Hello! If you feel like rambling about Javert to another Javert fan, I'd like to know who's your favorite and least favorite (s) Javert from any adaptations!
Aahh yes!! God, ramble icoming then. I'd love to hear yours, too.
Brick Javert is forever my light but to be honest I have very few standards for Javert, he’s such a fun archetype and great character that he tends to shine through even with poor writing. He’s also already a pretty horrible person so he’s easier to get right even when they make him worse. That being said I hate the “not all cops” route most les mis adaptations go where hes literally the only problem in the whole system and its all because he’s uniquely evil or sadisti, or breaks the law. Smarter minds have probably said stuff about it but his problem is not being a bad cop, his problem is that he is a “good cop” but cops are bad, so, he’s bad. (pet peeve but also hate post seine stuff where hes still a cop please my man died for acab let him keep that single W in life</3) Another aside is that all of these are whitewashed but as no lm adaptation has ever casted this role right. So we have to keep making noise about it til someone with half a rain picks up the reigns. But yeah.
Okay. Loveislove for all Javerts, but I’m personally less drawn to those that emphasize his poise+power and make him seem cool and am interested in the ones where he’s absolutely neurotic. I think he should be an insane guy trying to keep it together. Okay, so my faves:
1964′s TINO CARRANO *is* Javert. absolute unmatched king. I love how much of a intensely weird but still capable guy he is. You really get the sense he has his own life outaide of the plot, he keeps to himself just cause he feels like it but he can speak with people fine-- just hates ‘em.I like how much he laughs and makes impressions when he talks. absolute 1-1 brickvert, no doubt in my mimd your honor. There’s a clip of him talking about champmathieu(no subs im sorry, just, his energy, Gah.) that’s just the best. Here:
youtube
Shared fave spot is Anthony Perkins’s unbeated old nerotic queen energy. Absolutely fantastic inspired performance and wow, his insane line reads! My God. Him aging through the years and becoming more pathetic and behind the times as he follows Valjean ending up alone in the chase is not particularly unique, but damn is it done best here. Peak gayvert. I do like when a Javert isn’t necessarily obsessed with Valjean but finds him incredibly annoying á la brick BUT who am I to disagree with a good psychosexual chase. Love it.
1925′s Jean Toulout is another super fave. I love this guy! He rocks. His energy and physicality is so fun and he just has the perfect Javert posture and mannerisms on lock. He made me laugh out loud many times at how funny and brick-esque he acts. Plus lipstick! Absolute queen.
Tumblr media
Other faves are shojo Cosette Javert, gah. One of the best adaptations out there real ones know! I love his design, his voice, aura, all of it. Plus fix it end for our guy<3 1948′s Hans Hinrich’s Javert is also real fun. Suffers from bad adaptation, but he’s so smug and fun look at him making fun of Madeleine!
Tumblr media
Ulhas in 1955′s Kundan is also particularly great. Amazing Javert physicality and energy, and his face is super close to how imagine Javert. He nails that sweet spot between fanatic devotee, authoratative monster and confused really sad guy.
Tumblr media
I will say I also like Oyelowo, Rush and Malkovich, but they all suffer greatly from their adaptations being especially awful too. Particularly Rush and Oyelowo bring the heat with their performances! I love Rush’s wet greasy sad envy and Oyelowo’s righteous arch angel radiance coupled with how petty he is.
As for my sadgirl Javerts. Gah, crazy about them! Not how I see the character in the brick, but as I said, I just love all Javerts so much. This version rocks too.
Russel Crowe can’t sing these notes, yeah, but God it does not matter to me in the slightest in fact it enhances it. Genius performance. He revolutionized the meta. His javert balancing on the roof during stars being like “teehee oh, I’m gonna jump<33 ahh I’ll do it one day watch me<3″ was absolutely lethally good. Him having a crush on Madeleine may be less fun than the Brick’s 2 year spying campaign but god, the drama. This girl is a Mess.
1935′s Charles Laughton has to be seen to be believed, just a sobbing mess from his first scene where he explains about his parents to his superiors. Is it very Javert, who is repressed to hell and back? No, but see, it kind of owns. Where else will you get a Javert patting down Madeleine and complimenting his physique? Where will you get him gritting out “The law. It is the law that wants you, not I.” Greatness. (Terrible Hayes code wash of a film though, not worth it. Cameron Mitchell’s Chadius Pontmercy is hilarious however.) -> (said first scene)
youtube
My favorite musical Javert is Terrence Mann!!! I’m also a drunk stars truther. Javert is psychotic #girl representation and he GETS it. He brings the cats energy that Brick Javert has and more. My next musical fave is Norm Lewis,  I love that he has this just under the surfance bubbling emotions that are almost constantly overflowing, but he keeps them in check with a stiff dignity closer and closer to cracking under pressure that I associate w Javert. Flawless.
I also adore Earl Carpenter, I have a real soft spot for Hayden Tee.Tam Mutu is ugh next level too👌👌👌Kunio Murai makes me see red he’s so good as well... I like Bradley Jaden too though I’m not 100 on him cause he sounds so tiny, but I really like the fanatic vibe he brings out. You really do get the feeling he’s a brainwashed insane person.
I don’t think i have any Javert I hate.... maybe dallasvert. I’m not a fan of LMDallas in general apart from having one of the best Marius and Cosettes of all time(not cause of the modern concept it’s just... not good I don’t think) but Wattsvert in particular produces an emotion in me i can only compare to being repeatedly stabbed in the stomach and then contracting anthrax from the wound. I think a lot has to do with his visual presentation(his glasses make me so sick), but his entire presence is just too much wayyy too bad. I mean that’s part of the point but damn take him away from me I don’t wanna see him!
Far, far from hate but I’m not crazy about Quast, perhaps from over-exposure. I think he’s an amazing singer and performer but he just doesn’t embody the part to me as he does for a lot of people. Usually I tend to find him too monotone, and kind of an authorative mask without any of the tasty emotion underneath except for rage. Like all I get from him is poise and anger. I know Javert in the books is a stone wall who doesnt show when he’s upset— but I think the medium of musical exists to externalise that huge emotion inside! It’s silly and cheesy and big! And he doesnt bring that energy for me, just anger and pettiness. Carpenter and Lewis both serve that brand too, but with more nuance added to it…. in my opinion they perfected his formula, so Quast to me is going back to just cake without frosting. That being said, man is that basic cake the groundwork for the rest, and it is great.
I actually made a fancam of sorts for some of my fave javerts haha (mostly musical-- I made this about my favorites from way back, so it’s not very updated either. Anyway:)
ALL OF THIS TO SAY AHH I’d love to hear your takes as well:) Javert fans unite.

