Day 2: Pumpkin Patch — Pumpkin to Talk About
Thanks for the amazing prompts @hale-o-ween! Banners by @justlgbtthings.
Tumblr media
Leather and Prada don't go together.
That's what Lydia Martin thought when she first met Cora Hale.
In all of her prickly glory, Cora Hale was what Lydia Martin despised. Brutish nature and surly attitude and not-minced words tumbling from cracked, chapped lips. Skinned knees where a skirt should be and a lower tone than a girl their age should have. Eyes that didn't sparkle but stared unseeingly at you when you spoke.
Barely knowing her for a week, Lydia Martin swore she would never be involved with Cora Hale's leather style more than her prim and proper Prada could stomach.
Tumblr media
Leather and Prada and pumpkin guts don't go together.
That's what Lydia thought when Cora first invited her to go pumpkin picking together during their last year of high school.
But much like her brother, Cora hid her delicate feelings behind pinched scowls and grumpy insults aimed at others' unprotected underbellies. It didn't take a genius—though Lydia was, so in a way, it did—to realize that Cora's fisted hands and clenched jaw actually meant she was nervous.
Which in turn meant Cora was actually asking Lydia out on a date.
And as much as Lydia knew how horribly leather and Prada and pumpkin guts went together, Lydia also knew there's no other way she'd rather spend the Sunday before Halloween than perusing pumpkin patches with Cora.
Tumblr media
Leather and Prada and pumpkin guts and cheap strawberry chapstick don't go together.
That's what Lyds thought when she first kissed Cor.
There was something hypnotic in the crisp fall air. It was the only explanation as to why Lyds leaned in on a bale of hale and tasted synthetic sweetness.
She couldn't even remember what Cor was talking about when it happened. Just that her chestnut hair rode the wind while fingerless-gloved hands wrapped leather tighter around her body to stave off the autumn chill. Just that the stars aligned and Cor's typical snarl had morphed into a tiny, ghost of a smile as she brushed Lyds' fingers over orange pumpkin peels.
As Lyds pulled back with the fresh taste of strawberry on her tongue, relishing in the tingle of scratchy lips against her own, she told herself she was right.
Leather and Prada and pumpkin guts and cheap strawberry chapstick definitely don't go together.
But as mocha eyes squinted satisfied delight at her upon parting, a tanned face furrowed with rare happiness—Lyds amended.
Leather and Prada and pumpkin guts and cheap strawberry chapstick don't go together.
But they should.
Tumblr media
Lydia Martin and Cora Hale go surprisingly well together.
That's what Beacon Hills thought when it first heard the news of their coupling as kids and subsequent marriage five years after first impressions and three years after first dates and two years into their college degrees.
Stranger things have happened, they'd say.

Day 2 | Pumpkin Patch
Tumblr media
The brunette boy stops in front of the large pumpkin patch, just two more steps and he would have set foot in the field for the first time. There are at least 100 different things racing through his head that he could do in the time he was standing out here. Sometimes he wondered if his mother was right, and his grandmother was just telling him stupid stories. The lanky boy took a breath to collect himself, he had come out here to find out just that. Did his grandmother just have a wild imagination? Was everything she told him true? Or would he be caught by the people who lived at the farm before he could find out?

Day Two | Pumpkin Patch
“Yeah, I’m good, Dad, it’s really, uh. Something. I’m pretty hungry though, can we go hunting tonight?”
Noah ruffles his son’s hair, looking at the more-than-slightly lopsided bat house.
“Sounds like a plan, kiddo. Let’s go look through our files.”

@hale-o-ween Day 2: Pumpkin Patch
Tumblr media
Stiles drags Lydia into his plot to convince the pack to go pumpkin picking to ‘bond’, and she agrees, although if she’s honest, only to watch the inevitable argument that will result in pumpkins being thrown. Peter tries to connect with Malia via mischief, carving a pumpkin of Derek together, and poking fun at him over video chat (of which Peter forced him into learning to use). He’s not impressed in the slightest. Scott and Isaac compete over who can carve the best pumpkin with their claws, while Melissa, Noah, and Chris use the discards to make pumpkin themed food.

Day 2: Pumpkin Patch — Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice
Thanks for the amazing prompts @hale-o-ween!
Tumblr media
It became tradition. Much like how the Hale family told scary stories around a raging campfire after hosting another successful haunted house of horrors for the town.
Pumpkin picking was no joke. A lot of thought went into the process. Would the pumpkins be used for decoration? Maybe for the littlest Hales scurrying about to carve caricatures into while their youth still remained intact? Or for the practicality of grinding and mashing until the pumpkin's insides could be used as fodder for food and spices and cliché lattes?
When that was decided, the fun part began.
Winding between rows of orange and yellow fruit in the one and only pumpkin patch Beacon Hills had to offer. Assuring the owners—a sweet old couple that's been married for as long as the town's been around—that they don't need help finding anything, that "the one" will speak to them when it's ready to.
But—that was always a tradition.
The thing that became tradition was having a green behind the ears young fox follow Laura around twisted vines and rotted gourds like clockwork.
The Yukimuras moved into town much earlier than the Hales could have expected. Something about being drawn to Beacon Hills long before others would be.
Something about Satomi Ito having a gut feeling too strong for a turned werewolf to be ignored. Something about preventing tragedy and a sworn obligation to protect their community after having destroyed it decades ago. Something about wanting their daughter to grow up being unafraid of the powers she could one day come into.
But to Laura—four years older yet not old enough to understand the supernatural implications—it was all background noise to the shouting of Kira's eyes.
The ones that screamed for someone to understand her nervous babbling and naïve optimism. For someone to tuck her under their wings and keep her there until she could fly on her own.
Someone to love her unapologetically without fearing for her safety so suffocatingly obvious.
Weaving between twisted vines and rotted gourds and letting Kira pick herself back up when her chunky buckled boots caught on a stray jack-o-lantern, Laura thought—she could be that person.
So, Laura became that person.
As solid as the haunted house night of fright tradition. As cemented in the ground as campfire nonsense flickering out irrational fears tradition. Kira became Laura's unwavering mission tradition. Someone to take care of and be taken care of in the weirdest moments of wise toddlerism taking flight.
The tradition of Hales falling for unconventional loves without knowing the meaning of the word yet.
And when Kira picked herself up off the hay-littered ground with a sheepish grin shining brighter than the yellows of unripened pumpkins—
Laura unapologetically grinned back.

Hale-o-ween 2022 - Day 2 prompt horror - Pumpkin Patch
Lydia’s heart pounded in her chest as she stood in the middle of Beacon Hills’ pumpkin patch. It was past three in the morning, if the position of the moon could tell her anything. The normally inviting rows of gourds felt different at night, far more dangerous. Her breath clouded in front of her as she scanned the area. Skeletal trees with only a few leaves remaining shuddered in the breeze and Lydia felt her arms tense as she scanned them for anything hanging. There was one thing she knew; if she came here alone, asleep, at night, then she wasn’t alone. Somewhere in the rows of pumpkins laid a body. In the woods beyond, its killer.

Hale-o-ween 2022 - Day 2 horror prompt - Pumpkin Patch
The headless horseman is in fact *not* headless. He has a head. A pumpkin head. And when that one gets smashed, he has a million more to choose from in any pumpkin patch in Beacon County.
