Mission of Mercy: Eighteen
Bucky looked up from his cards and looked at your phone vibrating on the Formica table in Joe’s little kitchen and then glanced at you. Or rather at your back. You were up to your elbows in dishwater.
You’d never been picky about him answering your phone. Or even reading texts. You’d even had him read things to you while you were driving. And answer it… Unless it was from Nat. Evidently you and Nat had conversations you thought would probably scar he and Steve for life.
When he glanced over, it said STARK on the screen and had an awkward picture of Tony shoving a donut in his mouth. That made Bucky snort. And so he picked up the phone, holding up a finger to tell Joe to give him a second.
“What, Stark?”
“Well hello to you too,” Tony scoffed, “Look. Tell Y/N to put her panties back on. I need her to suit up.”
“No she’s-”
“I know she’s out of rotation right now,” he sighed, “But it’s important.”
“Tony-”
“Too late, I’m already en route. She’s gotta suit up.”
The line went dead and Bucky rolled his eyes “Stark’s on his way,” he said over his shoulder.
“Goddamn it,” you sigh, “Bucky-”
“Already going,” he said getting up and kissing you on the cheek as he passed to go out to your car. He knew you had a gear bag out there. Just in case. And when he came back in, he could hear the distinct sound of you trying to change clothes in Joe’s tiny little bathroom.
Bucky snorted and opened the door a crack, just wide enough to toss you your bag. “Thanks,” you sigh, unzipping the bag and pulling out pieces of gear. “Joe, how the fuck do you do anything in here?”
“It’s not my fault your ass is too broad for the john,” Joe said over his shoulder, waiting for Bucky to sit so that he could deal another hand of cards.
“Hey!” you protest.
“I think the kids are calling that thicc now,” Bucky mused, sitting in his previous spot and taking a drink of his beer.
“I think you’re both assholes,” you grouse, wrestling yourself into a sports bra and trying to pull up the cargo pants.
“Sticks and stones, Sunshine,” Joe chuckled, listening to your muffled swearing as you lost your balance and thudded into the wall.
You groan and right yourself. “Why am I even doing this? I’m not even in the rotation right now.”
“I dunno,” Bucky said frowning, “All I know is Stark said you gotta suit up.”
“I really hope we’re not about to go commit fucking war crimes.”
Outside, a motorcycle revs up loudly on the street and Bucky shakes his head, “Your ride’s out front,” he calls, “It sounds like Nat.”
“Fuck,” you groan, “This is going to be complicated isn’t it?”
“Yup,” Nat said, letting herself in and giving Joe a smile. “Intel. And I need my favorite lie detector.”
You sigh and slide the door open, adjusting the pistol in the holster on your thigh, “Because of course, you do.”
“So wait, is this a mission or a girls’ trip?” Joe asked.
“It can’t be both?” Nat said shrugging ducking down slightly to kiss Joe’s cheek.
“That just sounds like trouble,” Joe said shaking his head, “And how the hell is any of that tac gear?”
You sigh and kiss Bucky’s cheek and then kiss Joe’s, “Well. Let’s get this fuckery on the road.”
“Stay out of trouble,” Bucky called as you lope out the door following after your former mentor and current best friend.
Joe watches you go with eyebrows raised, “Is this really a mission?”
“Fuck if I know,” Bucky snorted, “Does it matter?”
“If it’s not a mission what are they doing?”
Bucky shrugged, “Whatever they usually do when Steve and I aren’t around.”
“So… While They’re off galavanting, who’s going to finish my damn dishes?”
Bucky sighed and put his cards down, getting to his feet to finish the dishes. “Okay, old man. I can take a hint.”
________
You spider hug Natasha’s waist, “So, what am I doing?”
“We are going to Paris,” Nat said simply.
“Why?” you ask, “Is it HYDRA or-”
“Steve pissed me off this morning and I want new shoes,” she said shooting you a grin over her shoulder.
