MISS YOU

miss you is a song with many interpretations, you will see many blogs that say it’s a stunt song but you will also see many that say that isn’t.

in this post i want to explain several interpretations of this song so that you can judge for yourself what it is about.

1) it’s a stunt song

in this case, the interpretation of the song is literal therefore it would speak of a break up. as we know miss you was released in 2017, the same year eleanor returned with louis so it would fit with the narrative.

louis wrote that song while they were separated and now that they are together he doesn’t want to sing it anymore because that would bring back bad memories, it fits perfectly right?

however the real reason why he doesn’t want to sing it would be because it doesn’t represent him.

2) talks about the closet

in this option the song is not interpreted literally but in a more metaphorical way and it is thought that the structure of the song is to fit into the elounor narrative but the meaning is different.

is this option there is a relation with habit, always you and too young so i recommend reading this post first.

“is it my imagination? is it something that i’m taking? all the smiles that i’m faking “everything is great everything is fucking great” going out every weekend staring at the stars on the ceiling hollywood friends, gotta see them such a good time i believe it this time”

first he talks about how he isn’t happy in that situation, he says that he fake his smiles and that he shows himself in front of everyone as if everything is fine, he clearly talks about how he shows himself in front of the public. then he talks about his “friends” who tell him that he has to go out and is “such a good time”. those “friends” are actually a metaphor for the people who put him in the closet. the people who put him in the closet (as mentioned in too young) told him that he would be better without harry and that they wouldn’t last, that’s why they were happy and they told him that while he is away from him, it would be his best moment and as he mentions in too young, at one point he believed that story that’s why he said “i believe it this time”

“tuesday night glazed over eyes just one more pint or five does it even matter anyway?”

“we’re dancing on tables and i’m off my face with all of my people and it couldn’t get better they say we’re singing ‘til last call and it’s all out of tune should be laughing, but there’s something wrong and it hits me when the lights go on shit, maybe i miss you”

after the fight he tried to drown his problems in alcohol, “should be laughing but is something wrong” as he believed the story, he thought that being mad with harry should be happier, but he loves him and that is not the case, he missed him.

“just like that and i’m sober i’m asking myself, “is it over?” maybe i was lying when i told you “everything is great everything is fucking great” and all of these thoughts and the feelings cheers to that if you don’t need them i’ve been checking my phone all evening such a good time i believe it this time”

he hides and lies about how he feels, which leads to more fights. he waits to be able to talk to him and fix things (with “checking my phone” he doesn’t mean the literal phone but at the moment of talking).

“now i’m asking my friends how to say, “i’m sorry” they say, “lad, give it time, there’s no need to worry” and we can’t even be on the phone now and i can’t even be with you alone now oh, how shit changes we were in love, now we’re strangers when i feel it coming up, i just throw it all away get another two shots ‘cause it doesn’t matter anyway”

first he mentions his “friends” again, he regrets but his “friends” want to stop him from solving things. then he talks about how difficult it’s to fix things completely because between the fact that their relationship was in a tense stage and they couldn’t even look at each other, everything is worse. the phrase that most identifies the iron closet is “now we are strangers” because it talks about how publicly they had to act like strangers and finally it talks about how they drown his problems in alcohol again.

in this case louis doesn’t want to sing the song because it brings back bad memories or because he just doesn’t want to.

3) talks about the party boy image

in this option it’s also interpreted metaphorically (although more literal than the previous one) and with a structure that serves to fit in with the elounor narrative.

this option doesn’t need much explanation, the whole song talks about partying and missing someone. that “someone” would be the louis of the past. (there are some lyrics that don’t fit 100% such as “and i can’t even be with you alone now” or the “we were in love now we're strangers”).

i want to clarify that option 2 and 3 are just as valid as 1 (and just as valid as other interpretations), that there are people who interpret it in a more metaphorical way isn’t wrong. artists often want to write one thing but have to make it fit with another because they are forced to do so, so it would be no surprise if this is the case.

finally i want to say that no interpretation is right or wrong, just because someone thinks differently from you doesn’t make your opinion less valid. it doesn’t matter if you see big accounts with a different opinion than yours, that you have it doesn’t mean that you are wrong or that you are “less larrie” for it, draw your own conclusions, don’t repeat without thinking what the rest says.

en este post quiero explicar varias interpretaciones de esta canción para que ustedes juzguen por ustedes mismos de que se trata.

1) es una stunt song

en este caso, la interpretación de la canción es literal por ende hablaría de una ruptura. como sabemos miss you fue lanzada en 2017, el mismo año que eleanor volvió con louis por lo que encajaría con la narrativa.

louis escribió esa canción mientras estaban separados y ahora que estan juntos no la quiere cantar mas porque eso les traería malos recuerdos, encaja perfecto no?

sin embargo la verdadera razon por la que no la quiere cantar sería porque no lo representa.

2) habla del closet

en esta opción la canción no es interpretada literal sino de manera mas metafórica y se piensa que la estructura de la canción es para encajar en la narrativa elounor pero el significado es otro.

es esta opción hay una relación con habit, always you y too young así que recomiendo leer este post primero.

en esta opción también se interpreta de forma metafórica (aunque mas literal que la anterior) y con una estructura que sirve para encajar con la narrativa elounor.

la verdad esta opción no necesita mucha explicación, toda la canción habla sobre estar de fiesta y extrañando a alguien. ese “alguien” sería el louis del pasado. (hay algunos lyrics que no encajan al 100% como por ej “and i cant even be with you alone now” o el “we were in love now we’re strangers”).

quiero aclarar que la opción 2 y 3 son igual de válidas que la 1 (e igual de validas que otras interpretaciones), que haya gente que la interprete de manera mas metaforiaca no esta mal. los artistas muchas veces quieren escribir una cosa pero lo tienen que hacer encajar con otra porque los obligan asi que no sería ninguna sorpresa que ese sea el caso.

por último quiero decir que ninguna interpretación esta bien o mal, porque alguien piense distinto a vos no hace tu opinión menos válida. no importa si ves a cuentas grandes con otra opinión distinta a la tuya, que la tengas no significa que estes mal o que seas “menos larrie” por ello, saca tus propias conclusiones, no repitas sin pensar lo que dice el resto.

Part 1: Capital Letters.

Big, BIG thanks to @pchynana for the suggestion. The idea they sent was incredible! They are a true ray of sunshine; a literal angel who is the sweetest ever and so easy to talk to! Show them some love, babies!

Run-through: Heartbroken, betrayed and used, you managed to find a way to escape your heartless boss. Little did you know, that this act of yours would affect the arrogant beast in ways he couldn’t fathom; and may even lead him down the path of guilt?

Themes: SMUT, slight non/con elements, language, angst

A/N: Since none of you were having any of my sadistic fuckery, here’s another part of Capital Letters. Hope you like it! Also, is this turning into yet another series?!?!

Two weeks later, a new you surfaced.

Two weeks of seeing his smug face, and being his little helper; the torture was finally over. Two weeks later, you slapped your resignation letter on his dark, wooden desk – almost as dark as his heart, and walked out of his office without letting him have the last word.

You didn’t even bother to see his face. Which, again, was probably amused and glad that you were finally leaving.

You said your goodbyes to Peggy and walked out of the wretched office. You didn’t even turn around to spare it one last glance.

Finding another job after that was a little bit difficult. Almost every interviewer pried to know why you had left your previous job. Given he was a rather well-known and respected persona, a damn good excuse was needed.

You always made up some lie about how the distance affected your life and how you believed that your wage was insufficient.

You were applying for jobs relentlessly, giving out CVs and tried online applications like a mad woman. And finally one day, you received a letter from the team who worked for the one and only, Thor Odinson.

Your eyes widened as you gradually took in each and every word they had written; black on white – an excitement formed in you.

Not only was Thor Odinson one of the best adventure and romance writers out there, but he was also the biggest competition to J.B Barnes.

People loved Thor Odinson, it’s just that he was always seconds best to J.B Barnes.

A sinister smirk formed on your face; guess life wasn’t planning on treating you like shit forever.

You had applied for the position of a personal assistant. And the letter in your hand mentioned that you had been accepted for it.

You placed the carefully folded letter on your kitchen counter, and stared at the paper in joy and disbelief.

You were now, officially, Thor Odinson’s PA?!

Working for Mr. Odinson was a pure delight. He was the complete opposite of the previous a-hole you worked for.

Thor was jovial, vibrant and gentle. The first time you walked into his office; you were intimidated by the man.

His short brown hair, his muscular body, his voice – they all made you feel so small. He had heterochromia and his eyes were the most striking and the most intimidating part of him.

