Daisy Duck As A Host For The Predator
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok. Here I’ll be going over why I think Daisy Duck from the DuckTales (2017) TV series, would make a fitting host for The Predator, the entity of love and what might happen if Daisy were to become The Predator’s host. This post was also partly inspired by Explained With Bad Doodles’s How DuckTales just FIXED the Donald/Daisy Relationship YouTube video. Also, Spoiler Alert for the DuckTales (2017) TV series and the Green Lantern comics. With that out of the way, let’s dive right in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, I’ll be going over why The Predator might choose Daisy Duck as their host. As shown in Green Lantern Vol 4 #57, The Predator chooses host who are in love, or at the very least, infatuated with someone. And as shown in the episode ‘Louie’s Eleven!’, Daisy fell in love with Donald Duck. And I think that compared to the other versions of Daisy Duck, the one from the DuckTales (2017) TV series stands out among the rest in that regard. As the YouTuber Explained With Bad Doodles explained in their How DuckTales just FIXED the Donald/Daisy Relationship YouTube video, most of the other versions of Daisy Duck were terrible girlfriends since in most of her iterations, and I quote, “she constantly puts Donald down, berated him for things that are beyond his control, is hardly supportive during his legitimate grievances and just doesn’t give as much to the relationship as she takes” whereas the version of Daisy Duck from the DuckTales (2017) TV series had equal reciprocity with Donald which means that Daisy as well as Donald gave just as much to the relationship as they received. After all, as also pointed out by Explained With Bad Doodles in their aforementioned YouTube video and as shown in the episode ‘Louie’s Eleven!’, Daisy understood what Donald was saying despite his speech impediment and was also able to help him with his insecurities about how no one understands him while Donald helped Daisy stand up to her boss who tried to pin the blame on her for the attempted robbery that ensued moments earlier. This all means that Daisy’s love for Donald in the DuckTales (2017) TV series is stronger than it was in most of the other versions of her character since, in the DuckTales (2017) TV series, Daisy gave just as much to Donald as she received and vice versa unlike most of the other versions of their relationship. Plus, a symbiotic and healthy relationship like that would also make it easier to hold onto love since the love someone shows for their partner would probably further increase that partner’s love for them and vice versa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, I’ll be going over how I think Daisy would react to The Predator. As stated in Green Lantern Vol 4 #57, the reason why The Predator went on a rampage with their host is because the host didn’t quite understand love and, as a result, the host corrupted The Predator rather than the other way around like it was with how Parallax, the entity of fear, corrupted their host, Hal Jordan, as revealed in Green Lantern Rebirth #3, was corrupted by Parallax. So, in order for Daisy to keep control of herself while being a host to The Predator, she has to understand love. And I think that she does. After all, as shown in the episode ‘Louie’s Eleven!’ and as Explained With Bad Doodles pointed out in their How DuckTales just FIXED the Donald/Daisy Relationship video, the Daisy and Donald in the DuckTales (2017) TV series had a healthy relationship and empathized with each other’s insecurities. I think that means that they saw each other as equals. And I also think that treating each other as equals makes for a healthy relationship. After all, someone looking up to a person too much in a romantic relationship could not only lead to infatuation rather than love but it could also cause their expectations for them to get too high and thus pave the way for disappointment to ensue when those expectations aren’t met just like how someone looking down on a person too much could cause their expectations for them to get too low and thus pave the way for distrust to ensue as a result of believing that they can’t do anything right. But treating each other as equals can avoid those 2 extremes and just see each other as people. So, given all that, Daisy does understand what love is and might be able to keep both herself and The Predator under control.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, I’ll be going over how powerful I think Daisy would become as a host for The Predator. As shown in Green Lantern Vol 4 #57, The Predator gives their host powers that are just like those of the Star Sapphire Rings which are powered by love. By that logic, Daisy would probably become extremely powerful as The Predator’s host since, as shown in the episode ‘New Gods On The Block!’, Daisy was willing to face off against a Titan in order to save Donald. I think that speaks to how strong her love for him is. Also, as Explained With Bad Doodles pointed out and as I explained in my previous points, Daisy had a healthy relationship with Donald. I think that would make Daisy’s love even stronger since that means it’s also very pure. So, Daisy would make an extremely powerful host for The Predator.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, I’ll be going over what might happen after Daisy becomes a host for The Predator. As I explained in one of my previous points, Daisy should be able to keep control of herself even while she’s a host for The Predator. So, while the Star Sapphire Corps might come after The Predator worrying that The Predator might make Daisy go on a rampage just like The Predator did to their host in Green Lantern Vol 4 #57, they might see that Daisy is able to maintain control of herself despite The Predator’s influence. That might also make them think that Daisy is a worthy host for The Predator. Also, I think that the Indigo Tribe, a Lantern Corps powered by compassion, might see the exact type of love Daisy has for Donald and form some sort of partnership with the Star Sapphire Corps. After all, as Explained With Bad Doodles explained in their How DuckTales just FIXED the Donald/Daisy Relationship video, one of the reasons why the DuckTales (2017) versions of Daisy and Donald loved each other is because they were able to empathize with each other. And I’m pretty sure that empathy is a part of compassion, the thing that powers the Indigo Tribe since both compassion and empathy both involve thinking and caring about others. So, the Indigo Tribe might see how Daisy’s empathy for Donald helped spark her love for him and that might make them think that compassion and love can accomplish a lot together.
Well, that’s all for this post.
See you all next time.

Honestly i need something to give my self a break from the fic I am working on so I'm gonna say something that might be controversial and then try to justify it.
I think that the Parallax retcon is a great retcon. Specifically because I think it improves future stories far more than it detracts from past ones.
Now I feel like I will have to give some context to this belief, I read GL Vol3 knowing that Emerald Twilight was going to happen and while I did see what could in retrospect be good build up (such as the league being terrible co-workers), it felt even more like character assassination to me for one reason the issue right before it now I know of the editorial mandates I know that Emerald Twilight was a last minute thing so of course things wouldn't mesh well but it helped solidify my belief that Emerald Twilight alone wasn't what made Pre-retcon Parallax good change or even interesting but all the work done later.
Now for the good thing about it - It gave use Kyle Rayner who is firmly one of the best set ups for future characters in any store to me but even then I only like Kyle in the more related Green Lantern stories and think he was either wasted or annoying in most of the other stories from that time.
But in the end Kyle has always been a character for me that has always had soring highs and crushing lows that also carry over to read about him though despite any issues I have with Emerald Twilight I wouldn't change it only because of Kyle as he is one of my favourite legacy characters and he is well worth what happened to get him.
Now I will also mention Zero Hour and Final Night to personal favourites of mine and also where I see the idea that the retcon cheapens them which I don't believe.
As for why I think it isn't liked much the stories of Hal as The Spectre now I like Hal as The Spectre but at the same time I'm also frustrated by it because stories like Soul War are really good, but the series I mostly hate, look I understand that Spectre is a really religious character but it was to much and took to much away from any agency for me, and made me feel to much like I was reading two books stitched together so in the end despite losing Helen I think it was for the best to bring Hal back to life.
Now enough explaining my issue of pre-retcon now let's get into why I think the retcon is both good and works.
Hal wasn't made completely blameless by it.
It gave us more lore more aspects of universe to considered
It made the Guardians look even worse (Which is always fun to watch)
Finally Parallax is an interesting type of character (Not including the whole exist to explain away things part of it)
Point one while to a reader the retcon does exist to remove blame from Hal, in universe he isn't trusted right away and most (expect for Guy) do not trust him either at all or very much and also Hal doesn't care I was still him who did it demonic possession or not, and I admit I view most of Hal's behaviour after Green Lantern Rebirth as him obviously putting on an act and feeling like he can't stop and has to keep going to keep trying to redeem himself bit by bit even after Spectre.
Now points two and three go together telling use more about the Guardians mistakes and arrogance, which I have always felt was a big part of them and having something like Parallax just gives another face to it which is always at least interesting if not satisfying to see them be knocked down a few pegs.