You laugh and thud your forehead against her shoulder, “Okay but, how’d you get Tony to play?”
“Please,” Nat snorted, “What dirt DON’T I have on Tony? All I had to do was threaten to tell Pepper about “you know what” and voila! Instant cover.”
“Okay but… did you think Bucky was going to rat us out?”
“Nah,” she chuckled, “But. Better safe than sorry.”
__________
“How was Paris?” Bucky called from the couch where he’d been reading.
“Shopping with Nat is exhausting,” you answer, setting down what feels like 100 pounds of shopping bags. “But I can definitively tell you that it is a very, very good thing that I make so much in hazard pay.”
“Stimulating the economy, huh?” he chuckled, pulling you against his chest.
“Just a little,” you sigh, “But I think I got some fun things.”
“Oh?” Bucky tilted his head up and quirked an eyebrow, “What kind of fun things?”
“Things you’re not going to get to see yet.”
“What-”
But you don’t answer him, kissing his jaw and going to put things away before Bucky has time to get curious enough to start poking through bags.
“When can I see them?” he asked, sitting up and looking at you over the back of the couch. He can see your back. And hear the rustle of satin, silk, and lace.
“Maybe for your birthday,” you hum, putting things away.
“Maybe?”
“Well, you will be 106,” you say reasonably, “And I’d hate for you to have a heart attack.”
You hear Bucky grumble at you from across the room. But what you don’t hear is the rapid patter of his steps. The plush carpet muffling to footfalls. “What did I tell you about that?” he growled next to your ear, digging his fingers into your hips.
“About what?” you ask, trying not to sound breathless.
“About calling me old, you punk.”
“To only do it if I want to get on your nerves, old man?” you tease, trying not to giggle.
“That’s it,” he growled, throwing you quickly over his shoulder. “Like I need anything lacy to want to make you a mess… You whipper snappers don’t know how anything works anymore.”

Krenko’s Guide to Creature Types: Hydra
Tumblr media
Art by  Todd Lockwood
What is a Hydra (flavorfully)?
Initially a creature from Greek Mythology, the Hydra was a large serpent or dragon with many heads and a unique regenerative ability such that if one head was cut off, two more would grow back.
Magic: the Gathering Hydras are mostly the same. They have many heads, long serpentine necks, bodies that are either draconic or serpentine, and frequently have regenerative and head-growing powers. As Iconic creatures, Hydras are rare, but most worlds have one or two.
The only world with a statistically significant number of Hydras is Theros, the world based on Greek Mythology where the Hydra originally comes from.
What is a Hydra (mechanically)?
Hydras are primarily Green Iconics (though the first few were Red), and are characterized by Growth in the form of +1/+1 counters. Though this doesn’t apply to all Hydras, the majority either have X in their casting cost to allow them to enter play with that many +1/+1 counters or have some way of gaining counters once in play.
Tumblr media
Can I make a Hydra deck?
As Hydras are large, frequently game-ending threats, making a Hydra Tribal deck can be difficult. In 60 card formats, it’s basically pointless- a single strong Hydra can kill an opponent in a couple attacks, and the only explicit Hydra reward is the six mana Gargos.  Still, what there is a lot of is +1/+1 counters matters rewards, and using Hydras as a top end in a deck like that is entirely reasonable for a 60 card experience.
For Commander, there’s two main options. Gargos is a Legendary Hydra that makes other Hydras cost 4 less and is decently powerful on his own. The primary weakness of Gargos is that he’s slow, but a mono-green deck can ramp reliably.
Probably more powerful, Zaxara, the Exemplary is only four mana and only grants two, but grants a free Hydra token whenever you cast an X spell. This basically doubles your Hydra output, but also grants Hydras on other spells cast, like Stroke of Genius. Further, it adds two more colors, unlocking a few more Hydras (though still not the red ones) and plenty of options for removal and control that Green doesn’t get on its own.
Tumblr media
Is Hydra a good creature type?