are you still playing. can i ask: valvert?
Tumblr media
months later but i AM STILL PLAYING.
look i’m one of those awful valvert/les mis fans who only cares about the movie version. you can tell bc in my mind valjean is always the taller one and this is literally never the case in ANY OTHER ADAPTATION.
also i mean. am i realistically only here bc of russell crowe’s sad face? is there like. any point in pretending otherwise? he’s literally no one’s favorite part of that movie but i will stand by his casting till the end of time. it’s not his fault tom hooper is an idiot when it comes to directing musicals!!!!
but w/r/t the ship it’s like -- i don’t know, obviously they’ve got issues(tm) to work through but there’s just something so interesting about valjean not having ANYONE in his life who really knows him/who he used to be (INCLUDING HIMSELF, in some ways) but javert does. once javert stops being a Justice Robot and decides to act like a human and see other people as human, i think he’ll at least be able to understand and relate to valjean in a way valjean has not been able to let anyone else do for decades.
also the tradition of post-seine rescue fics + ensuing friendship/romance are just. 😘👌
also the possibility of javert rescuing valjean right back (either passively, bc valjean having to take care of javert post-seine is what saves him from getting sick and dying from loneliness after Cosette leaves to get married, or actively, bc he notices valjean is being a self-martyring idiot and forcibly returns the favor of keeping him alive) is the best!!!
it’s all very ‘people who adopt a rescue dog w behavioral problems’ vibes: ‘i adopted him, but really it was HE who rescued ME’. javert would hate it lmfao

please give me a rant on Cats ily btw
Hi nonnie! Omg ily too, thank you! And thank you for this ask, because ooohh boy do I have feelings about this adaptation.
First of all, I have a few disclaimers to make:
1. I love the actual musical. Yes, I know the show is very controversial--either you love it or you hate it--but I grew up on "Cats." I loved it, and the book of poems it's based on. So for those looking for a rant about the lack of plot or criticizing the show itself, this post isn't for you.
2. I'm not even going to address the CGI other than to say....that was a choice. I think the critics and social media have done plenty to criticize it, and I won't say more about that fever dream on 'shrooms.
3. There were two aspects of the movie I enjoyed: Jennifer Hudson singing "Memory" and Taylor Swift's appearance; though even the presence of my favorite artist of all time was not enough to redeem this movie.
And for you, nonnie, I rewatched both the trailer and The Rum Tum Tugger song. I will be sending you the bill for my therapy <3 ;)
Now, onto the good stuff.
I'll start with the casting. Something that a ton of movie musical adaptations do is stunt-cast big names to draw audiences because they're afraid that people won't want to see a movie musical. This happened in the "Les Miserables" movie, and while big-name choices like Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron-Cohen, and even Hugh Jackman had varying degrees of success, Russell Crowe as Javert was an obvious flop.
People like Jackman, Meryl Streep, and more recently James Corden have been cast in all these movie musicals because they're famous enough to get the average person into the theater. But, God, at what cost? I mean honestly, the only instance in which I think stunt casting truly worked was in the "Chicago" movie, which I firmly believe is the best movie musical adaptation ever made. (But that's another post.)
But please for the love of God can we start casting people with singing talent in musicals? Please? I'm begging.
Anyway, I digress. My point is: casting big names--even distinguished, incredible actors like Sir Ian McKellen and Idris Elba and Dame Judi Dench--will not save a movie musical from being shitty.
But here's probably my biggest problem: the acting itself.
Almost every single character was just the actor's personality projected into it. With the exception of the two previously unknown actors, it just felt like the characters were simply the actors dressed in costume and being a weird, exaggerated version of themselves. Little attention seemed to be paid to the actual characterization of the cats.
I think what hurt the most for me, personally, was Jason Derulo as Rum Tum Tugger. Oh, ouch, this one was painful because growing up I was a huge fan of the character. To be fair to Derulo, it is nearly impossible to follow in the footsteps of Terrence Mann. I mean, he played both Tugger and Javert in the original Broadway casts of Cats and Les Mis respectively--he's a musical theater giant.
But with Derulo, Tugger became...weaker and kinda one-dimensional. Rum Tum Tugger is flamboyant and funny, sort of like Elvis or Mick Jagger. He's larger than life, and Derulo just made him kinda sleazy without the high energy. I will say--his take on the iconic ending riff was good; he hit the right notes while still making it his own. Derulo is clearly talented, but I don't think he was well cast in this role.
Honestly, I think "Cats" should never have been adapted. Even if it pleased every die-hard fan of the show and did everything perfectly, it's so controversial and polarizing among theater fans that there's little chance that a non-theater fan is going to even see it--let alone enjoy it. The musical itself is kind of insane; it's an acquired taste, and it's not for everyone.
The moral of the story is, in my humble opinion, if you can't use the film genre and tools to enhance the story (or at least match the quality) then do a professional shot of it on stage, and either way, hire talented, diverse, unknown theater actors who can sing.
*sigh.* Alright, end of rant. Honestly, thank you nonnie this was cathartic. I think we can call it even on the therapy bill ;)
Send me an ask about Harry Potter, broadway/musicals, The West Wing, and/or Taylor Swift! Or just about life in general :).
Also, I have a playlist of my 99 most listened-to songs of the year so far. Pick a number 1--99 and send me an ask and I'll write you a fic based on it!

Another Opinion No One Asked For About Les Mis
Hi! Don’t mind me this is just word vomit.
TL;DR: Michael Ball is an INCREDIBLE Javert and Russel Crowe wasn’t as bad as everyone says
I LIKE Russell Crowe’s portrayal of Javert. Does he have a great singing voice? No, it’s just marginally better than Pierce Brosnan in Mama Mia.
I LOVE Michael Ball’s portrayal of Javert. First time I heard about him playing the part opposite Alfie (loml and resident tiny badass opera man), I was really unsure about it. I own all of Boe-Ball’s albums together and I have always joked that in some of them, you can’t tell they’re duets because Alfie is so damn loud and Michael (AT LEAST IN THESE SONGS) is more of a crooner.
I love the staunch, rigid Javerts: Norm Lewis, Phillip Quast, Roger Allam, Earl Carpenter.
BASICALLY, I love the character of Javert. But hear me out. There is a wild difference between playing him as a living breathing version of the lithograph presented in the novel, and playing him as a very human, very misguided, eventually very, VERY broken victim of the system.
That’s what I liked firstly about Russell’s version. I mean he’s got a naturally sad looking face, first of all, and he played the humble servant of the law in front of Madeleine especially well. Obviously, because he’s Russell Crowe, he also did the intense lashings-out of anger and violence very well. Even up against Hugh Jackman he seems like the kind of dude that could make you bleed if you crossed him the wrong way. Was his the elegant, “Bang. A pistol shot”, commanding figure that the confident, unbroken Javert is? No, there’s nothing particularly elegant about him. But I like him, and I think his chemistry with Hugh is the sort needed for a meaningful examination of that relationship.
NOW. Michael Freaking Ball. Lil baby afroed Marius. The cartoon golden retriever to Alfie Boe’s little-dog-with-a-big-bite. He seems wonderful, I love his dimples, he’s adorable-- very Marius, but Javert?? I was doubtful. I didn’t KNOW that this motherfucker could bust out a big voice when he wanted to. I’d never heard that from him. But again, he and Alfie are so wonderful together and they REALLY play off one another’s tension (i.e. Alfie as JVJ at Toulon, yikes). So I listened to some of the cast recording from their 2019 staged concert before even considering watching it. I didn’t even take it easy and listen to Stars first, oh no. I went right for the Soliloquy.
BITCH I CRIED. I sat on the end of my bed with tears in my eyes, full goosebumps on my arms, breathless. I love this character, I’ve always hated the suicide scene, but this one GOT TO ME. His voice breaks, he runs out of breath, there are tears in the back of his throat which don’t make the notes pretty but it WORKS. THAT is a man on the literal precipice, realizing everything he’s done with his life, not only the obsession with this one man, but the pillars of his certainty that Valjean was as hellbent on revenge as he was, that JVJ HAD to be evil, had to be as mad and driven and bloodthirsty as he was; this all was a lie. He was forgiven, in a soft, kind voice, where he expected a knife. He was so certain of the narrow, black and white world he lived in, and it was all cut out from under him. The truth BROKE him, completely.
Other Javerts have shown this happening really well. Earl Carpenter is one of my favorites, because even through his biting proper English accent you can hear his desperation. But it is a whole other level to completely break down, to somehow sing-scream those last few lines, to reach out into the void he’s singing about and try and grasp it; Michael fuckin’ DID IT. Finally watching the concert fully cemented this for me. He aged himself. He choked himself. He looked like he was in immense physical pain, and goddamn it, it was good. I’m dramatic as fuck but I’m not afraid to tell you I was physically shaking by the end of it.
Am I partial to the broad-shouldered, barn-door Javerts? Absolutely. Does the new staged concert make me contemplate never watching the movie again? Possibly (sorry Hugh). And I don’t have a particular point to make with this long-ass post except to say, everyone is entitled to their opinions and their favorites (just dear god, just disagree and don’t shit on ANY of the casts), and uh, yeah, this is mine. Well done Michael Ball, you sneaky bastard.

