THE MIRACLE WORKER

THE MIRACLE WORKER is a three act play by William Gibson that is based on based on Helen Keller's 1903 autobiography The Story of My Life. It concentrates on deaf-blind Keller's childhood interactions with teacher Anne Sullivan. Gibson adapted the play from his 1957 teleplay of the same name seen on “Playhouse 90.” Directed by Arthur Penn, the play premiered on Broadway in 1959 starring Anne Bancroft in the title role with Patty Duke as Keller. It won 1960 Tony Awards for Best Play, Penn, and Bancroft. It ran 719 performances. A production was seen in the West End in 1961. In 1962, Gibson, Penn, Bancroft and Duke were reunited for an acclaimed film adaptation that earned all four Oscar nominations and the actors winning the awards. The play has also been adapted for TV twice, first in 1979 with Duke as Sullivan and Melissa Gilbert as Helen, and again in 2000 with Alison Elliott as Sullivan and Hallie Kate Eisenberg as Helen. It has also been adapted for Italian (1968) and Spanish (1978) television.

The play was seen off-Broadway produced by Roundabout Theatre in 1987 starring Karen Allen as Anne and Eevin Hartsough as Annie. The play was revived on Broadway in 2010 starring Alison Pill as Anne and Abigail Breslin as Helen.

The play has been in constant production in educational, community and regional (see below) theatres. It was first produced at Paper Mill Playhouse in 1979.

THE MIRACLE WORKER was produced by Paper Mill Playhouse (Millburn NJ) from January 23 to Febuary 24, 2008. It was directed by Susan Fenichell with set and costumes by David Zinn, lighting by Mary Louise Geiger and sound by Randy Hansen. The cast: Stuart Zagnit (Dr. Anagnos), John Hickok (Captain Keller), Emily Dorsch (Kate Keller), Meredith Lipson (Helen Keller), Jordon Barrow (Percy), Cherelle Cargill (Viney), Beth Dixon (Aunt Ev), Will Fowler (James Keller), and Annika Boras (Annie Sullivan).

In 2008 I was the ADA coordinator for Paper Mill Playhouse, a theatre with a high profile in the field of cultural arts accessibility. This production was staged to boost that profile, so I worked closely with the show to assure it was as accessible as possible. There was even a search to find a young deaf and/or blind actor to play Helen, but none was found. We did, however, hire the wonderful Alexandria Wailes as production adviser to assure that the show was done with the utmost integrity for the disabled community. I also edited the Study Guide (click here), distributed to our high school attendees and still available online.

In addition, the ASL interpretation of the show was staffed by the best in the business: the late, great Alan Champion, Marianne Jacobson, and Candace Broecker Penn. Candace has a special bond with THE MIRACLE WORKER – her father-in-law was Arthur Penn, who staged the original production and helmed the film version. We were in very good hands. In addition, the show was audio-described for the blind and open-captioned for those with profound hearing loss. All of these services were done for every Paper Mill show, but for THE MIRACLE WORKER their frequency and availability was increased dramatically.

I was fortunate enough to have seen the Paper Mill's 1979 production, which I believe also was staged in New York City. This 2008 production was really sharp, very modern in appearance and tone, without sacrificing the show's 'classic' beauty. Although really well acted and designed, without the added ADA efforts, it fell a little short in dramatic intensity. I have seen the play in an intimate round setting (Chester Theatre Group) and have acted in it as Captain Keller (the Growing Stage), so I am very familiar with it. Once again, we were upstaged by Broadway when the play was brought back to New York at Circle in the Square just two years later. I did not see that production, but I heard mixed reviews. It is hard to do a “bad” production of THE MIRACLE WORKER. Thanks to Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan the shear beauty of the indomitable human spirit on display would make that impossible.
