Hello, Operator
Tumblr media
Word Count: 1,569 (nice)
A/N: this might become a bunch of short snippets, because I love the idea, the almost pettiness, of Tommy getting info from the switchboard operators. (Because I need one more thing to be writing right now. )
Warnings: in character swearing, season 5 episode 6 spoilers
“I don’t know, sir, all the boy said was that his brothers were shooting a Facist tonight.” Your heart stuck in your throat. You knew you shouldn’t have been listening in on the phone call, however, no one usually, except for Mr. Shelby himself, had calls coming out of the betting shop this late, but when the man on the other end gave you the outgoing information for the call, you knew it was someone different.
“Which boy?” The voice was abrasive and agitated.
“The youngest. Finn.” His voice shook as he ratted out the Shelby.
There was a long pause. Finn was probably about your sisters age. You held your breath, waiting for the call to commence. If they heard you on the line listening to their call you’d be done for.
“Thank you, Billy.”
You almost collapsed on the station as you felt the back of your neck and all of your skin prickle with sweat.
You shouldn’t have had the number for Thomas Shelby MP memorized, but your board usually connected the calls outgoing from Birmingham to the next set of ladies in London, and it was enough of the regular occurrence that you knew his number in Parliament.
You waited, but the line only rang and rang since there was no one on the end to answer.
“Edith,” you shook the white-bloused arm of your friend at the station next to yours.
She removed her headset, expecting some mundane gossip, but looked surprised at what came out of your mouth.
“Was there a rally happening tonight? The Facists? Was someone giving a speech?” She took in the pallor of your complexion as you gave a hard swallow.
She shook her head, although in confirmation, you could see the disgust that her look was tinged with also, “Yes. Oswald Mosley was giving a speech at Bingley Hall for—“
You pulled the coat off the back of your chair, pulling it on as quickly as you could, “Edith, I need you to watch my station for me, I’ll be back. I just, I have to go.”
You ran as quickly as you could from the red terra cotta building and down Newhall Street. Bingley Hall. Bingley Hall.
It had to be about 2 kilometers there. The rain was coming down in buckets as you made it to Livery Street.
Lionel and Water Streets both went by quick.
Kenyon. Hall Street. Your legs were growing tired. The air was thick, and your lashes were heavy with the smog filled tear drops coming from the heavens.
You had to slow down and walk for a bit. If Mr. Shelby wasn’t in the House of Commons, and clearly he wasn’t in the betting shop, he had to be at Bingley Hall.
And that phone call confirmed your musing that there was no way this man, who had done as much as he had to help contribute to some growth and business infrastructure in Small Heath and in Birmingham itself, was a facist.
You checked your watch. If you kept up in a sprint it would be about four minutes and you’d be there. It was already almost half-eight.
A man yelled at you to slow down as you splashed him with a puddle. Water already was soaking you to the bone through the neck of your coat, no matter how tight you had it pulled.
Lodge Road was the quickest way to Whitmore Street, but from the looks of the gathering crowd, you weren’t going to make it in through the front. The whole building was lined with Blackshirts, and you tried skirting around to the back without looking overly suspicious.
“Miss, is there something you need?”
You fondled the old wrinkled card you had found in your pocket on the way over as you spied the silver Bentley residing behind the building, “Sir, I apologize, I received an urgent telegram to deliver to Mr. Shelby, and my boss said I must come straight away. I didn’t think I’d make it though the front, but if someone could let me—“
“I can take it to him,” the man’s expression was unwavering. He was sizing you up as he spoke.
“If I could let you, I would, but my boss said I was to deliver it myself.”
He nodded, “Mr. Shelby is currently occupied accompanying Mr. Mosley—“
“I can wait. Inside. Somewhere.” You batted your eyelashes as you swallowed hard, hoping to force tears into your eyes, “Sir, I really can wait. I just can’t lose my job over a silly telegram.”
He fell for your faux femme fatale, leading you in the back door, through a maze of halls and doors, and to a dressing room.
“You’ll wait here. I’ll instruct someone to retrieve you when Mr. Mosley speech is over.”
