summary: luke hughes joins the devils and meets his captain's sister. someone he should never find himself falling for, but here we are.

Luke Hughes was transferring over from the University of Michigan at the end of March. The team wanted him to begin practicing with the whole team since he would be joining the Devils full-time at the beginning of the new season. You had moved over from Switzerland to join your brother, Nico, at the beginning of his third year on the Devils. You loved it in New Jersey. You were close with Nico’s teammates, and everyone knew you as the Captain’s sister.

Luke had never felt so nervous, his hands shaking as he pulled his pads on over his shoulders. Jack had not shut up about his younger brother joining the team in New Jersey. It was always cold at the training facility; there were no fans around to warm the space. You always joined the team for practice, and the guys loved you. You had taken Nico’s extra hoodie from the back of his car.

You were walking to sit by the ice during practice, walking toward your normal spot next to Amanda. “(Y/N)! (Y/N)! (Y/N)!” Jack repeatedly called your name as he ran out from the direction of the dressing room. Jack was rushing to greet you, almost falling over since he was in his skates. “Luke is here! You gotta meet him!”

You had never been nervous meeting a Hughes brother. You had met Quinn, and you even considered Jack a close friend. Every time Luke was in town in the past, you had always missed him. You were either busy or just never got the chance to officially meet him. Luke was trailing behind Jack, not knowing his way around the facility fully yet. “Lukey! this is (Y/N) Hischier, Nico’s sister!” Jack introduced the two of you.

You met eyes with Luke, your face suddenly felt hot. “Hi, Luke,” you smiled softly after you finally found your voice. He fumbled with his sticks and gloves as he tried to figure out if a handshake was proper, his sticks almost clattering to the ground, but you caught them. “Hi,” he gulped out finally.

Jack rushed off past the two of you, heading to the bench. A couple of the other players pass by, Dougie and Miles greeting you by ruffling your hair. “Are you liking New Jersey?” you questioned Luke. The boys out on the ice watched Luke and you talk to one another, quietly whispering about the two of you. “Nico is going to kill him,” Miles sang to his teammates.

Nico emerged from the direction of the dressing room. “Luke, I see you have met my sister,” Nico said, affirming the fact that you are his sister. Luke gave you a small wave as he joined the rest of the team on the ice.

After practice, Luke was sitting in his new stall. “Not to be a hardass captain, but there’s one rule when it comes to my sister. No dating,” Nico stated as he stood in front of Luke. Some of the other guys nearby had to stop themselves from laughing. This was a problem Nico hadn’t addressed with other teammates. They were guessing that Nico didn’t have a problem with any of them until he saw Luke and you talking. Nico was not letting his sister date a Hughes boy.

When the team returned for the next season, Luke was sure he did not have feelings for his captain’s sister. But then he saw you for the first time after the off-season, and he felt like he couldn’t breathe. You took away his breath. Shit, he thought, he likes his captain’s sister.

During training camp, you seemed to be everywhere Luke looked. Watching practice, at team dinners, and in the media room watching. Luke couldn’t shake his crush on you if you were everywhere. At a dinner, hosted by you and Nico, he found you in the kitchen of the apartment, mixing up the salad. “Did you have a good summer Luke?” you asked him.

Luke forgot how to speak, “Oh! Yeah, I had fun. Lots of training with my brothers and on the boat. What about you?” He helped you carry some food over to the table full of different foods. “It was good! Switzerland is nice to visit in the summer.”

After that, Luke and you began hanging out more. Luke and you were both pretty shy and got flustered easily around one another. You were falling for Luke every day. Luke finally got the confidence to ask Nico for permission to date you. Luke was hoping that Nico would change his mind about allowing you to date him. “Can I ask your sister out?” Luke questioned Nico after practice one morning.

Nico barked out a laugh. “No,” Nico said, laughing while shaking his head. Luke was defeated. It hurt. It hurt even more that you didn’t know that Nico had warded off Luke from asking you out. Luke wasn’t just going to go behind Nico’s back to ask to date you.

The feelings were evident to you and Luke. There were multiple moments of almost kissing one another, but Luke always was pulling away or making excuses for needing to suddenly leave. It didn’t make sense. You knew Luke liked you and openly flirted with you, in your opinion.

