Happy "Max Headroom Incident" Day to all who celebrate.
On November 22, 1987 television signals in Chicago were interrupted twice by an unknown person in a Max Headroom mask.
(Kids, ask your grandparents about Max Headroom)
The first time, WGN Channel 9's 9 PM news was interrupted for about 17 seconds before WGN's engineers got control of their signal back.
The second time, it was WTTW Channel 11's turn. The PBS station's airing of the classic Doctor Who episode The Horror of Fang Rock was interrupted with the clip above.
Those responsible were never caught and has since become a legendary moment in piracy/hacking.

Doctor Who: Horror of Fang Rock (1977) BBC Televison Wri. Terrance Dicks Dir. Paddy Russell
Been watching this wonderful story today. The cliffhanger ending of episode three is very understated and truly chilling.

leela autism evidence in s15e1-4 horror of fang rock bc my and my (autistic) gf spent the whole serial going “sooo me” every time she did anything;
visibly distressed and upset but the loud foghorn sound
strips out of wet clothes the moment she has the chance, willing to wear literally anything else as long as it’s dry
is able to sense temperature differences that are imperceptible to anyone else (including the doctor)
when she gets the chance to pull the foghorn and make the noise herself she literally stands there pulling it over and over and giggling
the doctor tells her to relay instructions with words that are unfamiliar to her, so she walks away repeating the phrase over and over again as not to get it wrong
vince says he’s lonely at the lighthouse so sometimes he talks to the seals. leela immediately tells him that’s stupid
(adding this one at my gfs insistence) the way she picks up the sledgehammer and weighs it in her hands, seeming to find the heaviness/balance of it satisfying
when a woman screams next to her she turns around and slaps her in the face (soooo me. literally why are you screaming in my ear he’s already dead it doesn’t matter)
when the same woman is crying over people’s deaths and says she should’ve known not to come because her astrologer told her not to, leela “comforts” her by telling her that magic is stupid and she should believe in science instead

For those of you who love classic Dr Who with Tom baker, this is one of the best loved stories 'Horror of Fang rock', it's set in a Victorian lighthouse with a very small cast, my old mate Annette Woollett plays the annoyingly screamy Adelaide Lessage who screams once to often and gets a short sharp smack across the chops from Leela (Louise Jameson) Annette has recently finished filming an interview for the forthcoming blu-ray release extras..
Artists Oliver Arkinstall-Jones has recently created new posters for many old episodes basing them on old X-rated horror films of the day, got mine signed by Annette...

Build a Doctor Who episode:
Until now we have a horror/ creepy episode set in the far future, in an alien town/city.
The Tardis landed there on her own, the Doctor wasn't even trying to take off.
The villains will be something seen in Classic Who but not New Who.
There's gonna be five or less characters with lines, and out of them will survive the Doctor, the companion and one more good guy.
Round 8
Help me choose the villains:
1. The Mara
A snake-like creature/ hive mind that can possess and manipulate people (and trap them in their minds!). It feeds on negative emotions like fear and hatred, targeting those more susceptible to them. Its main goal seems to be spreading chaos and unrest.
Seen in Classic who in “Kinda” and “Snakedance.”
2. The Krynoids
Sentient, carnivorous alien plants. They can influence other plants and even possess humans. They start out as pods, and if you get too close they'll turn you into a Krynoid too. If they take root on a planet, soon all animal life there becomes extinct. Their goal seems to be replacing animal life with plant life/ "winning" against animal life.
Seen in Classic who in “The Seeds of Doom”
3. The Wirrn
A race of human-sized insectoid parasites. They live in space but do occasionally land on planets to gather supplies or breed. They infect and take over the bodies of other creatures, using them as hosts to lay their eggs. The wirrn larvas are equipped with both the host's and its ancestors' knowledge. They also produce a slime that, if touched, turns other creatures into larvas too.
Seen in Classic who in “The Ark in Space”
4. The Rutans
Hive mind. They usually look like green glowing jellyfish, but they can move out of water just fine. Limited vision. They can shape-shift into forms they know very well. They can absorb electricity for sustenance, and use bioelectricity to defend themselves. They can survive mostly anywhere. Also, their ships can control the weather to a certain degree. Known for being the nr 1 enemy of the Sontarens.
Seen in Classic who in “Horror of Fang Rock”

I wish I could make a video clip to do true justice to the dismissive contempt with which Leela says, "They will all die then!"

Doctor Who: Horror of Fang Rock
I rewatched this serial on 16 March 2023, the story that starts the fifteenth season of Doctor Who and first aired in the UK during September 1977.
It begins on a lighthouse at the turn of the twentieth century. It could be an historical drama about the switch from oil to electricity… except a weird fog and a meteorite-like object makes it all not. Then our heroes arrive, lost in the fog on the way to Brighton. One of the three lighthouse keepers is killed by an alien creature just as the Doctor and Leela appear at their door. Of course, one of the surviving keepers is suspicious while the other is happy to make friends off the bat. Soon another group arrive, their ship having crashed on the rocks… and it becomes obvious the alien creature is hunting and killing those trapped in the lighthouse, one-by-one.
There’s lovely touches about the gendered nature of clothing when Leela changes from a sodden frock to far more sensible jumper and trousers. The serial is great at exposing differences in terms of age and class. For all it’s about the Earth being caught up in intergalactic wars it is also about the scourge of gambling and greed.