“Thank you, sir.” He didn’t hear your tone as sarcasm, but gratitude.
You paced the room, surprised when only a few minutes later Mr. Shelby barged through the door, followed by his brother.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Your eyes were wide as the other Mr. Shelby slammed the door behind them.
“There was a phone call earlier, it came from—“ he interrupted you, grabbing your arm.
“We’re not talking about this here,” he wagged a finger, instructing you to keep quiet, and his grip on your upper arm tightened, dragging you to the door, “C’mon.”
The sound of your three sets of footsteps was covered by the cacophony of chaos coming from the rest of the building as he dragged you through the white painted brick maze you had just been brought through.
You couldn’t help but feel in trouble, like a disciplined child as you were sandwiched between the two of them as they deliberated in quick and hushed whispers about a friend who had been murdered and repeating many a times, “what the fuck happened?”
Mr. Shelby walked with one hand tightly on your arm, the other brandishing the 1911 pistol at his side as he drug you out the now unmanned back door and to his car.
“Brother, you drive.” He handed him the key, opening the back door and all but pushing you in as he clambered in next to you out of the rain.
“So,” he rolled a cigarette from the silver tin against his lips before lighting it with gilded lighter, an eyebrow raised expectantly as he turned to face you, offering the tin to you as an olive branch for the manner in which he drug you from the building.
You shook your head, heart hammering in your chest, unaware of where the vehicle was headed at a high rate of speed.
“What was this phone call that was placed earlier?”
You swallowed hard. “The call was made from your betting shop, sir,” his tired blue eyes, hidden under the brim of his flat cap, watched you as you plucked the lint on the sleeve of your coat, “a man, I didn’t recognize his voice, had me put him though to an Irishman. He said he was made aware that there were plans to shoot a facist tonight.”
Both the men took in the same sharp breath.
“Did you hear any names?”
You didn’t want to give up his little brother. You’d never forgive yourself if you were the one responsible for him getting hurt.
“Mr. Shelby, if I give you names you have to promise me no one will get hurt.”
He quirked an eyebrow at you as he lit another cigarette and his brother spoke from the front, “Aye, love, we ain’t promisin’—“
“You have my word, no one will get hurt.”
“Tom!” His brothers fist pounded the seat as they stopped in front of your lodging. The fact they knew where you lived held over your head in exchange for giving the correct information was enough of a threat.
“Arthur, we need information. She has it.”
Arthur spitted and sputtered, lighting a cigarette in a huff.
“Your,” you sighed, “your younger brother. Finn. He told a man named Billy that you were shooting a facist tonight. This Billy is the one that made the call to the Irishman.”
“Fookin’ hell.” Arthur whispered around the cigarette.
Tommy Shelby looked as if whatever bit of faith, whatever glimmer of it, remained in trusting his own family had vanished.
He sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose as he fished in his pocket, pulling out a money clip before you interrupted him.
“It’s not about the money, sir,” you swallowed hard. This hadn’t been the first time you’d ran to him (literally or figuratively depending on the urgency) with important information about some portion of his business, and you were sure it wouldn’t be the last, “I just thought, I could help, do the right thing.”
He chuckled at your assessment, helping an assassination go though successfully being the right thing, as he handed you 10 pounds.
“Thank you,” he said, vacating the car and letting you out on to the sidewalk in the pouring rain, “you need to get inside,” he instructed you, gesturing with the hand now holding the cigarette, “lock the door, be safe.”
He closed the door and rounded the front of the vehicle, getting in parallel to his brother before they tore off in to the rain, the car disappearing as a flash of lightning and clap of thunder brandished the sky.

Soccer World Cup Champion Tobin Heath’s Artwork is Up for Auction
We chatted with the World Cup champion and artist about her creative process, the inspiration behind her newest work and what it’s like to collaborate with her teammates off the field.
Can you describe your creative process at the very beginning of a new piece of art?
At re–inc, we start each season and collection with a specific feeling and message we want to share. From there, I begin the process of trying to express that through my art. I’m not the type of person who uses words to share how I’m feeling. For our Black & White collection, the feeling is the tension one feels when trying to reimagine the status quo. That’s something that we’ve really lived in starting this company.