☕️ movie stars headlining film adaptations of musicals.
i have really mixed feelings about this
Sometimes, they can be done right, and be done INCREDIBLY well:
The 2007 version of “Hairspray” continues to be one of my favorite musical-to-film adaptations. The cast was incredible, the way they played the characters was perfect, and Queen Latifa, Elijah Kelly, and James Marsden still have my favorite songs of the movie, as well as my favorite performances.
- Likewise, “Sweeney Todd”, the 2007 film, was incredibly well done. Johnny Depp was an INCREDIBLE Sweeney, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen were amazing, and overall, and don’t even get me started on Alan Rickman. It's one of my favorite musical adaptations.
Then you have the in-betweens:
“Into the Woods”, for the most part, was semi-enjoyable. Emily Blunt was a beautiful Baker’s Wife, Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen were hilarious as the two princes, and Christine Baranski, as always, was wonderful. Additionally, though it was a brief scene, Johnny Depp was, again, incredible as the wolf. However, the other performances felt lackluster, and not as impressive, particularly Meryl Streep’s performance as the Witch, in my opinion.
I personally loved Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway in “Les Mis”. Hathaway’s version of “I Dreamed A Dream” made me cry in theaters, and Hugh playing Valjean is everything I could have ever wanted. However, in the same movie, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried left a lot to be desired, especially Crowe’s performance as Javert. (i’m not mentioning any of the stage performers, such as Aaron Tveit or Samantha Banks, because i think their performances were utter perfection)(also, like in Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen were amazing).
“The Prom” is difficult to judge. Ryan Murphy made it so much about the Broadway actors (DeeDee and Barry), that we never really got a chance to know Emma or Alyssa. While I’m not going to judge Jo Ellen Pellman, as I think she did the best with what Ryan Murphy changed, I do wish the movie had stayed true to the stage musical. Ariana DeBose and Jo Ellen Pellman could have done wonders with Alyssa and Emma’s story, but instead, James Corden took front and center once again, and really made Barry feel like the protagonist.
I didn’t particularly enjoy his performance, and I do wish Brooks Ashmanskas could have reprised his role as Barry in the film.
One of the saving graces of the movie was, obviously, Andrew Rannels as Trent, but I won’t talk much about him as he is a Broadway actor.
This movie would have been the perfect opportunity to give unemployed Broadway actors a chance, or perhaps even have the OBC reprise their roles, but unfortunately, and quite ironically, the film went from being all about Emma and Alyssa (as it should have been), to making the focus the two Broadway Actors who were literally called narcissists at the beginning of the film.
i’m sorry i have strong feelings about “The Prom”
Then they can be just plain awful:
“Cats” is an obvious thumbs-down for the way it was done. That is a show where almost all the actors should have a strong Broadway background. While some of the major stars had entertaining performances (Jason Derulo, for one, was actually quite a wonderful Tugger in my opinion, and I did love Les Twins as Plato and Socrates), all the others fell flat when compared to Robbie, Steven, and Francesca.(Laurie is the exception. His Misto did end up becoming very endearing). Had they made most of the major cats Broadway actors, I think the movie could have been much more enjoyable, and much more respected, since they wouldn’t have particular cast members making fun of it.
So yes, musical-to-movie adaptations can be done correctly and still feature movie stars, but they can also be done horribly.
I definitely think it depends on who the actors are, and who the directors are, because that will absolutely play into it.
in conclusion, Tom Hooper should never be allowed to touch another musical again and James Corden should stop being cast in musical-to-film adaptations