I love Hydra. Hydra is easily my favorite of the Iconics. While the ‘default’ Dragon, Sphinx, Angel, and Demon are all just a 4/4 or 5/5 Flying creature, the ‘default’ Hydra is a 0/0 for XG with X +1/+1 counters… but unlike Angels, Demons, Dragons, and Sphinxes where basically all of them have Flying, only about a third of Hydras share this mechanic while the rest still give that feel of Hydra Growth one way or another. Sure, there’s a few duds (I have no idea what Honored Hydra thinks it’s doing, and I’m not convinced Thunderous Snapper is supposed to BE a Hydra), but the vast majority get across the Hydra concept while also putting their own unique takes on it. Too many Angels are just “Flying, some other keywords.”
Hydra is basically a perfect creature type. It has a mechanical identity that’s strong, but no so strong it can’t deviate. It appears a reasonable amount. As an Iconic, nearly every Hydra manages to be potentially terrifying, but they don’t feel samey to play against the way Dragons and Angels often do.
Obviously Hydra’s a bit light on rewards right now, but that’s fine. I’m sure it’ll get more in the future- most likely in the form of an elf that makes Hydras cost 2 less-  but Hydras are best used sparingly to make sure they’re all unique and special, and right now, they ARE all unique and special. Even Thunderous Snapper, whose mom says he’s special.

Pirate, privateer - what does it matter, really? You and I both know the difference is just a bit of paperwork. Money is money darling, and my employers are smart enough to ignore my methods of getting it - maybe you should be too."
Born in Arkon and raised on the open sea, Gallahan was barely out of the egg when he was given his first job as a cabin boy. Like most of the street urchins in Arkon, Gallahan had been abandoned to his fate by a poverty stricken clan that he never got to know, but something separated him from the rest of the orphans sleeping in alleyways - ambition, and an early realization that in this world, money is everything.
As soon as he could, he got a job on the Corinth, a merchant vessel running the trade routes to the Ashfall Waste. He took to the sea almost immediately, and quickly became an adept sailor. Time and time again, he proved his intelligence, skill, and natural talent - yet, he never got any recognition. Well, he never got any positive recognition. Despite his obvious potential, the ship's captain, a dragon with a quick temper and a quicker claw, hated the boy. More often than not, Gallahan would find himself berated and beaten for the smallest mistakes, and there was no hope of getting the captain to listen to anything he had to say.
And he certainly had a LOT to say. His sharp mind and careful eye for finances allowed Gallahan to notice that the ship's quartermaster had been skimming off the crew's already pitiful salaries, as well as hiding cargo, writing the concealed goods off as 'lost in transit' and selling them at port himself. Although Gallahan didn't have any moral quarrel with the man (in his mind, morality was for fools and those fortunate enough to never have never had to worry about their next meal) he was enraged by the theft of the money that should have been his. Driven on by anger and the encouragement of the only other dragon to notice the discrepancy, Silver, Gallahan attempted to inform the captain of the quartermaster's deceit.
It went...poorly.
Bloodly, bruised, and humiliated in front of his unsympathetic crew mates, Gallahan slunk off into the bowls of the ship to nurse his wounds. When he cried, they were not tears of sadness or agony, but tears of rage. After he recovered, he made himself seem outwardly submissive, obedient to the captain's every command, but behind the mask his hate for the man grew stronger every day. He promised himself that the moment he got the chance, he'd kill him, the quartermaster, and every other sailor who'd ignored and belittled his pain - he just had to bide his time. And bide his time he did, until one day, he spotted his chance.
While unloading cargo in the Ashfall Wastes, the merchant crew heard that a Hydra had been terrorizing the nearby ports, and that anyone who managed to kill the beast and bring back one of it's many heads would be paid handsomely for the trouble. The Corinth's captain, eager for some extra coin, accepted the offer, docked the ship outside the coastal cavern the monster called it's home, and when it attempted to leave the cave, blasted it with the canons. Unsure if it was really dead, and still looking to make an example out of him for his insolence, the older dragon sent Gallahan into the cave alone to make sure the beast was really dead. When he went in, Gallahan found the smoldering corpse of the Hydra...as well as a small, dark niche in the wall, with three pairs of glowing yellow eyes peering out.
