If you're new to gardening, then you'll hear a lot about hardiness zones, but there's more to it than that.
Hardiness zone *only* tells you about how cold you can expect your coldest temperatures in winter to be, but people try to use it for a lot more than that. Here's one example for the US:
Tumblr media
Another thing that's important to know if you want to grow perennials, particularly things like gooseberries and apples, is how many chill hours (iirc, hours between 45f and freezing) you get, which is shown in this next map:
Tumblr media
I'm guessing North Dakota is in that little bubble because they spend so much of winter below freezing, which doesn't count toward chill hours.
A third consideration, which comes in handy when someone who's used to Texas thinks you should be able to grow papayas near Seattle because it's also zone 8 for hardiness, is the heat zone you're in. Heat zone measures how many days above 85f a location got, historically. Either last year was a huge anomaly (let's hope) or this desperately needs to be updated:
Tumblr media
When you combine these three, it gives you a better idea of what you can grow, and what will thrive in your area.
By the way, here's a Chill hours chart from One Green World nursery:

Trego: Hardiness Zone 5a
The USDA has updated plant hardiness zones, and despite last winter’s impressive cold, we’ve jumped up a zone (to 5a from 4b in 2012; the average low went up by 6 degrees) Hardiness zones are a (partial) climate description that’s been in existence for a bit over a century, though the government didn’t get involved in it until the ’60s (At which point they proceeded to do so badly for a few…

