Isn't it amazing that they never met before this scene, they know they're on opposing sides at first, yet this heated exchange...broke both of them?
And it's because Lyra coming into their lives as a beacon of hope in such a bleak landscape, already began to shake them and changed them at a foundational level. Right under their noses. Even if they couldn't really put that into words yet.
Their daemons do something we've not seen up till this scene: initiate physical contact to soothe them. And it is received for once because Lee and Marisa have chosen to be vulnerable.
Hester, who has probably been silenced too many times with a quip from Lee, is heard at a deep emotional level for once. Marisa's nameless daemon, who she physically abused on a regular basis, chances it by reaching out his hand and for once isn't shoved away.

I'm rewatching His Dark Materials and I might need to take a break for a few days, this story has too much power over my emotions.
#like listen. i genuinely think those books are what made me experience what it meant to be heartbroken for the first time#i just watched the scene where Lyra leaves Pan before the crossing#and the show didn't really even nail it you know#it lacks the visceral sense of despair and impossibity the books have#but i am still crying like a baby and clutching my plushy (which btw still the same plushy from when i first read the books)#I'm not ready to watch the ending yet#i think I'll stop the rewatch for a while and go read some fluffy fix it fic instead#his dark materials#hdm bbc

The genius that was the costume and lighting departments coordinating with one another for these points in Lyra and Marisa's arcs: for Marisa, the red and blue colours are inverted to reflect her internal change.
And both scenes involve her endeavoring to save Lyra. In the 3x05 scene she is dressed in the colour and design that Lyra was made to wear when she was captured and brought to Bolvangar
