The Upsides & Suburbia Anniversary Tour Livestream
Venue:
Streaming Live From The House Of Blues In Boston and Receiving The Broadcast From My Bedroom/Kitchen
(03.22.2022)
Stats:
Second Livestream for The Wonder Years, but I have seem them Live and In-Person 1 and 1/2 times I believe. (That half if for Warped Tour 2011 when I only caught the end of their set where they played Don’t Let Me Cave In and that was enough for me at the time.)
Note: This stream did not include the sets of the opening acts, however they did make a cameo during The Wonder Years set, so I can’t talk about what I didn’t see, but I’m sure they were great.
Livestream Concerts Are Still A Thing. Thanks Accessibility!:
When I heard that this particular tour was happening I was super geeked and figured that this was going to be my introductory show back into live and in person concerts, however like everything else in the last 3 years I could not get comfortable enough. I hoped and commented a bunch that they’d do a live stream option and like the stand up guys that they are, The Wonder Years did not let me down.
Side Note: If I had gotten comfortable enough, this would have been the perfect show to go to. The way The Wonder Years put on this show with as much care and safety as they could during this time and every time I saw the measures they were taking it all made me so happy and proud to be a fan of them. They had mask policies and vaccine/testing requirements and were top-notch on general accessibility stuff, including making sure there were gender neutral bathrooms and getting a sensitivity rating on their light show.
Nothing is full proof and there’s a lot of privilege involved in this move cause it was still an in person show, I just personally happened to like how they modeled getting back into the ring. In person concerts were gonna come back into the mainstream whether we’d liked them to or not, so in knowing that, somebody had to take better precautions than “Covid is real and you assume all risks by showing up, but you don’t have to be vaccinated, test negative or wear a mask, just love your neighbor.” Again not trying to gas them up too much, but other bands should really be following their lead.
Part 1: The Bedroom:
I had been running around all day and had just gotten off of work and still had some stuff to do, so I really didn’t think I’d catch it “live.” Normally I set these up in my living room and do a whole thing where the show is my main focus, but because I was busy I turned it on in my room while I was doing other things. I thought I was catching the beginning, based on when I thought it was going to start, however these dudes played Suburbia first, rude. So naturally I was all bummed thinking I was catching the end of the show. It was a nice couple of songs, but I wasn’t fully dedicated to the watch because I thought I missed the first shot. Regardless though and I’ve said this a million times, I hella enjoy screaming The Wonder Years and will take the option when given, every single time, so this was no different.
Part 2: The Kitchen:
Most livestreams have at least a few days of playback before they cut you off, so while I was cooking dinner a couple days later, I went back for the full watch. That was when I found out that I had only missed like 30 minutes of the entire two album set, the first go around. Anyway whether it was in my kitchen, my bedroom or my living room, The Living Room Song will never get old. I know I sing the lyrics wrong, but it’s a special thing to get to enjoy from home. That being said, when they brought out members of the opening acts to sing the whole “I’m not sad anymore I’m just tired of this place and if this year would just end I think we’d all be okay,” from the song “All My Friends Are In Bar Bands” I was pretty on top then too. That was the moment I wish I could have seen live.
The Upsides/Suburbia:
I thought about taking a moment and talking about how much these albums mean to me and giving y’all this whole sentimental piece, which I can do, however I’m not gonna lie, as much as I love these albums and The Wonder Years  in general, I’m still rusty on these records. I’ve listened to these albums front to back many times and there’s just stuff I don’t know and that’s okay.
I will always be attached to them and I do eventually want to write about the songs on these albums that helped soundtrack my life. Anniversary tours are something I cherish even if I don’t know or like the band. This is all just to say that when we talk our love for specific bands or albums it doesn’t always have to feel like we’re trying to win Biggest Fan Awards, just enjoy yourself please.
That being said, I’m an elder emo so I will fight somebody over my credentials. HAHAHAHAHAHA!
It Is What It Is, Until You Adapt and Change:
Adding a livestream option to any tour these days should be standard going forward. We are 3 years into this ish and if your faves have abandoned live stream shows than they’re hella wack, just sayin. Once again lol, not trying to give The Wonder Years more credit than they deserve for some regular decent human ish, they just did good and I don’t mind shouting them out for that. I had a good time, even if it was from my kitchen.
