Xanthoria parietina and Physcia lichens, growing on mulberry bark. Read more below! Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey Xanthoria and Physcia lichens grow in similar environments, and therefore they can be often seen together.  A lichen is a composite organism that arises from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi species in a mutualistic relationship.  Lichens have properties different from those of their component organisms. They come in many colors, sizes, and forms and are sometimes plant-like, but are not plants. They may have tiny, leafless branches (fruticose); flat leaf-like structures (foliose); crust-like, adhering tightly to a surface (substrate) like a thick coat of paint (crustose); a powder-like appearance (leprose); or other growth forms. To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug. - Helen Keller Yesterday I completed the famous Vlachokerasia hike, one of the most beautiful ones in Greece. What a place! The 7-hour strenuous hike was absolutely worth it. Will post photos of the amazing flora if this place, in the next days. Xanthoria parietina lichen, growing on pine bark. Read more below! Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey Xanthoria parietina prefers growing on bark and wood; it is found more rarely on rock. The upper surface is some shade of yellow, orange, or greenish yellow, almost green when growing in shady situations, while the lower surface is white, with a cortex, and with sparse pale rhizines or hapters. The outer "skin" of the lichen, the cortex, is composed of closely packed fungal hyphae and serves to protect the thallus from water loss due to evaporation as well as harmful effects of high levels of irradiation. In Xanthoria parietina, the thickness of the thalli is known to vary depending on the habitat in which it grows. Thalli are much thinner in shady locations than in those exposed to full sunshine; this has the effect of protecting the algae that cannot tolerate high light intensities. The lichen pigment parietin gives this species a deep yellow or orange-red color. The water extract of X. parietina has good antiviral activity in vitro, inhibiting the replication of human parainfluenza virus type 2. In the past it was used as a remedy for jaundice because of its yellow color. Photo taken by me, all rights reserved. This is Pseudevernia furfuracea, commonly known as tree moss. Read more below about this amazing lichen. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey - Large amounts of tree moss (approximately 1900 tons in 1997) are processed in Grasse, France for the perfume industry. - Embalming In ancient Egyptian embalming, P. furfuracea was found packed into the body cavity of mummies, although it is not certain whether this was done because of the supposed preservative properties or the aromatic properties of the lichen. - Antimicrobial activity Soluble extracts from P. furfuracea var. furfuracea and var. ceratea, as well as specific compounds found therein, have antimicrobial activity against a variety of microorganisms. - Medicinal use In Alfacar and Viznar, Andalucia, P. furfuracea is used for respiratory complaints. The thallus is washed and boiled for a long time to prepare a decoction that is drunk. Water extracts of this species have been shown to have a potent protective effect on genotoxicity caused by bismuth compounds. - Heavy metal sorption Pseudevernia furfuracea has been investigated for its ability to absorb heavy metals from solution. It has been shown that it may have potential as a biosorbent for treatment of heavy metal wastes. - Pollution monitors Because specimens of P. furfuracea tend to bioaccumulate heavy metals like Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Fe, Mn and Cu proportional to their concentration in airborne particulates, they may be used as a biomonitor of air quality, although it has been noted that both trace metal accumulation and major element accumulation is partly dependent on the hydration level of the specimen. Phellinus pini, a medicinal mushroom! Read more below. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey The Phellinus mushrooms are an important group of medicinal fungi. Phellinus pini has been used as folk medicine in Asian countries for treating ailments such as cancer and gastrointestinal diseases. Eleven phenol compounds were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. Acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory effects of a methanol extract and a hot water extract were moderate and comparable with those of galanthamine, the standard drug used to treat the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. The dietary ingestion of Ph. pini fruiting body could bestow significant health benefits due to the modulation of various physiological functions, including reduced obesity and beneficial alterations in plasma lipid profiles and biochemical parameters, including TC, LDL, TG, and glucose. Watch my new YouTube video on an important medicinal lichen: usnea https://youtu.be/oWu1VtA8qA0 According to Paul Bergner, Author of Medical Herbalism, "The usnic acid in Usnea is effective against gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus, making Usnea a valuable addition to herbal formulas for sore throats and skin infections. It is also effective against a bacterium that commonly causes pneumonia". More from Agios Achilleios, Prespes. An absolutely otherworldly place. More of me: Books: bit.ly/elefteria Courses: jointheflow.net In Classical times, the Prespa region formed part of ancient Lýnkos (Λύγκος), and the lakes were called Little and Great Brygeis. In the 10th century, the Tsar Samuil built the fortress and church of St. Achillius on an island called Agios Achillios in the Small Prespa Lake, on the Greek side of the border.  Only 11 native fish species are known from the lake, but 9 of these are endemic: Alburnoides prespensis, Alburnus belvica, Barbus prespensis, Chondrostoma prespense, Cobitis meridionalis, Pelasgus prespensis, Rutilus prespensis, Salmo peristericus and Squalius prespensis.