QUESTION OF THE DAY #6: Send me your most unpopular theatre opinion. Something that might make someone want to fight you. Please don’t be offensive (racist, misogynistic, etc.), but other than that…go as hard as you want. Spill all the tea.
MY ANSWERS: 1) The Pretty Woman score fucking slaps idek, 2) Come From Away (or even Bandstand...) should’ve won the 2017 Best Musical Tony, 3) I prefer the West End Heathers cast album to Off Broadway, 4) Shows shouldn’t sweep the Tonys just because they’re Best Musical worthy...shows that aren’t too critically acclaimed but have really impressive elements should get recognition too.
SUMMARY: Out of 37 responses: 5 were about Dear Evan Hansen, 3 were about Hamilton specifically, 2 were about: Rent, ALW, Wicked, In The Heights, Be More Chill, etc. etc....if your favorite musical is one of these and you get easily offended i wouldn’t read these.
NOTE: I agree with some of these, I highly disagree with others. I do not endorse any of the things that were said, I am simply sharing them with you all. These were what was sent to me. I’m going to number them so if you want to complain about or agree with one you can send me an ask with the number you’re referring to.
1. howmuchchildrens said: unpopular opinion: i really liked the 2012 version of les mis. i liked russel crowe as javert.
2. Anonymous said: Unpopular opinion: Bootlegs harm to local theatre communities, though I do not believe anyone intends for that to be the case. While it's possible to bootleg responsibly (and I might even say it's beneficial to do so), those who may not know the intricacies of theatrical copyright law or who haven't heard the horror stories from a theatre that's been hit with legal action DUE to a bootleg may record or watch a show irresponsibly, which can greatly harm other routes of theatre accessibility.
3. Anonymous said: Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals are mostly terrible. He only got and stayed popular because a lot of other musical creators and taste makers died in the AIDS epidemic
4. Anonymous said: Almost all musicals using the songs of one artist are cash grabs with no plot or point.
5. Anonymous said: If your musical only has 1 woman OR the women only get sad/romantic songs you need to do something else with your life.
6. nerdshrimp said: Unpopular opinion: Next To Normal does a better job of portraying the effects of mental illness than Dear Evan Hansen does. N2N also doesn't romanticise mental illness & excuse shitty behavior like DEH tries to
7. Anonymous said: Hadestown is a lesser show on Broadway. I fell in love with the live album, and I was so excited for it to come to Broadway. I was so disappointed to see the changes they made. Orpheus and Eurydice's relationship is less interesting and more generic. The changed lyrics are often sloppy and not as good as the original. They fucking wrecked Epic III. Also, no hate to R/ee/ve, but he's just not a good enough singer to convince me that he could soften the heart of Hades. His high notes are awful.
8. Anonymous said: opinion: we are the tigers deserves a broadway run or at least a proshot
9. bimystique said: e/c is NOT A GOOD FUCKING SHIP. the ENTIRE PLOT OF PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is christine trying to escape erik's abuse. WHAT FUCKING PART OF THAT IS ROMANTIC TO YOU PEOPLE.
10. Anonymous said: unpopular theatre opinion(s): Dear Evan Hansen is Very Bad for its handling of mental illness, Hamilton is overrated and praised too much, and high school/college musical theatre programs can be just as good as Broadway. (also, musical movies would be better if they hired broadway actors, but that's not an unpopular opinion)
11. Anonymous said: I don’t like Lin Manuel Miranda and Hamilton is overrated
12. Anonymous said: I don’t like dear Evan Hansen..... at all. I think it’s kind of boring and really overhyped.
13. Anonymous said: unpopular opinion: in the heights is far better than Hamilton. both are good but ith hits different yknow
14. Anonymous said: The bring it on and legally blonde musicals are BAD! The movies are 100 times better
15. Anonymous said: unpopular opinion? wicked is the epitome of white feminism. it's preached as super great for representation but we literally got the first black glinda in 2019?!?!?!? and before that woc could only play elphaba who's villainized and deemed evil by the whole city
16. Anonymous said: Not so much an opinion as a reaction, but of all Lin's works (ITH, Bring it On, 21 Chump Street, Hamilton), 21 Chump Street gets the biggest emotional reaction of all the cast recordings. The second Justin is like "I don't want your money" (And then later on with the "...what the heck did you.... dooooo", I am a complete goner. Worse than Abuela Claudia and Philip Hamilton's deaths combined
17. Anonymous said: Whenever Je.ssie Mu.eller hits certain notes, she sounds like Tommy Pickles from Rugrats.
18. Anonymous said: aotd6: not everyone knows what im talking about, but the cats 2016 broadway revival choreography was WAYYYY better than the original. the original had a lot of creepy uncomfortable moments and the new one looks way cleaner and up to date
19. Anonymous said: raoul is better than the phantom in every conceivable way
20. Anonymous said: I hate Anastasia so much. it's such a boring show and the music is uninteresting. I wanted to like it so bad but GOD is it boring.
21. Anonymous said: In the Heights.... Overrated.
22. Anonymous said: I do not know if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but here is my opinion: Musicals that are entirely or nearly entirely songs (Hamilton, Hadestown, In The Heights, etc) are the most valid bc I can understand the plot without using wikipedia (I'm looking at you, Jagged Little Pill, I love you but what is your plot????)
23. Anonymous said: I'd rather have a bad film adaptation than no film adaptation
24. Anonymous said: Rent sucks and while it was a stepping stone for more ""controversial"" topics to appear on Broadway it's actually biphobic and features several generally terrible people doing generally terrible things and doesn't actually address the real crisis at all; it's all performative wokeness. The only real good it did was cast a bunch of "nobodies" for the time and make theater somewhat more accessible.
25. stardust-and-seas said: Dear Evan Hansen doesn't properly address mental health despite being about mental health and resolves nobodies character arcs satisfactorily. It's another show that reaches its hands around the throats of marginalized teenagers saying "look I'm relatable!!" The songs taken out of context are significantly more powerful than when placed in the context of the show, which gives us exactly zero evidence of Evan's work to improve and also never resolves Evan's u healthy goals in the first place.
26. stardust-and-seas said: Be More Chill is a raging dumpster fire and the only decent song from it, Michael in the Bathroom, reads as a whiny rich white boy whose potential social anxiety and depression is left ambiguous, which is exactly what it is. When taken out of context it better exemplifies the othering that happens to marginalized groups but lets be real here: bullying/cliques don't happen to "just anyone"; it's the marginalized groups that are othered and abandoned for not being "normal"
27. stardust-and-seas said: There's a difference between shows that don't take themselves seriously because they're meant to be fun and light and shows that pretend not to take themselves too seriously but want to be taken seriously by the audience and the latter always ends up mediocre at best
28. redueka said: i think that dear evan hansen handles every issue it presents badly. i also think that beetlejuice was badly directed
29. Anonymous said: Well I don’t EVER condone cheating, I’m team Jamie in the last five years. He tried so hard to make their relationship and life good, and Cathy gave him nothing in return
30. youcanlolyoucansayohwell said: The answer of the day- I don't get the BMC hype. I'm out of the age bracket it's meant for that might it be. I enjoy it but I don't think it's the greatest thing in the world like some theatre fans do.
31. Anonymous said: i like the rent 2005 recording better than the obcr
32. Anonymous said: unpopular opinion ? : the music of wicked just like isn’t that good. like it’s good but it’s not like, Good, yknow. it’s pretty standard it doesn’t stand out to me. kinda boring
33. Anonymous said: mari.ah r.ose fa.ith is not a good regina george. everything she says sounds monotonous and while i understand she's trying to play off the ""whatever"" teenager (she does this a lot with her teenage characters), 90% of the time she sounds and looks like she doesn't want to be there; her voice is great but most songs feel unnatural and forced and she changes them too much. she's just not selling regina to me as a believable character (this is all from a technical point of view)
34. Anonymous said: Unpopular Opinion: as much as i like musicals based on movies (like waitress), i think not every movie needs to be a musical.
35. Anonymous said: Unpopular opinion (?) the emojiland musical Kinda Slaps
36. Anonymous said: as one of my high school tech theatre teachers once said: "Andrew Lloyd Webber is overrated"
37. Anonymous said: sorry to whoever likes it but Seussical is an absolutely nonsense crackpot plot disguised with okay-to-good music, like I don't even know where to start. I was in the show and didn't even know there was an entire secondary plot line featuring sending children to war until we were halfway through rehearsals

yaaaas to all of this. Also certain people’s replies to me are showing up in weird spots, like not in my dashboard? Or else without a reply button? Not sure why that is, new to this hellsite. I will read the hell out a Russell Crowe Javert-trashing post any day. How were the choices for that film adaptation sometimes SO good and sometimes SO bad? [remembers going to CATS] [twice] Oh riiiight
Ayyy this reply works lol. Maybe tumblr is glitching out with replies on and off. But GOD okay, let’s talk about Javert; he can fucking STEAL the show. My favorite version is also from the 10th anniversary concert, played by Philip Quast:
youtube
This man. GETS IT. Javert is supposed to embody the cold, harsh, unforgiving law. He’s supposed to be intimidating and have a commanding presence when he enters a room. Russell Crowe was so underwhelming! What a terrible character to have such an underwhelming performance of! Javert is one of my favorite musical antagonists, and then Crowe just......sucked. It wasn’t just the vocals, because Anne Hathaway didn’t sing great, but she acted her heart out, and I think that matters more in a film adaptation; Crowe just acted so bland and disinterested as Javert. It sucks, because a great Javert could have easily gotten an Academy Award nom for Best Supporting Actor, because the role is that strong.
ALSO. There’s the scene towards the end (spoilers for my other followers lol) where Gavroche is dead on the street among the other dead revolutionaries, and then Crowe’s Javert takes off his medal and puts it on his body. What?! That’s so out of character! It’s Valjean sparing Javert, and that act alone, which makes him go through an existential crisis so severe that he jumps off a bridge. The lines go:
Who is this man? What sort of devil is he To have me caught in a trap And choose to let me go free? It was his hour at last To put a seal on my fate Wipe out the past And wash me clean off the slate! All it would take Was a flick of his knife. Vengeance was his And he gave me back my life!
Like....he wouldn’t give a shit about Gavroche being dead lmao. I suspect that was the director’s choice, but man, yeah, the movie got some things sooo right (and overall I do really enjoy it), but some things so wrong. On my iPod, I have the movie soundtrack, and then I have Javert’s songs and “Master of the House” replaced with the 10th anniversary concert versions lol
and we’re not gonna touch Cats lmao