Now point four this is entirely self indulgent, as if the rest of this isn't already, but I just really like Parallax I think he's fun to read, has a cool design and all around a really good and a really effective eldritch horror that is still fightable and how he acts towards Hal is what made him fascinating to me a possessive, obsessive in a way that I have always felt is a nice addition to Hal in have he is always unable to keep a relationship and then you have Parallax who wants everything about him and wants to keep him referring to him as his precious and as his, as it has just felt like the thing Hal probably wants more than anything else, someone who wants him for him who doesn't want parts or get mad when he can't live up to the expectations and it is through Parallax an obviously evil and controlling person. This dynamic has always fascinated me.
Now I did use to have criticisms with this retcon as Hal was never scared only angry so why was he possessed by fear? But then I read it again and that Kyle is one to say that. So it hit me as someone who does feel fear and someone whose life has it, this isn't really what happened but how Kyle thinks should be what happened with your home gone and things getting to be too much.
And now the bit that is far more headcannon-ny because there is no true explanation no even a whole he liked the control/chaos that happened and that is the reason that Parallax didn't reveal himself until far later was because he was happy just staying with Hal, like the Guardians were mostly dead and even then he does deal with Ganthet later so any real threat was gone and considering how Parallax speaks to Hal it has always felt to me that Parallax either believes or knows that he and Hal were meant to be together hence why he didn't reveal himself until their merged self was threatened by Spectre because there was some (probably sexual considering the hole gas lighting + wanting his body and soul) happiness that he didn't have before thus having no issue letting Hal do what he thinks was right because he was satisfied just having him.
Ultimately while pre-retcon Parallax is good and does have some very well done emotional moments I much prefer the retcon with one exception convergence Parallax outside of the tie in the possession stuff didn't add anything, I liked there being one version of Hal that just lost it but for the main universe the retcon is just more of everything for me.
Hey if you took time out of your day to read this thanks I know how frustrating it can be to read someone's not super thought out rant so once again thanks.
If you agree with this cool and if you don't also cool it's one of the best things about comics being able to find the characterisation or character that you like and hey if you want to disagree with me cool, I'd love to here why and what you favourite version of Parallax is.

Obsessed with gl: bmp Hal just straight up shooting a man, not wearing any clothes under the ring, and somehow maintaining the feral parallax energy WITH the fear bug retcon. Truly surreal.
IT'S THE BEST SUPERHERO MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. IT'S THE PARALLAX MOVIE I'VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF. IT'S EVERYTHING.
i'm not even joking, i just sincerely don't understand any of the complaints about green lantern: beware my power -- i don't just think it's fun or surreal or camp (though it is, in fact, every single one of those things) but i legitimately think it's a well-written, utterly fantastic movie. first off, it's probably the best animation we've ever gotten out of a dcau movie and it certainly stands out in the current landscape of animated movies as a whole, it's just gorgeous to look at and the fluidity of movement kept making me point at the screen and scream. secondly, it's quite frankly an impeccable adaptation of the intertwined storylines it's playing with.
while i'm definitely a stickler for canon, i also understand dc's animated universe to be something of an elseworlds and i consider the true measure of a good adaptation to be the ability to capture the heart of the story being told -- and beware my power does that like nothing i've ever seen before! the rann-thanagar war plays out exactly as it should, and i did get a little insane about adam strange's comic-accurate scar, and it oddly becomes the perfect setting for this particular version of parallax: it allows hal's motive to stay the same, it's still destruction and senseless loss of life and disillusionment with the green lantern corps' ability to do good that lead him to the conclusion that he could set it all right if given enough power to do so.
my issue with the fear bug retcon has always been the fact that it absolves hal of blame, whereas here he's very obviously in control of his actions and aware of what he's doing, the bug stays merely a trigger in coast city's absence and that suits me just fine (especially when we get the single most homoerotic scene i've ever had the pleasure of witnessing in an animated movie). in effect, hal stays himself. he's intelligent and ruthless yet frantic like the parallax of the 90s had been, he's the greatest of the green lanterns and written in a way that finally makes explicit the subtext that has always been there -- there's only one path after reaching that status and seeing through the guardians' lies, and it's the path sinestro had taken back when he'd been the greatest of the lanterns.
one complaint i keep seeing is something along the lines of this movie having made parallax a 'story about genocide' but that's what parallax has always been, the rann-thanagar war takes coast city's place but it doesn't change a thing about the story beats and hal & sinestro's massacre of the glc (more impactful now that they're together, i'd argue) is no more of a necessary evil that it had ever been before. beware my power is intimately familiar with the story its telling, even if the setting has been changed.
i also think the characterisation for everyone involved - oliver queen and shayera particularly -- was fantastic, and i enjoyed john quite a lot as a protagonist. there's the usual issues, of course, but it's neither here nor there that he'd been made a marine instead of an architect over twenty years ago in geoff johns' retcons. i also don't think they're using kyle's story as much as people claim they are, there's certainly similarities but it's a wholly original thing.
it's genuinely my absolute favourite green lantern movie of any sort, and without a doubt one of the best hal jordans i've ever seen! i'm sorry to have turned this into a mini-review but i CANNOT recommend the movie enough to anybody who might be seeing this. if you like 90s hal, you're gonna love it!!!!!!!!

Me: yeah so I had this amazing idea. I want a fic with a Hal Jordan corruption arc from hero to villain, from green lantern to Parallax. And PLOT TWIST I don’t want it to be the effect of a bug. Or maybe the bug doesn’t do much but amplify his power and the rest is him. I want a in depth showing of how close he was to his dad before his dad died. How he acted like before everything in his family changed.
Then I want everything to change for him. A boy with a broken family, a family who seems to not want him IN their family. A mom who unfairly wants him to choose between his dreams and his mother. A mother who won’t let her son see her before she dies. A older brother who unfairly blames him for the problems in their family and his mother’s cancer.
Then he falls in love with a girl he CANT be with because of… well… himself and his job as Green Lantern. His guilt for turning Carol into Star Sapphire (although again it ain’t his fault).
Hal bonding with Barry and spending holidays with Barry’s family because his own rejected him. Barry always having Hal’s back and protecting him even from himself. Barry letting Hal sleep with him when Hal has no where to go. Barry being his lightning rod until suddenly Barry isn’t.
THEN we slowly see him start to lose it. He’s more aggressive with villains, he physically looks exhausted and depressed. He snaps at people when they ask him he’s ok. He isolated himself
Then Coast City blew up and not only his family blew up but million others. His home city is gone. Then and there did Hal die and Parallax was born.
My friend: This is absolutely amazing you need to write this!
Me: hahaha no.

i was like well he could just date some random dude who's an artist or something and then i was like oh wait. kyle. lmao. did dick and kyle ever have interactions when donna wasn't around? i mean i know dick found kyle's.. spirit? or whatever in jla. but any other major moments between them aren't coming to my brain
LOL, nope, Dick and Kyle have barely ever interacted ever. Just at Hal’s memorial and then the Obsidian Age, which was well after Kyle and Donna split......they never hung out with Dick when they were together, as he was....busy in Bludhaven. Like Donna and Kyle were together during that period when Roy was running the Titans and they had that weird lineup with Terra the Second and Impulse and Fake Supergirl and just....yeah. But point being like, that was basically right after Dick left the team and Kory left to return to Tamaran, so Dick was kinda deliberately avoiding most of the Titans at that time, as far as I’ve always viewed it.
But yeah honestly all my Dick/Kyle thoughts pretty much stem just from their very brief Obsidian Age interactions and then me going like, huh. I could see it. Its more based on just their characters in general, and the fact that I think they have such similar priorities and mindsets as to be more alike than different, but without being so similar that they’re in any way derivative of each other or like....immediate analogues. Like you think of either Dick or Kyle, you don’t immediately jump to the other because they don’t particular stand out as being interchangeable or anything, but when you dig a little into their characters you’re like, oh wow, they have a lot in common actually.
In particular I’ve always keyed into the slightly lonely nature of Kyle’s position as Torchbearer in the GL Corps. A nod to his time as the only GL left, and the fact that he resurrected the Guardians and restarted the Corps, essentially.....so he’s always stood a little apart from the rest of the GLs, even Hal and John and Guy who were still around in some way or another back when he was the solo GL. Its not that he’s not close with them, its just that he has a very unique experience among the GLs where for most of the Corps, they always had the support of the Corps behind them as they became more experienced as Green Lanterns. And the weight of what they all did as Green Lanterns and what people looked to them for, it was always spread among like....the whole Corps, whereas when Kyle was Green Lantern during his solo tenure, like, it all rested on him, there was no one else to look at or look to....all eyes were just on him.
