BRUTAL BITE - PARADOX POKEMON

There is little known about this creature. One thing researchers have noted is its incredible jaw strength. A single bite alone is powerful enough to crush through bones and rocks with ease.

I don’t usually share my OCs on here but I am so enamored with my most recent boy that I need to share him with the world

His name is Baliri. He is 10 years old, loves horses, and is the most anxious omen you will ever meet. His adoptive mom is trying to help him with that though (still working on finishing her up).

Betelgeuse I was hugely inspired by a bunch of artists and fic writers in the fandom, as well as a few monster artists who specialize in combining different creatures into beasts that actually look cohesive. I’m not sure how well I was able to execute the vision here, but I’m really proud of it regardless! DiamondZ, nonbinary-arsonist, stinkyhorsebitch, and arbuzyansky were the main catalysts for this, so definitely take a peek at their work or give them a follow. I was initially going to submit this guy for a staff art show, but I don't want to rush the rest of it, so I'm just going to post what I have finished here. Design notes are under the cut.

In earlier drafts, I was looking into more serpentine-looking designs since Beetlejuice turns into a snake in the film. Some of the concepts I was leaning towards looked like either a lindworm or centipede, but I think mammalian fits Musicaljuice since he’s “softer” in a lot of aspects compared to his film counterpart. I may look into playing with a more snake/bug-like design in the future. Beetlejuice’s overall look is heavily inspired by Chalicotherium goldfussi, which were huge Miocene ungulates that are distantly related to things like rhinos and tapirs. Given that Beetlejuice is super old, I felt like an extinct animal was a proper fit. On a more personal level, I really like the way these guys look and it was easier to rework their body plan into something that looks carnivorous. That, and I wasn’t really vibing with other mammalian body plans, especially because I wanted something that was close in shape to a human without being apelike. Huge herbivores also have larger stomachs, which I feel is a better analogue to Beetlejuice’s body type. You’ll have to pry that man’s curves from my cold, dead hands. All his forms are chubby and soft, and I’ll fight you over it in the Denny’s parking lot. I also added some hyaenid traits, especially for the head shape and teeth. Hyenas are very social animals (like Beej, except no one can see him), and striped hyenas and aardwolves specifically have these tall crests of fur that run down their backs and back legs that they can raise and lower to communicate. I’d argue it’s fitting since Beetlejuice’s hair sticks up at odd angles and communicates his mood (intentional or not). And hyenas laugh. Granted they giggle when they’re stressed, but it still fits. I modeled his stripes off of both species as well. His hind paws, ears, and tail are all based off of those of opossums. Beej is very “trash animal”-coded, and I felt like the opossum traits would fit better with the Chalicotherium body than something like a raccoon or skunk. I felt a little bad about not giving him a ton of bug traits, so I tried to add mandibles, but they just weren’t looking right in earlier design drafts. I gave him a bunch of small eyes to compensate, but making him look buggy wasn’t the only reason for the extra eyes. We know from early drafts of the musical script that Beetlejuice’s last name is Shoggoth. These creatures are mentioned by Lovecraft in Fungi from Yuggoth and At the Mountains of Madness, but I’m not sure if this implies that Beej is a shoggoth, or if it more so refers to him being able to manifest multiple limbs/shapeshift/warp reality like one. In that same vein, the mouth in his chest is mostly to look scary and is just another fun little Lovecraftian trait that I felt was needed. Same to the tendrils, but that’s also a common fandom trait that is pretty much canon (to me) at this point. I might rb this with headcanons later on.

I haven't seen many people talk about Angel Dust's design. Okay, I've seen people talk about how they'd redesign him but that's not what I'm talking about.

Look at Angel Dust compared to all the other sinners we've come across. The other demon's we've seen thus far are bold reds, blues, blacks, and greys. Yes they have white and/or pastel accents, but wholey there's few that really look like Angel Dust.

(Keep in mind: I'm taking Sinners Only, not Hellborn, or the Seven Sins)

There are a few, there's that Hyena sinner(who's name escapes me), as well as the spider-crab thing we've seen in Helluva Boss(though I'm largely unsure how close the two shows are connected), so it's not like he's the only one that looks like that.