But as you worked for him and formed a rather pleasant relationship with your new boss; you realized that he was a gentle giant. He was always so polite, and truly cared about those who worked with him.

You made new friends at your new work place; two lovely ladies named Wanda and Natasha. They were vibrant beings as well.

You were content with what you had. You were much more confident, and a month and a half later – you were over Bucky.

You couldn’t forget him entirely, but he was like a bad dream. And the thought of him didn’t make you cry anymore, but every once in a while, when his name popped up on your social media, or any magazine; a void formed at the pit of your stomach.

Yet, you were certain that if you ever saw him, you’d be able to walk past him like he was just another stranger.

And just like always, whenever you made any bold claims; life put you to test.

Guilt.

Guilt was all he felt when the sound of the letter hitting his desk was heard. You didn’t even look at him, but he caught the pain on your face.

A pain he caused. A pain he was, heartlessly, responsible for.

He accepted the resignation, it was the least he could do.

Bucky knew what he did was wrong; immoral even. He had used you like a pawn in a game. He had toyed with you in the most selfish ways possible.

The guilt consumed him.

However, on some days, his ego got the best of him.

I’m J.B Barnes, I can do whatever I want.

He’d tell himself to fire up his dangerous ego.

Yet, when he heard the news that you were now working with Odinson – a wave of guilt and anger washed over him.

He hadn’t realized that he was keeping track of where you were. He wasn’t stalking you or anything, he just asked his team to keep an eye out of where you went next. And being his loyal pets, they did.

They informed him that you were now working for Odinson, as his personal assistant.

He pretended that the news didn’t affect him. He pretended not to care about the fact that the woman he used for selfish purposes was now rubbing it in his face, and was also working for his biggest competition. He pretended that none of it affected him.

But it did.

A strange feeling took over him the first time he accidentally ended up at the same restaurant where you and your new boss were having lunch along with another, red head. A colleague maybe?

A weird, unfamiliar feeling washed over him as he watched how you laughed at something Thor Odinson said.

An itch, a yearning probably; or perhaps was it an unhealthy infatuation?

He shouldn’t care. He told himself so over and over again.

Yet he found that he stayed there, unmoving, at the back of the spacious room, and didn’t leave until you did.

He noticed some changes in you. Was it your hair, was it shorter or longer? Was it your face, or the red lip you wouldn’t sport when you worked in his office?

Why did he care? You were just- just another girl he had fucked.

Right?

He couldn’t believe how comfortable you were around Thor. You looked happier, you were glowing.

And he stroked his ego as he smirked, thinking about how the glow you had on right now was still no match to the one you had right after he had fucked you.

A strange fire formed inside him as he noticed the way Thor was looking at you, even in the presence of the other woman. He looked at you like you were the finest piece of art ever made. He looked at you with . . . pride?

Thor let his gaze roam over you. He looked enamored – by you.

But then, Bucky realized that he was looking at you the same way. So, he lowered his eyes back to the screen of his phone - ashamed. Your laughter rang in his ear and for a second, just for a split second, he wished that he was the one to make you laugh like that instead.

Having lunch with Thor and Natasha soon became a habit. Outside work, your boss was slightly more open. He was funnier and he could make you laugh like no one else.

However, each day, you had to deal with Nat’s daily dose of teasing – telling you how Thor “definitely has a crush on you.”

And every day, as a ritual, you had to tell her that “It’s nothing like that.”

She’d roll her eyes at you, mumbling about how it was all too obvious.

You could see why people would think that you and your boss were having a thing. You both spent all your time at work together, behind closed doors and wherever he went, you went with him.

He assigned a driver to pick you up in the morning and to drop you home in the evening because he’s nice like that.

From a third point of view, it could be seen as something it is not.

Truth is, you didn’t want it to be more. You knew better than to get involved with your boss given your past experiences. You knew Thor was nothing like Bucky, but you were still very cautious of beautiful, powerful men who made you weak in your knees.

Thor’s driver dropped you off at your apartment building and you thanked him, and rushed inside. As soon as you walked out of the elevator, and onto your floor; you couldn’t help but recognize the smell which lingered in the air.

Intense and fresh, it resembled the cologne of someone you knew. And despised at the same time.

Cautiously, you walked towards your apartment door and mentally cursed as the scent had gotten heavier in the air.

If he was here, you would lose your shit.

You rapidly unlocked your door and checked your watch in the process, it was quarter to nine. Dinner with Thor and Natasha was quickly becoming a thing as well.

It was rather late, he wouldn’t be here, would he?

You walked into your own home with pure terror in your eyes. From the front door, you could see the living area perfectly, and the kitchen partly.

And there was no sign of an arrogant asshole. Yet, as weird as it sounds, you could smell his cologne in the air. Faint and lingering, it was definitely there. Unless, of course, you had collapsed into madness.

You dropped your keys on the coffee table, and removed your heels. You stood in the middle of the living room and looked around – paranoid.

The night was silent, and the only thing you could hear was your shallow breaths.

You made your way into your bedroom, and as if life needed another way to kick you in the face – there he was, in all his glory, sitting on your couch, in your room, in your apartment.

Bucky had found a way of making a comeback in your life.

He looked up at you, a smug look on his face; mocking the fact that you believed you had gotten rid of him.

“I’m gonna say this once, get the fuck out or I’m calling security,” you threw your purse on the bed and faced Bucky fearlessly.

He scoffed.

“First of all, your security is terrible. All I had to do was tell them I am your boyfriend, and they let me in with ease. Second, watch that tone. That’s no way of talking to your boss now, is it?” he sassed.

Bucky stood up from the red couch and walked towards you. He looked just a powerful as the last time you saw him.

Dark grey suit, black satin tie, his hair was up in a bun, unshaved yet well maintained beard

He was hoping you would take a few steps back, but you didn’t. Much to his surprise, you stood right where you are and stared into his blue eyes with no emotion. Other than annoyance.

“You’re not my boss. You’re invading my space, just- just leave,” you spoke calmly, not wanting to ruin your perfectly fine mood.

He smirked as he walked towards you, his eyes very briefly flicking to your king-sized bed then back at you.

You gulped.

He wouldn’t touch you, would he?

Would you let him?

He approached you slowly, and stopped when he stood right in front of you.

“You really want me to? I could stay, and remind you how good it felt when you were under me, moaning and squirming until you begged me to stop. Something tells me you would prefer that,” he spoke, extending his hand out and tracing a line from your jaw to your collar bones.

His fingers were soon replaced by his lips as he pulled you into him, kissing your skin while mumbling what he intended to do to your body.

You wanted to push him away, and show him the way out and make sure he never comes back. But his explicit words had you captivated. And no matter how much you tried to resist, both you and him knew that you would give into his touch just as easily as the first time.

You were ashamed, but also very aroused simply by thinking about what it felt like the last time he touched you.

You were very well aware of the way he used you, and how much of a selfish asshole he was; yet you couldn’t fight it.

“Your dress looks nice, you got all dressed up for him? You like him, huh? Just remember one thing babe, Thor can never make you feel the way I do, and if you let him touch you I swear to God I wi-,”

“How the fuck do you know all that? Are you spying on me, you sick fuck? Jesus, get the fuck out! Now!” you yelled, pushing him away.

And when you did so, you could visibly see something flipped inside him like a switch. He looked more feral, more determined.

Without another word said, he grabbed your arm and threw you to the bed which wasn’t too far away, so you fell perfectly in the middle of it.

Bucky climbed on top of you and adjusted your body so your head laid on your pillow as he straddled you.

You tried pushing him of you but he was stronger and your attempts were in vain.

“Bucky!” you shouted again and he smirked, darkly.

“Oh you’ll scream my name all right, just give me a second,” he mumbled as he loosened his tie, took it off and tied it around your wrists.

He then secured your bounded hands to the headboard.

You hadn’t realized that you had stopped struggling until you felt him tightening the knot around your wrists.

You just laid there, under him, breathing heavily while he undid the buttons of his shirt then proceeded to undress you.

He undid your pants and then unbuttoned your white blouse. Bucky then realized how much he preferred you in white. So pure, and innocent; just waiting for him to take you and mark you as his own.

He unclasped your nude, strapless bra and lifted it off your body, then dragged your matching thong down your legs.

In less than a minute, you were naked under him. He allowed his hungry eyes to roam all over your bare body as he grew more and more smitten by each passing second.

He straddled your thighs and bent down to kiss your lips. As soon as his lips touched yours; you couldn’t fight it anymore; your mouth refused to listen to your pleas and invited him in like a traitor.