As an artist, where do you draw inspiration from?
I’ve never had to look for inspiration. My inspiration is all around and within me.
What inspired your newest piece, Pixelation?
Starting with the expression of the tension, struggle and polarity of reimagining the status quo, I painted a “program,” which is the pattern you see in the painting. For me, this represents the fact that no matter how unique or individual each of us are, status-quo culture pulls us into a system. I knew I wanted to break that system somehow in this painting. When I couldn’t figure out how, it drove me crazy. I didn’t want to ruin the painting, so I became frustrated and realized that through the process, I was living in the exact condition that I was trying to paint. With that, I began trying different ways of breaking the pattern. Many were not right, but by trying and being brave, I found my way into breaking the system.
How did you select Alternate Roots as the partial benefactor for the auction?
At re–inc, we always want to start anything we do with a giving heart, even in the early stages of our company. That mindset is our brand’s core. And with the art auction, we wanted to partner specifically with an organization that gives others the opportunity to create as well. Alternate Roots is a Southern arts organization that has supported cultural organizers that champion social and economic justice for more than 40 years.
Beyond art and soccer, what is something you are completely obsessed with?
Being true to myself. Which I am able to do every day in football, in art and in re–inc.
At what point in your life did you realize you wanted to pursue soccer professionally?
Football is my life’s passion. I’ve always thought of it that way. I have worked to improve myself and to be my absolute best. I am grateful that it is now my profession, but I never think of it as a job.
How did conversations start with your teammates to launch Re–inc and what has been like to collaborate with them off the field?
We started re–inc to build a structure to support our own values. To bet on ourselves, and by doing so, betting on people everywhere who have been undervalued or misunderstood, or feel forced to fit in. Starting re–inc was an opportunity for us to express our true selves — and help others do the same — and break the structures and boxes that hold us back in the world.

Tumblr media
Mojean Aria was last year's recipient of the Heath Ledger Scholarship. Since then has gone on to do some pretty amazing things! When we caught-up with him last night, we asked him how winning had impacted his life.
"Changed my life," Aria said with confidence. "I have since then gotten an agent, which I didn't have before and have an incredible team. I am also currently working on a series and my first film." In addition, he spoke about how he has gotten very close to the Ledger family and has been able to spend quite a bit of time with them.
We then asked Aria who he thought was going to win this year, in which he promptly said, "I don't know. I really have no idea. I don't want to ask because I am so nervous for them. But there are a couple finalists that I know are incredible, I've seen their work and they are really good! I love Charmaine Bingwa. She reminds me of a young Viola Davis. Aaron Glenane has been doing this a long time. He can do comedy and drama better than a lot of people I know."
When asked what he thought Heath Ledger's legacy was he said, "To explore the depths of human curiosity and expression."
Emotions ran high in all the finalists, as just being there was such a huge honor. Here is what a few of them had to say.
Tumblr media
"I get teary eyed every time I talk about Heath," said finalist Aaron Glenane. "His generosity and his spirit are two things that I really admire."
"I think his legacy was helping people, he was all about helping his fellow Australians move to America," agreed Bethany Whitmore.
"It's such a huge honor to be here tonight, it's amazing to be in some small way associated with Heath," explained Harvey Zielinski.
Tumblr media
While finalist Ezekiel Simat said, "I love Heath so much, it would be amazing to be connected to him and the Ledger family, as their generosity is on another level."
Even actress Abbie Cornish – who co-starred in the film Candy alongside Ledger – said, "Working with Heath was one of the best experiences of my life. He was such an incredible human and an incredible actor. He was very free, spontaneous, loving, and generous. What an amazing career he had."
And the 2018 winner is...
Tumblr media
Charmaine Bingwa! The Australian/Zimbabwean actress is not only the winner of the 10th Annual Heath Ledger Scholarship, but the first woman of color/openly gay woman to be honored with this prestigious award.