It was all too easy to smuggle the little serpent onboard in the chaos of victory, and feeding it wasn't a problem; it soon grew strong off scraps stolen from the captain's own plate. When the Hydra was a juvenile, towering over Gallahan and far too large for the crate he'd stashed it in, he launched his attack. The deaths of the crew were swift and brutal - he even had mercy on the quartermaster, only letting his dear Scylla toy with the man for a few moments before ripping off his head - but the captain? Oh, he dragged that one out as long as he could.
It was more of a massacre than a mutiny. When the bloodbath was over, the only survivors were Gallahan, Scylla, and Silver, his only ally aboard the vessel. The old Snapper became the new quarter master and the first official member of Gallahan's crew. Together they repainted the old ship, disguising her under shiny new colours and a shiny new name - the Hydra. By the time they reached port at Arkon and recruited a new group of sailors to serve under Gallahan, all that remained of her bloody past were a few unrecognizable corpses buried deep beneath the sea.
Gallahan terrorized the sea as a pirate for many years, and his reputation spread across the currents quickly - it's hard to forget a ship with a full grown Hydra coiled around it's masts. It was only recently, after the Tidelord vanished and Gallahan began to pray to another, more devious entity, that he accepted an offer from the Bright Corporation to become a privateer. Although he's not used to answering to any authority other than his own, he's enjoying the influx of cash - the ability to walk into his hometown and flaunt his success without being arrested doesn't hurt either.

What people think the next ancient breed will likely be: Big spook! something that really messes with the standard dragon formula!! A hydra maybe? A dragon with twelve legs and five mouths perhaps? Maybe old timey snappers?
What the next ancient breed will actually be: The Courier dragon breed mother lode. The mailmen finally join the ranks of dragonkind.

Emperors but...for other breeds
My clan (Maudit) is all about curses! And well...emperors are a very cursed idea. The idea of dead bodies forming into one body with all of it’s heads thinking independent thoughts is...honestly terrifying to me. So I decided to make up ideas for what happens when other breeds fuse with another of the same. Base “emperor” term is going to be fusion! All of them will be under a cut because this could get long as I will explain my choices/how it could come to be. I might elaborate on fusions beyond just this one post. Feel free to use these ideas for yourself but just...idk link to this post? I will also be using group terms coming from my post about them. This took me like 5 hours.
For cross-breed fusions it’s a chimera. Named for both the ancient Greek beast, but also because chimera is now a term used for hybrid monsters of any kind. Chimeras usually happen in Arcane clans, thanks to the radiation that affects mass burial holes (which I believe some clans must have, just out of...probability). They can also happen on purpose in Lightening clans (or clans that are working for Stormcatcher himself). After all, what if you could have the energy of a spiral with the endurance of a snapper and the multitude of food sources as a guardian? These experiments are...usually failures. Those that succeed are hooked up to their machines and those that don’t...we don’t talk about those that don’t. I might have to make another post just for types of chimeras.
For Fae fusions it’s a Gentry (pl. Gentry). Named for a colloquial term for the Fair Folk/Good Neighbors/Faeries and because it sounds pretty. Gentry’s usually happen in Arcane lands, thanks to the overindulgence of sheer magic in the ground and the tiny bodies of faes. I say usually because there are always outliers, but I’m going to stick to the main stuff to make this not longer than the Bible. The tiny bodies fuse into one fusion that looks a lot like the Arcanist. Many limbs, many wings, but this time- many heads. Instead of being individual personalities, the Gentry is now a singular dragon, but as a mish-mash of all of it’s components personalities. It also talks as one, all heads talking in the same monotone buzz.
