ahead until they lost sight of the other team and settled quickly into a walk. “Right, so what do we need to do?” Janus asked, he figured he better play the game properly and actually pretend that Patton made a good team leader.
“Just follow this path. By the looks of it we have to follow this path which takes us into a wooded bit then across a river before getting to the treasure. Simple!” Patton chirped as he charged on ahead.
The world was just as beautiful as any other the creativities had created before. Despite it being the evening, it was still a warm day with a gorgeous clear blue sky. There were a few streaks of bright white clouds and there was only enough wind to prettily rustle the leaves of the trees. It was beautiful. The path was taking them past a bit of a thicker grassy bit. Trees dotted along their path with thick bushes of ferns and dry yellow grass that stretched up to their waists.
Janus frowned as he saw the path was still tilting around a section of trees. “Can I look at the map?”
“Sure.” Patton handed it over without any fuss.
“Yeah, wait!” Janus pulled them to a stop and pointed to the path they were following on the map. The map clearly showed that the path they were following was awkwardly circling around the wooded bit. It would probably take double the amount of time to follow the path or just cut through the wooded bit. “We should just cut through this wooded bit. We’ll end up back on the path and probably cut off a good ten minutes.”
“Oh yeah!” Patton stared at the map before flicking up to look at the path, “but we have no idea what could be lurking in the forest ready to tickle tickle tickle us!” He was wiggling his fingers and curling up to Janus. To which he totally didn’t blush. Of course he got partnered up with the literal tickle monster.
“Yes but then again we have no idea what could be on the path. We seen some butterflies flying around, any one of them could be planning an... attack on us. I don’t think we’ll be in any more danger if we cut through. Plus, don’t you think it would be in Remus’ nature to punish us for following the boring predictable option?”
“Well, we should figure this out soon. The more time we stand here arguing, the more time we are wasting...”
Meanwhile... with Logan’s team!
“Right. Now the most logical decision would be to analyse the map and decide which is the optimal route to travel. Knowing Patton, he will be following the map blindly,” Logan pulled Virgil to a stop and summoned a compass so to actually use the map effectively.
“Yeah but he also has Janus with him. We have no idea what they could be doing,” Virgil awkwardly tried to conceal just how hard he was panting from the short run. Logan ignored him by examining the map and looking up for any identifying features.
“Okay so by the looks of it, we can follow the path through the plain fields ahead of us. Or we can quickly jog over that hill and there will be a public garden.”
“Why would we go through a garden?” Virgil frowned and yoinked the map away from him.
“Well right now we are at the mercy of whatever the twins have organised,” Logan stated.
“Yeah you don’t need to remind me. Us even standing still right now could be the opportunity this weird world is looking for. We could be standing in the middle of an ant hill for all we know!” Virgil whined but Logan pressed him into his side with a gentle smile.
“All good points. I’m just saying the field could contain anything for all we know while a flower garden would only contain flowers. Therefore we know to avoid loitering and interacting with the flowers and it could be a straightforward path forward. They both lead to the same place,” Logan reasoned as he guided them slowly forward.
“Do you want to go through the garden?”
“I think it’s worth considering. However, I could never outshine you in thoroughly considering our options. I’ll leave the decision up to-”
“Too much pressure!” Virgil laughed and burrowed into his chest.
“Okay then,” Logan murmured, “we could continue through the field and face whatever they have planned. Or we go through a flower garden and know we have to face tic... plants. Hmm...”
And so the adventure has fully began!!
Should Patton and Janus:
A) Follow the path.
B) Cut through the wooded bit.
Should Logan and Virgil:
1) Go through the field.
2) Go through the flower garden.

Home Renovation Malaysia
With the plenty of Home and Garden Television Programs presently broadcasting in real time, a large number of us have gotten the "Renovation bug", that baffling want to gut and modify our homes and make our dream home. Regardless of whether you are examining renovating, reestablishing or rearranging your home, basically what you are truly endeavoring to do is to make the correct stage for your day to day routines and the lives of our families and companions.
youtube
Changing your home can be a unimaginably charming cycle that liberates your internal imagination while growing our comprehension of ourselves, our families and our yearnings. The way in to an effective renovation can be separated into your arranging, versatility and examination.
Obviously the unavoidable issue everybody asks preceding a renovation is "Will my renovation unleash Havoc on my life and family?" The genuine response to this is "Yes", however regularly in an extraordinary and sudden way! Renovations or redesigning our homes permits us to develop, to study ourselves and to make the best possible setting for our carries on with that we imagine living inside.
HOW TO APPROACH YOUR RENOVATION
o Be Realistic - If you live in a lodge and you're re-trying the storm cellar family room and you love metropolitan space living, 14' roofs and downtown perspectives - you're not going to get it. However, if you need it to have a contemporary pizazz with warmth, provocativeness and edge, at that point that is totally feasible.
o Have a point by point spending plan for your task. - Calculate EVERYTHING from the stray pieces to the silks and light plates. Ensure that your Designer and additionally Contractor recognize what the budgetary roof for each venture and thing is and if you go over on one of them, that it implies you should either scale back somewhere else or acknowledge the expanded financial plan.
o Research the best contractor for you. - Find the best contractor that suits your undertaking, your character and offers your design vision. Try to meet with in any event 3 Designers or Contractors preceding creation a choice.
o Understand holding up times - Custom couches can take up to 12 to 14 weeks. Custom Cabinetry is frequently 10 to about four months - a few textures can take as long as 3 months. Examination your choices so there are no mistaken assumptions.
o Put a positive turn on the cycle - actually there will be badly designed revolting days with no water or no kitchen or both. If you have children make it a pleasant encounter, set up a tent and go outdoors in a zone in the house so it's a good time for them and financial plan for an inn suite for the most exceedingly awful period and have all the revolting pieces done during your nonattendance. Try to think innovatively on how to put the best "turn" on the harsh occasions to your family and yourself.
o Don't perspire the little stuff - If for reasons unknown something is postponed past anybody's desires it won't benefit you in any way to detonate and send your circulatory strain through the roof. On account of the "no show" thing, either reselect the thing or acknowledge that it is postponed. Truly those are the main decisions so make life simpler on yourself (and your family) and figure out how to adjust your design plan (I generally suggest having a back up choice just on the off chance that to forestall losing time and cash).
Obviously before you can start ANY renovation, you need to discover "what your identity is" and "what is your style". It is safe to say that you are energetic about Traditional, Contemporary, Transitional, Modern, Urban, Zen, Ethnic or Eclectic styles? You can not effectively start this cycle without having the option to solidly state what your style is and what the objective for your renovation is and how you carry on with your life. You will likewise need the assistance of a decent designer to sharpen what it is you are attempting to make. Try to go out and see what is accessible; go to however many showrooms and providers as could be expected under the circumstances. You will discover these outings to be rousing and furthermore an extraordinary learning experience too.
As we as a whole know, the greatest, generally costly and most definite venture in renovating your home is your Kitchen. When arranging the design for your new kitchen, figure out what suits your lifestyle; you're developing needs and your feel. Continuously remember also that your kitchen is basic to the resale of your home, so plan carefully. Plan out not simply the expensive things, for example, apparatuses, flooring, cabinetry and counters yet the little subtleties that really make a design extraordinary such equipment, lighting, covered up and worked away and things that mirror your character and style. Consider whether you LOVE to cook (at that point include a nozzle over your oven), do you engage habitually (at that point put a box sink in the island), do you have an enormous family (at that point open up certain walls and truly make it the core of your home. The responses to these inquiries will manage the installations and apparatuses you decide for your kitchen.
When plotting out the design of the kitchen don't simply take the kitchen organizer or designers word that the space is ideal for you and your family. Cautiously analyze your arrangement and consider how to best amplify the space in your kitchen just as make your life simpler. Nobody knows your needs and the needs of your family just as you do. Shouldn't something be said about including a multi reason island with sinks stockpiling prep and seating? Shouldn't something be said about the new and shocking proficient sinks with pasta cookers worked in?
When discussing Kitchen design we are truly talking about decisions, hundreds and many decisions for each part of your kitchen. For instance, while choosing your ledges you can have tile, stone (the designer fave), marble (shocking however not kid cordial), strong surface, tempered steel (sleek and modern), wood, solid (ideal for a ultra modern townhouse or home), glass, overlay (the most moderate and promptly accessible) and some more, also the many choices inside every material. Try not to get overpowered by the decisions, consistently remember what works best for your style, your lifestyle and your BUDGET
A little kitchen can be the same amount of a work of craftsmanship as a major family kitchen. It just methods you need to plan and exploration twice as hard, however regularly they can be the most sensational on the grounds that you can put more cash per square foot and make higher evaluation determinations then you would with a major animal dwellingplace sized kitchen. Subtleties are what will make a little kitchen sizzle. Include pull our drawers with spotless floats and pull out parts and a twofold entryway storeroom with full inside access.

Jude's P.O.V
"Jude- holy hell, what the fuck?"
The sound of Vivi's voice shot me out of my unconscious state with a jolt, my eyes flying open to see her standing at the door to my room, mouth agape. "What?" I groused, my voice still hoarse from sleep as I propped myself up on my elbows, rubbing a hand over my eyes with a lazy swipe of fingers. She remained silent, stare wide and unblinking as slowly, she motioned to the spot next to me on the bed.
It was then I became acutely aware of a warm body wound around mine, arm slung over my waist and neck buried into my side. My eyes flickered down to the shock of raven black hair, a flash of memories quickly flooding back in an exhausting wave. A guttural noise of distaste fell from my lips.
"I told him to fucking sleep on the couch," I muttered, the comment more for myself or Vivi's benefit I didn't know. With a roughly placed hand, I shoved him off of me, making him moan softly in his sleep as he turned over onto his side, face burying into the mountain of pillows.
At least he had had the decency to keep his clothes on while we slept. Naked Cardan would have made for a far more difficult explanation.
I tossed the comforter from my body, sliding off of the bed and slowly making my way over to Vivi's side with reluctant, trudged steps. She arched a brow pointedly.
"He showed up here drunk and alone last night," I grunted, my eyes narrowing as I glanced back over to him. He was splayed out now in typically royal fashion, lips parted slightly and head tilted to the side.
"That's unexpected," Vivi commented mildly, her chin resting in her hand as she evaluated him. A moment of silence lingered. "You're not going to kill him, are you," she sighed with an air of despondence, as if resigned to having to accept that I might say yes.
My thoughts flickered to the events of the previous night, the press of my blade cutting into his throat. "No." My jaw set. "But he's going to wish he was dead."
She tilted her head to the side at that, contemplating as her smile grew. "Sounds appropriate. Just make sure you keep the screaming to a minimum, I don't want Oak getting any ideas about murder yet." I laughed lightly, sending an ache through my chest at the vibration. It felt so good to laugh, and I did so little of it since being exiled. My teeth grazed over my lower lip as she touched my shoulder lightly in a silent gesture of support before turning and walking back down the hallway.
Reluctantly, I let my eyes slowly travel back to Cardan. Somehow he was still fast asleep, not disturbed in the slightest by my movement or my conversation with Vivi.
He slept how a prince slept.
The thought left a tang of bitterness on my tongue, turning my lips. Briskly, I crossed the room with tight steps, making my way to the side of the bed and roughly shaking his shoulder. He mumbled something indiscernible, half rolling over and pawing at my arm. "Get up, now," I ordered, shoving his hand away and tearing the covers from his body. He whimpered in soft protest. His gaudy shirt had somehow fully unbuttoned during the night, the silky material hanging off of one shoulder and leaving the whole of his pale, muscular torso exposed. My mouth went dry.
Damn him.
"Cardan, you have two seconds before I throw you onto the floor," I sharply spoke. That seemed to grab his attention, his eyes cracking open a sliver.
"Good morning to you too," he grumbled, sullen and still slightly deluded from sleep.
"Yeah, good morning to you sleeping in my fucking bed," I snapped, my arms folding tightly over my chest, "I told you to sleep on the couch. Invade my privacy again and you'll be missing a finger or two when you wake up." His dark lashes finally fully fluttered open, focusing on me as his lips curved upwards just slightly.
"I seem to remember you invading my privacy once before. And before we were married, even, shame on you."
A twinge of unpleasantness turned in my mouth at the memory. The same night he had asked me to be his wife. The night before everything I had built for myself came crashing down in spectacular fashion.
"You're seemingly forgetting that I was considering slitting your throat last night, don't think that that option is off the table yet," I narrowed my eyes, jaw clenching. His smirk faded quickly back to a grim line in response, though he remained silent. Turning on my heels, I strode over to my closet, an invisible hand curling around my heart and squeezing painfully as I pulled out a cardboard box. Old clothes that once belonged my mother and father, other bits and pieces of their possessions and our old life before Faerie were stuffed clumsily inside, full to the brim. I had shoved it away to the back of my closet in the bitter hope that the saying 'out of sight, out of mind' was true, though so far it had proven to be wrong. I pulled out a plain black t-shirt with some mortal band logo and black jeans, the material bunching in my grip for a brief moment as I stared down at it.
A tight exhale.
Balling the clothing up, I promptly threw the outfit at him, hitting him square in the chest with the bundle of material. His lip curled just slightly in distaste as he eyed the plain mortal clothes. "Get up and get dressed." The bite to my words was venomous, yet still didn't seem nearly enough to convey the mess of hate and loathing and anger still brewing at the back of my throat. I raised a brow when he made no move to comply, the charcoal lining his eyes smudged in dark circles, contributing to the slightly haunted look gracing his features.
