I’m still not sure if this will actually happen, but I’ve been daydreaming about how Rot Merged Pebbles would work as a modded character. And even if this mod doesn’t become a reality – the brainstorming I’ve been doing on his states and abilities will still be useful for other things.

States and abilities are listed below the cut. (Warning – it gets a little creepy in some parts.)
Diet / Eating habits:
He has a total of 9 food pips to fill – 8 base requirement pips, and 1 storage pip.
The rot’s acid is strong enough that he can swallow and digest nearly anything… However, he will refuse to eat explosives, spears, pearls, and neuron flies. (He refuses to eat explosives and spears out of fear of injuring himself, he won’t eat pearls because he doesn’t want to destroy them, and his violence taboos prevent him from committing cannibalism via eating neuron flies.)
While he can eat basically anything – meat is the most satiating for him. Small prey is often swallowed whole as a result of the rot’s gluttonous instincts infecting his mind.
If he enters starvation – the rot will knock him unconscious and take control of his body in its desperation to feed. It will indiscriminately consume all life it can get its tentacles on, and will only relinquish its control once its hunger is satisfied. (Blue X pupils will form in his eyes when the rot takes control.)
Combat and Movement:
He can use his tentacles to grab and pull in prey or enemies to bite them. His bite deals 2.45 points of damage. (This move can backfire if the target has enough health to survive his initial attack.)
He can switch between walking on his legs, and walking on his tentacles. (Standard movement when on legs – DLL movement when on tentacles.)
He can use his rot to hold three items of any type on his back.
Most creatures are frightened by his rot. (This functions similarly to holding a vulture mask.)
His spear throws deal 1.25 points of damage. (Same as hunter.)
He can’t drown, as he does not need to breath.
He has a durability mechanic; it’s basically a health bar – most damage won’t instantly kill him, it will only drain his durability. He only dies when his durability runs out, or if he’s hit by something that completely destroys him. He can also struggle free from grasps at the cost of durability. His durability replenishes after sleeping.
Extra gimmicks:
He starts in his puppet chamber, next to his broken off umbilical. He’s in the endgame version of Rivulet’s world state.
If you take the music pearl with you – it will appear in the sleep screen along with its music. You can also activate it at any other time you want.
He starts with very low scavenger reputation.
Pebbles can read pearls. He also contributes to conversations when interacting with other iterators. If you sit him down next to Moon, she will hug him and hold onto him for as long as you stay still.
He’s being followed by a large number of his and Moon’s overseers.

as for my favorites to play...so far probably arti and SM? I love arti's double jump so much, and being able to kill DLLs is extremely cathartic. SM having infinite spears is also really fun!! They make it easier to kill vultures!! I love killing vultures. I don't know why. it is the thrill of the hunt...I feel like I'm conquering the food chain...hehehe

I still need to play all the campaigns though...I said I would play riv after I had an eggcat skin but now I do amd....yeah. I tend to use all my spoons for drawing but the other thing is. UUUUU THE EMOTIONAL GUTPUNCH...so im like "ok ill just stream it to my friends for support" but. WHICH friends. I domt kmow!! problems of someone with lots of friends who dont overlap. Saint is rivulet but multiplied lol...
I have my funny iterator oc skin and a campaign to use it in but...yeah. I do wanna edit it a bit if eti is ok with it...just for shenanigans with the saint sprites lol
for gourmand i just. forgor. for their skin i like using jades gourm bc they look like a little cinnamon roll it is So Cute omg. gourm's crafting is rlly fun though!!
also i seem to draw the scugs differently every time...it is fun to experiment