best friend - jeff hardy
Tumblr media
2001! jeff hardy x gn!reader
word count: 1.2k
warnings: mentions of (scripted) violence?, reader is younger than matt and jeff, best friends to lovers trope
you watched from ringside with wide eyes as your best friend of 10 years, jeff hardy, walked across the top of multiple ladders in the centre of the ring, before toppling to the canvas below, somehow landing on his feet. you breathed a sigh of relief, but your rapid heart rate didn’t let up as the match continued on. splintered tables and steel ladders littered the ground surrounding the ring, along with the barely moving bodies of the other tag teams. you felt like a spectator in your own body, like you weren’t really there, as you watched the 6 men toss eachother around for what felt like hours. jeff climbed back up the ladder and got a hold of the belts, before the ladder was pulled from under his feet, leaving him dangling high above the ring.
positioning another ladder in the center of the ring, edge climbed nearly to the top before spearing jeff mid-air, the two men plummeting to the mat below before laying there motionless. you had to physically held back from jumping into the ring to make sure he was okay, and if you weren’t panicked out of your mind you would have mentally thanked the official for not allowing you to interfere, or worse, throw the match. lita, one of your closest friends and also the girlfriend of jeff’s older brother matt, rubbed your back reassuringly, but you knew she was just as worried as you were. for the remainder of the match, you clutched the apron so hard your knuckles turned white, until finally christian grabbed the belt, ending the match.
as soon as you heard the bell, you slid under the bottom rope, immediately checking on jeff to make sure he was okay. he mumbled almost inaudibly that he was alright, as your hands frantically but gently checked him for signs of injury, before he began to sit up. jeff winced, holding his ribs as he got himself to a sitting position, letting you pull him into your arms in a hug filled with relief.
“are you okay?” you asked desperately, as jeff returned the hug, placing a kiss on the top of your head before you pulled away, cradling his face in your hands, his long red hair dripping with sweat as your brushed it aside.
“i’m okay, i promise,” he assured you, his southern accent peeking through as he spoke. you tilted his head to the side to kiss his cheek, and steadied him as he tried to stand, grateful to have you as a crutch for balance.
a few hours later, jeff had been checked over by the medical team and deemed fine, miraculously having sustained no serious injuries during what was sure to become a historic match for the ages. you were curled up next to him on the couch in the hardyz dressing room, waiting for it to be time to head to the next venue. your head rested on jeff’s chest, tangled in each others arms and you slept soundly. jeff’s attention was drawn to the sound of the door opening, and he placed a finger to his lips, signalling to his older brother to be quiet. matt obliged as he silently sat in a chair across from jeff, who’s tattooed fingers absentmindedly traced little patterns onto your back.
“you’d think we’d be the ones sleepin after that match,” matt joked, and jeff smiled down at you. “i guess it takes a lotta energy to worry about your dumbass all the time.”
“ain’t just me, you’re out there jumping off ladders an shit too,” jeff laughed, but his eyebrows furrowed together slightly.
“yeah, but you’re the one they haven’t let go of since the match ended. doctors could barely examine you they were clingin’ on to ya so tight,” matt teased, and jeff was worried you’d woken up as you made a small noise, but only snuggled closer to him and continued sleeping. “jesus jeff, quit droolin,” matt laughed. the younger hardy looked up at his older brother, unable to wipe the smile off his face.
“man, is it that obvious?” he asked sheepishly.
“jeff, i’m your brother; of course it’s obvious to me,” matt said. “but it’s pretty obvious that kid’s in love with you too.” jeff held you a little tighter, and you mumbled slightly as you awoke, eyes opening slowly as they adjusted to the light.
“hey sleepyhead,” jeff smiled, and your heart skipped a beat when you realized where you were. it was a common occurrence for you and jeff to wind up tangled on the couch on asleep on each other shoulders in the backseat driving from show to show, but it still have you butterflies every time you woke up in his arms.
“hey- is it time to go?” you asked, sitting up slightly to jeff’s disappointment as he let you out of his grip. he was relieved when you stayed close beside him however, keeping yourself tucked under his arm.
“not yet. y’all want anything from catering? i’m gonna grab a bite,” matt offered, and you turned your attention to him, only now realizing that he was in the room.
“no, thank you,” you replied as he stood to leave, jeff shaking his head as he also wasn’t interested.
“suit yourselves. be back in a bit.” he tapped jeff on the shoulder as he passed by, the sound of the door confirming that he had in fact left the dressing room.
“tired?” jeff asked, and you nodded, snuggling back into his chest, and cussing him to laugh as he tightened his arms around you again.
“are you sure you’re okay? that spot was insane,” you asked, looking him in the face and searching his eyes for any sign of hesitation. jeff leaned forward and kissed the end of your nose, and you felt heat rising to your cheeks as he replied.
“i’m okay, i swear. it coulda been a lot worse than it was,” he said, and you nodded, finally accepting his answer.
“okay. promise me you’ll be careful though?”
“how long have we been best friends? shouldnt you know by now that’s not in my nature?” he teased, pinching your side by your ribs, sending both of you into a fit of laughter
“alright alright! please stop!” you begged, laughing all the while until jeff finally stopped pinching and tickling your sides, smiling at you. “what? why are you looking at me like that?” you asked, your stomach doing a flip as jeff’s hand grabbed the back of your head softly and pulled your face down until your lips met his. the kiss was soft and sweet, but full of all the love you had both bottled up for years. you pulled away in shock, staring into jeff’s hazel-green eyes.
“i’m sorry, i..i should’ve asked-“ he stuttered nervously.
“so ask me,” you interrupted, and his eyebrows raised in surprise before he cleared his throat.
“can i kiss you?” he asked sincerely, and you nodded in response, jeff crashing his lips onto yours immediately after receiving your permission. it felt as if the weight of a thousand bricks had lifted off of your shoulders; of course you had always loved jeff. how could you not?
pulling away, he placed one more soft kiss on your lips before doing. the same to your nose and forehead, and pulling you into his lap, your head resting in the crook of his neck.
“i love you,” he muttered into your hair, and you smiled, breathing in the scent of his freshly washed hair and the cologne that lingered on his skin.
“i love you more.”