For Tundras it’s a Taiga (pl. Taigas). Named for the fact that tundra is an actual biome in our world, and Taiga is a very similar biome (there are differences but also I’m gay). These tend to happen in the Southern Icefield. When blizzards of Tundras are huddled together for warmth, not all of them tend to make it. In sadder circumstances, none of them make it. These blizzards become Taigas, giant monoliths of fur and outcroppings of ice-formed spikes. Wandering hopelessly in search of warmth. Taigas are their own independent being, completely a new personality that shares nothing with it’s components besides it’s sheer mass.
For Mirrors it’s a Savagery (pl. Savageries). Named for the obvious savage nature of mirrors, but...not an adj. These crop up around the Wyrmwound, which is doing it’s job and releasing all kinds of dangerous stuff into the air. This stuff affects mirrors the worst out of all of them, and so a Savagery is born from wandering groups of mirrors. It is a beast of teeth and wings. Two sets of wings, of arms, of legs, of heads. Perfectly mirrored except for the teeth. It’s as if the teeth from all of the mirrors combined into those two heads. With their two heads, they think as one, but can talk on their own. Savageries are usually made up of two mirror dragons, but if more dragons are added, only more heads will add on. Savageries can be found prowling the wasteland in search of prey.
For Spirals it’s a Hydra (pl. Hydras). Named for the multi-headed beast of Greecian myth. These crop up in the Windswept Plateau, and are formed when a coven is caught in the Twisting Crescendo. More specifically, when they’re caught in the eye of it. The fusion actually forms as the coven is twisted into each other until their very beings meld. Their minds stay separate, leading it to have a call and response with itself. The Hydra stays there, unable to move from the center. Their long tangled limbs reach out to try to pull in stray dragons, hungry for more company.
For Nocturnes it’s an Entity (pl. Entities). Named for the unnameable, how can you name what has no definition? Born of darkest night and with a tendency to leak goo from their eyeballs, it’s no wonder that these bat like dragons can become fused together. In one terrifying goop-covered beast, an Entity has six wings, and a midsection that comes apart, trailing it’s lower quarters behind it’s top half with trails of goop connecting them. Entities occur when strange chests containing nocturne eggs are allowed to disappear into powder. From the powder, like a twisted phoenix from it’s ashes, an Entity arises. Since the potential nocturnes were never born, the Entity is it’s own dragon.
For Bogsneaks it’s a Residue (pl. Residues). Named for what they are born of. Bogsneaks are made of alchemy, but sometimes that alchemy doesn’t work quite right. Sometimes one adds in the wrong color goo or slime and suddenly everything inside of it goes kaput! Or well, not everything. In the burnt remains, a Residue stirs. Blackened and twisted, with clouds of it’s own ash exhaling off of it with every movement, a Residue is not something you’d want to see on a dark night. Fins run up and down it’s body in every direction, hundreds of eyes all peering around to search for dangers. Like an Entity, a Residue is it’s own dragon.
For Coalts, it’s a Flurry (pl. Flurries). Named for what they look as they swirl throughout the floating ash. Coalts come from the Emberglow Hearth, and so too do Flurries. They are Flamecaller’s Forsaken, fire licking at their heels and their eyes and their feathered wings are burnt beyond repair. Forged together in the lava instead of forging tools, Flurries are cast out from the Great Furnace, a shame on Flamecaller’s shining history. Unable to fly with their burnt wings (no matter the fact they have four of them on average), instead the Flurries take to moving along the ground, their dark coloring blending in with the obsidian and ash covered ground. A Flurry, much like it’s name, thinks in scattered thoughts from different dragons, unable to hold onto one. Hatchlings in the Ashfall Waste are told of beings of lava and ash that crawl below and are greedy to find new Coatls to add to their body. Hoping that maybe they could get a pair of wings that work.
