you know the stereotype about utena fans
well
let's take a specific sequence and compare the four primary translations of Utena that I know of. why this one? because i know we changed it and also sequences with these two had a lot of minor telling differences from one effort to the next
Tumblr media
Revolutionary Girl Utena, Episode 25, Our Eternal Apocalypse
1998, UTP fan project:
Touga: You're driving quite fast. Akio: She's purring nicely, don't you think? Care to take the wheel? Touga: What? But I still don't… Akio: You're too strict… Touga: That was a rather indecent proposal, Mr. Chairman.
2003, Central Park Media DVD:
T: We're really flying down the road... A: The throb of the engine feels good, doesn't it? A: Care to take the wheel? T: Hm? But I'm not old enough.. A: Such a strict boy. T: That wasn't a fair proposal, Mr. Chairman.
2011, Nozomi Blu-ray, edited from the CPM translation via a fan led project that was us and you and it was awesome:
T: We're really flying down the road... A: The throb of the engine feels good, doesn't it? A: Care to take the wheel? T: Hm? But I'm not old enough.. A: How upright of you. T: That was an indecent proposal, Mr. Chairman.
2023, Some-Stuffs fan translation project:
T: You're flying down the road. A: Exquisite vibrations, no? A: Care to take the wheel? T: Huh? But I'm still not... A: Well, aren't you stiff? T: That was rather inappropriate, Board Chairman.
Do you like what you see? Is this level of ridiculous exactness interesting to you? Do you think these decades-spanning comparisons add anything to the discussion?
Well join our forum, Something Eternal, then. Because in the time it took for me to type this up for the Tumblr post, forum member xenofem dropped this in the thread about comparisons of the text with other examples already there broken down by color look just go
Looking at that exchange in episode 25 line by line: Touga: 随分飛ばすんですね。 The subject of this sentence is elided, which is what's leading to the discrepancies around we vs. you. The verb, "tobasu", is literally "to make something fly" or "to send something flying", but can also refer to driving a vehicle fast, or moving fast through things. The object is also elided, the literal meaning is clearly the car but there could also be room for innuendo here.
ok no but seriously, so much amazing stuff has already happened on this babby ass forum that I can barely keep up, we have birding threads and Baldur's Gate 3 threads and new fans posting their reactions as they watch for the first time threads and terfs are banned on sight

I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits

there are several different translations of rgu and sometimes they make sentences have completely different meanings between them and it drives me a little bit crazy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like this moment in the first episode.. these things are both accurate insights into utena's character and motivations but they're also completely different from each other. idk which is more accurate to the original japanese, maybe it's a sentence that can mean both depending on context or something?

This came up on youtube so I was able to relisten and confirm without having to replay the game- Nanami, who famously did not know the english word cow and so did not know that a cowbell is a bell for cows, knows the English word "lesbian". This implies so much.

Interested if anyone knows anything about the nuances of what Utena is saying in Japanese here and how well the translation conveys it

Gogai gogai!! Empty Movement has a proud tradition of Secret Santa events, be they in the forum or the Discord. This year, my Santee asked for musical content. Lol. Lmao. What luck for them, and what luck for me!!! So, in celebration of the holidays* I stretched my legs out in the Elementor site building software I got, and compiled an absolute BUTTLOAD of 2018 and 2019 Musical Utena content. Observations, stories, tidbits and tidbats about the shows from the crazy bitch that yeeted herself to Japan twice to see them and bring them back to you. (Yes, we are planning to stream them soon, sorry about the delay!! ~IRL STUFF.~)
Explore, enjoy, and hopefully you'll find something new and interesting to you! These shows basically changed my life, so it was amazing to get a prompt from someone who came into Utena *through them.* Amazing.

Tokyo Mew Mew New, Season 1 Episode 4: "Who Doesn't Want to Be Her? Our Last Member is a Huge Star!"
Whilst this is super cute in the context of the show, the TMM characters are just listening to her singing without the background music
I just can't stop thinking about how she's playing air guitar to a riff that's supposedly only in her head? what a dork I love her sm?
The judges looking confused af is me because I have no idea what she's singing about due to the lack of subs 😭😭😭
Mint looks so happy - get yourself a gf that looks at you the way she looks at her future gf

i think it's important to clarify that what utena says in response to touga's question in episode 36 ("do you love him") is not "is that possible?" but "there's no way/as if!" meaning she's saying no, she doesn't. i can't seem to find a sub that gets this correct so i wanted to put this out there. but she's not actually like confused on her feelings there as those subs would seem to suggest-- unless she's lying to herself, but it's worth making the distinction. i don't think she is though

I was today years old when I learned that the scrapped Ikuhara Sailor Moon SuperS movie was supposed to be called "Bride of Uranus"
I looked it up and was able to find a few Google translated resources that seem to confirm it and I... I... I wanna cry.
*edit - the more I read about it, I'm not sure if it was a title but it was def mean to describe Uranus relationship to Neptune. STILL 😭
*Edit edit - maybe that's the plot point

so jarring when people are talking about anime and doing close reading on the dialogue, based on the subtitles, and dont seem aware theyre looking at a translation so you cant necessarily read deeply into things like the grammar and the word choice and linguistic connotations...? i guess if you’re reading into the translator’s decisions specifically, but mostly they just don’t seem to have processed that the original creative vision did not involve the english language and what they’re reading is an interpretation