That pressure, that absence of anyone who can fully relate, its always made him stand slightly apart from the rest of the Lanterns, even now that the Corps is back, and its only been heightened by the fact that he continues to have very unique experiences. Like how he was the only one to ever master the full emotional spectrum on his own, without external additives, the unique way in which he became the White Lantern, the fact that he has such a different relationship with the Ion entity than even those others who’ve hosted it, etc. Also the fact that like, despite his reputation among the Lanterns and others, despite how highly he’s regarded by them, that doesn’t always translate into the camaraderie and support you’d think it would, and most of his most intense adventures or most emotional storylines still happen when he’s off completely by himself with no lifelines. Because as much as he matters to the Corps and is valued by them, there’s always this kinda disconnect that frequently translates into a lot of distance between them and him, both physical and emotional.
And I’ve always thought there are a lot of parallels to the way Dick often feels like he’s alone even when in a crowd. That unique kind of pressure that comes from being the FIRST Robin, the original leader of the Titans, the guy who so often has acted as a trailblazer that others followed but without fully being able to relate to that experience of being first, of not having anyone TO follow, to have to make it up entirely as he went and hope that he wasn’t screwing up too much because it wasn’t like he had any precedent to look to or others to compare himself, his triumphs and his failures to. The way so often the buck stops with him and there’s no one really to pass it off to even when its not actually his fault, its more just.....people feel a need, a want to blame someone, and there’s not really anyone else to look at in his stead there. The similarities in how he also has such a positive reputation overall, and is seemingly so valued and respected by his various communities, and yet despite this it doesn’t always translate into direct and tangible support, leaving him often actually being cut-off and isolated during some of his most emotionally intensive storylines.
I think they have a lot of insight they could lend each other stemming from their respective experiences with the weight of legacy, which parallels without being the same....because the angle, the perspective is different with them. Kyle struggled with the weight of having to carry the entire legacy of the Green Lantern Corps by himself and feeling the responsibility of not wanting to let his predecessors down. Dick struggles with the weight of having his legacy carried by so many others and feeling responsible for what they go through as a result of that. And then at the same time Dick also struggled with the weight of carrying Bruce’s legacy as Batman at different times, such as Knightfall/Prodigal and then when he was lost in time, and now Kyle struggles with the weight of his legacy as Ion being carried on by others and the legacy his existence as the Torchbearer is creating for after he’s gone.
Additionally, they both have abundant experience with feeling under a microscope, like their every action is being scrutinized and they’re constantly being compared to the larger than life figure they’re most directly linked to. For Dick its Batman, for Kyle its Hal. That thing where they’re simultaneously expected to BE the equal to Bruce or Hal, or even better than them, but also at the same time being not exactly blamed for Bruce’s and Hal’s mistakes, but treated as even though they had nothing to do with their actions, they might as well have, kinda? Constantly compared to Bruce and Hal and with people saying they would have done this or that instead, but also with people quick to act like Bruce and Hal are their personal cautionary tales and tell them how dangerously close they are to becoming them whenever they do something that even slightly parallels the older two.
Also, they have this distance between themselves and Bruce and Hal....Dick because of the chasm between them during the early years of Nightwing and Kyle because Hal was basically a villain and then dead during his early years as Green Lantern.....but without anyone ever really factoring in that they’re not as joined at the hip to Bruce and Hal as people act like and they not only have nothing to do with the worst of their mistakes, but the older two weren’t always as involved in the younger two’s successes as people credit them as being. And that very niche feeling that only they can really relate to, where Dick and Kyle so often end up being Bruce and Hal’s biggest defenders, and how often this overwrites or gets in the way of Dick and Kyle ever getting to fully express valid resentments they have of how Bruce and Hal’s own actions and choices and reputations impact Dick and Kyle’s lives and actions and choices.
Plus I think they’d just be good for each other - Kyle actually does have the ability to relax and unwind with his art and other hobbies in ways Dick could definitely learn from and benefit from applying to his own life, and Dick has the gravitas and weight of history and experience that means he can really address in actionable ways that Kyle can truly internalize, like the longing Kyle has always had, despite his many accomplishments, to really feel like he isn’t just a hero by happenstance or mistake, that he really belongs among their number. Kyle was a diehard superhero fanboy before he ever got the ring, and you can’t tell me he didn’t have a crush on the first Robin when he debuted back when Kyle was probably in middle school (they’re actually pretty close in age, with everything lending itself to the idea that Kyle’s of a similar age with Dick and the original Titans). Likewise, you can’t tell me Dick has anything but respect for someone who manages to establish himself and his own reputation despite how easy it’d be to be overshadowed by his predecessors and their actions.
They both have extremely parallel storylines even in their particulars......both have been briefly killed then presumed dead and then isolated from their loved ones for a period for a ‘solo mission’ and then blamed for that upon their return, even though Dick wanted nothing to do with that mission and was forced into it by Bruce just like the same is true of Kyle who was backed into his by the Guardians. Both have struggled with suicidal ideation in the past, most notably in the aftermath of Blockbuster and then with Kyle, his subconscious literally created a nemesis for him named Oblivion, who wanted nothing other than his death, because Oblivion was literally Kyle’s own death wish made flesh and blood by Kyle’s willpower and leftover Ion energy.
Both have nightmares of being hijacked by someone else’s will and used as their puppets, with Dick and his many times being brainwashed and Kyle and his time possessed by Parallax. Both have extremely complicated feelings about children that were never truly theirs, both have been the scapegoat for crimes they didn’t commit, both are wracked with guilt for things they choose to take responsibility for but only because nobody ever told them it wasn’t actually their fault. Both are rape survivors whose rapes were never taken seriously or treated like they matter, and both are desperate for the approval of loved ones and mentors who actually do approve of them very much, but just often struggle to show them that in the ways they really need in order to BELIEVE it.
I could go on, lol, but like, you get it. Don’t worry, you’re not forgetting about some super significant story between Dick and Kyle, it really was just me latching on to that one story from twenty years ago where Kyle’s like if we get out of this alive, I want a hug, and Dick’s like deal, and I was like SOLD. And then my brain manufactured all these other reasons why clearly they are soulmates, and thus you have the Good Ship Dick/Kyle, which I shall sail forever more, no matter if I am only ever a crew of one.

Kyle always jokes that of course he fell for Conner; he’s always had a thing for California blondes. Conn rolls his eyes. But he does have a soft spot for California, especially San Fran but he does think California does raise some grand heroes lmao. (Man, I was thinking about a dumb one shot AU; where in that “Wandavision-esque” AU where Kyle unnentially create a reality where Hal never falls and I was, like lmao what if he invisions himself as Conn’s civilian boyfriend, pfff) Okay Conn being shown baby pictures and pictures of Kyle from when he was younger from Maura much too Kyle’s utter horror is so funny. Tbh Kyle’s normality is so a feature not a bug, like sometimes I do really think compared to some of his friends he is the superhero equivalent to not jumping the gun sometimes like the “why not just check if southwest has any flights,” if you’ve seen John mulaney’s delta airlines skit. So yeah, maybe I am implying Conn is a bit attracted to how normal Kyle is for a superhero, I don’t blame him. (I also have the idea that it’s one of the first times he’s seen pictures of Alex Dewitt, since like I do hc Alex and Kyle were high school friends and went to the same Catholic school and were both ironically quite art kids).
Okay that be so freaking funny Jess and Kyle going partying “for intel” and getting hammered because they haven’t had fun in like forever and wake up with the boys staring down at them like “for the mission Hal, that’s what you said,” / “god can you save the lecture for when my head isn’t a Gonna explode.” As someone with an accident no matter how you try to train yourself it to have it, it will split out when you stop trying so like yeah, there are just some words Kyle can not say “correctly” and come out weirdly accident like “scones”
OH! I do think Mia and Kyle would get along, and once again Ollie is alone in his anti Kyle camp, tbh. But I also imagine Mia busting into Conn’s apartment only to find Conn and Kyle actually making out and being so dramatic about it screaming “my eyes! My eyes! I need bleach!” And Conn will never live it down.
