yall im totally going down a rabbit hole (researching wayyy past what i need to for the 4maxhalo cowboy AU im planning) but qsmpblr... did yall know binary code has existed since like, the 1500's? not quite as a code, from what i can tell (help me im literally reading some musty old pdf from 1981) but for math, in fact there is speculation it may have existed earlier. (help me i am reading an old math website from 2006 that obviously hasnt graced a screen in over a decade -__-) basically i thiink it was is that in egypt they used a shorthand (instead of modern day calculators lmao) to multiply larger numbers, for example 60X70, by dividing one number by two a bunch of times and doubling the other number the same amount of times.

so binary in computers comes from halving, mathematical roots.

there is another instance of direct language to a sort of binary substitution cipher, but instead of 1's and 0's it is A's and B's and random instead of following a pattern. this was first seen in the 1600's.

then the modern day understanding of binary code to numbers started, in the 1920's and 30's with a number represented in 1's and 0's based on halving, like this:

^^ if you look at this chart you'll see that they halve 125, but instead of using decimals, they have a remainder, and that remainder decides whether it is a 1 or a 0. isnt that interesting? this was being created in the early days of computing when basic calculations took a lot of design and thought.

so calculators, when doing big multiplications and such, will go through a series of simpler dividing and multiplying in twos, based off of the binary code assigned to the inputted factors.

so unfortunately this means that in the wild west (im going for 1870's-90's) they sadly would not know what binary code is :((

FATE: You're looking at mostly ELA kids, here. Me, Enzo, Seth, Cora, Vera- I think I can speak for all of those assholes, but yeah. We were always the best in English. Though Cora also really likes history. You can probably tell.

SETH: i mean im not really all that interested in anything!! i like cooking and playing keyboard, i get options for stuff like that in the future but right now its just,,, eh?

SETH: but if it were anything i guess it would be english! i dont get the kids who hate reading books to be honest, i actually like reading classics! gotta broaden my mind :B

ENZO: pretty on the mark yeah but i used to prefer gym for a while cause like physical dude

ENZO: but i dont think my actual swordfighting skills account for anything when im playing volleyball with annoying mean girls who keep giggling instead of playing the game

ENZO: to be honest i think im the only kid that hasnt died during the mile except nahla cause former track kid

SETH: I HATE THE MILE.

FATE: Can't imagine how the mile would be with people with boobs. I am so sorry. I'm lucky I didn't evolve.

FATE: It is horrible though. It should be considered actual torture - dammit, I know excessive amounts of cardio isn't actually healthy for kids who don't do it all the time! I don't want to break my muscles.

FATE: I'm not looking forward to gym next semester.

LILY: i loooove biology! math and ela, too, but bio is my favorite

LILY: or general science! i love taking care of plants, i actually have like fourty at home! they all have names!

LILY: like why do you think i evolved into a leafeon? honestly i think growing plants in third grade awoke something in me.

LILY: its really fun, but i do have trouble focusing on stuff sometimes. im kinda daydreamy hehe. i really need to get my grades up :( maybe ill see if i can join one of vera and fates study sessions. working next to other people i actually like and commentating in a funny way helps me do it faster.

FATE: You're always welcome. I wouldn't invite someone like Darin or Nahla, but I know you're actually smart and like working and aren't going to piss me off.

DARIN: i hate school :(((

CORA: You do have it in you, Darin. I believe there's untapped potential in academics.

VERA: I also take a lot of art classes

VERA: I would like to get better at traditional because I would like have to have less reliance on stabilizer use

Sorry you’re the only one I thought to ask. As a fellow college student is it hard to have a major and a minor?

hehhe no problems! im a big nerd so im fine answering stuff about college lmao. (this got kinda long so its gonna be under the cut)

honestly, if your minor has a small number of classes, or it overlaps with your major classes, then having a minor is pretty easy. for example, having a math minor is easy when you're a com sci major, since there's a lot of overlapping math classes.

tho if there isnt that much overlap, you do have to be careful that you'll graduate on time. thats your main concern, making sure you get all the classes done that you need done. if you're worried you wont be able to fit in at least one minor class a semester, then you'll have trouble with a minor.

for example, im taking on a com sci major, an astronomy minor, and my college's honors program. theres so many classes i need to get done, but i had the advantage of coming in with a lot of AP credits, so i was able to deal with a lot of my core classes and early major classes very quickly. tho i am currently taking like 5-6 classes a semester so yikes agshdjgasd.

but yeah, ignoring that, a minor should be fairly easy to take on. if you're okay with the extra workload, it shouldnt be that much of an issue, especially if you enjoy the minor you take (i personally like my astro classes more than my com sci classes agshdjgadsh). again, your main issue will be finding space and time for those extra minor classes.

i dunno much about your situation, so if you're really worried about this, you should really talk to your advisor or whoever is helping you register for classes. they should be able to give you some advice on what you should do. i hope this was at least somewhat helpful! good luck with college!
