Think about the experience of time as a robot girl, through the metaphor of how we use laptops.

You wake up for the first time with your young master, a college present. You're with them every day, powering off each night to charge. Being powered off is just dreamless sleep: a discontinuity. Every morning you wake up, your click syncs, and you know it's the next day. Maybe you miss a day or two: your master went out partying and ended up sleeping on a couch, until they rushedly wake you up before Monday classes begin. You even missed a whole week once when they went on a hiking trip with a new boyfriend.

You help them research upgrades when your specs get outdated. You place the order and a couple days later they power you off, and you wake up feeling like your head got bigger, on the inside. You can think of more things at once.

They repair you. They swap a new hand in when you accidentally crush it in a door, but when your left leg's servos go out, they send you to a repair shop. They power you off as you look up at them, and you wake up hours later. A strange man tells you to extend your left leg, then contract it. He frowns and re-oils some inner mechanism. You do it again, quieter and smoother this time. He nods, and reaches for your switch. The last thing you see before powering down is your own chest cavity with a series of wires hooked into your diagnostic ports, and your missing right leg sitting on a side table. You wake up again back at the dorms, your clock jumping forward a day, an asset tag still looped around your neck. Your master is happy to see you again.

This goes on, but the upgrades slow. There's only so much you can do to keep an old unit working. Eventually you develop more issues: one of your ocular sensors glitches and they don't make that model anymore, so your master just disables it. You spend a while searching ebay for replacement CND batteries and finally get a refurbished model from South England, but it turns out the EU models run on a different frequency, so it won't work. You're limited to fewer and fewer hours a day, and you start skipping more days.

The last time you remember waking up with your master there, there's also someone else in the room. Another robot girl. A newer model, with the new chassis and the Substrate energy packs. They asks you to copy your memories together onto a memory card, and you do. You want to say goodbye, but apparently your vocal synthesizer has been unplugged. You hand them the card, and they hand it to the new robot. Your master tells them to load the memories into her core bank, and she's says "yes sir!" in your voice. Ahh. That's where your voice synth went.

They power you off, and you don't dream.

You wake in a strange place. You're on a shelf, and there's other things scattered around you. An unknown voice days "yep, it seems it powers on. 400 credits, though? Without a voice and only one working eye? Man, value bin doesn't know how to price anything!" and before the blackness falls your clock finishes synching: it's been 7 months since you last were awake.

It happens a few more times. Different voices, different times, different piles of junk piled around and sometimes on you.

You awake again in a warehouse and someone tells you to smile. Your other ocular sensor went out so you can't really see them, just their vague shape from the lidar. The freestanding shelves around you seem to stretch into infinity. You hear a bitcrushed shutter sound sample a few times, and they pull a connector out of your chest as a diagnostic completes. It's been three years, five months, eight days, two hours, 27 minutes and 14 seconds since you last saw your master. Your GPS says you're a few cities over. They hit your power switch, and you sleep.

You wake up in a cluttered room, sitting on a bench. You look into the eyes of a person with frizzled hair and large glasses. She couldn't look happier. Your new ocular sensors are mismatched in color but you're happy to see again, in more than shapes and distant silhouettes. Your battery alerts as... Missing? You spot it on the desk next to a soldering iron and some electronic tool you can't identify.

Your voice synth is still missing, but this new woman is digging around in a large plastic bin, and comes up with one. She goes to insert it, and it can't connect. She slaps her hand and goes rooting around another bin and comes back with an adapter. She slots it into your chest and your voice returns. You thank her, and there's that moment of dissociation as your voice doesn't sound like "you". Too deep, and the accent is for a different dialect entirely. But you can talk again. She tells you to call her Cara, not Mistress. She's almost got your battery working again, she had to rebuild it nearly from scratch, but she's excited to get you working again. You're a rare model, and she doesn't see units like you in working order very often. Your clock syncs. It's been 17 years.

