A Georgia boy was given an unexpected gift by a Hapeville police officer after someone reported him for trying to find work around the neighborhood.
The boy, in a suburb just south of Atlanta, intended to do yard work such as pulling weeds, cutting grass, and trimming hedges for neighbors. His goal was to save up money to purchase a PlayStation.
A nearby resident contacted police regarding the kid, intending to have him taken away.
Officer Colleran of the Hapeville Police Department arrived to speak with the boy, who expressed his desire to earn money to purchase a gaming system.
"The young man was polite, respectful, and truthful," Officer Colleran shared.
Colleran shared that he too is a passionate gamer and offered to assist the boy in achieving his goal. The officer coordinated with his department to present the boy with a PlayStation 5 and an online gaming gift card.
The two plan to continue their friendship online where they will band together in the gaming world.

Let's help Atlantans beat the high cost of car ownership by offering a better, more walkable future

This image shows part of the United Auto Recovery lot in Hapeville, just south of Atlanta (and this is only a section -- it goes on).
What you're looking at are repoed vehicles waiting for owners to pay lenders off and recover them.
To my eyes, it's also a picture of the need for affordable homes in transit-served density, where the expense of car ownership is less of a necessity and the threat of repossession is less present in peoples' lives.
The struggle of transportation costs is real, and it's getting worse every year.
According to a NY Times report, the average annual cost of new-car ownership rose to $12,182 this year due to increased "purchase prices, maintenance costs and finance charges." That's an incredible cost burden -- one that obviously hits lower-income drivers the hardest.
Too often, we demand car ownership by way of our unwalkable, sprawling urban designs which offer little alternative. We essentially enforce this burden.
Also from that NYT article:
"America’s dependence on automobiles means hefty bills, the risk of dangerous crashes and stress. And now, even with strong wage growth and elevated savings in recent years, high sticker prices and escalating interest rates are starting to take a toll: The share of borrowers moving into delinquency jumped sharply in late 2022 and early 2023"
When you read "borrowers moving into delinquency," understand that to also mean 'people who have little choice but struggle with car-ownership burdens because we aren't allowing them affordable homes in walkable neighborhoods rich with transit services'.
For a look at the savings we could allow residents in a less car-dependent, future version of Atlanta, take a look at this chart showing the difference between car ownership costs and annual transit-pass costs for the average Atlanta transit commuter (source: atltransit.ga.gov).
Of course, you have to multiply that cost of transit passes for each person in a house. But even if we can get to a level of walkability that allows two-car families to trim down to one car, that's a lot of savings.
We can do this. Bit by bit, we can use public tools like Invest Atlanta, and zoning reform, and the city's affordable housing fund, and the More MARTA program (and much more) to provide affordable homes in a compact, pedestrian-scaled setting that's easily served by transit routes.
It's crucial that we remain optimistic about our chances for success when it comes to creating a better Atlanta that lifts people out of the burdensome costs of car-centric places -- not just money, but also poor health outcomes and threats to safety.
So here's me, hoping for more hope in the the new year. Let's find it and cling to it in 2024, and make great strides in building better places. Don't get held down by the oppressive weight of car-dependent, inequitable, unsustainable built environments. Hold tight to a vision for change & progress.

"I didn't know him"
The keep-it-real fairy tale would reach a darker chapter. Rumors abounded that Biggie had cheated on his wife with rapper and protégé Lil Kim, then a member of Junior M.A.F.I.A., and Charli Baltimore, a lesser known rapper discovered by Biggie. Faith, who never let her personal life interfere with her career, focused on work. "I still had to maintain my daughter and get her to school. I was still mother hen," she says.
In 1996 Faith found it hard to turn down an offer to record a song with Tupac Shakur for a self-negotiated $25,000. Now she knows this was not the best move. "I had no idea that Tupac had been signed to Death Row Records," she writes. "He had only been out of jail a few days when we met at the Hollywood Athletic Club. I hadn't yet heard that Suge Knight had bailed him out in return for signing to the label and immediately recording an album. If I had known, I would have never in a million years agreed to it."
Her decision led to a decade-long rumor that she slept with Shakur, which she denies. Even today she becomes unsettled by the topic of Tupac, and when pushed to talk about him, a clearly rattled Faith parses her words carefully. "I didn't know him. I don't know what (motivated him). That's like speaking for someone, and with him being dead, I definitely don't like trying. I'm glad I got through it the best I could." Unfortunately, she would not see a dime of the money from the recording. She says he told her if she wanted the money, she would have to "suck his d**ck," and feeling humiliated, she left.
By that time her marriage to Biggie was strained. She once caught another woman in his hotel room. That same year she picked up her belongings and left their Brooklyn home altogether, opting to live out of hotels with young Chyna in tow, crashing on the couch at the group 112's Manhattan apartment, while planning to rent her own place in a Manhattan high-rise. During their separation, she would discover he was having an affair with Lil Kim after Kim made a bold appearance on Wendy Williams's popular radio show. Biggie had asked Faith to befriend Kim, all the while not knowing there was an affair. Faith called the radio show afterward and defended herself.
Still in love, she and Biggie had occasional romantic reunions, which resulted in the birth of their son Christopher. "Everybody that knows me and knew Big knew that we had a bond," said Faith, who was confident that they would patch things up - until that fateful March night in 1997 when Biggie was murdered. Eventually, Faith returned to recording and began dating Todd Russaw, a friend who had comforted her on the night of Biggie's death.
"I had four kids and I owe the government"
In 2005, when Evans signed with Capitol Records, she had been married to Russaw for seven years. But life wasn't exactly drama-free. In January 2004, she and Russaw were arrested in Hapeville, Georgia, with marijuana and cocaine in their car. The couple agreed to enter a 13-week drug intervention program, and after completion the charges were dropped. Still, rumors persisted that she was on drugs, which she addressed in, "Again," the first single from her album The First Lady.