Conn wiping his thumb aganist Kyle’s cheek after helping him up after being hit out of the sky, “you okay, pretty boy?” / “doubt I’m pretty after that hit” / “your always pretty, to me anyway.”
Aww yeah that’s what’s been going wrong Kyle hasn’t been dating blonds lol. Ooh yes Kyle’s little world. But Conn is there with him. Would be even cooler/angstier if right White Lantern Kyle did this. So right his subconscious pulls together a wanda vision world after he leaves the source wall.
Everyone is all better. Hal never was Parallax. Guy was never a red lantern. Just right everything is chill but also he’s boyfriends with Connor Hawke.
But then say Oblivion comes in and fucks this up. And everyone is back and Hal, Guy, and John went to go talk to Kyle and he just his memories of Connor are getting fuzzy again and he can’t even remember why it was him in the first place. and just angst you know.
it is for certain a feature. like going to sit with Kyle in coffee shops and have dinner with his mom is just so chill. Compared to you know overly spicy chilly and chaos as people run in and out. Conn loves that too and he knows Kyle love the chaos of the arrowfam too.
Lol Kyle being the voice of reason like “hey he shouldn’t talk to you like that” about the Guardians and the Human Lanterns are like “no he shouldn’t!”
Honestly the Guardians are trying to hard to control the Human Lanterns and they just can’t. but they know there is no better four to complete the highest stake jobs.
I do like the idea that Alex and Kyle were childhood friends too. They grew up together they knew each others hopes and dreams. It just I love them.
Jess and Kyle on a planet agreeing to get info in the party scene. And it’s like you know the Hangover. Jess and Kyle have to track down the other lanterns because they are most certainly not where they started. And Kyle really wants to have his shoes back before he has to face Hal’s hands on his hips glare.
Lol Mia just busting in the window and Roy just walking in the door and immediately covering Lian’s eyes.
“Hey you two little ones around here” Roy shouts
“Not until six seconds ago Harper” Kyle grumbles but Conn is already getting up to greet his niece and punch his brothers in the arm maybe harder than needed.
That is what Im talking about. That’s Dinah Lance’s influence through and through. Conn is always dropping lines at exactly the right time.

Powers and Abilities
Aviation: Hal Jordan is a natural and highly skilled pilot, able to fly a wide variety of planes and jets due to his job as a test pilot for Ferris Air.
Amateur Martial Artist: Hal was trained in martial arts during his days in the Justice League. Though he isn’t particularly skilled, he can defend himself without using his ring.
Indomitable Will: Hal is incredibly willful, which made him a candidate to be a Green Lantern. He is highly resistant to mind manipulation and control, though he isn’t completely immune.
Equipment
Spectre Enchantment (formerly): Hal was once possessed by the Spectre, God’s Vengeance. This gave Hal powerful abilities to strike vengeance on sinners. Although, Hal attempted to turn the power into acts of Redemption on sinners.
Immortality: The Spectre makes its host immortal, they cannot be killed by conventional means. Even most technology and magic cannot kill them.
Nigh-Omnipotence: The Spectre is one of the most powerful beings in the Universe. It has seemingly limitless power.
Reality Alteration: The Spectre can change reality itself on a whim, enabling it to punish people appropriately.
Nigh-Omniscience: The Spectre is always aware of what is transpiring in the Universe, enabling it to know if it is needed.
Divine Law: The Spectre is bound by the Laws set by God and Heaven. The Spectre is bound and limited by God if it needs to be. This can also extend to those who carry God’s Word.
Weakness to the Spear of Destiny: The Spectre is weak to the Spear of Destiny, due to it being used to kill Jesus, God’s Forgiveness.
Green Lantern Ring (Pre-Ion) (formerly): The User has the ability to overcome great fear. This has earned them a Green Lantern Ring:
Green Energy Constructs: Users of a Green Lantern Ring can create energy constructs by willing them into existence. The User’s constructs are influenced by the User’s personality and mental state, an artistic User will have more stylized constructs while a soldier would have more militaristic constructs. Constructs are limited by the willpower and imagination of the User. Constructs can be manipulated to allow certain people or objects to pass through them, become transparent or opaque, or radiate certain wavelengths like Kryptonite.
Kryptonite Generation: Green Lanterns can have their constructs generate Kryptonite if they know the proper wavelength.
Force Field Generation: A Green Lantern Ring can generate a force field around the User to protect them from harmful environments.
Energy Blasts: A Green Lantern Ring can fire blasts of energy. The energy are typically lasers or plasma in nature. The Energy blasts can be attuned to different wavelengths.
Phasing: A User can phasing through objects they normally cannot pass through, this takes considerable effort and energy from the Ring’s battery.
Universal Translator: Green Lantern Rings will automatically translate spoken word into language the User can understand and translate the words of the User.
Energy Absorption: The Green Lantern Ring can absorb a variety of energies; from technological, magical and alien.
Scanning/Playback: The Green Lantern Ring can scan the environment in a variety of ways and playback recent events as energy constructs.
Wormhole Generation: The Green Lantern Ring can allow the User to enter hyperspace to travel great distances in little time, this takes concentration to maintain the wormhole and emerge unscathed. If multiple Users use the same wormhole it becomes easier to maintain.
Limited Cellular Regeneration: The Green Lantern Ring will automatically attempt to heal it’s User if they are damaged. However, it can only do so much.
Pocket Dimension: Green Lanterns can access a pocket dimension inside their rings to store items. Living beings cannot be stored here.
Yellow Impurity: Users of this Green Lantern Ring cannot affect the color yellow, save for dire circumstances where their will is strong enough.
Recharge Protocol: A requirement of this Green Lantern Ring is charging it every planetary rotation. On Earth, this means charging it once every 24 hours.
Earth-96 Story
Hal Jordan. He is considered by most to be THE Green Lantern. Mostly because whenever there’s a new Green Lantern thing, it’s more than likely Hal taking the lead role. Granted, it’s not farfetched. Hal is the one who introduced us to the Green Lantern Corps, he is the one who helped founded the Justice League with Flash, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman and Black Canary (and maybe Batman and Superman too. Retcons are weird).
In MY OPINION, Hal is kinda oversaturated. And too cocky nowadays. At least for a main character. I will admit, him descending into madness and becoming a supervillain was a nice change of pace. Better than completely killing him off for a year and then reviving him. This is what I want to focus on for Earth-96.
Rather than having the blame shifted from Hal because of a retcon saying Parallax possessed (which doesn’t really make sense if you think about it), Hal is definitely the one who came up with and attempted the Zero Hour. Now, this doesn’t mean he can’t have a redemption arc, that’s kinda what Final Night and him bonding with the Spectre was for.
Now, you may be wondering, ‘why do you think Parallax possessing Hal doesn’t make sense?’ The reason I think that is because it’s not consistent with how we’ve seen the Emotional Entities use hosts. Yes, Parallax has possessed Kyle during the Sinestro Corps War and Ganthet in Green Lantern: Rebirth, but Sinestro was Parallax’s host for a time and still could control his actions. Why can’t Hal? It makes more sense if Parallax simply influenced Hal, whispered in his ear about what to do and how do things. Like remaking the Universe?
Parallax would remain bound to Hal even in death, having latched onto his very soul. This would forbid Hal from entering any afterlife, he would be stuck in Limbo until he is needed to be the Spectre’s new host. This would allow him for a redemption arc as the Spectre would attempt to purge Parallax from Hal’s soul. After Parallax is sealed back in the Green Lantern Central Power Battery on Oa, the Spectre’s job is done and he leaves. Hal would get a moment to say good-bye to his friends and loved ones before going to the afterlife, due to my ‘Characters Stay Dead, Mostly’ rule.

Did the Parallax retcon let Hal get off scot-free?