Bingwa, has also been honored with the Sydney Theatre Awards and Broadway World nominations for Best Supporting Actress in 2017. Most recently, she has starred in the film Nekrotronic (2018) alongside Monica Bellucci. In addition, she starred, wrote, produced, and directed the series Little Sista (2018) which won Best Screenplay at the LGBT Toronto Film Festival. She also recently starred in the Australian feature film The Pitch, and three short films – "Boys Will Be Boys", "Can You Dig It" and "Waiting for God." She also wrote the German-Australian short film "Stille Nacht".
In addition to her career-making turn in Doubt: A Parable, last year alone she graced theatre stages 79 times in five different productions in some of Australia's most celebrated venues. These included Mame at Hayes Theatre (dir: Richard Carroll), American Beauty Shop at KXT Bakehouse (dir: Anna McGrath), Birdland at New Theatre and (dir: Anthony Skuse), The Seagull in the iconic role of Masha at The Depot Theatre (dir: Anthony Skus).
Bingwa can also sing and play the guitar. She has performed with international artists such as Demi Lovato, Rachel Platten and Fifth Harmony on their tours in Australia.
Tumblr media
She has studied improv at Upright Citizens Brigade (completed 101, 201, 301, 401), has studied at the Atlantic Acting School in New York and holds a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Commerce.
When we met up with Charmaine on the carpet she was incredibly humble, beautiful and absolutely delightful.
"It would mean so much to win, just to be associated with Heath and his legacy would be a huge thing," said Bingwa on the red carpet. "It would mean for me a chance for other voices to get out there and be heard. It's hard for females. It's hard for gay people, women of color; I feel like I embody all three of those things. So, I think it would be great to get out there and represent all of those people because everyone likes to be heard and no one likes to feel invisible."
Charmaine was radiating when she arrived last night, wearing a beautiful bright green dress, "I thought I would add a pop of color," she said with a smile. She was very sweet, and genuinely honored to be there. When asked what she thought Ledger's legacy was she said, "To change people with your spirit. He was such a spirited man. That goes to show how far that contagious spirit can get you and the huge impact it can have on people."
It was without a doubt an unforgettable evening for everyone involved. Many VIP guests came out to show their support for this magnificent cause. Names such as Max Greenfield (New Girl), Liv Hewson (Santa Clarita Diet), Tom Cocquerel (Table 19), Gia Carides (Big Little Lies), Damon Herriman (Once Upon A Time in Hollywood), Louis Hunter (The Fosters), Abbie Cornish (Candy), and Jonny Pasvolsky (Westworld)… just to name some. And of course, Heath's father Kim, mother Sally Bell, and sister Kate Ledger were all present.
Judges
This year's HLS judges consisted of Carmen Cuba (Casting Director of Stranger Things), Jeremy Podeswa (Emmy-nominated director of Handmaid's Tale & Game of Thrones), and Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Producer of The Meg and Transformers Franchise).
Tumblr media
We were able to talk to last year’s judge Kimberly Peirce, who is a director known best for the feature film Boys Don't Cry, which won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Hillary Swank. When we spoke with Pierce we asked her what as a judge she looked for when picking the finalists?
"What was great about being a judge was being able to clear my head and watch the tapes and be as open as possible,” Pierce replied. “At first, you’re always scared that you won't see it. Then suddenly these people come on screen and they are beautiful, brilliant, charismatic, and well trained. They just capture your heart and tell you a story".
Then we asked her what specific qualities she looks for in the finalists. Pierce answered, "To me it's a level of honesty. But not a rigid honesty, it's an honesty that has humor, it has charisma, that is constantly changing, brings me in one way and moves me another way."
It's clear after talking to Kimberly Pierce that personality and heart go a long way with the judges when it comes to selecting finalist each year. You could definitely tell that each and every one of the finalists that were selected this year had something special about them or were very unique in one way or another. I can honestly say that all of the finalists seemed to be incredibly talented and beautiful human beings; we will definitely be seeing more of all of them in the near future.
Scholarship
This life changing scholarship is worth over $30,000 which covers the cost of living expenses in Los Angeles, Qantas airfares, acting classes and mentoring sessions. To date, $280,000 in Scholarship prizes has been awarded to help the winners with career and educational opportunities in the U.S.