For the meme, 003 Javert?
@musicalpasta also asked for 001-Les Miserables, 002-Valvert, and 003-Javert, so I’ll just go ahead and answer them all here. (I didn’t forget about this, I promise. There’s just been a lot going on, and I wasn’t able to finish it until now.) Les Miserables- Favorite character: JAVERT IS MY GUTTER CHILD, AND I WILL LOVE HIM FOREVER Least Favorite character: Either Tholomyes or Madame Thenadier 5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Valvert (Platonically), Valvert (Romantically), Enjoltaire, Javert x His Name, Marius x Cosette. Character I find most attractive: It really depends on the adaptation, but out of all of them, I'd definately say Quast!vert. Character I would marry: I haven't gotten to the Barricade Boys' part in The Brick yet, but from what I've seen from Tumblr, probably Jehan. Character I would be best friends with: Grantaire. A random thought: Javert went to Heaven. 100%. Your argument is invalid. An unpopular opinion: Russell Crowe was a good Javert. My Canon OTP: The one-sided relationship of Enjoltaire. My Non-canon OTP: Valvert as platonic life partners. Most Badass Character: Tie between Jean Valjean or Javert. Most Epic Villain: I would say Javert, BUT HE'S NOT A VILLAIN, so... The King, maybe? (I just don't want to give the Thenadiers any positive attention at all.) Pairing I am not a fan of: Marius x Eponine Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): In most adaptations, Cosette. Favourite Friendship: Canon- Marius and Courfeyrac ; Non-Canon- Valjean and Javert Character I most identify with: Javert Character I wish I could be: Enjolras
Valvert- When I started shipping them: Ever since I first saw the movie, I always thought they could have been such good friends if only they had both lived. My thoughts: I headcanon both of them as asexual, but I totally see them being platonic life partners (once they work through their many... many issues). What makes me happy about them: My Poor Gutter Child finally gets to feel true happiness and have someone that truly loves him for probably the first time in his life. What makes me sad about them: It's not in canon because THEY'RE BOTH DEAD. Things done in fanfic that annoys me: When the relationship is rushed and/or they are severely OOC. Things I look for in fanfic: Slow-burn post-Seine AUs (although in all honesty, as long as they're alive, I really don't care.) My wishlist: I'm not sure what this means, but I wish they weren't dead (which they're not because Vicky was a LIAR). Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: In all honesty... I can't see them being with anyone except each other. I mean, they're the only ones who Truly know each other and their backstories, so I guess nobody. My happily ever after for them: Once again, pretty much anything as long as they're happy and not dead.
Javert- How I feel about this character: He is my Gutter Child(tm), and he deserved so much better. Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: I headcanon him as ace, but if I had choose, I'd say Valjean for obvious reasons. My favorite non-romantic relatioship for this character: Valvert 100% I think if their situations had been different (and/or if they hadn't, you know, DIED), they could've been best friends. Best friends with issues, but still best friends. My unpopular opinion about this character: Again, Russell Crowe was a good Javert. One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: Valjean pulling him out of the Seine and helping him through his mental illness until he finds his will to live and then they become platonic life partners and live happily ever after and nobody dies. Thankfully, that is what happened because like I said earlier, Vicky was a liar. Favorite friendship for this character: This isn't exactly what this is asking, but I headcanon that because Madeleine and Javert most likely worked closely together quite often (and just the fact Madeleine is friendly to everyone), Madeleine was probably the closest Javert ever really had to a friend, which is one of the reasons why he felt so betrayed when it was revealed that Madeleine was Valjean. Update: I just realized I forgot about Gymont and how much I LOVE fics with them together, especially when Javert’s had a hard day chasing a certain convict, and Gymont cheers him up. (I’m so sorry for forgetting you, Gymont. Here, have some apples 🍏🍎) My crossover ship: Again, I can't see Javert with anyone except Valjean, so I don't think I have a crossover ship with him.

Tumblr media
CHRIS
I am so happy my babies are born Gavroche and Eponine are beautiful I love all my kids so much. It’s now a month later its June 13 Erin’s birthday ever since the babies was born her, Blair, Rihanna and Teyana been working out like crazy, they will be in the house gym or go to a different one but Erin keep saying she wanna get back to her size before she got pregnant but I keep telling her that she looks great with the meat on her, and how much I love it. But she’ll just look at me and nod then start right back with working out. She has been having these mood swings with me a lot lately but I know its not her, it the cancer that is making her act crazy. Today is Erin’s birthday, me and the kids are in the kitchen getting her food ready.
“Can I have this?” CJ asked
“No that’s for your mommy come on” I said and we went up stairs to the room. Erin was sitting up feeding Eponine and when she saw us she started smiling as we sat the food on the side table. “Happy Birthday bae”
“Happy Birthday mommy” the twins says and Erin looks at the breakfast we sat on the table that made her smile.

“Why are we sitting in here when they are out there?” she asked sitting down.
“Wait a few minutes please” I said after about 10 minute the cast walked in and Erin stood up clapping for them, as they all walked in.
“OH MY GODNESS, I can’t believe I’m meeting you all” she said and she started to hug them all one by one and they was tell her Happy Birthday. So we all sat down she was sitting in the middle of Hug Jackman and Russell Crowe with the biggest smile on her face.

“Yes I been to your charity lunch before you had so many people there that you didn’t notice I guess but when I saw it was the woman that’s the face of cancer awareness and how your always doing for others I had to say yes” Samantha said.
“This movie is my favorite, after I let Chris watch it with me he fell in love with Gavroche and Eponine he was like if we have another child we have to name them one of those names. So we end up having twins just last month and we named them Gavroche Javert Brown and Eponine Cosette Brown” she said and they started laughing.
“True fans” Russell said
“Yes sir, I can’t believe I’m sitting here with yall thank you again this is a day I will never in my life ever forget” she said After that we party some more the cast left all but Hug Jackman and Russell Crowe they stayed a little longer and had fun with us. Erin even danced a few times with Russell Crowe then they had to leave but the dinner went on and Erin had a blast. She even loved her birthday gift, a new car, I knew She wanted.

