Finally finished Horizon Forbidden West!
Finally finished HFW!
Quick thoughts;
Honestly one of the best games, along with Zero Dawn, about climate change, politicians, and capitalism dooming us all. Forbidden West is ultimately about the systems that make the fight against the oncoming ecological disasters so difficult. The tribalism, the apathetic leaders, the constant warring and desire for power, fascism etc etc. All of it just distractions from the disasters at our door.
Unsure if its just coincidental, but making the completely ineffective coward Tekkoteh resemble Joe Biden was hilarious.
I was very skeptical about the game at first, but once the gameplay and story really clicked with me I couldn’t stop thinking about it while watching our real world continue to deteriorate around us. Seeing multiple disasters on the news. Decimated wildlife. Forest fires. Capitalist warmongering. The pandemics. The abject poverty.
I’m not sure if Guerrilla Games set out to make the game specifically about all this, but it sure as hell felt like it.
In short; I loved it and highly recommend it. It does have flaws, but it more than makes up for it with the stratospheric highs of the gameplay, world, and overall story.
Highly, highly recommend playing it on the new and updated performance mode on ps5 if you can. It makes the gameplay really shine and makes the world feel much more immersive imo.
Also; it should have been Erend, not Varl. Not sorry.

I finally completed Horizon Zero Dawn. And the DLC, Frozen Wilds. And I’m at the point where I’m considering if I want to shell out for Horizon Forbidden West, the sequel.
If I do, I’m probably going to keep playing the sequel after that, and any prequels, which is a pretty significant time investment. If I continue, do I really want to just be hunting more machines (and occasionally people?)
I am told that HFW gives you s base that you can furnish and populate with allies. And there’s a whole bunch more resources, and weapon types and abilities. I’m going to pour 60+ hours i to it, uncover more story, and watch the numbers on my loot go up, and collect a bunch more costumes, which look cool sometimes but often also just questionable.
Like, why does the highest-level Carja fire armour look so much less cool than the Shadow version? I’m sure some poor sob in the game designed it, came up with it, cut some machine parts to size and curated the right parts from many more machines.
If I continue with a New Game+, the only thing I want to do is to customise my armour and weapons. We can blast armour plates off machines, right? Why don’t we pick those up afterwards, paint them with pigments, cut them to size at workshops, and then bind them with wire? If we can collect wildlife pelts, why don’t we tan them, cure them, and then use the leathers to fashion our own armour designs?
I would readily pour all my resources into hunting the specific things I need for my own custom armour. I would readily spend another 60+ hours seeking out rabbits and Stormbirds and Tramplers and Chargers just to get those cool parts. And when a DLC appears with new armour customisations I would do it all over again, even pay another twenty bucks for the privilege.

owl in flight
is this supposed to be a great horned owl? the ones i'm familiar with are much greyer than the golden tones of the owls in forbidden west. but i am not an ornithologist by any stretch of the imagination and i'm unfamiliar with californian owls! they probably have color variations in different populations - or perhaps it's a long-eared owl instead? bird experts feel free to weigh in!