Isekai Problems: Planting Roots
So what zones are your characters in?
Here I’m referring to the USDA plant hardiness zones for growing regions. There are similar maps for Europe; I saw one in a book on heritage roses once. So I’d guess other areas have made them as well. But the USDA’s the one I know best. It’s also the one I feel personally frustrated by, because I know it best.
Long story short. Hardiness zones are determined by the minimum temperatures the area reaches; you find Zone 1 and 2 up in inner Alaska, you find subtropical to tropical 9 and 10 in bits of Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. Plants can also be sorted by how heat tolerant they are, but freezing to death is a pretty good measure of where a plant can’t make it. If you look at a package of seeds marketed in the U.S., you’ll find the Hardiness Zone map on the back, often with suggested planting times.
However. Local weather patterns can make zones tricky.
Remember how I pointed out zone 9 in Florida? In fact, the Hardiness Zone map shows near the entire Gulf Coast as zone 9. If you look on a larger-scale and more finely detailed map, most of the near-shore will show up as zone 9a - not as warm as, say, central Florida at 9b.
Except that every two to three years there tends to be at least one hard freeze (temps dropping overnight below about 15 F), making the area technically zone 8b. So unless you’re lucky and have cut back and wrapped tender plants, all your banana trees and citrus go bye-bye.
And yet, because it’s not that cold every year, tulips and apple trees - any plants that need some cold dormancy - are likely to keel over too.
All of which means introducing new plants is always a roll of the dice. Can they take the cold and the heat?
If you’re going to introduce new crops, as characters sometimes do in isekai, have some idea about what conditions they need, and whether or not your new locale has them. Cochineal is one of the most beautiful, vibrant, colorfast reds in nature. But if you try to introduce it as a crop in, say, Siberia, when the cochineal scale insect lives on the warmth-loving Opuntia cactus... biologists and ecologists will have a sad. Really.
Likewise if you tried to grow Korean stone pines (nutritious seeds! Medicinal compounds!) in the fantasy equivalent of South Florida’s heat and humidity, people will talk.
You may have better luck with more conventional food crops. Rice, corn, wheat, potatoes - all of these have hundreds if not thousands of varieties, adapted for different conditions. There are rice varieties that tolerate salt enough to grow near shorelines, and a slow-growing, slime-shedding variety of ancient corn that hosts its own nitrogen-fixing bacteria; an awesomely useful feature usually only found in legumes. Human ingenuity and diligent searching may turn up or create a variety of a crop that can survive in what would normally be extreme conditions for that plant. But your story will feel more realistic if you make it clear you’re using magic or bioengineering to get oranges to survive in arctic tundra, or lingonberries in the Sahara. People have an idea of where plants flourish; putting them out of place without a good explanation dents suspension of disbelief.
Of course, temperature’s not the only consideration. Rainfall, soil minerals; is the earth acid or basic, sandy or heavy clay? All of these and more play a part. You don’t have to be an agronomist. Just check out some real-life analogues to what you’re working with to get ideas of what your characters need to do, and what curveballs you can throw at them.
And for goodness’ sake, if the original tamers of a crop grow it in a specific way that doesn’t use the whole field, don’t automatically assume it’s inefficient and you can do it better. Of such decisions are potato famines made....

New Hardiness Zone Map, New Climates
A new hardiness zone map has been released for growers for the first time in a decade, showing the impact of climate change. The plant hardiness zone map is a resource issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help all growers, from farmers to landscapers to backyard flower enthusiasts, know what will thrive in their region. It uses many factors, but the most important figure is the lowest…

At the Fanboy Expo this month on Saturday, apparently these 2 redneck white trash girls got into a fight near a professional wrestler's table.
The Hardy Boyz were at this Fanboy Expo, and I bet 5 bucks those girls were fighting near the Hardy Boyz, they were probably fighting over them too.
They were probably fighting over who gets to take a picture with them first.

Growing season and planting charts that are supposed to be helpful easy guides but don't specify what growing region they're for are so funny in how completely unhelpful and useless they are. Every time I see one I just think about the fact that strawberry season in FL is Dec-Feb, yet those type of charts always say early summer. Then where we currently live for example there is a blanket of snow on the ground until a week or two into May, but most of those charts say you should be a month or two into planting season for spring and starting summer crops by then. Like... WHAT ZONE ARE THESE CHARTS FOR? Clearly not the one I live in.

Speaking of fruit trees, my calamansi ended up dying (rip :c) which opens up space in my garden, so now I am wondering how well finger limes do in containers and if they can fruit in a gallon or two pot. 👀
This wouldn't be for theoretical food forests since they're probably not hardy, but they'd be a cool personal plant! They're weird Australian citruses with caviar-looking insides!

I don't really have a USDA hardiness zone because those numbers are representative of comparative annual minimum temperatures. This isn't as meaningful here. I think pretty much all of our country would be covered by about USDA hardiness zones 7–12... it's a warm place, overall. I'm not usually worried about plants living through the cold months, but I do get worried about how they're gonna go in a serious heat wave.
Today I learnt about the practice of bringing lavender and rosemary (and I'm sure others) indoors for winter, which is evidently advised in some places where it gets really cold, and which I've never heard of for what, here, seem like very (very) resilient perennials.
It must be such a different experience to be growing stuff in places where you get a lot of snow and hard frost?
On the one hand, there's a well defined growing season and you have that structure as a framework for planning what you do. I can watch my plants struggle along all winter if I like (and then get mad at myself when they don't grow well in their overnight chills and low daily sunlight.)
On the other hand, perennial plants become annuals in other places, and late or early frosts can really sour the whole year. Hmm.