"You have five minutes." My smile was bitterly sweet. "I don't think you'll like the alternative if you're late."
***
"This wasn't the alternative option?"
Cardan looked positively revolted at our surroundings, trailing me with little enthusiasm as I strode down the sidewalk. "The alternative option was your heart being carved out of your chest by a butter knife," I hummed, unable to keep the smirk from curling at the corner of my lips as he continued to toss horrified glances at the cars zipping down the street and sullen glowers at every passerby that stared a second too long. Taking Cardan out with me for errands had been a snap decision, but the alternatives all seemed much worse at the time. Now in the presence of his stream of continuous complaints that never seemed to stop, I wasn't so sure.
"What are those?" he finally asked, eying the traffic and the obnoxious noises that came with it.
"Cars," I answered mildly.
"How do they move? Where are the horses? Why are they so loud?" he questioned in rapid succession, sounding especially perplexed along with a touch of distress. He let out an audible sigh of frustration when I ignored him, jogging forward a few steps to walk in line with me, matching my long strides with ease.
"What do you want from me, Jude?" he scowled, "You cannot drag me around your horrible mortal world and not even speak to me."
My steps didn't falter, though my hands curled into tight fists. "I'm the Queen of Elfhame, I can do whatever I want with my husband," I tossed back.
Something like surprise flickered in his eyes, he quickly fell to silence at my unexpected response. Good.
We strode through the Target parking lot, Cardan matching me step for step as we approached the sliding doors marking the entrance, a tense quiet enveloping us. I paused a few paces shy, making him jerk to a sudden halt. "Don't make a scene or I swear I will gut you in the middle of the store," I warned, pointedly tapping the knife strapped under my pants, the outline of the blade clear even through the relatively thick fabric.
"Now why would I do that, my sweet, darling Jude?" he spoke sarcastically, immediately flinching when I took a purposefully intimidating step towards him.
"Shut up and don't talk, you're giving me a headache," I groused, turning on my heels and promptly entering the building through the sliding doors. A rush of cool air conditioning made goosebumps scatter across my skin, my hand reaching up to glide over my arm in instinctive response.
"What-what is this magic?"
A quick glance over my shoulder revealed Cardan hadn't moved, staring at the door with wide, slightly fearful eyes. I would have laughed in any other context.
The High King of Elfhame, terrified by a set of doors.
"It's not magic, they can detect movement, now come on, we don't have all day," I sank into one hip, my arms folding over my chest as they began to slide shut again. The space between his brows crinkled slightly in both disapproval and concern as, slowly, he inched forward, steps small and cautious. The movement of the doors stuttered half way through closing, opening up again for him. He stepped across the threshold with a swift, terrified leap, a clear breath of relief escaping his chest as he made it through, shoulders slumping. "You're alive, congratulations," I rolled my eyes, snatching a basket from the stack by the entrance and quickly making my way towards the aisles of food.
"So what is this mortal store called? They have names, do they not?" he matched my strides with leisure, the question hinting both at disdain and the slightest measure of curiosity.
My brow furrowed. "Target." Cool air washed over my skin as we made our way down the produce aisle, brightly colored fruit spilling from every row and display, begging to be picked.
"Target? Like a target to kill?" he frowned in unease, an instinctive glance over his shoulder quickly following.
I snorted as I picked up a bundle of ripe bananas, placing them carefully in the basket dangling from my other hand. "No, Cardan, it's just a name. If I was going to have you shot I would be less obvious about it." He huffed in response, grabbing for an apple from the top of the mountain of fruit, promptly taking a generous bite of it. "Cardan, that's really not allowed," I spoke through gritted teeth, jaw clenched as he wiped the juice from his now glistening lips. The sight made my breath hitch in my chest, stuttering on instinct.
"A king can do what he wants," he lofted with an overly haughty air, proceeding to take another pointed bite.
"You're insufferable," I grumbled, steps smacking against the linoleum flooring as I turned on my heels and stalked down the rest of the row with clenched fists.
Even with him plucking at my last nerve with maddening precision, I wanted to shove him up against the wall and have my way with him. Maybe his idiocy was starting to rub off on me.
A storm cloud of brooding might as well have been thundering over my head as I wound up and down the aisles, snatching various foods we needed and throwing them into my basket with barely restrained aggression. Cardan, quite intelligently, chose to remain silent as he trailed me throughout the store.
That is, until we reached the row entirely dedicated to alcohol.
His charcoal black eyes immediately lit up, a smile beaming on his lips as he greedily drunk in the sight of bottles upon bottles of liquor stacked together. "Now this is more like it," he grinned, proceeding to begin to grab several of them without hesitation. The smirk that gradually worked its way up my lips as I regarded him almost immediately made him still, eyes narrowing in suspicion. "What?"
My shoulders lifted in a mockingly innocent shrug. "Nothing. Besides the fact that you're too young to buy alcohol here. Sobriety is not going to look good on you, I can tell you that." The expression that flashed across his elegant features could only be described as one of horror.
"We can't get drunk?"
I shook my head, humming in smug delight as satisfaction coursed through my veins. "This is outrageous, I am a King and I will do what I want, no mortal is going to keep me from drinking," he glowered in a childlike manner, seemingly dangerously close to stomping his foot in indignation.
"Unless you want to be put in jail, which I wouldn't be at all opposed to seeing as then you'd be someone else's problem," I shrugged with an air of nonchalance.
His mouth twisted. "You have got to be joking, Jude. Please tell me you are utilizing your mortal aptitude for lying."
My head canted, my smirk deepening. "No, Cardan. What a shame, isn't it? Now let's go, I have everything I need." His shoulders slumped in sullen defeat, stacking the bottles back onto the shelf in slow, unenthusiastic succession.
My mind wandered in an attempt to tune out his grumbling as he trudged behind me, my lips turning in bare amusement. The thought of Cardan living in the mortal world was mildly hysterical. His mannerisms, the way he talked, the way he dressed, all starkly differentiated him from any normal human being. Whether he was wearing a crown or not, Cardan Greenbriar had an air of royalty that clung to him wherever he went. He would fit in about as well as I did. Or rather didn't.
"Jude. Jude. Jude."
The sharp tug on the sleeve of my shirt brought me back to reality with a series of blinks in rapid succession. Cardan's fingers lingered at my arm, tethering me in place as he gazed up at the make up display in pure awe. Eyeliner and mascara were stocked full on the shelves, the model in the picture adorned with a blend of green and blue sparkly eyeliner framed by dark lashes. "Look at the all the eyeliner Jude," he breathed.
"Do we really have to stop for everything that catches your eye, Cardan?" I bit out poisonously despite the warm amusement flickering in my chest at the sight of him so excited.
"But..." he trailed off, wide eyes looking back and forth from me to the display almost pleadingly. A sharp breath of frustration emptied from my lungs. I was supposed to be furious with him, not having my heart melt at the sight of him giving me puppy eyes.
Well, if I was going to kill him later, he might as well look beautiful while I was doing it.
"Fine. Pick one." My tone was coldly firm, making me proud at my level of control at not hinting at my true emotions.
His reaction was almost childlike as he clapped his hands together, releasing my arm in favor of perusing through the available selections.
One soon become a half dozen as he swiped every single color on the shelf, including one that was pure glitter. The smile he flashed me as our eyes met, his arms full of products, was dazzlingly charming.
"Do you know how expensive this stuff costs?" I raised a brow.
He rolled his eyes. "I'll pay you back in gold."
I didn't put much thought into responding to the fact that he would have to go back to Faerie to repay me, instead giving in with a soft grumble of dissent as he emptied the contents in his arms into the basket. "Now we're leaving. Nothing else," I scowled, making for the checkout line without a second glance his way.
Staying mad at Cardan Greenbriar was proving to be more difficult than I had thought.
***
The whole afternoon had passed without me being able to find the words to confront him. Ironically between the two of us, I was certainly the more cowardly. He had slumped onto the couch when we had gotten home, enduring me ignoring him in unusual silence. Then Vivi and Oak had come home, and promptly the silence became filled with Oak and Cardan's brotherly bonding, Oak quickly beginning to refer to him as Uncle Cardan.
I currently stood behind the kitchen counter, my eyes narrowed and my stare brooding as I watched them play games together on the coffee table. Vivi hovered next to me, a bemused look on her lips. "They seem to be getting along just fine, how about you?" she questioned mildly, her index finger pressed to her mouth.
My words were an almost unintelligible grumble. "He's the worst." She hummed in something like agreement, though didn't offer any verbal response as we both continued to stare in silence.
"Do you have any sixes?" Oak cheesed a wide, gap toothed grin at Cardan from behind his hand of cards. Cardan narrowed his eyes in playful suspicion as he promptly plucked a card from his stack, offering it to Oak between two fingertips.
"You must be cheating, it is impossible to be this good."
Oak giggled in response, shaking his head, "No, I'm just really good, Uncle Cardan."
My eyes tore away from them to try and subdue the sliver of warmth growing in my chest. "He comes in here and acts as if everything is all fucking okay, the nerve of his conceited ass." Vivi chuckled as I turned away, grumpily making my way over the the fridge and opening it for the sole purpose of finding the most unhealthy item of food inside. "I'm going to stab him in his sleep," I tossed over my shoulder, snatching a tub of ice cream and subsequently slamming the freezer door shut with a loud rattle.
"How about talking things out before getting all stabby?" Vivi asked, leaning against the counter and folding her arms over her chest, head tilting slightly.
"Why, so he can lie and manipulate me some more?" I snarked, snatching a spoon from the silverware drawer before digging into the untouched container of cookie dough ice cream. A quick flicker of eyes back to the living room found that Oak and Cardan's game had since been abandoned, cards scattered across the table as Oak sat atop the glass painting sparkly eyeliner onto Cardan's pale lids.
"Stop looking at Oak like you want to murder him for liking Cardan," Vivi laughed, tossing her head back with the sound.
I grumbled. "Why is he on his side, Cardan hasn't walked him to school or bought him groceries."
She evaluated me for a brief moment with glittering cat eyes. "There's no sides, Jude, there's just what you want," she toned evenly, "What happened to the Jude that wasn't afraid to go out and take what she wanted?"
My teeth found my lower lip, digging in hard.
What happened?
Cardan happened to her.
"You know what? We're going to give you two some much needed alone time," Vivi decided promptly with a wide, wicked grin.
My breath caught. "No, Vivi, don't you dare," I warned, panic creeping into my voice that was pointless to try and hide.
"Oak, let's go to the park, Cardan and Jude need some adult time!" Vivi called over her shoulder, her smirk impossible to miss as she quickly sped from the kitchen with my arm held tight in her grasp, dragging me out before subsequently grabbing Oak's coat and tossing it at him. Oak pouted, brows crinkling together in displease.
"But I'm putting sparkles on Uncle Cardan," he protested, words muffled by his bottom lip jutting out.
"You can do that later, right now we're going to the park," Vivi sternly responded, prompting him to sullenly toss down the eyeliner pen, rising from the table and trudging to her side. Against my own will, me and Cardan's eyes locked, everything else seemingly fading away to soft and muted, the only thing in crisp focus being him and the way he was looking at me.
Hunger. Exhaustion. Yearning. A painful mirror of myself.
At the sound of the front door slamming shut, my heart immediately leapt into my throat, pulse racing and breaths shallow. "Are you going to talk to me? Jude?" Cardan questioned, words dull and tired with defeat. Gradually, my stare focused on him, lounging on our worn leather couch like a throne, sparkly eyeliner and beaten black band t-shirt somehow only enhancing his beauty.
"I don't have anything to say to you, Cardan," I returned a touch too breathlessly.
His eyes hardened, a spiteful glint to them that was hauntingly familiar to the countless times that he had tormented me. It felt as if I was frozen in place, feet rooted to the floor underneath me as he stood up, walking around the couch so he was standing mere inches from my body.
"So you're going to stay here forever then, where you're nothing."
The string of words was as harsh as the crack of a hand across my face, leaving me reeling.
"Better here than with you," I spat in bitter retaliation, an instinctive reflex.
He was so close I could feel his breath on my cheek, sending a trill of fear slithering down my spine. "You're going to stay here because of your stubbornness, just to spite me? Just to deny that you care about me, or at least that you did once? You don't belong here, Jude. Both of us know it."
There was no way I could win. The realization was infuriatingly staggering.
"Where do I belong then? Tell me, King of Elfhame, if you are so all knowing and powerful," I snarled, lips curling.
He didn't hesitate. "You belong with me."
My breath hitched, surprising anger surging through my veins like wildfire.
"And why is that, Cardan? Tell me why I belong with you, you pathetic coward."
He caught my wrists, cutting off the shoving movement I was halfway through attempting. His slender fingertips scraped into my skin, his words twisted and raw.
"Because I love you."

How To Review A Manuscript Journal editors identify 10 key steps for would-be reviewers
APA Monitor on Psychology, May 2018
By Chris Palmer
Tumblr media
While your first thought may be, "I don’t have time for this," reviewing manuscripts can be a great opportunity. Reviewers get an early view of what’s happening in their fields, better insight into how the review process works and a chance to network, all of which can foster your career, says Rose Sokol-Chang, PhD, publisher of APA journals.