But: Angel, in a place like hell, is rather exotic looking. Bright white fur, pastel pink spotting and stripes. In a place like hell I can see why he would be visually and s*xually appealing, and I'm sure that's part what pulled d*ck face Valintino's attention.

Look at Angel in comparison to his brother and father, Arakniss and Henroin are black with dark red eyes(assuming old designs are still canon). Even in comparison to another spider demon, Zestial, Angel is very different looking in color(I doubt they're at all related but how cute would Gradpa Zestial be?)

Angel very much looks like Molly, who is his Twin and a Winner. I'm not really sure who decides on someone demon/angel form, but that brings into question of who takes after who.

I couldn't find a date of Death for Molly(truthfully I wasn't looking that hard though) but Angel, as Anthony, died when he was pretty young, age 30. Considering Molly is a winner I can only assume she had a longer life, but that's never really specified(yet). For all we know she died younger than Anthony and her death contributed to his drug habits. Truthfully, we just don't know(yet.)

So are angel/demon forms predetermined? Did Molly die first and Angel's form was based off hers since they're fraternal twins? Did Angel die first and his form is just exotic looking by chance? Or am I just overthinking about useless things?

We may never know.

So Minecraft has new wolves!!

I am very happy about this, but it does make me curious what species each variation is based off of! You too? Awesome!

Rusty Wolf = Dhole

Seeing a little red jungle wolf took me right back to reading The Jungle Book as a kid, so I pretty much instantly decided they were dholes! A.k.a. Asian wild dogs or red dogs. They're an endangered canid native to Central, South, East and Southeast Asia, and they live in large clans ranging from 12-40 members.

Pale (Original) Wolf & Black Wolf = Grey Wolves

Our familiar friends have probably always been North American grey wolves, just pales ones! Despite their name, this iconic member of the canid family has an incredible amount of variation, and different subspecies of them are scattered all over North America.

Striped Wolf = Aardwolf

Okay, this is interesting, because they are definitely aardwolves! However, despite their names, aardwolves are actually the tiniest member of the hyaenidae family! Native to East and Southern Africa, they are exclusively insectivores and are known for following aardvarks to use their vacated burrows and foraging grounds. I think it's fascinating that a hyena was chosen for the wolf skins!

Snowy Wolf = Arctic Wolf

One of the many subspecies of gray wolves, arctic wolves are native to the Canadian Arctic and Alaska. Thanks to their territory being generally undesirable to humans, they are the only subspecies that can found across the entirety of their original range. Arctic wolves seem the most logical choice for snowy wolves, through there are several other pale-coated northern subspecies they could technically be.

Ashen Wolf = Northwestern Wolf

Speaking of northern subspecies, let's have some fun with the ashen variant. I'm pinning them as the Northwestern wolf, a.k.a. the Mackenzie Valley wolf! Native to, well, the northwestern part of Canada and Alaska, they are arguably the largest subspecies of wolf we know of. They match up pretty well with their Minecraft counterparts both in terms of habitat and possible coloration!

Woods Wolf = Eastern Wolf

Ooo, okay, I went down a rabbit hole with this one! Eastern wolves, a.k.a Great Lakes wolves or Algonquin wolves, are native to the Great Lakes region of North America. They exist in an identification limbo, with no current ruling on whether they are a subspecies of grey wolf, red wolf, or their own unique branch that drifts closer to coyotes on the canid family tree. There is even some debate on whether the Great Lakes and Algonquin variants should be counted as the same subspecies, which I think is fascinating!

Spotted Wolf = African Wild Dog

The more people who know these good bois exists, the happier I am. African wild dogs, a.k.a. painted dogs or Cape hunting dogs, are the largest wild canine in Africa. They live in packs of 5-30 members and are known their cooperative hunting tactics, using stamina to wear down prey. They're highly social animals, and you'll never find a lone dog.

Chestnut Wolf = Bat Eared Fox

So, initially, I wrote off these guys cause I wasn't counting foxes, but I gave in. The chestnut wolves don't look like much of any existing canines, and nothing that lives in taiga forest. So, bat eared foxes are my best guess. They're small canids native to southern Africa, and are part of the subfamily Otocyoninae, which is a sister family to the families containing true foxes and racoon dogs.

