Three years later
The EKG machine on your bedside beats steadily. You sit with your head leaned back against the pillow and turn slightly to the left, facing Philos’ dazzling sunset. It’s days like these where you feel especially fortunate to be alive.
“You seem to be doing better, Y/N.” Your doctor stands to your right, taking notes. You remain silent, absentmindedly fiddling with the monitor on your pointer finger.
“Although you should refrain from strenuous exercise from now on. I sent a note to the Academy to excuse you from physical ed. Keep taking your daily walks and the medicine we’ve prescribed you. There’s no problems with it still, right?”
Other than nausea and chronic headaches and a plethora of already listed shitty symptoms? “No. Nothing unusual.”
“Good.” You hear the smile in the doctor’s voice but remain facing the window. You can’t bring yourself to face her. She rests a hand on your shoulder and squeezes lightly.
“Keep it up, Y/N. You’re doing well. There haven’t been any significant changes for the worse, which is a good thing. You’ll get through this.”
You resist the urge to scoff out loud. This is probably the tenth doctor you’ve seen in your life; she sounds no different from the rest. Optimistic. Overly helpful. The fact is, no matter how many medications you’ve taken, treatments you’ve tried, or procedures you’ve put yourself through and pushed your body to the breaking point, nothing gives. You’ve accepted a while ago that there is no cure for this mysterious condition. No matter how advanced Philos’ technology has become, nothing will fix your heart. The only question is how much time you’ve got left, the prediction changing every visit. One time it was at least five years, the next indefinite. The diagnosis now is still that, which doesn’t reassure you.
“So, I’ll see you next month?” The doctor asks. You sense that she’s already turned halfway toward the door.
Wordlessly, you nod. You hear the door click open and close. Alone again, you release a breath you didn’t know you were holding in. You lightly pound your fist against your chest, breathing in deeply. Just a few more hours. Then you’ll be discharged and head back to your dorm to pass out for the night.
The weekend passes. Another gloomy day greets you as you head to school. In homeroom, you slip quietly into your desk, dump your bag next to you, and slump forward. Your crossed arms cover your mouth as you glance around the already bustling classroom. Inadvertently, your eyes wander over to Xavier’s desk.