Potential reviewers land on the radar of journal editors in a variety of ways: They may have recently landed a tenure-track position, been lead author on a standout paper or even given a compelling talk at a conference.
But how, exactly, does a reviewer approach the manuscript-review process? Here are 10 keys from editors of APA journals to guide you:
1 GET TO KNOW THE REVIEW FORMAT At its core, a manuscript review is made up of three sections:
▪ The rating form. The editor will provide you a form for rating the manuscript on a predetermined list of attributes that will lead you to answer the central question: Do you think this journal should publish the manuscript?
▪ A note to the authors. This section—usually one to two pages—constitutes the bulk of the review. It summarizes the manuscript’s main points and includes general comments about the paper’s strengths and weaknesses. It also provides the authors with constructive feedback as well as a road map for arriving at the best possible version of their article.
▪ A note to the editor. This brief text conveys confidential comments to be read only by the journal editor, including whether any element of the paper is beyond the reviewer’s area of expertise.
2 FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE JOURNAL After you have read the manuscript—and before you start writing—scour the journal and pay attention to how the articles are presented. Take note of the formatting, the order of the sections and the level of detail expected in the articles. Be sure that you have a clear understanding of the journal’s intended audience. Editors will often give you a list of instructions for your review as well. Tailor your review precisely to fit that journal. Also, find out the journal’s policy regarding reviewer anonymity. Some journals keep both the authors and the reviewers anonymous, while others give both parties the option to remain anonymous.
3 KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR Many journals provide reviewers with criteria for evaluating each section of a manuscript. In general, however, ask yourself if the article meets the following key benchmarks:
Overall, it makes a meaningful contribution to the field.
The science underlying the main idea is strong.
There are no significant gaps in the cited literature.
The results have not been previously published.
The research design is appropriate.
The right kinds of participants were used.
The sample size was adequate.
The correct statistics were used.
The interpretation of the data makes sense.
The findings are important and interesting to the journal’s readers.
The methods are explained well enough that the experiments can be replicated.
The discussion section integrates the findings with relevant theory rather than simply rehashing the introduction.
The writing is high quality.
In certain situations, some of these attributes may have an outsize impact. For example, a small sample size in a study performed with a difficult-to-study population, such as centenarians, will be given more leniency than a similar study using a small pool of college undergraduates as subjects. "Innovation and novelty need to be recognized," says Antonia Abbey, PhD, editor of Psychology of Violence.
4 ACCEPT, REJECT OR REVISE At the end of your process, you will recommend whether the journal should accept the manuscript as is, reject it outright or ask the authors to revise and resubmit the article. Unless you accept the manuscript as is—an extremely rare decision—you need to suggest ways to improve the paper for resubmission.
You also may choose to weigh in on whether the article would be a better fit for another publication. "The manuscript might be really good," Sokol-Chang says, "but perhaps not for that particular journal." An example would be if you’re reviewing a very technical manuscript for a broad journal such as American Psychologist, which focuses on major developments across all of psychology. "In your note to the author, you should feel free to make suggestions about the best place to resubmit the manuscript," Sokol-Chang adds.
5 MAP OUT A PLAN Having a set process for conducting your review can make the experience less daunting. William Stoops, PhD, editor of Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology, has developed a three-day process over the years that allows him to be deliberate and thoughtful without being rushed. On day one, he reads the manuscript through once without making comments or taking notes. "I sit at my desk, and I don’t have a pen in my hand; I don’t have anything. I just read it," he says. On day two, he marks up the manuscript with all his comments. On day three, he completes the rating form and types up his notes to the authors and the editor. Stoops came by this process through trial and error, and he says it may not suit everyone. "Everybody works differently," he says. "You just need to identify what works for you."
6 KNOW YOUR STATISTICS (AND IF YOU DON’T, JUST SAY SO) Many reviewers struggle with statistics, says Richard Gilman, PhD, editor of School Psychology Quarterly. Statistical methods have become so sophisticated in recent years that he requires at least one of the two reviewers to be a researcher or clinician with a strong statistical background. "Sometimes, a reviewer knows that the statistics are beyond them," he says. "So, they have a hard time formulating what their issues are with the manuscript." In these cases, the reviewer can still offer valuable feedback. "If the paper’s not landing well, separate yourself from the statistics and point out where the difficulties are," Gilman adds. He also suggests that the reviewer include a note for the editor if he or she feels that the statistics need to be looked at by an expert.
7 THINK BIG PICTURE While it’s important that details such as references are properly formatted, you’ve been asked to review the manuscript because of your subject-area expertise. So, dial back the copyediting and focus on the authors’ overall presentation of their research.
Sticking to the fundamentals will also keep your feedback to a manageable length, preferably no more than one to two single-spaced pages. "No one wants to read a four-page review," says Gilman. Besides, the small details will all change if the manuscript goes through substantive editing, he adds.
8 MEET YOUR DEADLINE Many journals operate on a 30-day turnaround. Some APA journals even request that reviews be returned within 21 days. Editors take their turnaround time seriously, so be upfront about whether you have time to complete the review, which typically requires one to four hours. If you do have to decline, says Stoops, a quick "no" is preferred so the editor can move on to ask someone else. "A lot of invitations to review have an expiry date," Stoops adds. "For my journal, we give folks four days to say yes."
If you do accept the invitation, stick to the deadline. "Nothing is more frustrating than waiting on reviewers to get their comments back," says Gilman.
If something comes up that will prevent you from making your deadline, it’s important to communicate that to your editor. Gilman says he’s happy to oblige if a reviewer needs more time: "I just want them to be in touch."
9 BE HONEST AND UPFRONT When an editor sends out a manuscript for review, he or she is doing so with a fair amount of trust. That means, among other things, that you cannot share the manuscript with anyone and that you must keep your thoughts about the unpublished manuscript to yourself.
The editor also expects the reviewer to report any potential conflicts of interest. The editor may not know, for example, that you reviewed the grant that funded the study. So, be sure to reveal that information and whether you feel you can be impartial. Often the authors’ names are not included, but if you become aware of conflicts, you should communicate with the editor. Also, if you don’t think you’re qualified to review a manuscript for any reason, communicate that to the editor, as well as what you would be interested in reviewing in the future.
"The editor may ask you to reconsider," Stoops says. "Or he may just say, ‘OK, I’ll keep you in mind if I see something that better fits your interests.’"
10 BE CONSTRUCTIVE AND KIND You’ve gone through the manuscript carefully and you’re ready to bullet point every flaw. But remember to lead with the positive.
"No paper is so bad that you can’t provide some sort of positive comments," says Gilman. Of course, you also need to deliver critical feedback, says Mary Beth Kenkel, PhD, editor of Translational Issues in Psychological Science. "Reviewers need to think of themselves not as judges, but as educators helping authors to improve their manuscripts by giving very clear, constructive notes."

Hello! I want to know what are your headcanonds for the perfect girl for the boys + leiftan
This is such a temptingrequest… but I have this uncanny feeling that if I answer this, I’ll startanother witch-hunt on Eldarya’s Tumblr community. >_>
…What the hell. I’ll do itanyway. Witches are the ones who have all the fun. ;)
For impartiality’s sake, I wrote an analysis instead of a headcanon. (Sorry, Anon.) But this particular analysis is based off the in-game dialogue options (up to Episode 11) that score the most approval points with each fellow, as well as the inverse of the dialogue options that earn the most disapproval from them, and other observations from scenes where they’re clearly demonstrating anger/disgust/pleasure/etc. without the MC making specific dialogue choices. All of this data information is then compiled into a rough, composite image of their ideal partner’s personality.
Still, if there’s anything in this analysis that you want to add to, correct, or pick a bone at, go right ahead. I’m only up to Episode 11 after all, and primarily on Nevra’sroute; my perspective of what makes these men hot for someone is by no means complete. ^_^
Edit: Made a few changes to Leiftan’s entry after Episode 17′s shenanigans, but the body of evidence used still ranges from Episodes 4 to 11.
Ezarel
His Ideal Partner:‘The Idealistic Nerd’, who is…
1. An Openhearted Optimist…
Ezarel is easily boredby decorum, so what’ll pique his interest is someone who’s sincere andeven rather open with their emotions… and casual enough to grouse back (infront of company) whenever he taunts them. (Ep.5, 11) If they start off a little shy at the beginning, then he knows that he’seffective they’ve learned to drop their facade around him, which heapproves of. (Ep. 8)
Though he’s a committedcynic, Ezarel appreciates a partner who’s naturally optimistic about people andnot just because they’re easy targets. A person who believes in others’potential, who refrains from evaluating on first impressions, and is willing togive even clueless or abrasive characters credit for trying, can inspire him tosoften his own opinions. (Ep. 8, 9) Notto mention it’s gratifying for him to know that they believe he has a heart deep down. (Ep. 5, 9)
Because he avoidssentiment like the plague, Ezarel also benefits from a partner who’s much moredirect with their affections, and isn’t easily discouraged by his off-the-cuff ‘rejections’.(Ep. 8, 9, 10) To coax out his ownheart, they shouldn’t be afraid to bare theirs repeatedly.
2. Who Practices Humility and Respect towards Others…
This prickly elf willonly tolerate someone who’s (very) considerate: who’s civil, respects workplaceconduct, controls their temper at work, and is constantly mindful about what might inconvenience others. (Ep. 4, 5) And will never finish all the rationed honey. (Ep. 9) If they automatically respect his space when he’s working, then he’sinclined to keep them around. (Ep. 5)
A decisivelack of ego is what generally wins his respect and assures him that this new face is (perhaps)worthwhile company. Someone who isn’t presumptuous about their status, knowledge or skills, but instead studies from and respects the existing systemwon’t find it hard to get along with Ezarel. (Ep. 5, 8, 9) If they’re also aware of their bad habits andphysical quirks, and can freely admit them, then he’ll find it difficult not to get to know them. In his own way.(Ep. 8, 9)
3. And Keeps a Durable Sense of Humor…
Let’s be honest: Ezarelis still a child at heart who gets along best with someone who’s a sitting duckfor his jokes. A partner who has a very literal– even innocent– cast of mindwill rapidly become his new favorite target. (Perhaps) in an affectionatesense. (Ep. 6, 8, 9, 10)
And once the ball isdropped, he prefers a victim who’s easygoing enough to not take his jokes/pranks/critique personally. If their defaultreaction to embarrassment or strange setbacks is reflection instead of anger, then he’s bound to form a good opinionof them. (Ep. 4, 7, 10) Not thatthat will stop his assault.
4. Who is Reliable…
Despite his incessantjokes, Ezarel keeps high ethical standards for the people closest to him (usually). So his partner needs to prove themselves more scrupulous than average: thoroughwith their work, self-sufficient, naturally cautious, and (very) responsible inowning up their mistakes whenever they err. (Ep.4, 5, 7, 8) Diligence, care, and honesty are qualities that he respects orat least can’t quite shred with his jokes. (Ep. 3, 7, 8, 9) And above all, they need to be consistent withupholding their own ethical standards, for themselves and others; hypocrisy issomething Ezarel finds difficult to swallow. (Ep. 7, 8)
His partner also needsto be obedient able to trust his leadership and defer to his skills whenthe situation calls for it. If they notice and respect him for being meticulouswith his work, then he knows they won’t question his words when he’s deadly-serious.(Ep. 5)
5. And a Believer in Logic and the Sciences…
Though he enjoysmessing with gullible unsuspicious minds, Ezarel can’t actually abide peopleincapable of reasoning out an answer. So his partner needs to have no passingfamiliarity with logic: able to observe patterns, notice discrepancies, and makerational deductions based on available data. (Ep. 5, 9) For critical tasks, he especially values a partner who seesthe import of collecting and synthesizing information, and can separate primaryfrom secondary objectives. (Ep. 9)
A fellow nerd is alsoan ideal conversational partner in Ezarel’s world: someone who doesn’t veeroff-track in a discussion, and prefers to spend time on substantial topics (likethe sciences, medicine, esoterica, why people don’t get along with people, etc.) (Ep. 7, 8, 9) Though theycan, of course, waste time trading sarcasm. And if they can jibe at resident airheadstogether, then he knows he has found a friend in them. (Ep. 9, 11)
6. Who Takes a Dignified Stand when Threatened…
This aristocrat can’ttolerate a partner who snaps back at him or outwits him. (Ep. 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11) So if anything, theymust be a diplomat at heart: who believes in maintaining harmony in thelong-run, dissolves grudges, and remains calm but firm in reminding him to drophis jokes. (Ep. 5) Whenever Ezarel stepstoo far (which he is aware of, dimly,in the back of his mind), or someone else does, he respects a partner who willstand their ground and calmly point out a fallacy in the way he/X-party treatsothers. (Ep. 4, 5) And let him salvagehis pride before he walks off. (Ep. 4, 9) Their ability to wield reason as a form of defiance can complement his own approachin answering threats with logic (minus the barbed insults).
7. But Loosens Up for Loved Ones…
If he can’t clownaround with his partner, then they might as well not date at all. PoorEwelein. Ezarel enjoys the company of someone who enjoys receiving– anddispensing– screwball sarcasm in the name of innocent fun, and flirtation. (Ep. 5, 8, 9, 11) That’s his secondlanguage, after all.