Speaking of raccoon dogs, they're my second best guess for the origin of the chestnut wolf. Their habitat makes slightly more sense, being from the forests of Japan and east Asia!

Thoughts on the poochyena line? I'm sure it's not a popular opinion at all but they are my faaaavourite dog mons 🖤

Poochyena, as the name implies, is actually based off a hyena, the only Pokemon to date that is. I'll provide more thoughts on this later, but points to GameFreak for reaching outside of the usual dog and wolf Pokemon for this one.

Anyway, Poochyena is a dark-type, and while it doesn't really have a theme, it does lean heavily enough into its typing to be somewhat memorable. All black and grey with yellow and red eyes certainly stands out, and the jagged markings suggest a bit of aggression befitting of a dark-type (though ironically, the line is usually portrayed as pretty gentle).

I guess Poochyena's biggest problem is that its mostly just a watered-down version of its evo, as the line lacks a theme for it to play off of in a meaningful way. However, the markings change pretty drastically between stages, so while it's not as unique as it could be, it's not completely forgettable either.

When Poochyena evolves into Mightyena, it keeps the black points on the legs but adds a black mane and tail, as well as some striped markings on the face. The contrast on this design is excellent, and the mostly monochromatic look help convey its typing and keeps the design streamlined. As a whole, it's pretty solid.

I do have one small beef with this line, however—I wish it was more hyena-like. There's a bit of it in there, what with the short muzzle, dark leg points, mane, and noticeable lips. Plus these 'dex entries:

However, it still reads as very wolf-like to me, which I think is a shame because there are so many other wolf-mons but so very few hyena-mons. Hyenas, despite looking vaguely canine-ish, are actually more closely related to cats than dogs, and have some strange anatomical quirks to go with that. For example, they have short round ears, extremely sloped backs, and thick chunky bodies; all of which Mightyena lacks.

Obviously none of this ruins the design; it's still a decent 'mon regardless of how similar it is to its namesake. I just think this is an avenue that the line could explore more. For example, maybe Mightyena could get an evo one day that's bulkier, has way more stripes, and is generally more hyena-like in its anatomy. Maybe only female Mightyena evolve, to reference how hyenas form matriarchal societies.

Anyway, focusing on the design as-is, the only thing that bugs me is the red nose. It distracts from the eye. Oddly enough some early art shows it with a black nose, which makes me wonder why they changed it. Also, the eye looks weirdly emotionless, and just a bit odd when combined with the slightly snarling mouth. That's it, though.

As a whole: this is a fine line. It makes up for lack of a real theme by heavily leaning into its typing, and both stages, while similar, are unique enough to stand out. The designs are also fine—even if I wish they had leaned into the hyena aspect a bit more, they're enjoyable as-is.

Alright Adamandi fandom, need y’all’s opinions. I’m currently trying to make my own designs for the main five, and the current ideas I’ve got are

Beatrix

•Give them freckles, the same type I’ve got, aka the “I stood out in the sun for an hour and suddenly I have three more” type. Just something to make them distinct.

•Have their hair slicked back a bit, in my mind it’s them trying to fit into Ardess more, but it doesn’t really fit. Little bits of curly hair that are fighting against whatever product they’re using keep poking out at different areas of their hat, and they’re just struggling.

•Actually using their goddamn suspenders, because it pisses me off that they’re just hanging there in the actual show.

Vincent

•Big ass hyena teeth, give that man the chompers

•I’m basing his design off a brown hyena, so his hands are gonna be stained with ink and charcoal, and as it goes up it looks like stripes. Gives subtle visual that call back to brown hyena paws and arm stripes.

Quincy

•Sweater vest, but the pattern visually is similar to crosses.

•One fucked up bow tie

•Earrings that king of look like wings, calls back to the angel nickname and their later religious spiral.

Ambrose

•Either a tooth gap or chip in one of his teeth, in spite of trying to be “perfect”, he’s still human and can’t really avoid that fact.

•Hair is a light brown that has a lot of sun bleaching from doing sports.