For Ridgebacks, it’s a Manticore (pl. Manticores). Named for the spikes that ride up high on every bit of them, and the weaponized tail they were forced to have. Manticores have the saddest origin out of the Fusions (aside from maybe the Taigas), as they are created on purpose. For their spikes can be harnessed to conduct electricity and if you force many of the singular dragon into a containment chamber and force the bodies to fuse through electricity, you will have a being made of spikes, and a being to which machines can be hooked up to. Ridgebacks in the Shifting Expanse get told to mind their manners or they’ll get sent to Stormcatcher and oh that threat works. For you see, almost every schooling program allows the hatchlings to visit The Lightening Farm, to see not only the creations of bronze and copper and silver, but to also see the Manticores in their eternal torment.
For Snappers, it’s an Oread (pl. Idaeae). Named for the Mountain Nymphs of Greek Mythology. Much like their name, these fusions are made under only intense pressure. Rockslides, cave-ins, everything that comes with living in the Shifting Expanse. A few snappers, doesn’t have to be many, but they are left alone. Underground or under rocks, and the pressure and weight causes their bodies to break and shift together. Turning into a rocky form that’s more stone than dragon. Rocks stay stuck in the massive form. It’s in the shape of a snapper, but much much larger, almost to the size of being an Imperial. Idaeae speak as one and think as one, or at least...that’s what we assume. What we hear is that their very voice causes earthquakes.
For Guardians, it is a Cohort (pl. Cohorts). Named for a section of the Roman Legion (a group of Cohorts is called a Legion). When Guardians are all focused on protecting one thing, one thing that is hopefully inanimate, they will all fuse together around the item, creating a hollow center to protect it with. Armored plates fuse together and a dominant pair of legs move it around, while eyes (covered by translucent protective covering) outcrop everywhere on the Cohort to better protect it’s charge. While it’s a living and conscious being, a Cohort has no mouth, so we cannot tell if it remains individual.
For Wildclaws, it’s a Vocifera (pl. Vociferaen). Named for a word that means to bawl or shout (vociferator). These wildclaws look normal, save for two details. They have four limbs (like usual), and a tail (like usual), and a body (like usual). But the heads keep getting added on, adding to the chorus of screams and shouts. The wings also keep getting added on, allowing this beast to remain flying underneath the weight of all of it’s heads. They call and scream out in the night, each head perfectly clear and perfectly aware of the abomination they now find themself to be attached to. Unlike other fusions, this one does not want any more to get added to itself, but in the Shrieking Wilds...it happens. As plant fiber breaks down bones and vines replace tendons, a Vocifera finds itself more plant than dragon, and more monster than plant.
For Pearlcatchers, it’s a Shatter (pl. Shatters). Named for the broken pearls that decorate its body, Shatters are seen most often in the Hewn City, ruined and wrecked like the city that lay around them. There are Pearlcatchers who lost their pearls early on, who’s oily goop never stopped flowing as it polished their teeth and their skin until they were opalescent themselves. Eventually they fled to the Hewn city, picking up pearls and shiny objects to attach to themselves to do something with the goop that sharpened and sharpened and never stopped flowing. Their teeth have become a unit, a single solid unit as their growls rattle against their closed mouth. Sometimes these unfortunate can become attached to each other, this is called a Shatter.
For Skydancers, it’s a Danse. Coming from the full phrase of Danse Macabe, or Dance of Death (or of the dead depending on how literal your translation is). This fusion is the only bipedal one. Or well...it would be if it had the normal amount of limbs. It’s body stretches unnaturally, as if there were multiple Skydancers attached at the hip all together standing on their hind legs. Their faces and wings have decayed down to bone (with no feathers left on their wings), and only their lower halves still have flesh and muscle. After all, they need to be able to ride the wings. From a distance, they almost look merely like a ballet of Skydancers, but oh is the Ballet morbid as ever. No one has ever heard a Danse speak. This occurs at the crux of the Starfall Isles and the Windswept plateau. Spare trickles of potent magic affecting Ballets of Skydancers and forcing them to join at the hips.