Once they become morefamiliar with him, he can’t say no to an impish partner who pokes fun at hisfoibles that he’s aware of (i.e. his pride, incessant smart mouth, pretentiousness, etc.). This, to him, is permission to return the favor and sparka friendly war of words, which he loves. (Ep.9, 10, 11)
All fun and jokesaside, perhaps the main prerequisite for Ezarel’s partner is the ability to respect his personal space and decisions withoutquestion. Allowing himself to be physically and emotionally vulnerable isstill a (high) hurdle for him, so patience and a good sense of humor arenecessities. (Ep. 5, 9)
8. …While Enjoying a Natural Touch.
Ezarel has a botanical nerd’sdeep appreciation for the outdoors, and an aristocrat’s belief that he has excellent taste. Thus his partneralso needs to see the beauty of old growth, wild terrain, and rambling Zen-stylegardens… and isn’t afraid of a profusion of pink. (Ep. 5, 6) And if they can avoid disturbing the peace with theirvoice, instead keeping a gentle, dulcet manner of speaking… he might even letthem talk all day instead of him. (Ep.8)
Nevra
His Ideal Partner: “TheSensible Secretary”, who is…
1. An Introvert…
Nevra appears to bedrawn to someone more reserved than he is: who doesn’t mind if he takes theinitiative, and whom he needs to win over, court, tease, and cajole. (Ep. 3, 4, 5, 11)
Though he admires anindependent-minded partner, someone who’s still a touch inexperienced orcautious in navigating the world always brings out his tender side. Especiallyif they must take a moment to swallow their pride and (shyly) approach him forhelp; that’s his chance to swoop in as their hero (or their sugar daddy).(Ep. 3, 4, 11)
2. With an Analytical, even Skeptical Mindset…
He’s definitely notenamored with naivete. Nevra values someone who’s perceptive: who knows how tosift carefully through available information, second-guesses initialassumptions, identifies (really) half-baked plans or attempts at short-changing them, and proceeds carefully if there’s a sore lack of facts. (Ep. 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11) They also need to be able to respect andpreserve the truth, instead of adding to the mire of misinformation; then he’llstart seeing them as one of the few, reliable people he can speak to. (Ep. 7) And if they’re well-read, or at least enjoy collecting facts, then they’ll be one of the still-fewer people he truly enjoys talking to. (Ep. 4, 9)
That said, this rakerespects people who don’t allow themselves to be easy targets for his charms. If they don’t automatically swallow his slick one-liners, but (politely)question or poke holes in them instead, it spurs him to try even harder to winthem over. A smart lover is infinitely more interesting. (Ep. 3, 4, 8, 9)
Still, he won’t say noto a few slip-ups that he can capitalize on with his jokes. It’s more fun ifnobody’s perfect. (Ep. 8, 10) Andhe needs to be told he’s a bad boy… whom they love anyway.
3. Who is Assertive, but Civil…
Given how much he likesto maneuver people, Nevra responds well to someone who’s confident in speakingtheir mind. But as a bred gentleman who values good manners, he responds evenbetter to a person who can defend their interests in a civil, classy way (i.e.doesn’t retaliate with insult) and habitually pays respect to the partiesthey’re negotiating with. (Ep. 3, 5, 6,8, 11) A little sarcasm though is always nice in his book. (Ep. 3, 5, 8)
If they refrain frompegging him as a lecher, liar, or a man with a football-stadium ego (whichis actually true), then he’s compelled to give them a similar second chance(and more) to earn his affections. (Ep. 3,5, 6, 8, 10, 11) Because believe it or not, that flirtatious front is intendedto win people’s affection, not repelthem.
4. And Naturally Driven…
An ambitious man bynature, Nevra automatically identifies with someone who shares a strong workethic: who believes in applying themselves, finishing a job well, and seeking their own opportunities. (As long as they’re not grasping for his position.) (Ep. 5, 9) He generally thinks well of people who refuse to sitidle, and especially well if they’reunafraid to put themselves on the line for goals that matter to them (likewinning his heart). (Ep. 5)
Pure ambition thoughonly goes so far in charming him. He respects a committed team player more thana lone wolf: someone who thinks about the best ways to contribute to a groupeffort, and is mature enough to look beyond themselves and their own interestswhen faced with setbacks. (Ep. 5, 9, 11)That, to him, is the mark of a truly respectable person.
Though he has areputation as a generous man who spoils loved ones rotten, Nevraultimately prefers someone who isn’t clingy and tries to rely on themselvesfirst instead of his resources. Which makes his surprise gifts that muchmore poignant. (Ep. 4)
5. But Trustworthy as a Person…
Honesty goes a verylong way with this spymaster (who deals with backbiting snakes on a dailybasis, or people who’re detrimentally concerned with their image). (Ep. 3, 6, 9) So someone who’s moreprincipled than vain–who can accept responsibility, values keeping their word(or at least doesn’t rescind it easily), and comes clean about personaldifficulties or the limits of their skills in trying times– is a rarity in hiseyes. (Ep. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11) Agenuinely down-to-earth person is a refreshing change in his world.
6. And a Calming Influence…
Being the unlikelychaperone of his motley social circles, Nevra doesn’t have much taste for (other)drama kings/queens. So he appreciates somebody calm: who also believes in maintaininggroup harmony, is unlikely to panic when dropped in hot water (especially on amission), and can promote an easy, informal atmosphere with others (even if itmeans putting a smile on their face after a social blunder). (Ep. 8, 9, 11) And given his ownmischievous streak, they better know how to accept jokes with aplomb. (Ep. 8, 10)
When it’s his turn toplay the drama king, this proud vampire benefits from a partner who’s bothpatient and practical (and doesn’t bombard him with repeat lectures). (Ep. 8, 9) They need to be able toweather his errors and his bursts of anger tactfully, and willing to open thepath to reconciliation right after an argument (he’s especially happy if theygive him a chance to make matters up to them). (Ep. 6, 9) A person who stays calm for the benefit of others andsmooths over conflicts quickly inspires him to recover his composure and followsuit. Because even if he catalyzed an argument, he’s never happy if others are unhappy with him.
7. Who’s Playful but Loyal in Demonstrating their Love…
He’s a blatantlysensual man, so he enjoys someone who physically isn’t shy around him. And isgenerous with hugs. (Ep. 8, 9, 10)But they need to know how to keep the game interesting: he can’t say no to acoquet who baits him with sweetness and offers of affection, then dodges beforehe can return the favor. (Ep. 8, 11)
They also need to begood sports at being teased themselves, willing (or transparent enough) to showhim when they’re feeling possessive or horny affectionate. Otherwise, they won’t last one week with him. (Ep.8, 10, 11)
But all fun and gamesaside, Nevra benefits most from a partner who enjoys his company beyondthe sex (Ep. 9), and invites him to relaxat the end of the day, instead of pushing him to continue exceeding others’standards. (Ep. 11) The idea ofthem loving him no matter what willmake his head reel with romantic couplets.
8. …Without Ever Losing their Sharp Sense of Style.
Nevra is a vain, materialistic man who’s enamored with the ‘finer things’ in life. So heappreciates a partner who’s a bit of a sophisticate themselves: familiar withluxury, fine foods, the benefits of a stiff drink after a mission, theprinciples of dressing well… and the chicness of dark colors. (Ep. 6, 8, 9) Being kinky, or at leastopen to experimentation in the bedroom, is an added bonus. (Ep. 11)
Valkyon
Ideal Partner: ‘TheSavvy Team Captain’, who is
1. An Extrovert with a Curious Streak…
Valkyon is the furthestthing from a social butterfly, so he benefits from a naturally-expressivepartner who never lacks for cheer or energy.(Ep. 5, 8) He always appreciates a person who can generate a convivialatmosphere, and isn’t afraid to take the plunge in leading conversations. (Ep. 10)
Though he’s morepractical than curious, Valkyon will never say no to someone naturallyinquisitive: who wants to learn about the world around them, the plight ofpeople abroad… and characters who don’t automatically open up to them. (Ep. 4, 5, 8) How else will he starttalking to them? In his book, a curious person is a person who isn’t afraidto care.
2. Who’s Never Shy in Standing Up for Themselves…
As a veteran soldier,Valkyon prizes assertiveness in his partner: someone who doesn’t necessarilyseek conflict, but knows exactly how and when to stand up for themselves, refusing to abide rudeness or mistreatment for long. (Ep. 8) A person who’s straightforward in expressing what’s ontheir mind, and isn’t easily intimidated by forceful characters (or bluntand poker-faced ones), quickly earns his respect. (Ep. 5, 8) And if they take a droll view of people with egos, servingback a little snark, then he knows they’re someone who’ll understand his jokes.(Ep. 10)
They need to be morethan mere talk though. Valkyon also appreciates a partner who’s able andwilling to defend themselves when physically-threatened, and won’t lose theirresolve even in risky circumstances. (Ep.3) Few things are sexier than another warrior.
3. And Keeps a Powerful Sense of Duty…
This man is aborderline workaholic who runs his life by-the-book. So what he naturally looksfor is a partner who shares his belief system: somebody responsible whopromptly finishes tasks entrusted to them, and holds themselves fully-accountablefor their mistakes, especially if the welfare of others rests in their hands. (Ep. 5, 6, 9) A disciplined person whounderstands protocol, doesn’t react petulantly to orders they disagree with, and can put aside personal impulses or schemes for the good of the unit, will also find no obstacles in getting along with him. (Ep. 5, 8, 9, 10). Trust is valuable currency, and Valkyon prefersa partner who doesn’t spend it lightly. (Ep.3)
His ethical standards thoughgo beyond mere unit discipline (fortunately). Valkyon takes a liking tosomeone who’s also a protector in spirit: who genuinely enjoys contributing tothe community, lends their aid without repayment, and won’t shrink from firewhen protecting the defenseless. (Ep. 7,8, 9) He can’t help but salute someone with a (fierce) conscience.
4. Without an Accompanying Ego…
As a man who’s sparingwith his praise, Valkyon gets along best with someone who isn’t needy, but insteadworks to gain approval. (Ep. 9) And whokeeps a realistic perspective on themselves, unafraid to acknowledge theirflaws and personal limits when needed; humility and self-awareness are marks ofcharacter in his eyes. Only then is he inclined to praise them. (Ep. 5, 8)
Because of his earlylessons in self-reliance, Valkyon automatically respects someone similarlyindependent in accomplishing tasks, and who dislikes accruing personal debtwith others. (Ep. 3, 4, 5) Also, theybetter be unafraid of getting their hands dirty when trusted with important (butunpleasant) work; he has no patience for people who distance themselves fromthe frontlines or refuse to pull their own weight. (Ep. 9)
5. Who’s a Natural Tactician and Pragmatist…
As a committedlogician, Valkyon approves of someone who knows how to strategize: who canidentify the most practical course of action, work around logistical concerns, andkeep a higher perspective on where time and effort are best invested. (Ep. 5) Somebody who at least tries to thinktheir decisions through is, in his words, welcome company. (Ep. 9) And if they can extract useful details from even scantinformation, then he’s just impressed. (Ep.4)
Still, even he knowsplans have their limits. So he appreciates someone practical enough to withholdexpectations before entering the field, and who can revise opinions under unforeseendevelopments. (Ep. 9) Mentaladaptability, to him, is what matters in the long run.
6. But Respectful and Observant of Others’ Feelings…
Valkyon subducts hisown feelings like a tectonic plate isn’t emotionally-savvy, so his idealpartner needs to be someone sensitive to the emotional temperature in the room…and knows when to back off if a party is silently simmering. (Ep. 5, 11) Since he doesn’t appreciate pushiness, it’s imperativethat his partner knows how to respect others’ privacy, decisions, and silence. (Ep. 4, 8)
It’s been hardwiredinto his system to remain stoic under duress, so a partner who’s respectful andaccepting of others’ fears– and physical vulnerabilities– would be a hugesource of support. (Ep. 5, 6) And ifthey’re openminded enough to avoid drawing early conclusions on others’strength, then he might even open up to them. (Ep. 5, 6)
If his partner is caught in a disagreement or under duress, whatValkyon respects is the ability to negotiate in a civil manner: heeding andrespecting what other parties have to say, before submitting a logicalargument. Though he can’t say no to a little emotional wheedling if they’reclose. (Ep. 9) Someone whodoesn’t react with anger when baited, but instead stands their ground andultimately rises above provocations (with a sarcastic roll of the eyes)is sure to earn his approval. (Ep. 10)
7. And Patient when Caring for Him…
This man is stilllearning how to ease out of his ‘I Am an Instrument’ mentality. So heappreciates someone patient but persistent in learning about him, (Ep. 8, 11) and even a littleprotective; (Ep. 9, 11) who showsthat they care for him as a person.
Also, they need to beforgiving of his lack of expressiveness and social obtuseness. (Ep. 9, 10) In fact, a partner whodoesn’t mind sitting together quietly, without badgering him into aconversation, is sure to stoke his affections. (Ep. 9)
Valkyon doesn’t ask formuch from his partner once they get familiar, but he’s unwavering on what hewants. To start, they shouldn’t be afraid to speak to him honestly, or trusthim with their feelings. (Ep. 5, 8) Andthey should never neglect to tell him if they’re venturing out alone(especially to hostile or uncharted territory); he’s a worrier who fiercelyguards the few loved ones he has left. (Ep.9) Because though he’s tight-lipped about it, Valkyon ultimately needsassurance that his partner won’t ever leave him.