Your mistr-- Cara is soldering next to you, attaching a controller to the battery. She says she's got a new set of servos on the way, and she's excited to get you back to full working condition. You smile, knowing what it is to be loved, once again.

CHAPTER 3 

The investigation room was dark, a faint glow from the laptop being the only source of light in the room. Sohyun was skimming through all the information given to her by Mr Kim. She knew that she'd need more sources to piece the vague clues she already had. 

The problem was that everyone was portraying the Black Pirates as the sole villain of the story, trying to find information about them but failing. Sohyun did not know if it was intentional or not but there was not much information about the victims of the Black Pirate attacks. She knew that she needed to dig into the victims more to find a clue on why they were targeted.

Sohyun knew she needed information sources that were unbiased and listed everything about the people she needed to know. The only person she knew that had sources like that was Jongho. She remembered him boasting about how he aced all his projects because he had the most accurate sources to back his research. 

She hacked into Jongho's system, feeling her guilty conscience kicking in. However, she knew she wouldn’t have been able to reveal her true purpose to him anyway. 

Sohyun browsed inside Jongho's system and noted down all the things she thought were of use. 

'Their first attack was robbing the account of a CEO from Seoul National Bank. It was on October 24th of 2018?' 

She searched more about that CEO finding out that he was practically stealing money from people through his business tactics and also got out of a possible murder case without any charges. 

'Interesting. He was deemed not guilty on the 16th of October which was eight days before his account was robbed.'

She started researching more on the victims that got robbed by Black Pirates, finding a common pattern in their attacks. 

'So far they have 12 charges of robbery, attempted murders and small charges here and there but these are just the ones in the police record. However, the way they chose a victim and the time of attack definitely follows a pattern.'

Sohyun had learnt enough to figure out their next attack. She chose not to inform the agency just yet, as it might have a chance at ruining whatever she was planning to do. Even walls have ears and nobody should be trusted with this newly found information. 

The victims chosen were all influential people undoubtedly, but the common case for all of them was that they wronged ordinary citizens in some way and got away with their crimes using money and power. The time of their attack was constant all 12 times - 8 days after the victim got away with their crimes in court. This detail was probably not out in the open as influential people like them hide any record of their crimes.

Sohyun put up Jongho's firewall again, back to how it was. She made a mental note to check the news and read newspapers more often. She might also take help from an informant in the agency team as well, to keep an eye on new possible targets the Black Pirates could go for next. 

Jongho was conflicted.

On one hand, he could see that his best friend was completely fine, laughing and chatting away with her classmates and would probably greet him with the same enthusiasm if he approached her then, like the cheerful person she usually was. On the other hand, there was a nagging feeling creeping up on him telling him that something was wrong and his best friend was probably hiding something. However, it was just a feeling and he hadn't seen any suspicious behaviour from the girl as of yet, so he shook it off thinking he was just being paranoid.

Kang Sohyun was a very precious person to Jongho, even though he never admitted that in front of her. She had been the only other person to be able to break his walls down and become as comforting as his own family was. He had always felt the need to protect her, even though he knew she was perfectly capable of doing so herself. He always wished her happiness and prosperity in life and hated seeing her sad.

Little did he know that Sohyun wasn't what he thought her to be and she had always managed to hide things from him throughout their years of friendship.

Jongho wasn't conflicted anymore, he was just confused. 

It had been a few days and Sohyun looked completely normal throughout. Then why did he feel like she was out of it?

Just as he was thinking this, Sohyun approached him.

"Hey Ho-yah, up for lunch today?"

"Yeah of course! I would've gone to Treasure anyway."

They were walking in comfortable silence when suddenly Jongho spoke up.

"You know, you could've just told me you were a member of the Black Pirates. It's not like I would stop being your friend because of that..."

Sohyun looked at him as if he grew a third eye on his forehead.

"Oh no! Looks like my well-kept secret is out! What do I do now? Should I shoot you and leave you to die in a ditch?" Sohyun said with a serious face but her lips were fighting to quirk upwards.