•Sun motifs on clothing

Carnal Thirst- Chapter One

Chapter One: Ready, Set, Fight The crowd’s roar was enough to almost shake the floor, it made Hiei wince. The shudder under his feet of stomping and clapping, screaming and shouting, made him sneer. Humans were so irritating. He rose a brow as he looked down into the ring, dark rust-brown stains and some splashes of brighter red decorated the pavement. It’d been a while since he’d seen a demon fight ring, not since the Tournaments. He observed the room lazily, body resting against a shadowed wall, the rest of the group was in the stands. He’d been invited here, along with Yusuke and Kurama, apparently this place held some potential for the seconds of the kings. So why wouldn’t the kings themselves come to observe? Hiei still wondered how he had been roped in actually taking over for Mukuro when she’d stepped down. He wanted power yes, but a station such as this was more political than he usually cared for. The demons bashed into each other, and few stood in the ring longer than a couple matches, someone always topping the previous winner. But this new match, a later match in the preliminaries, had the audience more excited than usual, the bloodlust rising to nauseating levels. The scent of iron permeated the air, and the woman who stalked into the arena had the vestiges of crimson crusting her lips and claws. On the sides of her head sat a pair of wide rounded ears and the base of spine sported a bobbed tail. He could see stripes coloring her skin, coming from her back and then breaking off at random intervals. When she grinned, her fangs were pronounced even for a demon. Her youki was low level, but she carried herself with a power she had no right to boast. Hiei cocked a brow, his eyes trained on her, perhaps this would be more interesting than he thought. ---- Your nose twitched at the scent that followed you, the scent you knew too well. Your opponent wouldn’t be a challenge. Unless they were blocking their energy or were like you in that their true strength only came out in a fight, then they were practically a waste of space. You bared your teeth in a snarl, muscles tense and waiting for the ref to announce the start of the match. The feeling of the spike, the familiarity of your body eager to rush into the fight, met you and you teased your youki to life. As a hand chopped through the air and the familiar call to fight rang through the crowd, you called upon your basic aura. Feeling it rush through your system, your adrenal glands opening and pumping hormones through your body to mix with your demonic energy.

“Adrenaline Junkie,” you murmured, no need to be loud about it. You felt the snag, the familiar rush, and you smirked at your opponent as they ran at you with a roar. Colors of smoked amber rushed about your feet and hands, and you flickered to the left, easily dodging his speed as if it were just a human trying to attack you. You appeared behind him, an elbow finding its home in his lower back. He growled, spinning with the momentum of your hit to land a punch in your side. You snarled in response, your arm moving like a striking snake to grab his then weave around it to hold him fast, and his eyes widened. Your smirk became harsh, deadly, knowledgeable. He knew he was out of his league, and you had known it from the beginning. Your punches landed fast and with deadly accuracy. Two to the gut and an open palm to the solar plexus that him reeling at the strength behind it. When he stumbled back you flashed in front of him, nailing him in the nose, and it was too easy, too simple to end it now. It almost felt like a waste to kill him here, to kill him now, he should get stronger, to challenge you later. You snarled and slammed an elbow into his temple quickly as he was blinded by pain and trying not to choke on the blood running from his nose. He dropped to the ground after that, stone cold out for the count. As the wisps of your youki slipped back into your body a sigh left you. Thankfully you had ended it within the time you had, you’d only had a handful of seconds left with the move you’d used running through your system. Now walking off to edge of the stage on shaky legs, not even waiting for the ref to start the count, you crouched down and vomited everything in your stomach until you were dry heaving painfully. When you looked up you felt the prickle of eyes on you. Attention that was too focused to be someone from the rowdy crowd. You glanced around, hoping to find the source of your unease, and you found it in three pairs of eyes. One set green like emeralds, shimmering with calculated coldness and politeness that didn’t belong, one set that was like warmed chocolate, excitement glimmering in their depths, and one set that were such a deep red it’s like someone spilled blood into the irises, and they watched you with curiosity shrouded by indifference. Their energy levels were controlled, but even as tamped down as they were currently, they saturated the air around them, pooling in a thick and suffocating atmosphere even as far as they were away from you. You felt your breath catch, the desire to fall to your knees. You never bowed, but the strength these three held almost forced your hand. Instead of showing your inner struggle, you narrowed your eyes and tilted your chin. Everything in your stance spoke of a challenge, and you knew logically and even fucking emotionally it was stupid to stand against this group. But there was something in you that screamed to be taken seriously, that told you they didn’t like weakness. The red head, the one with the green eyes, quirked his lips in a small smile, the one with the brown eyes cocked his eyebrow and grinned widely, and the short one with the eyes of blood merely tilted his head before blinking slowly. Who were these people? What did they want? Why had you garnered their interest? You shrank away from their intense gazes and left the puddle of sick on the floor to wander into the back rooms. Perhaps if you just imagined they didn’t exist, they’d disappear.