ERIN
After getting home from a wonderful birthday, we put the kids to bed and was in the room Chris was hugging me and kissing me, his hands grabbed my ass while we kiss. And we have the most wonderful freakiest sex ever, my baby put it down for my birthday.
*ONE MONTH LATER*
I was in the house by myself today cause the older twins was with Keeis and Zaria playing with Lil Keeis and PJ was with Peter cause Peter was going to be going off doing a few shows and wasn’t going to be able to be here to see him so he had him for the weekend and the youngest twins was with Marie and Kid cause Marie found out she was pregnant and want some type of practices with babies so they was going to have them over night. Chris wasn’t here he had to go to the studio to help out Kid Ink with a song and was going to come right home when he got done so we can got get something to eat. I was cleaning up today I was feeling good today no pain well not pain to the point where I needed my crutches but it was a pain that I got used to it. I got done cleaning the kids room and I was in me and Chris’s room picking up his dirty clothes when I came across a cell phone, I looked at it lost cause I know I just spoke to him on his phone.
I looked at it and it didn’t have a locked on it so I went thru it and what I saw was unbelievable, it was picture after picture of Kendra I couldn’t believe it.
And There was text msges between him and the contact name said Mario but the only Mario I know of is Kid but why would he be under Mario and Kid, so I opened up the last one which was the day before yesterday.
Mario-“Thanks for last night; I really appreciate it”
Chris-“No problem babe”
Mario-“Do you think you could give me that big daddy dick tonight? (;”
Dialing Mario.
“Damn baby, you just called me 3 hours ago, I’m on my way to your house now be there in 20 mins?” a female voice said
“Who is this?” I asked
“Hold the fuck up, this is Kendra, who is this?” Kendra asked…Click…
I couldn’t think I just got my keys and left the house getting in my car I drove a hour and 10 minutes all the way to Chris’s old place and sure enough there was his car and there was a red corvette. I got out and went to the door unlocking it and going in. I stood there looking at the stairs debating if I really wanted to go up them and see what the fuck was going on, before I could think my legs was moving up the stairs and I walked to the room where I could clearly hear moaning. I opened the door and walked in and stood there and my heart felt like it was ripped out of my chest I saw Chris fucking Kendra.
“Shit this shit feels good baby” Chris moaned I stood there and no tears came out I stood there more so in shock. Til I finally was able to say something.
“OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD CHRIS, CHRIS” I screamed and this made them stop and Chris looked at Kendra and then looked back and saw me standing there.
“Shit Bae, wait” he said moving off of Kendra who grabbed the cover pulling it over her. Chris grabbed his sweat pants putting them on.
“CHRIS HOW COULD YOU” I screamed and took my ring off and throw it at him and took off out the room, I don’t even remember my feet touching the stairs or even going out the door, I could hear Chris calling my name. I didn’t even want to look at him, let alone talk to him. He broke my heart, just like the rest of them did. I was on the verge of tears, and I got in my car and took off not looking back to see if I saw Chris or not I drove all the way to my Mom and Pat’s house which was a hour and a half drive there. Once I got in the house I walked in then I dropped to the floor and just cried, trying to catch my breath.
“Erin what has happened?” my Mom said rushed over to me, helping me up off the floor.
“He… He” I couldn’t talk; I just broke down into more floods of tears.
“Come here Erin, it’s okay baby” my Mom said as she cuddled me, holding me tight. After half an hour of crying, I finally calmed myself down. We sat on the couch and I took medicine for my headache that occurred from crying too much. My eyes were red and puffy and I sat there.
“Tell me Erin what’s wrong please” my Mom said, patting my shoulder. I nodded and took a deep breath.
“Chris is cheating on me with that bitch Kendra” I said as I tilted my head back, biting my lip, trying to stop myself from crying again.
“No, Erin no” my Mom said
“Yes I just left his house where he was fucking that bitch, mommy” I cried and my Mom pulled me into a tight hug and Pat walked in looking at us.
“What’s wrong?” Pat asked
“Erin just caught Chris cheating on her at his old place.” My Mom said and Pat nodded and turned around picking up the keys to my car and leaving the house.
Tumblr media
KIDRED
I was at Chris’s house his old place it was me, Mijo, Keeis, Aaron, Jamal and Gonzo I don’t know where Hood and Austin was but Chris called us and told us what happen I couldn’t believe it we was all standing on the balcony Chris was smoking a blunt and I was just in shock that he was fucking that girl knowing she was only using him, but for him to cheat on Erin I never saw that shit coming.
“She won’t even answer her phone and let me explain” Chris said.
“You really think she should come on are you that stupid?” Mijo asked looking at him.
“Man whatever that’s my wife man I love her” he said
“Well you got a hell of a way of showing it” Mijo said  shaking his head.
“Where Hood and Austin at?” he asked
“I don’t known” I said shrugging mu shoulders.
“I think they with Erin right now” Keeis said. I guess it’s clear to see who’s side they are on with this. We heard the door open and close.
“That must be them” I said then Pat came walking fast towards us more so towards Chris and drew his fist back and punched Chris twice in the face.
“PAT NO” we all yelled and tried to stop him but it didn’t work he just shook us off like it wasn’t nothing, he then punch Chris 2 more time then picked him up and hung him over the balcony, I never seen Pat like this and I never seen Chris so scared he was screaming for Pat not to drop him.
“YOU THINK IT’S OKAY TO CHEAT ON MY DAUGHTER AND BREAK HER HEART HUH. I WENT TO BAT FOR YOU SAYING YOU WAS A GOOD GUY AND YOU CHANGED AND YOU FUCKING CHEAT I SHOULD DROP YOUR ASS RIGHT NOW, FUCK YOU” Pat yelled while he held Chris over the balcony threatening to drop him.
“Pat don’t he ain’t worth you going to prison for” Mijo said in a rather calm voice while the rest of us was freaking out. I guess what he said made sense to him cause he pulled Chris back over and dropped him to the floor and left not before punching him one more time and walking out and Mijo left with him, Chris sat there putting his head in his hands and cried.

ERIN
The day after I was at the house the kids was taking a nap and I was in the room with Blair, Marie, Zaria, Dani, Kae and Rihanna. Of course they all knew what happen and came by the house to sit with me and be with me.
“I’m so tired of this tired of this man lying to me about everything and I’m not this person who let’s someone brain wash them, my mother taught me better than this. And I don’t wanna go thru this no more. I mean he gotta give a damn he got to but I’m so sick of his lies and his bullshit I won’t go on believing him anymore this whole marriage had been a lie he’s been seeing another bitch on the side for months, fucking months and the motherfucker got sloppy with the shit, I mean he haves 2 phones what motherfucker leaves the phone in their pants pocket unlocked and have this bitch texting you and sending your dumbass pictures like where the fuck they do that at.” I cried
“You will get thru this and you will bounce back from this and become a stronger person because of it” Kae said
“I got a little bit of time left on this earth and it won’t be wasted on him, HIM on FUCKING HIM I’ve fucking had it, HAD IT fuck him. He will see I’m not the one to be fucking with I got something for his cheating ass.” I said wiping my tears.
“Erin wait breath” Rihanna said
“I trusted him and I feel like he played me, played the fuck out of me. If Chris thinks there’s a tiny glimmer of hope for us he’s sadly mistaken. I was always hungry for love. Just once, I wanted to know what it was like to get my fill of it – to be fed so much love I couldn’t take any more. Just once. You know I waited up all night but Chris wasn’t even man enough to come home and face me” I say
“I’m so sorry Erin” Marie says and I look at my phone.
“Mail box full, I bet it is” I say
“No time like the present” Blair says
“No I don’t wanna hear anything from him.“ I say. "I can’t believe him like really I’ve been too good to him, so good and he cheats on me with that, with her like really I can’t believe this. I gave him my heart I gave him 4 babies and she was able to take my fucking husband, whenever she wanted” I aid
“Not trying to make light of what he did but the pictures was it just her sending them?” Zaria asked
“No it was pictures he took of her” I said and went to the phone opened it up showing different pictures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Oh My God no Chris” Blair said as she walked away from me.
“Wow I can’t believe him” Teyana said
“This not ok, it’s not the worst part is he wouldn’t even come home to face me, to talk about it to explain himself nothing, nothing at all” I said
“Waan, Waan” Gavroche cried on the baby monitor and I left the room and went to him and just held him and broke down in tears.
*2 WEEKS LATER*
Tumblr media
CHRIS
I stayed at my old place I haven’t spoken or seen Erin since that day. I did call her but she didn’t answer I fucked up, I know it but I guessed I’d give her sometime, to cool off then I’ll go and talk to her. Right now I was headed to my lawyer’s office he called and told me to come by.
And my face has healed up, from the assault from Pat and lets just say he did what he did as a father to protect his daughter. I would do the samething to protect my girls but a week ago, I got a call from him and he quit as my bodyguard. I didn’t see that coming to be honest, and I haven’t heard from Hood, Austin or Mijo after what happen. When Mijo left I didn’t hear from him at all, I called all of them but they didn’t answer. I guess I know where their loyalty lies. Once at my lawyer’s office we greeted each other and he handed me some paper work.
“What’s this?” I asked and I looked at it.
“It’s divorce papers Erin’s lawyer faxed them to me yesterday” Mark said
“WHAT? No, no” I said
“We can contest it” Mark said
“No in that pre nup that her ass wrote said that if we wanna get a divorce we have to first spend a week together to see if we can’t work it out. That’s what she wrote in it. So that’s what we’re going to do, so tell her lawyer to let Erin know she has to do it and I’ll see her in my house in Virginia tomorrow” I said and left the office. She has to give me this week and I know I’ll get her to forgive me and give me another chance cause I can’t lose my family over some bitch.

