Another Cameron Button Up
Thrifted fabric, I think it's poly or a cotton poly blend (more poly than cotton). I only had 4 white buttons, so you get one surprise red button near the bottom hem.
I think I've done this collar/collar stand method enough times that i want to try and find a different approach. Surely there are methods that are a little less fiddly but get a similar result? To youtube!
Tumblr media
I cut a piece from a colorful bandana for the collar stand. I wanted the blue/green to show but it's yellow - womp womp. Still fun! Learning moment, though. I was too focused on cutting with the correct grainline alignment that I didn't consider placement on the print and where the ends would be that will show up the most.
Tumblr media
I am unsure if I'll add a pocket. The rest of the bandana is certainly big enough to use for a pocket, but it is LOUD and I'm not sure if I would wear it as often. But I can think about it as long as I want because I could add a pocket whenever!

Serger came pre-threaded, so rather than concur my fear of learning how to thread it I just went ahead and pulled out some fabric that matched the thread that was already in there. 😂 Pattern is the Luna Tank by @helens__closet (it’s free!). #sergerfear #intimidating #lunatank #helenscloset #happyfruit #fatsewingclub #memade #sewingproject #sewing #sharppointysticks #sew #cheatingonmyknittingwithsewing https://www.instagram.com/p/CnugjWZpISR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here’s my #yorkpinafore I made from @helens__closet with this lovely rust corduroy I got at @scrap_rva. I made this beaut awhile ago but thankfully it’s finally cool enough to wear it. Now I just need to fix one of the pockets since I didn’t cut both of them going the same direction with the nap of the fabric. The back is also a different nap direction from the front, but I like the contrast. I don’t know why I wasn’t paying attention to this when I cut it out, but it’s all learning, right? . . #sewing #helenscloset #corduroy #scraprva #imakemyclothes #isewmyownclothes #ilovetosew #sewcialist #sewing https://www.instagram.com/p/BpAokJeH1c9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=10qnhv35gnpij

The Year of the Top
2018 was the year of the top for me! I made 3 Elliot sweaters from Helen’s Closet Patterns, 4 Granville blouses from Sewaholic and 2 Archer button-ups from Grainline.
The button up shirts were fun to sew and boosted my confidence as a sewist. It was great fun to use my Liberty London stash. I did slight fbas on both woven patterns and shortened the sleeves just a touch. I prefer the Granville to the Archer, with the tower plackets on the sleeves and the fitted back.
I love a turtleneck and it is fun to have me-mades to wear in the winter, so the Elliot fit the bill. It is an easy sew and I found nice basic knit fabric at my local Joanns. Since these pictures I have cut the elongated back off my gray and burgundy Elliots. At 50 plus years old, though i could use the coverage, the trendy look wasn’t appealing to me.
I look forward to making a sleeveless version of the Granville this spring for summer wear. I have some fabric already slotted for the make!

Ashton top number 1.... it will be one of many, for sure. Excellent pattern 👌🏻 size 14 with no adjustments amazingly! Although next time I’ll lengthen it a smidge. Talk about slow fashion. Took me about two weeks off and on to embroider this #blackwoodcardigan with a side of lots of Netflix. Even if it did take me a while I love the end result. I am realllllly slow but I am learning something new. This was a good reminder project that it is all about the process 🍁🍂🍃 . . #minervadotcom #minervacraftsbloggernetwork #helenscloset #helensclosetpatterns…

It’s Me Made May (I wish that had a better name but w/e!) - and I finished something. Yahoo!
The Gilbert Top from Helen’s Closet, in a lightish weight cotton woven I thrifted from a local reuse warehouse.
The pattern alignment was a total accident! I should try less hard more often.

Cameron Button up - pt 3
It’s finished! 🎉 I believe this is a washed black linen/cotton blend.
Tumblr media
I hadn’t yet washed it in these photos, I suspect it’ll loosen up a little bit, especially at the collar.
Running through my changes and what I thought about them:
COLLAR - I’m glad I slimmed it down. I really don’t like sewing collar stands!!
SLEEVES - I kept the sleeve length as-is but cuffed it twice. Seems like it will stay cuffed on its own so I don’t plan to tack them down (I thought I might have to do that).
LENGTH - I’m happy with the little extra I added!
HIPS - It’s really nice to have a longer line button up that doesn’t pull across the hips & butt if I want to wear it buttoned all the way down.
SHOULDERS - I squared the shoulders .75″. I have pretty much no slope so I’m glad I did that. I forgot to try this method for making the sleeve easier to set in, if I make another one I’ll give it go. I’m not confident it would really help, but maybe?

Cameron Button up - modifications pt 2
I finished a muslin and found I needed a few more modifications than just the shoulder!
The collar was too wide for my liking, so I’ve slimmed that down by almost half.
Tumblr media
I squared the shoulder on *just the front pieces*, which turned out okay! Glad I didn’t have to futz with the yoke at all, like I thought I might have to do.
Tumblr media
I added 1″ of length to the torso at their lower lengthen/shorten line. And I added a little bit more ease on the sides starting at the last 5″ of the torso flaring out at the bottom hem.
Tumblr media
I appreciate that if this side shaping is not what I need after all, I can simply unpick it and sew up a new line if that’s too much extra ease!

Cameron Button Up - square shoulder modification, pt 1
I’m documenting my experience adjusting the Helen’s Closet Cameron Button Up.
Tumblr media
My shoulder slope is nearly a straight line; I’ve found I need to adjust the shoulders on Helen’s Closet patterns by 3/4″-1″. That’s quite a lot! And will require me to adjust the sleeve, or other areas, rather than just changing the slope of the shoulder area.
(I’m still new to sewing a top with a yoke. Previously, I used a pattern by Thread Theory for my husband’s shirt and only had to adjust the shoulder slightly.)
For this Cameron Button Up, I’m trying 2 ways to square the shoulder and will report back on my findings!
1) Using a method from The Palmer Pletsch Complete Guide to Fitting, doing a slash and spread on the yoke piece, and then raising the underarm on the front and back to match the spread on the yoke:
Tumblr media
In practice, when I spread it out, the top half of the yoke paper piece kicked out (yellow line I added below). I wasn’t able to simply true it up so I made a guess with a new line and chopped off some of the bit that stuck out 😵‍💫
Tumblr media
2) I’m more used to simply adding more paper to the shoulder piece on the front and back, when there’s no yoke. Wanted to see what happens! It seemed to me I only needed to adjust the slope of the front on this pattern. The yoke was fairly straight across. So, the second method I’m trying out is adding tissue to the front shoulder area, and raising the underarms to match.
Tumblr media
Stay tuned for findings!
