Robot Carnival (1987)
Tumblr media
It’s understandable, even expected for each segment in anthology films to vary in quality. I don’t think I’ve seen one whose stories ranged as much as Robot Carnival: two are so bad they’re basically unsalvageable, two I’d qualify as “So Bad It’s Good” and the rest range from cool to brilliant.
Opening / Ending
Tumblr media
A gigantic, out-of-control mechanical device roams aimlessly through an apocalyptic desert, crushing everything in its path.
This segment begins the film on the right foot. It introduces the film’s title with a bang and features plenty of cool visuals. There’s not much of a story, but the images are so striking I could see it being expanded into a full-length film, or at least incorporated into a larger tale.
Franken’s Gears
Tumblr media
Essentially a long joke, Franken’s Gears is a play on Frankenstein. In it, a mad scientist uses electricity to bring a robot to life.
You could pause Franken's Gears at any moment to get a breathtaking desktop background. There are so many details in the mechanical contraptions of the scientist’s lab, and even more eyeball candy as the monster rises and accidentally begins tearing the lab apart. The punch line’s a good one.
Deprive
Tumblr media
After an army of alien robots invades Earth, an android with a heart decides to rescue his owner, a young woman.
This tale is one of the most over-the-top 80’s anime I’ve had the pleasure to see. Ridiculous guns, bizarre robots that look more organic than mechanical, nutty twists, a romance that makes no sense, clunky exposition, laser beams, brilliant colours… it’s all there. As a short, it’s the perfect length. Just as you begin to get tired of it, the fun’s over. I laughed long and hard, though I suspect this was not what the director was hoping for.
Presence
Tumblr media
The first segment to feature dialogue, it’s the story of a man who has become obsessed with a gynoid he’s been secretly constructing. The construct will compensate for the love he lacks towards his wife and mother. Beyond that, the plot’s a mystery to me.
There are hints of a pygmalion-like story, and I kind of see what the idea was, up until the end when all reason disappears and it makes absolutely no sense. Maybe I just “don’t get it”, but I think the real problem is the presentation. This story just wasn’t suited for such a short running time. Even with the voice-over, the characters are not well established and you never really get a feel for the inventor or his creation. The character designs intrigued me. They’re unusual, but I kind of loved them. The protagonist reminds me of a cross between sexy Squidward and myself. What do you think?
Starlight Angel
Tumblr media
The 5th segment of Robot Carnival tells the story of two teenage girls in a robot-themed amusement park. When one girl learns her crush is going out with her friend, she runs inside a hologram-projection ride and goes on a wild adventure.
While I think this story is mostly enjoyable for its bounce-off-the-walls visuals and incoherent climax (it's nearly as ridiculously '80s anime as Deprive), there are many legitimately good elements in Starlight Angel. The action is exciting and there are a few scenes that are very clever, leading to a satisfying twist.
Cloud
Tumblr media
As a robot walks through time and the evolution of man, we see various pieces of our history and technology appear in the clouds behind it in a semi-animated style.
Cloud is easily the worst segment; an amateurish piece that would be more at home projected in a student art gallery than in this OAV. This “commentary” on our civilization is obvious. It isn’t really animated. Most of the movement is done via crossfades and the drawings are very rough. This makes it boring on multiple levels. It’s as if this segment was commissioned at the last second, or forgotten about and then shoved in without anyone reviewing it to see if it would fit. This would explain why the theme of "robots" present in the other stories barely applies here. Considering none of the stories have anything to do with each other (save for the wraparound), you wouldn't lose anything by skipping Cloud.
Strange Tales of Meiji Machine Culture: Westerner's Invasion
Tumblr media
In the nineteenth century, a mad scientist (the titular Westerner) invades Japan using a giant mech suit made of wood, straw and stone. Luckily for our heroes, an equally giant machine designed to march in a parade will serve as their defender in a pinch.
One of the most inventive "Giant Robot" stories I've ever seen, there’s a lot of great humor here, some of which plays on your expectations. It’s clever, funny and exciting. My one gripe is that it doesn’t quite fit the “robot” theme. Otherwise, it’s a contender for the best.
Chicken Man and Red Neck
Tumblr media
Inspired by the Night on Bald Mountain segment of Fantasia and Disney’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a drunken man discover that, one night, all of the machines in Japan come to life to worship what can only be described as a giant mechanical demon.