You two had been watching a movie in Luke’s bedroom. Luke and Jack lived a floor above you and Nico. You don’t remember what Luke commented on when you looked at him to laugh, but suddenly you felt both of you leaning in before Luke came to his senses. Luke pulled away and stood from the bed.

“Why do you always do that?” you blurted. “You always pull away before we kiss, and I think we like one another, but you never kiss me!”

“I promised Nico,” Luke mumbled. “Nico asked me not to date you. I’ve been trying so hard to respect his wishes.”

You felt a bit embarrassed to have been rejected by the guy you liked. You gathered your coat and shoes. “(Y/N), wait, I’m sorry. I do like you. I just can’t date you,” Luke attempted to elaborate. Luke couldn’t get you to stay. You were stomping down to your apartment downstairs.

Slamming the door of the apartment, Nico flinched as you stomped into the apartment. “What’s wrong?” Nico asked, seeing the angry look on your face. “Do you have to try and ruin everything in my life? Stay the hell out of my love life next time!” you shouted, storming off to your bedroom and slamming your door shut.

Nico tried to talk to you throughout the night, leaving dinner for you in the microwave. You didn’t leave your room until you were sure Nico was asleep. When Nico woke up for practice the next day, he waited to see if you would attend practice with him. But you never left your room.

Your brother practically corners Luke at practice. “What did you do?” Luke feels sick to his stomach. “I had to reject her because we almost kissed. I was just trying to follow what you said. No dating, remember?” Luke was sure you hated him when he realized you weren’t at the rink.

Nico felt like a jerk for the rest of practice, and even more so when he was going home. Your mom called, asking her son why you had a sudden interest in moving home. Panicking, Nico sped home, finding you in your room with a suitcase.

“Is this because of Luke?” Nico asked. You jumped at the sound of your brother’s voice. He had been standing in your doorway. You had just come out of the bathroom after washing your face since you had been crying. “It’s because of you and him. I got embarrassingly rejected by the guy I like. And my brother is treating me like some twelve-year-old, telling guys they can’t date me. My whole life, you’ve been protective, and I come here and like someone, and you ruined it! I don’t even think Luke will speak to me again.”

He felt bad and asked you to sit. He tried to ignore your half-packed suitcase as the two of you sat on the end of your bed. “You gotta think about it from my view. If something between Luke and you don’t work out, it affects the team dynamic. I have to lead this team, and there can’t be issues because he broke your heart,” Nico explains. You sighed and nodded.

“You understand me?” Nico asked. You nodded again. “You still want to go home? Or are you going to be okay here?” Nico questioned. “I’ll stay here.” It hurt to stay, knowing that you wouldn’t be able to date Luke. Luke had no idea about the conversation that you and Nico had. But he noticed the cold shoulder you were giving him.

You slowly inserted yourself back into life. Luke had caught wind that you were at the training facility, and he found you sitting in the hallway, waiting for Nico. “Can we talk about it?” Luke asked. “I think it’s better if we don’t. Just forget about our feelings, okay?”

It broke Luke’s heart to hear that, and it broke your heart to say it.

Where Jack find out about them by accident, and Jacks like “You’re my sister, and THIS is what you do to me?”

i’m so happy that u like the au!!🫶

Dawsons the one to break the news to Jack. they’re sitting on his coach, both scrolling on their phones and gossiping with each other.

“crazy how Blake and Nico are dating eh?” Dawson says, his newfie accent thick as he pauses on the newest photo on his instagram feed.

Jack chuckles, “man what are you talking about”. he tosses his phone beside him on the couch and leans back, not believing for a second that his twin would be dating his captain.

“Nico and Blake?” Dawson continues cluelessly. he scrolls through Blake's photos, stopping at a very obvious pic of her and Nico with his silhouette cropped out. Dawson tilts his phone towards Jack.

“you’re fucking lying,” Jack gasps, sitting up from his position and taking hold of Dawsons phone.

“you didn’t know..?” Dawson’s so confused… the relationship between their captain and the Hughes sister was very obvious to everyone near the couple.

Jack shoots up out of his seat and quickly pockets his phone as he rushes out his goodbyes to Dawson.