So sometimes I’ve been hearing people saying that retconning Hal as being possessed by a yellow space bug takes away from his character development as Parallax, which is fair enough, but did it really erase all responsibility and consequences of his phase as a villain? Long post under the readmore lol
The Significance of Emerald Twilight
First of all, what good things did Hal becoming Parallax bring to the table? What I like about ET is that is showcased how his biggest strength can also be his biggest weakness – how too much willpower can be extremely damaging. After Coast City was destroyed, Hal couldn’t accept it – until then he always felt that with the most powerful weapon in the universe on his side, with enough willpower he could achieve anything. However, that just leads to him being ten times harder on himself when he makes mistakes. There was no way to reverse Coast City’s destruction, but he still tried to will the whole place back into existence, trying to fix what cannot be undone (hold that thought for later).
Tumblr media
When the Guardians reprimanded him for using the ring for personal gain (which is kinda dumb considering what we’ve seen the rings be used for before), it all came crashing down and he was overcome with grief and fear that he’ll fail again, as well as anger at the Guardians for letting this happen. He became obsessed with becoming as powerful as possible to make things right, so that he’ll never fail again, no matter the cost.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking back on it, we could argue that it’s a story with great potential but was rushed and really only came into existence to try and shake up sales through shock factor. It would have been much better if they had previously written more hints towards Hal being burnt out, putting too much pressure on himself, growing disillusioned with the Guardians and questioning whether the GLC has made enough of a difference. Instead it just felt like they wanted to send him off as quick as possible, which feels like a great disservice to the character who was the star of GL comics for so many years. Plus, to be honest I don’t really like how he ended up like a cliché villain in stories like Zero Hour. But hey, that’s just me, and we did get Kyle out of it all. Either way, everything changed when the fire nation attacked GL Rebirth happened.
Was Hal released from all responsibility?
I really like the early Geoff Johns era before all the end-of-the-universe events, because it had these stories about Hal trying to rebuild his life and make up for what he’d done. For a start, Johns didn’t just sweep the whole Parallax thing under the rug as if it never happened; Hal wasn’t completely absolved of the blame and responsibility. It took a while for his fellow Lanterns to accept him again, and for him to make peace with his past.
I think this could have been done better though – Johns made it seem like Parallax had been affecting Hal since way before Emerald Twilight, so any moments of self-doubt or reflection before that weren’t truly him. I guess this was to push forward the confident flyboy persona, but we could have had something like Parallax only being able to affect him once he’d had his breakdown. Still, Hal gets some blame put on him since Parallax managed to get hold of him precisely because he did the one thing a Green Lantern should never do: let fear and anger overwhelm him.
It’s also worth mentioning that unlike Kyle’s possession by Parallax in Sinestro Corps War, Hal seemed to be more in control the whole time. Whether because Parallax decided to lay low to take advantage of the fact Hal didn’t know of his existence, or because Hal’s willpower was that strong, I can’t really imagine a yellow space bug wanting to do some of the things Hal did as Parallax. You could see it as Hal’s fear and anger being entirely his, but Parallax warping them to the point of destroying the corps and turning against all his friends. I’m just saying, we could have had a bit more of a compromise between making him redeemable and keeping some of his development from ET, but oh well.
Either way, Hal claimed responsibility for his actions and it wasn’t an easy journey moving on from that. Step one – getting over the guilt.
The consequences: Character progression post-Parallax
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know it’s rough when Guy Gardner is giving Hal Jordan a pep talk. This is a turning point though, where he’s starting to regain his willpower and use it to try and fix what he’s done. Here, it’s rescuing the Lost Lanterns, who he left for dead as Parallax. Luckily he saves almost all of them from Cyborg Superman, but he isn’t forgiven yet for getting them in that situation in the first place.
Tumblr media
Much like during ET, he’s still trying to fix everything and make things right, but in order to truly move on he’ll need to do what he couldn’t when Coast City got destroyed – accept that not everything can be reversed.
You can see him progressing towards this in his Earth-based stories. In his adventure with Green Arrow, his tangle with Mongul and his Black Mercies ends with him realising how he needs to focus not on what he’s lost, but on the friends and family he still has.
Tumblr media
He starts looking to the future – he reconciles with Batman, becoming a hero again in the eyes of the most skeptical, he reconnects with his family and becomes an inspiration to them for overcoming fear. We see him take his life back again, piece by piece.
It’s subtle, but by Blackest Night, he’s regained his willpower again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is actually really refreshing, to see a character who’s been through some shit manage to overcome it and not let others use their past against them. Like what Guy said earlier, he now knows there’s no way to erase his mistakes, so there’s no point in constantly beating himself up over it. All he can do is use his willpower to do more good than bad, and make sure something like Coast City never happens again. It’s honestly inspiring, seeing him fight his way to redemption and come back stronger than before.
His development due to Parallax is not just in how he deals with the aftermath, but also in how he approaches being a Green Lantern at all. Previously, Hal was known intergalactically for being fearless, doing everything he could to live up to his father’s bravery. It wasn’t until Parallax that he truly understood that being a Green Lantern isn’t about ignoring fear, but acknowledging it, and overcoming it. He couldn’t deal with his fears last time and let them overwhelm him, but now he’s learnt to be more in touch with those emotions so no one can use them against him again.
However, there’s still a ways for his character to go.
Future progression
It’s only natural that something like Parallax will have long-term consequences, even if they are more subtle. Hal did well in learning from his experience, but since becoming his willful self again it’s like he takes on too much responsibility. When Earth becomes the setting for Krona to capture the emotional entities, he allies himself with characters like Atrocitus and Larfleeze to look for them, instead of asking the Justice League for help, or at least alerting them on what’s going on. Naturally they weren’t very happy about that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To be fair, it would be the opposite of helpful if someone like Superman got possessed by Parallax, and Barry actually does briefly in the same issue. Still, letting people like Atrocitus and Sinestro roam around when you’re unable to keep an eye on them all the time isn’t the best idea. Having the JL on call would have been helpful, and if they’d been around to help even sooner, they could have helped locate the entities. It’s too late though – Krona shows up with some entities already in tow and Hal gets his butt kicked so bad he ends up on the Watchtower infirmary, but he still won’t accept their help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Insisting on flying solo is already a pretty core trait of his, which only gets worse at moments like this. He tries to handle as much as he can on his own so no one else gets hurt because of him again, but all this does is wear him out and push away those who want to help. I kinda wish we could have focused on the consequences of this a bit more so he’d learn something from it, but Johns didn’t really touch on it again before Venditti took over. This theme does actually carry over into his time as corps leader though, but maybe that’s a post for another time – this one is long enough as it is :’P
TL;DR
The Parallax retcon may have made Hal redeemable, but he still had to work for it. Parallax was developed throughout Johns’s run rather than shoved aside and forgotten, and some of the best Green Lantern stories came from this.

Halbarry Week Day 6: Snap out of it!
Tumblr media
Hal finally felt like he was able to breath again. The background noises slowly came back to him as he felt the cold wind brush his skin, making him shiver violently.  He was freezing. Despite his discomfort  a soothing voice caught his attention. The voice of his best friend. Barry must've taken him out of the fight. Probably when he  had noticed something was off.
"Hal...It's ok. You are not in danger. I'm here."
How often he had repeated those words, Hal didn't know.  He had been preoccupied with flashbacks of things that he'd left long behind. Things that shouldn't bother him anymore but did so anyway. It made him feel embarrassed. He had been good at hiding it. Hal knew when to bail out to save his face. This time had been different though.
His eyes wandered down. A soft blue light was gleaming from his chest where Barry's hand touched him. "I'm fine", he almost snapped at his best friend, pushing his hand away rougher than he meant to. Damn. Now he felt even more pathetic, barely managing to look at his best friend. Barry shouldn't have seen this. He shouldn't have to put up with him right now. Even worse, he used his ring. It must've looked bad for him to take that step.
There was a faint blue glow in Barry's eyes and Hal felt like he could still see him being hurt through it all. Or maybe it was his imagination. It felt awful pushing him away like that. "I'm sorry...I didn't mean to", Hal whispered, sounding defeated. "No, it's ok", Barry reassured him quickly. "It's not unusual for you being irritable after your-" "Don't." Hal abruptly cut him off. It made him feel like a complete ass but he couldn't bear hearing his best friend talk about it like that.