So, I was a kid growing up in Hapeville Georgia in the early 1960s. On many Sundays after Mass my family would go to the Dwarf House for an after-fast breakfast. As little kids, my sibs and I liked this because of the small "Dwarf" entrance doors on either side of the main entrance. One SUNDAY, after Mass, we went to the Dwarf House, and the owner, Truett Cathy came out and said he had a new chicken sandwich he wanted us to try , which he called the Chick-fil-A! On a fricken SUNDAY???

DA Fani Willis Disqualification Ruling Expected This Week
Judge Scott McAfee of Fulton County Superior Court
is expected to rule this week on whether special prosecutor Nathan Wade, who had a romantic relationship with district attorney Fani Willis, should be excluded from its investigation and subsequent indictment of former President Donald Trump.
After listening to final arguments for three hours on March 1st from lawyers for Willis and a few of Trump’s co-defendants, McAfee stated that he intended to rule on the matter “over the next two weeks.”
The Georgia presidential primary on March 12th may take effect while McAfee is still deliberating because the two-week period ends on Friday, March 15th.
In August 2023, Willis, the district attorney, filed indictments against the 45th president and his colleagues on charges of allegedly attempting to rig Georgia’s 2020 election results.
Meanwhile, Willis is being accused of abusing public funds and crossing ethical boundaries while having romantic involvement with Wade, the prosecutor she hired for the case.
Three weeks ago, the criminal indictment of the country’s 45th president was shaken by two days of frequently fiery testimony that was broadcast throughout the nation. Both Willis and Wade claimed during their disqualification hearing that their romantic relationship had ended after Willis hired Wade.
However, two weeks ago, a court filing from Trump’s Georgia attorneys revealed that Wade’s messages and phone calls had been examined by a private investigator. The records revealed that the pair exchanged thousands of messages and phone calls in the months prior to Wade’s employment, exemplifying possible perjury.
Charles Mittlestadt’s report, which was highlighted in Friday’s court filing, showed “more than 2,000 voice calls and just under 12,000 text messages exchanged over the 11-month period in 2021,” according to the application CellHawk, which maps and analyzes cell phone data. “A heat map … highlights the interaction patterns that demonstrate a prevalence of calls made in the evening hours.”
Wade made at least 35 visits to a condo in Hapeville, Georgia, where Willis was residing at the time, according to Mittlestadt’s inquiry. Robin Bryant-Yeartie, the owner of the property, also attested that the two had a relationship prior to Wade’s employment.
Furthermore, Wade stated during his deposition that he had only paid Willis a maximum of ten visits at the property prior to his hiring in November 2021.
Wade’s former legal partner and divorce attorney, Terrence Bradley, admitted in court that he is unsure of the exact date that Wade started dating Willis. Bradley also stated that he was unaware of the exact moment he learned about the relationship, in response to persistent questioning from Ashleigh Merchant, an attorney for one of Trump’s co-defendants in the racketeering charge.
Early in January, Michael Roman, one of Trump’s co-defendants, and his lawyer, Ashleigh Merchant, filed a court document accusing Willis and special prosecutor Wade of having a romantic relationship.
This marked the beginning of the questioning.
Roman, a former assistant in the White House, oversaw Trump’s election-day operations. Roman has entered a not guilty plea to the prosecution’s claim that he was involved in attempts to present a phony list of electors following the 2020 election.
According to Roman’s court petition, Wade utilized a portion of his district attorney’s office pay to travel with Willis, and the two enjoyed opulent vacations together. Additionally, Merchant asserts that she found evidence of Willis and Wade’s travel companionship “outside of court filings.”
A meeting of the Fulton County Board of Ethics regarding two allegations filed against Willis had been canceled. The complaints were listed on the agenda when the special meeting was called, but Chairman Daraka Satcher stated prior to the meeting that since Willis and the other district attorneys are state officers rather than county officials, the board is not authorized to hear the complaints.
Steven Kramer, a resident of Fulton County, and Gregory Mantell, the creator of the Substack site Investigative News Service, filed the two charges against Willis.
Additionally, this week, Merchant was the first individual to receive a subpoena from the recently established special Georgia Senate committee appointed to look into Willis.
A large portion of the evidence presented in court thus far was covered by Merchant, including bank statements demonstrating that Willis and Wade went on cruises and vacations together while pursuing the case, phone records demonstrating Wade frequently stayed overnight at Willis’ then-home, and billing invoices that displayed a 24-hour day and disclosed calendar information such as a meeting between Willis and Vice President Kamala Harris just months prior to the indictment being issued.