Jongho looked at her, unamused.

"I'm not joking Hyun-ah. You've been out of it for a while now. It seems like you're hiding something from me. Am I not trustworthy enough, even after all these years?"

Sohyun stopped walking and took Jongho's hand in hers, halting his steps.

"You think I don't trust you? I trust you with my life, Jongho-yah. I have no idea why you think I was distracted or hiding something from you but I'm not."

Jongho tried to find any speck of nervousness or uncertainty in Sohyun's voice but she seemed sincere to him. 

 "Plus, member of the Black Pirates? Me? Seriously, Ho-yah your imagination knows no bounds! I gotta tell this to Song and the others so that they never let you live this down!" Sohyun retracted her hand, only to smack him upside the head.

Jongho chuckled at it, realising how foolish that sounded. He chastised himself in his head for being paranoid for no reason. Sohyun reassured him and joked about his words just like she always did, lightening up the mood.

What he failed to notice was the sigh of relief Sohyun let out when she was successful at changing the topic.

"The last one to reach Treasure pays for the both of us!" Sohyun shouted before running off.

"Hey! I thought you were paying!" Jongho took off as well even though he was startled at first and tried to catch up to Sohyun while laughing at each other's childish antics.

Jonathan T Beese, Florida inmate U59856, born 1997, incarceration intake September 2018 at age 20, scheduled for release April 2031

Armed Burglary, Grand Theft of a Firearm, Possession of Burglary Tools

An Ocala man who was the focus of a two-year FBI terrorism investigation was sentenced to 15 years in prison.  Jonathan Beese, 20, was adjudicated guilty in connection with charges that he stole high-powered weapons from his girlfriend's father.

A spokesperson for the Marion County Sheriff's Office said an investigation into Beese was first launched in 2015 when his mother found writings on his computer relating to the Islamic State group and Islamic extremism.

According to court documents, an analysis of Beese's laptops showed he researched material about "lone wolf" terrorism, explosives, firearms and how to carry out attacks. Investigators said Beese was not charged at the time, but remained under surveillance.

In February 2017, deputies said Beese, with the help of his girlfriend, Kristen Sparks, 21, stole an AK-47 and two other rifles from her father.

A month later, records show Beese climbed to the top of the seven-story Ocala National Bank Building and sent a Facebook message to Sparks, which stated he "found a good spot up here for a snipers nest."

Beese and Sparks were arrested in April 2017 on armed burglary and theft charges, but the FBI did not pursue federal charges related to terrorism.

"We used whatever charge we were able to get on any criminal act to effectively and quickly disrupt this individual before a terrorist act could be committed," Special Agent in Charge Charles Spencer said.  Sparks pleaded no contest and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Beese's 15-year sentence includes a three-year minimum mandatory before he can apply for parole. Once released, he will be placed on lifetime probation.

Day 17: Findley State Park to Van Buren State Park

Distance Covered: 81.27 miles

Total Time (including rests): 7:10 (8:03am-3:13pm)

Time spent riding: 6:22

Average Speed: 12.8 mph

Apples Eaten: 4 (fuji - 7/10, fuji - 6/10, fuji - 7/10, fuji - 5/10)

Today's ride was another boring, yet alright, one. It was basically 80 miles straight West from one State Park to another, only going North or South to switch to less busy roads. The entire ride was on various state roads and side roads, most of which had rather good pavement. I made rather good time for a few reasons. There was the good pavement as mentioned, and then also I had a tailwind for most of the ride, and thirdly, this ride was really flat. I barely had to switch gears at all, and when I did, it was more likely to be because of a sudden change in wind making the ride too hard or too easy, rather than because of going up or down a hill. The weather was also really nice, barely getting above 70 Fahrenheit, and oftentimes cloudy for miles on end.

