#because any other reasoning just wouldn't work on those people #yesterday stumbled across another troll comment (though not a new one) from an Odin apologist #saying that Odin 'never abused Freya' and women like her 'always lie about those things'#alas there's no option to post gif responses in the YT comment section #otherwise I'd be doing that on a hourly basis whenever seeing nonsense like this; or posts about how #'Thr*d and Atreus should get together; because apparently a girl punching a boy in the face before trying to #chop his head off as he lies helpless on the ground (which she would've done if her mother hadn't interfered) after calling him #'a killer just like his father'; or a boy 15 years of age playing a parent to girl's actual parents - one of whom is #a semi-functioning literally gigantic alcoholic who slaughtered this boy's people and bragged about it in front of him -#is a basis for healthy romance #rather than an actual healthy and equal and caring relationship between Atreus and Angrboda #who trusted him when he admitted he had no idea what he was doing and agreed to share responsibility with him #which was supposed to be his all along but that he wasn't ready to take just yet #in addition to opening up about her own pain of losing both parents just to help him feel better #and aiding him in embracing their shared heritage which was what Atreus wanted from the moment he #learned of his giant background and 'Loki'#that is on top of taking care of Fen while Atreus embarked on a quest of his own (both times) and being the only one who could #sooth him back into human form during his animal transformations using only words of support and physical gentleness

More to add for the "Jotnar are Indigenous coded" (maybe) but the different Giant characters like... display different versions of intergenerational Trauma & how each of their families have or haven't dealt with it.

Faye/Kratos/Atreus trio were the most well-adjusted (next to Angrboda's family unit), but still, trauma there, obviously. Faye has had to be on the run & hiding from the people who committed genocide against her people & family, taking on a new name from Laufey to Faye, just to escape them. She had no one to speak her Native language to, which is effectively now a dead language. She had to hide her own heritage from even her own husband and son (first likely for her own safety, & then later because of the prophecy), yet she still told Atreus things she knew about her own culture, & the truth about her people's history. Of course, Faye also took on an active role in literally fighting her oppressors, forging a weapon specifically to kill the person who had committed genocide on her people. Her prime revenge ultimately comes in the form of living a happy life (what a spit in the face to those who want you dead, than to survive, live, & do it happily), having a Jotunn (AND divine) son, a champion of the giants to carry on her work & bring Ragnarok to Asgard. Kratos is the other parent who tries his best to raise his son when he doesn't have knowledge of his wife's culture & supports him to the best of his ability, yet is anxious about Atreus being in the world knowing he's a target for being Jotnar AND expecting to be killed off & Atreus orphaned.

Angrboda/her parents/Gryla showed a similar situation, but instead their family was restricted to hiding in a specific area of their family, causing isolation (& this might be reaching but it reminded me of reservations? Not quite similar but still). Angrboda's parents gave her a healthy coping mechanism that was important to their people (art & creating the murals), taught her magic & their people's ways & culture, about Jotunheim's nature, & taught her how to survive in the world without them before they died. They created a world for Angrboda to live in safely & gave her the tools she needed to survive. Yet we also see how their people's genocide & the aftermath has negatively affected Gryla & her relationship with her granddaughter. Gryla bitterly living in the world that tried to kill her yet still trying to create a softer one for Angrboda, even if their relationship is strained. "She's not evil, she's lost".

Thor/Sif/their kids are obviously the worst off. There's a lot of self hatred with Thor, who has turned away from his Jotun side and allied himself with his mother's oppressors & became one himself. Despite Odin apparently having considered Forgyn his one true love, he doesn't care much for their son or treat him well & physically abused him, which Thor passes onto his children. His trauma, self hatred, & any possible guilt is likely at least partially responsible for his alcoholism. Thor & Sif's violence towards their children causes Magni & Modi to become violent & end up dying trying to kill another Jotun (Atreus). They feel no sympathy or solidarity with other giants but instead ally themselves with the oppressor & are all the worse for it. Atreus even tries to reform Thor somewhat and becomes friends with Thrúd.

#either the writers are fucking geniuses who did their proper research #or they accidentally created one of the best Indig coded races without being weird that I've ever seen #Faye chose to wander the world & help others but had to sacrifice her identity to do it #Angrboda's family chose to remsin in their homeland & keep their traditions but at the cost of being isolated & seperate from others #Thor is the one to completely disregard his Jotun identity altogether #gow #gow ragnarok spoilers #I've been having great convos w rhubarbspring about this #I STILL don't know that the Jotnar being Indig coded is even intentional #& Indig ppl aren't the only ppl to experience inter/generational trauma but I'm finding a lot to extract in similarities from this

My Favorite Moments in God of War: Ragnarok

[Inspired by my favorite moments in God of War 2018]

Spoilers

- Watching Atreus slowly break through the fog with a fresh kill that he hunted himself, a head or so taller than we’d last see him, and clearly much more confident in himself.

