so maybe a year ago I watched the movie weathering with you and I have some conflicting feelings about it. lots of people have been criticising the supposed message of the story as bad because apparently the protagonists let tokyo sink under water for some silly teenage love, and I have a few objections on this reading.
although I have to agree, it is quite silly when you weigh up the costs and benefits. one girl to keep a city from submerging under water. its quite obvious which one someone might logically choose right? yet the film chooses the former. this makes it very easy for someone to brush off weathering with you as a nonsensical feel-good film, but honestly it’s more complex than that. I think that really what Shinkai was aiming for was for the viewer to recognise that hodaka and hina’s motivation was silly, but also for the viewer to question themselves and realise that this practical and profit-orientated perception rather sadistic, similar to how individual people are often forgotten in the grand scheme of the world.
but on the flip side, I also like that Shinkai doesn’t present love as a magical power that fixes everything either, because it doesn't. while hodaka and hina manage to stay together, their choice leaves tokyo to sink under the oceans, but neither does shinkai present this as anything catastrophic. instead, keisuke was shown as much more successful at the close of the film despite the rain, while taki’s grandmother was shown to be quite at peace with the changes.
the film asks the viewer; why must hina be sacrificed? she’d never done anything wrong in her life and except receiving both the blessing and curse of a sunshine girl. it challenges the viewer to question their own mentality, and also kind of criticises the cold and harsh mentality that so many people adopt as they grow older.

The Resolution
Summary: Hodaka says goodbye to his former life for good.
Fandom: Weathering With You/Tenki No Ko
After a quick goodbye to the two girls whom he assumed were making a love confession to him, Hodaka wasted no time returning to his house. When he got inside nobody was there. His mother was out with friends, and his father, who knew where he was. He went straight to his room, took out a pair of suitcases and began emptying each of his drawers. He didn't even notice his father knocking on the doorway.
"You're leaving?" he asked.
"Yes," replied Hodaka without making eye contact. "For good this time."
Mr. Morishima put on a genuine smile.
"Hodaka, I know I haven't been a loving father, but I was only doing what I thought was best for you."
Hodaka shut his suitcase, packing complete and turned to face his father, fixing him with a glare that was as cold and hard as the ones his dad had given him whenever his dad was in a rotten mood.
"If you want what you think is best for me, then listen to what I have to say for once. From this moment, you and Mom shall not see me again. And you will not attempt to find me in Tokyo. In return, I won't even bother coming back here again. Your actions that caused me to run away three years ago will never come to light, and you will get to keep the family honor that you're so proud of. Is that understood?"
"Of course," said Mr. Morishima, knowing his son absolutely meant it. "But what do I tell your mother?"
Hodaka turned away.
"Tell her I’m running away again."
"Are you sure you want to do this, even if you'll have nothing or nobody?"
"I do. But you're wrong. I will have the only thing worth something in this world: a life of my own."
Suddenly, and unexpectedly, Mr. Morishima gave his son a hug, letting him know in his own way, he really loved him.
"You are so precious to me, Hodaka. I just thought that maybe if I had raised you the same way your grandfather raised me, discipline and all, I'd be carrying out a tradition."
Hodaka pulled away.
"Tradition is for the weak, Otosan and the son that was precious to you is long gone."
He held out his right hand, asking for a farewell shake.
"Sayonara."
Shaking hands with his son, their farewell was sealed. Then Hodaka picked up his suitcases, walked out of the door and out of his life, never looking back, not even for one second.
That was the last time Hodaka ever saw them. They carried on without him of course, and Aunt Hiroki and Grandmother Monika often stopped by to lend them some money. But even after his parents died in a car crash in ‘29, Hodaka couldn’t have cared less to attend the funeral. But he did manage to send his parents one last goodbye gift in the form of two blue roses that reminded him of Hina’s eyes. Meanwhile, his aunts, his uncles and his cousins fought over the scraps of his parents’ estate like hyenas.
It had been precisely three years since Hodaka left for Tokyo on Sarubia Maru. There on the quayside, he met the ticket officer, looking almost exactly as he did that year. It seemed the rainy atmosphere was bumming him out.
"Can I take your name please?"
"Hodaka Morishima."
"Thank you."
Huddling in his jacket, Hodaka paid him the money, steered himself up the gangplank and went to find his cabin. Like before, he had booked himself into a second-class cabin. He set his luggage down and sighed, waiting for the boat to blow its whistle. Sure enough, it did. He went outside to the stern and saw the island, his home of a prison disappearing into a distant fog created by the rain and clouds. It looked so beautiful, but beneath its beauty were the horrors that he had suffered through, the many hardships he had to face. Now he had a purpose in the form of Hina, the ring he had given her lying in his coat pocket.
As Kozushima disappeared into the fog, Hodaka thought to himself: Could he exchange one life for another, the same way a caterpillar turned into a butterfly? If an insect could do it, so could he. But was it any more unimaginable, than the ultimate flooding of Tokyo?
Sarubia Maru sailed further and further away, determined to reach its final destination.

❀ My thoughts on Weathering With You.
🌧️ Since watching Weathering With You, the story was not only beautiful but a tab bit sad how it all went down that bringing Hina down back from the sky would risk making the rain last forever without fulfilling her chosen sacrifice as a weather maiden… But, I like to think… Ever since Hodaka chased Hina up to the sky and brought her back down, they both created a new hope and became linked…
☀️ Their love for one another was strong enough to tie them together as soulmates and once they wed to become official then the rain will finally stop and bring sunshine to Tokyo again. Showing how powerful and beautiful love really is to change fate.

Weathering With You (2020), Dir. Makoto Shinkai
Summary: Set during a period of exceptionally rainy weather, high-school boy Hodaka Morishima runs away from his troubled rural home to Tokyo and befriends an orphan girl who can manipulate the weather.
Thoughts: my gods this movie. It is so sweet and hopeful, filled with stunning animation and a wonderful use of sound. The story is very young, even a little innocent. And, like most great films, it seeks to play with the emotions of the audience. I found the characters to be very lovable, and their mission one you root for and ache for and wish for. It is, at its core, a story of love. Be it romance, family, friendship and even the love you have for yourself.

Weathering With You
Summary:
Tokyo is currently experiencing rain showers that seem to disrupt the usual pace of everyone living there to no end. Amidst this seemingly eternal downpour arrives the runaway high school student Hodaka Morishima, who struggles to financially support himself—ending up with a job at a small-time publisher. At the same time, the orphaned Hina Amano also strives to find work to sustain herself and her younger brother.
Both fates intertwine when Hodaka attempts to rescue Hina from shady men, deciding to run away together. Subsequently, Hodaka discovers that Hina has a strange yet astounding power: the ability to call out the sun whenever she prays for it. With Tokyo's unusual weather in mind, Hodaka sees the potential of this ability. He suggests that Hina should become a "sunshine girl"—someone who will clear the sky for people when they need it the most.
Things begin looking up for them at first. However, it is common knowledge that power always comes with a hefty price...