His tongue slipped into your mouth and his hands each took your breasts; toying with them and earning soft moans out of you.

The sounds you made fueled his lust like no other woman could. After you, he had quite a lot of women in his bed, but none satiated his hunger quite like you did. Perhaps that’s why he quickly became obsessed with you; finding out where you are at all times, finding ways to enter your home and finally having you under him.

“Bucky . . .,” you had meant for it to sound like a warning, yet it turned out like a moan as he tugged on your bottom lip.

“I’m right here,” he whispered against your skin as he nibbled on it mercilessly, ignoring your pleas and groans; he was determined to make you surrender.

He kissed his way down your body, peppering your skin with his feathery touches. He kissed around your breasts, down your stomach and around your belly button.

He placed soft kisses on each of your hip bones which caused you to tug on the restrains around your hand as your eyes rolled back for a moment.

“Seems like you missed me, babygirl,” he whispered right above your wet core, his warm breath fanning against your folds; making you lightly thrust your hips upwards.

He chuckled.

You opened your eyes and looked down your body. He had left a trail of wet kissed along your skin, and at the end of it, was him – kneeling at your feet, mouth dangerously close to your entrance and eyes looking up at you in hunger.

His large hands wrapped around your thighs and he separated your legs further apart, settling in between them; eyes clouded with mania.

You watched him intently, his eyes never leaving yours – almost challenging as he placed his mouth against the most sensitive part of you. His tongue slipped inside your folds and he licked a thick stripe from your entrance to your clit, the tip of his tongue lingering at your bundle of nerves.

Involuntarily, a loud moan escaped your mouth and your back arched off the bed. Seeing your reaction, he hooked his hands around your thighs and secured you in place; pinned to the bed and against his skilled mouth.

Bucky closed his eyes as he relished the taste of you, his tongue teasing your entrance and his beard scratching the soft skin of your inner thighs as your legs wrapped around his head, cradling him as he lapped up your arousal.

You focused your vision back on him; his beard and lips drenched with your arousal, the lower half of his face hidden from you as he dove deeper into you with each stroke of his tongue.

You felt the pressure building at your abdomen, and you knew you were so close to your release. Surprisingly, he was on his way to grant you your release, if your phone hadn’t rang.

Your groaned; both at the sound of your phone and at the feeling of him lifting his mouth off of you. He panted as he rose off you for a brief second. He looked at your face, his appetite still not satiated, and the sight of his bread dripping with your arousal was sinful enough to make you blush instantly. A few strands of hair fell out of his messy bun and he looked, indeed, feral and cocky and arrogant – yet majestic.

The kind that made you want to jump on him and kick him out at the same time.

The two of you looked towards your purse which was at the end of the bed, in annoyance. Your phone rang incessantly inside of it.

Groaning in frustration, Bucky reached over and grabbed your black purse. He opened it, and fished out your phone, and shamelessly checked who the caller was before you even had the chance to protest.

His jaw ticked as he studied the screen.

“Why the fuck is he calling so late at night?” he showed you the screen and questioned.

“None of your business, and untie me right now, that’s my boss, he probably needs something,” you spoke as the name ‘Thor Odinson’ flashed on the screen.

Bucky smirked. The phone rang, while a devious plan formed in his mind.

He slid his thumb across the screen and immediately tapped on the speaker icon. And Thor’s voice could immediately be heard.

The situation was so messy it gave you a headache. You were tied to bed, with your ex-boss and the man you loathe so much straddling your naked body while your current boss called you to probably talk about something work related.

Fuck.

“Hello? Y/N? Are you alright, what took you so long? Are you okay?” Thor’s concern could be heard and it was something Bucky didn’t like.

He placed the phone right next to your head and got back to kissing your body. His actions shocked you for a moment.

“Yeah, I- uh, I’m good, I just- Oh fuck!” you swore as Bucky spread your legs even further and attached his mouth to your core in no time. His tongue poked your entrance and you felt like you were slowly losing your mind.

And you had to desperately hold on to your sanity because you still were on call with your boss.

“Is everything alright, Y/N? It sounded like you were in pain, should I come over, are you sure you’re okay?” Thor asked again through the phone as Bucky licked lazily around your clit, flicking the little bud with the tip of his tongue.

You bit on your bottom lip, careful as to not let out a moan.

Damn you, Barnes!

“N-no, I’m good. I’m okay,” you panted. “Is there anything you needed, Mr. O- oh holy shit!” you couldn’t hold back the moan as Bucky slipped one finger through your entrance.

Bucky smirked and kissed the glistening skin along your wet folds. You tried scooting away from him but his grip around your thighs was very firm.

“Y/N, a-are you with someone at the moment?” Thor asked, and the hint of confusion and hurt was hard to ignore in his voice which came through the phone.

At his question, Bucky slipped another finger into your entrance and curled his fingers inside of you; earning a quiet, breathy moan out of you.

You blushed at Thor’s question.

“What? No, no I’m just, I stubbed my toe and I- I fell. Sorry for swearing, that wasn’t at you, I’m- what is it you need, sir?” you asked.

The degree to which this situation was unethical and immoral was blowing your mind.

Bucky growled when he heard how you addressed Thor. You never called him ‘sir’. Why?

He placed his tongue back into your folds, stroking your walls with his fingers at the same time. He applied just the slightest bit of suction on your sensitive bud and your bucked your hips into him; panting and turning your face as far away as you possible could from the phone.

You tugged on the restrains at your wrists again, and desperately failed at releasing your hands.

You closed your eyes as your body betrayed you and allowed the pleasure to wash over you.

“I, uh, yeah I’ve been wanting to ask if you probably wanted to join me for dinner tomorrow. Just to celebrate the success of our recent publishing. No pressure, of course, I understand if you-,”

Bucky pinched your skin as soon as Thor’s suggestion was heard by both of you. He lifted his mouth off you and hovered above your squirming body. Slowly, he removed his fingers from your entrance and forced them through your already parted lips.

He pumped his fingers into your mouth, coated with your own arousal, and licked along your jaw and finally kissed underneath your ear.

“Answer him,” he taunted in your ear, low enough for you to hear him, but Thor not to. He knew damn well you couldn’t speak with his fingers in your mouth.

You moved your head around, hoping he would remove his fingers from your mouth. And eventually he did, and left you panting.

“I- uh, s-sure. Of course, I’ll be there, sir,” you replied, eyes closing as Bucky nibbled on the skin at your collar bone. His beard scratched your skin and you were ashamed to admit that despite all that happened, you still liked the feeling of it.

He growled against your skin again as you agreed.

“Okay, alright. See you tomorrow then, Y/N. Good night,” Thor spoke and much to your relief, he ended the call.

Now you only had one man to deal with. The one teasing you.

Bucky’s hand slipped in between your legs again, and he didn’t hesitate before slipping his fingers back in your entrance.

You moved your hips as to meet each thrust of his fingers, and chased your orgasm quickly because he had teased you enough.

You were on the edge, and with a couple more strokes of his fingers against your walls, you came, hard. Gushing at his hand while your walls clenched around his fingers; you moaned his name out loud again. And at the sound of it, his pants tightened even more.

He groaned as he placed his mouth back on yours. He untied your hands and threw the tie somewhere on the bedroom floor.

You spoke, kissing underneath his ear. He shuddered, and you figured that it probably was his sweet spot.

Bucky groaned, but remained silent.

“You’re tempting, Mr. Barnes, very tempting. But enough is enough, you don’t get to tell me what to do,” you spoke again, moving your hips against him just the slightest bit.

You could feel his cock twitching under you. And you loved it.

“You were really good to me today Bucky, but I’m gonna need you to get the fuck out before I call the cops and ruin your reputation forever, understand?” you whispered, allowing your lips to linger around his weak spot before lifting off of him.

You didn’t care about the fact that your breasts were completely exposed, or that he wouldn’t even hide the fact that he was hard under you. You let go of his hands and the immediately held you at your waist, preventing you from moving away from him.

“Y/N, I’m s-,”

“Get out. Now,” you left no room for negotiation. You got off him completely and got out of bed. He sat up immediately and tried reaching out but you moved away from.

He couldn’t bear the sight of you, naked yet unreachable.

Bucky knew he could’ve easily silenced you, and have his way with you whether you were completely willing or not. But he had fucked up already, and he needed to win you back – if possible.

Making his way out of your apartment building and getting into the driver’s seat of his car, Bucky made up his mind.

You were his. And he wasn’t going to let Thor take you away from him.

On the other side, Thor smiled as he ended the call; hearing that you had agreed to have dinner with him the next day. Perhaps this would be the first of many dates.