I play a lot with my tfa Mockingbird oc and how they'd be created and introduced to the autobots

I had this old au was was based on the cyberformed earth concept but it was naturally based around a random character who wasn't autobot or Decepticon adjacent and almost in a sorta "okay fuck, the apocalypse happened, now i have to map the terrain and learn new things" way

I frequently find myself going back to the plotline of the tfp autobots capturing a semi-rogue Decepticon who just... stays there and both parties get attached. Sometimes said con was friends with orion and tronus before the war, sometimes not. I have found similar plotlines that are same but earthspark.

I've played around with a bayverse x tfp continuity before as i think they would compliment each other nicely worldbuilding wise

I've probably posted about it before but the idea of Megatron having a friend/amica/whatever in the backround who absolutely gave the shovel talk to Orion and is frothing at the intake to bestow said shovel consequences to Oppy for breaking Megatron's spark

Tfp but Whirl comes to earth plotline, and Bulkhead actually gets super protective of Whirl because he fucking knew what that guy went through and is gonna set things right this time

I don't talk about it a bunch but during Serotonin Syndrome two: electric boogaloo I went on an absolute streak with the tf: a&p au that was very much based on a single valveplug tfa megs x tfp optimus ficlet I saw

The one au I made a loooong time ago around the 4/9/21 thing, which was oc x oc with one having an alt based on draco lizards and the other on striped hyenas— i believe both ended up carrying at the same time, it was Ferrous and Carnage? Yeah.

Zy'Coviru is not a shared-mind chimera, which is why their name is split up like that. The furred one, based off a striped hyena, is Zy, while the dragon one is Coviru. In the canon of the universe I'm writing my stories in, they have come to embrace the power of the Void, which symbolizes inevitability and destruction to counterbalance against the main god, Gahalla, who embodies spontaneity and creation. They're one of the most dangerous antagonists in the series, so I wanted a piece that could capture that sense of cosmic grandeur. Now, if only I was good at writing my longer-form projects in chronological order...the several chapters I have written involving their story is all over the place and wouldn't read well taken out-of-context :(

Hey long time/professional/someone who knows what they're doing speculative evolutionists, is anyone willing to help me figure out a couple sapient species?

I really like spec evolution I really struggle with applying proper biomechanics and such. I have a bunch of ideas for one of them but zero idea of how to actually make the evolution happen?

The species I need help with are under the cut

Tuluans

A mass effect based species. Their main design is based on thylacines/tasmanian tigers. Their lower halves are striped and the stripes taper off towards their spines. I wanted them to have a higher bite force and they had a history of eating bones and stuff so I gave them rounder, shorter snouts like a hyena. Most of them have long tails to balance the weight of kits in a pouch.

They also have antlers that are shed seasonally and are mostly ornamental by the time of the main story, although some people with larger antlers still use them in highly stylized/popularized fights. They have whiskers on their chins and the jelly vestigal organ you get from whiskers when they fade (like in dolphins).

They're still bipedal, I want them to have a mane along their necks and backs.

I know I want to flesh them out a bit more beyond this kinda surface level aesthetic thing I have going on. I don't know what to do about their digestive systems or their musculoskeletal system.

Since this is Mass Effect, I made them biotics kind of like the Asari but more close range. If the Asari are natural adepts then the tulua are vanguards. They don't reproduce the same way as the Asari, their biotic abilities come from their planet being massively and heavily infected by Element Zero while everyone in their world is pre-bronze age.

Everything was infected so most of kits and people initially died in masses from developing eezo induced tumors and cancer until the population consisted mostly of those with the ability to wield biotics even without amps.

