Hidden mosaics of the lost city of Zeugma

Zeugma, on the Euphrates river (now part of Southern Turkey), flourished under Greek and then Roman rule before it was destroyed in war in the 3rd century AD.

The Santa Amanita illustration features Mi Padrino who was delighted when children would think he was Santa Claus. Antonio’s Hispanic (specifically Cuban) heritage as a Santa Claus figure is extra appropriate to me now living in Nederland where Sinterklaas is traditionally Hispanic, coming by ship from Spain with a bunch of dudes all named Piet aka Pete. This is likely where “Santa’s helpers” in the workshop elf connotation comes from in the States, from Dutch colonists. For centuries Piet, every one of em, was specifically Zwarte aka Black Pete. As far back as I can find this is simply explained as “because they are accompanying Sinterklaas FROM Spain”. Indeed back when the Roman Catholics were spreading their saints around Europe to (rather successfully) eclipse indigenous pagan practices they came up to the Netherlands from Spain with bishops (Sinterklaas is still depicted in red Bishop robes throughout Dutch culture to this day) accompanied by Moorish servants whose own cultural identity had before been the standard the Iberian peninsula. Things have changed, as they always do and shall, and at least here in my current city of Utrecht these days Piet is no longer specifically zwart. Children welcoming Sinter Klaas to town dress as Piet with his signature feathered hat but they do not (brace yourself) paint their faces black as was once customary. No matter where Santa comes from in what culture his common root is with the psychedelic mushroom medicine of the shamanic ancestors of the reindeer revering Sami people. 🍄 I so wish I could share these first hand experiences with Antonio 🎅 and get his insights on these histories and customs with his worldly wisdom and Santeria lens on the spiritual matters in the continual evolution of such rituals. I breathe deeply and listen to the air move through my pulsing body and hear his sweet sing song voice among ancestral vibrations. I know he is delighted that I share my perspectives and his memory with you. Yule blessings from Cuban Santa and his Ahijada 💚

The fact that Judaism is trending because of both the wave of bomb threats on synagogues and Bradley Cooper's Antisemitism Adventure (his huge fake prosthetic nose, and him basically stealing the story from a Jewish man) is so infuriating and so exhaustingly typical.

The fact that I see Judaism trending on Tumblr and immediately think "oh no. Something Bad is happening to us." We're never trending cause it's fucking good. I never get to be excited, it's just cold dread.

The fact that Antisemitism is getting worse everyday and the only ones who ever talk about it are other Jews. The fact that no one else fucking cares. The only ones who support us are other Jews. Even when gentiles talk about Nazis or white supremacists they don't want to help us. We're just their prop, the canary in the coal mine and the perfect victim.

The fact that everyone's uncomfortable with Jews still being here. Reminding them of things they'd rather forget.

The fact that it'd be easier for them if we were all dead. Then they could tell stories about our people, dressed in offensive caricatures, without us making a fuss.