He had been enamored since day one. Ever since you walked into his life with your pretty face, your body which made him stutter, your calming voice and your easy-going manner; he was falling for you hard and fast.

Meanwhile you were in your room, sat on the floor, naked and deep in thoughts. Why did you let him touch you again?

And most importantly, why did you like it?

Your gaze instinctively flew to your bedside table. Bucky’s recent book was still there, and on top of it was Thor’s recent book as well.

Bucky Barnes brought out the animal in you. While Thor made you feel safe.

A choice was to be made.

Would you make the wise one?

See, this is where I relate to her the most. I totally understand that feeling of not wanting to be yourself, and finding that escape through being someone else, even if it’s just temporary. I mean, it’s not just a cosplay thing either, though that allows you to do it on a appearance level on top of everything else, but books? Video games? Roleplaying? It’s all about transporting yourself into someone else’s life - often, someone you wish you were. And with that said...

(I did talk about who I thought could be the mastermind here when I asked and though I’m not that much stronger on the subject than I was before, I’m not less, either.)

I’m not going to go into it hardcore here, but I wanted to add a secondary theme of ‘escapism’ along with the ‘truth and lies’ one I mentioned back in that ask. And when choosing a mastermind/final ‘boss’ for a game, especially critical in one where storytelling is a huge part of the game itself, choosing someone that encapsulates the game thematically is important. In fact - look at that. Way back in Chapter 2 she was the one who brought up escapism:

I just looked up Mikazuki and is she referring to the Mikazuki from Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS? I guess that makes sense, considering Genos and OP were being released around the time the game was being developed/released, and it looks like this one was too! You have some surprisingly sci-fi interests huh, Tsumugi?

PAX OMEGATHON 2017: The Hidden Sports Movie, PART ONE

My buddy John played video games, stuff happens!

So the Penny Arcade Expo, or PAX has this event called the omegathon. It consists of 20 players, 18 of which applied and got accepted, one person from the crowd at the first event selected by playing some kind of random game with the hosts. The final contestant is the runner up from the previous year, oddly enough this was the third year they had competed as the number 2 champion. He wore a golden crown and came off as extremely douchey and went by the handle “Mighty.” Another competitor had come in 2nd about a decade ago, but was unable to challenge in the following year due to work issues, Vader had asked for another shot.

My buddy John, Wild Chicken or as he is known in other lands, Pollo Savage, wrote a short story in his application and put down, “if you want to find out how it ends, accept my application.” He was accepted and given a schedule of games he’d have to play. Darren and I came along to cheer him on.

Round 1: Scattergories

Round 2: Mario Kart 8

Round 3: Guillotine

Round 4: Robo Recall

Round 5: Wrestlemania 2000

Final Round: ???

For the first three rounds the omeganauts are evenly divided into 4 groups and the lowest scoring omeganaut is eliminated. So scoring high is an important strategy but so is sabotaging whomever you’d think would be a strong competitor. John trained long and hard but confessed that he doubted he’d get past round 4 since he didn’t have a VR rig to train with. Most of the competition was very pleasant and the atmosphere friendly, Mighty got on a lot of people’s nerves though.

The first round was Scattergories the intense audience scrutiny, knowing it was being streamed and the high stakes pressure broke some people who barely managed to come up with any answers and choked on their words when asked to answer aloud. John, being an English major, fucking crushed it.

“Good job John, who you gonna play as in Mario Kart 8.”

“I’m gonna go with my boy Yoshi of course!”

“What a shame, you’ll lose if anyone plays as Wario, because Wario always wins.”

John narrowed his eyes and glared at me, every one of our past Mario kart ran through his mind. He’d never beaten Wario when I played him... except in Smash, man Smash rules.

So we sat down near the screens and the contestants were handed their controllers, there’s a slight hitch to omegathon games. Occasionally they throw curve balls with the gear, such as making people play with power gloves, or in this case individual joy cons instead of pro controllers.

As a result the first game had something truly horrifying happen. Two people selected identical characters and one of them drove into a wall for two minutes. The audience screamed and screamed but they were so intent on the game that they didn’t realize what was wrong. They were practically crying in frustration but in the end they were eliminated.

“Shit we should’ve thought of signals or something man!” Darren said to me.

“Hey, John saw it, he ain’t gonna do that, he’ll figure it out, that Yoshi is gonna come out on top.”

Now those joy cons are really hard to handle which is why apparently nobody in John’s group managed to select the character they wanted, except the three time returning penultimate champion Mighty who smugged it up with his Waluigi. Mighty came in first in the first two races while we desperately tried to figure out who John was playing as. Mighty realized that with his previous victories he couldn’t be eliminated so he started racing backwards and sabotaging other players for fun in the final round. It turned out John needed to come in first and without Mighty cutting loose, he would’ve been eliminated.

Guillotine is a french revolution card game where you gain and lose points based on who you execute, using cards to manipulate execution order. It was brutal, especially the round where the persona cosplaying mother realized everyone in her group was ganging up on her to eliminate her. John played well and made it through unscathed with a fine collection of heads.

Robo Recall’s round only had 8 omeganauts left, four would leave. Fortunately the VR game John couldn’t train at was present at PAX and he managed to get in 20 minutes with their demo and was looking up strategies with his phone right up to going up and playing it. Competition was fierce and the gap in skill was astounding. Some Vader got through the tutorial by throwing their guns through targets, I watched one guy, Sly, juggle his VR guns between kills and rack up a ridiculous amount of points. With each competitor I calculated how many John could lose to and make it to the final round.

On the last competitor I said to Darren, “If this guy beats John’s score, he’s out.”

Darren grimly nodded.

Then the guy got one of the lowest scores of the round, thank god. The fourth round competitors would be, John, the gun juggler Sly, the omegathon veteran returning for one last shot at glory Vader and the crown wearing 3 time penultimate champion Mighty. Mighty was the one we all pegged as being the biggest threat.

“I’m honestly surprised I made it this far.” John said to us after the match.

“Yeah it’s great John!”

“No guys, I really didn’t think I’d make it this far so I didn’t put much effort into tracking down wrestlemania 2000″

“...John have-”

“I have never fucking played wrestlemania 2000 guys.”

“...god damn it John.” Darren said shaking his head.

Who’s the Bad Guy Now?

While I haven’t finished the last episode yet, My Next life as a Villianess has been quite the fun ride. It’s funny, thoughtful, and probably has one of the best protagonist of a harem anime since The Fruit of Grisaia’s Yuuji Kazami. This is definitely definitely an anime I can recommend to anyone, which is a refreshing thing to say since the majority of anime I like tends to be either absolute fanservice garbage like Cross Ange, extremely genres like MagiPro and Granbelm, or something offensively generic and uninspired like Assassin’s Pride.

Along with that, I can say that this anime is a refreshing take on both harem and otome tropes. Making our protagonist's obliviousness to her harem’s affection more comedic than frustrating while still giving her the charisma needed to actually get that affection in the first place. I could honestly do a whole Rambling on how well this all works together.

But I’m not going to do that.

See, the whole ‘Villainess’ trend has been going on in Japanese manga, Korean Manhwa, and Chinese Webcomics for some time now, at least a year from my memory. I’ve been meaning to talk about some of these manga and this genre as a whole for a while now, but I’ve never really found the drive until now. So I wanted to take a bit of time to discuss a few of these stories and series in a way similar to my old Anime Updates, a general summary of the story and my overall views of each while hitting a point or two in a few paragraphs.

However, before I talk about the other manga and manhua...

Disclaimer

All of series I’m going to be talking about are, to my knowledge, not released or translated in the west officially. Most of these are fan translations by folks wanting to spread the respective series. However, with that said these are still technically pirated media. A lot of the translation groups have even asked to not post pictures of their translations on social media sites, specifically Instagram, as they could possibly face some form of legal action from the author. As such, I won’t be post too many pictures of what’s available save for official, untranslated art if I can.

With that said...

Let’s start with the big one. This is the main thing I wanted to talk about. What it Takes to be a Villainess or The Justice of Villainous Woman is a pretty interesting take on both Villain and Isekai tropes. The story focuses on Yu(?) Hwayoeng, a typical 23-year-old Korean woman who enjoys soap operas, racy novels, and being with her boyfriend. Well, at least until her boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend and she accidentally slipped into a river and died, only to be reborn in the body of a Satiana(?) Altizer Cailon(?), a noblewoman with the reputation of a bratty villainess. Through several events, she learns she’s a Regina, a canidate for the next empress of the empire. However, Satiana’s awful reputation as a villainess competing with the saintly reputation of her opponent Irene, who is already the lover of the current prince and next emperor. With enemies at every corner and a prince she knows nothing about save for his cold demeanor toward her, Satiana, or commonly called Satie, must find away to become Empress despite her foul reputation and hostile political environment.