Les Misérables (2012) Review
Tumblr media
“To love another person is to see the face of God.”
Raw but beautiful, gritty but with a heavy dose of spectacle, Les Misérables is an amazing achievement for director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) that largely, but not entirely, lives up to the hype. How's that for nutshelling?

Before I begin here, I have to tell you all something truly shocking. I’ve never seen “Les Misérables” performed on stage. I know, I know. It’s crazy. In my defense, well, actually I really don’t have anything to say in my defense.
This summer I think I made up for it, however, by reading the book. The whole book. Every word of the book including the three chapters about the history and geography of the Parisian sewer system. I’m not being funny. They’re in there. And they’re about as interesting as they sound. I’m very glad I read the book, however, because it got me genuinely excited to see the movie. The story is much more than the handful of songs I’d heard before. It’s beautiful tale of redemption and love, set to truly wonderful music.
This version also boasts a truly wonderful cast including Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Helena Bonham Carter. Also, Russell Crowe is in it. This was the first musical ever done with the actors singing their parts live, not lip syncing to track. It turned out fantastic, particularly for the more emotionally wrought scenes. “I Dreamed a Dream” and “On My Own” were both as amazing as you could expect, and I was surprised at how affecting Hugh Jackman’s performance of “Valjean’s Soliloquy” was.
Other favorite performances include “Master of the House,” which was absolutely hilarious (except the bit with the cat... gross) and the finale which had me crying oh so hard. “Do You Hear the People Sing?” always gets me. I’m seriously misting up just thinking about it.
I don’t think I can overstate how good Anne Hathaway’s performance was. I love how un-actressy she let herself look. Dirty, red, tired, and sickly: most actresses would have balked at allowing themselves to be tossed up on Imax looking thus. Not to mention that she actually shaved her head for the part. More impressive was that fact that Hathaway’s performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” was from one take, with no cutting. Apparently she did twenty of them in a row before Hooper made her stop. They used number four.
Hathaway reportedly did not eat for thirteen days to achieve Fantine’s gaunt frame (in addition to her months of austere dieting). Jackman deprived himself of water for thirty-six hours to make his cheeks look sunken. As much as I hate aggrandizing this sort of self-abuse, I have to say it was kind of worth it. The were both absolutely fantastic.
Amanda Seyfried’s Cosette was relatively vapid and uninteresting, which is how she is written, so kudos to her for that. Seyfried was very good in the final scene, and to her credit, I didn’t once quote Mean Girls in my head. (“There’s a thirty percent chance that it’s already raining”). Eddie Redmayne was a pleasant surprise. He’s been doing theatre in England for quite a while, but, not living there, I’d never heard of him. He did a very good job (excepting the scene where Jean Valjean confesses his past and Marius sits there with a stupid grin on his face). And, can I just say, hello hottie! I mean, seriously. Gorgeous man.
Also new to me was Samantha Barks, who plays Éponine. She was fantastic. There had been rumors that the role might have been taken by Lea Michele or Taylor Swift. Can I just thank whoever made the decision to nix Princess Glee and Princess Teardrops on My Guitar? Don’t get me wrong, I love Taylor Swift (and would kill for her wardrobe and a tailor to fit it to someone half a foot shorter), but the role is a difficult one. I just don’t think she has the raw acting talent the role requires.
I expected to see this film and weep continuously throughout the whole thing, exiting the theater emotionally exhausted and slightly dehydrated. I did cry (a lot). But I also laughed. Hard. Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter stole every damn scene they were in. And did so hilariously. I’m not a fan of Baron Cohen’s, but he was perfectly cast in this role. Helena Bonham Carter is always magnificent, even when Tim Burton’s not directing.
Of course, every film has its flaws. May I present to you: Russell Crowe. Unlike many, my problem with his performance wasn’t his relatively weak singing voice. I feel like in a movie with such gritty performances, imperfection in song would have been tolerated. He just added nothing to the character. He wasn’t acting so much as reciting (or rather, singing) his lines. Javert is an intensely interesting and conflicted character, obsessed with the capture of Jean Valjean and obsessed with his position in society as an upholder of the law. Crowe’s interpretation was weak, even boring. It was sad. There were rumors that Gerard Butler was going to be cast as Javert, which I think would have been an improvement. Ah, well, no crying over spilt milk.
I love the interpretation of the Friends of the ABC as silly, idealistic boys. It makes the whole June Rebellion much more tragic, and it’s probably more accurate. If you’re off to see the movie and you don’t know much about the time period, I highly recommend doing a bit of research. The politics are somewhat confusing and the film spends much more time on its characters than explaining what Enjolras and Marius were trying to accomplish and why. That would have been a different film, and probably a less musical one. Wikipedia ‘June Rebellion.’ It’s well worth your time.
As for the movie’s much-hyped Oscar chances, I make these predictions: it will be nominated for Best Picture but lose (probably to Lincoln). Hugh Jackman may or may not get nominated for Best Actor but will not win (Daniel Day-Lewis has that wrapped up), and Anne Hathaway will (and most definitely should) win for Best Supporting Actress. Also, they’ll probably win Best Original Song, even though “Suddenly” is not fantastic and did not flow with the rest of the music very well.
I highly recommend the film to everyone with the caveat that you probably will cry, so bring some tissues. Oh, and, because I’m a giant nerd, here’s a summation of the plot I found on the internet:

