it's a highfleet!au sasrh fic. the title is a mashup of three titles from the OST which are all in grammatically incorrect hungarian (tanc a lelek - tánc a lélek: dance is the spirit; a egyek mogott - a hegyek mögött: behind the mountains; folyo merfold - folyó mérföld: flowing miles/river, miles).

I've been seeing enough ads for Stringjoy that I finally emailed them to see if they could help me out on a string set for the hurdy gurdy. The current ones are hobbled together from various guitar and orchestral singles and they're not ideal.

In light of this, I've also ordered new machine tuners, a right angle screwdriver, and strap buttons.

The current tuner situation is no screws (sort of by instruction due to lack of space, hence the screwdriver, but I also never had them) and there's maybe some slippage causing my issues, so the added stability will be nice.

And if I'm taking the strings off to replace the tuners and the strings I hope to get, then I won't feel so bad opening it up (which requires string removal) to screw in the strap buttons, which I need to do for the inner stabilizer.

Hurdy Gurdy Tangents

In most fretted string instruments the string is pressed against a fixed fret, while in the Hurdy Gurdy, the fret (tangent) is attached to a moveable key and is pressed against the string.

Traditionally the tangent is a wedge of wood fixed to the key by peg or screw and is therefore adjustable in order to tune the note by where it touches the string. These tangents are quite time consuming and difficult to make and so metal tangents have become common.

I recently saw a YT vid (1) How to choose the tangents for your Hurdy Gurdy - YouTube

in which Sergio Gonzales discusses tangents and shows those in his very splendid Zanfoneando, see photo 1, these are bent wire tangents screwed to the key. This method of making tangents is much quicker and easier than making wooden ones and much cheaper than buying the standard metal ones which are about a dollar each.

So here we have a guide to making wire tangents: -

Photo 2 round nosed pliers 2mm straightened wire

Photo 3 make loop at one end

Photo 4 centre the loop on the wire

Photo 5 flatten the loop on a convenient anvil

Photo 6 bend the loop to right angle and perpendicular with wire using pliers

Photo 7 key screw tangent

Photo 8 assembled

Most people seem to sleeve the metal tangents with silicon tubing or heat shrink tubing, not sure if that is absolutely necessary but might be kinder to the strings.

Building my new Symphonia has now started and it will have adjustable wire tangents, not done anything else yet but I have made fifty odd tangents!