“you’re my sister and THIS is what you do to me?” Jack shouts, storming into Blake's quiet apartment. she looks up from her book to see a fuming Jack in her entrance way.

“what…. did i do?”

“my captain?? you’re screwing my captain!” he shouts again, tugging on his hair as he walks through her apartment.

when he starts pacing, Blake's anxiety grows.

“i didn’t… i’m not-“

“don’t lie to me,” Jack bites, whipping around to face a shell shocked Blake.

Blake stares at her twin, anxious tears threatening her eyesight as she rushes out an apology. “i’m so sorry Jack. I know it’s wrong but we’re adults and he’s so-“ she gasps, “he’s so sweet and-“ she gasps again, tears winning their battle and steaming down her face.

“don’t cry about it” Jack scuffs, and as much as he doesn’t want to admit it in this moment Blake being upset always made him upset. he walks over to his sister, sitting quietly on the floor in front of her spot on the couch. he stares straight ahead, stewing in his own upset while also letting Blake know that they’re going to work it out.

truly though, this was so damn annoying for Jack. out of everyone, her sister would choose his captain? he sighed.

“i’m sorry” Blake whispers again, nudging Jack's shoulder with her fist.

“it’s whatever” Jack sighs, all of his energy being drained from his earlier outburst.

the twins sit in silence for a while, before Jack starts up again.

“oh my god is that why you have his jersey sitting in your closet?” he gasps, turning to face his sister.

“how do you know about that!”

Jack blinks at her, “you force me to bring you sweaters when you’re cold, what are you talking about?”

“okay well-“

“oh my god!” he continues. “that’s why you were fuming that night of the wag party… you were jealous that he was talking to somebody else!”

“okay i’m happy that you kind of moved on from your anger but we really don’t have to go through all-“

“BROO!!! that’s why Nico was asking me about your favourite things??? he said he just wanted to know your coffee order to make you feel better but he liked you!” Jack gasps, shifting himself so that he was laying on the floor and staring up at the ceiling.

Blake blushes at Jacks retelling. “Nicos so sweet,”

“ugh,” Jack groans loudly and dramatically. he thrashes around on the ground, before settling and staring up at his sister. “don’t say any of that shit to me,”

“I thought you were cool with us now!” Blake protests.

“no,” Jack states. “after that comment i take it all back”

“that was innocent though?” Blake laughs at Jack's struggle. he looked like he was in pain.

before Jack has the chance to say anything, Blake’s phone rings and she happily answers. she puts it on speaker and Nicos voice blares through the phone loud and clear. “hey babe!”

“UGH,” Jack groans.

“Jack?” Nico is immediately panicking thinking that he’d just blown their cover.

“he knows,” Blake responds for Jack, who hides his face in his hands.

“this is disgusting” Jack mutters.

“you told him?” Nico asks, completely bypassing Jack's comment.

“no,” Blake responds before turning to Jack. “wait… how did you find out?”

“Dawson,” Jacks voice is muffled behind his hands.

“Dawson knows?” Nico questions in disbelief.

“I guess we’re not too discreet,” Blake chuckles, causing another loud groan to rip through Jack.

Hockey Fights Cancer: Hughes Brothers Edition

Family values have always been ingrained in the Hughes family.

With Quinn, Jack and Luke drafted in the top 10 during their respective draft years, they’ve always acknowledged that it takes a village to get where they are. Talent is the obvious driver, but it’s also about the support to elevate that talent.

But it hasn't necessarily always been family with the Hughes surname that has influenced them. According to Jack, there’s another surname that “should be added onto the back of my jersey.”

The Sandovals consist of Maeve Sandoval nee Brennan, Miguel Sandoval and Clementine Sandoval. Miguel died in 2015 from pancreatic cancer, and he is who all Hughes brothers are playing for as teams across the league celebrates Hockey Fights Cancer nights starting this week.

“Growing up three streets over from the Sandovals in Toronto was such a prominent childhood memory,” Quinn said. “Every memory I have from that time has them in it.”

Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, the Hughes brothers’ mother, and Maeve played collegiate soccer together at the University of New Hampshire. Maeve met Miguel at UNH, Ellen met Jim Hughes post-grad and the four of them became a unit.