8.    …While Asking for Nothing More than Quality.
Valkyon is adown-to-earth man with no intention to entertain divos/divas. So he’smost comfortable with someone who also shares minimalist aesthetic tastes, andappreciates the subtler luxuries: like quality craftsmanship, lastingmaterials, utility, wholesome flavors, and plenty of open space and light. (Ep. 6, 8) And if they’re unafraid to gooutside with whatever they happen to be wearing at the moment, that’s one lessheadache for him. (Ep. 5)
Leiftan
His Ideal Partner: ‘The Warm-Hearted Counselor’, who is…
1. AGentle, Compassionate Soul…
Leiftan spends enough time dealing with cynical, high-strungand/or sadistic colleagues when he’s not off on unpleasant missions of his own. So someone naturally kind, who sees no problem withdemonstrating concern for others, and can be emotionally-affected by whathappens to innocents on the field, will be a ray of sunshine in his life. (Ep.9) Their willingness to see the positives in others– and actpositively despite everything– will remind him that there’s still plenty ofgood left in the world. (Ep. 10) No need to let that bleaknessin his heart take over then.
At heart, Leiftan is aproud man who won’t hesitate to defend what he holds dear (or what he haschosen to associate himself with) from censure. So he deeply-appreciates apartner who isn’t critical by nature, but instead makes an effort to understandothers’ positions first… and if necessary, is willing to give credit fortrying. (Ep. 8, 9, 11)
2. Who’sa Natural Diplomat…
He of all people knows the importance of compromise and keepingcool in a crisis; drama rarely has its uses for negotiations. So he’ll begrateful to find a soul who favors a peaceable, constructive, and above all mature approach to problems, and iswilling to make the first gesture for a diplomatic solution even if they’re notthe ones at fault. (Ep. 8, 9) He’s especially happy if they canfinish with a kind touch: not beating on others for their mistakes, butassuring other parties that matters will be all right… once they reach asolution. (Ep. 9, 11) This gentleman (for the most part)believes in finishing negotiations cleanly, and so should his partner.
Leiftan also finds it hard to resist someone with a healthysense of humor, who knows how to crack (goofy) jokes to diffuse tensions. (Ep.10) That’snot his strong suit, after all. Laughterreally is the best medicine, and he doesn’t get enough of it.
3. AndDiscreet in Managing their Feelings…
Despite how freely he volunteers his help, counsel, and motherly affections for those who’ve caught his eye, Leiftanapproves most of characters who take the mature stance with their emotions: whodon’t automatically complain or burden him with their woes, but are open enoughto admit that something is wrong, and actively look for waysto solve their own dilemmas. (Ep. 5, 10) Then he starts hitting them with hisadvice. He respects those who loathecausing a fuss, but are still graceful in accepting help if it means reaching asolution. (Ep. 10)
And given how scant his free time is, he definitely prefers aconsiderate partner who dislikes imposing on his schedule. (Ep. 5) Or prying into confidentialdiscussions. (Ep. 4)
That’s not to say hedoesn’t approve of assertiveness. In fact, Leiftan appreciates someone who’ssimple and straightforward in stating the facts when they’re (severely) tested. To him, that shows an admirable level of trust and dignity (regardless of whatthey actually say). (Ep. 9)
4. Who’sMethodical with Tasks…
He’s a man who believes in checks, system, and protocol; evenwhen he’s prepared to unleash a little chaos, his actions have to follow alogical procedure. So if his partner displays a similar level of cautionand method on entering new situations, he’ll be much less inclined to worry forthem. Orlecture them. (Ep. 5)
On the whole, he approves of an organized partner who likeshaving a system to answer to and doesn’t shy away from paperwork. The Guardcan often be a mess, so it’s reassuring for Leiftan to know there’sone person he can rely on to do things properly. (Ep. 8)
5. BecauseThey’re Passionate about their Work…
Few things bring a smile out of him more than seeing real passionat play: someone who enthusiastically believes in their work and the goodthey’re doing. (Ep. 7) And a partner who also reflects deeplyabout their objective and the progress of the mission– beyond the surfacedetails– won’t find it hard to earn his admiration. (Ep. 9)Knowing idealism touches him because he has sacrificed his own sappiness long ago, and missesit.
6. Who’sGenerous with their Affections…
He’s a secretive man with a morbid past, murkier goals, and thusvery few outlets left for his tenderfeelings. Which means that when he doesfind a vent for his affections, his sentimentality is fit to rival Nevra’s.Thus, Leiftan appreciates a partner with a healthy sense of romance, whowelcomes his classically-chivalrous gestures along with the more suggestiveones and encourages his capacity for tenderness. (Ep. 10, 11) Andwho isn’t against crying leaning on his shoulder once he offers it to them. (Ep.8, 12)
But as much as heenjoys dispensing affection for his few loved ones and being needed by them, Leiftanprobably benefits more from someone who looks after him: who’llencourage him to sit down, share his stories, actually eat, andenjoy people’s company. (Ep. 10, 11) Because he’s accustomedto operating alone and sublimating his own problems, someone who demonstratesconcern for his welfare, and wants to connect with him, willleave a powerful impression. (Ep. 9, 10, 11)
7. …WhileNever Forgetting the Simple Joys in Life.
For Leiftan, moments of true peace tend to be few and farbetween; he rarely has the time (or will) to let himself go. So somebody just alittle whimsical, who knows to appreciate the simple pleasures in life (likelying down on the forest floor) and won’t hesitate to take them, can inspirehim to do the same. (Ep. 10) And start the long road to recovery.
Barbed-Phoenix: *keels over*
Barbed-Phoenix: *gets back up* When it comes to unlocking the secrets of maximum approval… there is no sacrifice too great.
Either way, I hope this analysis satisfies, dear Anon. Though it’s still far from a concrete path to maxing out your Love-o-meters.
Because according to one anthropologist… the only ideal partner there is, is someone willing to work at a relationship. ;)
If you enjoyed this analysis (and even if you didn’t), drop me a message in my Ask Box. I’m always happy to hear from other players. Take that any way you like. ;)

The Sanctity of the Individual
1978. A family in crisis. Critically ill Robert McFall is suing his cousin, David Shimp, for refusing to donate life-saving bone marrow. The donation operation has a good safety record yet Shimp refuses to take the risk. Mounting a strong defense in court he rebuts his cousin’s move and the judge rules in his favor. McFall dies shortly after (“Cousin Wouldn’t Donate” 11). Legal history is made.
McFall’s case was built on an attempt to wrestle out a favorable answer to the following question: “in order to save the life of one of its members by the only means available, may society infringe upon another’s absolute right to his bodily security?" (McFall v. Shimp). The judge handling the case, John Flaherty noted in his ruling that, while Shimp’s refusal to cooperate was “morally indefensible”, he nevertheless could not rule in McFall’s favor:
For our law to compel (the) defendant to submit to an intrusion of his body would change every concept and principle upon which our society is founded. To do so would defeat the sanctity of the individual, and would impose a rule which would know no limits, and one could not imagine where the line would be drawn.
The sanctity of the individual thus takes precedence over any competing notion of saving those in peril at the expense of the healthy. This continues to be the guiding principle underlying the organ donation system in the United States until today and extends to both the living and the dead. This is achieved by having an “opt-in” system in which the donor (or his family in case he is incapacitated) must express his prior consent for donation explicitly. Interestingly, many people believe that this system is overly cautious and may not be serving society optimally. The argument being that the “opt-in” condition is reducing the number of potential donors (whether out of neglect to opt in or a purposeful refusal to participate). In a quick informal survey I ran on the Columbia School of General Studies student group on Facebook, only 30% of respondents favored the opt-in system. I posed the same question again in my writing class and nobody voted for opting-in. However, if we consider the underlying dynamics more deeply and wade carefully through the consequences, we will find that the opt-in system is actually the best approach out there. It is safer, prevents the development of an overzealous organ procurement system, precludes the appearance of odd societal perversions, treats citizens as alert responsible individuals who can willfully make virtuous choices, and is the option most compatible with democratic and civic ideals.
Tumblr media
First, some statistics: The number of people awaiting organ donations in the United States is about 113,000 (“Transplant Trends”). In 2018, only 36,500 transplant operations were carried out. These included kidney (21,000), liver (8,250), heart (3,400), lung, pancreas and intestine transplants. Most of these organs were harvested from deceased donors (10,700) while living donors – who can only safely part with a kidney each and a segment of their liver – numbered only 6,900. The waiting period before receiving a donated organ can run up to three years. Clearly, the shortage is very problematic considering the terrible suffering of patients on the waiting list who make do with artificial support (dialysis machines for example) until relief arrives. In light of these dire statistics, might the other mooted options, namely having an organ draft or an opt-out system, speed things up and at least cut down if not end the shortage?
In a 1988 paper titled “The Case for a Post-Mortem Organ Draft and a Proposed Model Organ Draft Act”, Theodore Silver, currently Associate Professor of Law at Touro College in Long Island New York, made the case for the draft system. He writes “Every year in our nation 200,000 useful organs are consigned to the maggots for ready conversion to swill. The law indulges us in this practice while thousands anguish for want of buried parts” (681). In the face of this waste, Silver proposes an organ draft act that would ban the burial of organs as long as they are needed for the treatment of waiting patients (722). The act would “…authorize physicians and hospital personnel to remove from any cadaver such organs as would be useful to a living patient registered with a central registry. Organs would be evaluated and removed without consent of either the decedent or her survivors” (695). In support of his proposal, he argues that everybody stands to benefit as any citizen could one day find themselves on a waiting list, and states that a clear cut draft avoids the ambiguities and moral vagueness of the opt-out system.
Let us backtrack then and examine the opt-out system – apparently the most popular option among laymen as indicated by the Facebook poll and the in-class survey. The guiding principle here is that everyone is presumed to have given their consent as long as they have not expressly opted out. This is clearly a more conservative approach than the organ draft because there is a moment in which the physician must pause to check whether the case in front of him is still a donor or whether consent has been withdrawn. It is also more practical than the opt-in system as it avoids awkward confrontations between physicians on the one hand and distressed patients or relatives on the other as they try to pop the donation question at the most inopportune of times (‘Excuse me but can we have your permission to salvage your dying son’s organs?’). However, the system is problematic in that it takes a short cut around citizens’ right to make a conscious and well-informed decision. It does not take the time to ensure that people have clearly understood their options, weighed the risks, and made a well studied choice. As Silver puts it:
…presumed consent represents conscription in disguise. It gives citizens the impression that they have the right to refuse donation, when in fact many would not. Because many families might be entirely unaware that organs will be removed unless they object, organs will be removed without their consent or prior knowledge. Surviving relatives might then learn of the removal after the fact or not at all. In either event they have no opportunity to protest the removal, and, in a very meaningful sense, the organs are taken with no account for their wishes (706).
A wolf in sheep’s clothing is still a wolf! At least an organ draft system makes no attempt at hiding behind a vague and misleading aura of civility.
A question presents itself at this point. What exactly are we afraid of? What is the risk that we have alluded to in the previous paragraph? What is the nature of the wolf that we are seeking to tame? Why would some people prefer to opt out at all? So what if people’s right to determine what happens to their bodies posthumously is denied? Perhaps no other case better illustrates the hidden problem tugging at the back of our minds than that of Ruben Navarro.
A disabled man, Navarro 25 was on life support in a dedicated facility as he suffered from a debilitating neurological condition (McKinley). He suddenly went into cardiac arrest, was revived, and transferred to a local hospital sustaining brain-damage as his head was starved of oxygen. Navarro now became a prime organ donor candidate. A doctor at the hospital phoned his mother and obtained her consent for donation. As he neared death, a transplant team was called in to save his organs. When the time came, Navarro was wheeled to the operating room (where the transplant team were waiting), taken off the ventilator, and handed over to the transplant surgeon who now assumed control. He administered comforting sedatives to ease Navarro’s transition as he waited for him to die. Though unconscious, Navarro had other ideas and refused to go without a fight. Hour after hour passed as Navarro hung on. Frustrated, the transplant surgeon administered Betadine (a toxic substance) to hasten his demise! Still Navarro refused to cooperate and struggled for eight whole hours in total before finally letting out his final breath. Ironically, his organs were by then deteriorated beyond use.
This is the wolf we are trying to keep under control. An overzealous system that goes after people’s organs to fulfill annual quotas and in the process loses sight of one of medicine’s main goals: to do no harm. While having an opt-in system did not preclude Navarro’s case from happening, it does ensure that the whole mentality of transplant practitioners is geared in favor of caution and prudence making such horrific lapses an extremely rare and unlikely occurrence. Because of the opt-in feature, the entire organ donation ecosystem is given a conservative footing that ensures that donors’ wellbeing is not trampled upon, their individual wishes respected, and that they are afforded the best medical care. All effort is made to save their lives rather than scavenge their organs. It is not unreasonable to believe that under a more aggressive set up such as the organ draft or the opt-out system abuses would be more frequent, horror stories even more deeply horrifying, and predatory organ scavenging practices would be closer to the norm!