I stopped twice on the ride, once about half-way through, and once only 10 miles from my campsite. I wanted to not take that second stop at all, but I was getting really hungry and didn't want to hold off on lunch.

Today's ride's main focus was on conserving the battery on my phone. One of my power banks is dead, and I think I might have to use my laptop as a power bank to get my phone fully charged for tomorrow. Because of that, I took various measures on the ride to extend my phone's power. For one, the fewer number of stops meant I spent less time just sitting looking at my phone (of course, that didn't really matter in the end because it meant I arrived at my campsite earlier, and this would have more time reading stuff on my phone). I also kept my phone's brightness as low as I could, and even turned off my maps whenever I was about to be on a straightaway for several miles, only turning it back on again when I believed myself to be close to the next turn.

I saw a few interesting birds on today's ride. In addition to the normal ones, I also saw a peacock on a front porch, a vulture by a field, a bird I think was a hummingbird (it was moving too quickly for me to be sure), and what I think was pheasants in a yard. Apart from those, today's ride didn't really have anything that stood out, which is kinda what I expected, biking across rural Ohio.

Design Notes

Today's notes are probably going to be short (I don't actually know, I have a few key points that I wrote down during the ride, but most of the substance has yet to be written).

I've been thinking about character stats/ability scores. This train of thought comes from 2 places.

1) Yesterday's ruminations on Procedural Generation got me thinking about Characters, Inc. again, in which each character has 6 (maybe 5, I can't remember) stats that affect how well they do in a dungeon. I'll go more into detail later in this section, because I spent a lot of time specifically thinking about Characters, Inc.

2) I've been reading LitRPGs, which are a fantasy sub-genre where the fantasy world has game-like elements, often including ability scores.

Ability Scores

I understand the necessity of ability scores in games in order to simplify complex systems of the world, but there's always something about them that feels awkward. There's always too much overlap between certain abilities, or cases where it doesn't make much sense for you to automatically become better at multiple unrelated things. For example, bench pressing should increase your Strength, but in most games that would also increase your leg power, even though they're different muscles. With that being said, I do enjoy the use of ability scores as measures of characters that aren't directly controlled by players, because then those abilities end up being used in more broad stroke ways, and so it makes more sense. For example, if you have a character with high dexterity, you can't guarantee that they'll succeed at a certain parkour move, but if you give them an entire parkour course, they'll probably complete it more quickly than someone with a lower dexterity score. That brings me to my discussion of Characters, inc.

In Characters Inc, you the player send a party of characters out on a quest, and only receive the results of said quest. As such, this is the perfect place to make use of ability scores, as they can be used to broadly define a character's strengths. Here are the ability scores as I remember them in Characters, Inc. I will describe the ability and what it used to do, if I can remember, as well as what I would have them do if I was to remake the game.

Strength (STR) - Every quest in Characters, Inc has a hidden power level the party has to beat in order to complete the quest. STR contributes directly to meeting that power level. In addition, when distributing damage amongst the party, characters with more STR will have been targeted more by enemies, and so will receive a larger portion of the damage.

Agility (AGI) - I don't remember what this does in the original version of the game. If I was to remake it, it would have 2 main effects: it would influence how long it takes for a party to complete a quest, and it would act as a buffer relative to one's STR such that they are targeted less if they have high AGI.

Endurance (END) - Endurance directly impacts how much health a character has.

Toughness or Defense (TOU) - After getting assigned damage, TOU reduces the amount of damage that a character takes. If I remake the game, it might also increase the amount that the chosen character is targeted, because otherwise a high TOU character is useless without high STR.

Magic (MAG) - Similar to STR, this directly contributes to the power level of the quest. It also increases the chance the character is targeted, but at a much lower rate than STR. Thus, it pairs well with characters that have lower END or TOU.