Barry seemed taken aback. For a moment they both awkwardly sat together. The gentle blue light disappeared while Hal wrapped his arms around himself to get some warmth.
"Why did you never tell me? I'm not judging you for it", Barry promised. "I know, Bar. This isn't about you judging me."
"Then why?"
"Because it looks pretty shitty for a veteran Green Lantern now, doesn't it? Besides..I couldn't blame any of you if you would become nervous around me because of it. After what happened with Parallax." His mental health had been a major concern in the past for a lot of people even if it had been different circumstances at the time.
The following silence felt like an eternity. Nice as he was Barry probably tried to think of something that wouldn't offend him. It was sweet but sometimes he wished Barry would be blunter. There was no way that he saw him as positive as he always talked about him.
"Is it ok for you, if I put my hand on you?"
Hal frowned in confusion. Great. He was still treating him like a delicate flower. "Yeah."
A shiver ran through his spine as he felt the warm hand on his back, drawing soothing circles over it. Hal hated the cold and his friend always had been warmer than humanly possible. Not by much but just enough that Hal wanted to lean into him more.
“Would you judge Jessica if she had a panic attack in the middle of a fight?”
The question caught him of guard. If it hadn't been Barry, he probably would've worried it was an accusation.
“What?! No! Of course not...but this is- It's different.” “Because it's about you. You don't allow yourself to be weak because you have compassion for others but not for yourself.”
Ok, maybe he didn't like it as much as he thought when Barry was blunt with him. Hal struggled to find the right words. To express why it was different. Barry knew damn well it was probably not a rational thought. He hated to talk about himself anyway or his feelings at least. Show, don't tell was more his thing.
"Why do you always have to be such a smartass?" Hal struggled to smile as he tried not let his frustration betray the lighter tone he was aiming for.
“I learned from the best.” Barry was smiling back at him, although with the worried expression in his eyes, it wasn't as reassuring as he probably thought it would be.
“How about we go to my place? I'm sure the others don't need our help.”
Hal raised his eyebrow skeptical.
“Did you make sure they don't need our help anymore?” He watched Barry trying to hide any signs of guilt on his face that would expose his lie. Barry was such a bad liar, it would've been almost hilarious under normal circumstances. Barry was trying to hide how much he favored him. How he put his safety above that of the others. It made him feel a little guilty but also strangely warm inside.
“Yes.”
Hal couldn't help but to smile a little. It was sincere this time.
“Ok, let's go.”

Could that be SCOTT EASTWOOD ? No ! That’s just HAROLD “HAL” JORDAN ! I heard that they are a HERO called THE GREEN LANTERN ! Rumour has it HE is THIRTY-FOUR and is working as an INSURANCE CLAIMS ANALYST.
hi so i’m just gonna give a brief overview of what hal’s history has been like, and how it’s shaped his personality as well i guess ??
firstly
wow this boy has been thru It ™
how many times has he “died”?? idk
all he wanted to do when he was little was fly planes and now look at him, saving the world, saving the justice league, and in turn having his ass saved so many times. so many.
the passion he had for flying, the lust for adventure, for adrenaline, that’s what drove him for so long, even as a lantern. it’s what has shaped his persistence, and what makes him keep trucking despite going through home foreclosures, getting kicked out of the lantern corps, having all of his relationships disintegrate before his eyes
o yeah and becoming the actual ghostly embodiment of vengeance. yikes.
after being saved by white lantern Kyle Rayner ( a main bro, tbh. a bromance if there ever was one. ) from the Emerald Space and essentially salvaging the green lantern corps, Hal has been working hard to bring legitimacy back to the organization ( despite, yunno, not seeing eye-to-eye with the organization sometimes ). he believes that the corps are much more effective united than anything, and he patrols his sector like the good ole days, as well as helps when the justice league need him.
despite him acting as much the same ole hal as before his evil (emo) phase, he’s a changed man
exposure to yellow lantern energy and the fact his green lantern ring is a construct of his own, Hal treads a very thin line between his actions and emotions being driven by willpower and/or by fear
things for him have always been in flux, of course, and that’s the way he likes it. routine is unbearable. that isn’t to say that having a LIFE is unbearable. like, let’s go a year without maybe being manipulated by the galactic forces of the universe?
that being said, let’s take a look at his personality
+ charming, + brave, + adventurous, + selfless
- unpredictable, - distrusting, - reckless, - insecure
so. def a gryffindor then
as much as he is buddy-buddy with most supers on the justice league, there is a little piece of him that goes... ‘do they resent me?’
kinda like john stewart and his insecurity about the destruction of a wholeass planet
like. ‘do they blame me for my actions as parallax’ and although everyone would tell him ‘no’ at the drop of a hat, he has a hard time...believing it
he has no misgivings about john stewart leading the new green lantern corps. taking a back seat after being in the middle of all the cannon fire for so long is refreshing.
maybe he can start his new life by, like, keeping a job for more than a month and building actual, long lasting relationships. i guess we’ll see what the fuck happens

One hand cups her cheek, a cruel mockery of the affection the man feels for her. The other, Hal can feel curled around the handle of the yellow knife, and his lips curled in that twisted smile, and there’s nothing he can do, nothing but scream and thrash on the inside while the creature puppeteering his body laughs and holds the blade closer to her neck. The only thing staying it being her fear— though the prospect of Hal’s despair beckons so sweetly. They are both at its mercy. And it knows it.
This isn’t nice. You’re cancelled. We’re all cancelled.
@of2814
She’s beaten. She knows she is. Not even a mere mortal could continue fighting the emotional entity who has possessed the love of her life. She’s not sure what’s worse: knowing that it’s parallax and not Hal or the last thing that’s she’s gonna see is his face even though it’s not his face.
She scowls, ever one to fight until her last breath but she knows that it’s a lost cause. The thing was though: Carol lived for lost causes. It was probably why she’d held onto the man for so long, they were a lost cause and she knew it. Carol shuts her eyes for a moment, shivering at the touch to her cheek and she swallows as the knife makes it’s way to her neck.
Her ring’s out of power, got maybe a half a percent left and she knows that it’s either gonna be Parallax that offs her or the lack of oxygen. “You know.” She croaks out as she feels the blade pierce of skin, blue eyes meeting his. Carol knows that he’s in there. “I forgive you, Hal. and I love you.” Because she’s not afraid, she just needs him to know that she doesn’t blame him fully. When she was younger, she would have but now...
Now, she just needs him to know that she doesn’t.
And it’s not him, she repeats to herself. It’s not him killing her no matter how much the monster looks like Hal.
It’s not Hal.
It’s not Hal.
She repeats in her mind like a mantra over and over as she keeps eye contact with him. And fora  second, she really believes that he’s going to meet her on the other side. But she only does for a second as the blade goes deeper and she repeats it all in her mind once more.
It’s not Hal.
It’s not the man she loves and so, she welcomes death like an old friend and maybe, just maybe, she can hope within her heart of all hearts that they’ll get the happy ending they deserve in the next life because this one was over.

Thoughts on the comic book industry, Part 4
Having talked about how the comic book industry is still clinging to creative and marketing tactics that are at least 2½ decades out of date, there's really only one other place to go with this line of rambling. And in the age of social media, it's the most self-evident of all.
Not only is the comics industry stuck decades in the past, but it's hopelessly out of touch with reality, both creatively and politically.
It goes beyond being unwilling to look outside the box from a business standpoint. That's bad enough on its own, but it's a by-product of the creative side of the equation. Creatively, the major publishers are not only stubbornly devoted to outdated and stagnant methods from decades past, but they're stubbornly devoted to their own pet ideas at the exclusion of all else. It doesn't matter how unpopular their ideas are even from the beginning, it doesn't matter how poorly their pet directions sell, it doesn't matter how much the vast majority of fans object to those bad ideas. It's what the company wants, therefore it's inherently good and to hell with anything else. If the audience makes it clear they don't like the company's pet ideas, that's just all the more reason for the major publishers to cram it down the readers' throats. If the readers don't like where the major publishers are going with their products, the publishers aren't above bullying, insulting, and pressuring readers into caving in and supporting them regardless.