One such predatory idea that could have come to pass had the moderating ethos of the opt-in system not been present was an initiative proposed in 2008 in New York to introduce Rapid Organ Recovery Ambulances (RORAs) (Whetstine 114). Special ambulances crewed with transplant paramedics would be quickly dispatched to accident scenes. Once victims were pronounced dead by regular paramedics and a “no touch interim of two to five minutes elapses”, the RORA crew would take over and start working on the body to prolong its organs’ viability while the deceased’s family’s consent was being sought. Fortunately the idea was not successful and seems to have vanished away. Had an opt-out system been in place though, RORAs and their transplant crews could well have become a reality with the added responsibility of beginning in-situ organ removal at the accident site (‘consent is presumed, let’s go, disembowel the victim!’). It is very easy to see the public’s trust in all ambulances eroding away very quickly under such a scenario. The respect given them would have been turned into terror. Once viewed as noble agents of life they would now be seen as vultures of doom.
However let us de-sensationalize the discussion and, for the sake of argument, assume that policy makers and administrators are able to enact strict guidelines and enforce tough measures that rule out any practitioner transgressions and accidents under an organ draft or opt-out system. Having inoculated these options against any safety concerns, are they then acceptable alternatives to the current situation? Would the 70% of Facebook pollees who voted against the opt-in system be making the ‘correct’ choice? To answer this question we need to consider what kind of society we want to live in.
Paternalism, is defined by the dictionary as “the system, principle, or practice of managing or governing individuals, businesses, nations, etc., in the manner of a father dealing benevolently and often intrusively with his children” (Dictionary.com). Should we, in an attempt at a quick fix, outsource the organ donation decision to a paternalistic central authority (whether explicitly through an organ draft or implicitly through an opt-out system)? Should we as individuals give up our prerogative of making conscious and willful decisions to help others? Can we not be mindful of fellow humans in need? Can we not as adults be counted upon to make the right choices? Should we allow ourselves to be patronized by governments and treated as children? Commenting on a pro opt-out article published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) one reader pointed out that…
given the shortage of organs in the UK, the preoccupation with the preservation of patient autonomy may seem dogmatic and possibly eccentric, but this inconvenient concept underpins the ethics behind modern medical practice. The State brushes autonomy and free will aside at its peril. If the Government goes ahead with presumed consent for organ donation, it will irrevocably alter the relationship between the State and its citizens (Shin).
To sidestep citizens’ autonomy with a stealthy (or even well advertised) opt-out system puts society on a slippery slope that slowly brings it closer to totalitarian modes of thought. A society in which the individual becomes subservient to a central authority’s view of what is best. It also opens the door to all sorts of administrative shortcuts that make life easier for those in power. Rather than make the effort to convince the public on all sorts of issues with well designed campaigns based on facts and information, rulers would devise all sorts of opt-out mechanisms to streamline their authority and unshackle it from any public oversight whenever possible.
In the context of organ transplants, the slippery slope begins with opt-out and presumed consent systems, moves on to take advantage of the poor and uneducated with legalized organ trading and commodification, starts questioning inmates’ rights to bodily sanctity, and eventually reaches the ‘logical’ conclusion that some people are less worthy of their organs than others. Political opponents in particular become highly desirable targets for organ harvesting. This is not idle fantasizing or scaremongering. Examples of societies around the world that have crossed the red lines abound. Iran has legalized organ trading under the guise of helping the destitute raise the funds they need for their survival. Rather than shoulder its responsibilities and build up its social security mechanisms and safety nets to the level needed by its citizens, the government found a way around its incompetence by allowing the poor to sell their organs for cash. The result is short term financial relief followed quickly by a fall into a vicious circle of disability, lowered earning power, and debt (Bengali). In China, evidence is mounting that the persecuted spiritual group, the Falun Gong, were mined for years for their organs (Rogers).
Judge Flaherty’s ruling in 1978 was spot on. While he may not have had in mind the legalization of organ trading or the mining of the bodies of prisoners of conscience, his wording (“To do so… would impose a rule which would know no limits, and one could not imagine where the line would be drawn”) pointed to an alert instinct. An instinct that had internalized the dangers posed by the misguided notion of promoting the wider good by violating the bodily sanctity of a person. A seemingly benevolent opt-out system commits such a violation on a massive population-wide scale. It changes the default condition by flicking the basic ‘bodily-autonomy-and-integrity-switch’ from ‘on’ to ‘off’. All of a sudden weird and perverse results start springing up everywhere. Objecting citizens “…are now obliged to assert their self ownership to the state” (Kennedy). What was once a virtuous act of altruism now becomes a form of tacit state oppression (Philips). Hospitals become ranked according to how well they process dead patients into transplantable organs. Opting-outers become a thing, get frowned upon, and stigmatized. A perverse dystopian situation is summoned out of nowhere.
The only way to promote free and confident societies and work towards their sustainable uplifting and moral advancement is by holding the rights of their individuals sacred. A good area on which to focus would be to protect the opt-in organ donation system while continuing to work on convincing people to willingly and freely sign on. Thomas Jefferson once said “the price of liberty is eternal vigilance”. People should always remain vigilant and not Facebook-poll their rights away no matter how convenient or inconsequential such a step may seem.
The good news is that efforts to grow the number of donors have paid off and there are now 145 million people in the US who have opted in and registered to donate their organs (Organdonor.gov). That is almost 70% of the adult population (Infoplease.com). An impressive statistic that shows a high level of public awareness and altruism and negates any need to tamper with the status quo.

Guidelines for Evil Empresses
(From The Evil Empress Guide)
Beauty is fleeting, power is vulnerable. I will not risk the latter for the former.
I will use my magic mirror for spying on my enemies rather than for vain attempts at preserving my position as fairest in the land.
I will not fret over the comparative beauty of the Hero's True Love or any Beautiful Yet Innocent kinfolk. They may be attractive enough for peasant wenches/quivering maidens; but I am The Evil Empress, and there is no comparison.
I will not bed the Hunky Hero before my plan is executed, unless having him believe I am carrying his child gives me a decisive advantage.
While seduction has its place in my vast arsenal, I realize that "evil" and "skanky" are not mutually inclusive. Royal Dressmakers unable to realize this fact will be flayed alive in the presence of their replacements.
I will wear flats, or better yet, running shoes when executing crucial plans.
My slinky sorceress' robe will have a chain mail foundation garment, at minimum.
I will not be put off by the Hero's rebuffs of my sensual advances. If he doesn't succumb to me, I will not fly into a jealous rage. Instead, I'll shrug my shoulders, send him on his way, and have him picked off as he exits the fortress.
Where winks, suggestive remarks, and body language won't get me what I want, a well aimed semi-automatic will.
Sex is certainly a weapon at my disposal, but then so is a blaster. If it is not clear which weapon I should be using, I will opt for the blaster.
I, and my elite guards, will never assume that we have managed to confiscate all weapons or escape aids from the captured Hero. "Interrogations" in my private chambers will only be conducted if the Hero is completely nude. This will, in fact, satisfy a number of objectives at once.
I will promote chivalry and urge my minions to exhibit proper behavior at all times when it is not counterproductive to my schemes. This increases the chance of running up against only chivalric Heroes, as well as increasing the surprise factor when I ditch the pretenses and get really vicious.
I will not seize power for my beloved son or husband or other close individual, especially since they may not, in the end, be grateful that I was so ruthless and treacherous on their behalf. I will seize power for myself and grant my loved ones small fiefdoms they can call their own, if they want.
If the Hero is an old lover of mine (and they almost invariably are), I will remember just why he is a former lover, and keep it in mind as I destroy him.
If I know the Hero is an old lover of mine and he is not aware of this fact, I will keep it to myself. I will be more able to exploit his weaknesses and my other intimate knowledge about him if I do not allow my identity to be revealed.
If the Hero says he is willing to betray his cause and accept my offer of ruling the world at my side, he will only be believed once that betrayal results in his cause's total destruction, at which point his demonstration of total lack of principle should lead to his immediate execution.
I will not punish or kill lovers who fail to satisfy me. Such a policy would cause performance anxiety in future lovers, defeating the purpose. I will instead reward exceptional effort, and lavishly reward exceptional proficiency.
My poison-fanged or -clawed beast minions will not be spiders, snakes and ravens, but kittens, goldfish, and canaries.
I will wear breakaway clothing whenever risking capture. It will facilitate escape if I am grabbed, and it will distract the captor (but not me) for those crucial seconds it will take me to either escape or steal his own weapon.
I will wear form-fitting clothes rather than flowing gowns: they're just as, if not more, flattering and are less likely to snag on something or catch fire at the moment of triumph or escape.
If I require my Hag or Crone to poison someone, I will require the poison be quick and deadly rather than a mere sleep aid.
My Amazon Hordes will either be dyed-in-the-wool lesbians or have a nice pool of suitable comely men of their liking at home.
My Amazon Hordes will wear full body armor, rather than three small triangles of chain mail, which are reserved for dress occasions.
The infantry of my Amazon Hordes will use advanced tactics such as the Phalanx and will employ sophisticated weapons such as the 10' pike when closing with the enemy, but only after the longbow-women have emptied their quivers from 200 yards away.
I will re-evaluate any job that requires manipulating a man in my thrall. Chances are one of my Amazons could do the job with less risk.
Male Sidekicks are almost always corruptible with a wink and a nod or charmable by a simple spell or potion, at least until the crucial encounter with the Hero, at which time they should be safely entombed somewhere far from the action.
The effort of turning female or gay sidekicks generally makes killing them the least bothersome tactic.
If I married into the title of Evil Empress, I will let my Overlord take the flak for the Empire's evil actions and ingratiate myself to the people with my kindness.
If I married into the title of Evil Empress under duress then my very first order of business must be the disposal of the Evil Overlord, since he must already know he can't possibly trust me as far as he can throw me.
If I married into the title of Evil Empress under duress then using the Hero to free me of the Overlord does not obligate me to abdicate my throne.
If I am competing with other Overlords, Empresses and High Priests for ultimate domination, I will assume they have access to this and other lists and the brains to listen to them.
I will not try to turn a son (even mine) against his father, no matter how estranged to two are. Blood relatives can be annoyingly sentimental.
I will neither repress my Beautiful but Wicked Daughter nor smother my Handsome but Evil Son. It's hard enough raising a ruling family these days without extra dysfunctional baggage. No one wants disgruntled offspring suddenly "seeing the light" and turning Good simply because mother dearest gave them an unhappy childhood.
Unless immortality comes with Absolute Power, I'd better be grooming my Evil Offspring to take the reigns someday. It's better to carefully feed their growing lust for power by gradually increasing Imperial responsibilities than having them plot my untimely demise.
If I am unfortunate enough to have a Beautiful but Innocent Daughter, as opposed to a Beautiful but Wicked Daughter, I will unconditionally love and nurture her nonetheless, and be as supportive as possible of any budding romantic relationship with potential young Heroes. This will a) delay Heroic action while I study his strengths and weaknesses, b) cause emotional conflicts within the Hero that will encourage fatal hesitations or mistakes, c) provide another chance for my daughter to see things my way before I'm forced to eliminate her.
I will not mistreat, abuse, or plot elaborately to kill my Beautiful Yet Innocent Stepdaughter (she's destined for something, count on it). Instead I will treat her with all the kindness and love possible while slowly reshaping her in my image.
However insatiable my appetites are, it is virtually guaranteed that at least one of my millions of subjects is both far more gifted at satisfying them and far more loyal to me than the Hero who seeks my destruction, no matter his reputation with the ladies.
My personal servants will be professional bodyguards and assassins, but will dress and behave as eunuchs and maidservants. Even if I dismiss my regular guards for a "private audience" with the Hero, these personal servants (just so much furniture after all, right?) will remain in my chambers.
Any one bodyguard who cannot maintain concentration and discipline in my boudoir will be eliminated immediately by the others.
I will learn the various arts of self defense and not rely solely on muscular minions to protect me.
The appearance of weakness can be as useful as the appearance of strength. I will exploit the double standard for all its worth.
If I must enlist the powers of the nether-worlds I will first bone up on contract law. My own soul, mind, and/or (especially) body will never be negotiable.
If I get the bright idea to seduce a powerful yet malevolent being into becoming an ally, the actual seduction can be handled by my body double. Exotic anatomies are not to become a factor.
My Radiant Amulet of Power will not be worn around my neck on a thin gold chain, or on a ring that is two sizes too big for my finger. If a line of sight is required, then a good strong locking watchband will do. If the amulet need not be exposed, being Empress I have a variety of far more secure hiding places at my immediate disposal - and to hell with the glow.
Men already enthralled by my Feminine Wiles will just as easily take my orders when radioed from my fortress as in person on the front lines.
I will keep my hair short and my fingernails trimmed. Short hair provides no convienent handle for the Hero, Sidekick or Backstabbing Evil Ally. Trimmed fingernails enable me to press The Button myself, rather than rely on minions with blunt nails or try to find a stick.
I will locate any phobias or nervous habits I may posses and take therapy until I can overcome them; that way, I can't be chased from the scene of my Ultimate Triumph because someone dropped a snake from the air vent.
If the seeds of discontent look ready to bloom into open rebellion, I will hire a top PR firm to create the public image that I am 1) only a figurehead and that all power really resides in the Prime Minister; 2) misunderstood; or 3) only a woman who's getting bad advice from her Council. Choices 1) and 3) give me the option to keep my head if my side is defeated by the Hero -- and leave the possibility of a sequel.