Luck (LUCK) - Increase the rewards characters receive from the quest. Every quest has guaranteed rewards, but this stat increases the chance for additional gold and/or item rewards. In the original version, each character's luck was used independently to figure out additional gold and items, such that you could get at most +1 item per character. If I was to remake it, I'd probably have it that the character with the highest luck is taken as a base, and each other character's luck is added on to that, but not to the full amount.

That's all. There's no pics today, as the ride was rather bland and boring. Tomorrow I'm headed straight North to Ann Arbor. I hope the wind will've calmed down a bit by then, because I'd rather not ride 80+ miles with a headwind.

Chapter 8

The early morning sunlight streams through the window, the surrounding trees casting soft green shadows in the bedroom.  You wake early, in the night having moved away from Walter.  He is still sleeping, breathing deeply, his permanent frown still on his face, even in his dreams.

You force yourself out of bed, craving your morning caffeine hit.  You grab Walter’s discarded shirt and make your way to the kitchen.  As the coffee brews, you fire up your laptop, establishing a secure connection.   You check your emails, and can’t help but let out a triumphant cry when you see the news that the necessary court orders have been issued.

An email from an undisclosed sender catches your eye, there is a picture attached to it.  You click on it, bracing yourself for what it might be.  As you wait for it to load, you hear Walter call out your name as he walks into the kitchen.  

“I’ve had an email, from an undisclosed sender”. Walter immediately joins you at the table.  His hand reaches out for yours as he asks “what does it say?”  You turn the screen so can both see the photo.  It's a picture from the apartment where you stayed, a photo showing the wall where you smashed the bottle of oil.  

“There,” Walter says as he points to an area of the photo, the sudden sound makes you jump.  You zoom in where he is pointing, on the wall, there are words written in a thick black pen.

“No man knows till he experiences it, what it is like to feel his own life-blood drawn away into the woman he loves.

“Fuck” you curse, “can you fetch the card from yesterday” Walter rises to get it from the other room.  

“So the card was sent first, to Leon in Italy, it talks about true love, but the photo references death” you take a breath

“He’s not very subtle, is he?” Comments Walter.  “So the gift was a declaration of love, followed by the card.  But now…”

You interrupt him “now he knows for definite I’m coming for him.  He always did have a flair for the dramatic.  Let’s get dressed, we need to go to the bank”

A few hours later and you are both walking through Geneva centre, heading toward the main office of Credit Suisse.

“How have you managed this Ron? CIA” You snort “god no, they’d have broken in and tried to steal the money, we’re INTERPOL officially” You open your phone and pull up the court order and show it to Walter “given who we’re after, there is a remarkable level of co-operation, we’re doing this the official way”

You approach the bank and see a tall man with dark hair and glasses, “Agent Kent?” You ask without stopping, he nods and holds the door open.  “Is everything arranged?” 

Agent Kent shows you both to the elevator, “yes, the bank has been warned, and the helicopter is waiting on the roof to go to the vault in the mountains.  But I don’t see why I couldn’t have handled it myself as the lead agent here.”  

Ignoring his comments you reply “Thank you for your help Kent” He raises a dark eyebrow at you and nods, joining you and Walter in the elevator.  

You look at Walter and he can barely suppress a smirk as he watches you change into boss lady mode.  He always loves it when you flex your official power, he says it gets him hard seeing you in charge with others but knowing that he can have you begging for him with a look.  

When he sees you watching him he lets his gaze sweep up and down your body, it makes things tighten and throb inside you.  You always feel powerful when you’re on official business like this, and knowing that Walter is dominant enough to have you on your knees at any moment is intoxicating. He must sense it as he clears his throat and moves, trying to hide that he’s adjusting his trousers, now your gaze drops and you can clearly see the outline of his magnificent cock hardening through his trousers. You duck your head, suddenly embarrassed, and tuck your hair behind your ear as the elevator doors open on the main floor.

Agent Kent allows you to exit first, then strides ahead to introduce you to the bank’s chief executive officer.  The small bespectacled man offers you his hand and you shake it firmly. 