- Atreus and Kratos’s immediate display of affection for each other, in stark contrast to the previous game, with Kratos gripping his son’s shoulder in acknowledgement and Atreus smiling to his father.

- Mimir “sitting” inside of the house, on a pillow with a candle next to him and a book to read and a nice pipe to smoke. He clearly has become part of the family.

- The fear in Kratos’s voice when he searches for Atreus’s after Fenrir’s death

- OH FUCK A HUGE BEAR

- OH SHIT THIS HUGE BEAR IS ACTUALLY BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF KRATOS. HOW CAN A BEAR GO TOE-TO-TOE WITH KRATOS

- OH F U C K IT’S ATREUS

- Kratos shouting Atreus’s name as he lies limp in the snow and you see, for just a moment, Kratos wondering if he has once again killed his own child with his own hands.

- Thor just casually stopping by their house and pouring them some mead

- The way Thor just launches Kratos, just like his brother did in the game before

- The way the ground crackles like thunder when Thor slams his foot down

- Thor shocking Kratos back to consciousness to continue the fight

- The frozen lightning bolt that stays for the rest of the game

- Sindri and Atreus being besties

- Tyr finally standing straight once Kratos snaps some sense into him and he’s towering over everyone

- Atreus constantly messing up when he’s trying to bond with Angrboda

- Atreus TURNING INTO A WOLF

- Thrúd

- “What do I call you?”

- Atreus running into Kratos’s arms and staying there, holding tight, face buried in his dad’s chest even when Kratos lets go

- Kratos’s gentle “What has happened?”

- Kratos standing up for his son when all of the other companions tell him how much of a massive fuck up it was to release Garm

- Fenrir, now resurrected in Garm, and his floppy wittle ears

- “I am sorry.”

- “Do not be sorry. Be better.”

- The bar fight back in Asgard

- Thor actually listening to Atreus and being affected by it. The visible shame Thor felt. Atreus’s honest desire to help.

- Ingrid saving Atreus

- “Which way are we headed?”

- “In the direction of deer.”

- Sindri’s entire character arc, starting from a loveable comic relief character to a bitter, vengeful brother in mourning, unrelenting in his rage towards Atreus and Kratos

- “I AM RAGNAROK.”

- Thrúd and Atreus making back up in Asgard during Ragnarok

- Atreus pushing his father out of the way during the blast in a final attempt to save him from his prophesized death

- “Does it scare you?”

- “Yes.”

- “That is why you must do it.”

- The HUG

- Kratos finally crying openly when he sees what his wife painted for him at the back of the mural

MORE All-Father!Kratos headcanons because, yes, i'm still obsessed.

* kratos, as a diplomat, is incredibly stern with his tone when it comes to negotiation. this is not just because of his spartan nature: it's because he feels the need to be straight forward with the terms and conditions, otherwise war would break out again.

* the dwarves, as a thank you for freeing them from odin's grasp, crafted kratos an armour set fit for a king. he noticed the huldra brothers full brand on it - sindri had also joined the collaboration. he cherishes the armour with his heart and soul while looking after it, just as he should of done with his previous armour in the beginning. he refuses to take advantage of sindri any longer.

* speaking of sindri, kratos had managed to actually converse with him about mourning a brother. they both came to an understanding and while sindri can never truly forgive and forget, kratos always has his door open to let sindri come and go.

* in kratos' main home, many individuals of power - such as freya and sif - come and go using the 'realm room' as it's the most convenient point to travel to and from. originally, kratos had minded but mimir managed to convince him to think otherwise.

* mimir is now officially considered kratos' right hand head and advisor. the people of the (now) 8 realms as 'the all-fathers ultimate guider', as they knew he had counselled kratos and positively influenced his decisions.

* while atreus does come and go, he does act as a sort of spokesman for the jötnar. kratos wants everyone to be at peace and refuses to have a bias towards anyone because atreus is his son. atreus has deep respect for his father because of that.

* kratos had asked freya to teach him some enchantments and spells to help him have more independence in each realm. freya accepted. safe to say, kratos learnt 'falki' and can turn into a falcon for faster travel. he does not abuse it. atreus shit himself when he say a dark brown and white falcon fly towards him when kratos visited jötunhiem.

* kratos had a statue build for faye, freyr and brok to show that they were honoured individuals who did their best for the cause. kratos managed to ask sindri for permission, in which he said yes. brok's statue is in svartalhiem in a private place for close friends.