The internet is my friend. I can inspire loyalty with www.EvilEmpress'.budoir.live.com (be it with a body double or not as the mood strikes me) and obedience with www.EvilEmpres'.pit-of-dispair.live.com.
If there is any conceivable thing the sight of which can melt me into mawkish sentimentality, I will wear sunglasses designed to make it look like a Chia Pet.
If the Hero has an evil twin, the twin will probably make a far more suitable Love-Happy Stooge. Keeping this in mind, I will beware advisers who might have a Non-Evil twin.
Magic Girls, no matter how frilly their dresses, high their screams, or incompetent their sidekicks, will be treated as the credible and dire threats they are, and I will direct as many, if not more resources to their destruction as I would for a more classical Hero.
If I take an Orphan as my own to corrupt I will be sure that no genetic relative exists to turn him or her against me.
Investigate the lineage of all prospective allies. Allies lacking any trace of grandparents, or whose genetic roots intersect with yours, or whose genetic roots intersect any known or suspected dieties should be kept at arm's length (but within blaster range).
Allies need never see my command center or budoir. Almost any business can be taken care of in a rented conference room.
I will not expose myself needlessly to potential personal security risks, such as by shopping, or allowing my Beautiful but Innocent Daughter to shop at the local Star Galleria Mall.¬Ý As Empress of all I Survey, the merchants will come to me with their wares - after being throughly vetted by my Chief of Palace Security (to prevent assassination attempts), and then by my household steward (to avoid fashion disasters and poor quality goods) before being brought to my attention for purchase.
I will not transform the rival/good sorceress and exile her to the back of beyond. If she can't keep me from transforming her, she can't keep me from killing her.
No lingering curses or sleeping-forever potions for my rivals; Instant Death is the least I can do.
If I can turn the Good Prince into a frog, I must also be able to turn him into a centipede. The latter form is far better as any princess in her right mind is unlikely to kiss a centipede. Also, centipedes are more easily squashed under my bootheel.

Here’s the Difference Between Federal and Private Student Loan Consolidation
Most college graduates leave school with a number of different student loans, racked up throughout their years of study. Each of these loans can come with different terms, payments, servicers and statements. The sheer amount of numbers and other information can be difficult to track.
If you feel overwhelmed with managing your student loan debt, don’t panic — you do have options. One way to make student loans easier to deal with is through federal and private student loan consolidation.
When you consolidate your debt, you combine all those loans into one. You do this by taking out a new loan for the amount of the balances of the existing loans, use the newly borrowed money to repay all the older debt, and then focus on repaying your one new loan.
This simplifies your financial situation and makes your debts easier to keep track of. Other benefits of consolidation could include securing more favorable interest rates (if you also refinance) and lower monthly payments (by extending your repayment term).
Federal and private student loan consolidation: What you need to know
Before you choose to consolidate your loans, examine your situation carefully to determine if this is the best course of action. This isn’t a solution that works well for everyone.
Consolidation doesn’t always result in a lower interest rate — even if you refinance — and lower monthly payments usually mean paying the loan over a longer period of time and spending more on interest.
You also need to know that the process is different for federal student loans and private student loans, especially if you’re trying to manage both kinds of loans. Private lenders may be able to consolidate both private and federal loans, but you cannot roll private loans into a new federal Direct Consolidation Loan.
And just because you can use refinancing to consolidate private student loans together with your federal loans doesn’t mean it’s a good idea either. Doing so eliminates any benefits or eligibility for federal repayment plans or loan forgiveness that you could have received from a federal program.
If you think you’ll need an income-driven repayment plan or want to pursue federal forgiveness options, it’s best not to mix federal and private loans.
Should I consolidate my federal student loans?
When you choose to consolidate your federal student loans, the government will combine all your separate debts into a single new loan, known as a Direct Consolidation Loan. You can apply once you graduate, otherwise leave school or become enrolled less than half-time; these events will trigger the start of your repayment.
Most federal student loans are eligible for consolidation, including subsidized and unsubsidized Direct loans, subsidized and unsubsidized federal Stafford loans, Direct PLUS loans and others. Although the Perkins loan program came to an end in September 2017, old Perkins loans are still eligible for consolidation, as well.
If you have a PLUS loan in the name of a parent, that loan cannot be transferred to the student during consolidation. Also, you can’t consolidate a defaulted loan until you make a repayment agreement with the loan’s servicer or agree to repay the new consolidated loan with one of the government’s eligible repayment plans.
Pros of consolidating federal student loans Direct Consolidation loans offer one single payment and potentially lower monthly payments. Consolidating federal loans is free via the federal government. Beware of companies which offer to help you consolidate federal student loans for a fee. No credit check is required to consolidate federal student loans, and you can apply online.
On the other hand, if you’re only interested in simplifying your situation, consider finding other ways of tracking your debt and managing repayment. That’s because Direct Consolidation Loans have drawbacks, too.
Cons of consolidating federal student loans A lower monthly payment means paying the loan over a longer period of time, which will cost you more money due to interest charges. When you consolidate your federal student loans, you lose the ability to strategically target your highest interest and/or highest balance loans using a method such as the debt avalanche or debt snowball. Federal consolidation doesn’t result in a better interest rate. Rather, the new rate is a weighted average of all the interest rates on your student loans, rounded up to the nearest one-eighth of a percentage point. Some federal consolidation loans may come with higher interest rates than private loans. For example, the average interest rate for Direct unsubsidized loans for graduate or professional students is 6.6%, while some student loan refinancing lenders offer rates below 3% if you qualify. That difference can really add up over time — you can check our refinancing calculator to see how much.
Be sure to explore all your options and weigh which benefits — those from Direct Consolidation loans or those from other strategies, such as refinancing — will help you the most.
Should I consolidate my private student loans?
While private student debt isn’t eligible for federal loan consolidation, you can still consolidate your private loans by refinancing with a private lender. Requirements and eligibility will vary from one financial institution to another.
Some private lenders may require you borrow a minimum amount. Some might use different criteria to evaluate your creditworthiness than others. It’s best to reach out to individual lenders to ask for their specific rules around eligibility. You can compare the results to determine what might be a good fit for you.
Some of the benefits and drawbacks of consolidating your private student loans are similar to those for consolidating federal loans:
Pros of consolidating private student loans You may benefit by creating an easier-to-manage financial situation, getting better terms or securing lower monthly payments. One big benefit of consolidating private student loans through refinancing is potentially securing a much lower interest rate. Your rate will be based on your creditworthiness or that of a cosigner. If your credit score has significantly improved from the time you took out your loans, or you have built a solid income and employment history, you’re more likely to get a low rate that could make refinancing a smart financial move. Cons of consolidating private student loans When considering consolidation, keep in mind whether you’re also extending the repayment term. Again, with more payments comes more interest. While there’s no cost to originate a federal Direct Consolidation Loan, some private lenders will charge an origination fee. A credit check is required to consolidate private student loans via refinancing, which may be a downside, depending on your credit history.
Again, it’s important to evaluate all your options before making a decision.
Consolidation vs. refinancing
As you probably noticed, consolidating private student loans is generally done by refinancing. However, you don’t necessarily have to consolidate in order to refinance. You can cherry-pick just the loans that would save you money by refinancing, while leaving other debt (perhaps including your federal loans) as they are.
This might make more sense if you have fewer loans and just one has a very high interest rate. You can refinance to a lower rate and maintain the original benefits and rates on all your other loans.
Remember that the federal government will not refinance your loans — they only offer Direct Consolidation loans. Private lenders will refinance both federal and private student loans.
If you want to compare the immediate benefits of Direct Loan consolidation vs. private consolidation and refinancing for your situation, check out the calculator below:

Consolidating your federal student loans through the Direct Loan Consolidation program would set your new interest rate at —, slightly higher than your current rate of —. If you chose to remain on the standard repayment plan, you would pay — and would finish paying off your loans in —. If you refinanced your student loans, with a — and 15 year term, you would pay — and pay off your loans by —.Refinancing is the only way to lower your interest rate but you may lose some of the safeguards associated with having federal loans, so make sure you are fully educated on the decision by reading our recommended resources below:Consolidation vs. Refinancing Student Loans: Which Is Right for You?6 Best Banks To Refinance Your Student LoansShould You Refinance Your Federal Student Loans?

Again, just like with consolidation, you may not want to refinance any federal loans because you’ll lose your eligibility for government-backed repayment plans. But if you don’t plan to use those programs and can financially benefit by refinancing to a lower interest rate, this may be a viable option for you.
Bottom line on federal and private student loan consolidation
While consolidating student loans may seem like an attractive option, there are many factors to consider in determining if it’s the right move for you. Make sure you ask the right questions and weigh all the pros and cons before deciding, so you can pay your student loans off as quickly and economically as possible.

Interest rates on variable rate loans are capped at either 8.95% or 9.95% depending on term of loan. See APR examples and terms. Lowest variable rate of 2.500% APR assumes current 1 month LIBOR rate of 2.50% plus 0.00% margin minus 0.25% ACH discount. Not all borrowers receive the lowest rate. If approved for a loan, the fixed or variable interest rate offered will depend on your creditworthiness, and the term of the loan and other factors, and will be within the ranges of rates listed above. For the SoFi variable rate loan, the 1-month LIBOR index will adjust monthly and the loan payment will be re-amortized and may change monthly. APRs for variable rate loans may increase after origination if the LIBOR index increases. See eligibility details. The SoFi 0.25% AutoPay interest rate reduction requires you to agree to make monthly principal and interest payments by an automatic monthly deduction from a savings or checking account. The benefit will discontinue and be lost for periods in which you do not pay by automatic deduction from a savings or checking account. *To check the rates and terms you qualify for, SoFi conducts a soft credit inquiry. Unlike hard credit inquiries, soft credit inquiries (or soft credit pulls) do not impact your credit score. Soft credit inquiries allow SoFi to show you what rates and terms SoFi can offer you up front. After seeing your rates, if you choose a product and continue your application, we will request your full credit report from one or more consumer reporting agencies, which is considered a hard credit inquiry. Hard credit inquiries (or hard credit pulls) are required for SoFi to be able to issue you a loan. In addition to requiring your explicit permission, these credit pulls may impact your credit score.

However, if the borrower chooses to make monthly payments automatically by electronic funds transfer (EFT) from a bank account, the fixed rate will decrease by 0.25%, and will increase back up to the regular fixed interest rate described in the preceding paragraph if the borrower stops making (or we stop accepting) monthly payments automatically by EFT from the designated borrower’s bank account.
VARIABLE APR Variable rate options consist of a range from 2.75% per year to 6.30% per year for a 5-year term, 4.00% per year to 6.35% per year for a 7-year term, 4.25% per year to 6.40% per year for a 10-year term, 4.50% per year to 6.65% per year for a 15-year term, or 4.75% per year to 6.90% per year for a 20-year term, with no origination fees. Federal Loan vs. Private Loan Benefits: Some federal student loans include unique benefits that the borrower may not receive with a private student loan, some of which we do not offer with the Education Refinance Loan. Borrowers should carefully review their current benefits, especially if they work in public service, are in the military, are currently on or considering income based repayment options or are concerned about a steady source of future income and would want to lower their payments at some time in the future. For more information about federal student loan benefits and federal loan consolidation, visit http://studentaid.ed.gov/. We also have several resources available to help the borrower make a decision at http://www.citizensbank.com/EdRefinance, including Should I Refinance My Student Loans? and our FAQs. Should I Refinance My Student Loans? includes a comparison of federal and private student loan benefits that we encourage the borrower to review. Co-signer Release: Borrowers may apply for co-signer release after making 36 consecutive on-time payments of principal and interest. For the purpose of the application for co-signer release, on-time payments are defined as payments received within 15 days of the due date. Interest only payments do not qualify. The borrower must meet certain credit and eligibility guidelines when applying for the co-signer release. Borrowers must complete an application for release and provide income verification documents as part of the review. Borrowers who use deferment or forbearance will need to make 36 consecutive on-time payments after reentering repayment to qualify for release. The borrower applying for co-signer release must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. If an application for co-signer release is denied, the borrower may not reapply for co-signer release until at least one year from the date the application for co-signer release was received. Terms and conditions apply. Borrowers whose loans were funded prior to reaching the age of majority may not be eligible for co-signer release. What will your children learn in preschool?
1. What's the difference between childcare and preschool?
Childcare centers are generally an option for working parents who need their children to be taken care of during the day; centers accept babies as well as toddlers and are full-time, full-year programs. Preschool refers to an early-childhood educational class for 3- and 4-year-olds. Many offer a part-time schedule (for example, a few hours a day, two to five times a week) as well as full-day care, but only from September to May. Yet the terms are often used interchangeably. A childcare center with experienced, well-trained teachers and stimulating activities offers kids similar advantages to a preschool. "In fact, many preschools are part of childcare programs," says Linda Smith, executive director of the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies. (To learn more about high-quality childcare -- as well as preschool programs -- log on to naccrra.org and download a free copy of Is This the Right Place for My Child?)
• naccrra.org
2. How important is preschool?
"There's increasing evidence that children gain a lot from going to preschool," says Parents advisor Kathleen McCartney, PhD, dean of Harvard Graduate School of Education, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. "At preschool, they become exposed to numbers, letters, and shapes. And, more important, they learn how to socialize -- get along with other children, share, contribute to circle time."
