So according to the adjusted timeline for the Holmes, Watson, and Morstan Consulting Detective Agency (henceforth referred to as the Mary Lives AU), Mary and Watson decide to go on holiday after doing Hound of the Baskervilles (they've also just found out that she's pregnant).

Holmes is left unattended for a little over a week before he decides it would be a great idea to be deathly ill to catch a murderer.

I figure the Watson/Morstan marriage started out as 'you allude to a husband and I'll fill in as necessary', but like making up a boyfriend to your grandparents, that eventually causes complications which I expect would be even more complicated in Victorian England, so eventually...

(One evening in Baker Street)

Holmes (doing chemistry): "If it bothers you that much, talk to her about it."

Watson: "It doesn't bother me, I'm just worried that eventually one of us will slip and we'll end up being caught out."

Holmes: "Which is something you need to discuss with Mary."

Watson: "Oh, alright..."

(The next day, at her flat)

Watson: "Mary, you know I've no issue with posing as your husband in public, but we really do need to get our stories straight."

Mary: "Are you referring to anything in particular?"

Watson: "Well, for instance, naturally I am happy to collect parcels for you, but it has been a little awkward at times."

Mary: "What do you mean?"

Watson (fidgeting): "Uh, well... It is of course fully within your rights to use your own name, but in context..."

Mary: "John, please get to the point, love."

Watson: "Ah, yes-- sorry. What I mean to say is, I am caught rather off guard when I collect parcels for you, since people keep assuming that my name is Mr Morstan."

Mary (cackling): "Oh god, sorry, I didn't think!"

Watson: "I'm not offended or anything like that, just typically with marriage the names go the other way around."

Mary: "No, I know! I just forget. Actually, I've been meaning to talk to you about our Arrangement, because as it is, it's causing some questions on my end."

Watson: "From whom?"

Mary: "Well, friends mostly, they think it's a little odd they've never met you, but more pressingly my landlady is getting suspicious."

Watson: "Ah... then what do you propose?"

Mary: "That was going to be it actually..."

Watson (confused): "It... was...? Sorry, I don't think I understand..."

Mary (taking his hands): "John Watson, will you marry me?"

Holmes: "How did it go?"

Watson: "Mary and I are engaged!"

Holmes: "...I genuinely can't tell if that means the discussion went well or terribly."

It occurs to me that a reimagining where Mary is involved with cases results in Watson being around Holmes wayyyy more than most other Watson Is Married situations, which would mean the cases that have started independent of him require more explanation for why he, and by extension Mary (who gets to live through the entire canon tyvm), are playing catch up.

The one that comes to mind is The Dying Detective, which I can only imagine going like

Watson and Mary: "You know what? A holiday would be nice. Holmes would you like to come?"

Holmes: "No, I'm kind of busy. Have fun in France."

Watson and Mary: "Alright, look after yourself then. We'll send you a postcard :)"

(A week later)

Telegram: 'Holmes is dying.'

Watson and Mary, packing frantically: "...we left the country for a week. How the fuck did he manage--"