* kratos has braids and gold in his beard thanks to angrboda braiding them every time she visits. he cannot bring himself to remove them, and ultimately rocks the look.

* he returned artifacts taken by odin that he did not deserve to keep. the people were thankful.

* kratos makes mushroom quiche for his staff and close friends every friday simply because he can.

* everytime atreus returns, kratos bear hugs him in private. atreus doesn't mind at all.

"Kratos, Mimir, and Angrboda are going to leave Midgard because Atreus will need their help against enemy gods-" okay, but consider that Kratos, Mimir, and Angrboda are gonna leave Midgard to seek out Atreus because they need his help.

Think about what Kratos said before Atreus left: "we survived today because your choices. Who to trust. Who to call friend. Son, you are ready."

I'm not saying that Kratos saving Atreus from the next Big Bad wouldn't be a good story, but it just feels too predictable and not what SSM is setting up. Kratos sees his son as an equal now. By the time Atreus comes back, he's going to be a young adult. Atreus immediately getting captured by the next pantheon (mostly seen this with the Egyptian pantheon which... the series has established they're not really like that) and needing his dad to go rescue him just feels kinda lame. It also kinda proves Kratos' old viewpoint right.

I think it'd be a perfect bookend for their relationship if it was Kratos coming to Atreus for help, especially when their whole tension in Ragnarök was about Atreus wanting to protect Kratos (and them both hiding the truth from each other). I think when Kratos is inevitably at his lowest point, he's going to need Atreus to raise him up. Everyone will need the hope and light Atreus brings.

And I think that lowest point is going to be Tyr dying. Listen, I love him, but Valhalla gave him so many subtle death flags: him wanting Kratos to take his position as God of War, him helping Kratos find peace and enlightenment, the overall Jesus vibes... I think he's going to heroically sacrifice himself when fighting the next Big Bad and ascend to the Higher Plane of Existence.

I like the little detail of Loki's screwups being included in God of War in that every time Loki makes a mistake or screws up in some way, the way he solves it ultimately gives him and his allies something good in return.

In the og myths, Loki fucks up a LOT. But he always manages to get something positive out of it as well. He gets drunk and chops off Sif's hair? He gets Mjolnir for Thor. He convinces the Aesir to agree to agree to the stone mason deal to build the wall only for them to nearly be forced to marry Freya off to him when it backfires? He gives birth to Sleipnir and gives him to Odin.

Atreus released Garm and he's tearing through the realms? Atreus gets to reunite with his family and even manages to put Fenrir's soul into Garm, giving them a huge wolf that is totally loyal to Kratos and Atreus who can open tears in between realms which ultimately saves them all in Ragnarok. Atreus disobeys his father and runs away to Asgard? He not only makes allies in Thrud/Skjoldr that help out later but also gives him knowledge and put him in conflict with Heimdall which then pushes Kratos to kill him early, giving them control over when Ragnarok starts. Atreus seeks Freya out without Kratos' knowledge and almost gets murdered by her? He ends up giving her the information about realm travel which eventually leads to her deciding to work with Kratos to get her freedom, delaying her revenge and setting her on the path of moving beyond her pain to fight Odin. Atreus ends up going to Ironwood on accident and is missing for two days but refuses to tell anyone? He learns soul magic which he later uses to stop Odin, creates Jormungandr who is the reason they got anything done in God of War (2018), and he makes an invaluable ally in Angrboda whose knowledge and disobedience of fate help them survive Ragnarok.

Loki is the vehicle of change in every story he's in. Without Atreus doing what he does, acting out, causing chaos and being Loki, Odin and Asgard would've won the war. Every mistake Loki makes ends up doing something good in the long term. He is the one that pushes Kratos to get involved and to open his heart to others' suffering.

Without Atreus, nothing would've changed and Odin would've won.

what they did with sindri in this game was (positively) evil btw. out of everyone it’s the comedic relief background character that gets slammed straight into the foreground through trauma and loss. you don’t see shit like this coming. everyone gets a happy ending but the silly little dwarf who gives u upgrades and makes jokes all the time is the one who walks away completely changed.

kratos and atreus grow as people through each other, freya finds a new family so that she can heal from all her losses, angrboda gets to make her own ending and free herself from the destiny she thought she was tied to.

and sindri?? sindri. sindri just gives up on everything completely, because he lost everything trying to help people who just kept taking and taking from him. it’s not the sort of development you’d expect to see from a character like him and that’s what makes it so jarring. everyone can’t just walk away from a war like this happy and sindri is just the one that got dealt a terrible, terrible hand