Australians in Film is pleased to announce the finalists of its 10th anniversary Heath Ledger Scholarship.
The finalists are: Aaron Glenane (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Danger Close), Bethany Whitmore (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Girl Asleep), Charmaine Bingwa (Little Sista, upcoming Nekrotronic) Kipan Rothbury (Significant Strangers), Brenna Harding (Puberty Blues, Black Mirror), Ezekiel Simat (High Life, upcoming Lambs of Gods), Shalom Brune-Franklin (Doctor Doctor, Thor: Ragnarok), Nicholas Denton (Glitch), Harvey Zielinski (Starting from...Now) and Gemma Bird Matheson (Neighbours).
"2018 saw a record number of applicants, and the judges agreed the standard was extremely high. Narrowing it down to just 10 was tricky, but following great deliberation and vigorous discussion, we have shortlisted an incredible lineup of Australian actors who reflect the amazing and diverse talent we have here in Australia," said Kirsty McGregor, President of the Casting Guild of Australia and HLS10 Judge.
The finalists were announced live via Instagram by Australian actor and 2018 HLS Ambassador Eka Darville (Jessica Jones, Empire). The recipient will be announced on Thursday, September 20 at the iconic Chateau Marmont

so i get super confused with all of nialls friends lol maybe you can help me out? are deo, willie and josh all related, and if so, how? and are they related to niall / are these the cousins he went to asia with? (i'm like relatively new to the fandom haha)
THE NIALL CREW
Deo - perpetual sidekick.  lowkey harmless. brother of Willie, Martin, Derek.  Went to Asia.
Willie - Niall’s housemate for years, actual adult, probably the most put together. Brother of Deo, Martin, Derek.  Also in Asia w/ Niall.
Derek - the lost Devine.  Married, way older, never shows up for anything.
Martin - Starting to turn up randomly, seems an alright lad.  Probably close to what Willie is like.
Josh Devine - Touring drummer for 1d.  No relation.
Matt Goulet - LA crew.  highkey d bag.
Justin Stirling - See above
Courtney - LA Crew Selena’s bff, close with Goulet and Stir
Raquel - LA Crew Courtney’s bff, see above
Sean “Mully” Mulligan - Irish lad, now lives in LA (possibly in Niall’s house, we have no confirmation).  Constantly seen telling Niall to “Fuck off” in Niall’s insta/snapchat.
Niall “Bressie” Breslin - Niall’s mentor from Mullingar.  Irish national treasure, former rugby play, The Voice Ireland judge, frontman of The Blizzards.  6′6″ of mental heath awareness beauty.  Calls Niall “Chief”.  part of the London Irish Crew (LIC)
Laura Whitmore - MTV presenter/model, effortlessly cool af.  Once rumored to be boning Niall to which she was visibly disgusted and said it would be like shagging her little brother.  Part of the LIC.  Niall once went through her underwear drawer and wore her bra on his head.
Eoghan McDermott - (pronounced Owen) RTE Radio presenter, general insane person, questionable hair choices.  Hilarious and harmless.  Dating possibly the most beautiful woman ever who is a model/doctor because apparently that’s a real thing.  Member of the LIC.

15 Patriotic Movies to Watch on Independence Day
Patton
Played expertly by George C. Scott, “Patton” tells the story of the controversial military general during the World War II era of his career.
Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” is one of the greatest underdog story in film. After Jefferson Smith is selected to replace a senator he heads to Washington to find it a corrupt mess. In order to beat the corruption he launches a physically and mentally taxing filibuster.
Glory
The story of Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) and the infantry men (Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman) of the first all-black volunteer company who struggle fighting the Confederates as well as prejudices from other Union soldiers. The film earned a heap of accolades including three Oscar wins.
Miracle
The true story of Herb Brooks, the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey coach who led his team to victory against a seemingly unbeatable Russian team.
Apollo 13
After suffering internal damage on their way to a moon landing, astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) and Fred Haise (Ken Watanabe) struggle to find a way to get safely back to Earth. The film is human ingenuity and perseverance at its best.