Now, despite Satie being a ‘villainess’, the story sets it so that she’s already condemned and somewhat hated among noble society. This isn’t a tale of how a villainess avoids a bad end, but how someone goes from an underdog brat to a proper member of high society and cares for the people she rules under. Despite the premise, this isn’t much of a romance of Satie winning over the cold prince, but Satie working both with and against the system to make policies and arrangement work in her favor with the little tools she has. Her first obstacle isn’t softening the cold prince, it’s figuring out how to get maids and secretaries to help her run affairs despite her superiors hindering her from the most basic of rights as a noblewoman. She has to use both the memories borrowed from the original Satie and her memories from her past life to help her get through the tangled web of political intrigue.

Speaking of which.

Satie Never Forgets

Like I said, the main interest for me in this is the twist on several Villain and Isekai tropes. One of which is that Satie never forgets her time as Yu or her certain circumstance. She never forgets that she died after soon being the victim of an affair, or that she, as Yu, was a controversial figure in her university as someone that spoke out against injustice and problems despite decorum saying otherwise. The former keeps her from pursuing the prince despite his advances, the latter keeps her from letting people’s wrongdoings go unannounced, much to her own detriment at times. She never forgets that she more or less stole the body she’s in, so tries her best as Regina to do her new family right. And after about 30-ish chapters she breaks from her Villainess reputation and persona and can start handling things properly. It becomes less of an Isekai or romance story and more of a political drama with Isekai and Romance elements in it. The best parts of this series is when Satie is planning her next move through all the political wrangling, or when she uses knowledge from her previous life to improve the lives of others. Not just that she’s from a modern era, but that she was also a former babysitter for her family, or had a natural knack for flirting and acting to begin with. She smart and can think on her feet.

However... that said, I have one glaring issue with this series.

Romance and Morality

As of me writing this we’re at about chapter 92. Within the more recent chapters they’ve finally explained things from the Prince’s prospective as to why he’s so cold and why he chose Irene as a lover. And while I find that side interesting and the story takes advantage of us seeing his side of things for future plot events, I feel like the story wants us to question who is in the right.

This... bugs me a little.

While I don’t mind moral ambiguity in my media this series has been trying very hard to get us to root for Satie for over 90 chapters, successfully might I add. She’s used her villainess reputation when she needed to, she’s punished wrongdoers, treated well those who have deserved it, and while the prince has slowly softened his stance on her she’s still hesitant to approach him, as he already has a lover. Through the Prince’s chapters we learn his and Irene’s relationship is more political than romantic and that Irene isn’t the kind saint she makes herself out to be. However, I feel like this moral fracturing is more annoying than interesting. Granted, this is to set up some bigger drama in later chapters and the chance to see other perspectives is nice, but... eh, your mileage may very. For what it’s worth, it’s building up to some interesting twists in the next arc or two, but the mystery of who is in the right by what means feels annoying when Satie’s been walking that tightrope for the last fifty-ish chapters.

Other Critiques

Just my general critique all of the series you’ll see here, but translations have slowed down as of me typing this essay. The last one was about 2-ish months ago, at least on the site I use for this specific story. The translations can’t really get a good read on how to properly spell Satie’s name either, if the (?) didn’t clue you in. Nothing deal breaking, but an annoy tick nonetheless.

Anyway, only the next story!

The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass takes a different, if still common turn for these Villainess stories. Aria Roscente is the daughter of a prostitute that soon became a noble due to her mother marrying into nobility. She lived a lavish life and was quite arrogant as she grew up, but was slowly manipulated in her ignorance by several parties, the most egregious being her sister Mielle who pushed Aria into the role of villainess while making herself seem like a saint. And due to those machinations she was executed. With her last dying wish being for a second chance she’s granted that chance by traveling back in time to around her childhood through a magical hourglass, giving her the perfect change to lay the seeds of her revenge against all those who conned her.

Now, time travel in these Villainess stories isn’t new, but I like this one’s take on it. Aria has a semi-manipulate time in the more recent chapters as of my writing this, and she uses them to her advantage in other to get revenge on those who wronged her. With her knowledge of future events she can make relationships of lower class individuals who will have higher stature in years to come. She can have almost prophetic knowledge of future disasters to come so she can be seen as a hero for preventing or preparing for them. And she can curb an future opponent’s advancements into high society. However... she’s stunted by thae fact that her child self won’t be taken too seriously and that Aria herself only has a passing idea of events to come, as her past arrogance made her rather flippant toward important court events.

But there’s one more issue I have with this story...

Aria is an Asshole

This might be a frequent criticism I have for a lot of future stories and series I want to cover, but to focus this on Aria for this, she is an almost cartoonishly evil character at times no real reason. Unlike like Satie who uses her bad reputation and evil persona strategically to sway opinions and weave the political landscape of the empire, Aria is an outright bastard out to tear down those that stand in her way as she manipulates things to her advantage and slowly ruins the lives of those who wronged her in the past. While we’re told this revenge is for deeds done in her past life, the people she targets are currently blameless in the new timeline. And the one that supposed ruined her life, her sister, may in fact be manipulated by other parties to see Aria’s undoing. However, Aria doesn’t care about this and proceeds to emotionally torture her younger sister throughout the story, relishing in her agony. Again, we’re told Mielle has done evil and manipulated Aria in her past life, but since we don’t see those moments it just feels like someone picking on the weak, like we’re just watching a bastard be a bastard and suppose to enjoy it. And unlike Light Yagami or Lelouch vi Britannia, her schemes and mannerisms don’t have much flamboyance or flair to them. This is just a scheming bastard ruining peoples lives, and I can’t really root for her. I’m currently at chapter 18 and so far there are translations going up to chapter 20 as of me typing this, but I’m loosing my taste for this series fast if Aria is going to just keep being an asshole without having an real opponent out to get her for it. There’s been moments of some actual opposition, but nothing concrete to say she has an opponent yet, not a tangible one at least.

I also hear the original novel version of this story is a lot better, likely due to it taking time to explain a lot of her targets past deeds and making Aria’s evil acts seem a little more justified. It’s a lot easier to explain that in a book rather than a comic.

It’s a little early for recommendations, but a Chinese comic The Bloody Merchant Empress and the Cold Husband's Forceful Doting is a much better version of this premise. When the wronged Empress is returned to the past as the daughter of a wealthy merchant she uses her knowledge of the future and family’s resources to better the country while also humiliating her cold, manipulative, and obsessive former husband. I’m only about 60-ish chapters in that one out the currently 90-ish that are translated as of me typing this, but it’s pretty entertaining so far and has a protagonist I can root for.

Aria... just isn’t an appealing protagonist to me, at least not yet, but I’m willing to at least get though another 5 chapters before calling judgement on it.

The last thing I wanted to cover was I'm Not a Villainess!! Just Because I Can Control Darkness Doesn't Mean I'm a Bad Person! This manga is about a girl named Sakura that was reincarnated as the dark magic user Claudia Letsya, the villainess of a popular novel she read. Realizing the plot and her death at the hands of the series protagonist, she works from her childhood onward to prevent her death by sowing seeds of kindness and generosity. It isn’t as simple as that however, as the world of Lacia is deeply prejudice toward those using dark magic, as well as Claudia’s own appearance since dark skin and hair are foreign to the country. Along with that, her powers are prophesied to bring ruin to the country as well. So with the cards stacked against her, Claudia must fight back every prejudice against her to prove she’s not the villain the world claims her to be, and to not die in battle as an enemy.

One it’s own this manga is pretty interesting. Claudia is already hated due to prejudice and prophecy, so she has to somehow fight against the system that already condemned her. And unlike Satie, who already had years of experience as an adult living in the adult modern world, Sakura died as a child and only has a child’s prospective on things. She’s a rather smart child, but she still doesn’t have the intelligence or status to have pull over the world. She can only do so much with the cards against in her current body and status. She has to make friends and allies fast. She eventually does this and gains a slightly better reputation than the original novel gave her, however...

The Big Twist

Spoils for chapter 6 onward, but later we large that the protagonist of this world, Amelia Logan, is also reincarnated like Claudia and knows the story and world she’s in as well. However, unlike Claudia who’s trying to prevent her death, the owner of Amelia’s body is a haughty, arrogant, and snobby person who is ignorant of our villainess’s plight and is currently trying to set Claudia’s path to follow the ‘script’ so she can kill her.

