Ah. Fun. Two thoughts

A) eggs are artificial, and artificial materials break down. You know, rust, oxidation, blooming, etc. And the quests insure the breakdown is prevented/ slowed down.

B) the eggs were kidnapped, but they dont know about it/ forgot/ got given different memories (as the feds do sometimes) thats why theyre all dirty and scuffed up and stuff without knowing why

Option Silly) the whole model is the shell therefore the whole thing changes when they hatch
