Probably the greatest pure industrial record of all time, and certainly, if not, in the top two or three of every persons list. This thing is epic with a capital E. Fucking incredibly eerie, catchy, and still easily able to push against normal conceptions music or popular music. An extremely well put together, and creative record that I think every person should experience if given the chance.

If you haven’t listened to this. Do it. Go in blind. It’ll blow you away. If you have, you don’t need me to explain why this album is fucking amazing. You know.

I love how raw and unhinged Einsturzende Neubauten are. We need more power tools in contemporary music, I think. This is guttural and cathartic.

Heute habe ich Anna eine Platte von den Einstürzenden Neubauten geschenkt, sie hat sich so gefreut, weil sie die einmal gegen eine Cure Platte eingetauscht hat. Ich habe zu ihr gesagt, dass du alles wieder zurück bekommst, eines Tages. Manfred hat gesagt, dass es ihm egal sei, wie viele hinten stehen und rauchen, ich habe zu ihm gesagt: Du bist aber nicht repräsentativ, Ich muss dich enttäuschen, ich bin sehr repräsentativ. Das war ihm wohl zu viel, warum kann ich meinen Mund nie halten? Er hat zu mir gesagt, dass ich die PSK-Studie machen solle, ich habe das Gesicht verzogen: Ja, wir haben immer Abwechslung für dich! Unser Vögelchen ist davon geflogen. Dann ist er wieder gekommen und die anderen drei sind hinein gegangen, ich habe ihn angelächelt, er hat mich böse und herausfordernd angeschaut, ich habe mich umgedreht und bin auch hinein gegangen. Am Schluss habe ich mich nicht von ihm verabschiedet. Anna hat zu ihm gesagt, dass bei der U3 Eröffnung die Chippendales auftreten und dass ihm das gefallen werde. Ich habe beim Mah-Jonggspielen gewonnen, kenne ich dieses Spiel aus einem früheren Leben? Habe etwas vergessen, ich habe Manfred gefragt, ob ich mich eintragen könne, er hat mich unvermittelt gefragt, ob ich gestern die Ferrero-Studie gemacht hätte, ich habe ihn gefragt, was das damit zu tun hätte, es gäbe eine Frage, ob man ausländische Fernsehsender empfangen könne. Er habe nur gerade in das Programm hinein geschaut, dann hat er eine ganze Weile die Liste nicht gefunden, er hat mich für fast jeden Tag eingetragen. Ich habe zu ihm gesagt, dass Erika gesagt hätte, diese Woche sei schon alles voll, er hat nur abgewinkt, als ob das irrelevant sei. Zuerst wollte er mich nur für eine Woche eintragen, aber ich habe ihn angeschaut und gewartet und er hat mich auch für die nächsten Wochen eingetragen. Eine Weile später ist Ben zu ihm gegangen, um sich eintragen zu lassen und hat nur drei Tage bekommen. Das ist alles sehr seltsam.

Ich war um zehn nach zwölf im Wasser, bin 26 Längen geschwommen, dann ist Adam gekommen. Zuerst war nur die siebte Bahn offen, da waren aber nur Idioten, die nicht einmal richtig schwimmen können und der eine, der immer so spritzt. Ruveni ist gerade gegangen, kurz, bevor Adam kam, wurde auch die sechste Bahn aufgemacht, die Leine war noch nicht ausgezogen, so dass niemand darin schwamm. Adam ist unten am Beckenrand gesessen, bei der Bahn, in der ich geschwommen bin, und hat auf mich gewartet. Ich habe gesehen, wie seine Brille spiegelt, er hat sie aber nicht aufgesetzt, bis er mich begrüßt hatte. Als ich bei ihm war, habe ich zu ihm gesagt: Eine leere Bahn, ganz allein für dich! Er hat mit dem Arm nach oben gezeigt: Schau, der, der da Rücken schwimmt! Vor zwei Sekunden war da noch niemand! Er hat genickt, ich bin weiter geschwommen, kurz vor den letzten Längen habe ich meinen Rhythmus gefunden, ich bin immer schneller geworden und dann habe ich unten auf Adam gewartet. Er ist immer weitergeschwommen, habe ihm zugeschaut, weil er so schön schwimmt. Dann bin ich zur Treppe geschwommen und raus gegangen, habe noch einmal zu ihm hingeschaut, er ist gekrault. Haben nicht fast alle Wörter eine doppelte Bedeutung? Hätte ich ihn doch gekrault, als er am Beckenrand saß, ob er mich gesehen hat? Habe getrödelt, weil ich ihn beim Ausgang treffen wollte, gleichzeitig hatte ich es aber sehr eilig, weil ich nicht zu spät kommen wollte, vielleicht kommt er morgen zum Vortrag von Carlo Ginzburg. Warum habe ich ihn nicht gefragt!

Whenever I talk about films I like I end up talking about Julian Rosefeldt's Manifesto. I think it's the gold standard. Fuck plot, fuck dialogue, just give me Cate Blanchett in 13 different roles, reciting lines from one manifesto after the other - showcasing what an incredible actress she is in the process.

All the vignettes seem to be available on Rosefeldt's website if you want to have a closer look. I think number 10 is my favourite, closely followed by 11.

"It’s not just metal anyway," interpolates Fletch, "when we first started sampling for the Synclavier, we went out and hit cars, we threw bricks at fings and everyfink."

"I think really we have nicked a few of Neubaten’s ideas," says Martin. "I was at their ICA date, when they did the metal concerto, and the power and the excitement of it was brilliant. What we’re doing, though, is using the ideas in a different context, in the context of pop."

Neubaten leader Blixa Bargeld, for his part, is in total agreement. He came along on the Berlin date and was thoroughly amused. He is currently working with Gareth Jones and Adrian Sherwood, the pair responsible for Depeche’s special mixes.

Obviously this list is far from remotely complete, but I thought the results were really cool. It’s fun to see what an industrial community came together to determine “essential” within the scene, and while it’s not a perfect list nor necessarily exactly what I’d have said myself I do think it’s a pretty successful list of albums I’d more or less call required listening if you’re getting into the genre. Neat!