This part I find interesting, as it give a lot more depth and a more interesting dynamic. While Claudia is trying to change her fate she has to deal with this awful, arrogant heroine that’s honestly doing more to ruin her own reputation than Claudia’s by being so pushy. And while the side cast can’t stand this arrogant light user, the society of Lacia wants Claudia as dead as Amelia does, so conspires against her. This adds another challenge onto Claudia, as the usually kind and trusting heroine is now her biggest adversary. And while that’s funny in a way, it also makes for a small problem I have with the series. That being...

Amelia is an Asshole

I didn’t think I’d use this criticism twice in the same Rambling, but okay. Like with Aria, Amelia is cartoonishly malicious toward Claudia. And while she’s always called out on it, she comes across more as annoying than comedic or imposing. This is probably intentional and updates are only up to chapter 9, but sometimes makes me wonder how Amelia can be so awful as a person and still keep her standing as a heroine. She tends backpedals the plot a little by being so inept of her status and assumes the fact that she’s ‘destined’ to kill Claudia means she’s free from criticism despite constantly being called out by the main cast. It’s less funny at times and more irritating that she can’t understand the story is moving in a much different direction than originally written and should act accordingly.

This is a personal gripe however. Like I said, there’s only 9 chapters of this manga currently translated so there’s plenty of time for things to get better. This might not even be a line crossed with most readers, but it’s crossed it for me so I’m going to mention it. That’s not a deal breaker, but it is annoying to read through.

Sadly, this manga only has 9 chapters out as of me typing this, and translations has moved to a crawl. The original novel seems have slowed as well in terms of translation speed, so this might just be a pointless inclusion on the list. Nonetheless, it’s definitely an interesting short read, if only for that

I’ve been meaning to find an excuse to talk about Villainess Ventures for a while, months really, and with this giant review/impressions/overview of villainess stories now’s as good a time as any.

So, if you’ve been following me for awhile you might occasionally hear me mention the youtube channel SugarPunch Design Works, a channel ran by Majikura and A Bad Idea (ABI for short). These two do a mix of parody recall episodes, animation critiques and discussions, podcasts, and anime harem reviews. The latter was something ran by Majikura with some animated bits by ABI. However, due to difficult copyright and fair use issues, Majikura has gone on record saying the harem reviews are more or less in hiatus until mentioned otherwise. In the meantime, he’s made a Webcomic on Tapas called Villainess Ventures, a comedic webcomic that treats villainy as a business and deconstructs/parodies common villain tropes. The premise is simple, protagonist Veronica Nightingale is a consultant for villains, advising them on schemes, giving them new business avenues, and so on. Like I said, there are a lot of tropes being played with here. That’s the basic synopsis, I’ve nothing more to say aside from that I’ve enjoyed reading it and I recommend you all give a look.

Look, I know I kind of railed on the last three series there for at least a paragraph each, but... well, this is a bit different. I don’t exactly feel comfortable critiquing a webcomic in the same vain I do other series, as this is a free comic that is available on a website at no cost. Technically the last three are in that same vein of being free to read, but that’s through piracy and are technically official works for purchase, just not on English sites/stores. I view webcomics in the same way I do things on fanfiction.net and fictionpress.net, I only review and critique things on request and on my own time (and yes, people on both these sites have requested reviews/critiques from me at points). At the moment I’d say the only strike I have against this series is that the artist/writer could announce their hiatuses more accurately, but that’s it. Overall this webcomic is updated weekly, one page per week, with a month or two of hiatus after every two-ish arcs. If you wanted my personal recommendations Professional Henchman and Join my Team are my favorites at the moment. The character designs are pretty good, you’ll find your favorite among the cast rather quickly, and it’s starting to get updated again as of me typing.

Like I said, this is a webcomic that’s free to read on a site that’s, as far as I’m aware, free to use and sign up to comment and subscribe to your favorite comics on the site. And feel free to subscribe to this comic and tell ‘em Allen X sent you.

Ch. 2: “The Doctor Falls” Analysis Doctor Who S10.12: Fighting One’s Inner Nature: How the Characters Display It at the Top Level

<- Read previous chapter

Note: I broke this chapter up into 2 parts because of length. This chapter is about how the main theme in DW is supported by the characters at a top level. The next chapter delves into the complex, multi-symbolic, contextual nature of the characters that shows us their deeper meaning.

Fighting One’s Inner Nature & How It Relates to the Characters

In “The Doctor Falls,” after Missy stabs the Master in the back and he blasts her in the back with his laser screwdriver, he says, “You see, Missy, this is where we've always been going.” While the quote perfectly applies to their murder/ suicide, it has a much broader meaning, as things have come full circle back to the beginning or near the beginning. Missy and the Master’s plight is an example of the theme of fighting one’s inner nature, which started with the very 1st Doctor.

While this theme is a main theme throughout DW, I find it especially prevalent in the rebooted series since the very first 9th Doctor episode. Perhaps that’s mostly because I’ve spent a long time analyzing nuWho and because I haven’t seen all of the available Classic Who episodes nor analyzed them nearly as much. (This is something I need to look at more closely with Classic Who.)

More important for this analysis is that it’s a major theme of the 12th Doctor since his very first episode. Furthermore, its importance to Season 10 can’t be overstated, and every single major character in the Season 10 two-part finale, including the 1st Doctor, embodies this theme in some form. An understanding of this theme and how it relates to the characters will help us understand their deeper symbolism and what they tell us about the Doctor’s story.

Externalizing the Fight Against Their Inner Natures

The finale brilliantly externalizes the characters’ inner fights on multiple levels. There is the obvious surface-level fight that is relatively easy to see with all the main characters. For example, Missy is struggling with whether to ally with the Master or the Doctor and all that they represent. However, below the surface-level fights, there are much more complex conflicts going on. For example, Missy says she is in 2 minds. What does that mean?

Moffat said if we want to know whom the Doctor is, we have to read the subtext, which means we have to understand the meaning of the other characters, too. DW has always been this way, using character mirrors, for example, to give us information about the Doctor. In fact, Missy and the Master are perfect examples of how we have to understand their multifaceted symbolism to see what they tell us about the Doctor.

Because the explanation is quite long, I’m breaking this up into 2 chapters. We’ll look at the easiest symbology in this chapter. Then, in the next chapter, we’ll concentrate on looking at the complex symbology of the characters and how they relate to the theme.

On the Surface: Fighting Against Their Inner Natures

Before we delve into the complex symbolism of the characters, it’s important to examine the characters on the surface to see what we can glean. By surface, I mean what we can gather from just looking at the finale and parts of other episodes that seem obvious, rather than the complex symbology that requires a much deeper analysis and understanding of outside references.

Alit & Kazran

Alit’s and Kazran’s symbolism is important. Because they are mirrors and require more detailed explanations, their symbolism is not on the surface. I’m going to save them for the next chapter on complex symbolism.

Nardole

Nardole’s major surface-level fight of his own nature is just beginning at the end of “The Doctor Falls.” We hear of it in his protests of tending to the human colonists:

NARDOLE: And more to the point, you are not sending me up there to babysit a load of smelly humans. DOCTOR: Yeah? Well, I'm afraid that's exactly what I'm doing. NARDOLE: Huh? This is me we're talking about. Me. You know what I was like. If there's more than three people in a room, I start a black market. Send me with them, I'll be selling their own spaceship back to them once a week. Please, I would rather stay down here and explode. You go and farm the humans.

His black-market statement was not a surprise. When we first saw Nardole in THORS, he was in River’s employment, and he knew at least some of her plans for the surgeon and King Hydroflax. Most likely, he knew she was involved in the black-market sale of the Halassi Androvar diamond.

Also, in “Oxygen,” he asked about the mining and gave us a bit more about his past:

NARDOLE: What are you mining? Is it worth stealing? ABBY: You think this is a robbery? DOCTOR: Well, killing you'd be a good start if it was. NARDOLE: It's how I'd do it. (They all stare at Nardole.) NARDOLE: If I was to do that sort of thing. Which, actually, I probably wouldn't, so please don't worry.

Nardole is a con man and thief, and it seems he is not above murdering people, which fits in with River’s persona. He also mirrors the Doctor, who murdered the general in “Hell Bent” and showed he, too, was not above conning and thievery in “Thin Ice.” Having Nardole settle down and protect the smelly humans without falling back into old ways is going to challenge his inner nature.

Bill

Bill’s surface-level struggle of fighting her inner nature is heartbreaking. CyberBill is a hybrid, a living mind uploaded into a robot, even though she initially doesn’t see herself that way. Since Bill’s human appearance has to be an illusion, just like CAL’s, it isn’t much of a surprise, if you’ve been following my posts. Therefore, the beauty is in seeing the storytelling: how this gets revealed.