#1, #37, & #40 For the musical theater ask thing!
thank u for asking these!!!!!
1. favorite guilty pleasure musical?
uhhh it’s not a typical guilty pleasure but i HATE telling people that “floyd collins” is in my top favorites because it just makes me sound WILDLY pretentious. like oh, yeah, i like newsies, but i like this folk/bluegrass musical that ran off broadway for 25 performances before closing more
37. musical movie you enjoy?
meet me in st louis!!!!!!!! the way “the trolley song” is done never fails to fill my brain with serotonin. also i lowkey love the les mis movie. russel crowe’s singing is. regrettable which is sad bc i think he ACTED javert well, he just... can’t sing. which sucks because javert has some of the most iconic parts in Anything Ever
40. you hate (trope/characteristic/plot point) but (show) is the exception
i hate guys pestering girls into liking them, but aaip (the musical) is the exception! mainly because jerry isn’t really pestering lise into liking him??? they both already know that they like each other, and she makes it pretty evident immediately that she’s held back by her circumstances rather than disliking him. also like..... dude when everyone’s dancing in “beginner’s luck” and lise is staring out at all of them and giggling and smiling my whole heart melts. it’s also noteworthy that lise is NEVER afraid of jerry-- the only one of the trio that she’s ever afraid of is henri, and she’s less afraid of HIM than she is of him finding out that she’s in love with jerry.
(holy shit, y’all, max von essen and leanne cope OWN the “something wonderful has happened” bit. complete uneasiness on lise’s side because she’s afraid of him knowing, a discomfort with their relationship on henri’s side that leaks through into what Should feel like sweet banter being just a little Off.. it only takes three seconds to perfectly illustrate how they’re both desperately trying to pretend that things are normal and that they romantically love each other)
anyways. the combo of good writing, really fun and well-directed scenes, and EXCELLENT performances from robbie fairchild and leanne cope make aaip the exception to my general rule because it... well, it doesn’t really fit the classification in the first place. lise already likes jerry, she just needs to be shown some three-brain-cell shenanigans to not worry about her other life
anyways!!!!!! that went into me rambling about aaip. thank u for asking these!!! they’re a lot of fun fsjdhsjgds (psst @ everyone else... if u want to see some more rambles about stuff i like... ask me musical questions from the list i just rbed please)

could you tell me your opinion on phantom of the opera? i never got into it bc since i was little i always saw it as this boring adult-y weird thing but.. now i dont know??
Okay, so, bear in mind I only have a passing knowledge of the original novel -- general verdict is that it’s pulpy and ridiculous, but still enjoyable. Most of my knowledge comes from the Broadway musical. It’s melodramatic and full of spectacle and has its problems, but I really enjoy it. The music is just gorgeous, and the relationship between Christine and the Phantom is genuinely fascinating. I’d highly recommend watching the 25th anniversary recording -- it also happens to have my favorite cast! (Everyone has an opinion on which recording and which cast is the best, but in my opinion, it’s all good. But if I haaaaaaaad to pick, the 25th anniversary album wins, easily.) My favorite songs from the show are “The Point of No Return,” “Angel of Music,” and, of course, the title number. It’s also one of those musicals where, on the album, the songs flow perfectly into each other most of the time, which I LOVE.
Also, I know a lot of people really like the 2004 movie adaptation of the musical, but I haaaaaate it. (With the exception of that movie’s Raoul, who is actually really likable. And Carlotta, as always, is great.) And this is coming from someone who really loves Emmy Rossum -- she’s a good singer and a great actress, but she wasn’t right for Christine. I’ve enjoyed Gerard Butler in other things, but he can. Not. Sing. Casting him as Erik is right up there with casting Russel Crowe as Javert on the are you kidding me? scale. So, proceed with caution.
Also, Erik/Christine vs. Christine/Raoul vs. Christine/No One wars get ugly. Be careful. (Myself, I’m more enamored with Erik/Christine because they’re more interesting, and Erik is really compelling, but I’m well aware it’s NOT a healthy relationship, and if Raoul makes Christine happy, then she should be with Raoul. And to be fair to Raoul, how likable he is depends VERY greatly on his actor, as it’s easy to play him as either an 1800s fuckboy or just really boring. As a character, he’s fine.)
TL;DR: It’s good. It’s not for kids, mainly because kids are unlikely to follow the story (I know I didn’t when I first heard it when I was like 7 or 8), but there’s a reason all the sad teenage girls and all the housewives love this show. The music is wonderful, watch the 25th anniversary performance since it’s recorded, and if you have the chance to see it live, DO IT. And take me with you.

Play by Play: Les Misérables
Like a bolt from the blue, it’s time for another movie adaptation review. I know it’s been far too long since I’ve written one of these, probably long enough that any of you who are reading this probably forgot about it already. Nevertheless, I intend to pick these back up again with much more gusto.
That said, let us get to today’s review.
Les Misérables, the musical based off the book written by Victor Hugo, of Hunchback fame, is most likely one of the more well-known play to film adaptations out there, considering how high profile it was when the movie was released. Speaking of high profile, nearly everyone in this movie is a very large actor. From Anne Hathaway to Helena Bonham Carter, this film is filled to the brim with talents.
To summarize the plot, Les Misérables is the story of the life of a man called Jean Valjean, played by Hugh Jackman in the movie, a poor thief, turned faithful Christian after being released, as he tries to protect his daughter Cosette from both his past, and his present, all while being pursued by Inspector Javert, played by the infamous Russel Crowe, a ruthless policeman who puts the law above all. Will the movie portray this endless hunt the way it deserves to be shown? We’ll find out after the break.
Now I remember seeing this movie in theaters, thinking that this was probably going to be the closest I would ever get to see a play of this caliber. Honestly there are parts of me that are okay with that, but parts of me that are a little glad that I was wrong. Let’s get into the thick of it then.
Since 90% of the focus that this movie got was because of the actors involved with this picture, let’s start with them. I enjoyed most of the choices in this movie. Hugh Jackman really gets to prove his musical chops with Valjean, going right up there with the best of them. Anne Hathaway was quite a fantastic Fantine, delivering her one big number with every bit of emotion that you’d expect from both Fantine and Hathaway. While some people find them a little overused for these types of roles, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Helena Bonham Carter pair quite well together as Mr. and Mrs. Thenardier. You can’t even complain about the film’s Eponine, as she was the current Eponine in concert and on Broadway.
As for pacing, well, let’s just say that even with the length of the movie, things tend to feel a little rushed. Les Misérables is already a really long book, and a musical of fairly decent length, so while they did nearly every song in the musical, and hit nearly every plot point, things run fairly quickly. Seriously, Anne Hathaway was done and gone so fast you could almost miss her if you went to the bathroom during Lovely Ladies. Speaking of Anne Hathaway, one of the things the movie does right is placing Fantine’s ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ right after she sells her body is rather poignant, even more so in the play when it happens before said selling.
When it comes to the air of realism that movies tend to lend to musicals, the movie does its job well, although I’d say a lot of work was put into things that didn’t need said work, like that of the ship pulled in at the beginning of the film. Other than that, none of it really distracts or contrasts with the movie or play. Which is a good thing, as movies like RENT can show.
Now, I know that some of you are wondering when a certain something is going to be mentioned, and I decided to wait until the end to get to this. I am of course talking about Russel Crowe’s performance of Javert. It took me a bit to decide where I stand on this, since Javert is one of my favorite characters in the play. And honestly, I can’t defend him. Russel Crowe, while by no means unable to play the character type of Javert, does no justice to his singing. Javert’s few songs are strong, passionate, and at the end, scared and vulnerable. Crowe decided to take the shout-singing approach to Javert, and it’s one I can’t accept. After hearing multiple variations of Javerts, his is by far my least favorite. I don’t know what they were thinking once he started singing, but it’s there and he is the weakest singer by far.
To conclude this review, I really enjoyed the movie when I first saw it. After seeing live performances, and listening to a number of versions of the musical, I can say that it’s probably best to just see it live, as Les Misérables the movie is not the definitive version. Even if it’s only down to time crunching and Crowe’s performance, it’s enough to drag down the overall quality of the film. Javert’s role in the play is probably the biggest after Jean Valjean, and to see him so poorly done is disheartening. So it’s okay, but probably best to see it live.
