I had a professor in college who used to start solving every problem with the same dialogue.
Proff: What’s the first step to solving any problem?
Class: Don’t panic.
Proff: And why is that?
Class: Because we know more than we think we do.
I think about that a lot tbh. It didn’t occur to me until much later that he meant for us to apply that dialogue outside of the classroom to any problem. Because we always know more than we think we do. We are all an amalgam of random information that ends up being relevant with surprising frequency.

Furthermore I am from the South and recently moved up North for family reasons to find to my astonishment and in direct contradiction to what I had always been told that I experience significantly MORE homophobia, transphobia, and racism up here than I ever did back home. Not to mention how poorly I see the local visibly mentally ill population being treated with completely casual tone. No one is even trying to hide it with whispers or euphemism. The North seems just as bad (if not worse) and uses the South as a scapegoat to shift attention away from itself. At least the South has the self awareness to try and fix its problems, but here I am just in a sea of pretentious white people much more bigoted and judgemental than any I’ve ever met before who do nothing but make fun of my accent and see themselves as righteous
yall have got to be more normal about Southern people and I'm not kidding. enough of the Sweet Home Alabama incest jokes, enough of the idea that all Southerners are bigots and rednecks, and enough of the idea that the South has bad food. shut up about "trailer trash" and our accents and our hobbies!
do yall know how fucking nauseating it is to hear people only bring up my state to make jokes about people in poverty and incestuous relationships? how much shame I feel that I wasn't born up north like the Good Queers and Good Leftists with all the Civilised Folk with actual houses instead of small cramped trailers that have paper thin walls that I know won't protect me in a bad enough storm?
do yall know how frustrating it is to be trans in a place that wants to kill you and whenever you bring it up to people they say "well just move out" instead of sympathizing with you or offering help?
do yall understand how alienating it is to see huge masterposts of queer and mental health resources but none of them are in your state because theyre all up north? and nobody seems to want to fix this glaring issue because "they're all hicks anyways"
Southern people deserve better. we deserve to be taken seriously and given a voice in the queer community and the mental health space and leftist talks in general.

today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned dante’s sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, dante’s inferno dante, who died in 1321.
but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.
the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold dante’s exile.