Independence Day
How could this one not be on the list? Aliens attack, blowing up the White House in the process, and the response is for the country to band together to kick some alien ass. Highlights include every scene Will Smith is in and perhaps the greatest motivational speech ever, delivered by President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman).
Air Force One
While not the only take-charge president on the list, Harrison Ford’s President James Marshall may be the most badass. When hijackers take control of Air Force One Marshall, an ex-soldier, takes it upon himself to fight back.
Born on the Fourth of July
The biography of Ron Kovic (Tom Cruise), the story of a man who becomes an anti-war and pro-human rights activist after being paralyzed in the Vietnam War and feeling betrayed by his country.
Team America: World Police
“South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone not only gave us a great satire on American patriotism with their marionette-starring “Team America: World Police,” but also the greatest anthem to scream from the hilltops since the National Anthem. America, f–k yeah!
The Patriot
Mel Gibson stars in this Revolutionary War film about a peaceful farmer pushed into the militia after British soldiers murder his son. Come for the Gibson and Heath Ledger moments, stay for the brilliant bayonet fights.
Yankee Doodle Dandy
A musical about the composer who put together some of America’s most classic tunes like “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “Grand Old Flag.” James Cagney plays musical genius George M. Cohan.
Top Gun
Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer’s Maverick and Iceman have gone down as some of the most iconic characters in film thanks to this movie about fighter pilots competing against one another to be the best.
The Sandlot
“The Sandlot” is essentially America nostalgia in cinematic form. This coming-of-age story about boys and the field they gathered on to play ball struck a chord with audiences across the country.
Rocky IV
For all the American vs. Russia stories that were rampant in the mid-80s, “Rocky IV” may very well be the best. After Ivan Drago kills Apollo Creed in a match, Rocky travels to Russia for a revenge match.
Saving Private Ryan
Opening with a harrowing depiction of D-Day and keeping the gas to the floor for the remainder of the film, this Steven Spielberg-directed, Tom Hanks-starring movie about a group trying to save the last of four brothers is the pinnacle of what war films can be.

09:47
Det nominerade är: Harvey Zielinski, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Ezekiel Simat, Gemma Bird Matheson, Kipan Rothbury, Aaron Glenane, Brenna Harding, Bethany Whitmore, Charmaine Bingwa, Nicholas Denton.
13:40
Nu blir det brottom!! Den 16 September skall jag vara i LA, tills dess vill jag ha mitt körkort!
14:15
Jag kom på en genial pluggteknik. Stå upp och läs. Träna menar du läser.

Re—inc launches art auction featuring Tobin Heath's provoking 'Pixelation' painting
Formed by four USWNT soccer players who want to challenge the status quo.
Last year, four players from the U.S. women’s national soccer team — Megan Rapinoe, Tobin Heath, Meghan Klingenberg and Christen Press — launched a lifestyle brand driven to reimagine the status quo and take control of their own identities. Called re—inc, the company creates capsule collections focused on gender-neutral streetwear apparel that defies convention. Each collection release is accompanied by a piece of original art, which acts as both the inspiration and physical representation of the collection’s theme.
This month, re—inc is holding an art auction featuring an original painting by Tobin Heath created for the brand’s upcoming “Black & White” collection. Between USWNT games and training, Heath began methodically creating a painting, entitled Pixelation, in a small studio in Portland, Oregon. Four full paintings lie underneath the final work, literally and symbolically showing layers of stories, thoughts and ideas. Written in one layer of the work in dripping blue paint is “I don’t understand but I want to.” An expression of the tension between expectations and individuality, Pixelation provokes the viewer to consider their individuality and role within a confined system.
For the BW Art Auction, re—inc partnered with Alternate ROOTS, an art organization supporting the creation and presentation of art rooted in communities of place, tradition or spirit. re—inc will give 17% of all proceeds to fund Alternate ROOTS’ work with artists and cultural organizers that champion social and economic justice.
Bidding begins today on re—inc’s website and will end on March 23.

The injunctions allow officers to monitor the movements and associations connected to the men aged between 18 and 20. It also prevents them from entering parts of Whitmore Reans, Pendeford, Heath Town and the city centre. The men who were served with the injunctions at Birmingham County…