The rot is more advanced than that, I think
Because what the pearl is saying isn't how the rot in general is, but it's creation process.
We also don't know what specific genome it's referring to (presumably a case by case basis?)
Anyhow, pebbles seems to have lost control and now it's mutating
I theorize that it originally was just growing on the walls, then developed touch and tendrils to be able to hunt passing organisms(maybe neurons?) And then eventually developed mobility and hearing to hunt better
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but you can only kill DLLs by hitting their core right? Which implies a brain.
While similar to cancer, at this point the rot is its own species
Oh well I was talking more so about it's origin!
I agree on the case by case basis?? I doubt there's a single rot formula, it's easier to get things wrong than right...
Also things don't need to have a brain to function and exist. I am no expert, but if you rip a tentacle off a jelly fish it feels like it will be fine compared to y'know. Spearing it's center.
The rot is an organism of some kind maybe, but I think a very simple one? I wouldn't call it a species just because of it not being able to live without it's host. It's a part of Pebbles, it's his own body killing him, not an animal.
I do think it probably started out chewing walls before it managed to progress further. Either way it dies out alone it can't reproduce outside of Pebbles really I think.. and we haven't seen it infect other organisms.
Hunter's rot doesn't spread it dies with it and so does Pebbles'.

okay so first of all our lord and savior raindb legacy mods https://www.raindb.net/legacy.html so first installing 1.5: you can have 1.5 and 1.9 versions completely separately and that's what I recommend. Go into your steam games folder, rename rw to anything else, the go to steam library -> properties -> betas -> choose 1.51 and it'll create a separate folder and install it there, leaving 1.9 files intact. When its done downloading, rename the 1.5 folder to anything else again (personally i have it as "Rain World 1.5"), rename the original 1.9 folder back to just rw and once again go to properties -> betas and choose none, it'll verify 1.9 files and leave 1.5 alone. BOOM! You have both of them installed.
now that you have that figured out, 1.5 mods: you need bepinex - extract the contents into 1.5 folder and BOI mod manager - extract it anywhere, run it and and choose the path to your 1.5 game. It will create a "Mods" folder in your game's root folder, this is where you're gonna have to put all the .dll mod files. AND NOW ! Custom region support - you will be able to download and install regions in an in-game mods menu. (feel free to contact me if you need help!) OKAY NOW TO ACTUAL REGION MODS all that i can remember rn and my rating Old New Horizons - one of my absolute favourite. But I do recommend playing it with dev tools otherwise it can be very frustrating. It's a collection of scrapped custom regions so some parts are not very well designed but overall it's a delight that offers A LOT and has some of the most unique level designs and mechanics. There's a portal reference region. And a build-a-ladder room. If you even care.
Arid barrens - a very solid mod. It adds a desert region thats very fun to explore, has an above dround and below ground routes which are pretty cool to explore. Drowned Pantheon - really loved that one. Has a nice vibe and there are bells :'] Aether Ridge - mixed feeling. It's pretty cool but very brutal. And MASSIVE. One hell of a skill check, also has manyt one way routes and dead ends. Personally was not a fan. The Mast - I ! LOVE ! CLIMBING ! UP ! Very cool solid region, similar vibe to atop the tallest tower in downpour. Would recommend. The Root - didn't like it. It's the leg but more. As an underhang hater would not recommend. Hanging Gardens - very pretty and chill I especially loved the design of the upper levels. Also Hollow Knight fans will see a lot of familiar architechture. Also it only connects to two custom regions which is interesting. Coral Caves - has a lot of frustrating water mechanics and one way paths. Except you don't realize that until the cycle is already wasted. But the vibe is cool. Would still not recommend honestly. One of requirements for Hanging Garden. Badlands - similar vibe to Arid Barrens, liked this one! Also has an above ground and below ground routes and overall is a nice enjoyable experience, it's also not a very big region, so I'd say give it a shot. Undersea - was not a fan, has some very cool moments but all also has some very frustrating moments. unsure about this one. Tainted overpass - played just a bit but from I saw there was nothing of note particularly. No cool mechanics or level design. Scorched District - UM. YES ?? IT'S VERY GOOD ??? METROPOLIS BEFORE METROPOLIS. Pilgrims Ascent - the leg but green. Side House - very different from other regions I mentioned, it's a collection of unused vanilla rooms, they aren't particularly good or flow together in one region, but it's a very curios thing to see and has some slightly different familiar rooms! Aqueducts - a challenge region, meant to be played by hunter, has a nice feel to it, some rooms are very interesting, but overall. Was not a fan, call it a skill issue. Underbelly - did not like it. Also kinda reminds me of the exterior (minus the wall) and superstructure, do you see a pattern? I certainly do. Anyway when playing I got stuck repeatedly dying in an area where you're supposed to wall jump. between those five pebbsi zap thingies in recursive transform arrays. Howling Rift - it's a very cool a well made region, I'm sure it's many people's fav and I recommend checking it out. Personally did not care for it tho. Grand Reservoir - recaptures that feel or going into shaded for the first time, has some frustrating platforming, but I loved it nonetheless, the tight pathways and spider enemies bring just the right level of unsetteling. Swamplands - I remember playing it for sure, but I don't even remember what was there. Also have a feeling I didn't like it ? Don't take my word for it tho. Pyramid Wall - what it says on the tin. The wall, but its a pyramid. Drainage System + - I like it :'] you will like it too if you like drainage and hate it if you don't.
Wet World - it's funne, Outskirts but more water, I liked it, but also some parts are very bullshit. Would you like a BLL in your outskirts sir ? Floating Isles - all the worst parts of sky islands. No thank you. ANDDD that's all, I'm sure there are more region mods, but I was only looking through the ones on Raindb and besides floating isles I couldn't remember more. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Ok, so, like, I have this really cool idea for an AU type of thing for rainworld called "Inv-festation" (bad name, i know.), but it would be a ramble and a half because I would have to talk about each character individually, their backstory, then get the actual story of it.
But to sort of give you a breakdown of Inv-festation;
basically, it takes place in...
A: FP's superstructure
And B: the fallen superstructure of LTTM
The rot is sort of evolved and is now a disease of sorts.
Think hunter except it can be contracted and mutates them in a different way than normal.
Instead of the host being more of a catalyst for a DLL to form, it moreso uses them as a kind of puppet.