“I still remember meeting Maeve when she was a junior and I was a freshman,” Ellen says. “So outgoing and so skilled. She may have been the first upperclassman to make me feel really welcome.”

Though both couples would have lives that took them to separate places — Ellen and Jim to Florida and New Hampshire and Maeve and Miguel to Massachusetts — they would eventually all meet back in Toronto.

Clementine was the first child born in 1997, followed by Quinn two years later, then Jack and then Luke. As the only girl in the mix, she naturally fell into the older sister role.

“I always forget that I don’t technically have any siblings,” Clementine said. “But these days, whenever people ask, I just say I have three younger brothers. Because it’s true.”

Clementine is currently a second-year resident at New York University Langone Health, focusing on a combined emergency room and pediatric residency. After spending her undergrad and medical school years in California, when she was notified of her placement in March 2023, Jack and Luke immediately asked her to move in with them in Hoboken.

“It was a no brainer,” Jack said. “After being in different states for so long, it felt like it was meant to be. Who gets the chance to live with one of their best friends?”

When Miguel was going through treatment, Clementine had just finished her junior year of high school. Quinn was 15, Jack was 13 and Luke was 11. He died days after Quinn verbally committed to the University of Michigan.

“I was young, but I still remember how positive Miguel was when he must’ve been in so much pain,” Luke said. “He always had a smile on his face and made it to every game of ours he could. I got a hattrick in the last game of mine he came to. I’ll never forget that.”

Miguel couldn’t skate for his life, according to Jim. But that didn’t matter. If he wasn’t at his daughter’s soccer games, he was going to the rink to watch the boys.

“Miguel was known to be vocal in the stands,” Jim said. “Any bad call and he was immediately on his feet. I know he’s upstairs watching every Canucks and Devils game as passionate as ever.”

Last season, Jack and Luke revealed to Amanda Smith, the New Jersey Devils Team Reporter the reason why they chose 43 and 86. April 3 was Miguel’s birthday, and Miguel always said that Jack’s “bright and bold” personality was as loud as both of his brothers combined.

“I often think about how [Miguel] never got to see us play in the NHL or for our country,” Quinn said. “Which is so unfair in so many ways, because he always believed in us and was such a loud cheerleader. There are days when I just get sad and I wish he was still here, but then I give Maeve or Clem a call and then it’s usually okay.”

Jack said that Clementine has always been the bright spot amongst the emptiness left by Miguel’s death.

“It puts things into perspective, the way Clee has lived her life beautifully and the way she thinks so positively,” Jack said. “I’ve always seen her as an older sister, but she’s also just one of the best people in the world. Miguel’s energy lives through her.”

“Having Clemmy in our life has been such a blessing,” Luke added. “She’s taught me so much and always looked out for me. I know the three of us try our best to look after her as well.”

Luke still remembers one specific moment during his draft — Clementine and Maeve made it to all three boys’ big days. The morning of, Clementine pulled him aside and gave him an envelope. Immediately, Luke knew what was inside. Quinn and Jack had gotten theirs during their drafts.

A letter addressed to Luke from Miguel. Written two months before he died.

“Dad gave those letters to me to give to them and was very specific about his instructions,” Clementine added. “‘Honey, pull them aside on their draft day, and just give it to them without any context. Only for their own eyes to read.’ I remember being like, how do you know they’re gonna get drafted? And he was like, ‘I just know.’”

All three of them still have their respective letters. Ellen and Jim have theirs as well — Maeve gave them theirs on Quinn’s draft day. Letters were a Miguel staple, according to Clementine. She herself got one when she graduated college and probably will get one when she gets married.

“I can’t imagine the amount of courage and strength that took him,” Quinn said. “Knowing that he wasn’t going to be there for such big moments and writing something anyways. I carry mine with me on every road trip.”

Next week, when the Devils host their Hockey Fights Cancer Night during their home game against the Canucks, the Hughes brothers will be playing for Miguel. Clementine, Ellen and Jim will be in the stands while Maeve — an elementary school teacher — will be watching from Boston.

“We’ll for sure be thinking of him that night, but whenever we step onto the ice, 43 or 86 on our back, we always think of him,” Jack said. “I hope we’re making him proud.”
