So I was trying to make a post earlier analysing Mello’s feelings towards Near if he survived the Kira case that ended up turning into a whole story, but I do actually want to make a separate post for it because it’s one of the things I find most compelling about a relationship between Mello & Near post-Kira.

To me, it’s pretty clear in the manga that Mello planned to sacrifice himself so Near would survive the Kira case, and thus did not expect to survive himself. That would leave him extremely lost afterwards, for several reasons. Firstly, assuming he wouldn’t live past the 26th means he hasn’t thought about what a future after that date may look like. So much of his life up to that point has centred around the goal of beating Near, so now that the rivalry is over and Near is L, Mello wouldn’t have had a chance to think about what he wants to do with himself. Secondly, he’s a wanted criminal in both the US & Japan, so assuming he returned the US, he’d have to be extremely careful with what he does and who he interacts with.

Thirdly, and most frustratingly for him, Near has been such a huge presence in his life that I think it would be impossible for him to live comfortably & freely without feeling like something’s missing. Mello and Near are meant to be the two halves of each other - they're quite literally designed to be incomplete on their own - so it follows that they'd both have this sense of emptiness without each other. I think Near would be well aware of this, but I don't think Mello would; instead, he'd wonder why the hell he can't stop thinking about Near even though the rivalry is over, and he was supposed to just forget about him as soon as the case finished. I think he’s impulsive enough to ultimately give into that urge to see Near, or contact him in some way, and he'd become addicted to that feeling of wholeness when he's around Near.

I'm just so incredibly compelled by the idea of him continuing to see Near again and again, despite not fully understanding why, and eventually having that come-to-Jesus moment where he realises that actually he needs Near for the sake of his own happiness - because they know and understand each other too well, and their lives are too deeply intertwined to ever possibly walk away from each other. No matter what he does or who he's with, he will never feel as fulfilled as he does with Near.

I’m going to ramble on the dash but just the narrative weight that Kaveh’s character stories put on the difference between a house and a home and how much he yearns for home keeps rotting my brain. Like it may just be me overanalysing but the fact that when talking to each other him and Al-Haitham say ‘my/your house’ but when they aren’t talking to each other they just say ‘home’ (heck even in game it’s labelled as home!) is driving me insane. This disconnect between them ughhhh they need to talk properly to each other