Statistics show that a majority of kids attend at least one year of preschool: According to the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER), more than two-thirds of 4-year-olds and more than 40 percent of 3-year-olds were enrolled in a preschool in 2005. "Children who attend high-quality preschool enter kindergarten with better pre-reading skills, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills than those who do not," says NIEER director W. Steven Barnett, PhD.
"Every child should have some sort of group experience before he starts kindergarten," says Amy Flynn, director of New York City's Bank Street Family Center. Music and gymnastics classes are great, but what preschools do that less formal classes don't is teach kids how to be students. Your child will learn how to raise her hand, take turns, and share the teacher's attention. What's more, she'll learn how to separate from Mommy, who often stays in a music or gym class. All of this makes for an easier transition to kindergarten. "Kindergarten teachers will tell you that the students who are ready to learn are those who come into school with good social and behavior-management skills," Smith says.

In fact, educators have so recognized the importance of giving kids some form of quality early education that about 40 states now offer state-funded pre-K programs.
3. What will my child learn?
In addition to strengthening socialization skills -- how to compromise, be respectful of others, and problem-solve -- preschool provides a place where your child can gain a sense of self, explore, play with her peers, and build confidence. "Kids in preschool discover that they are capable and can do things for themselves -- from small tasks like pouring their own juice and helping set snack tables to tackling bigger issues like making decisions about how to spend their free time," says Angela Capone, PhD, senior program manager at Southwest Human Development's Arizona Institute for Childhood Development, in Phoenix. "Plus, 4- and 5-year-olds have begun asking some wonderful questions about the world around them -- what happens to the water after the rain? Do birds play? Quality preschools help children find answers through exploration, experimentation, and conversation."
4. But what about learning his ABCs?
"Young children can certainly learn letters and numbers, but to sit kids down and 'teach' them is the wrong way to do it," says Smith. "They learn best through doing the kinds of activities they find interesting -- storytime, talking to their teachers about stars, playing with blocks." To help kids learn language and strengthen pre-reading skills, for instance, teachers might play rhyming games and let kids tell stories. Keep in mind that for small children, school is all about having fun and acquiring social skills -- not achieving academic milestones. "Kids need to be imaginative and to socialize -- that's what fosters creative, well-rounded people. It's not whether they can read by age 4 or multiply by 5," says Flynn. An ideal curriculum? Parading around in dress-up clothes, building forts, and being read to.

Choosing the Right Preschool
5. How old should my child be when she starts?
Most preschools serve 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds, and many kids begin at age 4. (Some preschools will start accepting children at around 2 1/2, but that doesn't mean your child will be ready when he reaches that age.) You can choose from a part-time schedule or a full-time one. Your choice will depend on your family's situation -- working moms might prefer five days a week -- and on your child's temperament. Parents typically start investigating options about a year before they want their children to attend. But if you live in a big city, where competition for spots can be fierce, you'll want to start applying even earlier and to more than one place.
6. How do I choose the right preschool?
Research, research, research. First, decide on location (close to work or home?) and hours (half-day, two or three days a week, full-time?). There are programs at private schools, daycare centers, religious institutions (like synagogues and churches), state-funded schools, and cooperatives run by parents. Start by asking for recommendations from other moms. Next, check whether the schools are state-licensed, which ensures the facility meets safety requirements and has adequate staffing (visit naccrra.org). Many states exempt religious-based preschools from all or some requirements -- although many meet these standards anyway.
The gold standard of approval is accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. NAEYC carefully evaluates schools and childcare centers based on curriculum, teacher qualifications, class size, and health and safety standards; only about 8 percent of U.S. preschools are currently accredited. (Search for NAEYC-accredited preschools near you at rightchoiceforkids.org.) In addition, many preschools now have Web sites that you should visit.
Call each school you're considering and ask about its fees, admission policy, and curriculum. Once you've narrowed down your choices, schedule visits. Most preschools run open houses during the winter. Also, meet with the director and spend time in a classroom to observe the teachers. Visit each school with your child and see how she responds to the classroom, the teachers, and the activities.
• naccrra.org • rightchoiceforkids.org
7. What should I look for during a visit?
Check out the basics: Is the facility clean and safe? Keep your eye out for smoke detectors and first-aid kits. Is there a well-kept outdoor play area? Are there plenty of art materials, age-appropriate toys, and books? Are they in good condition? Is the atmosphere friendly and fun? Student work should be displayed in the hallways and around the classroom, hung at kid-level. "I tell parents to pay special attention to the artwork on the walls," says Dr. Barnett. "Would you be able to pick out your child's artwork? If all the pictures look the same, then your child will learn to make a bunny just like everyone else's. That's not really the goal."
The classroom should have a variety of activity areas -- a reading place, an art station with materials on shelves that kids can reach, a block corner, a puzzle area, and a place for naps. Children should not all be doing the same thing at the same time; they should be playing with toys or other kids but still well supervised.
Finally, do you feel comfortable? "You want to be confident that once you drop off your child, he'll be happy and well taken care of," says Mark Ginsberg, PhD, NAEYC executive director.
Making the Right Decision
8. What makes a good teacher?
Find out about the teachers' training and credentials. Ideally, head teachers should have a minimum of an associate's degree and formal training in early-childhood education. "Research shows that teachers with college degrees and specialized early-childhood training have more positive interactions with children, provide richer language experiences, and are less detached," says Dr. Barnett. Also, consider teacher-child ratios. According to NAEYC standards, there should be at least one teacher for every eight to ten 4- and 5-year-olds, and one adult for every six 2- and 3-year-olds. Low child-teacher ratios are very important, since they allow teachers to give ample attention to everyone, notes Dr. McCartney. Talk to the teachers about how they work with the kids. "Look for teachers who recognize the particular needs of different children, and who know how to adapt a curriculum for those who are ahead as well as for those who need additional help," she says.
Visit a class while it's going on. A good teacher talks with children, asking a lot of questions and patiently answering theirs. She makes kids feel welcome and fosters their self-confidence. Talk with the teacher about a typical day, and ways in which she'll keep you informed about your child's progress. If she's responsive to your questions and you're happy with her answers and her classroom style, you've found a good fit.
Dinosaur Activities For Preschoolers Science
Visit Checklist
When you meet with the school's director, ask about the following. • Does my child need to be toilet-trained? Many preschools require that a child be out of diapers. • How are parents involved in the school? A good sign is an active parent association that plans programs like family picnics, holiday parties, and parent socials. You might want to talk to other parents -- the preschool should give you names. • How will the teacher let me know about my child's progress? Parents should be kept informed with newsletters, e-mails, and regular parent-teacher conferences. • What do you do when two children are fighting? It's crucial that you agree with the school's discipline policy. • What's the daily routine? You want your child to have a sense of predictability each day -- circle time, snack, reading.

Apply or Dismiss Automatic Google Ad Recommendations
Ever since Google rolled out the Optimization Score, all accounts are full of notifications and recommended changes that may improve your account score. These recommendations range from keyword suggestions, targeting changes, ad suggestions, and automated smart bidding strategies. Should you apply or dismiss these recommended changes?
In an account, you might see a score like 77.5% and several ways you can improve this score. If we applied all the recommended changes, we could have a 100% score. Although it is a good idea to review each and every suggestion and determine if it makes sense for your campaign goals and account strategy. One of the top recommendations in most accounts is around Smart Bidding Strategies.
Smart Bidding Strategies
How does Smart Bidding work? Google’s system evaluates your Search campaigns and uses machine learning to make recommendations for your account. The system will evaluate settings, historical performance, hour of day, location, and real-time auction information. These recommendations are designed layer on advanced machine learning to your campaigns to help you achieve an outcome. This means you are turning keyword level bidding and letting Google manage it on your behalf.
It is possible that these bid strategies and Google’s algorithms can use account signals to make changes that can have a positive impact on your campaign’s performance. However, we have also had situations where the automated bid strategy was not a good match for our campaign and had a negative impact. Just read the article about When Target CPA Isn’t Hitting Your Target for one possible outcome.
These smart bid strategies can be used to help increase your visibility, clicks, or conversions. They can also be used to maintain a specific cost-per-conversions (CPA) or improve your return on ad spend (ROAS). Target CPA bid strategies may work great for lead generation but may have a negative impact on ROAS. There may be cases where a CPA may be higher for a particular term, but the revenue generated is significantly above the ROAS goal. One of my colleagues wrote an excellent article about the difference between CPA and ROAS that still holds true today.
Notifications
Inside every account, you will see Google’s notifications that can range from highlighting disapproved ads, billing issues, keyword conflicts, as well as other smart bidding strategies. In one campaign it suggests switching several campaigns to Maximize Conversions or Target CPA bid strategies. You will have to look deeper to determine if these strategies make sense for these particular campaigns.
If you click the View button, it will take you to another screen where it gives additional information about the Target CPA strategy and how it will raise your optimization score by +9.9%. According to Google, this score is determined by real-time statistics, existing settings, and performance history. It would be tempting to click Apply All and make these changes, but is this a good idea?
In another account, the system is recommending we switch to Target ROAS strategy. However, the interesting thing to note about this account is that they are lead generation and so revenue is not being recorded. So, this is a bid strategy that would be worth dismissing. This is exactly the reason you need to carefully consider each recommendation before applying them to your campaigns.
Recommendations
Should you make these recommended changes to your account or not? One thing to consider is the machine will never understand user intentions. Google doesn’t know the difference between someone looking for a Charger Car or a car charger for your phone. Just consider how many irrelevant terms show up in search query reports. This is where we come in and are able to analyze the searcher intention and exclude irrelevant terms. Google also does not understand the purpose of your campaign it just looks at data and suggests recommendations.
These bid strategies can be applied to lower volume campaigns, but the machine learning algorithms are going to be more successful with more data. One Google rep said that bid strategies do not work as well with campaigns with wild conversions fluctuations. According to Google support information, they suggest in order to maximize results using Target CPA you need 30 conversions in the past 30 days. Target ROAS bid strategies require 50 conversions in 30 days.
Another thing to think about is your attribution settings in your account. Many accounts are still set to Last Click attribution which gives 100% credit to the last ad click. It may be a good idea to switch to a Multi-touch point attribution model instead. This will give partial credit to other campaigns that are part of the journey. One option might be Position-Based Attribution that gives partial credit to the first and last touch-point and splits the remaining credit to anything in between. You will also want to make sure all your conversion actions are important before letting an automatic bid strategy use that data to make decisions in your account.
Target CPA and Branded Campaigns
In one account, one of the campaigns bucketed into the Target CPA recommendation is the Branded campaign. In this account the CTR is high, CPCs are low, and the revenue is high. The purpose of the Branded campaign is to protect these keywords from competitors, control the ad message, and dominate the Search Engine Results Page. Therefore, using a bid strategy could limit the number of impressions for our branded terms. Do we really want to limit the number of times our branded terms can appear in auctions? In these campaigns, I prefer to use enhanced manual bidding (eCPC).
What if we decided to switch this campaign over to the Target CPA strategy? The system recommends we set the Target CPA bids at $16 based on the account average. One of the branded keywords has a higher CPA at $35, but the ROAS is 1476%. It is possible the system could limit this keyword due to the higher CPA even though it has high revenue. Other options would be to go with Target ROAS bid strategy, but again this would focus around revenue and could limit how many times we appear in the auction.
Another campaign that was recommended for this strategy is our Non-Brand mobile campaign. This campaign had 15 conversions in the last 30 days. According to Google, they recommend you have 30 conversions in the past 30 days in order to maximize the results. Another thing is Google is only able to use the information obtained from Google ads.
  Assisting Revenue Campaigns
In Analytics, we can see that this campaign is assisting revenue to other channels or campaigns. The products sold by this client are expensive and require some planning. Plus, order these items is complex and it would be more difficult to do it through your mobile device. The low bounce rate and high pages-per-session suggest that these searchers are relevant. Another thing we know is that these Non-Brand campaigns serve more as an assisting role to other campaigns or channels. So, if we tested a new bid strategy, we would want to monitor any negative impacts on other channels.
Run an Experiment
Completely turning the reigns over to Google to bid on these keywords based on the CPA would be risky and could impact the assisted revenue. One way to test these goals is to run a 50/50 experiment to see if the system can do a better job. In an experiment, you would copy the original campaign and rung a test with 50% of your total budget. Once you activate the experiment, it is important to avoid making changes in these campaigns while the experiments are active.
In one account, we are running a Target CPA experiment. The experiment CPA is $84.20 compared to our original campaign at $82.56. We can see the average CPC is higher in the experiment, but the conversion rate is also higher. Running an experiment is one way to test out a bid strategy without risking your entire budget. Plus, if the strategy does not work you can just stop the experiment without having to reverse all the bids.
In these experiments, if you do not see the blue asterisk, this means that the test has not reached statistical significance. It needs additional time to run. Keep in mind, it is a good idea to set the experiment end date further into the future. You can always end an experiment early, but if the test concludes early you will have to start over again.
Closing Thoughts
Run some experiments with these automatic bid strategies to determine if they will work well for your campaigns. Also, if you decide to go with an automated bid strategy, it is a good idea to continue to monitor it regularly. In the past, I have had automatic bid strategies that performed well initially and then suddenly had wild performance changes. Also, for another perspective, read When Target CPA Isn’t Hitting Your Target by Laura Lowery.