I have like three distinct "morphs" for them already but haven't completely designed them.

Warm Islander - Near the Southern Hemisphere on their planet. They were semi-isolated barring trading for a long while. Cold Islander - Lives in the tundra areas. Much better adapted to the snow and cold. Not quite isolated but never really worried about being invaded bc their neighbors were chill and also they lived in the tundra. Mainlanders - The archetypical tuluan from either the woods or near the mountains. There are two mainlands - one is more mountainous and the other is more foresty.

DOG! JUST TALK ABOUT A DOG POKÉMON! ANY DOG POKÉMON!/j (aka I’ve just now realized you’ve also talked about Fidough)

(I'm going to do the Electrike line solely because it's one of the few dog (not wolf or hyena) Pokemon I haven't reviewed)

Electrike is an odd little thing. The head is really strange in particular, with lobed three segments (I guess two of them are ears, though they definitely don't look like it). Green is also an usual color for an electric-type, which, points for doing something different, but I'm not sure why they felt the need to change it instead of just using the blue from Manectric. Hell, the shiny actually does already anyway:

It also feels a bit vague and hard to grasp conceptually. The thunderbolt across the eye and spikes along the tail kind of convey electricity, but I don't know what they're going for beyond that. Supposedly it's based off of the raijū, a blue wolf (more obvious in its evo) with yellow electricity, but it doesn't look like one much beyond that.

I think it might've made more sense to make it blue, remove that half stripe from the back (or continue it down into the tail, I don't care, just don't have it end partway down the back), and maybe raise the middle lobe up so the ears and lobe form a vague lightning-bolt shape that would be mimicked by the yellow streak. That might at least help it convey something a big more clearly. As is, I kind of like it for how odd it is, but it's hard to remember it exists at times.

On the one hand, Manectric at least makes the raijū thing a bit clearer... but on the other hand, the awkwardness is unfortunately increased by a lot. None of these elements really go together; you have the super straight head point with the yellow stopping at the neck in weird shapes, the random fur on the front paws and only the front paws that also has no defined shape and leaves a weird blue band on the toes, the spikes on the haunches, which go in a different direction than the ones on the head, and the tail, which goes in a different direction than either of those two.

There's also just one or two more questionable things in there as well; for example, the random hole in the side of the head (is that supposed to be an ear?? that's not how dog ears work) and the incredibly small hind body with a completely messed up haunch (mentally make the yellow bits blue and remove the spikes and you'll get what I mean).

I think that if all the elements—head, haunches, and tail—pointed backwards, if you removed the chest fur and yellow fur on the front, and if you made the yellow accents flow more naturally, there could be an interesting design here.

Thankfully, the mega helps a lot here. Don't get me wrong, it's goofy looking as hell, but... well, so was Manectric, and at least this design gives a clear visual to latch on to, a clearer indication of typing, and a much more streamlined design with sense of flow.

Visually, the yellow bits are now all focused on the lightning-bolt back (and the front legs; still not fond of that, but they probably felt obligated to keep them seeing as they were on the original design). The colors are also more saturated. Everything flows backward, reducing some of the awkwardness of the original design, and the whole thing now has a sense of movement instead of being stiff. It reminds me a bit of a aardwolf, though I doubt that was intentional:

I do think that the back lightning bolt is too large and could've stood to be about 20% smaller; the red nails also distract from the eye. Here's a sloppy five-minute edit to show what I mean (original on left; ignore the weird looking ear placement on the edit):

While I didn't edit it, I also think the middle segment shouldn't have gone down past the body, instead ending at the same spot the thrid does, and the ear should be folded back to match the same diagonals as the lightning bolt. However, the mega is still a substantial improvement over the original design overall.

I really wish that the mega had been its own evolution. Many mega designs look too similar to the originals to work as evolutions; but in this case, the design has been altered so radically as to basically be its own thing. All you'd need to do is change the colors (as Electrike has a different color, and the line would be uneven if it was one green and two blue); maybe white with blue lightning to reference the raijū thing. It's not like there was any reason it shouldn't evolve, after all.

So overall, kind of an awkward line with a massively improved mega that unfortunately isn't around any more. Ain't that just the way.