The scavs are also cultists, I guess

accidentally made a new character for an april fools joke on discord. here's Rotcat! I'm not sure what they are or where they come from, but they are definitely more Rot than Cat. Putting gameplay thoughts under a readmore because it got longer than i wanted:
- can climb walls, can't drown, and can carry an item on it's back (equivalent of swallowing something, cannot dual-wield spears), Monk damage i think
If they seem overpowered, idk what to tell you. I guess it's kind of intentional considering how annoying the rot is in-game
- they don't have a mouth, and pull food into the growths on their back and tail in order to feed (gets fewer pips from plants than meat, like Hunter, has a high food requirement, probably like 7 | 3 or something)
- starts with very low reputation with all other creatures
- ignored by brother long legs and proto long legs, but DLLs and MLLs will still hunt them. they can't eat neuron flies or other rot creatures
- larger than a normal slugcat (about 1 head taller), but moves slower and has a slightly weaker jump
- similar point in the timeline to survivor and monk
TENTACLE MECHANICS yay ->
if they have at least one hand empty, pressing the throw button will launch a tentacle towards a creature or object (similar trajectory to rocks), the tentacle will begin to retract regardless of whether or not it hits something, pulling the grabbed item towards rotcat (items carried by creatures take priority over the creature itself in terms of what is grabbed first). You can let go of a trapped item or creature the same way you let go of other items.
Tentacles are not prehensile and cannot be controlled beyond choosing the direction they are launched in. You can have a maximum of two tentacles out at a time.
Smaller creatures cannot escape the grip of a tentacle by struggling and will be instantly killed once they are absorbed, but anything larger than rotcat must be stunned or near death before it can be absorbed. Creatures larger than a lizard have to be fully dead.
Creatures like scavengers or red spiders can still throw/spit at rotcat while in the grip of a tentacle and can escape if they hit/paralyze rotcat (unless they are stunned/dead, of course). Similarly, lizards can still bite or kill rotcat while they are in the grip of a tentacle and are not stunned or dead.