It’s a wonderful idea to start with a human-looking Bill in the barn after 2 weeks passes from when CyberBill brings a lifeless-looking Doctor to Floor 507. Hazran is scared of her and locks her in the barn, which Bill, wanting to see the injured Doctor, doesn’t understand. She’s confused even after looking into the mirror, a brilliant device for the reveal, that Alit brings. Switching back and forth between Bill and CyberBill is another stroke of genius because it allows us to see Pearl Mackie reacting to situations while CyberBill is there to remind us of the illusion.

The heart of Bill’s major inner struggle starts coming to light once the Doctor tells her what she is, and he warns her not to get angry. The terrifying truth of her situation and what she is capable of once she destroys part of the barn is only compounded by her realization that everyone is scared of her.

On top of that, the Master’s cruel words to Bill are painful to watch. While he can’t see the results of his cruelty since he only sees CyberBill, her pain is externalized because we see Bill in her illusionary form. The irony here is that we see externalization in the illusion while it’s truly internalized in reality.

This illusion of herself as still human started in “World Enough and Time.” She, like the other Cyber-patients, would have had a sock over her head, which is what the reflection (shown below, yellow arrow) in that episode shows. It’s easier to see the reflection in the episode than in the image below.

However, Bill shows an exceptional mental strength that few others have. She fought to keep her identity all those months of living under the Monks, which has served her well since she is able to keep her humanity, even as CyberBill. Also, when she moves in front of the Doctor, Missy, and the Master to face whatever is coming up in the lift, she shows her bravery, even though she is scared. However, knowing that she can feel the Cyber-program taking over bit by bit, she’s ready to give up her inner conflict and her life, mirroring the Doctor, if she can’t be herself.

Regarding Bill’s internal struggle, DW wants us to look at “The Lie of the Land” to get an idea of Bill’s current fight against the Cyber-programming. For me, “The Lie of the Land” only works relatively well when placing it within the symbolism of the Library metaphor. In the finale’s context, the multi-symbolic Monks represent the Cyber-programming, and within the context of the Library that would be Doctor Moon.

BTW, we looked at some of the Library symbolism in “The Lie of the Land” analysis, but I need to map out the rest of the Library symbolism in that episode for you in the Season 10 post analysis. It’s a highly metaphorical episode, and in my humble opinion, it requires too many hoops to jump through to understand it in the normal context without understanding and applying the Library metaphor. Without that, the leaps of logic, especially at the end, result in what look like hand waving. This leaves the episode emotionally unsatisfying. It’s a great example of what I feared “The Doctor Falls” would be. I’m so glad that I was wrong about that.

The Master & Missy

I can’t think of a better single, simple canon example of fighting one’s inner nature than the relationship between the Master and Missy. They are the perfect embodiment of 2 different inner natures, yet they are the same person with 2 different faces. Therefore, pairing these 2 characters is a brilliant idea, externalizing the inner conflict and highlighting their most important differences.

Narcissism The Master and Missy together in the dancing scene on top of the hospital perfectly embody narcissism. We saw the externalization of the Master’s narcissism in “The End of Time” where he turned everyone on Earth into himself. That trait is perfectly highlighted in “The Doctor Falls” when the Master not only dances with himself as Missy, but also wants to kiss himself as her. Later, he desires a sexual relationship with her, which she turns down. While she’s willing to flirt with him, she draws a line and won’t cross it, marking an important difference in their inner natures.

Mental Stability Mental stability has never been a strength of either the Master or Missy. Since having the drumbeat removed from his head, he’s not a total loon, at least on the surface, but he’s far from being mentally stable. In contrast, within Season 10 in general and in the finale, Missy, when the Master isn’t unduly influencing her, looks much more mentally stable than he does. Admittedly, it’s a low bar. But still…

In previous seasons, both were psychopaths, duplicitous, and cruel. However, while Missy was changing in Season 10 and growing a conscience, representing change and moving toward redemption, the Master represents being unrepentant and stuck in the past. Missy is fighting her past for Season 10, which is externalized, especially with the presence of the Master.

The Season 10 finale highlights the Master’s old duplicitous and cruel ways, especially against Bill, who is very sweet natured and trusting. The Master’s and Bill’s contrasting natures make hurting her all the more horrible. And I don’t doubt that the Master is especially enjoying this because he is also hurting the Doctor.

Control Both the Master and Missy have sought control over others but in different ways. Because the Master is no longer being driven mad by the drumbeat, we get a more accurate picture of the damage left behind. Since he had little power, I’m referring to true control, over his life while the earworm was pounding in his head, it’s one reason why he lusted for power in the 10th Doctor episodes.

And still does in the 12th Doctor episodes.

In “The Doctor Falls,” the Doctor talks about how the Master kills people and makes himself king until the people rebel. And we’ve seen him do that type of thing before in the 10th Doctor episodes.

In contrast, Missy’s type of control is typically not as overt. For example, she uses her proxy, Clara, who is Missy’s familiar (as the “The Witch’s Familiar” suggests) to control the one person she seems to care the most about controlling. The Doctor.

However, we see in “The Doctor Falls” a different type of control. While she seems to go along with the Master to subdue the Doctor, it’s the Master whom she ends up ultimately controlling by backstabbing him. A murder/suicide to kill her past and create a bootstrap paradox upon his death to bring about his next incarnation, which may or may not be Missy. Ironically, it’s the murder/suicide that shows the biggest differences in their inner natures.

Duality of Their Nature: Spite & Hatred Vs. Friendship Toward the Doctor The most striking difference between the Master and Missy is the duality of their nature toward the Doctor. In the past, John Simm’s Master hated the Doctor, Rassilon, and the universe in general. He spited the Doctor when he could, and it looks like nothing has changed here because he still holds grudges.

Besides knowing that hurting Bill would hurt the Doctor, the Master is vindictive toward him in other ways. For example, the Master spites the Doctor in “The Doctor Falls” after the he asks the Master to stand with him:

MASTER: See this face? Take a good, long look at it. This is the face that didn't listen to a word you just said.

The Master enjoys the anguish on the Doctor’s face and walks off.

However, the Master’s spite and hatred against the Doctor is most acute when the Master shouts that he won’t stand with the Doctor. That, of course, is in response to Missy saying she would after she tries to kill her past. Since the Master isn’t dead yet, the thought of his future self standing with the Doctor is so repugnant that he prefers to murder his future self than to stand with his old friend.

The murder/suicide is a surreal expression of duality: narcissism of the Master’s present self and self-loathing of his future self. Again, it shows his vehement hatred of the Doctor, and the Master won’t give the Doctor the satisfaction of reuniting with his old friend through Missy. The murder/suicide is the ultimate expression of spite from the Master that shows he is fighting the other face of his inner nature right up to the end.

This mirrors his decision in “The Last of the Time Lords” not to regenerate. The Doctor begs him to, but the Master, wanting to do everything he can to hurt the Doctor, refuses and dies in the Doctor’s arms.

While the Master is happy being the Doctor’s archenemy and delighted to hurt the Doctor in whatever ways he can, Missy is the frenemy, who becomes the Doctor’s friend at the end to stand with him. Of course, however, the Master murders her first.

The Master’s hatred toward the Doctor is especially striking when compared to Missy’s deep-seeded desire to unite with the Doctor. It’s been clear since “Death in Heaven” when she tried to give the Doctor a Cyberman army that she’s wanted to be friends with him. She sounded quite sincere and childlike.

DOCTOR: Why are you doing this? MISSY: I need you to know we're not so different. I need my friend back.

It’s been her driving factor to make him become like her. We know she is sincere. And the Doctor, too, wants Missy to become like him, as we find out in the finale.

DOCTOR: Missy. Missy. You've changed. I know you have. And I know what you're capable of. Stand with me. It's all I've ever wanted. MISSY: Me too. But no. Sorry. Just, no. (she takes his hand) But thanks for trying. (Missy leaves.)

They both have tears in their eyes, and they both really want this, but on their own terms. His own redemption requires Missy to turn good. She represents chaos and the temptation to become like her and to go, for example, hell bent through the universe once again. Clara, as a proxy of Missy, also represents chaos and temptation, which is why the Doctor had to have a memory block until he figured out how to deal with these issues.

The 12th Doctor

Near the beginning of “The Doctor Falls,” Missy and the Master goad the Doctor, as he is tied to the wheelchair on the roof of the hospital:

MASTER: Ten years you spent up there, chatting. You missed her by two hours. MISSY: Ripped out her heart, threw it in to a bin, and burned it all away. He's internalising. I love it when he's Mister Volcano.