Now keep in mind, I'm not talking about the kind of fans who scream bloody murder over an old costume design being updated sans trunks, or who throw screaming hissy fits over creatively stale and burned out creative teams being replaced with fresh blood. I'm not talking about the kind of fans who cry havoc and protest when a franchise needs to be rebooted, or just needs some freshening up. Those are the kind of fans DC and Marvel actually WANTS, and largely caters to. I'm talking about DC and Marvel actively alienating, insulting, and belittling the vast majority of what once was/should be their readership – the fans who truly love the characters and object when the major publishers actively crap all over their characters, betray everything the characters stand for, pull event-gimmicks and stunts that are just purely hateful and serve no real creative purpose, and actively reject and disregard legitimate criticism. Little by little, DC and Marvel have whittled their readerships down to the tiny, selfish minority whose tastes mirror that of the companies. And in no small part has it contributed to the downfall of the industry.
This isn't a new thing by any means. Even as far back as the Iron Age, DC and Marvel were dismissive of anybody who objected to their pet directions. Batman fans for years had objected in the letter columns to Catwoman being retconned by Frank Miller as a hooker, as well as to Batman's increasing devolution from a heroic man of honor to a paranoid, hostile asshole. DC repeatedly disregarded those concerns, insisting that Miller's conception of the characters was canon and would not be changed. (And once Miller's go-to editor Bob Schreck took over as Bat-editor and brought Miller back to DC, everything Batman fans had been objecting to got ramped up a thousandfold.) The Superman books were levied with complaints about Lois Lane's abusive behavior toward Superman before and during their Iron Age marriage, as well as nonstop objections to Lois' '90s-era loverboy Jeb Friedman. DC blew off those complaints as sexist backlash to a "strong woman," even though comic book creators had similar complaints about the direction of the books. Even before "One More Day/Brand New Day" used a satanic pact to end Spider-Man's marriage to Mary Jane Watson, the '90s-era Clone Saga was conceived primarily to force Spider-Man back into bachelorhood, even if it meant claiming the Spidey people knew for years was a clone and the real deal was AWOL. The Green Lantern books respoded to fan concerns about the Parallax-possessed Hal Jordan being reduced to a one-note crazy bad guy...by doing just that and asking fans if they were pleased with the results. And so on.
Jump forward to the 2000s, and what do we have? Stephanie Brown/Spoiler seemingly tortured to death in the Batman books for no real reason, and the writer responsible, Bill Willingham, bragging about how much he alienated the fandom and how "golden" it is to turn your fandom against you. Marvel editor Tom Brevoort claiming on message forums that angering and alienating your readership translates to better sales, because a happy fandom makes your sales too "soft." (Never mind how blatantly untrue that is, especially since the '90s comic boom ended.) The aforementioned "One More Day/Brand New Day," where Joe Quesada and Dan Slott not only went out of their way to insult, bully, and disregard anyone who dared disagree with their vision, but also opened one of the "Brand New Day" issues with a character ordering the readers to "just shut the fuck up and give me your money!" Cry for Justice/Rise of Arsenal, where backlash to the ruination of Green Arrow and Black Canary's relationship was met with a sales pitch for a new Gail Simone Birds of Prey book and where complaints over the needless deaths in the story were dismissed with excuses that DC could have killed off even more Green Arrow characters. The current situation with Marvel's SJW-leaning comics, where anyone who voices objections to bad far-left propaganda and blatant mouthpiece characters is hit with every politically charged insult in the book. Or DC's "Rebirth," where anyone who voices disagreement with DC's current direction dismissed for being "fake fans" or being mocked for calling out how nonsensical and malicious the company's pet ideas are.
Do you see where this is going? Where it's been going for the last couple decades? Over and over again, the major publishers have made a point of ignoring legitimate criticism and feedback, disrespecting a readership they badly need, and insisting on pursuing what they personally want no matter how much it fails ansd how much it drives readers away. The idea that what they're doing is wrong, or at the very least misguided, is utterly foreign to them. If sales are plunging, they don't take it as a sign that they're screwing up or that what they're doing no longer works. They take it as a sign that they're shedding undesirables and that what's remaining are the true believers. They'd rather have total control and a shrinking minority of ass-kissers whose tastes mirror their own than to make the effort to appeal to a broad audience. And for what? Deservedly bad reputations. A dying industry for which history will ultimately blame them. Franchises that have been rendered toxic, or at the very least laughable.
And what's worse, the Big 2 absolutely refuse to learn from their mistakes, instead doubling and tripling down on them. If an idea is conceived and executed in bad faith and it deservedly fails, DC and Marvel don't recognize it as such. They view it as the readers being too stupid to know what's good for them and dial it up to 11. If they lose readers with their bad decisions, they view that lost readership and that lost money as being fair weather phonies. And if readers speak up as to why they're giving up on the books, if they're lucky and don't get insulted or mocked, they'll get a sales pitch for DC and Marvel's other wares. Again, this isn't a new thing. During "Knightfall," when a fan wrote in expressing how he felt Superman's death and Batman's impending spinal injury (a leaked plot point early on) felt like cheap gimmicks, what was the response he got? A sales pitch for The Flash, Legion of Super-Heroes, and DC's Vertigo line. No reassurance that Batman's temporary paralysis would be purely a test of character, no explantion that "Knightfall" was intended to be an examination of what it truly meant to be Batman, just a cheap attempt to cajole an unhappy fan into buying books he may not want.
The prevailing mindset of the last 26 years – if not longer – is twofold. On the one hand, there's the idea that if the characters' lives are made to be endlessly tragic and miserable, the readers can feel better about their own lives. In fact, a DC editor (Kevin Dooley, if I recall) said just that in response to a fan who wrote in about his dislike of the abritrary tragedy that had piled onto Aquaman leading into the Peter David revamp. On the other hand – and this one's arguably the more pervasive – there's the idea that if you make certain characters outright selfish assholes who always get their way no matter how unrealistic it is or how many people they have to stomp along the way, the reader will be inspired and empowered by them. Again, this shows just how out of touch the Big 2 are. Nobody saw anything inspiring about Spider-Man's deal with Mephisto. They saw it for the selfish, short-sighted, cowardly act it was. Lois Lane has been regarded as a hostile and unlikable character for decades, and her reputation only worsened when DC made her a "strong" (re: abusive) woman. Batman's degeneration into a insufferable, arrogant Marty Stu figure was harshly criticized even as far back as the late '80s, with people writing in begging for his heroism and humanity to be restored. And the meanspirited treatment of Superman, Green Arrow, Arsenal, the Green Lanterns, Aquaman, and others hasn't made the vast majority of fans feel better about themselves. It's angered them. It's made them feel betrayed. People go to art forms like comics, movies, TV, theatre, and radio drama for escape. They want to take a break from the bad stuff in their lives. They don't want to go from their regular troubles and see something even worse play out before them. Again, out of touch. The publishers are only playing to a tiny minority that's more or less in total agreement with them.
Now, you could argue that during the '90s, the big comic book boom more or less gave DC and Marvel the freedom they needed to pull off this kind of crap. Event-gimmicks and shock value being big sellers at the time and all. But 26 or more years later, what's the excuse? The industry is bleeding readers not just by locking itself decades in the past, but also by actively driving away anyone who isn't of the exact same tastes as the Big 2 or isn't a social media ass-kisser. Bad press doesn't equal big sales anymore. Aside from the odd milestone issue and maybe #1 issues of certain titles, people aren't buying anymore. And even at comic book conventions, talking to comic book creators past and present...they're fully aware of how far the industry has fallen, and they have their own horror stories to share about some of the bad decisions that have led to this point. But those who are still in the industry have to go along with those bad decisions simply because they've got to pay the bills. And those who aren't so active in the industry know full well that it's unwilling to change for the better.
