A 1960s shot of Karachi’s famous Hotel Metropole that was famous for its night clubs and bars. The hotel today is being torn down and turned into a shopping and office complex. Half of it has already been turned into a ‘wedding garden.’ Behind it was the Palace Cinema that was extremely popular with college and university students. The cinema was torn down in the 1980s and has since been operating as a ‘marriage hall.’

Dear God,

Thankful and blessed today. All is well for we arrived in the Philippines safely. We rode Cebu pacific. Our flight had an emergency landing at Karachi airport due to medical issue of one passenger. I slept and woke up to eat the free nissin noodle cup given by the crew. Thank God for we arrived safely even though its late. Mama and Papa was assisted by the airport crew using wheel chair. We took a lot of time at the immigration and baggage claim. Thank God it finished well. We rode a grab car inova going to Oyo Sangco hotel. We arrived safely even though it was traffic. Papa accompanied me to buy barbecue like chicken isaw, pork meat, chicken gizzard, kwek kwek. We also bought water at 7 eleven. We ate our dinner which is Wendy’s fried chicken given by the Cebu Pacific. We ate a lot of dinner. We also bought adapter for charging. I had my self and skin care routine. I scrolled my social media accounts, chatted my family and friends. I played cooking fever. I had little chit chats with mama. I read few pages of the Bible. I drank my medicines. Have mercy on us Oh God. Guide us always to the right path. Remove sickness, danger and negative things in our life. Answer our prayers in your perfect time. Thank you and I love you God.

“December is when everybody has an excuse to put a pause on worrying, whatever income level you are,” said Karachi-based communications consultant Khizra Munir.

“Everyone’s on the same page that we’re going to live in the moment. It’s a great time to have a reunion, a great excuse to dress up.”

Weddings are one of the few opportunities for people in the predominantly Muslim country to socialise and party. So it is no surprise that people draw them out a bit.

A typical Pakistani wedding means at least three events, and often more: there is the engagement, the gathering when friends and family apply turmeric paste to the bride’s hands and face in a pre-glam ritual, another party for applying henna to the bride’s hands and feet – which, of course, means more music and dancing. The bride gets a procession. So does the groom.

Then there is the cost of all those parties. A wedding event in an upscale banquet hall can cost upwards of 1 million rupees ($3,576), a hefty price tag in a country with an annual gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of just more than $1,500 and very high inflation. A wealthier family could easily spend 10 to 20 million rupees on a party.

Banks offer loans and other wedding financing of up to 3 million rupees. Welfare institutions, including one of the Pakistani government, support people from disadvantaged backgrounds or low-income households to pay for weddings.

But people still look forward to the wedding season, in spite of its demands on the wallet and wardrobe.

By March, Pakistanis start going back to dealing with the warmer weather and everyday woes, including the bills for all those parties.

But for now, it is still Decemberistan.

These nightclubs were frequented by activists, diplomats, politicians, air hostesses and young people.The historic Metropole Hotel in Karachi was also a favoured spot for singing and jazz performances.But in 1973, Pakistan's parliament created a constitution that declared the country an Islamic Republic and Islam as the state religion.Four years later, military leader General Zia ul-Haq overthrew the government of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. What followed in the decade after has been called a "draconian phase" by activists and lawyers as Islamic law was enforced and Pakistani society was drastically altered.By the mid-1980s, General Zia had even resurrected public flogging to show his commitment to Islamic law.Today, the nightclubs and bars are long gone, and the Metropole Hotel looks more like it is in danger of collapsing. Just down the road, a skeletal structure of what was initially supposed to be a casino stands abandoned.

But the yearning for a freer, more tolerant Pakistan has not gone away, and Ms Robin is just one of those pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable and what is not. The graduate of St Patrick's High School and Government College of Commerce and Economics, is adamant that she has done nothing wrong."I'm not breaking any law by representing Pakistan on a global platform. I am doing my bit to quell any stereotypes about it," she said.
