Vintage Dome

A couple of weeks ago I saw this dome in Hood River, Oregon. Given the flat window panels on the dome itself, being flat rather than gracefully curved and sculpted, I wondered if this was one of the very first dome cars.

After briefly poking around on-line, I felt this was ATSF 501 as the fluting seemed to jibe. To confirm I asked a group of knowledgeable people on Facebook. Alfred Lynch says,

That is definitely a Pullman Standard dome car that was originally part of the Santa Fe 500 class...built for the 1951 Super Chief. Most likely, that is the original number. Those cars contained the famous Turquoise Rooms, a private dining area...designed to be coupled the 600 class diners.

The car is part of equipment owned by the Mount Hood Railroad; the company does both revenue freight and tourist operations.

It ain’t much, but I’ve been thru a wilderness program, this house may not have air con but neither did I for 3 Months. It feels weird that the skills and resilience that Second Nature gave me come so in handy in ways not many people expected, but nonetheless. So many people are averse to heat and to sweat, but, wilderness exposed me to both, every day and ever 78-102 degree night, the Utah dessert and its creature trying to reclaim your body, into the dirt, every night, I loved it, and I will never not want to go back, fuck technology and all that, you don’t have to worry about shit, for 3 months, the world demands nothing of you, nothing but walking and sleeping, being a custodian of your enviroment and it returning the favor, a hole in the ground your toilet, the sand covered rocks your bed, the bugs that parade your body, your friends to talk to late at night. So many whiny little kids complain that they got trauma in the troubled teen industry, no, no, NO. It is NOT traumatizing. Treatment is like an industrial manufacturing machine, from a lathe to a pneumatic hammer, wield it as a tool, and it will be your transcendent benefactor, fear it as a weapon or captor, and ever will it be your unmaking, it is an experience only you have the power to harness and harness I did.

Anyways it’s fuckin hot rn, it’s gonna hit 90 on Wednesday but it’ll be a nice excuse to hit up some hike with my JBL and a Yeti cooler, and chill. HMU if you’re in hood river.