Missy wants him to explode in rage and become like he was when Clara died: Mr. Volcano. He doesn’t explode, but we see the externalization of ire on his face as he’s internalizing what happened to Bill.

While the above example illustrated the theme, the best instance in the finale of the 12th Doctor externalizing his fight against his inner nature is his struggle against regeneration. This Doctor went past his regeneration cycle and is very weary, having lived too long and with too much loss. Also, he’s been through a staggering amount of internal conflict – tortured, in part, by what he did during the war.

That’s not all. Being the Fish metaphor, his life, for the most part, has been about imprisonment, torture, and self-sacrifice on a grand scale. He chose torture and death over and over rather than confess his secrets to a manifestation of an inner conflict, his nightmare that chased him for 4.5 billion years.

While many of the Doctors spend their first episode a little confused about whom they are, the 12th Doctor has taken 3 seasons to answer his question of whether he is a good man. Not wanting to lose his hard-earned identity of becoming that good man, he’s ready to end his life, rather than regenerate into some unknown entity.

The 12th and 1st Doctors

Right at the end of the finale, we see the 1st Doctor. Pairing him and the 12th Doctor is brilliant, mirroring the pairing of Missy and the Master. This externalizes the inner fight of the Doctors’ natures: one person with 2 different faces. No doubt, this will give us an interesting contrast for Christmas, highlighting the Doctors’ differences in a way we haven’t seen before. This also brings us full circle – back to the epicenter of the war, where we examined the Doctor would have to return to (Chapter 18: Rescuing Children & Missy/Master).

However, there’s something else, too. Before the 12th Doctor died in the forest, he told the Cyberman that blasted him with an energy bolt:

DOCTOR: Argh! No, no. I'm not a doctor. I am the Doctor. The original, you might say.

This nearly mirrors the conversation the resurrected 12th Doctor has later with the 1st Doctor, except the 1st Doctor claims to be the original:

DOCTOR: I'm the Doctor. (The elderly figure in checked trousers, cape, scarf and astrakhan hat comes into view.) 1ST DOCTOR: The Doctor. Oh, I don't think so. No, dear me, no. You may be a doctor, but I am the Doctor. The original, you might say. (Taking hold of his lapels just like William Hartnell used to do.)

Here’s a conflict already of who is The Doctor. So Moffat is playing with the whole imposter theme that’s been so prevalent in Season 10. The irony here, which I’m sure Moffat is playing into, is that David Bradley is not the original actor for the 1st Doctor.

In fact, “The original, you might say” was first said in “The Five Doctors” by the 2nd actor, Richard Hurndall, to play the 1st Doctor, replacing the late William Hartnell. DW loves irony.

In the Next Chapter

We’ll examine the complex symbology of the characters that shows us what really is happening. For example, what does Bill’s illusion mean beyond the obvious? And what do Missy and the Master tell us about the Doctor?

Time for more LQ notes! I read probably...40 pages if not more yesterday and the night before that so I’m taking a little break cause I got emotional but I still have tons of notes to post and I have been dividing them up so that the lists aren’t too long. I’ve also got some longer notes because I really like to think about this blog. I probably should have mentioned this earlier but yeah...spoilers for ALL of LQ’s blog because i’m taking into account past and present posts.

This one has some of the longest notes in it and it ends at page 24 of his blog.

210. TBH I love LQ’s once-ler story like all the other parts of it too like his valley days and boy did I want to see him at the height of his business but he did sorta act like he was at the start of the blog…but I get the sense it woulda been a bit different.

214. So I can see what makes LQ so bad. He talks about yelling at people, took his brothers for granted, calls people fuckers and idiots when he’s mad and I get the impression that with his delusions of grandeur he milked his success for all it was worth and used that time as an opportunity to feel superior and successful for once and quite simply give himself whatever it was he wanted for some time. Allowing himself to act however he wanted too. You get hints about this kind of demeanor throughout the blog, especially when he’s upset. But frankly, I think he’s been upset this whole time thinking about how nothing could change, how he couldn’t change anything about what direction he was going in because he really didn’t think he could. And then he slipped up and lost the seed. His last hope to not be a fuckup and come out as somewhat of a hero in the end despite how he acted. He probably didn’t think it would matter back then. The way he talks while holding the seed just oozes with selfishness. This part is really fucking sad. Plus a lot of it plays out in LQ’s mind: what others think of him. He doesn’t seem to believe that love can be unconditional that one day if you appear to be shitty enough people will leave and he braces himself for that constantly. This note is long, but this is a very important part of his story and a clear view of his past.

215. I’ve said it once. I’ll say it again. I FUCKING LOVE HQ. I love how he…antagonizes and challenges LQ. I love his charismatic way of speaking. I love his energy. He’s wild. He does sometimes refer to LQ as separate. How could he not? They ARE separate. HQ tends to aggressively oppose everything LQ does and I wonder what caused HQ to exist. Is this what LQ wanted?

219: So HQ is pretty much kinda like LQ’s…”true self” (insert persona joke here I suppose) so it makes sense for him to insult the followers as much as he does because LQ was probably holding his tongue somewhat. But HQ kinda takes LQ’s…truthfulness and bumps it up to 50 so in a case where LQ is mildly irrated, HQ just amplifies it to a screaming fit till it’s impossible to ignore or shrug off. LQ also perceives himself to be rather horrible and HQ definitely drives that peg in.

220. LQ was apparently distrustful and managed most of the tasks of business on his own and not very well either. Comparing this to previous things he’s said , suddenly it doesn’t add up. A while back he mentioned that he shouldn’t HAVE to work because he is CEO but I think maybe he just didn’t want to get the credit for running his business so badly. Not to mention he had widely forgotten things back then.

221. Frankly when HQ is calm it’s really hard to discern him from LQ and he does. Get really calm at some point. I could picture LQ saying these exact things in previous posts. LQ doesn’t always lie, afterall. And HQ is not as much unlike LQ as people would think. But HQ kinda is a separate school of thought. I guess some part of LQ really wanted to be honest about everything and say everything that was on his mind and not hold it in anymore.

222. Wow. LQ really knows his METAphysics. (As in he understands perception of reality quite well.)

223. LQ is pretty much aware of everything you do. All your lewd questions, all your ships, everything. He just keeps his mouth shut because…common courtesy, eh? Even if talking about these things makes him ache. And just the way LQ defends this makes personal sense to him. He believes that since he has an askblog people have the right to ask him whatever they want and he can’t be too mad at them cause otherwise he wouldn’t be running it properly. Never the less, it hurts and though the hints are there throughout the blog, HQ makes it painfully obvious here and then. And he gets really mad too, so LQ is clearly rather mad and fed up with it himself. LQ also mentions that he never should have..what? Talked about it? Yelled at his followers? Questions.

Okay, also now that I’ve read his blog through I really understand how LQ and HQ are one in the same because I remember all the ways that LQ has acted in the past and making these notes expanded my understanding. Perhaps the most unprecedented thing about the blog is how the followers are going to react and the majority of them seem to think there is no way that he and HQ are one in the same.

225: HQ sorta explains that why he’s there is so that the truth wouldn’t be coming from LQ himself. HQ’s kinda like a scapegoat.

226: LQ honestly does inflict a lot of punishment on himself.

227. Static Oncie was attacked by LQ because he stood for the hope of not messing up for good and LQ didn’t think he had made any mistakes. Static Oncie continues to be an enigma, however…I’m still trying to figure him out.

231. Well, LQ honestly explains it well saying that some part of him probably got mad at him for not taking charge or a sense that when wandering in his thoughts they took control.

232. It’s pretty hard for LQ to have to push himself to face what he’s done and remember it when it hurts so much. But the latter isn’t exactly good for long either. It seems hard for him to find the right way of going about things.

240. Again, this part is rather hard to read. Litterally because most of it is supposed to be obscured. Frankly…what I’m starting to understand about HQ is he’s the part of LQ that wants to improve to some degree. What other reason would he have to be so honest? He also reacts in shock to LQ not responding in the light of holding a knife up to his own throat. HQ also tends to plead and question the other side of him. It hadn’t occurred to me but among many of my thoughts HQ is kinda like a manifestation of survival too. He’s aggressive as a last resort. He kinda acts out of turn and does whatever he has to do and overtime he just never gives up. He keeps trying different things and I think it might be for the sake of trying to get better. What would it be alternatively? Punishment? Later posts really nail that notion in, if you ask me.

Of just being curious an then having that curiosity satisfied. Sorta the nature of an askblog and opening yourself up for questions, isn’t it?