What makes it even worse is that beyond the creative stagnation and selfishness, there's also a political bent to the way the industry carries itself. In the age of bad feminist/SJW/PC politics, comics have swung very hard in that direction, with Marvel going whole-hog into it. Many of the more prominent creators are very openly far-left, and very active in the social media mob mentality. Some, like Mark Waid, have been very open about running anybody – creator or fan – out of comics if their political leanings aren't far-left. Again, this is an industry that's wildly out of touch with reality. Not everybody shares the same political beliefs. Not everyone who's right-leaning or a centrist (my own stance) is a monster. Not every far-left talking point or goal is a good or even practical thing. Art – a even commercial form like comics – as with all things, NEEDS differing viewpoints, needs differences of opinion, needs all walks of life to be full-bodied and valid. Nope, the current comics industry wants a hive mind in all respects, politically aligned in one direction and mindlessly cheerleading whatever it is the Big 2 decide they want.
None of this is remotely viable. Aside from the major publishers going out of their way to do stuff they know the vast majority of people do not want at all, how do they expect to sustain themselves on an audience that's purely of their preferred political stance? Especially when, as social media and even the behavior of some comic book pros has shown, the far-left is just as extremist and reprehensible as the far-right? (Aside from admitting to leading purges against creators who aren't far-left, Waid also recently violated anti-trust laws to shut down an indie comic called Jawbreakers simply because its creator disagrees with Waid's/the comics industry's politics.) Speaking from personal experience, it gets really tiresome listening to comics creators you like endlessly bitching and moaning about anything even slightly center-of-left, or mindlessly spouting anti-Trump propaganda regardless of whether or not it's true. I as a fan don't like being talked down to, and I as a person don't like anyone trying to bully me into converting to their personal politics. Most people, when they read a comic, listen to music, or watch movies, TV, or plays, just want to be entertained for a little while. If you keep hammering away with bad far-left bullshit and getting mad when people don't just fall in line at your say-so? You're out of touch. You're ignoring the reality of your audience, and of day-to-day life in general. And you're alienating fans and/or potential fans in that way as well.
"But," you say, "if the Big 2 are this far gone, why not just support other publishers? Surely there's other stuff out there to devote your time to!" And that is true to a degree...but with the decline of the comics industry has also come a major atrophy of what's available out there, and how the distribution monopoly has limited the playing field in favor of the Big 2. And this will be where we go next.

I just really hate how much of Kyle’s story had to be erased or buried in order to make way for Hal’s return to the spotlight. Like the Hal being Kyle’s Space Dad thing is fun and all, sure, except for how its also this kinda obnoxious way of looping Hal into being part of Kyle’s successes and triumphs as a hero, like....after the fact though? Kyle’s entire thing is in a universe filled with legacies and mentors and sidekicks, he was the one guy who was just COMPLETELY unprepared for any of this, and just had the weight of an entire intergalactic peace-keeping corps’ tragic past and legacy just thrust on him with no warning, and the thing is....HE DIDN’T HAVE TO ACCEPT IT! Even once he understood what it was he was really inheriting, the sheer scope of it and what was expected of him now, to carry on the work that was intended to be shared by THOUSANDS, just...all by himself, with no one to teach him, guide him, share with him, understand what all this was like....
Kyle Rayner’s high concept is that in a franchise that revolves around the idea that “being a GL means you’re never truly alone, you’ll always have thousands of comrades in arms to learn from, lean on, etc”.....he was the one and only character who had to do all that ALONE. Even now, with the Corps restored and back to its full capacity, its obvious in pretty much every story that Kyle has never learned how to fit in with the rest of them, be ONE of them, like here’s this guy who busted his ass for years and years trying to make all of this possible, bring all of this back, make it so he isn’t the last one anymore, the only one....and then it HAPPENS, and he’s still kinda...lost. Because he doesn’t really fit. Because even among this chaotic community of varied experiences in the Corps, he is the ONE guy that NONE of them can ever truly relate to, not even John or Guy, because while they were still around, neither of them were expected to....BE the last Green Lantern, the way he was. Neither of them ever felt the same responsibility to fix what had been broken, that it was down to them, like Ganthet basically put on Kyle.
And like, the thing was....Hal wasn’t there for any of that really. And when he was, most of it was as the BAD GUY that Kyle was fighting, the one who had destroyed everything Kyle was stuck trying to fix. Yeah, ultimately the Parallax retcon made all of that not really his fault and so its not like Kyle blames him for any of that, or should, but its also like....what are you doing, acting like the guy who was literally the face of his enemy for years and years is like....this Space Dad who thank god he’s finally around to give Kyle the mentoring he desperately needed, when like....no dude, Kyle did everything he’s famous for and celebrated for in canon....on his own. Without you, or anyone else. He is who he is because he had one bad-ass mom, Maura Rayner, who raised him right and gave him the tools he needed to succeed...
ESPECIALLY the one that served him best....the ability to recognize when he didn’t have it handled, and ASK FOR HELP.
Which is not a skill Hal could ever teach anyone lol, sorry.
But like, that was one of the greatest things about Kyle at the start of his story....he was wearing one of the most powerful weapons in the universe, the last of its kind at the time, and there was no one who could teach him how to use it the way he was meant to be taught, none of the teachers he was SUPPOSED to have...but rather than just keep trying to bulldoze his way through things and stubbornly insist well he’d figure things out himself then....he was like, okay, I need all the help I can get...and he literally went on a tour around the country, stopping in every major hero’s city to ask them if they could help teach him stuff they felt he should know. Like that was the main reason that for a long time he was called the only Lantern Bruce had ever truly respected....because Kyle had the humility to recognize he was NOT qualified, and he needed to GET qualified, by any means necessary.
And that’s just...so....Kyle, and so fundamental to his character and what makes him so great, but all of that has kinda been handwaved away, not even like retconned in a lot of places because they couldn’t figure out a way to do that that actually made sense....but instead like this sleight of hand thing where they’re like if we dont mention it for long enough and just hype up the Hal as Kyle’s Space Dad mentor person stuff, it’ll eventually be as if Hal really was there guiding and shepherding Kyle all along, even though...lmao, no, that is quite literally incompatible with the majority of Kyle’s overall story and character arc....which is why for as much as the comics talk up Kyle’s role and specialness as the Torchbearer and White Lantern and other titles....they’re extremely vague about delving into details at this point about what any of that even means and what it refers to and he’s mostly shunted off stage so nobody asks too many questions like, hey if this guy is so important and honored by the Corps, why isn’t he involved more in their biggest storylines and like, front and center?
Its the same problem I was talking about with DC not wanting Dick or the other Batkids to surpass Bruce. DC screwed up massively with their second generation of heroes....Dick and Kyle and Wally and more....because they DID advance the universe’s overall story and timeline, they DID allow the younger heroes to age, and then they DID kill off and do away with a number of the old guard which allowed the original legacies to step up and fill their shoes, AND DO A KICKASS JOB OF IT ACROSS THE BOARD.....
Until, fifteen, twenty years after they started doing that (with Wally), by which point DC’s writers were primarily fanboys who’d grown up idolizing the original heroes like Hal and Barry.....and so they rolled the clock back to allow for their preferred heroes to take center stage again....
Which leaves the younger generation stuck, and with no real place for themselves, which I think is also a big part of the reason their Titans’ reboots haven’t worked. Because they know that these younger heroes are TOO experienced, TOO good to just go back to being actual sidekicks, but they went to all this trouble to bring back all the originals and don’t intend to let them go again any time soon, and so they’re like...well, we can’t have this middle generation fucking things up and making the older heroes look bad, so they kinda just get shuffled around the DC universe and various titles in the hopes that they’ll find somewhere they click, but no idea what to even aim for.
And so you’ve got Kory with Roy and Jason here and then now she’s in space with Vic and a handful of others that honestly feel like they just pulled names out of a hat, and meanwhile she’s got SOME kind of romantic history with Dick, but good luck trying to pin down where or when that even happened, because that would mean committing to them having been ages that just do not work with the ages they try and claim Dick is now and the amount of time the Titans were supposed to have been retroactively active and lol what even.
And meanwhile, Titans and their age group remain the first to get picked off and killed in any major event, Titans keeps being the first book to be axed, they tried to speed through an original Titans’ lineup all the way to a team made up of Tim’s age group in a span of thirty issues, and on and on. And its just a mess, and it all traces back to the sheer wtf of DC having spent twenty years writing about their universe growing up and moving to the next stage of things....and then trying to take it back, and its like no, you cant stuff all that back in the bottle, it GREW. It doesn’t FIT in there anymore!