Reached Champion
I gotta say, Hero Champion is probably the coolest rank I’ve ever had....One of them, at least. XD
I didn’t use my charger at all this time, due to some bad luck with the stage rotation - Snapper Canal was there, plus a very....flat Shifty Station. It’s not a bad layout, but sniping there could possibly be a challenge. But I’ll most likely try that later, so maybe I’ll eat my words. That’s just my first impression. XD
I do know that the dash pads being the ONLY gimmick makes this easily the most plain Shifty Station we’ve had in months....
Anyway, I’ve been using my Brella and my Sploosh....mostly the former. Mirror matches have been plentiful enough to be notable. I personally thought that Team Villain would be the more popular team, but I can see that I was WROOOOOONG. But, good news is, from the news, I’ve seen that we’ve been more than making up for it with the 100x wins we’ve been getting!
The highlight so far was winning a match as THREE Sploosh-O-Matics and a Splash-O-Matic! We had NO range, and our enemies had a charger and a Hydra Splatling. And it wasn’t a narrow win, it was a curbstomp! It was GLORIOUS! XD
So yeah....once again, I won’t mind if my winning streak is broken, but boy, will I be happy if it continues....XD

Farm Life
(A starter for @buchananbarnes1991 because these dorks deserve happiness)
Tumblr media
“I’m back from fishing... and swimming.” Saburo announced, holding up two large snappers in his hand. “I’m thinking of doing a spicy Carribean coconut curry with these snapper with some rice and red kidney beans. Is that okay with you?” He offered, thinking potential recipies through. Living with Cyron again was oddly familiar, he’d helped him with the hacking business and after all the Hydra shit Saburo lived on the farm, helping out as best he could. Brushing back some of his damp hair, it was evident the mutant was used to living like this. Foraging for ingredients, he hadn’t said much but after losing their father, times had gotten tough for him and Shoichi, often having to improvise. Saburo had learned to cook with what he had, using spices and complementary flavours to make a meal that wasn’t made with the best ingredients taste good. He was here because of his powers, the lack of people meant blocking out all those thoughts or stopping himself from blasting his thoughts into people’s minds with the force of a laser disintegrator was easier. “Let’s see... Scotch bonnets.” He stated, looking through the peppers he had. The man liked his food hot in temperature and spice levels.

Memories of Oceanink Series (Season 3) - Part 10
15. Cross-Division Playoffs
Cross-Division Playoffs is a form of mini tourney (double elimination) format, allowing the upper division and lower division to cross ink. In other groups, the bottom 3 of the higher division standings and the top 3 of the bottom division standings are meant to duke it out. As Div 6 is already the lowest, it was planned that all Div 6 teams will be facing the bottom 3 teams Div 5 standing.
Unfortunately, none of the Div 5 teams could make it, so Cross Division Playoffs became a mini Div 6 tourney instead. The matches were rather short, best out of 3 on a total of 5 matches. Best 2 out of 3 in loser bracket.
On that fateful day, Sot wasn’t able to make it. Furi and Bibu could, Leaf was made to play and arlang joined in as a sub.
a) vs Pier Pressure PiP attendee had Radar, icy, Ezkey and Potato. The lack of obito on the list was a comfort.
Turf War, Arowana Mall - I was able to utilised my Hydra well on that one, taking a bit control of the mid. Victory was quite solid as the slayer trio wiped out everyone in sight.
Tower Control, Sturgeon Shipyard - A (somewhat) smooth journey on the tower. I was also able to attempt in attacking from the left as a surprise attack. The match ended in a KO bonus iirc.
Clam Blitz, Humpback Pump Track - Had fun catching lots of people in the middle and left. Quite a solid and quick win.
