modern au where Steve and Billy have never hard launched their relationship online or put a label on it despite friends purposely asking ‘is that your bf?’ or ‘and they were roommates :)’ in the comments of their insta posts just to be annoying (the latter is Robin’s favourite)
finally they break their silence but the most people get from Steve is an insta story of a zoomed in pic of Billy’s forehead curl in the soft glow of the morning light on Feb 14th, captioned only with ‘🌹’ in the corner

The cake is a mess. It has broken in the middle and Steve tried to compensate by putting tons if vanilla frosting and sprinkles on top and now it's a sloggy pile of something.
He hopes it still tastes okay. He is good with pans and pots, but baking? There's flour all over the kitchen and in his hair. Ugh.
"Happy birthday," Steve says carefully.
Billy stares at the cake as if it offended him. Sure, it's nothing like the pretty cakes at the bakery, Steve knows that.
"How did you know?" Billy finally asks, brows furrowed.
"A little birdy told me."
Billy glares at him. "A shirtbird," he says flatly. "Should have known."
"Do you… want to try it?" Steve asks, when Billy just keeps watching the cake like a hawk.
"I don't do birthdays," Billy tells him.
Billy doesn't do a lot of things. Boyfriends, cuddling, a healthy lifestyle, love, and apparently birthdays.
Too bad Steve wakes up with a drooling Billy on his chest nearly every time, clinging to him like he's a teddy bear. Billy is a fucking liar.
"That's not a no," Steve explains to Billy and begins to cut the cake. "But I could always ask Dustin-"
"No way!" Billy grabs a piece of cake with his bare hands and puts it in his mouth.
Steve wants to kick himself for leaving the polaroid upstairs. He snorts. Billy glares at him with stuffed cheeks.
"So, you don't do concert tickets to Mötley Crüe either?" Steve asks, waving an envelope in front of his boyfriend's face.
Billy makes a muffled noise around the cake. His nostrils flare.
"I didn't really get that. Swallow, Billy," Steve says with a wink.
Billy's ears turn pink. Steve changes his opinion. The cake is perfect.
