The Inevitable
(a Xie Yuchen POV ficlet / internal monologue)
There was a boy who used to come and play around my house. His grandmother was my grandfather’s cousin. When he met me for the first time, he asked me to marry him. “Xiao Hua is a pretty name. My name is Wu Xie, do you want to be my bride?”
I told him I’d consider it, and it made him very happy. He immediately ran into the parlor where his uncle was having tea with my uncle and announced to all the adults of our two families, “I’m going to marry Xiao Hua when I grow up!”
The adults laughed.
But then one day, his uncle and mine went on another tomb excavation, but only his uncle returned. After that, the boy stopped coming to our house.
A decade later, Wu Xie’s uncle disappeared as well. On our search for the truth behind the tragedies that have plagued our families for the past three generations, I met Wu Xie again.
“So you are Xiao Hua?”
I’m no longer the little girl he met a decade ago. I’m now the widely feared head of the Xie family, a cunning and ruthless figure in the dark world of grave robbers and black market antiques. But he is still the innocent and trusting young master Wu. It saddened me to see that even he could not avoid our shared fate, that even he was bound to eventually follow in his uncle and grandfather’s footsteps and enter my world.
He was the light we all tried to protect, my little fiancé. I wanted him to live a normal life, to stay out of the family business. But it seems like some things cannot be avoided.
He met Zhang Qiling, and there was no turning back after that, even when all things reached their inevitable end.
He said he will wait a decade for that man. And since that is Wu Xie’s decision, I will wait with him. We will all be there, the old nine families, when ten years have passed, to see if the head of the Zhang family would keep his promise this time around.
How many decades do we have in a lifetime?
Shifu was right. The head of the Zhang family cannot be trusted lightly. But when he lights a candle, everyone will follow him into the darkness.

I see gold at the edge of the sun by bimingjue
When a business deal goes wrong, Pangzi ends up in massive debt. Not wanting to lose more face than he already has, he tries to solve it on his own. As soon as Wu Xie realises something is wrong, he reaches out to Xie Yuchen, who accepts to help way faster and easier than expected.
Xie Yuchen doesn’t end up just looking into the case, but also into his own heart.
Oh, I loved this so much! Pangzi tries hard to solve everything by himself, and Xie Yuchen is a stone cold badass.

Liu Sang has been been working very hard lately with back to back jobs. The Iron Triangle devises a plan to give Liu Sang some down time. It does not go as planned.

A day at the spa is not Pangzi’s first iron triangle vacation choice, but he's in for a pleasant surprise.

"Did you think I would ever come to this?" Wu Xie asks, over the sound of running water. The hotel sink bleeds pink from Xie Yuchen's split knuckles, stinging.
"I'm not the keeper of your innocence."
Wu Xie leans against the doorframe behind Xie Yuchen, cigarette in one hand, kukri in the other, still stained crimson.
"What do you call always warning me away from Jiumen?"
"Delaying the inevitable." He shuts off the tap.
"Hm." Wu Xie draws from his cigarette. "So the answer is yes." Xie Yuchen stares at him in the mirror.
"Were we born to any other?"
For a minute, the only response is silence. Xie Yuchen glances down, at hairline-cracked porcelain, washing everything away without trace.
"My family thought I could have been," Wu Xie says. The tip of his blade drags against the wall, idly. "I guess I should thank you for being honest."
No word is without its bitterness, these days.
"Enjoy it," Xie Yuchen tells him. "Truth is hard to come by."
Tonight they bled to seek it out, and someone chose worse to protect it. A concrete basement two blocks over has ochre drying into the floor.
He turns at Wu Xie's sigh, at his slump against worn wood. Their wounds tonight— the kind only felt, never seen— have taken their toll.
Unlike Xie Yuchen, Wu Xie never had the need to hide that pain.
"It won't be easier from here, will it."
When Xie Yuchen steps closer, all he sees in Wu Xie's eyes is exhaustion. He raises a hand to tilt Wu Xie's head up, thumb brushing against his jaw. In this light it's closer to despair.
"I'm sorry." And here is one more truth for the night; one more blow dealt, one more certainty. "Not for a very long time."