What the title means, I have no idea. In fact, I'm not even sure who is the “Chicken Man”, and who is the “Red Neck”. There are a lot of great images here as cranes, street lights and other machines transform into the stuff of nightmares (which explains the alternate title for this story, “Nightmare”).
Overall, Robot Carnival is enjoyable, but the low points are very low. All anthologies feature stories of varying quality. That’s inevitable. Robot Carnival features at least one (perhaps even two if you don’t care for the art style) which I'd actively recommend skipping. If you don't, at least those segments are short, meaning the picture is still worth seeing. (On DVD, December 8, 2017)

In the first Urusei Yatsura artbook, called Tokimeki TV Memoir Urusei Yatsura Record Collection vol.1, there's some short gag manga strips written by Mamoru Oshii and drawn by Hiroyuki Kitakubo called "Megane-kun", focused on the leader of the Lum Stormtroopers, just to show how much Oshii liked the character.
Other than a few pictures scattered around I haven't been able to find any more of it but that applies to most of the artbook as well since it's out of print.
(Credit to htGOIW on Twitter, I found out about this thanks to him).

The Utena Dossier Animage June 1997 Cover to Cover Translation
(TUMBLR WHAT THE HELL WHY NO IMAGES???)
OKAY NEVERMIND THEN, IMAGINE AN IMAGE CRAMMED WITH OTHER IMAGES OF THE INCREDIBLE 36 PAGE COVER TO COVER TRANSLATION OF THE ANIMAGE JUNE '97 'THE UTENA DOSSIER', TRANSLATED BY NAGUMO, EDITED BY AYU OHSEKI, AND IMAGE EDITED BY VANNA. edit: ok it works now
Tumblr media
WHY THO?  This supplemental dropped at the beginning of the Black Rose Saga, a point at which the show takes a steep turn to the darker end. The entire Be-Papas team is represented here, and they are less cautious about spoiling their intent than they were in the similarly translated article ‘Spring 97′s Revolutionary Announcement!’ published in Animage in May of 1997. The highlights?
- The Auspicious Joining of Manga and Anime, a 4-page spread featuring Chiho Saito and Shinya Hasegawa (A text-only version of this interview is also hosted on From the Mouths of Babes, our creator content site, for ease of reference!) - For Whom the Director Smiles, a 4-page spread featuring Kunihiko Ikuhara and fellow creator Hiroyuki Kitakubo. It is also hosted as a text-only for reference here! :) - Yoji Enokido’s episode notes for episodes 1-5. - Character and setting sheets with designs and explanations - Mini-interviews with Shingo Kaneko (Assistant Director), Hiroshi Nagahama (Conceptual Design), and Shichiro Kobayashi (Background Art Design) - The Utena Post-Recording Report, a 5-page text-dense manga tour through the recording studio with Toyoshima Yuusaku - Yeah actually even more than that!
A LOT of analytic gold is in this Dossier, including tidbits like Ikuhara referring to what he does as ‘creative masturbation.’ He also confirms a long-standing suspicion I’ve had, that Utena is aimed at the same age group/audience that had grown up on Sailor Moon. Makes me feel kinda like it’s time to watch it lmao.  In the manga, the voice actors all get asked if they’re been hit on by someone of the same sex. Anthy’s VA basically ‘fuck yeah’ed that, while Touga’s did some hilariously painful comphet performance shit that yep, it was 1997. Oh, wanna know the name of the mountain the school sits on? Yeah that’s here, too!!
So how do you consume this feast, you ask? The two long-form interviews are listed above as links into From the Mouths of Babes. The images are hosted and browsable on our...brand new SO YES IT’S NOT FINISHED WIP WIP WIP...gallery at EmptyMovement.com!! At this time, to download the full size 4k images you have to click the little download button. The ones that load in the website however will be readable for most folks. If you want to save it, download it, and read it more or less as god intended, the full-size images are worked into this handy 110 mb PDF!!! <-- This is probably the best/most thorough way to look around!!!
As always, it’s our hope that presenting the content this way duplicates, a little, the ‘vibe’ of what Utena’s meta materials were like as the show rolled out. The fonts are matched as best we can, the papery-ness of the scans is preserved mostly. Absolutely give us feedback about how this works for you, and if it adds framing and at this point ~vintage vibe~ to the experience! I know it lacks the convenience of a web page or blog post, hence the two longer interviews also being in that format, but also, it’s way more fun for me to do and that’s how stuff gets done, friends. :D
omg thank you drive through, this was so much work i wanna crawl into a coma now thx