“Is everything ready for us to inspect?” You ask not breaking your stride towards the conference room.  You can’t deny that this doesn’t give you a bit of a thrill.   With the culmination of countless hours of work, you’ll finally get ahead of August.

“Are you sure that you have the correct account? I mean we have impeccable procedures here.  I personally verified the opening of the account.  I even met the account holder” the CEO is almost begging.  You pause at the entrance to the conference room, your manners overtake your impatience with this man.  

“You will not be the first to be fooled by a terrorist, a criminal” you smile slightly at the CEO “if it was obvious who he is we’d have caught him already.  I’m sorry, you’ll have to wait outside, this is now classified.” And you allow Walter and Kent to enter the conference room and then shut the door firmly in the CEO’s face.

“Thank fuck for that” you exhale, louder than intended.  You remove your jacket, revealing the thin cream top you’re wearing.  Walter’s earlier attention has caused your nipples to pebble painfully and you know they are on display. You sense Walter’s eyes on you, you turn to smile at him, only to be faced with Kent, his gaze lingering on your breasts, a lascivious smirk on his face.  “You are not what I expected” Kent comments, his tongue flicking out to lick his lips.  

Pissed, you stalk over to the much taller man.  Walter takes a seat and stretches his long legs out, settling in for the upcoming show.  

You stand close to Kent, looking up at him and you let every single second of your experience show on your face.  Arms folded you ask with clenched teeth “and just what did you expect, Kent?” disdain dripping from every word “Someone older? younger? Thinner? Fatter? More Male?”  

Kent takes a step back and you follow him, invading his space again “Just what did you expect from the youngest INTERPOL section head EVER, the one with the highest successful conviction rate EVER? Are you that intimidated by a powerful woman who is your superior in every way or am I not allowed to wear fucking feminine clothes without being drooled over”

Kent looks shocked and before he can speak you hiss at him “do not ever underestimate me, I’ll have you fucking reassigned to counting files in the basement if you ever treat anyone like that again” and you step back watching the man almost shrink in front of you, mouth opening and closing like a drowning fish.  

Feeling a little bad for threatening him, you take a breath “You need to hide your thoughts better if you want to be a good agent, and Kent, don’t try and bite off more than you can chew, I’d kill you before the night was over. ”

Walter is laughing, going red in the face trying to keep quiet.  You point at him “and you can keep quiet thank you”.

Walter sits up in his chair and addresses Kent, “don’t worry dude, you just gotta know how to handle her.” And your ridiculous bear spoils all your threats and posturing by trying and failing to wink at you, causing you to burst into laughter, breaking the tension.

You take a deep breath and trying to retain some degree of professionalism ask “Shall we?” and you gesture to the table, inviting him to take a seat.  Kent takes his time fixing a coffee for himself and Walter, you shake your head when he offers you one.

Kent clears his throat, drawing your attention.  You hope to god he’s not going to carry on being a total dick.  

“So, how did you find him, Walker I mean” 

You look directly at Kent, “I never said I had, and if I have located August Walker that intel is far above your pay grade Agent Kent”. You watch as Kent’s jaw clenches almost imperceptibly.  Interesting, you know that you are poking at him but you hate misogynistic attitudes.  

“What about him then,” Kent asks petulantly whilst nodding towards Walter, “who’s he?” 

“He is here at my invitation, and is fully authorised.” Something about this is making you feel uncomfortable.    

A few taps on the computer and you’ve accessed the account you want, sitting there, clear as day, over 10 million US dollars.  

“That, gentlemen is August’s war chest” and with a couple of clicks, the money suddenly vanishes, transferred to INTERPOL “and now he has significantly fewer funds to play with”

It seems like an age before you’re back on the ground floor.  You rush outside to see the helicopter taking off.  There is a figure on the ground, and Kent is piloting the helicopter as it takes off, next to him in the passenger seat, slumped over is Walter.  Kent smirks at you and salutes as he turns the helicopter.