Final score: t!slots 3 - 0 PiP
b) vs Verniy Sefaro VS had Kent (expected), BK (expected), Justme (kinda expected) and Riderman (oh, what a surprise!) battling today. I wasn’t too concern with Riderman; word has it that his procon is broken, adding to his lack of participation in Oceanink Series, he must be rusty. Justme, on the other hand, would be a nuisance to deal with, but he couldn’t be as bad as Naj...
Splat Zones, Manta Maria - We had a pretty strong start as we gained the zone in the beginning and was able to defend it. Subsequent recovery also went without the hitch as I took advantage of being the focus fire of opponents, allowing my teammates to recover the zones. When opponents decided to switch attention to objective, I would take them out from behind with my range. As long as I stood on middle, it was tough for them to recover and easy for my teammates to get back into field.
Turf War, Walleye Warehouse - The assistance of my teammates allowed me to gain control of the middle, making it difficult for them to gain turf. The last few seconds was a close call as they managed to pressure me off the mid, but it was a victory at our end.
Rainmaker, Starfish Mainstage - Our push was quite a strong one as Furi was able to go as far as she could with the RM. It was in this stage that I realized the importance of gaining control of the middle + turfing as a backliner. It was difficult for them to push back due to our strong control in the middle.
Our spirits was overall good in this one, as it felt like a good payback to our official match. No dcs from Bibu’s end, “No Naj No Game!” Furi often cheered, and no(t much) harassment received from the opponents that allowed me to do my job.
Final score: t!slots 3 - 0 VS
c) vs Inkpact
Clam Blitz, Arowana Mall - The feeling of playing in this CB is akin to our official match with Inkpact on Snapper Canal: like a whirlwind, they came and we all fall down... Rather quickly too. Also could feel at least 3 of them aiming at me whenever I appear. =_=‘
Rainmaker, The Reef felt like an exposure to our weakness: being scattered, individual fighters instead of fighting as a team. We were quite outplayed in this map.
I was unable to play the subsequent rounds, allowing arlang to sub in. t!slots took victory on Splat Zones - Snapper Canal (due to a dc in Inkpact’s side) and Tower Control - MakoMart (TC was really never Inkpact’s forte), but lost in Clam Blitz - Sturgeon Shipyard.
Makes me wonder if me not participating was a better choice, considering how most of them would aim for me. Had losing me confuse our opponents? >__>’
Final score: t!slots 2 - 3 Inkpact
d) vs Kaiyo To quicken the process of Loser Bracket, matches were shortened to best 2 out of 3 matches, except for Loser Brackets Finals (which remains best 3 out of 5 matches). t!slots landed on Loser Bracket Finals, meaning we had no break at all!
I wasn’t there for the battle, but the battle seemed tough. It was evident that Kaiyo had became stronger, as they triumphed over VerniySefaro on their last match and went toe-to-toe with t!slots.
The match ended with a 3 - 2 in t!slots’ favour, but PipDragon received Furi’s respect. I looked forward to their growth (and lamented at the fact that I could never battle them because things always popped up during our scheduled battle).
e) vs Inkpact
Tower Control, Humpback Pump Track - This was the match I could feel mikkun’s improvement as a backliner, they moved in together with their teammates and supported them well. This was also the first time Inkpact won on a TC match over us.
Splat Zones, Musselforge Fitness - Another match that highlighted how scattered we were in terms of recovery. At least two opponents were camping at our base, making it difficult for us to reach objective. Doesn’t help that when we played like ranked mode. Victory was theirs.
Rainmaker, Ancho-V Games - A painful battle where we somehow managed to gain lead. I dc’d at the last minute, but they were able to defend the lead and took the match.
Clam Blitz, Moray Towers - By memory it was a good game. Inkpact gained good advantage, but we were able to flip the tables, only to get it flipped back by Inkpact again. Our final push failed, giving Inkpact the victory of this match and set.
Final score: t!slots 1 - 3 Inkpact
With that, t!slots took second in Cross Division Playoff that isn’t really a Cross Division, and Oceanink Series came to a close.
